Top five actors/actresses you’d like to see Alycia working with. To add some difficulty, pick one of these dinamics/relationships (bonus points if you get five of each)
- parental figure (parent/grandparent)
- significant other
- best friend/sibling
- rival/enemy
- younger/older version of the same character
Girl. You... you just asked me for a 25 name list I feel like I'm back in school rn hell nah ily but omg babe 😭
(in no particular order)
1. Angelina Jolie, hands down this needs to be A Thing. It needs to.
2. Meryl Streep. Don't care in what capacity, I just want it gimme it
3. Julia Roberts. Bonus if they're mother/daughter in a romcom
4. Sandra Bullock. Maybe not even in a mother figure role, but rather a mentor? Again, bonus if there's a comedy element to it
5. Octavia Spencer in any capacity. I just adore all of her work and I think not only would she be someone who would really push/challenge/compliment Alycia in A-B-A-B scenes (which are generally Alycia's wheelhouse when she has costars that actually,,, give her emotions to work with which Octavia serves effortlessly), but also I think 1. Alycia would appreciate working with such a powerhouse AND 2. possibly soak up some of her advice/experience

Presidential level jealousy (Chapter 4) "Dressed to kill"
Stanley Forbes x reader (Me✌️💖) (Romantic) Pip, Ravi, Cara, Jake, and Devon x reader (Platonic)
Below is a reference to what mine and Stanley's costumes look like, minus my Chucky one (Thank you Matthew for this pic😌💖)
Tumblr media
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
"There's a killer stalking the white house and you're throwing a party!"
Said party the group was currently getting ready for, Pip and Ravi in their Bonnie and Clyde couples costume, Pip's hands still partially stained from helping Josh with his Batman costume before they left. Connor and Jamie both dressed up as characters from their favorite childhood show, Zack and Lauren in a disgustingly lovey dovey couples costume, they couldn't decide between an angel and devil or Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, settling on a mix between the two. And finally Cara, in her incredibly detailed Robin Buckley costume from her and Pip's Stranger things watch nights.
All getting ready to meet the others at the white house, of all places, Pip still wondered how they'd even managed to get in but thankful that they did, they needed to, to find Chucky and Grant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stanley and (Y/n) were at their shared home also getting ready. Stanley normally wouldn't give Halloween too much attention, except it was (Y/n)'s favorite holiday. They both decided to at least dress up, both head to toe in black outfits with matching black eye makeup, nothing specific, just... spooky. The pair not wanting to go all out after the year they'd had, nothing too big, but still dressed up.
(Y/n) was sitting on Stanley's lap, facing him and helping him with his eye makeup, intermittently having to touch up certain spots from the smudges caused by your periodic make out sessions, unfortunately because of the situation you guys were dealing with you didn't have time for anything more. You couldn't help yourselves though, seeing eachother all dressed up. "What time does this thing start?" Stanley said, not even knowing himself if he meant the party or the plan.
"8:45" she smiled, causing Stanley to throw his head back, partially in annoyance at their time constraints and partially in adoration of her smile. "Hey I need to finish." She said, tilting his head back up, rolling her eyes. "But we have all night when we get back... if we don't die." And Stanley nearly choked on nothing. "Except for the trick or treaters." He countered, even though he was more than ready to see her being so sweet with all the children. No matter how fucked his past was she always found a way to make any part of it seem beautiful.
(Y/n) finished up Stanley's makeup, stepping away from him to put everything away as Stanley watched her closely from his seat, her other costume packed and ready.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
8:35 pm, the group arrives at the white house, Halloween costumes and all, as if this year wasn't already scary enough. As they stepped out of the car it was like the coffee shop on steroids, security guards practically every few feet, large groups of people in costumes just, enjoying the holiday. They stood at the bottom of the grand steps staring up at the building. Jake in a cowboy Chucky costume, Devon in a construction Chucky costume, and finally (Y/n) in a girl Chucky costume, each fit with their own "accessories" in preparation for entering.
"Thoughts and prayers?" (Y/n) said looking toward Connor nervously who laughed uncomfortably in reply. Devon spoke next as they made their way up the steps. "I don't believe in prayer, not anymore, but I do believe in us." Jake nodding between the two. "Me too." Devon stopped as they were about to reach the entrance. "Let's do this for them." He said, referencing all the people Chucky had taken from them, aswell as the victim in Pip's case.
"And they'd want us to go fuck that fucker up."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As they entered they were met with more security, slapping bracelets on their wrists to mark their entry. "Next." (Y/n) walked through the the scanner first, immediately setting it off as she looked back towards the others nervously. The security guard waved the metal detecter wand over her partially exposed body, stopping at her head, the man mumbling under his breath and ripping the hair clip from her head causing her long red hair to fall down her shoulders. "What? Hey!"
