#Dean is so bi don't even TRY me
Text
HOW in the mother of GOD is SUPERNATURAL just out here giving us FREE, GAY CONTENT in season 8 episode 11 LARP And The Real Girl written by Robbie Thompson, directed by Jeannot Szwarc where they have a woman and a Sapphic fairy KISSING but they look at my boy Dean like. Ah yes. A heterosexual. Completely, 100 percently, undoubtedly a straight man who isn't in love with an Angel called Cas who happens to be a man. Oh how not bisexual he is, knowing names of gay bars, eye fucking men left and right every episode and undressing Castiel with his eyes at any chance he can get. He, the main character who would be the perfect opportunity to explore sexuality over FIFTEEN seasons and who has a problem with toxic masculinity as his biggest character flaw would get so much depth by exploring sexuality in that way. But sure. Yes. That would be too wild for us, the show making parodies of twilight and having a whole Scooby Doo cross-over episode.
But I digress.

Lord knows I'm gonna regret this because people go buckwild about ships, but look. You can love destiel, I'm happy for you. You don't even need to give me any evidence. Ship characters who haven't even met if you want, I'm not bothered.
But please, I'm begging, stop using the siren thing as evidence for destiel. The siren being Sam isn't even subtext it's just text, what with the 'I gave him what he needed. And it wasn't some bitch in a G-string. It was you' line so there are exactly two ways you can take it.
1. Dean's greatest desire is to have a good relationship with his brother (the siren can take on the shape of platonic desires)
2. Dean's greatest desire is to fuck his brother (the siren can only take on the shape of sexual desires)
You don't have to like option 2, that's fine. But in that case, take option 1 and run with it people. Because if you start trying to argue that:
The siren is evidence that Dean has sexual feelings towards a man, so Dean is bi, therefore destiel. What you're really arguing is Dean has sexual feelings for the illusory, perfect version of Sam.
Like idk guys, I see people joking about how not heterosexual Dean's siren being a man is and... you can totally watch it that way. But the siren isn't just a man he is a very specific man.... his brother.... soooo.

warning: heartbreak high season2 spoilers
i thought while i'm making my comeback i'll talk about a bunch of different shit like chelsea games and the way sharn freier is literally a star girl and now she's not my team's secret anymore.
BUT the 2nd season of Heartbreak High (if you are or aren't australian, please watch it. it's so good. it's on netflix) came out yesterday and i've already finished it and i have so many thoughts.
first off how the fuck did rowan manage to bag malakai and amery of all people. i'm sorry but this motherfucker rocks up in term 2, a new kid, dressed like dean winchester with the hair of sam winchester and 2 of the hottest people at Hartley, who were a couple mind you, fall in love with him. i have to congratulate the writers on actually understanding what a love triangle is though; instead of making it a love... line? also i took a complete stab in the dark about him hallucinating his brother not long into watching it and i was right :D
BI MALAKAI YOU WILL CATCH ME SOBBING IN THE CORNER I LOVE HIM SO MUCH
this may be hot take, but i can't stand the way darren can't take accountability for their actions. they absolutely came for quinni's throat when she expressed her feelings and told her that the world can't revolve around her and accommodate all her needs... the world can't always accommodate quinni... a queer, autistic woman... and then they don't even actually apologise for what they said to her? and then they seek out an old hook up to have sex when cash comes back from the last "mission" with chook. should cash have done it without telling them? no. was it the right thing to do? no. but going to hook up with someone WHEN YOU'RE STILL IN A RELATIONSHIP?? and then calling it drama?? fucking wild idk
i don't know how i feel about the spider redemption arc they tried to do, but fucking hell did voss piss me the fuck off. dude shut the fuck up, if you want to be taken seriously maybe don't wear a lycra body suit to work. i can't be mad about spider trying to be a better person but i don't like that they made him take a fucking huge jump back when missy said it wasn't going to work, or that the reason he was like that was because he had a hyper-feminist mum. she was horrendous trying to use missy to try and "fix him" and missy ate calling that artwork out for being fake. speaking of, missy is so strong minded, why the fuck did they make her fold for sasha's "people like him can't change" spiel, didn't even think, instantly agreed. sasha was so annoying
i kind of wish harper didn't drop the case, but i think it was something that took a lot of courage. the way woodsy taught her to drive and was so excited when she passed the test - tears were shed. i like harper and ant together i think? but i kind of wish they let it play out longer (this is me assuming there will be a third season)
uhh i can't think of much else, feel free to add.

Ok so I have a real question not trying to start discourse or any thing. If Dean knew how he felt about Cas slash knew he liked men why was he always so weird about gay people. I can see a reading where Dean knew how he felt about Cas but not one where he knew he was bi
this is totally a fair question and i don't think there's any one True reading or interpretation of the show/characters so it really just depends on what version of events resonates the most with you. the way the picture makes the most sense to me is that dean is a guy who was raised in the 80s-90s in a hyper-masculine environment with zero stability. i think all of those puzzle pieces slotted into place in his brain in a way that said "sex with men is okay, feelings are not." a furtive hookup with a dude in a seedy bar bathroom is fine. going on a date with a guy is prohibited.
and the thing is that this is kind of true for dean when it comes to women as well. a one night stand is a-okay. falling in love and settling down is not. so, you take that sort of mentality and then apply all the homophobia of growing up in the eighties and the nineties and a life lived out of a car bouncing between truck stops and, well, you get a dean who is absolutely flabbergasted when confronted with the fact that not only are you allowed to want something romantic with a man, you're allowed to say it out loud to other people. you're allowed to have it.
dean wasn't weird about gay people, necessarily. he was weird about people who were able to just be themselves. he didn't know that was an option. also, i don't know about y'all but as a queer person who doesn't necessarily read as queer at a glance, i too get Very Awkward when confronted with another queer person in the wild and it's not because i'm homophobic. it's because oh! new friend! must send telepathic signals that me queer too! my behavior around other queer people in queer spaces does not match my behavior around other queer people in random public spaces. i'm embarrassing and i see that part of myself in dean lol.
and dean being weird about other people making comments about his perceived queerness, to me, is a very normal reaction for a closeted person (or even someone who is selectively and/or quietly out). you can be perfectly at peace with who you are and still not want to be clocked. like???? homophobia is not a thing of the past. dean grew up during the AIDS crisis. he was, what? nineteen years old when matthew sheppard was killed? his reactions to people insinuating he might be anything even close to queer make perfect sense for someone his age, living the life that he did.
also, like, here's the thing: i realized i was queer when i was about eleven and i freaked out about it for about a day and then promptly suppressed the whole thing because of a deeply traumatizing childhood. being queer was the least of my worries and there was never any time to unpack it and deal with it so i just didn't. and then when i was about nineteen i started to have queer sexual/romantic relationships but continued to suppress the fact that EYE was in fact queer because, again, i didn't really have the space to unpack it. it wasn't until i was about twenty-three and surrounded by other queer people (in a platonic way) that i finally felt safe to fully admit to myself and to other people that i was in fact queer. and then i never really did a whole coming out thing. i just... lived my life openly as a queer person and let other people figure it out.
my point in all this is that i feel like my general experience/trajectory lines up really well with how i view dean's. he had a very traumatic upbringing so while he knew he was attracted to men, he had no time or space to deal with it. that didn't stop him from having sex with men, but he never really unpacked what it actually meant. it wasn't until he was older and had openly queer friends that he felt safe enough to fully acknowledge that part of himself. and then.. that was it. he just lived his life as a queer man. like, i feel like we actually watched that happen over the course of the show???
most importantly, i cannot handle any reading where everyone else knows dean is queer but dean does not know himself. i especially loathe the idea that sam Knows and has to explain dean's own sexuality to himself. that is so ugly. dean is a very self-aware person. you could even argue he is perhaps too self-aware at times.
anyway, this is all obviously just a watsonian explanation of dean's relationship to his queerness. it doesn't even touch on the doylist stuff but that's a whole can of worms i'm not really interested in opening on tumblr dot edu right now.
so, yeah. that's my personal reading.

