So you’re considering watching RWBY

Or you’re trying to convince someone else to watch it

(I made another similar post about this a while back)

But you/they aren’t sure. Something is holding you/them back. Like:

“But the animation n stuff is SO BAD!” - Sure. In the beginning it’s not great (though many of us now look back on those early volumes with fondness.) But you have to understand, RWBY started as a passion project at a small company with a budget of like $20 (yes I’m exaggerating but STILL.) They simply didn’t have the funds for good animation. But, after volume 3 came out, the show became a literal international hit and so the budget increased. And, subsequently, so did the animation quality. You can see that progression easily enough here. The quality goes from this:

“It looks stupid and childish!” - Yeah, in the beginning it’s meant to seem silly. And it still has its cartoonishly silly moments later on too. But those silly moments are meant to soften the blow of the PAIN. Because, while RWBY starts off as a silly, “good always triumphs over evil” slice of life magic academy type show it does not STAY that. There is PAIN. LOTS OF IT! If you keep watching, you’ll find out within like 6 hrs worth of watching that it’s not just some silly slice of life show. There is a complete 180 along the way when you find out what RWBY is truly about. The show actually delves into some pretty heavy stuff. PTSD, abuse, neglect, abandonment issues, alcoholism, loss, the inability to move on from loss for some, and more. For more on this, check out this post.

“I saw some stuff on Twitter/Tumblr/Youtube about how bad it is.” - That’s because there are ppl out there who want the show to be something it’s not. Or they got upset when things didn’t happen the way they wanted. Like Blacksun shippers or Adam and Ironwood Stans. Or they just want to shit on something. But EVERY show has its haters. Every piece of media has its haters. And they like to be loud edgelords about it. Sometimes just to be controversial and pick a fight. But that doesn’t mean shit. There are ppl out there who absolutely hate your favorite pieces of media, whether you’re aware of it or not. And that doesn’t stop you from liking it, does it? Don’t let a few haters prevent you from potentially finding your new favorite thing. Because there are a LOT of ppl out there who absolutely LOVE this show.

“I tried watching the first few episodes and I just... Couldn’t.” - Dude, I get it. Trust me. I did the same exact thing when I started watching. I watched the first couple of episodes and literally turned it off. But then I saw a few ppl posting about it here on Tumblr a while later and gave it a second shot on a whim. And BOY did it not disappoint when I got far enough in (and yes, that took a minute.) Mind you, this was back when Volume 3 was originally airing, so the drastic improvements in animation hadn’t happened yet. But I stuck with it anyways. And now look at me. But the show does take a while to really ramp up, so to speak. The beat doesn’t DROP until a bit later on in volume 3.

But, if you enjoy character growth and analysis, then you will most likely enjoy this show. The number of analyses on Tumblr and prolly Twitter as well are MANY. The main 4 characters are badass ladies learning how to fight and deal with life. Every character in the show is based on either a fairy tale, mythology, history, pop culture, etc. (sometimes they have multiple allusions to different degrees) and teasing out those details on top of everything else is quite fun if you enjoy searching for Easter eggs, significant imagery, foreshadowing, parallels, and so on. Interesting villains too. Not just the standard “Evil Witch because she’s evil with henchmen” thing. But fleshed out villains that have their Reasons™️. Like “Cinderella took so much abuse as a kid/teenager that she fucking snapped” type reasons. There is SO MUCH you can delve into with this show if you want to. Details as small as a whale statue in Gepetto’s office, or Belle reading a book with a candelabrum that looks like Lumiere, or characters wearing the colors of the person they love, or characters having eyes the color of their love’s aura (an extension of their soul.) SO MANY PLACES TO FIND THESE DETAILS. Including the lyrics to the music.

Which leads me to the music in this show is freaking AWESOME. And if you can’t appreciate that Casey Lee Williams has been singing in these soundtracks since she was like 13 or 14 (and listening to how she’s grown as a musician throughout it all to the point where she is now one of the music leads for the show) then I don’t know what to tell you. The music is all produced in house. And the lyrics reflect that. Each song is from the perspective of a RWBY character (or like team RWBY in general, depending on the song) and the lyrics give insights either about the characters or about stuff in the show (lore, foreshadowing, etc.) And they’re as fun to analyze as they are to jam out to.

The writing is FANTASTIC. Is it perfect? No. Of course not. They made mistakes along the way. Prolly will make some more. But every piece of media does to some extent. People aren’t perfect and so neither are their creations. But those imperfections don’t outweigh how amazing the story they’ve woven is. The writers of RWBY constantly subvert expectations in a BRILLIANT way. Not in a “wtf?? Where did that come from?” sort of way. But in a “OMG! Now that I go back and watch this again it makes SO MUCH SENSE” sort of way. And things that happen in early volumes actually COME BACK to affect things later. The show doesn’t just MOVE ON. The writers have been playing the long game this whole time. And rewatches will almost always show new details and foreshadowing you might have missed before.

Also, it GAY. And it’s THE major romance of the show. Not just a side story. And the voice actors are the Captains of the Ship! And it’s a beautifully written slow burn romance (amongst other romances also in the show) with yearning and pining for DAYS. I believe it was Monty who said, “Good romance is earned.” And boy are they earning it!

So, in short, FUCKING WATCH RWBY.

DAMMIT.

Fairy Tale Allusions in Yugioh 5Ds

So I was rewatching 5Ds and Akiza's duel against the knight dude got me thinking about the fairy tale allusions in her design and arc, and thinking about it more got me to realize that 5Ds actually has a lot of loose fairy tale allusions throughout it. So here are just a couple of the ones I noticed:

Akiza in general: Akiza's first duel of the series was already really heavy with the knight vs. witch symbolism. It also got me thinking about the "Princess, Witch, and Prince" theme from Revolutionary Girl Utena. A very basic rundown of what Utena says on it is that people will try to sort women into a box of good (Princess) or bad (Witch) based on how much they conform to the concept of what a girl should be like, a good Princess has to trade independence for protection from a Prince, any girl that doesn’t agree is a Witch. Problem is that no woman is ever just one of those things at a time, and Akiza definitely isn't. She is at first feared for her power, labelled the evil Black Rose Witch, and attempts to find comfort and safety in her "Prince" (Sayer). Only when she meets Yusei and the gang and finds acceptance from them and her parents do we see that she's actually a very kind girl. And even then, she doesn't go trading one Prince for another, she's never as reliant on Yusei as she was with Sayer and maintains her independence. Also just her deck in general carries the theme with fairy tale-like imagery (roses, knights, witches, fairies, and a dragon).