"Next."
Jake walked through next, also setting off the alarm. "Whoa, easy cowboy. I'm gonna have to take that." The man said gesturing to Jake's lasso. "Seriously?" The man scoffed in clear annoyance, giving a sarcastic smile before replying coldly "Yeah."
"Next."
Devon walked through after, setting off the alarm, again. The man waved the metal detecter over Devon before patting him on the back, smiling.
"Have fun."
The rest of the group quickly following through, one by one, as (Y/n) and Jake rolled their eyes. "Fuck, there goes that. And my costumes ruined." (Y/n) said as Stanley jogged up to catch up to her. "You always look hot." Cara laughed, causing (Y/n) to shrug in agreement. "I still have my phone, so as long as we get Chucky on camera doing his thing, we can get it out there. We can tell Grant and the president, and Pip will have time to talk to Grant. We got this"
"Do we?!" (Y/n) asked, turning around to face the others. "Are people even gonna believe us? It's called a deep fake they'll just think it's special effects." Jake sighed in reply.
"Do you have a better idea?"
"No."
(Y/n) shook her head while the rest of the group listened. "We still have to subdue him somehow, he's won't talk just cause we say please, that might work on Grant, not Chucky." Pip crossed her frustrated with the holes in their plan. "We just have to work with whatever we find in here." Jake looked between the two girls before stepping past them. "We sure as hell aren't gonna find anything we can use on Chucky here." The group walking synchronized again. "We need to get upstairs to the residence." Devon said causing the others to look towards (Y/n), especially Stanley.
"Leave that to me."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They walked through another very tall, very wide entrance into another room, this room even more packed with people dressed in costumes. Before they could take three steps into the room someone dressed as a clown jumped infront of the group, yelling inches from their face. "I hate Halloween."
Stanley knew that was a lie, probably the biggest lie she's ever told, and she's had to lie to him about Chucky. Halloween was always her favorite holiday, even after everything that happened on both sides for them. After what happened to Stanley she had even asked him if he'd be more comfortable if they didn't celebrate it anymore, he of course denied her offer, but thought she was the sweetest for even asking.
Past the decently sized fake cemetery archway was where most of the people were, dancing, drinking, laughing. The group walked past a mime doing a high kick, Frankenstein's monster, and about a dozen witches, all the masks around making Ravi feel uneasy. They stared at their surroundings in awe, looking at all the lights, the people, and the giant swirling hypnosis type screen behind the dj, before the group heard (Y/n) let out a shriek. "Boo!" "Oh, shit!" They turned to see Grant with his arms wrapped around her from behind, Stanley having to resist the urge to rip him off of her.
"Hey, (Y/n). It's so good to see you." Grant said pulling her into a hug. "Happy Halloween!" She smiled at him, nervously looking towards Stanley. "Oh, you look amazing." Shit. Now she was even more anxious about Stanley. "T-thanks. You too." Grant looked nervous too, about half as nervous as she was, but still nervous. "Oh, um, I want you to meet my parents. They're over here." "Oh, cool. yeah." Grant lead her towards them, the rest of the group following closely behind.
"Mom, dad. Hey, excuse me, sorry." Grant said nudging some important looking people away from his parents. "This is (Y/n), um, and Jake and Devon, and... everybody else." He laughed awkwardly. "Hello. James Collins." Grant's dad shoot (Y/n)'s hand. "Hi. Nice to meet you." The rest of their introductions following.
Stanley knew it was stupid, knew it wasn't that big of a deal but he couldn't help it, couldn't help feeling that deep pit in his stomach, a mix of sadness and embarrassment at the fact that he couldn't bring (Y/n) to meet his parents. That was what normal couples did, he'd met hers, but she could never meet his.
"I just love your outfits." Grant's mother smiled at them. "Our son Henry loves Good Guys too. And Stranger Things." She said gesturing towards Cara who did a little bow. The Chucky look alikes thanking her. "Mine's the best though, right?" Devon said, doing a little twirl, Grant's mother laughing. "It's very impressive." "I know a guy." Devon said, leaning closer to Jake who tilted his head with a smile. "I take it you're the guy?" "Yeah. Jake" Jake replied with a smile, everyone smiling with what seemed to be genuin smiles for once, letting their guards down for a second and just enjoying themselves, even if the topic still revolved around Chucky.