Hey, hi! Hope you don't take this the wrong way but do you think some in the fandom cling to buddie with our teeth and nails because we (me included) survived destiel?
DHFJSNDNSN don’t worry I’m not taking this the wrong way at all. I went (and I guess im still going) to Destiel for soooo long. It was my first important ship. Like important, important.
I think the people who have gone through the trenches in other fandoms are more likely to cling to a couple they see or ship because they don’t get let down easily, yknow? If that makes sense
Even with the horrifying Destiel canonization/bury your gays thing, I still shipped it and genuinely firmly believe(d) that Dean also loved and was in love with Castiel.
However at the same time, I don’t think Buddie is at the point where people are ‘clinging’ to it, because it’s not been destroyed. It’s not like someone’s trying to rip its corpse away from our greedy little hands, and more like we still have yet to come and see. S7 has been such a kick in the stomach (affectionate), and obviously I don’t speak for everyone but personally I was blown away by the fact that they actually made Buck bi, instead of letting the “fanon” (today canon) die with us. Plus, having Oliver on our side has been so good and so refreshing, and so, so telling as well.
With all this I’m just trying to say that s8 is not even being filmed yet, and there’s so many storylines they could do, including Buddie – be platonic or romantic. I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but when I ship buddie I don’t think I’m way off base, or insane or delusional (like maybe I would’ve thought a few seasons ago) but I also can’t help it but to enjoy the bucktommy of it all, because seeing Buck happy and free and enjoying himself makes me so happy too.
So, I guess, in a way you could be right, and if we were at the point where it was clear bucktommy (or other Buck inclusive ship) was endgame the way Bathena is, then all us spn veterans (and others) could very well be holding onto something because we love it too much to let it go. But I don’t think we’re there.
I hope this answers your question in a way <3

Destiel Fic Recs
Who needs to stuff your face with turkey when you can stuff your brain with fanfic? Fresh out of the oven, please enjoy these fic recs.
Raise the Black by valleydean (emmbrancsxx0) @valleydean (Explicit, 246k)
There are passion projects and then there is Raise the Black which takes it to a whole new level. It's not surprising that the author of The Shawnee Trail and A Ghost Story knows how to write historical fiction, but there are so many gorgeous bits of pirate life in this fic from the superstitions to the metaphors tied to the sea.
The story is a Pirate AU. A chance encounter has left Cas, an officer from the Royal Navy, with a lasting obsession with Dean Winchester, the notorious pirate Captain of the Impala. When presented with the opportunity to defect and save his son from the abusive practices of the Royal Navy, Cas finds himself a part of Dean’s crew.
I cannot overstate how good this one is. The underlying pirate mythology and superstition, the horny sparring, the epic battle scenes and of course the incredibly unhinged Dean and Cas that drive this story. The story had me anxious, like literally unable to focus on work because I had to know what happened.
It's @valleydean so she gives us a happy ending, but she makes us pay dearly for it in angst (so sexy of her really).
And it isn't just the Destiel. The casting is phenomenal. I would die for pirate Meg. The use of the younger generation (Jack, Emma, Claire, Kaia) is amazing. Sam, Benny and Charlie as pirates. Truly we get so many great characters in this one y'all.
Without giving too much away, I'll just day that this one falls into the sweeping epic category and the results are staggering.
o weary traveler by dothraki_shieldmaiden @dothwrites (Explicit, 107k)
OK. So you know when you are in like Chapter 1 of a fic and already know it's going to be one of your favorites? That was this fic for me.
A mash-up of the Odyssey and Beauty and the Beast, this fic grabbed me and refused to let go. When Dean and his crew are shipwrecked on an island, they inadvertently anger its inhabitant, Castiel. Cas, an exiled angel, decides to take revenge, culminating in a Beauty and the Beast style pact for Dean to accept punishment on behalf of his wayward crew.
Cas in this fic is very much an ancient being lacking the human perspective and Dean is just some guy who hunts monsters. It's my favorite dynamic. The way they dance around each other and eventually come together is beautiful to watch.
Throw in some delightful worldbuilding and poetic prose and you have a powerhouse of an epic tale.
The Common Hours by quiettewandering @wanderingcas (Mature, WIP 29k so far)
I very rarely recommend WIPs, so you know when I do it's because I think there's something special about the fic. I honestly think this one and the process of getting a bit more information each week is worth diving into, even if you are normally a "wait until it's done" kind of reader (and if not, this one is worth at least marking to be read with stars and highlights and little hearts).
The fic is a twisty mystery that has me throwing out theories every chapter. Cas is an amnesiac trying to recover from trauma he doesn't understand or remember. Luckily, he met Charlie who has been helping him rebuild his life. But Cas is haunted by half memories and a forgotten life, especially the memory of a man with green eyes who inhabits his dreams.
I don't want to say too much because half of the joy of this fic is pulling at threads and watching to see how it unravels. I'll just leave it at this: the story is captivating and fresh and these versions of the characters instantly grabbed me and wouldn't let go.
Vibrato by Tiamatv  (Explicit, 69k)
Tiamatv really does write some bangers. I couldn't put this one down. They are both disasters in this fic, but in a way that makes you to hug them and smoosh their faces. Dean meets a cute boy, has a full blown bi panic, realizes he was an ass, and strikes up a friendship that morphs into a friendship with benefits that morphs into basically a long term relationship but they're both idiots. It's idiots to lovers (but still idiots) at its finest.
Oh and also Cas is a super old genetic vampire. Whoops. One of the most delightful things about this fic is how well tiamatv captures the ancient and terrible being and also just some accountant dynamic that makes Cas so deeply loveable.
Despite some heavy stuff, this one is fluffy cotton candy most of the time and it's really about their irresistible dynamic. It is immensely readable.
The Sweetest Con by aimforsplendor @aimforsplendor (Mature, 19k)
If you are looking for some fairly low angst fun, this DeanCasBang (Taylor's Version) entry is an absolute delight. Dean and Sam are Robin Hood type con men using tech to steal from the rich and give to those who need it. They've finally found the head of a crime network, a billionaire resembling a particularly prominent and news worthy one recently which makes it fairly cathartic actually. But the mission is threatened when Dean gets sidetracked by a particular blue-eyed hottie.
This one is plain fun with a healthy dose of humor and really likeable characters. This one is truly just readable. Fun and fairly light and with enough interesting turns you keep you on your toes.
Anything You Can Do by FagurFiskur (Explicit, 21k)
From the Dean Winchester is an absolute disaster genre, this is a surprisingly sweet, crack-taken-seriously smutty romp.
Dean overhears his soon to be ex-girlfriend Daphne talking to a friend about how their mutual rebound relationship isn't working, especially because her gay ex-fiance, Castiel, was better in bed. Dean can't possibly let that stand.
So he does the only logical thing and tracks Cas down. And hooks up with him. So he can win at the sex. Even though he's totally straight.