Akiza + Yusei: These two are basically Beauty and the Beast. I am a major faithshipping fan, but even if you take out the romantic aspects, it still fits. Yusei being Beauty and Akiza being the Beast for obvious reasons. The scene with Yusei waking Akiza in the hospital also gives major Sleeping Beauty vibes as well (this scene also owns my soul).

The rose imagery also still fits with both of them.

Yusei: He's Cinderella: he's a poor boy, goes to a ball that he wasn't supposed to go to (Neo Domino), has to leave at midnight (gets arrested), but leaves behind a "glass slipper" (the mark of the Crimson Dragon) that makes it so that the prince (Godwin) can track him down and give him another shot at freedom (not for altruistic purposes of course, but it still fits).

Jack and Carly: Scoopshipping are The Little Mermaid. The mermaid (Carly) falls in love with the prince (Jack), but for certain reasons, they cannot be together. Said mermaid makes a deal, by trading her soul, she gains legs (Dark Signer abilities + duel runner) which allows her a second chance to go after the prince. But the prince rejects her proposal (because she's undead and evil now), and the mermaid concedes. But being unable to hold up her end of the deal, she turns into sea foam and dies (turns into dust and dies).

Leo and Luna: Luna's deck already has a loose fairy forest type theme (and in the manga, has a Fairy Tale archetype). I want to say they're Hansel and Gretel. Has the same beats of two siblings getting lost in the woods (Luna with her spirit world adventure, Leo dueling Devack with "Closed Forest" up). But most of it comes from their duel with Devack, in which Hansel (Leo) stalls the witch (Devack) for as long as possible until Gretel (Luna) can kill the witch by pushing him into the oven (win the duel). You could also say that Luna's arc of freeing Ancient Fairy Dragon has elements of Rapunzel (saving the princess from the witch that locked her up).

Those are at least the ones I noticed. I doubt all of them were intentional but it's interesting when you make the connections. Let me know if there's any I missed because I'm not done with my rewatch yet and don't have anything for Crow. Feel like Team Satisfaction and Neo Domino City have Wizard of Oz parallels, but haven't got enough info to say how yet.

ROUND 1 MATCH 52

Chrom propaganda:

“Chrobin (Chrom x player character) is so many tropes in one oml. You have friends-to-lovers (Chrom and Robin are canonically best friends according to Nintendo), enemies-to-lovers (Robin is heir to the Grimleal cult, the enemy of the Halidom of Ylisse which Chrom is the prince, and later king, of), there's amnesia, time travel, official next-gen AUs, changed dialogue to lore important events in the game if you marry Chrom, and Nintendo keeps teasing us with the ship. Cheery prince who knows when to be serious, very strategically smart but very bad at communicating, a guy that can comfort you when you're down, make a fool of himself when you're not around, and he's just generally a very sweet guy. Also please consider the fact that you get to watch a cutscene of him dying in the prologue and despite the horrors he's just so supportive of the protagonist. Chrom doesn't care about where you came from or who you're related to, he cares for YOU. He gets KILLED by the protag and he reassures them that they did nothing wrong and pleads with them to get out, to a safe place. I lost my soul to Chrom, I physically can't play this game without romancing him.”

Fritz propaganda:

“While Lucette (The MC) at the start of her game is cold and unwilling to bond with others - Fritz is considered one of the 'only company [she] can tolerate nowadays', so he's the closest thing Lucette had to a friend. This also shows that even when Lucette can be at her 'worst', Fritz is still willing to see the best in someone (In a genuine way). He also never doubted her ability to beat her curse.

He's kind, loyal, sweet, and capable in a fight. A good ol' knight! He's also shown to be very attentive to those he cares about, being able to easily list the favourites of his charge from his experiences rather than being directly told. He's also got a massive sweet tooth.

He's compared to a dog a few times with his loyalty plus his overall 'good boy' vibes. He also almost never makes a romantic move/gesture w̶i̶l̶l̶i̶n̶g̶l̶y̶ first before getting together (general not-feeling-like-they're-good-enough-for-their-beloved type stuff), which is a nice change of pace from a lot of male romance options out there I feel.

In the sequel fan-disc, he can propose, and he says 'Would you do me the honour of allowing me to become your husband' instead of the 'usual' 'honour of becoming my wife' 🥺

There's also the whole Varg situation...if you want more oomph.

Sorry for then rant, here's another line from his proposal:

(part 2/9)

ship: austin butler x fem!reader

story summary: a summer fling when you were working on the set of the shannara chronicles turned your life upside down with a positive pregnancy test after austin returned to the united states. a pregnancy test, and a daughter that you never told him about. until the elvis biopic found him back in your orbit and forced you to face the music.

chapter summary: trying to process the whirlwind life has become since austin found out about cora is easier said than done, especially with a best friend throwing the word “fate” around.

authors note: yes i know the shannara chronicles was filmed in new zealand but this is my au and i can do what i want so we’re pretending it was filmed in queensland. covid also doesn’t exist in this story, because i said so, hence the filming schedule being one of my own making.

“Well I’ll take back what I said about not thinking you working on set would be a big deal.” Leah said, giving you an apologetic smile. Your mom took Cora for the night to give you some space to decompress from everything, or in other words- drink on Leah’s couch marathoning Parks & Rec.

