Just another red alert
SUMMARY: The enterprise is under attack and you seem to take the fall… literally.

A/n idk why 2/3 chapters so far include head injures haha. I’ll find something interesting and hopefully a little different for the next chapter lol.
Life on the enterprise was never boring that was for sure. You were getting ready to go to sleep when the red alert sounded. Dammit, i guess you wouldn’t be sleeping then.
You sighed sitting up in bed and swinging your legs over the edge. Well if you’re not going to sleep, might as well do your job and head to the bridge. You stood and got changed into your uniform. As you began to head over to the door, a huge jolt rocked the ship.
Catching you completely off guard you found yourself being thrown forward, hard, and directly into a wall. Putting you hand out to stop yourself you felt and heard the crunch of bone before your arm slipped and you went head first into the wall, knocking you out on impact.
The red alert sounded in the background while you laid half against the wall your broken wrist hanging limply by your side.
On the bridge things were looking slightly better. The Romulan war bird had caught the captain by surprise and worf was a second too slow on the shield. The ship rocked and Picard signalled to open communications.
“This is Captain Picard of the USS enterprise, romulan warbird you have fired on a federation vessel. This has been seen as an act of war. If you do not disarm your phaser banks we will retaliate with force.” He said gruffly and worf shook his head.
“No response captain.” The Klingon said.
“Alright Mr worf, power to the phasers and ready a full spread of photon torpedoes. Mr crusher bring us about 20 degrees star board. I want them in our sights.” He ordered.
“Aye Captain. Phaser banks charged, on your order sir.” He said.
“Not yet.” Picard said holding up a hand to gesture his sentiment.
“Sir a second vessel has decloaked aft starboard!” Worf said. “Sir it’s firing on the other vessel. The vessel had been destroyed.” He said. “Sir, they are hailing us.”
“On screen Mr Worf.” Picard said and the view screen flashed on.
“Captain. I apologise on behalf of the empire, a band of … rogues have been attempting to start war with the federation. They had commandeered a ship and paid with their lives. I trust this misplaced and misguided act of aggression is forgivable?” The romulan captain said.
Picard held up a hand and Worf turned off audio.
“Deanna?” The captain asked.
“He’s telling the truth sir. I sense no guilt or lies in his words. More like … apprehension for your answer.” She said and Picard nodded to worf again.
“Captain, i trust as this remains an isolated incident the federation is willing to … overlook this act as a sign of trust which will hopefully reinforce the treaty. However,” he said straightening his uniform, “It must remain as such; isolated.” He said.
“Thank you Captain. And once more, my apologies.” The romulan said and cut communications.
“Mr crusher lay in a course for our previous heading.” Riker order and Wesley tapped his console.
“Course laid in sir.” He said.
“Engage.” Riker commanded.
With that matter settled red alert was cancelled and riker combadge chirped.
“Dr crusher to Riker.”
“Riker here doc, go ahead.”
“Could you please send ensign L/n to sickbay. I have more patients than hands on deck currently and i need all my nurses here.” She said and Riker looked at Picard and frowned.
“She’s not here doc, i assumed she reported to you when she didn’t show on the bridge.”
“Well she’s certainly not here.” The doctor responded.
“I’ll go find her.” Deanna volunteered and will gave her a nod.
You were one of the few members of the crew with a duel posting. You took the com in alternating shifts to work in sickbay. With a degree in nursing and the skills of pilot from where you grew up on a colony, Starfleet had granted you a duel posting on the enterprise after you had managed to defend you colony at seventeen and then helped provide valuable aid to its citizens after the attack.
It was only a small colony, but you had been fast tracked in your entry process and it was barely a year later you had found yourself on the federation flagship.
Deanna was in the turbolift on the way to deck 17.
“Computer, locate ensign L/n.” She said.
“Ensign L/n is in her quarters.” The robotic voice responded.
“Strange.” Deanna muttered to herself. “Computer, what is the ensigns current status.” She said.
“Insufficient data.” The computer chirped.
“What is ensign L/n’s bio-readings?” She asked again.
“Insufficient data, ensign L/n has restricted access to that data to Dr crusher only.” The computer said.
“What?!”
“Ensign L/n has restricted access to-“
“Understood.” She said frustrated. “Why?”
“Unknown.”
At that moment the doors to the turbolift hissed open and Deanna strode out and towards your quarters. She tapped the consul on the wall and heard it chime, but there was no response.
“Manual override, command code Troi delta 2-1-0” she said and the door opened.
She glanced around before moving into your bedroom and hurried to your side.
“Troi to sickbay, medical emergency. Two to beam directly to sickbay.”
“Acknowledged Counsellor.” A voice said.
A moment later the two of you were in sickbay. Dr crusher was just finishing up with the last of the patients when she saw you beam in.
“God. She never does things by half.” Beverley said, rushing to kneel next to you and scanning your full body with the tricorder.
“But thats what you love about her.” Deanna said and smiled.