"(Y/n), I admit I haven't heard much because our son is pretty tight-lipped, at least with his family." His mother said looking over (Y/n)'s features as Grant rolled his eyes embarrassed. "But what I have heard is great." The conversation faded away as Grant's father seemed to be distracted by something, or someone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hey, Grant, where is your brother?" (Y/n) said as the group followed Grant. "Henry? Uh, he's upstairs. He's having some kind of, like, mental breakdown or something." Grant said shaking his head and shrugging. "Oh, is there any way that we could see the residence?" She asked, immediately seeing Grant tense up. "Oh, um, that's kind of, like, a whole other thing. I mean, you thought the invite protocol was hard."
"I mean," (Y/n) stepped closer towards him. "I'd love to see your room." Grant, aswell as the rest of the group froze, Stanley gritting his teeth. "Yeah, for sure, follow me."
This was gonna be a long night.
Happy Halloween!🎃🔪❤️
When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass it on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love! 💖
Thankyou for this ask 💖 I don't know how to choose between them but I tried to and these are five i decided on:
Nasha Tera
This fic is so important to me and I just love it a lot and I'm glad I wrote it. It has a pretty big piece of me. I also reread it just today so feeling the love for it a little extra today as it is.
Moonstruck
This has all the things I love, polyamory, rare pairs, and gender. It is the second fic I have ever written and the first time I have entered a fest.
Blinding Lights
One of my first forays into writing smut and also a pairing that I just love (Harry Styles/Angelina Jolie!!). I have another foc with this pairing coming soon!!!
Know my worth
Another pairing that I just adored writing! (Louis Tomlinson/Lizzo).
Right Now I Can’t See Straight
This fic also has a piece of me in it too though only a glimpse. I think writing girl Zayn helps me explore things about myself more than any other character I write.
Turns out 4 out of 5 of these are girl direction so whoo. I don't know who hasn't done this already because I feel like most people have but ill try to find some people I can send this to.
Finally got around to watching the Eternals, so spoilers I guess if you haven’t seen it.
Tumblr media
First of all, the quizzes I took that say I’m a mixture of Dan Whitman and Sersi… accurate as fuck. I adore them both very much.
Gotta say, I’m kinda jealous of whatever gender Sprite has going on. But in all honesty I feel bad for them. Kingo’s whole Peter Pan speech actually made me feel bad. When Sprite said “Why did Arishem make me this way?” I actually choked up a bit. Like I’m so sorry he failed you kiddo. I’ve thought about it many times when I think about vampire lore, but imagine how much it would suck to be seen as a child for all eternity. When you’re literally thousands of years older than anyone currently around you.
Fucking Gilgamesh was the light of my fucking life. He is the best part of this movie and I will die on that fucking hill. It’s bullshit what they did to him. Ajax didn’t hit me that hard because we don’t get to know her nearly as much. But god fucking Damn it, give me my boy back.
Side note, I don’t really like Kingo that much. I just don’t think our personalities gel well. In all honestly, despite how much talent he clearly has, I’m not really a fan of any of that actors characters. I just don’t like the way his character didn’t take anything seriously.
Thena killed me. I’m a sucker for all Angelina Jolie characters. But imagine slowly loosing your mind and being forced to try and kill the people you love most in the world. Especially after she lost Gil, like what the duck, can she live? Can she fucking live? I wanna give my baby girl a hug.
I don’t think I have to say much about Druig, I think we all knew I’d love him. I wanna it’s Barry Keoghan. I’ve been mimicking his stupid adorable accent this whole movie! I think mind control is always one of those powers I’d be truly terrified to have. Like he tried to use them to protect people, and do the right thing. But talking away free will isn’t right. Also the way he flirts with Makkari 🥺 I want that.
I’ll make Phatos and Sersi quick. They are Both adorable and I love them and I wish them nothing but happiness. Like Phatos and his husband and his loiter boy were so cute. God I could watch a whole movie just of them interacting. I love to see POC characters being in the main action!
Least favorite is Ikaris. I hate his stupid smug face, and that silly little hair cut. White boy coming in here and ruining the vibes. Sure his power is kinda cool or whatever. But like even before the twist of the movie, I didn’t like him from the second he showed up. Sersi and Dan are perfect, and Ikaris needs to keep his nose out of their business. Get over her man. Gross.
Now to my favourite character ever. MAKKARI! My sweet baby girl. One she’s literally the hottest person I’ve ever seen, both physically and in personality. Oh my god and the way she signs is mesmerising. I kept reminding the movie just to watch her hands move. I will always love a character who knows sign language, and I think the representation is super important.
If you guys would like any Eternal fics or headcannons let me know. Because I feel cool writing them now that I have seen their cannon interpretations outside of the comics alone.