“Yeah, understatement of the year.” You said, peeling at the label on your bottle. “He seemed pretty pissed, and I guess I can’t fault him for that. But when we were talking about Cora and not me he kinda mellowed out.”

You hadn’t actually seen Austin since he left your house the night before, the timing of Baz giving everyone a long weekend off working out perfectly. But you’d sent him a text inviting him over to see Cora when he was free, figuring it couldn’t hurt to transition into some sort of amicable dynamic before you had to orbit around each other at work all day every day.

“My cousin had a baby without telling the father and when he found out he lost his shit, took her to court for almost full custody and everything. Austin doesn’t seem like that type though.” Leah continued, a little too casually for your liking. You didn’t know what you would do if Austin was that type.

“Small blessings.”

Leah nodded, lowering her voice with a look in her eyes that gave you an inkling of the direction the conversation was going in. “But hey, at least him and Vanessa ended things for good, one door closes and another opens.”

She wiggled her eyebrows at you then, and you scoffed.

“Did you not hear me saying he’s pissed at me? I don’t think getting back together is in the cards here.”

“Well not now,” She continued, bumping your shoulder “But you never know. You gotta admit him being back here, a job opening up for you like it did- it all seems orchestrated by fate, doesn’t it?”

You wouldn’t give your best friend the satisfaction of admitting that it had crossed your mind, briefly. So rolling your eyes, you leaned forward to turn up the volume on the TV and effectively cut her off before she could interrogate you any further.

Cora saw Austin pulling into your driveway before you did, squinting out the window and turning back to you.

“Your frien’s here again?”

Jumping down, she held onto your pant leg as you opened the door, eyeing him curiously.

“This is Austin baby,” You said and gently nudged her out from where she had started to hide behind you. He walked into the house, crouching down onto her level as he shed his sunglasses.

“And I heard you’re Cora, how’s your chin feeling?”

She looked at him quietly for a beat, rocking on her heels. “Mommy gave me a p’incess bandaid and it made it all better.”

“It did?” He said, feigning shock with raised eyebrows. “Do you think the bandaid has magic powers?”

Cora giggled, putting a finger to the Cinderella bandaid over her stitches with a serious nod.

“You know, I think Austin would love to build Legos with you if you asked him,” You said and Cora unpeeled from your side to step closer. Austin looked at her with an expectment smile, and you could see it in his face how much he adored her already, a pang of guilt surging through you.

“Can we play Legos? They’re in my closet, mommy hasta’ use a chair to get ‘em cause she’s small.”

Both you and Austin laughed at that, a welcome break in the tension- even if caused by your daughter calling you short.

“I think I might be able to grab ‘em sweetie, you wanna show me where they are?”

Cora ran off with Austin trailing behind her, and you waited until they rounded the corner to lean against the door and take a breath. The past few days felt weeks and seconds long all at once.

May 15th, 2020

The first visit went well, and did what you’d hoped it would in regards to erasing any awkwardness at work. But you were so busy with your own job that you barely saw Austin for longer than a few minutes anyways. The extent of your hushed conversations were Cora, and planning the pop-ins at your house that were becoming regular.

Almost every time he wasn’t at set until obscenely late he was pulling into your driveway. And with each visit he talked to you a little more- as opposed to the laser focus he’d had on Cora to begin with. You could sense that he was still hurt, but all you wanted was for your daughter now was to have parents that could get along with each other. Somewhat awkward small talk was better progress on that than nothing.

“I see him!” Cora said from where she was standing on the couch by the window, having been waiting there since you told her he was coming over an hour ago. She scrambled down to open the front door as soon as his car pulled to a stop, running outside without shoes on to greet him.

She still didn’t know who he really was, and you hadn’t figured how exactly you were going to tackle that, but Austin didn’t seem in a rush either- nor had he brought it up yet. Until then, Cora seemed more than content to make “mommy’s friend” her best friend, not that you could complain about how fast she’d taken to him.

“Austin!”

“Cora Jean!” He crooned as he swung open the car door, scooping her up as she got to him. Holding her on his hip, he reached into the backseat and came back out with two bundles of white flowers, handing one to Cora and carrying the other himself. You realized what he was doing before he got to the door, swallowing thickly.

“Hiya,” He said when he reached you, handing over the other flowers with a soft smile. You could see a faint tint in his cheeks, at least you thought you might’ve- not trying to stare at him for too long.

“Our flowers match mama!”

Cora looked between the two of you excitedly, one arm looped around Austin’s neck as you let them into the house with a quiet “Thank you.” towards him.

Looking down at the flowers, your mind wandered back to the first time he’d brought you flowers that 2015 summer. You’d been out sick for three days and he made the trip to the store and your apartment with them in spite of knowing he was being photographed. The two of you scrolled through the headlines about him buying flowers for a “mystery girl” together while laying in bed. And the gossip amusing then, when there were no real stakes.

You were distracted by Cora’s antics of the day, dragging both you and Austin into a tea party with her stuffed animals, and didn’t notice that there was a small card in your flowers until after he left for the day.

Sitting down at the kitchen table, you bit on your bottom lip as you opened it.

Y/N,

I’m still trying to process being kept in the dark and missing out on so much of our daughter’s life. But she’s a great kid and I want to do right by her by doing right by her mom. Dinner at mine the next time you’re kid free for the night?

You hadn’t planned on going to the welcome party the producers were throwing together for the cast and crew, not when you didn’t exactly know anyone enough to drink an exuberant amount around them. But a text from another girl on the lighting team asking if you were going convinced you. Which was all good and fine, until she ditched you twenty minutes in to attach herself to a male member of the crew.

You were standing against the wall contemplating leaving, just having finished your drink, when someone’s voice coming towards you pulled your attention.

“Hey! It said, and you didn’t realize who it belonged to in the dark of the club until he got a little closer.” “I don’t think we’ve met, I’m Austin,”

You recognized him then, grown out blonde hair pulled back into a man-bun. Though you thought he pulled it off, that and the halfway undone button up shirt he had on. He was just as cute as he was in the pictures you’d seen, to the extent that you were surprised he was talking to you over some of the other girls orbiting around unoccupied.