I feel fans should be able to interpret shows and characters any way they want but it really bothers me that shippers die on the hill of Dean is such a closeted bi sexual and Sam is the biggest heterosexual out there. I love these characters because they are extremely toxic and codependent on each other. The story would not be the same with out that. Why would anyone look to Supernatural to be their all time gay representation love story when it most obviously is not. it just blows my mind how out there Destiel shippers are and how much they truly hate this show and hate Dean without even realizing it. I need someone to figure out how we can get rid of them from this fandom...LOL
Yeah, IDGI either. Fandom is supposed to be about just having fun however you want with the building blocks from the canon + your imagination. It's not even the main point that they're hilariously bad at interpretation, project too hard onto the characters to even see them, can't understand context to save their lives, pointedly ignore a million things that directly contradict their agenda, and too much of their so-called proof is actually gross backwards stereotypes about sexuality and masculinity (neither of which they seem to understand very well at all). If they were just having fun with it, who the fuck cares? Sure, it's annoying, but a lot of fandom is annoying because it is so specifically tailored to things not everyone is gonna like. There are other canons with fans who are fine admitting they just like playing in the canon world but not the canon itself that much.
No, the problem is hellers are not content to just enjoy their non-canon interpretations in fandom. They feel entitled to flood any and every tag associated with the show, trying to demand their interpretations be considered indisputably canon fact because ... reasons ... and anyone who doesn't agree with them is A Bad Person because ... they say so. Their ship is the greatest love story (n)ever told, the best representation evar in media! It's the only important thing about SPN - and if they couldn't change the canon, they can change the fandom narrative! The fact there's actually no there there under their overblown thousands upon thousands of words of inept meta is why the very suggestion it's not canon, that someone doesn't see it as the greatest thing ever, that maybe Dean is actually just a heterosexual instead of putting on an elaborate performance of one or even that Sam might not be the straightest character ever written? Is taken as an attack upon their self-declared status as the real main audience. Which makes sense, because they never were. SPN was anything but subtle as to what its actual focal relationship was.
To some extent I get how they echo-chambered each other into believing their ship was/would be a thing in canon. If you just look at the size of the piles on piles of cherry-picked nonsense they accumulated over the years without actually engaging your brain to see how variously flimsy, out of context, or how many other more sensible interpretations there were for any of them? If you wanted to believe and surrounded yourself with others who did, too, and kept talking each other up, spending way more time doing that than watching the show? It's no wonder some of them ended up with really skewed expectations.
What I don't get is how they're still going this long after the show ended. SPN is over and there's no more 'Well, next season for sure!' to promise themselves. There are increasingly more stories out there now in a variety of media which are centering deliberately, openly LGBT+ characters and relationships they could invest in championing! Hell, just saying screw canon and burying themselves in writing their idea of "better" fanfic is a perfectly reasonable way to deal with disappointment, no matter how self-inflicted. Instead, they're still here making up elaborate conspiracies about how SPN was something other than what it blatantly obviously always was - because admitting they were wrong and the only thing they ever liked about it was their own OOC fanfic very, very loosely based off of it? Well, that's more than a bit embarrassing in light of how long they spent campaigning and how vehement they were about it totally being not just A Thing but The Most Important Thing Ever. So I don't know what would actually get them to move on, they clearly love being miserable and wrong and pretending to be martyrs over it far too much for me to comprehend.

"I don't know anyone who ships Wincest who are upset that people feel Dean represents their queerness. The distinction between canon and fanon is important because truth and accuracy matter. Saying Dean is *canonically* bi is not supported anywhere in the show. Canonically, Dean repeats that he doesn't swing that way, sleeps with a ton of women, uses the straight person app, and never even responds to Cas's declaration of love - or even mention it after it happens. The way he sits/speaks/stares is not canonical anything. Canonically, Supernatural is terrible rep. It deserves and should get no accolades for stuff it didn't do. It shouldn't go down in history as groundbreaking queer anything, because it broke no ground. Saying it did is rewriting history and misrepresenting the show. And that matters because we are still in an era where we are surrounded on all sides by people trying to rewrite history to be whatever they want it to be - politically, socially, in the media, everywhere. As a queer person, it's important to me personally to make the distinction between canon and fanon because if we insist that a man who never makes a queer move in canon is good rep, who says he's straight and only sleeps with women on screen, then that's what we'll get.
In fanon? I have no problems with Dean being bi, trans, gay, aromantic, secretly ace - however folks relate to him. Fanon lets you read between the lines all you want.
OFMD gave us canonical queer characters - characters who verbally or physical confirm their queerness. So did Black Sails, Interview with the Vampire, Sex Education, Euphoria, Supergirl, First Kill, Nimona, Owl House. Dean does not, despite repeat opportunities.
Saying that Dean's canonically bi feels like gaslighting. It doesn't matter how many times people say it - Dean was conceived of as straight according to Kripke, written as straight in dialogue and action in the scripts, and played as straight according to Jensen. On the other hand, canonically Cas is gay. He was conceived of as genderless originally, written with bi plots, and ultimately played and viewed as queer by S15 according to Misha. It is a legitimate queer journey, one many people have gone through. I would still argue that it deserved much more onscreen development and dialogue to be good rep - see OFMD and Black Sails, e.g. Queer Cas deserved better than he got, especially with turbohell seconds later. But that's the difference - queer Cas IS canon. Bi Dean is not.
And yeah, it's a fiction show, and 50 years from now not many people will care. But the truth should still matter. I've shipped Wincest, Megstiel, Destiel, Sastiel and a ton of others in-between. Megstiel at least got a kiss, which is more than Destiel got.
tl;dr I fully support everyone shipping all the ships, see yourself in any character you want, embrace all the queer fanon, write and art and vid and whatever. But Wincest isn't canon, and Dean - on the show, not in our heads - is not bi. And truth and actual rep both matter.
And time and time again, we've seen that the studios will give us the bare minimum. If we say a character conceived, written and acted as straight is good queer rep, they have no reason to give us characters conceived, written and acted as queer. And THAT'S what I care about."
This is the most mature and well written discourse I've read about Dean sexuality. I'm glad Casey allowed me to share it here.

Resume : Reader is a little obsessed with Leonora and started stalking her to be closer. ( Just pure cuteness )
Warning : none
Ship : Leonora Lesso x Reader
Tumblr media
Leonora just loved teasing you.
She knew very well how much power she had over you and of course, she had noticed how every time she was close to you, your pulse would get impossibly higher and that your cheeks would get to a perfect cherry red.
For her it was just pure satisfaction to know she could break you so easily. You were like an innocent little bunny and she was the big bad wolf waiting to catch her prey.
It wasn't bothering you though, it was pretty much the contrary. You loved it so much that you kinda started to search for the women in the castle, only wishing to see her or just get a bit closer to her so she'd notice you and maybe give you a bit of attention.
To be quite honest, you had developed a huge crush on the Lady and you just couldn't spend a day without being able to see her at least once.
It didn't take long before you realised that your feelings for Leonora had became way to strong and that your little stalking session more uncontrollable.
You had tried to keep yourself away really but to no avail.
The Dean of evil simply was way to perfect and intoxicating for you to stay away.
You had grown literally addict to the way her perly green eyes would fall on you with pure hunger, like if the women actually wanted to consume you whole.
For you it was the only way you could ever feel desired by her because no way you'd tell her how much you craved her touch and her lips on your skin.
You had to keep it a secret and until today, you thought you had succeeded.
What a fool really to think you could keep something like this form the Dean of Evil.
Or course she knew.
She knew the first second she saw you trying to sneak around her for the first time.
After all Leonora Lesso was everything if not aware and careful of her surroundings.
She have been tough to keep her sense in alert and to be quite vigilant of every little details so it really didn't take long for her to notice you.
Yet, Lady Lesso had decided not to tell you and just enjoy your cute little attempt to sneak on her.
Really she thought it was adorable and she quite enjoyed it to be honest.
Unknowingly to you, the women had grown quite fond of you to, so it wasn't a problem for her to know you close to her at all time. It was a way for the Dean to know you were safe and well so she didn't had any intention to stop you.
That, until one day when Leonora spotted you hiding so close to her, that she felt and smelled your presence all around herself.
Until now, you never had the guts to get so close to her. It was the first time she realised how easily she could literally ambushed you in your corner and devour you all and the only idea of it was way to exciting to ignore.
So she act and didn't waist a single second before literally rushing toward you and pressing you against the wall you were hiding against.
Leonora then grabbed your two wrist and brought them up your head with only one hand of hers.
Your eyes had gone wide the second you realized how fucked you were. Your lips let out a weak whine when you suddenly felt the women you love, press her body against yours a bit more followed by the delicious sensation of her lips on the skin of your neck.
The Dean of evil while tasting your skin moaned and bit at your flesh for an instant, letting your eyes close in pure bliss and your mouth mumble her name so so tenderly.
Following your voice after that, was only the redheads praises to you before you felt yourself blush furiously and realise your heart literally started beating like crazy.
Oh my darling girl, you don't even know how much I love to feel your pulse races for me...
You are such a good little girl, so obsessed with me that you need to feel close at all time don't you?
Your eyes went immediately into hers when your mind registered what Leonora had just said. You bite your bottom lips then, before shyly sending her a nod.
Lady Lesso's face lit up at your concession, bringing a wicked smirk to her lips followed by her beautiful and terribly sexy voice that made you dizzy.
Well, I'll tell you something then love...what if you stayed in my chamber tonight.
You felt your heart literally stopped at some point just after she propose you that, because you couldn't believe it.
Leonora Lesso was asking you to join her for the night...god it was a dream come true.
You really wanted to answer her, more that anything but you were frozen in place, your lips a little bit open in shock and your heart hammering back in your chest.
The only reaction the redhead had to your apparent loss of word was to giggle a little and kiss your lips with her and caress your cheek delicately.
You rapidly came back to your senses at the warmth and taste of her, kissing Leonora back with love and passion. Then, after you both separated from each other, you smiled and nodded with so much eagerness that the taller women kissed you back this time much more rapidly before she bit her lips and gave you a wink.
See you later then my little stalker.