NewJeans Hyein’s Lips Are the Talk of the Town: Fans Praise Her for Her Unique Beauty
Tumblr media
NewJeans Hyein is one of the most popular idols in the K-pop scene, not only for her talent and charisma, but also for her distinctive feature: her plump lips. Fans have been gushing over her lips, which they say give her a foreign model vibe and a stunning visual.
How Hyein’s Lips Became a Hot Topic Among Bunnies
Tumblr media
(Photo : pann.nate) Bunnies, the official fandom name of NewJeans, have been admiring Hyein’s lips for a long time. Recently, a fan posted a forum on an online community, where they shared a photo of NewJeans in a Hogwarts yearbook picture edit. The photo was inspired by the famous fantasy novel series “Harry Potter” by J.K Rowling, and each member was assigned to a different house based on their personality and traits. The photo showed NewJeans dressed in Hogwarts uniforms, with Danielle in Gryffindor, Hanni in Ravenclaw, Yuna in Hufflepuff, and Hyein in Slytherin. The photo captured the attention of many fans, who praised the group’s visuals and concept. However, what stood out the most was Hyein, who looked fierce and gorgeous with her dark green uniform and her signature high ponytail.
Tumblr media
(Photo : pannchoa) The fan who posted the forum pointed out Hyein’s lips, which they said were “seriously on another level”. They wondered how thick her lips were, and expressed their envy and admiration for her unique beauty. They also added that Hyein’s lips helped her pull off the foreign model aura, which suited her well. The forum sparked a discussion among Bunnies, who agreed with the fan’s opinion and complimented Hyein’s lips. They also shared their thoughts on the other members’ outfits and houses, and expressed their love and support for NewJeans.
Tumblr media
(Photo : pannchoa) Here are some of the comments from the fans: I feel like Hyein’s lips really help her pull off that foreign model aura. I was shocked to see that her lips looked the same when she was younger and that she didn’t get any fillers. I’m so jealous, I bet it’s so fun to put lipstick on those kinds of lips. I also want to have thick lips. I have thick lips, but I don’t like it. It looks good on Hyein, and it suits her. Danielle seriously looks like a ‘Harry Potter’ character. I think Hanni matches Gryffindor more.
Hyein’s Lips Have Always Been Her Natural Charm
Tumblr media
(Photo : pannchoa) Hyein’s lips are not a recent phenomenon. In fact, she has always had them since she was a baby. Fans have found many photos of Hyein from her childhood days, where she showed her adorable and pretty face with her plump lips. Hyein has never been shy about her lips, and has often flaunted them in selfies and videos. She has also experimented with different lip colors and styles, from nude to red to glossy to matte. She has proven that she can rock any look with her lips, and that they are one of her best assets. Hyein’s lips have also been praised by other celebrities and media outlets. She has been featured in various magazines and shows, where she has been complimented for her beauty and charm. She has also been compared to other famous stars with thick lips, such as Angelina Jolie and Kylie Jenner.
Tumblr media
(Photo : Instagram: @newjeans_official) Hyein’s lips are not only beautiful, but also expressive. She can convey various emotions and moods with her lips, from cute to sexy to cool to playful. She can also make funny faces and gestures with her lips, which show her humorous and lively personality. Hyein’s lips are not only a part of her appearance, but also a part of her identity. They represent her confidence, charisma, uniqueness, and talent. They are what make her stand out among other idols, and what make her loved by many fans.
Hyein Continues to Impress Fans with Her Activities
Tumblr media
(Photo : Instagram: @newjeans_official) Hyein is not only known for her lips, but also for her skills and achievements as an idol. She is the youngest member of NewJeans, but she is also one of the main vocalists and dancers of the group. She has impressed fans with her powerful voice and smooth moves, as well as her versatility and charisma on stage. Hyein debuted with NewJeans in 2021 with their single “Super Shy”, which became a hit song among listeners. Since then, the group has released several songs and albums, such as “Love Bomb”, “Crazy”, “Dream On”, and “Lucky Star”. They have also won many awards and recognition for their music and performance, such as Rookie of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Dance Performance Female Group, Best Female Group, Song of the Year, and Artist of the Year. Hyein has also been active in other fields, such as modeling, acting, and variety shows. She has appeared in various fashion magazines and shows, such as Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Louis Vuitton. She has also starred in several dramas and movies, such as “School 2023”, “The Heirs 2”, “Love Alarm 3”, and “Parasite 2”. She has also participated in many variety shows and programs, such as “Running Man”, “Knowing Bros”, “King of Mask Singer”, and “Street Woman Fighter”.
