A/N: well it looks like many have asked for a part 2 lol. (Dance Class 101). So, I shall not disappoint, I hope. This looks to be a 3 part story haha.

This one does not have any romance between the reader and Mattheo. Part 3 will. Have to build up to it.

Beautiful Swan

Theodore, Lorenzo, Mattheo, and you had always been close nit. Each having a roll in the group. Theodore was the one to always talk before thinking, with words that hurt and were almost always on purpose. Lorenzo was kind, the voice of reason. Mattheo was the one to be aloof, yet somewhat of a goofball. And you, you were the one to keep the group together, like glue. You were thoughtful and considerate, always there when they needed you.

But after that exchange of words under the tree in the courtyard two weeks ago, you had kept your distance. You didn’t care to engage with Theodore or Mattheo, for Theodore’s words had hurt. And with Mattheo’s support too, that crushed you. Lorenzo was the only one you were speaking with, as he was the only one to come after you.

Part of you had hoped Mattheo would have come after you, apologizing for his agreeance with Theodore’s words. And ask for your forgiveness. But that was wishful thinking. For he didn’t chase after you. Nor has he apologized to you. The few times he had been around you and Lorenzo, he would act and talk like nothing happened. Which only irked you more, and you would end up leaving. You didn’t want to be around someone who hurt you.

The Yule Ball was tonight, the students of Hogwarts bursting with excitement and wonder. With how things were going with your friends, you weren’t that excited for the night. You had hoped for the night to be fun with your three friends. Maybe some mischief and mayhem, but not enough to get you in trouble or to be traced back to you. You had come to accept going stag and had hoped your friends would have been there for you.

But from the gossip going around the school, Theodore was taking some snooty Ravenclaw girl. And just today’s gossip reached you, and confirmed your fears that Daphne is Mattheo’s date for the ball. Hearing it in passing from a fellow Slytherin girl in your year, crushed what was left of your hope and spirit.

So here you were, sitting on your bed with your back against the headboard. Your right leg crossed and resting under your left leg, that was hanging over the side of the bed. It was a weird position to be sitting in, but somehow it was comfortable. In your hands a well-loved copy of (favorite book). It was something that always brought you comfort, and this was the time you needed comfort the most.

But as much as you tried to focus on the words on the page, the damned curly brown hair Slytherin that you were crushing on kept invading your mind. First its sadness and hurt that he chose Daphne, how she would get your night. Then you thought about how their night would go; from her getting to walk in on his arm, the looks all the females would give her, all the while she would smile like the cat that got the cream. How they would dance and get cozy. And then how she would be the one to share kisses with him.

Marking the page in the book, you threw said book onto the bed before you in a huff. You were now mad, practically seething. Why does Daphne get your night and Mattheo? Where is the fairness in that? You had been there for him, shown him that you were the perfect choice. Yet he chose her! Not to be vain, but you always thought you were a step up from her. Both in brains and looks. Not to say you were some beauty, but you were decent enough. So why weren’t you enough?

Running a hand through your hair, you slightly tugged at the strands in your grasp. All the while so many questions running through your head. Maybe I’m not pretty enough…or smart enough…I’m not good enough for him… Those thoughts washed over you, leaving you cold. The fiery flames of anger being washed away with self-doubt.

Suddenly Pansy Parkinson stuck her head into your room, she looked around till she spotted you. “Oi (Y/N/N), Lorenzo asked me to get you to see him in the common room”.

You sat up straight, “do you know why?”

She sighed. “No clue. Go find out yourself”. And with that she left you alone.

Reluctantly you got up off your bed, put on a light cardigan over your casual lounge around clothing, before heading down to the common room. There were only a few students in the common room right now. It didn’t take long for you to spot Lorenzo by a fireplace up the back of the common room. Making your way to your friend, you flopped down on the two-seat lounge next to him.

“What did you call me down here for?” You sighed.