Disclaimer before you continue.
I am going to be mentioning some things that may condradict a few oneshots I have made in the past but that was years ago and these are my real views on these characters.
Also I'm a writer so I write what my readers want to see though it isn't my favorite thing bc I only find writing enjoyable because I'm writing about what I like.
Also I wanted to publish this on Bisexuality day of Pride Month but I just couldn't wait😅 So early celebrations💖💜💙
With that said please comment your own thoughts and opinions!
Okay, so to begin.
There is a big difference between Sam and Dean when it comes to their sexualities. As in the writers chose to write Sam as a comfortably straight character who isn't put in situations with other men that have him stumbling over words or actions but didn't chose to do the same for Dean.
They are the writers of the show. They didn't have to make Dean so queer.
To me Sam is 100% straight but the kind of straight that if there was an instance in which he was attracted to a man he would act on this with little to no hesitation.
Dean on the other hand is written at first like he's overcompensating, trying to prove that he is straight just like his brother BUT the situations he his put in with men can at times be mirrored with the situations Sam is put in with women.
I would also like to mention that Dean is a masculine man. Yes he enjoys certain things society deems 'girly' but most of the time he comes off as masculine.
But that shouldn't even matter because I don't know is Supernatural is aware but masculine men can be bisexual.
It isn't a new concept they aren't a dying breed. Men can drink beers, go hunting, flirt with women, love guns, cars and cowboy films and still be attracted to men.
That's just fact.
Anywhoo
The earliest instance Dean is shown to express queerness is around S4. (I am not mentioning Cas because I really don't need to to make any of my Dean is bi points) One of my favorite episodes for this is Sex and Violence.
For many reasons.
● The bad guy is established to kill his victims by causing them to fall in love with him which would then allow him to kill them.
And the method used is swapping saliva, so kissing.
So when Dean is put under this trance and Sam finds out that Nick Monroe is the monster they're after he never questions how he his saliva came into contact with Dean. Most likely just assuming and completely okay with the fact that they kissed or engaged in sexual activity.
Also I would like to note that Nick was with Dean at the same time Sam was with the hospital lady.
It's almost as if they both had love interests for the episode.. hmm *strokes not existent beard thoughtfully*
● Another point which is real fact with proof that I can't believe actually exists is that back in 2009 (when the episode came out) the actor who plays Nick Monroe (one of my favorite ppl love him on 9-1-1 Lonestar😍) had and interview or something like that where he admits that upon reading the script he believed his affect over Dean was mean't to be romantic/sexual and not brotherly like the tried to pass it off as.
(You can look up the article on google)
●Lastly, during my rewatch of SPN during each episode I watch I go to IMDB to look and trivia of the episode and or reviews and most the reviews for this episode (Sex and Violence) were about how viewers believed it was mean't to be the start of Dean's bisexuality in the show.
Some of them go into good detail so you should definitely look at them.
S5 enters Dean's 'man crush' on Dr Sexy and scenes such as Dean casually lifting up a blanket to see a guys dick, the scene with 'The Chief' which tbh I just find funny and so forth.
But ignoring all the small moments of bisexual awkwardness I'm gonna jump straight to Dean and Reoccuring Male Characters
● Leo
I'm going to do this in order of Dean's oldest male lovers to newest (with the ommison of Castiel.)
We meet Leo Webb is S15, he's an old 'friend' of Dean's I'm guessing they would have met when Dean was around 23-24.
I love to headcanon that Lee was Dean's first romantic relationship with another man and Lee helped him to be comfortable with himself.
In the episode they are obviously hinted at to have been more than friend and are told that they had fivesome with three triplets meaning they canonically had sex.
This again is something writers did not need to add but I feel as though the only way they could get away with Dean have sex with other man is if they stuck a few women in the middle.
Another moment mentioned was when they reminised about how they got drunk on a hunt (leaving what else could have happened to the viewers imagination)
To be honest I wish Lee was introduced earlier because I love what he adds to Dean's character but I'm surprised they even gave us him at all seeing as I thought s15 was going to be strictly Destiel.
In canon his character was a 7/10
And when left to the imagination or with subtext included 9/10
(Note: I'm going off what I remeber about this episode because I physically and mentally cannot watch s15 again)
●Crowley
Dean hated Crowley until he became a demon which allowed them to become close friends. There isn't much I can say about them because their relationship was not romantic only sexual.
But is VERY canon that they had sex- albeit it was in threesomes, foursomes etc
●Benny
Benny was a vampire. Dean was supposed to hate him but the character was made to act like a rebound for Dean after his fall out with Cas.
(I'm gonna do a proper Destiel take later but just for now I'll mention it.)
It's a common trope in televsion that when a couple breaks up (Dean and Cas) in the following season or episode a new love interest arrives (Benny) to stur things up and crrate a love triangle.
Benny and Dean became very close and whether or not they were aware of their feelings for each other is unknown. But it was incredibly upsetting when Dean was forced to kill the man he clearly had feelings for to save his brother.
Benny was a great character on his own or with Dean and it was such a let down to see him killed so quickly.
●Aaron
Okay this one is a bit funny but let me be CLEAR I don't believe an attraction ever really passed between Aaron and Dean.
Let me explain.
The scene we all know and love where Aaron is tailing Dean and Dean gets all flustered after Aaron lies and says he was hoping to maybe get a date with Dean is amazing.
The bisexual flusteredness of Dean and how he handled it was hilarious.
But in all seriousness I feel like Dean was only so flustered because he was isn't open about what he believes only he knows so Aarons attraction to him caught him off gaurd.
Fun Fact: There is a recording of the SPN writers talking about how they wrote the scene to play on Dean's queer panic and how it could open doors for people to see him as more than just into girls etc
●Arthur Ketch
Okay this one is just for me but OH MY GOD why did Mary have to sleep with Ketch??? Him and Dean could have had the best hate sex ever 😫
Anywayss *wipes tear* here are some honerable mentions.
○Gunner Lawless
First of all SPN KNEW what they were doing when they intercut Sam meeting his first crush (a woman) with Dean meeting his favorite wrestler/obvious crush (A man)
Dean's obsession with Gunner was similar to Sam's and was no different from how anybody else would act around their celebrity crush.
Also they definitely fucked (I know it in my soul.)
○Donnie The Bartender
Okay so we ALL loved when Dean decided to spend his time away from Sam and outside the bunker doing something he found fun.
Eating nachos, hustling rich kids and flirting with the cute bartender.
I wish they interacted more but the single wink has to suffice I guess.
I still have to make a fic where Dean goes home with him bc that totally would have happend.
-
-
Oh my gosh I'm so tired so I have to end here
In conclusion Dean Winchester is Bisexual and SPN writers are pussies
Stay tunned for my Destiel part😁
goodnight everybody👋🏾😴