Tumblr media
(Photo : Hyein (Kpop Wiki)) Hyein has also been involved in many social and charitable causes, such as environmental protection, animal welfare, education, and human rights. She has donated to various organizations and foundations, such as UNICEF, WWF, Greenpeace, Save the Children, and Amnesty International. She has also volunteered in many events and campaigns, such as planting trees, cleaning beaches, teaching children, and raising awareness. https://twitter.com/newjeans_loop/status/1708903428955787520?s=20 https://twitter.com/gucciphamkr/status/1708865209341997566?s=20 https://twitter.com/4PFhanni/status/1708891547473977780?s=20   Hyein is a role model and inspiration for many people, especially for young girls who aspire to be like her. She has shown that she is not only a beautiful idol with thick lips, but also a talented and successful artist with a big heart. What do you think of Hyein’s lips? Eternals Writer Blames Harry Styles’ Marvel Character For Infinity War
Tumblr media
Exclusive: Eternals writers Matthew 'Kaz' Firpo & Ryan Firpo say that Harry Styles' Eros is to blame for Thanos' actions in Avengers: Infinity War.
Warning: this article does contain spoilers (most of which we already know) but if you still wanna be surprised, don’t read ahead!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Styles' Eros/Starfox is to blame for Thanos' (Josh Brolin) misguided actions in Avengers: Infinity War, Eternals writers say. Marvel Studios' latest film directed by Chloé Zhao introduced a whole new superhero team to the MCU. But, it also debuted a couple of more characters who are not members of the main Eternals lineup such as Kit Harington's Dane Whitman, as well as Styles' Eros.
As per the comics, Dane will eventually become Black Knight in the MCU despite appearing as a non-powered human in Eternals. Meanwhile, things are a little bit different for Eros. Introduced in Eternals' post-credits scene as Thena (Angelina Jolie), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), and Druig (Barry Keoghan) attempt to find their other missing teammates, Starfox was introduced by Pip the Troll (voiced by Patton Oswalt). Not much is known about the character thus far, but Marvel Studios is sticking to his print origins as the younger brother of Thanos. While the MCU has yet to learn what their dynamic was like, the writers for Eternals are convinced that Eros has something to do with how the Mad Titan turned out to be.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Matthew 'Kaz' Firpo & Ryan Firpo were asked if there was any intention of bringing in Thanos' dad, A'lars, who was first mentioned in Avengers: Infinity War, in Eternals. The pair acknowledged the Mad Titan's fascinating origins story having ties to both Eternals and Deviants. In the end, Kaz went further by saying that having a perfect brother who's able to make everyone adore him in Eros may have scarred Thanos. Inadvertently, this was why he was hell-bent on making an impact through the snap. Read the writers' quotes below:
Kaz Firpo: We were actually, like, powerfully familiar with the crazy Thanos origin story, which I'm pretty sure is full-blown Greek myth where he, like, killed his own mother I wanna say... It's been a little bit since I read those arcs, we did a deep-dive into Thanos...
Ryan Firpo: She rejected him.
Kaz Firpo: Yeah, he was born from an Eternal and raised as a Deviant, and he's sort of caught in between the two, so there is a lot of... again, that early connective tissue.
But I think, for the sake of this movie as a film, we really just decided to tell this story, and maybe when we get out into the cosmos you might... I mean, we're literally meeting Thanos' actual brother at the end of the film, and I think there's room for Eros - well, Harry [Styles] - to have a conversation about that.
I think that Starfox is a lot responsible for why Thanos is the way he is, to have that... all jokes aside, to have this perfect brother who can make anyone fall in love with him? It does something to you. So I hope we get to see a little bit more of that in Number 2.
For those unfamiliar with Starfox from the comics, Thanos' brother didn't have the Deviant gene that gave the Mad Titan his purple skin. Instead, Eros looks like a normal Eternal — even a good-looking one. He has all the basic Eternals powers, but his signature skill is that he's able to psionically stimulate the pleasure centers of someone's brain. Essentially, Starfox can control someone's emotions, primarily making them like him. Given Thanos' issues with his image, hence the moniker Mad Titan, it's possible that he was psychologically scarred by the inevitable comparisons to his brother. Because of this, he became obsessed with his life-long crusade to supposedly save the universe via the snap in Avengers: Infinity War. In hindsight, this makes Thanos a more empathetic villain. Not that the decimation is suddenly justifiable, but this offers a better insight as to what the purple villain's real motivation was.