“I think it’d be bad if I didn’t know your name when you’re the star of the show,” You quipped back and he grinned,

“You got a name yourself?”

“It’s Y/N, I’m on the light crew.” You said over the music and he gave a little nod as he sipped the drink he was holding. “Pretty name for a pretty girl.”

Well, you hadn’t been expecting that.

He glanced at the party, looking back to you with a raised eyebrow. “You wanna dance?”

At first you thought you heard him wrong, but he reached out a hand and you took it, letting him pull you out onto the dance floor. The two of you fell into a natural rhythm, and when he ducked his head down to kiss you let him do that too, snaking a hand up the side of his neck and as he pulled you closer to him by the hips.

And in the morning when you woke up to the rise and fall of his shirtless chest next to you your breath caught in your throat. The events of the night before came back to you in pieces, and still didn’t feel quite real. He could’ve pulled anyone at the party and pursued you. Some girl from the lighting team.

Not that you were interested in holding him back.

WIP Wednesday

Thank you @tinyarmedtrex for the tag. My current fic is sfw so I had to go with WIP Wednesday and not Thirsty Thursday (a truely excellent notion).

This is from my current Wesper/Outdoorsy Cinderella type remix of @stormkpr 's fic.

OBVIOUSLY Wylan is Cinderella.

There are step mothers and half-brothers and Rapunzel towers and Sleeping Beauty forests and Little Red Riding Hood things and all that going on but only one evil Duke (JVE).

And genuinely, I only realised after writing the below that I must have been subconsciously influenced by this picture.

"The steps to the lower part of the grounds were easy to find. Jesper simply headed to where the view of the formal gardens dropped away, and a mismatched patchwork of green spread out before him. Jesper smiled. He much preferred a messy garden. He jogged down the steps and then, with a dangerous lurch that made his stomach drop, Jesper quickly moderated his speed. There were rich mosses creeping in from the edges of the stone flags. They crushed underfoot and added far too much glide to his step. The gardens, it seemed, thrived in abundance in the corners where the Duke left well enough alone. One wrong step and Jesper would be sent bouldering down the slope and end up flat on his back at Lord Wylan's feet. And Jesper felt a certain need to impress Lord Wylan. So upon reaching what he was sure was the little wilderness Lord Reuben had described Jesper righted his cap, pulled the points of his doublet straight, exchanged a loud lungful of clean mountain air and strode onwards.

And he found no one.

The place was deserted. Jesper peered down the path running between two overgrown beds, then back towards the steps he'd just come from. Then he swung his head around to make certain he was in the right place. There were red roses spilling over the broken-down wall to the left of him, and in this little patch of garden there were ferns and willows and a carpet of blue flowers bursting out onto the path. It could definitely be considered wild. It must be the place. Jesper must have missed him. It was only as he was standing alone, and the day-long thrill that had been running through him fizzled away, that Jesper realized just how much he had hoped to see Lord Wylan. But there was always tomorrow! Jesper expired a sigh, scratched across the nape of his neck and had twisted back towards the castle when then, amidst the soft sounds of the evening he heard a loud 'snap'.

Jesper whipped his head towards the sound, then gasped instantly and recoiled in shock. Lord Wylan was crouching in a bush and pretending to be a wall.

"Good evening," said Lord Wylan, after a beat of silence in which he did not blink his impossibly wide eyes closed once. He rose up slowly and spoke with more dignity than Jesper would have managed if he'd been caught in a flower bed, barefoot, and ankle deep in dirt. He did however look like he was shaking. Was he frightened?

Jesper hadn't quite figured out what he would say to Lord Wylan upon meeting him a second time. But the sight of Lord Wylan casually extracting himself from a gorse hedge made Jesper's mouth hang open and all thoughts of delicacy fall out of his head.

"What are you doing?!," exclaimed Jesper eventually, after watching Lord Wylan step sideways and pick bits of twig and yolk-yellow blossoms out of his hair. "Were you hiding from me? Did you see me coming?"

Lord Wylan shook his head, but his denial was unconvincing.

"No. I did not see you," said Lord Wylan, his eyes straying and fixing themselves on Jesper's rather fabulous, but admittedly, very conspicuous hat. "I was not hiding." "

Is it possible for you to do Kai and Dabi thoughts on a reader that is so heavily stereotypically French that it is scary? Like you can sense they are French from a mile away 😭😰😧😧😰😰

I'm sorry if I got your ask wrong honey because I really didn't understand so much of it, pls let me know if I messed it up.

Sorry to break it to ya but this ass will pretty much tease the heck out of you.

You know that recent meme of the woman speaking croissant and there is someone there saying ti again in a total mocking accent? Yeah... you got it. That's him.

Sometimes might even ask out of his bratjness if you até any snails before he kisses you.

Again. He is an ass.

But only he could do that.

Because if he ever catches someone making fun of your accent, appearance or wtv the fuck is stereotype he is gonna burn/kill/ beat the person up.

Seriously, he almost incinerated Twice and Spinner for mimicking a French accent to greet you after a mission.

Touya might tease you a lot but in the end he is a suckered for French type of movies so he takes pride on you.

The new label “Pick Me Girl” and the return of Y2K fashion made me realize something. If you were a teen in the 2000’s, no matter what kind of girl you were, you were a pick me girl.

But! It wasn’t your fault. During your most developmental sponge like years they drowned you in Pick Me Propaganda.

Cinderella Story and how she’s different because she eats burgers instead of salad and worked hard.

10 Things I Hate About You where Kat still tried too hard and wasn’t herself, she was so I to the idea that you have to be what others want you to be that she consciously chose to be the exact opposite instead of doing what she liked because she liked it.

Mean Girls where you’re different if you’re secure and confident in your own body and not an insecure catty girl.