“Yes” the doctor responded, “help me get her up.” She said and the two of them gently lifted you onto a biobed.
“she has a nasty break in her wrist. Surprisingly her head seems more or less fine. Probably due to her strong betazed brain healing fast.” Beverly said and Deanna looked up.
“Her what?!” She said standing up and Beverly winced.
“Sorry, i wasn’t supposed to say that.” She said and turned away to grab a regenerator for your arm.
“Is that why her scans are restricted? Because she doesn’t want people to know?” Deanna asked sitting back down by your bed.
“Yes. More like she’s afraid of it getting out. She was adopted on her colony after her parents abandoned her on an outpost in the same system. She does like to remember, she refuses to tell people. I think shes afraid of what people will think.” Beverly explained as she moved your wrist slightly and scanned it to check the bone was in place properly.
“Nobody has an issue with me?” Deanna said questionably and frowning.
“Yes. But your the Counsellor, you have to keep their emotions to yourself. Doctor patient confidentiality, something I just fail dismally in.” The doctor said as she switched on the device as it let off a low blue light and deep hum.
“I suppose the idea of someone who could spill all your secrets does pose issues socially.” Deanna said. “My mother certainly does.” She said with a laugh. “Is she fully betazoid?” Deanna asked.
“Three quarters.”
“How?”
“Her mother was betazoid and her father was half. Based off her genetics.” The redhead explained removing the device and scanning your wrist again to see how it healed.
“So what does that look like?” Deanna asked “is she telepathic?”
“To an extent.” You said and they both looked at you sheepishly. “I guess the cats out of the bag then. But i trust you’ll keep this between the three of us Counsellor Troi?” You sighed.
“Of course, i wouldn’t want you to steal my job.” She joked.
“I wouldn’t. And for what it’s worth I’m glad it was you, generally medical professionals are better at keeping secrets.”
“And I’m glad to have another of my kind on board.”
“I suppose so.” You said with a sigh and she frowned.
“You don’t like that?”
“More i don’t like to remember. And doc?”
“Yes?” Beverly said avoiding eye contact.
“Thanks for fixing my arm.”
“No problem, hows the head feeling?”
“Not bad, i think it was partly the rush of emotion.” You said and sat up rubbing your wrist with your other hand.
“You can’t block it out? Nobody taught you?” Deanna said sounding surprised.
“Nobody to teach me.” You said with a shrug.
“I can.” Deanna offered with a smile.
“I’d like that.” You said telepathically and Deanna looked shocked for a second before smiling broadly.
“Oh god. Now theres two of you. You know not all of us can join your mental conversation. Us normal people would like to know whats going on sometimes.” The doctor huffed and you grinned.
“Sorry doc. Confidential.” You said with an evil grin and she rolled her eyes.
“So what are the extent of your abilities Y/n?” Deanna asked and you smiled at her wistfully.
“Well I’m empathic, like yourself.” You said waving your hands as you talked. “I can communicate telepathically. I can catch some people’s thoughts but only if they are really focused on them and i try hard enough. But thats about it. Your mother sure posed a problem.” You said with a laugh.
“My mother?” Deanna said pulling a face. “I wasn’t aware you knew her.”
“Yep. Sensed me my first day here. Wanted to tell you but i begged her. A very out of character experience i must say.” You said.
“Im sorry.” Deanna said.
“Not a problem. I rather liked some of our conversations. I’ve never been to betazed. Not that i can recall. She was a good source of information.” You said with a smile.
“You’ve never been?!” Deanna exclaimed.
“Nope.” You said popping the p.
“I’ll have to take you on your next shore leave then.” She offered and you nodded.
“I’d like that very much.” You said with a big grin after a moment you swung your legs over the edge of the biobed intending to leave.
“Not so fast Miss L/n.” Doctor crusher said and you slumped your shoulders and sighed.
“Didn’t think so.” You muttered under your breath and Deanna chuckled.
“I want to do a more intense brain scan to check for any residual damage and your not to put any strain on your wrist for a few days. Next shift I’ll scan it again to be sure you haven’t been.” She said with a motherly look.
“Yes doc.” You said and she smiled, coming over and scanning your head with a diagnostic tool.
“This wont take a moment.” She said.
“Doctors? Am i right?” You said telepathically to Troi and smirked.
“You’re not wrong.” Troi said the same way. And Beverly raised an eyebrow.
“Why do i feel like you’re talking about me.” She said with an authoritative tone.
“Because we are.” You said with a grin.
“A grand error on my part.” She said with a sigh and turned off the device. “You’re good to go ensign. But your shift in sickbay starts in twenty minutes.”
“Aye aye captain.” You said with a mock salute, you winked at Deanna and offered her your arm. “Shall we make our great escape.” You said and Beverly sighed.
“always the dramatist, aren’t you Y/n.” She smiled.
“Whats life without drama my dear doctor.”
“I wouldn’t know.” She responded.
“And don’t ever try and find out.” You said pulling a face and hopping off the bed. “Let’s leave my dear Deanna.” You said.
The two of you said goodbye to Beverly and left to go find out the extent of your abilities and maybe learn a thing or two. But one thing was for sure, there was going to be chocolate involved.