With Thanos now dead in the Sacred Timeline, it's curious if Marvel Studios ever plans on showing him with Eros through flashbacks or other forms of creative storytelling. It's safe to assume that Starfox has a long future in the MCU as one of the newest characters to be introduced in the franchise via Eternals. This gives them plenty of time to explore his origins and relationship with his big brother, and perhaps even confirm or deny if he has anything to do with the snap in Avengers: Infinity War.
Hello! Recently I've seen a lot of twst blogs arguing on how twst characters are mischaracterized, especially Malleus. So do you have any ideas on how he is mischaracterized? Also, is it okay to ask for your general opinion on questions like a short character analysis or how a healthy a relationship with each twdt guy might be? Hope it's okay to ask!
For your first question anon, it's a GREAT thing to ask and to be honest I've been waiting for a chance to talk about him! And for your second one, yes, of course! I just love writing character analyis and it's totally okay to ask for character/personality/relationship analysis here! I've got a lot to say about Malleus so this is going to a detailed analysis about his whole personality.
Tumblr media
There are commonly two popular opinions on how Malleus is which divides the fandom into two groups:
Group A:
Those who consider him to be an absolutely soft, baby dragon who just wants to be invited and have a friend. They believe that Malleus needs more attention and can be quite affectionate at the time, he can also be sometimes idiotic toward simple stuff like working with a computer or trying to talk with others which makes him even more adorable. "Despite Malleus's harsh and emo appearance and terrifying powers, Malleus is just a small baby inside," is also a common belief of this group.
Group B:
Those who argue that group A is totally shading everything important about Malleus's personality and true self just because he looks cute and plays with a childish tamagotchi. These group also comes up with rather strong points about his personality such as his status as a crown prince, his naturally dark personality as not only a dark fae but also Maleficent's grandchild, his maturity and cold nature and also, the aspect of his hellish powers which can make him look like an absolute monster at the time.
I believe most of you are familiar with these points of view but the question is, which one of them is the real Malleus?
And the answer is: Neither of them; yet both of them do have a point.
The main problem is how the fandom portraits him as either an emotional tamagotchi baby or an absolutely cold and heartless mister of evil, while the true Malleus is far beyond than just being either good, or bad.
Now let's discuss some of the important facts and common mistakes about Malleus's personality:
(1) Malleus isn't a baby, but he isn't a monster either
This is supposedly the main idea here which will be continued to be discussed through the rest of this analysis. This is often how many end up mischaracterizing him because: the way the describe Malleus is either too dark or too childish. What we need here, is a balance. This is the grandson of one of the most important Disney villains that we are talking about, and don't forget that Maleficent herself was confirmed to consume the powers of Hell, as she was indeed the mistress of all evil. So this dragon boy here surely isn't one to underestimate, and he clearly has inherited that hellish power of her grandmother. It's obviously seen through the story as well, from the way he was presented in chapter 2 and beans day event to how terrified other students always are to even talk about him.
But the thing is, there are softer aspects of his personality as well which prove that Malleus isn't just designed to present an undefeatable force of evil, and this is exactly what makes his personality a lot more interesting.
(2) Malleus is actually hard to approach and talk to
Let's be honest, Malleus isn't as soft and easy to befriend as many fans consider him to be. He doesn't get too friendly or chill as he speaks, and even his close allies like Silver and Sebek fail to get close to him as much as they wish to. When we talk about his dark aura, we aren't just talking about his horns and fearsome magic, it's also because of his personality itself. His calm yet cold tone always remains still regardless of who he's talking to. No need to mention that he isn't an ordinary student either, he not only comes from a well-known family but is also the crown-prince of valley of thorns. Out of all twst characters Malleus is the only one who is directly connected to the great seven by being Maleficent's grandson. His family and people on the other hand are overly protective over him, to the point of not letting him to even have a fake proposal in the ghost marriage event which means that Malleus has also got each and every of his actions under watch.
(3) He's slowly getting used to isolating himself
In his ceremonial robes story, he's obviously upset that he never had a chance to wear his ceremonial robes because he never got invited, but when Lilia says he'd one day overcome his ill fate and gets to wear them as he always wanted to, he says that he's fine. Then again when Lilia tried to bring him to the singing test in chapter 5 he avoids showing up. In his voice lines he also said: "Are you as well scared of me?" which is clearly shouting that he's no longer surprised to see people being afraid of him, he's getting used to being feared and at some point, hated. That's probably one of the bitter sides of his personality which he's slowly giving up on trying to change it.
(4) Malleus has got a great confidence and isn't shy at all
There many fanfics in which Malleus is presented as a shy boy who's scared of confessing to his s/o or asking them out, while he's the total opposite in reality. Just like Maleficent herself, he speaks calmly and in a formal tone, is very respectful as he speaks, and isn't one to ever have problem while talking to others.