What a Girl Wants where your cultural difference makes you better and also walking on the beach and having a steady hand with nail polish is superior to getting a pedicure.

And how many of them depicted a nerdy “ugly” girl taking off her glasses, practicing basic hygiene, adding some lip gloss and oh now her crush can see she exists and falls in love with her. Or girls are rivals over some guy who isn’t even worth it.

So, no matter if you were preppy or punk, you were putting in the same amount of effort to not be something else, which is where the return of Y2K fashion comes into play.

Whatever you were trying so hard not to be in the 2000’s or your teens in general, do it now. I bet there was something you secretly wanted from the other side and wouldn’t indulge in because you had your superiority to uphold.

I Wanna see a retired grunge skater girl in a juicy tracksuit with oversized purse and sunglasses. I wanna see a former Paris Hilton minion learn to skateboard in some unnecessarily puffy skate shoes and a neck tie over their tank top.

Also anyone who was too poor or repressed by their strict parents to finally get the things you most wanted at that age but never had.

Now we can retrospectively look back and pick and choose the good stuff from that era, like my ass crack is way too long now for low rise jeans, I’ll never wear them below my hip bones ever again, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is we need to take this opportunity to heal our Y2K selves, have a redo, “I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger” whole thing. So many of us have shed our pick me girl ways and whole heartedly embraced Women Supporting Women, so let’s redo the amazing fashion time that was the 2000’s with that mentality.

Ever since i was a child i always felt so much guilt for being so withdrawn and apathetic and lethargic and passive in my life. But its just like ever since i can remember ive always been so jaded and tired. I remember being a kid and consuming Matilda and cinderella type stories and feeling bad. I was talking like a piece of shit burnout in an NA meeting when i was in 3rd grade!!!!! And i just always felt so guilty. Why couldnt i be beautiful and selfless and suffer in a way where i get to be the martyr. Im a piece of shit. I went thru bad things in life but that doesnt make me a good person.

U know in school how theyre always showing you motivational videos and giving you speeches like this kid has no arms and legs and lives in chernobyl and his parents beat him with frozen fish and hes harry potter but he studies for 10 hours every day and has good grades so you have no excuses!!!!!

Mini-Review: My Happy Marriage

Miyo's abusive family deems her worthless without a magical gift, and her betrothal to an infamously cold man has everyone—including herself—expecting that she'll be thrown out into the streets. With no home to return to, Miyo resigns herself to her fate—and soon finds that her pale and handsome husband-to-be is anything but the monster she expected. As they slowly open their hearts to each other, both realize the other may be their chance at finding true love and happiness.

I was super excited when I heard earlier this year that My Happy Marriage was getting an anime, because I had coincidentally picked up the first volumes of the manga on a whim from the library and was immediate hooked. First, the manga covers that caught my eye are gorgeous, and while obviously things change in adaptation, this is still a very pretty anime.

It's set in an alternate Taisho era (circa 1912-1926; I'm guessing this takes place sometime in the second half of the era, considering we see some flapper fashion) where magic exists. Miyo is enduring a Cinderella-esque nightmare that's lasted a lifetime: despite both parents coming from strong magical family lines, she's powerless. Her mother died when she was young; her father immediately remarried his old flame, who takes delight in beating Miyo down, metaphorically and literally.

Normally in a Cinderella-type story, the father is dead, gone, or oblivious, but here her father is absolutely complicit in the physical and emotional abuse hurled at Miyo. Her mother's belongings are stolen, she's kept malnourished and inadequately-clothed. To her father she's nothing more than a tool to marry off, and abuse is a great way to make sure she doesn't have the energy to try doing literally anything other than what she's told. To her stepmother and half-sister, she's an object of ridicule for her lack of powers, and a target for the crime of being born from a political marriage rather than the love match that they're related to.

Even when told she's now engaged to and going to live with an infamously-cold man who has driven off multiple fiancees already, Miyo just accepts the situation, because what else can she do? She fully expects to be thrown out at some point, and just hopes that she can manage to put that day off as long as possible by being as invisible and inoffensive as possible.

Kiyoka, the man, for his part is a little prickly, but mostly annoyed at having to deal with a string of upper-class socialites, and rapidly comes around when it's clear that Miyo isn't that.

In fact, Kiyoka realizes what's going on, and also recognizes his feelings, faster than she does--a lifetime of abuse isn't easily healed by a few weeks of respite, and Miyo is essentially waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time. She's survived abuse, but if she lets herself actually want things, and enjoy her life, then it will feel so much worse when it inevitably gets ripped away like every other nice thing she's ever had.

It's easy, as the viewer, to get a bit frustrated with Miyo sometimes because she won't say when she really wants something, but that's the point. This isn't just the story of a young woman escaping her abusive family for someone who values her, it's also about her having to come to terms with that fact that she has value, and that she's allowed to want things.

Overall, this was a great series, and I'm hopeful it'll get another season at some point. The original light novels, and the manga, are still ongoing (I can recommend the manga; haven't tried the novels) so there's more story. And it's ripe for more: the Cinderella story is the beginning, but the magic of the world and Kiyoka's role in what's essentially an anti-demon military unit of all supernaturally-gifted soldiers gets a good amount of screentime and has its own tantalizing mysteries (and exciting action sequences).

Honestly, the only thing I disliked about the series was this scene near the end when Kiyoka and Miyo are attending an event wearing western-style clothing...those aren't ~1920s clothes, right? I'm not crazy? What Miyo is wearing doesn't matter (I'm still dubious about it but far less so), but the background women... are those gowns with bustles like it's ~1884? Why are there Victorian ballgowns??? This scene lasts for less than 3 minutes in a single episode, it doesn't matter, but I can't stop thinking about it.

Verdict

English dub? Yes!

Visuals: Very pretty. It's a pleasure to watch!