Star Trek - How you met each other

B'Elanna Torres
You're an ensign assigned to the engineering division, just one of a dozen young recruits who have just left Starfleet Academy and couldn't have imagined finding yourselves in such a situation on the very first mission. Having B'Elanna as chief engineer is an almost amusing challenge, her geniality is accompanied by a strong personality, necessary to deal with all those who doubt her capabilities or resent her position. However, you're almost invisible in the eyes of the half-Klingon, probably because you don't give her any headaches or are usually on counter shift, at least until a big technical problem leaves her dumbfounded and you come to the rescue, solving something that even she couldn't, using only an old two-strike trick and a bit of luck. She genuinely laughs and tries to guess your name, a little embarrassed that she can't remember it, to thank you for the great help.
Christine Chapel
It's almost a funny situation if it weren't tragic. After another unfortunate transporter accident and a fall that would make anyone feel the soul leave and return to the body, you find yourself in the sickbay having a general check-up, not to mention the fact that you've hit the head. Dr. McCoy, with a scowl, gives you an extensive list of recommendations and bonus scoldings, for a difference of a few adjustments he almost lost one of his best medical officers, who he considers his new pupil. "You'd better lie down, darling." a melodic voice comes from at your side and soft hands push against the stretcher, your eyes are closed in delight, when opened they reveal an angelic figure staring at you with concern, bright blue irises filled with compassion and curiosity. You smile and are relieved at how her presence brings immediate calm, before everything fades into darkness.
Deanna Troi
When the USS Enterprise finally responds to the rescue signal, you've already given up all hope and started waiting for a quick death. A promising exploration mission turned into a nightmare when the ship was destroyed on landing and the locals are more like big feet, physically and mentally. With no outside contact, no food, limited energy, extreme temperature changes, several losses due to murder or consequences of the precarious conditions, in the fourth week, probably given up for dead by the Starfleet, you are the only survivor, a junior lieutenant grade with a diplomatic specialization, how ironic. It's all very fast, you don't remember much because you're almost unconscious, just a couple of faces, the feeling of being held by a warm body that whispered words of comfort, stroking your hair, telling that everything was going to be all right. Exactly what you needed at that moment.
Kathryn Janeway
Being part of the Maquis wasn't even close to your childhood dream, having Starfleet Officer parents loyal to the Federation, a destiny was already set for you to follow in their footsteps, before everything changed drastically. The colony was attacked by Cardassians, many families were decimated and you were just another one left among the wreckage, orphaned, wounded, traumatized and with nothing but your own luck, which forced the development of survival skills and knowing nature like the back of a hand. This made a difference when it was time to enlist and ally yourself with them, driven by a blind sense of justice and pain that fueled resentment. Within a few months you find yourself fearing death and then wishing for it when rescued by Voyager, past experiences have created an aversion to anything related to it, but watching the captain run and fight to ensure that everyone, including the rebels, is safe, made you feel something unusual, a strange feeling in stomach, especially when she realizes your presence on the ship and smiles.
Kira Nerys
The engineering area is fascinating and challenging at the same time, especially on an old Cardassian station, full of catches and new things to discover. You're curious by nature and this has paid off handsomely, such as an opportunity to serve as an ensign on Deep Space Nine shortly after graduating from Starfleet Academy, which you enthusiastically accepted. So much enthusiasm, mixed with anxiety and a hint of desire to make a good impression, that you threw yourself into the duties almost immediately, with diligence navigating and exploring around the machinery's complexities. One day, overwhelmed by new responsibilities, you made a small unintentional mistake that caused a huge commotion on the Promenade and a headache for security. It's no surprise when someone comes to complain, what is unexpected is that it's an energetic Bajoran who makes you lose words and feel an inexplicable urge to cry, the weight of the last few days falling on shoulders. She stops scolding you, terrified of the reaction, and starts finding ways to make you stop crying.
Number One | Una Chin-Riley
Some would say you're a loner, others would say you're crazy. It's not just anyone who decides to leave the academy and a xenoanthropology specialization in the middle of the road, even less to venture out alone into the quadrants, that's what you've done. Years of independent exploration have yielded hundreds of files about culture, language, beliefs, structure and other aspects resulting from a lot of research and observation. When the Enterprise crew arrives on an M-class planet without any official first contact, they are surprised by the immediate warm welcome from the humanoid species, as if they were already familiar with earthlings. Later they understand the reason. You, the only other human there, and your skills of adaptability, linguistics and consequently diplomacy. Which impress them, especially First Officer Una. She is attracted by your vibrant personality and free spirit, the way you mediate all contact, your passion for cultural understanding and thirst for knowledge, this led her to convince Pike to make you an offer, to join Starfleet in continuing your explorations and sharing discoveries, seeing you as a promising addition.