Funny how a professional author and screenwriter summarised the plot of a TV show, in which one being stood infront of another and admitted his feelings, and one of the beings could not reciprocate at that time, and one of them also got blasted to another plane of existence leaving the other depressed and alone, as romantic.
Funny, you mean to tell me that's not platonic dude-bro behaviour? Who'd have ever guessed that was romantic, eh SPN.
Honestly I am gonna say something: as someone who has come into the SPN fandom following 15x18 craze I too was very vocal about "them" being homophobic and calling the fans "delusional" without actually ever asking who those "they" were in the first place? Maybe I don't know fandom history well enough or don't think there is much point in it after the confession but I get the impression that people will often be angry with the writers for "queerbaiting". That was also something I was aware of for years before I started watching spn at all.
I think everyone who blames writers for queerbaiting in spn is wrong. SPN is queer not because a bunch of fans decided they were gonna have a very queer field day with this seemingly "macho" show. It is queer because for years writers neatly put one subtly queer block on another to build a queer narrative. Sadly they couldn't be as vocal about it as Neil Gaiman is because a)homophobia was more rampant back then b) the network had done market research and the results said that destiel wasn't something people wanted. Yes, throughout the years there have been some writers in the mix and some actors (jared for example is still very anti destiel. Jensen for me is on probation rn lmao) who were against destiel but I would say that most people in the winters room were very much on the board and made very specific choices to prove this. Remember when Misha said , even years before the confession how they were all aware of Destiel and had had talks about it? How Mark Sheppard said they all knew Cas was in love with Dean? I feel like Destiel was an established idea amongst the creatives working in the show it's just that they couldn't be vocal about it because well, if anyone is going to be blamed for any homophobic crimes it's the C*W network isn't it? And after the whole Misha biasco and how the network was urging him to stay out as bi because that would be more profitable, I didn't even think the anti destiel stance was really fueled by homophobia but more likely by their conviction that most of their viewers would absolutely flip shit if Dean Winchester was anything other than straight. And yes, you will ask WHO wouldn't want Destiel to be canon?? And I'll tell you that I know it feels hard to believe that people would watch SPN for anything besides Destiel or the queer themes so intricately woven into it but having been to a SPN convention now I can say that these people very much exist and most likely were the group they used for market research back in the day.
Sorry this got a lot longer than anticipated but all in all, I think (most) writers very much always saw dean & cas as romantic because they write them as romantic and tbh at this point I'm under the impression that nobody is trying to nohomo Dean & Cas. Except wincesties, that Adam Williams dude and Clif & other few 'Dean can only be straight because he is part of my straight fantasy' girlies. And some con organizers. Which is an entire new topic tbh and, again, I do not know a lot about fandom history, but I think most transgression against fans was always comitted at cons and cons are the 'sales' side not the 'creative' side of things so they would have to follow the networks guidelines. Or sometimes make their own stupid choices I guess (sincerely, fuck you Daniela).

You Don't See Me
Summary:
Cas has been in love with his roommate Dean for years, but he knows he doesn't have a chance. Nothing demonstrates this fact more clearly than the way Dean is constantly trying to set him up with people.
It hurts like hell, having the man he wants trying to match him up with anyone else.
In a moment of extreme frustration, Cas tells Dean he already has a date planned for that weekend, and then his best friend Meg convinces him to keep the ruse going.
Dean's reaction is not what he expects.
~~
Cas: actually, I have a date this weekend.
He hit enter and stared at the screen. Three dots appeared on his chat with Dean, and Cas' stomach swooped.
"Oh, shit, shit! What did I just do?" he groaned, dropping his face into his hands.
Meg's voice in his ear pulled his head up.
"What did you do? Do I need to help you move a body?"
It was Cas' turn to roll his eyes.
"Sure, Meg. I killed Dean while on a video call with you, but you blinked and missed it," he said sarcastically, rubbing at his forehead in frustration. His fingers brushed over his eyebrow ring, and he chewed on his lip, playing with that piercing fretfully.
"That's my unicorn. I always figured if you snapped you'd knock his feet out from under him and ride him to the floor, but if killing him made you feel better…"
"Shut up," he muttered. "Shit! Meg! I told him I have a date this weekend!"
Cas watched as an intrigued, amused look crossed her features, lighting her lovely brown eyes with laughter. Another message from Dean popped up.
Dean: that's awesome, man. Who's the lucky girl?
A surge of irritation swept through Cas at the assumption. Even though Dean was bi, he still had blinders on.
Cas: HIS name is Mick.

