Book Review: Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen

If roses are red, and violets are blue, then grab yourself a copy of this dark prickly fantasy right now so it can enchant and madden you, too. What a magical read! What a wonderfully cursed, heart-stopping debut! I love fairy tales with sharp thorns and edges, always have. Just as I love stories that feature characters who are vindictive, selfish, prideful, ambitious, duplicitous, and cold enough to freeze hell with their attitude, so what enthralled me most about this book is that I was gifted all of that and more. Nothing was black and white in this universe. Nothing. Not only was there a curse that was purported to end in either salvation or damnation, but everything and everyone in the kingdom of Auveny dwelled, sometimes sunk, in shades of gray. Violet, for instance, the antiheroine, is a seer and a liar, and a compelling one at that. She's cold, acerbic, and unapologetic about it, caring more about acquiring the respect and power she wants than being liked. She's also cutthroat, conniving, and selfish. Her main goal is to preserve her position in the royal court by whatever means necessary--even if it means lying for the king. Even if it means going toe-to-toe with Cyrus, the resident Prince Charming and perpetual thorn in her side. Even if it means keeping her visions of war and bloodshed and disaster to herself. As a character, she's unreservedly flawed, no doubt about it, but while she does commit a few heinous mistakes, her heart is torn about it. She struggles. She wavers. She reevaluates. She, like so many of us, hits hard against a wall where hope, love, trust, and faith in other people becomes integral for her growth and survival but, if she's not careful, may also lead to her doom. Is she willing to sacrifice herself to save someone else? That is the question. (The answer? Well, it's still outstanding, if you want to know the truth.) Cyrus, too, her rival and potential love interest, is no less morally ambiguous. Sure, he may be able to doll out charm and charisma like it's second nature, with all the ladies of the kingdom swooning into puddles of tulle every time he smiles, but there's calculation behind his words. There's manipulation behind his actions. He puts on one perfect princely face for the world yet wears an entirely different one when he's behind closed castle doors. I enjoyed seeing his facade crinkle away, being privy to the burning hate and unquenchable attraction he felt toward Violet, as well as witnessing how he attempted to thwart his prophetic fate. Let's just say the man knows how to work a room! As a pairing, Violet and Cyrus definitely put the COMPLICATED into "it's complicated." They were enemies to lovers gold with their combustible unresolved tension, their bickering, their goading, their backstabbing, and their childhood "I saved your life" backstory, which worked in a two-fold fashion because neither one of them would be where they are today without the other. Cyrus wouldn't be next in line for the throne because he'd be dead. And Violet, despite her magic, despite her prophetic gifts, wouldn't be Seer because no one would've plucked her from obscurity. Did I love them as much as Jude and Cardan? No. Not quite. But they're close, mighty close! They have a precarious "will you kiss me or kill me" quality to their dynamic that dangles their potential romantic future on the edge. And given what happens toward the end..never has there been a finer line between love and hate! The fairy tale nods that are sprinkled throughout are also a delight. There's Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Tinkerbell (because of all the fairies), and even a dash of Maleficient. More than that, they're all implemented with twists, tangles, and turns that make them feel fresh. Novel. Unique. And of course, magical. So yeah, consider me enchanted. In fact, if the Evil Queen wants possession of my heart while I wait for the second book in this duology, then she can have it. No strings attached.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the next book in this series! It just got better and better! I saw one plot twist coming, but then I was so taken by surprise that the book completely made up for it.

I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't stop reading. It was such a smooth, easy-going read that went quickly.

I liked how real the characters were, especially in this day and age. There was excellent character development which was entertaining to read. It was an empowering experience reading this book.

I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Sonic the Hedgehog is an Egyptian Long-Eared Hedgehog. Sonic has major Electrokinesis and major Aerokinesis and major Cháokinesis. Sonic is an aromantic quoiromantic asexual aegosexual intersex pangender bordergender narkissigender genderspeed hedgehog with ADHD, BPD, and NPD who uses any pronouns, including storm/storms, ⛈️/⛈️s, thunder/thunders, 🌩️/🌩️s, gale/gales, 🌀/🌀s, bree/breeze, and 🍃/🍃s pronouns. Around the age of 12 - 13 Sonic gets tired of feeling unloved by both the foster homes they lived at and by the people who adopted them only to later throw them away so Sonic decides to run away in the hopes of finding someone who will genuinely care about them. While struggling to survive on their own the hedgehog starts to encounter Eggman and quickly becomes a thorn in his side. Also while searching for a home they encounter Tails, a DID system who is being abused by their family and bullied due to being Autistic. Sonic, sympathetic to their new friend's suffering, encourages them to run away with them to find somewhere better to live. While on their quest for a happy home the two become known for stopping Eggman's evil deeds resulting a couple named Darron Bolos Segaleh and Ilaiya Gotzone Nailah coming to adopting the two. The relationship starts of sweet but in reality Darron really only cares about using to two as mascots for his company and isn't above mistreating and abusing his children when they do something that makes his company loses money or negatively impacts their image. Being treated like a prince when succeeding and as worthless after every mistake leads to Sonic developing NPD. After growing up Sonic eventually goes on to live in a house with a number of their friends including Tails and Sonic is able to finally start recovering from everything that happened to them although they find recovery incredibly difficult. Sonic is a sweet person but is very emotional unstable which can lead to them make mistakes or hurting themself.