State of the Archive
Generally, still moving. We're still getting to the bottom of the issue that has a background process shutting down unexpectedly, but that's relatively minor and more annoyance than anything else. Especially for an archive our size. Things have been going great on Discord, with interesting discussions about future sociology, whether we do or don't like musicals and it's been great seeing new people come in, too! We're very welcoming, so stop on by!

Which is REALLY long and written while Swan Queen was REALLY popular and hilariously I think you can tell when I started shipping Dragon Queen more partway though but shhhhhh.

The little Game of Thrones fic where everything turns out all right.
Third Most Comments quantum variations on a love theme (Star Trek: Discovery, Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak)
Michael Burnham and Laira Rillak are on a shuttle to a resource allocation negotiation when they pass through a quantum anomaly and shift realities.
Somehow they're in a strange, soft universe where they seem to be in vacation, together. Which is impossible, they're not even friends.
When they accidentally bring something unexpected home with them, everything shifts.
Shout out to quantum because I LOVE this fic, with all my heart, and I feel bad constantly because it feels so niche, but it is loved dammit. It gets the comments. (and is my favorite thing at the moment, I just haven't had writing spoons).
Fourth Most Bookmarks Under the Star Light (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Phil Coulson/Melinda May)
Rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. means Melinda May, Phil Coulson and their team have enough time to build something personal. Lingering ghosts of T.A.H.I.T.I. means it's not what they intended. In fact, it's a bit of a mess.
Decent babyfic even if I tried to science and it's messy. It's so early in the show and they're all such ducklings.
Fifth Most Words Firefly (Star Trek: Discovery, Mirror Philippa Georgiou & having feelings, being a person).
Michael asks the Guardian of Forever if there's a timeline where Philippa can stay in the 32nd century, and there happens to be one, but it has a small little difference.
A tiny, insignificant, barely worth mentioning, difference.
the longest thing I've ever written with no romantic pairing, and notable for bringing @whimsicalli out of her cave to play. (Also I love this one, it was great). I learned how to post a chapter without worrying about who was going to comment and just to enjoy it. Great fic for that.