Worth watching? Absolutely. The Cinderella story aspect is great if you like those types of stories, but that's not the only thing going on. The magic here, and politics surrounding it, are intriguing and I can't wait to dive in deeper, whether than manga or anime. Plus, who doesn't like a cool character who can set things on fire? I LOVE a cool character who can set things on fire.

Hi, I was reading your Haudrey and Uma one shot and I was thinking if you would do a one shot where Anxelin was nervous about entering a choir at School and Shang Jr was helping to gain confidence by playing his keyboard and started singing. Anxelin was in awe when she heard her male best friend sang, he sounded like an angel. So Anxelin gather courage and sang along with Jr by strumming her guitar. When Anxelin join up for the choir, she sang her mother's song(when will my life begin) and the judges were blown away. When Anxelin came back she told Jr about and excitedly jumped in his arms and hugged him. Then she realized it was her best friend she was hugging. She awkwardly unwrapped herself from Shang's embrace and the both of them laughed.

So this took me an eternity to answer, but here you go! I hope you like it, and that everyone else enjoys too!

...As always, I took some creative liberties, but it mostly matches. Just not exactly.

Anxelin

„And the auditions are tomorrow, it’s barely enough time to practise, I mean I know the song of course I do it’s my mom’s song, but it’s so little time and I’m nervous and school choir probably isn’t for me anyway–“ Anxelin paused her rambing, mostly just to take a breath, and moved her short hair from her eyes. She just cut it and dyed it recently, and it. Kept. Falling. Down.

It was driving her up the hall, really.

And!

What’s worse, Shang Jr, her best friend was laughing. Laughing, would you believe it?!

„Hey!“ she protested that treatment.

„Chill, Anx,“ he told her, raising his hands in mock surrender, „You’ve got it, I’m sure. If you want to join the school choir, you get in. No debate on that one.“

Anxelin breathed in, to start arguing, but she barely got beyond agitated „But–“ when Junior cut her off again.

„No buts!“ he told her, „ “but” isn’t how my mom won the war, or how yours got out of the tower.“

Oh, how Anxelin hated this, hated being compared to her mother’s shining example all the time.

And he knew it, too!

She glared at him.

Which had absolutely no effect, dammit.

„Look, I’m just saying, it’s gonna be fine.“

More glaring, this was not even worthy of an answer.

A pillow flew her way now, and she threw it back at his head. He caught it easily, of course, and laughed. She couldn’t help but laugh too.

„Hey, I’ve got a keyboard over there,“ he said, pointing at the instrument carelessly, „Wanna practice? Might take the anxiety away a bit.“

Anxelin considered this for bit: As much as she hated to admit this, he was probably right. Besides, it beats just sitting around and overthinking.

„Fine, yeah,“ she allowed, „You know the accords?“

Shang was good, she knew, but „When will my life begin“ wasn’t exactly his type of music.

„Obviously, there is not a song in this world or other that I do not know by heart,“ he boasted, before breaking into a laugh.

„Loudmouth,“ she complained.

„I’m googling it now.“

And really, in a moment, the first tones of the song rang through the room. Anxelin let the opening notes pass and then started singing along, trying to channel her mom through her voice, or, well, at least her joy. Her mom was the most joyful person Anxelin knew, one of the two people who could sing praise about doing laundry and moping, the other being Cinderella, of course.

Anxelin sings, lost in the music, and almost doesn’t notice when another voice joins her.

Shang Junior.

He has a voice from <i>heaven</i>.

Her jaw almost drops as she stops singing, listening to her friend instead, but that doesn’t last long. He notices her silence, and lets the song fade into nothing.

„What?“ he asks.

„You sing so well!“ she can barely contain her excitement and awe, „Why didn’t you tell me? You should join the choir!“

He shrugs.

„I don’t sing that well, really, and I enjoy mixing music more. You know I’m a DJ.“

She knows that, of course. But still, her face falls as she sucks at the inside of her cheek. „Hmm,“ she manages to murmur noncommittally.

Shang plays a single dissonant note on the keyboard.

„Stop it, sunshine,“ he tells her, and she makes a face at that, „I don’t want to be in the choir, but you do, and you totally got this. You’ve got an amazing voice, and you know the song.“

„Yeah but–“

„No but, Anxelin. You go to the auditions tomorrow and blow them away, hear me?“

Well, Anxelin isn’t too sure about that; she tells him he should go with her, to make up for showing off just now.

He laughs at her, gets another pillow in his face, and then promises.

They even go over the song another few times before Anxelin has to leave for her own room, and by that time, she’s feeling reasonably sure of herself.

Unfortunately, that changes before the auditions roll around, and her anxiety is getting better of her again. She’d rather stay holed up in her room forever than–

„Anxelin!“ Pounding at the door cuts off her spiral, „Open up!“

„Go away!“ she yells at her best friend.

„If you don’t open in half a minute, I’m breaking the door, and you know I can do that!“

She reluctantly opens the door, already making a face at Junior.

But since he’s here, well, she lets him drag her out, more or less, only hissing death threats and curses for about a minute, which is her personal record.

But now they’re in front of the door, and Anxelin stops.

„I’m doing this,“ she tells herself, trying to calm the bundle of nerves in her stomach, „I’ve got this.“

„Absolutely, girl, go get them.“

She walks through the door, and when she turns around, Shang flashes her a quick thumbs-up and a smile.

As she waits for her turn, she does a few breathing exercises her dad taught her, and before she can knows, she is standing in front of the judges, and the opening notes are playing.

Last deep breath–

And then she is singing.

She lets the melody carry her away, the melody and the memory of her mom’s smile and hugs and the stories she told. With that on her mind, Anxelin stands up a little straighter, and closes her eyes for a moment.

A shiver runs down her spine as the song grows into an anxious staccato and she remembers the eyes of Mother Gothel, staring at her from the portrait mom painted–

She shakes that away, her short black hair flying around her face. Her hair, yes, she’s not her mother, she is Anxelin, and she’s auditioning for the school choir.