When you parted for University there were tears in your eyes, knowing it could be months before you saw each other again. While Chase continued to help his siblings and his new team, you were two states away studying and although you called almost three times a week it was never enough. Since you began dating, you and Chase were attached to the hip, doing everything together and it was a difficult adjustment. There were times when he was working in his lab alone and he would turn to say something to you, harsh reality hitting him when he remembered you weren't there.

It wasn't an easy decision to go out of state but Chase insisted when you planned to turn down the University of your dreams, not wanting to be a thorn in your side, preventing you from reaching your full potential. Although there were times when he hated not being selfish in that moment, just to have you beside him.

You were close with the Davenport siblings since they arrived at Mission Creek High, accepting their odd behaviour in stride and once you learned the truth about their bionics, it only made you closer. Regularly you kept in contact with Adam and Leo who were on the Island, and also Bree who kept you in the loop about her new team and their new missions. So when she told you that Chase seemed a little down lately you knew he needed a reason to pick himself up, and decided to surprise the siblings by driving across two states to the penthouse.

You looked around, eyebrows raising at the interior, although you didn't expect anything less extravagant from Donald. You placed your bag down on the sofa, turning when a voice spoke.

"Hello?" You found two boys who shared glances, wary of your presence. "Can I help you?

"Is Chase here?" You asked.

"Okay, this is weird." Kaz whispered poorly. "A pretty girl asking for Chase?"

"Who are you?" Oliver asked.

"Y/N." You held a hand out for him to shake. "Let me guess...you are Oliver."

He shook your hand. "How did you -"

"Bree and Chase told me about their new team." You looked at Kaz, holding out a hand. "So, you must be Kaz."

"Are you bionic?" Kaz asked, shaking your hand.

You shook your head. "No. Just plain old human."

"You are anything but plain." Bree entered with a grin, walking over to you while Skylar approached the two boys. She squealed excitedly as you hugged, rocking side to side. "I can't believe you're really here!"

You pulled away with a smile. "I thought it was time I paid a visit for a few days."

"He's down in the lab." Bree explained, giving you the directions. "Ah! He's going to be so excited!" She hugged you tightly and you laughed softly. "We are totally having a girls night."

"Deal."

You headed to the elevator and Oliver and Kaz turned to Bree when the doors closed. "Who is she?"

"Chase's girlfriend." Bree answered.

"Hold up." Kaz followed the speedster as she walked to sit on the sofa. "Chase has a girlfriend? Chase?"

Bree nodded. "Trust me I couldn't believe it either. They've been dating for three years now."

You looked around the lab, careful not to knock anything over. You smiled softly when you heard the music playing as you got closer to where Chase was working. It was a song you danced to on your first date and your heart fluttered at the memory.

"Need any help?" You spoke up. "I'm pretty good with Chemistry."

Chase froze in his chair and you bit your lip when he turned around, eyes widening when he saw you standing there. A grin formed on his lips as he shot out of his chair, nearly toppling you over as he hugged you tightly.

"Please tell me I'm not dreaming." He closed his eyes, burying his head in your neck as you returned his embrace.

"Not this time." You sent him a smile when he lifted his head, meeting his gaze. "Hey."

"Hey." He chuckled, placing a hand on your cheek, leaning down to kiss you gently.

Your reunion was cut short when the team entered in their suits.

"They're back." Oliver spoke up.

Chase looked down at you, hands on your arms as he reluctantly pulled away. You pecked his frowning lips, sending him a smile. "Go. I'll still be here when you get back."

Chase placed a chaste passionate kiss on your lips before following the team to the elevator. You sighed when the doors closed, looking around the lab with a small smile. It wouldn't hurt to look around.

Almost three hours later the team arrived and Chase was the first to enter, finding you sitting on the sofa, eating popcorn while watching a horror movie.

"Is that -" Kaz began.

"Death Punch 6? Yeah." You grinned, looking at Chase when he took the seat on your left. Bree left to the kitchen to make more popcorn. "Everything okay?" You asked while Skylar, Oliver and Kaz sat on the floor while the latter explained the movie to Skylar.

Chase placed his arm around your shoulders and kissed your cheek. "For once...everything is great." He smiled, and you returned it, placing a piece of popcorn in his mouth when he parted his lips.