I don’t how to explain it in any sort of intelligent way, and SNW is still in its infancy but
Pike/Una and Troi/Riker have the same energy
Like, obviously there are plot/context differences but like
Una Chin-Riley 🤝 William Riker
The ethos to their triumvirate, inquisitive, headstrong, closed off about their personal life prior to Starfleet, incredibly respectful of boundaries because they are defensive of their own, protective of their captain.
Christopher Pike 🤝 Deanna Troi
The pathos of their triumvirate, principled, selfless, their empathy is a double edged sword that makes them extremely powerful and vulnerable, avoids getting close to people because thats a big commitment for their empathetic nature.
OH AND!
PikeUna 🤝 TroiRiker
Both have “deeply respectful friendship born from being exes who ended things on good terms” energy. Which is directly canon between Riker and Troi from the get go. While Pike & Una having been a thing prior to SNW is quasi-canon via rumored discussions Rebecca Romijn had with the writer’s room for fleshing out their relationship. Who knows if that’ll ever get answered one way or another?? Lol.
The headstrong half of the ship is a lot more obvious about still being at least a little smitten. Like in seeking out the other for comfort or to comfort them, in personal logs, in other people’s observations. They don’t want their feelings getting in the way especially because they’re coworkers so they stuff it and look elsewhere.
The empathic half of the ship appears to have compartmentalized whatever feelings they have for the other person. Under the guise of there being more important things (even though they still dabble romantically) when really it’s just scary to get attached, let alone reattached. However it leaks through very obviously when the other half is in immediate danger.
Regardless they both have a great ship dynamic and it’s fun seeing the genderswapped elements too. Since usually in this kind of m/f ship the guy is the action based one (see Riker) and the girl is the empathic one (see Troi). PikeUna flips the script and it’s very charming because ✨fuck gender stereotypes✨. What can I say, I’m a sucker for unironic girlboss/malewife 😂

i have sooo many unanswered questions about last week's episode of Picard that were NOT addressed at ALL this week. in no particular order
Is it REALLY Deanna on the Shrike? I know that the changelings want Picard et. al. to believe that it is, but that still doesn't conclusively mean it is
REALLY?? Not a single damn scene with Will trying to reach Deanna. Or with real Will? Or anything about him trying to apologize to Deanna?
Or ANY meaningful follow up with them to the end of last week and that gut punch????
Where is Kestra? Did Deanna manage to hide her, or did she flee/escape? Who is caring for her?
IF that's really Deanna on the Shrike, are she and Will being kept together? Is there any opportunity for comfort for each other?
WTF this is NOT okay that I know literally nothing else about my favorite characters/relationship and their condition
Is Lwaxana Troi still alive? Is anyone on Betazed not concerned about Deanna???
Not a question either, but it continues to make me hella nervous about the fate of the whole original TNG characters and making it through the season together
Also not a question but COMPLETELY absurd that Laris isn't tearing apart the quadrants to find them. It's not like she wouldn't have heard what's happening
Weird that we haven't heard a single thing about Geordi's wife, either. Or whoever mothered his children??
Where the hell were Worf and Raffi during this episode????