Lorenzo smiled at you softly. “I knew you’d be wallowing in self-pity in your dorm room. Thought it would be good for you to get out of there and out of there too” he stated pointing back over his shoulder towards the dorms and then pointed to your head.

You rolled your eyes. “Oh please, I’m not that dramatic”.

Lorenzo scoffed, “yes you can be”.

You shoved him lightly, but knew he was right. It was scary how he could read you and understand you. Maybe that is why you got along so well. Leaning back against the lounge, you looked to the fire before you both. Watching the flames flicker, while soft crackling filled the silence between you too.

“I take it you heard the latest gossip?” Lorenzo asked, following your movement and gaze.

Absentmindedly you nodded your head. “Of course, how could I miss the proclamation of Daphne getting the honour of accompanying the Slytherin heart throb? It’s all the girls were talking about in passing on my way back to my dorm after breakfast”.

Lorenzo nodded. “Yes, it has got tongues wagging. But do not let it get to you”.

You shot him a series look, “it doesn’t bother me one bit. Why would I care?” you dryly laughed crossing your arms over your chest, like a pouting child.

“All I am saying is don’t let it dampen your night. You are still going, yes?” Lorenzo asked with concern.

Looking to your friend you wanted to tell him to wipe that look off his face. But in stead you uncrossed your arms and softened the look on your face. “Yes, I am still going Lorenzo. I might be going stag, but I will be there”. And gave him a soft, warm smile.

Lorenzo returned your smile. “I’m glad you are. But you won’t have to go stag, I’ll be your date! Or we could go stag together? If that’s a thing” he asked unsure.

You laughed. “Going stag together might equal us going as each other’s date. So just say were each other’s date and be done with it”.

Lorenzo softly laughed scratching the back of his head. “Yes, well then date’s it is”.

You both went on to discuss the smaller details about going to the ball together. Such as a time and where to meet, if you both would go on your own or with friends, etc. Once that was sorted you headed back to your dorm room to start getting ready for the ball. Starting with showering and putting on something casual till you put on your dress. Next was hair and then light make up. You had never been one for heavy applied make up, it didn’t suit you.

All the while you were getting ready, your other room mates came back to start getting ready. All four of you were conversing, talking about the ball, what to expect and being silly. You all helped each other with hair or make up if needed, and of course you all helped each other with your dresses. You went with a simple (colour) floor length light gown, thin straps resting over your shoulders. The bodice fit nicely but wasn’t too tight. The bodice itself was covered in beading of (colour) and (colour). The skirt of the dress wasn’t too poofy and flowed down in a river of (colour).

Your room mates swooned over your dress, commenting on how lovely the shade of colour was against your skin. You thanked them and admired each of their dresses as you put on your (design) pendent on a thin chain, gloves, and matching bracelet to your necklace. One by one your room mates made their way from the room while you slipped on your shoes and made sure you had what you needed in your small wristlet bag.

You were about to leave the room too before catching a glimpse of yourself in the full-length mirror across the room. In a slight daze you moved over to the mirror, upon coming face to face with yourself, you looked over your appearance. From head to toe you examined yourself. At first you felt unsure and doubting yourself. That was till one of the girls from your room came back.

“Forgot my lip gloss” she laughed before taking in the scene before her. She knew the look on your face, and the mirror before you. Putting the pieces together she understood. “(Y/N), you look beautiful. You always do. Don’t ever question yourself or doubt yourself. For you are the only you. And you are always the best version of yourself”.

You felt tears prick at the corner of your eyes at her words. Flashing her a shy but happy smile, you nodded. Finding it hard to use your words from such kindness she had shown you. Without another word, your room mate grabs her lip gloss before heading out once more but says for you to hurry up and not keep your date waiting for much longer. Which makes you laugh.

So, with those heartfelt words, you stand up straight and make your way from your room, down the stairs to the common room with what you hope was the grace of a swan. No more thoughts about Daphne. No more thoughts of Mattheo. No more worrying about what people thought. Tonight was your night. A night to have fun with your friend, to dance and let yourself enjoy the magic that The Yule Ball would hold.