I keep seeing posts that are like "interpretations of bi!Dean and gay!Dean are equally valid!" and I used to be like, sure, straight!Dean is definitely wrong but beyond that, see him how you want, who cares.
But now (esp after the Last Call script) I just don't understand the gay!Dean truthers? I follow quite a few on sm, and when I initially followed them I was like "they accept Dean is queer, that's good enough for me." But now they're really starting to get to me and it's not really worth arguing about to them, but I wanted to rant to you about it, cuz you get it.
The script literally included "gorgeous women" in the bar. Dean has canonically been sexually AND romantically attracted to women. He's based off THEE bisexual Neal Cassady.
Like I'm not really trying to defend m/w relationships (lol) but why do even queer ppl insist on erasing his identity when it's so clear? Why do they have to take that away?
Gay!Dean in AUs is one thing, but in the actual, textual canon of the show, Dean is bi. And no, gay!Dean and bi!Dean are NOT equally valid interpretations. And I don't think I'm an asshole for saying that 🤷🏼♀️
Tumblr media
Sorry it took a few days to get to this. Work and life have kept me busy and tired!
Unironically and non-sarcastically, Anon, I'm glad you've seen the light and seem to understand this topic more now. You are, of course, entirely correct. And you're not an asshole for saying it either.
I'm going to take this opportunity to answer your (potentially rhetorical) questions, and also bounce off of you and lay some stuff out about this topic in general at length for the first time–despite the fact that it may turn me into public enemy #1 again. I am already hated for non-combatively voicing these facts on Twitter (this thread tends to be considered one of the "ground zeroes" of the nonexistent "debate" lol), but I have avoided being dog-piled on Tumblr so far, so... fingers crossed I can miraculously keep it that way!
My hope is that anyone who is predisposed to taking this topic very personally just moves on instead of attacking me (or subposting me?) for any of what I'm about to say. I'm also not forcing anyone to read this, before anyone's like "that's way too many words" or "it's not that serious lol."
I do think this topic is important. I've made the decision to publicly spell out why. And if anyone doesn't want to read it, that's their prerogative.
To your questions, Anon:
I think a lot of this comes down to a fandom-wide problem (all fandoms recently, not just SPN) of not understanding the difference between headcanon and canon, the dimensions as to why that distinction does have its uses and its necessity, and the value in both. I'll get into this later.
But in this fandom specifically, based on observation and lengthy conversations I've had with a dozen long-time fans who are my friends... I personally think it's maybe a new dimension of viewpoint that's branched out from a holdover of "all interpretations are valid" being the party line people have clung to a very long time. (That’s also true in other fandoms, but I think it’s especially true here.) It's a form of solace people don't want to deviate from. No one wants to be seen as or feel like the ~jerk~ who's ~invalidating another person's view of canon~ in response to someone else's knee-jerk reaction of hurt. This is a fandom with early-2000s cultural baggage and context, where people dealt with feeling like the "crazy fangirls" who shipped Destiel and dared to call out queer subtext. Misha's "You're not crazy" tweet exists for a reason. I do feel like a lot of well-meaning people–aside from misunderstanding or being ignorant to the analytical roots of this topic and why they absolutely matter–just know what it feels like to have their thoughts on queer content in a show feel "invalidated," and they don't want to be perceived as doing that to other people. And/or: they’ve felt invalidated before (in this fandom or others!), and so they’re hypersensitive to anything they perceive as doing that to them again, especially if they tied personal identity into the projections they’re making onto the media they enjoy.
I understand that people don’t want to seem ~mean~ or make waves. I also don't want to seem mean or be mean, which is why I try to be as clear as possible whenever I talk about this and I never go after people directly (or interact/reference any of the many subtweets from people who openly talk shit about me. haha). But the facts shouldn't be seen as "mean"; they are simply facts. And yes, they absolutely matter.
Because the thing is... none of the above has any bearing on the nuances of the topic at hand, the indisputable fact that Dean is bisexual in canon and that claiming otherwise is erasure, and the truth that none of this should be seen as a threat to people's headcanons.
These are all things that people should understand, and I will not apologize for knowing that and saying it. Misunderstanding this–making the false claim that “all interpretations of Dean’s sexually are equally valid as long as you see him as queer”–is an act of bisexual erasure in this context, and it often (unintentionally!) plays into biphobic talking points. And yeah, in my opinion, that’s something people should care about because it’s worthy of both personal and fandom examination. It is, in fact, why “representation” matters at all.
Let’s not kid ourselves: the bulk of this fandom-wide discourse is about Bi Dean vs Gay Dean. So, y’know, that’s the bulk of how I’m going to address it to just get it all out there.
Right out the gate, let me clarify this: I am not saying–now or ever–that those who are self-proclaimed “Gay Dean truthers” or argue that “Dean being gay in canon is a valid interpretation” are deliberately coming from a place of malice and the intent to contribute to bisexual erasure. By all means, I’m sure most aren’t! Nonetheless, intent does not equal impact. I’ve even seen people say “I’m a Gay Dean truther and I’m bisexual, so how could I possibly be contributing to bi erasure by arguing for Gay Dean?”  But in this situation–as in any other–no one is immune from unwittingly perpetuating harm, even including bi people. And it’s important to understand why that is.
“Interpretations” are not opinions, not all are equal, and they do require some level of skill. This is not a personal attack, or a moral judgement on anyone, or somehow a threat to people’s enjoyment of a favorite character. It is just fact.
Gay Dean is not a valid possibility in canon. There is no lens that justifies an argument of it with canonical basis. I have to break down why, in order to sufficiently express why claiming otherwise is a harmful position to take, so bear with me.
(No, this is not an invitation for a Gay Dean truther to treat this like a “debate” with me or waste time writing out a counterargument. Please just exit the tab if you’re somehow here battling that urge.)
For someone to say that Dean is gay in canon, here is an incomplete list of what has to be erased, ignored, or explained away:
• His sexual attraction to, romantic love for, and relationship with Cassie.
• His sexual attraction to, romantic love for, and relationship with Lisa (whether or not one thinks she was ever the ~ultimate love of his life~, attraction and love were present.)
• His stash of and enjoyment of porn that includes women, which is referenced many times.
• The moments where he was seduced by a female-presenting monster.
• Each and every time he made a reference to or joke about his attraction to women.
• Any fling he ever had with a woman on screen, and the enjoyment he had in the process.
The man is canonically sexually and romantically attracted to women, and he has acted upon that and even enjoys that about himself in wildly diverse contexts. It is a blatant part of the text of the show. (The fact that we are at the point where this is somehow a main point of contention rather than his attraction to men does make me feel a tiny bit insane, to be honest.)
Now, in my experience (which I don’t claim is comprehensive!), the people who argue for Gay Dean tend to explain ALL of this away under some form of universal umbrella of Dean being “performative,” a variation on compulsive heterosexuality they ascribe to him. The claim or explanation tends to be that Dean was performing a mostly-faked attraction to women based on his father’s expectations and outward pressures he received in the culture of his life. Moments are often cherry-picked out of context to support this “reading.”
Who is Dean supposedly performing FOR, even in the moments where he acts on his attraction to women when he is alone? How does this explain his significant relationships with women like Cassie and/or the legitimate visible enjoyments he received from those interactions, as well as his flings with women throughout the show? How does this explain things like the Last Call script, where Dean is very clearly written as attracted to “gorgeous women,” a factoid that is not only very clear on screen but also (of course) written in literal black and white?
(There are no sufficient answers to these rhetorical questions. Once again: please do not waste time trying to give me any.)
And what evidence are Gay Dean people using for comphet or performative Dean? The “evidence” is often a misread of canon, pointing towards the consistent theme and false goal presented in the text of the show of characters’ efforts to strive for an “apple pie life,” aka a heteronormative ideal family. Gay Dean people misrepresent what this theme and through-line in the show is actually about, which is the totality of learning to accept your life rather than striving for something ill-fitting, that what you need and want need not be mutually exclusive (family life including fulfilling romance + hunting life can coexist), family is what you make of it and how you define it, and there are no true limitations on what all of this “should” be. While these themes are inherently queer, they are not about narrow performances of masculinity, femininity, or sexual identity, but about making space for ALL forms of all of the above–AND about identifying what it is that one wants and thinks they can’t have.
Namely, for Dean, that’s a version of settling down in a life that fulfills him in every direction, with an open and honest mutual relationship with the person he is in love with. This latter point would be true whether Cas was a man or a woman (though the fact that he is a man of course adds further dimension of interest to the story). Dean doesn’t think he can have a romantic relationship / family that lasts, and by later seasons that yearning is a key part of his character. The times it didn’t work out for him weren’t because those other people were women, but rather because the “lesson” he internalized from traumatic instances of loss is that hunters don’t get to do ~the love thing~ or get the settled down life. This is stated in the text of the show multiple times, and that’s also why Dean seeing examples of hunters who made any kind of balanced life work (especially masculine queer hunters like Jesse and Cesar) is pointed and purposeful. To say it’s about comphet instead (with no sufficient canon evidence that supports that) disregards a key point that’s central to Supernatural’s story, and in my opinion it disregards it to its detriment.