Bree took the seat on your right. "Is this the part where his head falls off -" As if on cue the monsters head fell off his shoulders. "Nevermind."

You smiled at the brunette, looking up at Chase as you slouched in the chair, resting your head on his shoulder. His lips pressed a kiss to your head, and you smiled, closing your eyes briefly to savour the feeling of being back in his arms.

Chase looked down at you with a smile. After spending the last two hours listening to Kaz ask questions and make assumptions about your relationship, it was a relief to return to the penthouse to find you waiting for their return. On the surface you were an unlikely match. You were popular, though you never realized how popular you were, but everyone else knew you were at the top of the pedestail as everyone liked you for your kindness. While Chase was known as the brainiac, and his siblings were known for being oddballs. But your relationship stood the test of time and you knew that distance wasn't going to be the end either. And you couldn't wait until you finished your studies to come home, back where you belonged by his side.

This might be the absolute most niche post I’ve ever made, its 10 PM and I’m not spellchecking, but I saw a post that inspired this-

Lunar Chronicles and BM characters, what would happen?

Disclaimer, I haven’t read TLC in maybe three years so I could be off. I’ll try to give reasoning for my friendship pairs but a lot of them are just instinct.

But right out of the gate, Scarlet and Bree get along. Powerful and confident young women with strong maternal figures. Scar teaching Bree-Bree how to fly a ship? Bree showing Scarlet her Rootcraft?

In a similar vein, Wolf and Sel. They are absolutely best friends. In the way that… you know how guys are so close sometimes you can’t tell if it’s gay or not? That’s Wolf and Sel. I cannot explain why besides they are so similar and yet so different. They would vibe so hard.

Thorne and Sel. Specifically early-LB Sel. They’re so insufferable and full of themselves. And Sel would absolutely despise Thorne. I want that.

Jacin and Sel! Protecting the descendant of the king who you’re actually in love with is not a common experience. That would bring people together. And also Jacin in general is just a sweet person who’s been sort of repressed/boxed in by his situation, just like Sel.

I really want Cinder to match well with someone, but she feels like such a loner! I guess she and Bree would probably get along well, but I have zero justification for that.

Hey! I listened to the time traveler’s wife audiobook while walking on a treadmill to work out. I thought if it only because of it’s relation to non-sequential. hey bree!!

i used your Wall of Thorns spell a few months ago along with a guardian spell to ward my apartment for the winter. they’ve done me quite well so far. i came home to this today and instantly got a bad feeling about it.

seal exposed and my guardian Purrcilla is moved. pretty sure they were just bumped by my neighbors (i’m the middle floor), but i can’t shake this bad feeling i got about it. any advice?

Since it doesn't look like anything's been deliberately messed with or broken, I'd just clean up the area, check the seal, and put things back the way they were. You can also try to feel things out and see if the ward needs repair.

Think of the protection spell like a piece of fabric or a tangle of vines. Clear your head as best you can so you can focus on what you're doing and pass your hands around the frame of your door, or wherever you've anchored the spell. See if anything feels "thin," as if there's a spot that's threadbare or maybe where some of the brambles have fallen away. It's not a perfect method and may or may not work (this is VERY much Your Mileage May Vary), but it might help calm your nerves if things feel solid.

When in doubt, you can always cast a little patching spell, like a mini warding that covers and seals any cracks in the existing spell. That's what I usually do, kind of like darning a hole in the heel of your sock or spackling a crack in the wall.

Also, just on a practical note, keep an eye on things for a while. This looks like it's tucked into a corner by your door where it's not likely to be bumped by people passing by. (I could be wrong.) Even if it's not somebody messing with your spell, it might have been someone looking for a hidden key. So make sure you stay vigilant, lock your door, keep track of your keys, and take note of anyone loitering around your floor without an ostensible reason to be there.

💚reasons not to date:

his tsundere behavior. yes, tsundere characters can be cute in anime, games, etc, but when you actually meet someone like that.. sure, they can be cute, but you also go "CHILL WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN TO ME". this guy is so proud of those nicknames he came up with 😭😭 so yeah, if you don't want a boyfriend who will insult you and be rude to you at first, avery is not the best choice.

he doesn't know how to express his feelings. this is also a part of his tsundere behavior: avery really doesn't know how to express his emotions properly, so even if he's happy, he will say something like "ugh, whatever, i don't really care anyway". it's hard to understand what he's trying to say, if you're not a "tsundere expert" and if you and avery are not that close. avery really wants to say more and be more honest, but he's just so afraid of being judged..