The song is just about ending, and Anxelin looks at the judges as she finishes. The last notes echo for a bit, the room frozen in silence, before the jury breaks up into an applause and blinding smiles.

„Congratulation, Anxelin Fitzherbert,“ one of them tells her, „You’re officially in the school choir of Auradon Prep. Practice is every Wednesday and Friday, from six o’clock.“

Anxelin barely hears anything beyond the first word, and she can barely contain her excitement. She got in!

She did it!

„We’re looking forward at you,“ tells her another one of the judges, and she barely manages to nod along and not jump in the place from excitement. She flaps her hands just a little, and practically runs out of the room as soon as she can.

She falls around Shang’s neck; „I did it!“ she cries out, „I’m in the choir!“

„I know, I heard you, you were awesome!“ Shang matches her excitement and admirably doesn’t flinch away even though she just more or less screamed directly into his ears, and just now Anxelin realises how tightly she is clinging to her best friend.

„Sorry!“ she giggles nervously, letting go of him and stepping away from him.

„Don’t be!“ he laughs too, and then they’re laughing together, the last of her nerves flooding away.

She did it!

And he helped her and supported her so much –

„Thanks!“ she manages to thank him in between the fits of giggles.

help please I've discovered the gif of Syuri kissing Utami Hayashishita, and then Utami's post-match reaction, can you please tell me if there was followup, what else happened?!

Oh my goodness anon CAN I EVER (sorry I waited days to respond to this I've been having A Time)

Okay so immediately after the kiss they didn't have any matches against each other for a few weeks until their singles match in the Cinderella Tournament that year. Utami spends this time pining and wondering if Syuri really likes her and Syuri keeps teasing her on Twitter. Syuri eliminated Utami and even though it was just Over The Top Rope it ended up being enough to earn a title match given that Utami also wanted to fight her.

Their first title match was really good, real unstoppable force vs immovable object type stuff. They fight to a 30-minute draw just as Syuri seems to be getting the advantage, lay on the mat for 2 minutes and say they both want to keep fighting and are granted an extension. That 2 minutes was enough for Utami to get her wind back and negate the advantage Syuri had had, and they fight 13 more minutes to a double knockout.

Utami (and her tag partner and perennially friend-zoned bestie Saya Kamitani) challenge Syuri (and her tag partner at the time and perennially friend-zoned worstie Giulia) for their tag belts bc they can't fucking keep away from each other or leave each other alone at this point and it's in the leadup to that match that they have the unbelievably charged staredown you've hopefully seen gifs of that was somehow even more homoerotic than when they actually kissed.

I don't remember specifically what happened in the tag belt match but it's not super important, Syuri & Giulia retained.

They had another match in the 5 Star GP that year and they were both desperate to finally beat the other going into it, fully aware given the year they were having 20 minutes probably wouldn't be long enough, and they were right, fighting to a vicious draw where they both clearly had more left in the tank.

Syuri won 2021's 5 Star GP and with that earned another title shot against Utami. She asked to get her title match not at the next big show, as had been customary in previous years, but at their huge Ryogoku Kokugikan show at the end of the year, Dream Queendom, so she could be as prepared for Utami as possible and they could fight on the biggest stage possible, as she felt they deserved. Because she defers her title shot she has to defend the right to challenge a few times in the interim, but she's on a mission, unwavering and seemingly obsessed with the red belt, and finally taking it from Utami. They request their title match be no time-limit this time for obvious reasons.

They fight for only 33 minutes, the lack of a break at half an hour proving to be what Syuri needed, this time pressing her late game advantage and able to capitalize where she ran out of time before. Syuri is finally the red belt champion, and Utami is crushed.

That chapter of their story pretty much came to a close at that point, but every interaction between them was still like, significant. Every time they face each other it was incredibly obvious how important they are to each other's growth. Utami spends much of 2022 rebuilding herself after losing the belt, sometimes trying to take it easy and recharge and sometimes trying to get her groove back, trying to learn how to be the new leader of Queen's Quest. She also cuts her hair god fuckin bless

They face each other in the 5 Star again, and Syuri is faltering this year. Seemingly every person in her block understandably sees her as a huge target, Utami included. Between the pressures of being in the tournament as champion and leading her new unit, God's Eye, Syuri can't balance everything and prepare for everyone and she's overwhelmed. Utami, on the other hand, comes in immensely prepared for Syuri this time, beating her in just under 15 minutes. (The 5 Star thankfully has a shorter time limit again now than it did in 2021.)

After the 5 Star Syuri has one other defence to get through first, and then accepts Utami's challenge, to make up for her loss in the tournament. To Syuri, she wants to purge the blemish from her record as champion and prove the red belt is unqestionably hers, but she's a little excited to face Utami again. Utami tries to hide it but she's a little desperate to turn back the clock, thinking if she can just go back to who she was a year ago she can handle her current struggles.

The lead up to that match is, god, fucking -

I hate them.

Anyway Syuri successfully defends in another really, really good match. Utami tries desperately to turn back time, go back to the way she fought, the person she was, a year ago. But Syuri's already beaten that person. She peels the layers off of her and fights her with raw emotion, dragging the same out of Utami until she's forced to fight as she is now, scared and uncertain and angry and passionate. Syuri makes her stare herself in the face and then beats her again. But after, she tells Utami she is her greatest rival, and she wants to do this over and over again for as long as they both can. Utami cries.

And as of now, that's where things stand between them, though no stories in wrestling are ever truly finished. They don't currently have reason to go after each other, though they'll never be completely unentangled from each other at this point. They're both leading their units in the upcoming Triangle Derby, which starts in January, and they are in opposite blocks, which means they will face each other. I'd guess the question this time will be whether they face each other on equal footing as two unit leaders who are expected to head their team in the tournament, or if they won't be able to help but have things get personal again. They face each other on the very first show of the tournament, January 3rd.