It's others who always avoid talking to him while Malleus himself isn't the least uncomfortable with presenting his ideas and asking others for help when he needs to.
He isn't ever shy over his lack of ability to work with machines or asking others for help for seemingly childish issues like having his tamagotchi fixed or finding a friend for the GaoGao dragon.
The only thing left is how Lilia described him as "Kind of shy" in chapter five, which is most likely because of another reason discussed in part (3)
(5) He doesn't eat ice cream and play with a tamagotchi for no reason
Malleus explained that everything is ran by magic back in the valley of thorns and no one really uses any machines there, that's how he's pretty new to both technology and complicated tools.
I believe that the tamagotchi part was given to him on purpose, because else than showing the fact that he's bad with tools, it's great contrast to the harsh picture that his power and personality gives him!
Admit it, it's a funny and somehow, adorable contrast to see one of the strongest magicians who can burn the room to ashes in just a matter pf second playing with a children's toy. And I believe that it was given to him on purpose. They meant to give him some soft and cute features as well instead of just presenting him as an evil fae. He is indeed evil and his powers are terrifying, and that's how watching him play with a tamagotchi is rather surprising to many. If you saw Ortho or Cheka playing with one it wouldn't have gone any further than a simple "Awww" or "How cute" because it's something you'd expect to see from a kid, but when you see Malleus of all people playing with it, you can't help but to fascinated and flustered over how cute this fae's habits can be.
Ice cream on the other hand doesn't really have to do with cuteness, it's something Yana Toboso discovered while doing her researches on fae mythology which discuses that Dark faes enjoy cold and sweet foods, especially cream. So it doesn't really have anything to do with him being either a soft or a cruel boy, it's just a normal part of his nature as a fae.
(6) He might be crazily old to humans, but he's still pretty young as a fae
This one has really been getting on my nerves, come on people! It's true that he's probably been living for decades and possibly, centuries but don't forget that it isn't that much compared to a normal fae! Even Sebek calls him 'Young master' which means that he's still a pretty young one, no need to mention that he hasn't yet became the king either so he's not much different from the rest of the students in NRC.
I've seen people saying: "No Malleus won't do that he's -too old-" and I've got to say: What?
Come on even someone like Lilia who's been living for over 5 centuries can act like a nasty 14 year old at the time, so for faes at least, age isn't a limitation.
Malleus on the other hand is still a teenage fae! He needs to discover new things and talk with more people, just like a normal human being does. So if he doesn't enjoy doing anything too silly or stupid, it's because of his 'personality', not because he's too old. Even when tells Lilia that he isn't a child anymore, it's like how an 18 year old says it to his father.
(7) Malleus won't take insult easily
He is polite and respectful in general, but when he's offended, he'd seriously respond to it. Remember that a single swipe of hand from him can set the whole room on fire.
Rook and Leona were probably one step away from being burnt and when Leona really got on Malleus's nerves by humiliating him, Malleus stopped respecting him as a prince of an ally kingdom and humiliated back.
He is calm but to a specific point, and you can make sure that he won't be any soft or forgiving if you offend him, and it'll probably end in no good if he gets mad. So better not think that Malleus is one to just keep it in and later cry in a room because he's sad baby when someone dares insult him.
(8) Angelina Jolie's Maleficent has nothing to do with his story!
Nope, Malleus never had a lover who cut off his wings and sent him to a hell of depression and loneliness, and no you cannot find those two wounds on his back regardless of how romantic it may seem.
I admit it, it's a lovely Au, but it's JUST AN AU! I can still see people saying stuff like "Ohh!! Will we discover if Malleus too had his wings cut off in chapter 7?" and the answer is NO. While Angelina Jolie's Maleficent is surely a great one on its own, it needs be understood that twst's source of main information and characters designs is nothing else than the original Disney villains.
Malleus cannot be associated with any Maleficents else than the version we saw in 1959's sleeping beauty and it's an important fact to look through.
(9) Malleus is NOT Maleficent!
While they are a lot more similar than you can imagine(in both power and personality), let's not forget that Malleus is NOT Maleficent! He's a total new character on his own, and is unique in his own way.
He is twisted from Maleficent which means that no matter how similar they are, Malleus is a new character with a new personality.
Saying that he isn't soft at all and the fandom will see his true face when he overblots ( It's supposed to mean that the real Malleus is an absolutely evil and destructive one, just like Maleficent) is nothing different from denying all of Yana's hard work on designing him and his personality!