💖 reasons to date:

very romantic. avery is a huge fan of romance novels, so he can be very affectionate and he has a lot of ideas for your dates, his gifts to you, etc. he's definitely the type to send you love letters (and they will smell like flowers), he always remembers what you like so that he can get it for you later and he really wants to slow dance with you (even if he's not that good at dancing)! he's also already imagining what your wedding will be like.

his shoujo manga love interest appeal. i know i said it a million times back when we came up with euvery, but avery really is your perfect "mysterious bad boy with a secret cute side"! if you want someone who will kabedon you when asking you something, say things like "you don't want to know more about me. leave me alone", but also give you flowers and make sweets for you, then you and avery are a perfect match!

his kindness. even if he's rude to most people, if avery cares about someone, he's okay with doing anything for them. if you need someone's shoulder to cry on, he will be here. he's not sure he can give a good advice, but at least he can listen to you. he also will try to make you feel better, maybe watching a romance movie together will help? or you two can take a walk in the garden.. really, you can tell him anything. he won't judge, he's not like those people who bullied him.

Summary:

In Remnant, when a witch comes of age at 15, they enroll in a six year witch school to learn the depths and wonders of magic. Ruby Rose is 13 when their magic matures and they receive a letter from Beacon Academy of Witchcraft. There’s no hope of hiding the early magic, but maybe they, their older sister, Yang, and their guardian, Little, can keep the rest of Ruby’s secrets hidden. Like their unnatural silver eyes, locked behind a glamour to look a plain grey. Or their natural intuition to magic, which is harder to hide. Yet, at Beacon, Ruby’s focus doesn’t stay on their own problems for long. Instead, Ruby finds themself following after Weiss Schnee, a fellow sproutling that Ruby suspects is in danger. When they discover how much danger Weiss is in, they vow to find a way to help her, no matter what. Corunir rolled his eyes, thinking along the same lines. "It's hardly my fault I grew."

"Eat fewer vegetables."

"Do you want to walk back?"

"...Maybe I do!"

He sighed heavily. "Don't say I never did anything for you. If we make it back before nightfall, I'll drop you off at your house. And if--"

"You'd make me walk home?"

"Of course not. But I'm not missing curfew. My mother will give me leave, of course, to take you home but--"

"Then I'll be the one out late, you scoundrel!"

"This whole thing is your fault Lorniel." He grinned to himself, getting an idea. "If you'd just learn to take better stock of your surroundings-"

That got the desired effect. He could feel her jerk, throwing her head back and laughing. "You sound just like Dad, I don't know how you do it! Oh, I wish he'd catch you at it just once so I could see the look on his face."

"I do not sound like that, you young rip-" Corunir started again, and Lorniel once again had to fight to suppress a giggling fit.

The sun was starting to set, but it wasn't near enough to dark to start worrying. At least, for Corunir to start worrying. Lorniel sighed and leaned forward so her head was on his shoulder.

"We've got to get in the same patrol. I think I'd die of boredom if I had to be a sentry somewhere without you on the other wall sending me gossip."

"We'd be sentries, we're supposed to be keeping watch."

"What if we're sentries in Bree, and you're in town and I'm stuck in the marshes and there's nothing going on?"

"They're sending Amlan to Bree-town."

"You know what I mean."

Corunir frowned. He could see home, but it was still a few minutes' walk. "Tell you what," he said after a moment, "if we get separated after getting our sashes, you promise not to die of boredom and I promise to always have a good story for you when I see you next. How does that sound?"

Lorniel snorted. "It sounds like you've got the easier end of the deal. What if you have to make dinner too?"

"Me? All you're doing is not dying of boredom! If anything, I should be paid in a good meal for a good story."

"Fine." Lorniel relented. "But it better be a good story."

"Better than the one we're telling your parents."

"My boot fell apart, that's not my fault!"

"No, but climbing around and over the thorn bushes when it did was your idea."

On 17 December 1944 - the day after German forces launched their Wacht-am-Rhein counter-offensive in the Ardennes - Me 262 jet bombers of I. and II./KG 51 conducted ground attack operations to the north of the core offensive area, targeting British troop and vehicle concentrations in northeastern Belgium. Taking off in gloomy weather at 1000 hrs from ll./KG 51's base at Hopsten, Hauptmann Rudolf Abrahamczik, Staffelkapitan of 2./KG 51, and Oberfeldwebel Hermann Wieczorek, also of 2. Staff el, were briefed to attack enemy motorised and armoured columns in and around Bree, a few kilometres west of the River Maas and close to the Dutch border. In a mission lasting 40 minutes, Abrahamczik's Leipheim-built Me 262A-1a Wk-Nr. 170106 '9K+LK' and Wieczorek's Schwabisch Hall-built Me 262A-1a Wk-Nr. 110613 '9K+DK' were each loaded with a pair of SD 250 semi armour-piercing fragmentation bombs. Both aircraft had previously been used by KG(J) 54. Such harassment operations proved to be a painful thorn in the side of Allied ground formations as they advanced north and east towards the frontier with the Reich.