Listen, last year I did two hours and twenty-eight minutes and when I hit two hours and fourteen minutes this year I was like "whatever, print it." Also I liked how they hung together and some life stuff kind of meant that what I needed was a very loopable couple hours, not a curated several hours. I think every time I hear a Donavan song I go "this is my favourite" but it's more like "this is my favourite right now." More love and relationship type songs because you can't get away from that in music tbh, but also it's a fun thing to theme around.

'Heartbeat' by Riggs is from Heavy Metal (1981), well not *from* the movie, but was in the movie, which is so specifically of its genre and era and also so specifically for me, who ended up with a sizable Loc-Nar tattoo. I think you can gauge pretty quick if a deeply '80s metal animated movie is for you and it conveniently is available on Archive.

It was a wet month here, hence all the rain songs, I hate linking to Insta, but latimes.404 had a nice little rundown of stats. The 1933 record mentioned is why we have such monster flood abatement where we live. I can’t remember which Raymond Chandler story it is but one scene takes place in a house that had been swept down a hill by a community ruining flood and THATS the record mentioned in the video. That’s why every four way stop is crossed with gutters that bottom out your car.

Bump of Chicken! 'Sleep Walking Orchestra' slaps. I am a Delicious In Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi fan (vol 13 and 14 on preorder, bb!), it's as specific as Heavy Metal, so I guess decide if you want a cooking manga/anime that is also very intense, and monster-nerdy. (and also kind of horny). Anyway, the official video is a more all-ages delight.

This free visual novel was an absolute joy to play, with very funny&witty dialogue. Each character felt alive with their varied vocabularies and various texting styles. I chose to romance Orlam and the whole ride was fun, romantic and in the end quite sweet. It's not very difficult, I beat it on my first try. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a short funny romance that relies on wit, with zero needless fanservice.

THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF PRINCE IN CINDERELLA ADAPTATIONS

So... like the leading lady he falls in love with, the Prince character in Cinderella stories and its billions of adaptations will vary personality wise depending of what different time periods, regional cultures and writers consider desirable and heroic traits in a male character.

Each individual portrayal is unique, but there are some patterns that ocasionally repeat in the portrayals of this character. These paterns can be subdivided into groups of character types. Today i camed up with six named character patterns that are common in portrayals of Cinderella's Prince.

The Warrior Hero

His main characteristics are his courage, his passion and his determination. For him, finding his beloved Cinderella to rescue her from the house where she is abused, and take sayed abusers to justice, is a rescue mission in wich he must be victorious. To the point where his parents and counsellours may need to calm him down, because they are not in an actual war. His temperament is enough to show him as a warrior figure, but riding a horse or holding a sword in some moments doesn't hurt (bonus points if indeed he tells about once fighting and killing wizards and dragons). Of this type of Prince, Don Ramiro from the opera La Cenerentola is the quintessential representative. Other examples include Prince Christopher in the 1965 TV production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, and Prince Felipe in the HBO cartoon anthology series Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child.

The Romeo

This is a more boyish looking and sensitive type of Prince. While he may have jolly playfull moments, his main characteristic is that he is a melancholic romantic. He is the part that is really longing to find his soulmate. When he finally finds that soulmate in Cinderella and apparently looses her at midnight, he shouls desperation. He pines for this woman. He must find her. His hearth cannot beat without Cinderella's hearth, without her at his side, life is not worthy. A great example of this type of Prince is the encarnation presented in the 1947 movie Zolushka. Other examples include Prince Charmant (a mezzo-soprano role) in the opera Cendrillon, and Prince Tinhorão in Maria Clara Machado's children's play A Gata Borralheira (The Ash Cat).

The Slacker

This type is the quintessential hedonist. His only concern is to go out with his friends for a hunt and drinking party, pulling some pranks along the road, while running away from his masters who try to make him study politics so he can take responsability as a ruler in the future. Either indeed he becomes more inteligent and a responsable leader, or he remains an unconcerned slacker forever. He apeals romantically to his Cinderella because he is a companion of fun and games who will make her laugh after a lifetime of suffering. And you can imagine that he will likely let her hold the rulling duty. The biggest representative of this type of Prince is probably the portrayal in the 1973 movie Three Wishes for Cinderella. Other examples are Prince Charles in the anime series Cinderella Monogatari and Prince Victor in the anthology series Sechs Auf Einen Streich.

The Lovable Goof

Not always the most bright person, can be a bit bumbling when finding hobbies or stutter when talking to people. But what he lacks in intelect, he has in kindness and compassion. He cares for Cinderella's feelings and respects her as a human being, and that is why he earns her hearth. Prince Arthur Charming from Tales of Muppetland: Hey Cinderella and Prince Henry from Faerie Tale Theatre are the biggest representatives of this type of Prince.

The Suave Gentleman

May or may not be a bit older. This type of Prince is essentially a cool, calm, elegant and sophisticated intelectual. Even if he tries to hide his privileged social ranking and upbringing, his manners, way of talking and tastes give away that he had access to an aristocratic power and education. The fact that he keeps calm and polite no matter the situation may at first cause Cinderella to find him a weird fellow, but slowly he gains her thrust, and boosts her confidence, showing her the beauty and worth that she didn't saw in herself before. Prince Charles from the movie The Glass Slipper is the quintessential representative of this type of Prince. Prince Christopher in the 1997 TV production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella has a similar elegance in style, but is closer in age to his Cinderella and so more of an equal to her in feeling insecure about love.

The Rebelious Bird in a Cage

This type of Prince has a narrative arc usually reserved to Princesses: trying to rebel against his parents that want to impose an arranged marriage onto him, because he only wants to marry someone he chooses out of mutual true love, not because of status or gaining of political power. There may be an adversity that forces this Prince into the altar with the arranged bride, but with the help of the Fairy Godmother and his own discovered feistness, he reunites with his poor and ragged Cinderella to live happily ever after togheter after all the troubles. Prince Edward of the movie The Slipper and the Rose is the precursor of this type. Other examples include Prince Henry in the movie Ever After and Prince Robert in the 2021 film adaptation.