For Dean’s journey in particular, it is about freedom from limitations of structure, and knowing that he contains multitudes. The things he got from John–loving classic rock and loving his car, for example–are no less core joyful parts of Dean simply because they originated from his father. Dean can love classic rock and still occasionally love a Taylor Swift song, for example. He can love cowboy movies and manly movies, and also enjoy chick-flicks. It’s the idea of learning that there are no limitations, not that masculine interests are not inherently something he loves for himself or that aren’t important parts of his identity. It’s an expansion to openly include more, not a switch or a narrowing. The same applies to his sexual attraction and his queer identity. He can be attracted to cowboys and bikers, and also be attracted to gorgeous women. Him being attracted to / loving women does not mean he cannot and does not feel attraction and love for men; likewise, him being in love with a man does not mean he wasn’t and isn’t attracted to women.
(“Last Call,” as an episode, exists in part to drive the totality of these points home, and emphasize that Dean’s attraction to men is something he’s known about himself for most of his life and acted on previously. So is most of the queercoding and queer subtext applied to Dean–which is specifically coding him as bisexual. His attraction to men is sometimes established or made clear because it echoes his attraction to women, etc. etc. Dean’s canonical attraction to men is a whole other post.)
So here we come to why saying otherwise and trying to shoehorn a comphet narrative onto Dean in canon is harmful:
Aside from the fact that to claim Dean’s joyful attraction to women is performative is to cut out chunks of the story and is thus not supported by canon, and it relies on making assumptions about and projecting onto the text… unintentionally or not, the implication is that bisexuality is not queer enough, or that being gay is somehow “queerer” and thus more compelling and a preferred concept, and that attraction to different genders is a heterosexual / straight trait requiring removal. No one is queering a text in a more revolutionary way or unlocking a ~secret good Supernatural~ by making a bisexual man into a gay man. That’s simply not how this works.
“Preferring” an argument for Gay Dean in canon requires explaining away or misreading all of those moments Dean has with women, essentially replacing them with trauma or suffering or discomfort that–in my observations–also sometimes rely on stereotypes of gay men. It also involves potentially preferring to twist them into behaviors Dean must have universally put himself through not out of genuine joyful desire but at minimum because he felt like he “should” or at maximum in an attempt to “fix” his “gayness,” even when no one was watching. And it points to the pressures Dean experienced about living a life that fit him fully–pressures that exist not just in his world, but also in our patriarchal world and society–and it implies that queer people can’t authentically experience attraction or love to someone of a different gender, because maybe they’re actually just “performing” the heteronormative ideal. As in: a “visually queer” relationship is the end goal, right? For Dean, that’s an m/m relationship... so surely m/f matters less, or maybe it can’t be a genuine and significant part of a queer person’s life.
Once again: I do not think any of this is intentional on the part of Gay Dean truthers, nor do I think it’s done with malice. Nonetheless, these harmful biphobic viewpoints permeate these conversations and misconceptions when people say these arguments are valid.
There is no canonical basis for explaining away all of Dean’s moments with women, and the story does not provide or point to any kind of cohesive narrative reason to do so. YES, people absolutely experience comphet in real life, and those experiences are valid and exist. YES, real gay men can and do sleep with or have nuanced romantic relationships with women before realizing they’re gay later in life. No, that does not mean that’s how analysis of a fictional character in a fictional story always works, especially in regards to a story built over time like Supernatural’s unique approach and the way it was molded to place queerness and specifically bisexuality at the core of Dean’s story.
Ascribing comphet to Dean in canon–or making any other insufficient justification for explaining away his attraction to women–is personal projection. And yes, it is bisexual erasure.
This is not a position fueled by personal hurt for me, as I would say the same here whether or not I was personally bisexual. It is an acknowledgement that these conversations don’t exist in a vacuum, and that’s something everyone should care to understand. I know what comphet storylines look like in fiction, and I know they are worth defining as such, and in other fandoms I even defend that very loudly. This is not the case here, and to say it is requires mental acrobatics that are objectively unsupported by canon... and invariably insisting otherwise perpetuates one of these harmful biphobic viewpoints whether or not one realizes it.
To say Gay Dean is a legitimate read of canon–which it is not–supports people who are erasing his varied sexual and romantic attraction to a different gender simply because they’ve decided they want to ignore that. “I like the idea of Dean being gay” does not mean that he is gay in canon, and writing meta to that end is a problem. It’s not an invalidation of someone on a personal level or some weird variation of homophobia to say that, and I do think people should maybe examine why they seemingly like the idea of him being gay more than him being bi, or why they staunchly defend it (or any other “different queer reading”) as a possibility.
I understand there may be the urge to be like “is it that serious” or “this is just a CW show,” but to that I would say… then why are we all here?
Clearly, most people do still care about queer representation on some level and understand that queer subtext is present and acknowledge that Dean isn’t straight... hence the origin of this new prevalent concept of “as long as you say Dean’s queer then it’s fine.”
But in any piece of media, the text is the text is the text. The text can also be compelling, and fascinating, and contain value whether or not it’s an exact reflection of you personally as a fan and as a person. Sometimes there is arguably even greater value in being able to find reasons to relate to the humanity of a character or in a story even though elements differ from who you are personally. It is an exercise in empathy, and it is a pillar of why humans tells stories to each other to expand our viewpoints, and it sometimes results in examining the sources of that empathy. It’s why “representation matters”: not just so we can see ourselves, but so we can see others, and find reason to empathize despite differences. There’s unquantifiable power in that, and it’s also why the diversity of queer experiences and identities should be championed and acknowledged both in fiction and in reality, not turned into a monolith. Our solidarity amongst our individual queer differences and identities is our truest version of strength and authenticity. We are not all exactly the same, and that’s a good thing. When care is taken to specifically convey that in fiction, it is worth not only acknowledgement but also defense.
So: do we or do we not care about why representation is important, and why these sorts of conversations should exist at all? About censorship of queer storylines, and diversity in the queer community, and solidarity in differences? About bisexual men, a vastly underrepresented group in fiction, and the specific censorship that affected Dean’s bi story accordingly? And about how these viewpoints people can place onto fiction through fandom-wide conversation–like implying Dean is ~queerer~ if you say he’s gay, or that you’re somehow sticking it to the CW and “straight culture” if you suggest he’s gay–can influence biphobia that translates into ways people see bi people in real life?
In other situations even in this fandom, people understand the value of diverse queer experiences. No one would dare to say that “you can argue Charlie is bisexual in canon because as long as you say she’s queer it’s fine.” Charlie is a lesbian. It’s very, very clear, and she shows and states that she is only attracted to women. Dean’s attraction to women in canon is equally clear, and is part of his bisexuality. Why is erasing that defendable?
Look: it is people’s God-given right to write whatever fic they want about “what if” variations of Dean’s sexuality through a different lens. It is not their God-given right to make things up about canon and call it analysis.
It is a universal truth that fandom is always going to take canon and mold it into other versions that they love, for their own personal reasons and in ways that have value to them. That’s why transformative works like fic exist, and it’s why fandom is awesome, and I’m glad people use aspects of their favorite stories to tell other inspired stories that are of personal significance to them. But the word transformative is used for a reason: it’s an alteration of canon. It’s not a bad thing or a personal attack on people to say that.
There is a difference between understanding canon and writing actual meta / analysis of the show, and writing AUs for ones own enjoyment and fulfillment. (This is true on AO3 or on Tumblr/Twitter. I often see posts that are positioned as “meta,” but again, are just cherry-picked weirdness.) These differences are important, as is understanding how headcanons and fic affect surrounding conversations and fandom perceptions. And this fandom seems to have a very big problem with understanding the difference between these things, while taking it extremely personally in a negative way when people try to explain why the difference matters.
Confusing analysis and transformative fandom does a disservice to both, and denying the value in the former is not only a form of anti-intellectualism but also removes some of the beauty in the latter. If we can’t distinguish and differentiate between canon and headcanon, we can’t discuss the value in understanding the canon, nor adequately discuss the artistic value and power in creating derivative variations from it in personal ways. Both are different, both are equal, both are vital, and insisting the distinction is needless hampers conversation across every space. And nowhere is that more true than when one is discussing queer representation and queer censorship, like in the case of Supernatural. Again, why are we here? Why do we care? You cannot argue for and discuss the problems of censorship sufficiently if you don’t understand what was censored–and in Dean’s case, that was his love for Cas and his bisexuality.
I leave you with this (probably unneeded) analogy:
Imagine Dean’s a zebra.
(Sorry, EDS community; not that kind of zebra.)
People are trying to say “Dean is a black and white hoofed mammal <3″ and well, that’s accurate, but that doesn’t mean him being a zebra isn’t its own unique thing. A whole bunch of people are looking at him though and saying “well I prefer to say that Dean’s a black and white horse,” because they like that viewpoint better. Close enough, right? A black and white horse is basically a zebra, right? And then there’s the people who are like “I think Dean’s a cow!” and it’s like, okay, no idea where you came from, but whatever.
The point is that those are all entirely different fucking things. They’re different animals. Someone wanting Dean to be a black and white horse doesn’t make him less of a zebra. Pretending otherwise is absolute nonsense.
This debate/discussion/discourse is equally nonsensical. That is the logic (or illogic) that applies here.
Just because Dean is “queer” doesn’t mean any queer categorization underneath that umbrella suddenly equally applies.
Dean is bisexual. And he is “queer” because he’s bisexual.
Those are the facts.
And for the love of God, please... I really don’t think I’m an asshole for saying it.
So, to whoever made it this far: please do me the courtesy of not hating me for it or trying to bait me into a fight.
I’m tired. Thanks.