As you had descended the stairs to the dorm rooms, Lorenzo had seen you and crossed over to meet you. Holding out his right hand, a warm smile on his face, you gladly accepted his hand and returned his smile.

“My, what a transformation” Lorenzo mused. “From ugly duckling to beautiful swan”.

You laughed at his words. “Oh please. I wouldn’t say I have transformed”.

He shook his head. “Yes, there is, you have confidence and a glow about you”.

You rolled your eyes, “it’s called letting go and not caring about people”.

Lorenzo laughed at your reply. “Well, whatever it is, keep it up. But tonight, you are the beautiful swan, and many will notice that”.

Deciding to not indulge Lorenzo’s words further, you linked your arm around his and made to move forward. Which gave your friend the hint you were ready to go. And go you did. Walking from your house and up from the dungeons, you both made your way to The Great Hall. You both passed other couples or groups on your journey, many noticing you both and watched you both pass by. You held your head high as you gracefully walked beside Lorenzo.

Upon reaching The Great Hall, you and Lorenzo held back, waiting for those before you to enter the hall. Among them your room mate that gave you a peptalk. Noticing you and Lorenzo, she shot you a bright smile and a thumbs up, which made you chuckle but return her smile. Once the entrance was clear, you held onto Lorenzo’s arm once more before proceeding to enter The Great Hall.

The space that usually house meals had been turned into a Winter Wonderland! The floating candles flickered in a warm tone, with snow softly falling accompanying them. The walls housed draped cloth in dark tones. There were small trees and shrubs around the room, giving it a cozy feel. While you looked around the room at the décor, Lorenzo was smiling watching your expressions. And watching you were everyone you passed, not that you noticed.

Mattheo was standing with his date, Daphne, and both Theodore and his date Sarah. He was making small talk with his date, while Theodore was listening to his date ramble on about something he didn’t care to listen too. Mattheo opting to tune out his companions and thinking about you. He hadn’t seen you since breakfast, when you chose to eat on your own before taking off right after finishing eating.

Suddenly Mattheo’s ears perked up when he heard your name come from the passing girls that walked by. Confusion crossed his face, why would they be talking about you? Now he wished he hadn’t tuned out his surroundings, or else he would have known what they had said about you. Maybe you had come alone, and they were talking about pitying you? Maybe you had come with someone that they were making fun of you about bringing? Possibly they were commenting positively or negatively on your dress?

“Oh wow” Daphne said in shock, bringing Mattheo back to the present.

Upon turning his gaze in the direction his date was looking, Mattheo was met with Lorenzo. And on his arm was the most beautiful sight; you. Mattheo thought you were pretty every day, but tonight you were a vision of grace and beauty. You were smiling and shining brightly. He noted how slender your neck looked with your hair up. How your (colour) eyes sparkled with wonder and joy. How the apples of your cheeks were a soft, dusty red. How your lips were painted in a glossy (colour), which was a contrast to your everyday lips. The dress you wore was the last to be noticed, how its colour complimented your skin tone and hugged your frame perfectly.

“Oh, how the ugly duckling has transformed into a beautiful swan” commented Theodore with a laugh.

“She does look beautiful” mused Daphne, with a slight sourness to her tone.

Silently Mattheo agreed that you were a beautiful swan, but he genuinely meant it. It was like the beauty on the inside had finally made its way to the surface, and everyone was finally seeing it for themselves. And this was the moment he kicked himself for letting his chance slip by with you. Regret surfaced for how he had not stood up for you, and siding with Theodore. For faulting in not pursuing you.

Feeling familiar eyes upon you, you looked around before landing your gaze on the person who had you second guessing yourself, Mattheo Riddle. You noted how good he looked in his dress robes, how he had combed his curls, yet you wanted to walk over to him and mess them up. Then you noticed his date at his side. Daphne had stepped up her game, but you told yourself you looked better.