What made you ship it?
I always thought they were neat- they have incredible chemistry, and they really did come off as very immediately and obviously into each other lol. A lot of their scenes together are just Very Flirty! They also play off each other in ways that are quite fascinating, both in terms of personality and aesthetics.
But!! I am being completely serious when I say I only became insane about this ship after reading your 'Skin Of Evil' fic (link for anyone who wants to read it- it's very good) and all of our wonderful discussions and increasingly specific troisha AUs. So, thank you!
What are your favorite things about the ship?
The contrasts between them- and then, the unexpected similarities. The way neither of them have ever felt like they truly belonged anywhere (not even in their own bodies). The way they both see themselves as "broken" in certain ways (but not each other). The way they both fear loss. The way one of them basically grew up in poverty and has always been invisible to society at large, while the other is from an "aristocratic" family and has always felt overanalysed and dissected... In a sense, one of them joined Starfleet for a more comfortable life with better opportunities, while the other did so to escape a lavish life & suffocating "opportunities"- but fundamentally, they are both empathetic (in vastly different ways) and driven by the desire to help people. They both seek privacy; crave agency & space. Tasha was only around for one season, so I appreciate that they gave her relationship with Deanna importance- they stand up for each other, they admire each other's (very different) qualities and strengths- they even share a few giggles! Which is so wholesome when you think about how Deanna spent most of her youth feeling odd and out of place (being a mixed kid) in Betazoid high society, and Tasha had a violent childhood on a failed colony. I think the space they can give each other as two adults who never really got to be themselves as kids, to like- figure themselves out, and experiment with what all they can and want to do, is really lovely
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
... Is it unpopular to ship Troi/Riker/Tasha? I don't actually know enough about troisha fandom to answer this, sorry😂
Jadzia Dax/Kira Nerys- ship it
Yayyy one of my favourite DS9 ships! I got kiradax twice, so I'm going to do Kira/Jadzia here, and Kira/Ezri for the other ask.
What made you ship it?
Once again, the fascinating dynamic re the way they get along despite very apparent contrasts and differences (some of which may even seem irreconcilable- but they aren't, not to them!) Boosted of course by the insane chemistry. I mean, who was normal about that one drink scene from 'Dramatis Personae'? Not me🕺🏾
What are your favorite things about the ship?

Seriously, this pairing is so rich for explorations of both their inner worlds, and their fascinating relationships to their outer worlds! Kira, so fiercely protective of and devoted to Bajor- Jadzia, a joined Trill who never wants to go back home. Kira, aged beyond her years through a harrowing life as a child soldier- Jadzia, aged beyond her years via a 300 year old slug. Kira, the devoutly religious- Jadzia, the Starfleet science officer. Kira, the secret romantic who plays it safe- Jadzia, the unhinged xenophile who leads with her heart. Kira, the "traditionalist" who actually has a history of breaking the law- Jadzia, the "rebel" who actually constructs her sense of self so much around social structures and popular opinion. Kira, who deflects with anger- Jadzia, who deflects with humour. Gosh I could keep listing more and more and more but I don't want this to get too long so I'll just say their fire/water aesthetic thooo and move on hehe
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I understand (and appreciate) the desire to de-centre male characters in fic; especially given that canon was, on the whole, inarguably more invested in male characters & relationships- and it's also very true that once Jadzia/Worf and Kira/Odo got together, both women's screentime started to revolve around Worf and Odo more and more. I also firmly believe Kira & Dax deserved more screentime together in general, so I totally get the restorative value in doing this! That being said, some (not all- but still an appreciable amount of) kiradax content just doesn't feel quite them to me- and what I've realised is, this happens when fic just de-centers the men in their lives so much that now, they seem downright unimportant to Kira and Dax? At which point they start to feel ooc (to me). Like I understand not liking Kira/Odo- but a Kira Nerys that doesn't even think about Odo, like at all, not even in a platonic way, just doesn't read like Kira Nerys to me, you know? She cares about him so much! He's one of the most important and influential people in her life- and he was long before they got together. Same with Bareil, and Shakaar- I get that a lot of people find these characters and/or relationships boring, but they are hugely significant to Kira's arc- & those episodes reveal so much about her beliefs, her faith, her politics, the way she engages with the world, what makes her tick as a person. I feel the same way about Dax- the Klingon stuff is an important part of who she is. Idk, this isn't even something that really bothers me- I still happily read all the kiradax fic I'm vibing with even if it does this! But I have noticed kiradax fandom is not very fond of (or at the very least, indifferent to) Worf and Odo, and I just don't personally relate

Busy week this week! We had a bunch of new people coming over and posting, others archiving older stories and a decent amount of very excellent discussion over on Discord. Folks also seem to be falling in more comfortably with our posting/tagging rules, which is a great thing for archive searchability. We do still have a Review Hunt going on for the next week, so your chance to win art and/or cash is still on the table, too! Literally any review you write is eligible, so paste their links into the form as you write them! Next month I'll be able to somewhat automate that process, but for now, this is what it's gotta take.