EDIT: Couple of good additions!
•  @doctorprofessorsong added some good details about how some of these harmful biphobic concepts translate to real life, and real things that bi people struggle with.
• A lesbian anonymously sent in her perspective as someone who enjoys gay Dean headcanons/fic and agrees with this post, and agrees that the fact that Dean is bi in canon is important.

supernatural s10e20 angel heart (w. robbie thompson)
knew it must be jimmy because he's got the little boy hairstyle like jerry in that episode of seinfeld
Tumblr media Tumblr media
s10e20 / seinfeld s5e8 the barber
huffing angel grace (??) combined with djinn-ish hallucinations, all right
oh, so we have two amelias. good planning. sam's and claire's mom. i'm going to not try to contemplate the logistics of claire living on her own and looking this put together and with cash to burn because i doubt the writers thought about it for more than 2 seconds either. i guess she's 18 now?
CASTIEL I need help from both of you. You were both troubled teens. You speak her language.
snorted
DEAN Close enough. Come on, give me something to punch already. I'm kidding. I'm fine. I'm just...I'm fine.
everything's fine!
DEAN Look, I'm just saying, she's been surviving on her own for quite a while now, and ... and then partly because she doesn't have anybody to answer to. You know, there's... There's nobody holding her back. CASTIEL We just found her in a hospital. You telling me that she'd be better off on her own? DEAN I'm saying she might be stronger on her own.
no one to keep him her accountable and not out slaughtering randos? he's fine though.
you know. one thing i really liked about mulder and scully's dynamic was that it was largely always them against the world. having there be friction between sam and dean so often that they overcome and then surprise some new fresh hell pops up, it is emotionally tiring and tiresome because it starts to feel less like the exception than the rule. i can see how 15 seasons of 20+ episodes is often going to lead to this type of problem. i'm still gonna bitch about it
Tumblr media
(another motel with a full sized appliance. not retro, just old fridge. i guess that's something but still wonky)
SAM Never got the chance to find out. My mom died when I was a baby. CLAIRE I'm ... I'm sorry. I didn't ... SAM Oh, no, it's okay. I-I got to know her later in life. And, yeah, I suppose we got along okay. CLAIRE What? SAM In this line of work, death isn't always good-bye.
casting back trying to remember when this sam actually interacted with mary and not her hallucination/ghost/someone wearing her face. was it a time travel thing? ugh. (5x13 i guess?)
claire has bomb ass hair that i'm making heart eyes over but the overstyling for her character is a shame. the curled ends, the half up but looped with the wrap around covering which would require pins? yeah, no. little bit reminds me of earlier teen wolf seasons where they did very beauty queen hair styling on the girls
Tumblr media
cas with the gift bag and dean's face, i'm cracking up. EVERYTHING'S FINE, dean's face twitches in rage
DEAN (standing up from the table) All right, I'm gonna get suited up and head back over there.
CASTIEL I'm coming with you. CLAIRE I'm coming with you, too. DEAN (turning towards Sam) You wanna get in on this?
so, they're just gonna roll up to a crime scene with an 18 year old in tow? bring your daughter to work day, uh huh
Tumblr media
CASTIEL No fighting. DEAN (scoffs) Yeah, tell her that. CASTIEL (sternly) Both of you.
yes, dad 😒 cheap laugh, i'll take it. leaving the two least (currently) sensible people together who don't get along seems like a poor choice
CASTIEL So do you think she's better off on her own? SAM Cas, she just turned 18. CASTIEL You were alone when you left for college at that age, weren't you? SAM Yeah, but that's different. CASTIEL How, Sam? SAM Here's all I know ... going it alone, that's no way to live. You being there for her, even if she thinks she doesn't want you to be there for her, that's good for both of you. CASTIEL Maybe, in the end. SAM In the end.
so is our sam admitting it wasn't good for him to leave for college alone? that kind of shakes up my idea of his characterization. maybe if it's just he wished he had kept contact with dean (begrudgingly adding) and john while at college? but still having his go at a normal life?
i mean, cute little claire and dean bickering-bonding with minigolf, even if i think it's not remotely believable :P dean's feeling less stabby, i guess. and an angel sword, okay. sure, why not
so even worser angel man was what, huffing bits of her soul? yes, apparently
ah yes, tearful reunion with mom, apologies all around, claire appreciates what dean and sam do for people, and mom's dead.
so i guess amelia and jimmy are soulmates too then? if they actually share a heaven? the whole conceit that everyone but soulmates has heaven alone is such a weird one. but do they get like, facsimiles of the people they love if they don't get to share heaven with them? like dean's memory-mom. or are all these people really just chill never talking to another soul ever. weird choices. i mean, it gave us canonical soulmates sam and dean which was a *wild* choice, but
Tumblr media
ha ha. so yes, adopted by jody too
CLAIRE Will you keep an eye on him? (Dean and Claire look over at Castiel who is talking with Sam) He's been through enough.
????? what. why would she say this? someone needs to keep an eye on him because he consistently makes the worst choices when left to his own devices -_-
golden hour lighting and nice choice of music at the end at least. blue eyes crying in the rain by willie nelson. eke out some feelings i wouldn't have had otherwise

https://www.tumblr.com/eisforeidolon/718435014496354304/sure-you-can-interpret-deans-sexuality-however
I was literally called biphobic by a heller because I said in canon Dean is straight. She squalled about how she’s bi and Dean is so special to her because he is just like her, and just because he doesn’t act on his attraction to me it doesn’t mean he can’t be bi.
Like, bish please, he says he doesn’t swing that way specifically at least twice, and in other words a bunch more times. Dean. Says. He. Is. Only. Into. Women.
Also, another person on this same forum chipped in with suggesting not using the word canon because it’s triggering. 👀. Only if you hate the text of the story. 🙄
It really isn’t a difficult concept to grasp. And, for real, like whatever you want and ship your little heart out, but stop screaming how it’s canon when it isn’t, and how if you don’t support it you’re a bigot. It’s insane.
Also, you noting how he could tick a box and they’d still explain it away. Well, on the hook-up App his profile says “interested in: women.” What do they do? Photo-shop it to say men!
Ugh!!
Sorry for the rant, but I feel you on your frustration with this.
I'm sorry you had to put up with that, anon. I was a multishipper until I got pissed off at all the posts shouting you had to be a homophobe to think canon detestiel wasn't a thing, but at least it wasn't done on a personal level.
Oh, man, I just find that kind of bizarre projected overattachment-as-interpretation so fucking weird and off-putting. "I'm bisexual and I see myself in Dean, so Dean must be bisexual! I was abused as a child and John reminds me of my abuser, so John must have canonically done X type of abuse!" As if any character is remotely relatable to you then they have to be exactly like you/your experiences in all the details? What an absolutely bizarre and myopically self-centered way to engage with fiction. Like, with a perspective like that do you get that other people than you exist and have different experiences, even when they might have some things in common, too? Just ... IDGI and I don't want to.
I also just can't with the idea that the word canon is triggering. I ... can't. As if it hurts you that there's a source material that doesn't match the fantasies you made up in your head instead?! What.
Again, yeah, the problem isn't the ship at all. It's that they can't just stay in their lane and be remotely normal about it - trying to insist it's canon despite the actual canon because [giant pile of horseshit, projection, stereotypes, and wishing reallll hard] and insisting anyone who refuses to play along with their make-believe must be a bigot. I don't care if people ship a ship I personally can't stand anymore, I care when they're fucking delusional flaming assholes about it.
And don't even get me started on how they wail about being queerbaited and then do shit like photoshopping that screenshot to say men to quite possibly actually queerbait other fans into believing it's legit canon. Ugh.

So we talking 15x07 specifically tonight I see
Can we talk about how they for real slapped Dean AND us in the face with that episode?
We get to see Dean in his high-school-girl drama phase full on eating junk food while watching TV weirdly on the bed after his boyfriend left
And he pulls a "I don't need no man" and goes out for a case and ACCIDENTALLY BUMPS into what is clearly hinted to be a fucking EX BF/CRUSH/HOOKUP from one of the darkest periods of his life (I know for a fact stanford era dean was ever so fucking miserable) who shows his just how great his life could be if he retired
And that's where I get fucking mad.
Because that's all Dean wanted. To retire and live his final WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN like 50 years with the people he loved, in a house with a room to call his own and a kitchen he could use to make food for his family to enjoy and not to try to survive
Amd in he end the dream js revealed to be exactly that. A dream. Because Lee stole that life from innocent people for over a decade, living in constant fear and stress and anxiety over the monster he was keeping hidden. Don't even get me started on what that symbolises
And here Dean is when Dean loses the last bit of hope for normality he had. Cuz even when they were about to get rid of Chuck, he wasn't looking at it with the "toes in the sand" retirement dream he was before. He was looking at it like another apocalypse mission
They showed us what Dean could have been.
Happy, surrounded by people who loved him, free, open, living the dream. And then they poured gasoline on it and burned everything
And the whole shit with Lee? The bi lighting? Dean completely ignoring/turning down a hot texan waitress who had been eating him with her eyes since he walked in? THE ORGIES TALK?!?!!
Honey. What the fuck was that.
AND to top it all of, once it's done and Dean has had his lonely hours of the car to think about how much of a dumpster fire of shit the world is, and what a monster he is for killing once again someone he loved, CAS is back and Sam is hurt and he has now to deal with it while still trying to process the fact he will not be truly resting ever
What the fuck
