A Reflection of Starlight Review

(TW: brief mentions of COVID, cancer, and suicide) (spoilers for Les Mis but no spoilers for AROS)

Please indulge me as I tell a bit of a personal story.

I took French all throughout high school and also participated in French club. I was also really into musical theatre (and I still am) so I was interested in the musical Les Misérables. I saw it live once and it was incredible. Sometime during my sophomore year I tried to read the original Brick but didn’t get very far, it’s just kinda not my thing I guess. But the characters were so charming and endearing to me and I was primarily moved by the stories of Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert. I was moved by how their characters and stories mirror each other and how they’re so alike but their differences drove them to very different places. During my senior year of high school we watched the 2012 Les Mis film in French club one day. At the end when Javert kills himself, almost everyone in the room cheered, but I did not. While Javert did many bad things, had a very narrow worldview, and made things so much harder for our protagonist, I still felt pity for him. I felt pity that he lived by this one doctrine all his life because he kind of had no other choice and when faced with the idea that he may be wrong, he was so distressed and had no one to turn to, so he took his own life.

Earlier that year, I started reading a fanfiction called A Reflection of Starlight by AutumnGracy, and I was quickly sucked in. For those unaware, it is a continuation of the Les Mis book that starts with one big difference: Jean Valjean saves Javert from drowning after he throws himself into the Seine. From there, the two grow closer and Javert learns to live with the fact that the law isn’t infallible with the help of Jean Valjean.

I started reading this fanfic in the spring of 2019 and I didn’t finish it until today, January 15th, 2024. Over four years. To my credit, it is a HUGE work, spanning over 379,000 words; that’s longer than the entire Hunger Games trilogy, which is about 301,000 words in total. A lot has happened in my life since I started reading that slowed my progress. The COVID pandemic hit, I got diagnosed with cancer, beat cancer, started college, had a cancer relapse, beat the cancer relapse, and got a boyfriend all in the time that it took me to finish this thing. This is the longest text that I have ever read.

And there’s a good reason why I stuck with it: it’s absolutely amazing. While I didn’t read the original Brick, the wording and structure of the story seems very appropriate for the original time period and story. It’s extremely well-written and tells a compelling story all on its own that gives all of the main characters a resolution to their pasts and a hopeful and happy ending. It’s kinda plot-heavy, there’s a lot of original stories and plot lines taking place, but it is all engaging and wraps up really nicely.

The center-point of the story, however, is the growing relationship and eventual romance between Jean Valjean and Javert. From beginning to end you see how this beautiful relationship slowly develops and grows. And I mean SLOW. This is literally the slowest burn that I have ever read. But it’s worth it. Even before it’s explicitly romantic, there are lots of cute, endearing moments between the two that kept me hooked. They’re even asexual which makes my aspec heart so happy. This is probably the greatest fanfiction that I’ve ever read.

@autumngracy thank you so much for such a wonderful work. Your authors notes throughout were entertaining and made me feel like I was experiencing this story along with you. Your writing is phenomenal and I hope you know how great your skills are.

Look, I know America is absolutely fucked in a variety of ways, and I make plenty of jokes about it myself. But something rubs me the wrong way when Europeans laugh about our lack of healthcare.

Goooing to have to be a little more specific cause I mention like four separate things...like

Is there a club for getting all jobs to 90 (again?)? Think they call it No-Lifeing FFXIV Is there a club for procrastinating? I think they call it being an artist or a writer. Is there a club for avoiding getting a life partner in real life? ...I mean speaking from experience I think they refer to me as just a "Single (Passing) White Male" cause you know society like its cookie cutter molds. Is there a club for doing any of those other things while trying to keep my head down in the hellscape that is an American Election Year? I honestly don't know, it just seems like the sane thing to do.

i got emotional about gay marriage like everyone else but like why can't you just designate hospital visitation rights to whoever you want, like emergency contact? like why tf does it matter what the nature of your relationship is, if that's who you want there

but make no mistake. just because they would invite you for dinner, introduce you to their acquaintance they feel like you would get along with great, invite you to their get together of all these lovable weirdos or wouldn’t let you sleep outside in the freezing cold … doesn’t mean they feel like you get to know them like that. you might even notice the closer you get to them the more enclosed they become. if they feel like you are a friend of a friend .. off they go blabbering on about their dreams and ideas, feelings and impressions. but if you’re going to be in their day to day .. oh boy, they put their big kid shell on and you might noticed them waiting to see if they can invest in you. they will gladly take care of you or help you. they will love it if you open up emotionally to them. just with them opening up to you might take some time and be indirect. because once you’re in you’re in and taken care of. they might actually be mad if you take their caregiver spotlight. in that vain they might be the one turning into a huge baby

you may have noticed this resistance to one on one hang outs. and maybe they are the one person who is really picky with people they date (really nitpicky and critical if you will). they might be scrambling to look for buffer people to have on these one on one hangouts. they might indeed fear that you won’t be talking enough and they might reveal more about themselves than they are comfortable with. it’s not this desire to be mysterious, it’s out of fear of getting vulnerable and you leaving them. they know that people are unstable points in their lives and they are trying to protect themselves from getting attached. because once you are theirs you are THEIRS and you no longer have a say in that matter . if a taurus rising likes spending time with you one on one, just know that you are special. with most people they probably feel a little on edge, a little paranoid, they are censoring themselves. or silently listening collecting all the information on that other person. if their avoidant ass doesnt run for the hills when they feel attached to you, they will make it a point to understand you, you will occupy their mind to the point of not having to say anything for them to know. possibly years of restricted vulnerability will be unleashed on you in a way that is deeply transformative to them, and you know they hate change more than anything. they will grow to someone who is fit for merging your two souls into one. just so you know they are terrified of abandonment and they might get very possessive and obsessive if they feel you slipping from them and tighten their grip on you even if they have to metaphorically strangle you. and if you do indeed make them feel abandoned, you will have created a stubborn enemy for life. for they do hold grudges like it is their life purpose.

To the boy who doesn't know What That Is or Why That Matters

Lou Sullivan’s diaries aren’t that interesting to me for huge chunks of it because he talks about sex and desire quite a lot, and being asexual that’s not something I am interested in nor can relate to. But then he says something so plainly and simply about his existence as a gay trans man that I feel like I got the breath knocked out of me. We’re the same! This man - living, breathing, real man - felt the same as I do. He felt insecure and doubtful and convinced he was right and he wanted more than anything to be a gay man wholly and completely. And he was. He’s remembered for that. For his words and his desire and his refusal to back down. Trans history gets me every time for the simple reason that I love being reminded we always existed. We always were part of society just living our lives as ourselves.

I don't feel like arguing w strangers on the internet today so if you really feel that transandrophobia is a genuine axis of oppression and that misandry is just as real as misogyny go read whipping girl by julia serano. or block me. idc I'm not arguing this