And you felt better. You felt confident. So, deciding not to dwell on what should have been. You turned your attention from the boy who held your heart, and to the one at your side. Giving him a soft smile, you both continued to move on and further into The Great Hall. For the night was young, and The Yule Ball hadn’t begun yet.

English Folk/Traditional Names for Common Plants & Herbs

These are known now as folk names, but back in the medieval era and well into the 18th century, these were the common names for some of the herbs and plants in use in witchcraft (and generally!) today.

This list is not an exhaustive one; the names given here are just some of the names that were used primarily in England for common plants within the region.These plants have other unique and wonderful names in many other cultures and languages throughout the world.

So continuation on my hunter x witch polin au. I just kinda wanted to world build a bit.

"Colin!"

Colin jumped at the sound of his name. He had only just stepped through the door after leaving the witch's home, and three of his siblings were waiting for him.

Anthony and Benedict were still in their gentleman's clothing. Daphne, who was also with them, had yet to change out of her hunting dress with the removable skirt.

"Are you alright Colin?"

Colin nodded. "Yes, I'm fine. I just had to rest for a bit after tha fight with the gorgon."

Colin knows he should have told his family, or at least Anthony, about their new neighbors. He knows he should have, but damn it, he was curious.

Magical creatures don't just blend themselves around humans like this, especially humans of high society. Not since before the dark ages when the last of the ancient kingdoms fell. A time when humans were not only fighting wars amongst them but with magical creatures too. After that, magical creatures mainly kept to themselves in isolated areas. From Colin's experience, witches prefer the natural world and would be more likely found on the edges of coasts or hidden by the trees of forests. They don't end up in Mayfair!

Colin was also curious about that mind witch. He's almost positive she has put some sort of spell on him because why won't he stop thinking about her? And why would she heal him? Yeah, witches typically aren't on the hunters' radars, but that more has to do with them keeping to themselves, not that they like one another. If it was any other witch she probably would have left in the street for fate to decide what happened to him. That baby witch with that shotgun seemed to agree with that sentiment.

"You know you don't look like you've been in a fight with a gorgon," Daphne will tell him later as she looks him over for injuries. "Which is peculiar since I know that that gorgon managed to cut you with her claws right here." Daphne pinched Colin's side which had no signs of being injured at all.

Colin had to admit that mind witch did good work.

"Daph!" Colin exclaimed when Daphne pinched him again.

Daphne sat across from Colin. "Colin, what really happened after we were seprated?"

Colin paused. He knows he should tell at least one of his siblings about their new neighbors but he found he wanted to keep the witches across the square his secret for the moment. Or at least until he can satisfy his curiosity.

Damn what spell did that mind witch put on him?

"Felicity, do you need anything while I'm out?" Penelope asked as she adjusted her cloak and hood.

"Where are you going?" Felicity asked. The young witch was practicing her potions work. Particularly measuring out her ingredients.

"Mama asked me to get a few ingredients today. I'll be in Cambridge for a little bit."

Felicity let out an excited noise. "A papaya! If you're going to Cambridge, can you see if Phillip has a papaya!"

A papaya? Penelope turned to look back at her sister. No one in their coven here in England or in Ireland has never used a papaya in their potions or spellwork before.

Maybe Felicity was trying something new? She did make friends with that witch from the Americas recently.

Penelope found herself nodding. "I can see if Phillip has a papaya."

Felicity grinned brightly. Excitement in her eyes. "Thank you!"

Penelope adjusted her hood and walked into the library. Pulling out an atlas, she turned the pages until she found one of England. From there, she pulls out a moonstone and malachite compass and sets it over Cambridge. Leaking her magic into the compass the witch pictures the university town. Whispering in a language forgotten by mortals, she whispered, "Allow me to voyage on the beams of light."

A tug on her magic and Penelope has found herself in Cambridge.

"Now where is my favorite vampire," Penelope said as she tuned into the thoughts around her.

We shall celebrate with drinks tonight!

Mr. Hawthorne would be a good candidate to approach . . .but how to get his attention? All her cares about are drink and women

If I crossbreed plant A and plant C then should produce a bigger crop and a sweeter fruit.

"There he is," Penelope said as she made her way into one of the University's churches. Walking inside she let her hood drop.

But combining plant B and plant D could make the fruit ripe faster if crossbred.

Penelope glanced to her left. Sitting if the rear pew was a brown haired vampire. She took a seat next to him.

A vampire and a witch walk into a church. Penelope giggled in thought, sending the message from her mind to Phillip's. Penelope giggled.

And the hunters lost their minds. Phillip replied in his mind.

Penelope giggled again.

Phillip looked over at Penelope. Another pickup Penny?

Penelope nodded. With the season starting soon, Mama wanted to stockpile on roses for beauty potions.

Phillip nodded. Getting up, Penelope readjusted her hood over her head. Phillip made sure the brim of his top hat was low enough so the shadow would protect his sensitive eyes along with his tinted spectacles.

The two made their way to Phillip's rented home, which also doubled as his greenhouse thanks to spells he traded with the Featherington coven.

Every available surface was covered in some sort of plant. Phillip organized each room by the conditions each plant needed to survive.

Penelope took a deep breath as they entered. It always smells so lovely in here. One would never guess a vampire owned all this.

Phillip rolled his eyes. "I'm not exactly a normal vampire."

"No, you're not Pip," Penelope agreed smiling at her friend. "At least not like the ones they tell in stories around here. Who would have thought if you traveled further south, you would find vampires similar to fruit bats. And that they can produce offspring with blood sucking vampires."

"No one from around here would," Phillip said as he popped a raspberry into his mouth to suck on. "So what are we getting today?"

Penelope pulled out a list. "Mama requested a dozen red roses, a dozen white roses, raspberries, strawberries, and Felicity wants a papaya if you have one."

Phillip paused his gathering of the order. "A papaya?"

Penelope nodded. "That's what she requested."

"For spellwork or potions?" Phillip asked.

"I'm not sure," Penelope said. "Felicity made a new friend in the Americas recently and they've been writing to one another. I don't know if she wants to use it as an ingredient though or if she wants to eat it."

Phillip shrugged his shoulders and the two made their way into the tropical room. A flash of humidity hit Penelope when the door opened. The fruit Phillip picked up reminded Penelope of a squash in shape, the color green with a some yellow. Phillip then picked up two other fruits. One of them was rounder, the coloring being red and green. The other was a very dark green

"Here's the papaya," Phillip said handing Penelope the squash shaped fruit. "Both the seeds and the meat inside the fruit are edible. And if Felicity is interested in more tropical ingredients mangos and avacods are also popular ingredients. Don't eat the seeds for these those."

"Thank you Pip," Penelope said, placing all the new ingredients in her bag. "Do any of the spells need to be updated while I'm here?"

"The cold snap room could use a little bit of attention."

Penelope nodded. "Of course."

The cold snap room was a special area of the greenhouse that was mainly used as rest area for plants that go dormant during the winter months. Or if a plant benefits having some time in a colder environment. Stepping into the room Penelope could tell what Phillip meant. The temperature was a little warmer than what it should be. She'll have to adjust it.

They both took a seat at a nearby table Phillip took notes at. Penelope worked her magic on the spell around her.

"How is your new home? You recently moved to London correct?" Phillip asked.

"It is a new experience," Penelope answered. Her thoughts wandered back to the hunter. There was something about him that reminded her of the fay she grew up with. Hidden meanings in his words, like a puzzle or a secret to learn. Penelope always did like learning what those hidden meanings were. "I actually met an interesting neighbor the other day. He was a hunter."

Phillip looked up, concern washing over his pale features. "A hunter."

"He lives across the square from us actually," Penelope continued.

Phillip shook his head. "Your mama is gonna have a fit."

"Oh most defiantly," Penelope agreed. "Felicity actually almost shot him with sunshine."

Phillip couldn't help the laugh that came out.