Malleus himself said that his grandmother's skills were far greater than his and most importantly: Malleus still has chance to have a better fate than Maleficent did.
Once again: He's still young! He still has a chance to be saved from turning into a heartless and isolated creature like Maleficent. No matter how cold he is, he hasn't yet got to the point of hating the whole world and losing all of his emotions. And that's why it's totally wrong to deny all the good that he might still have inside by saying that he isn't soft at all. He isn't a baby, but he isn't a monster either. Not yet.
(10) Even Lilia agrees that Malleus is still learning and his personality is in development
Can't you see? Malleus isn't attending to this school for no reason. His magic is already top notch, and his knowledge goes far greater than anything they might teach in NRC.
If you take a look at the story, you'll see signs of Lilia indirectly giving us signs of why Malleus still needed to attend to this school. In Malleus's SR robes' story, Lilia told him that he still has a lot to learn and knowledge isn't everything. And what might he find in NRC which has nothing to do with knowledge? People.
Lilia is trying to hold him back from isolating himself like Maleficent did, and is indeed trying to help him make friends and learn to get along with people without thinking that it's useless because they'd fear him anyway.
Also, he clearly wants Malleus to learn and experience new things in NRC by taking part in activities. In Malleus's Halloween SR story Lilia, who was always the one to choose Diasomnia's Halloween costumes, asks Malleus to choose this year's costume instead of him. Lilia first says that he wants Malleus to do it but later tells him that he has other reasons as well, he was trying to put Malleus into trying something new therefore he can have something learn from the experiment! (What a cute papa he really is...)
This is another proof of him not having the cold and unapproachable picture some imagine him to have, he isn't against experiencing and trying new things.
(11) He's still looking for a true friend
Malleus needs a friend, that's a fact. During his chats he mentions how Maleficent always had her loyal pet crow by her side as the only reliable creature she could always trust, and how Malleus wonders if he can ever find such a worthy ally of his own.
Even as he has Lilia, Silver and Sebek by his side he doesn't feel like he has such a friend.
People have been avoiding him through his whole life, and you can see how excited he got when Cater asked him for a selfie as he was one of the very first people who ever tried to approach him.
While he's slowly getting used to being feared by everyone, he'd still appreciate a friend and he needs one. Not even Maleficent herself could've made it all on her own without a friend by her side.
(12) Malleus isn't heartless
While he won't easily fall for anything or anyone, it isn't impossible for him to love.
We haven't yet seen anything that directly gets us to the point of love in the story but it's something you can tell through his actions and words.
When he cares for something or someone, he'd be serious about it.
Two obvious examples would be his tamagotchi and the ramshackle dorm. He'd certainly get out of his way to find someone to fix his dear tamagotchi and as we saw in the Halloween event, he furiously stated that he'd burn anyone who tries to the ramshackle dorm any harm, because he likes that place.
There isn't much he holds dear in life, but when he does, he won't let a single soul to take it away from him.
When he can be this protective over something that just entertains him, just try to imagine how far he might go to protect the one he loves. He falls in love very slowly and it'll probably take him a while to realize it if he actually does. He can begin with small interests and repeated meetings but at some point, it'll turn into a routine, an obsession. He won't easily fall in love, but when he does, he won't be able to easily let go of it either.
(13) His relationship with MC is far more important than you're thinking
Just by going through his voice lines, you can tell how MC is effecting Malleus's personality and life. I'm not saying that it's love or anything but the thing is, MC is changing Malleus nonetheless.
Their relationship has been a totally new thing for Malleus to experience from the very beginning, because MC didn't know him. Malleus is obviously used to being well-known as the infamous prince of the Draconia family by almost everyone, but MC was an exception.
He asked MC to talk to him and tell him stories, it can be clearly see that he enjoys talking to them.
He also mentioned that MC has made him feeling lots of things he hadn't felt before, which can also be connected to part (10) where we discussed how he's still young and needs more of communication and friends because he needs to learn.
Some argue that Malleus couldn't care less about MC and the only reason he shows up around them is because of the ramshackle dorm, which can be easily proven wrong by two hints:
1) Malleus sent a Happy holiday card to MC after the winter holiday.
2)What Malleus told Lilia at the end of the Halloween event stories after all the troubles that was brought upon the ramshackle dorm: "I want that human to enjoy Halloween too"
While it isn't necessarily romance that we're talking about, his relationship with MC is clearly telling us that he's a lot more of emotions and humanity inside him than what we were expecting.
At this point, it's important to see that in spite of his cold nature and mature personality he is slowly beginning to feel more and more emotions as the result of meeting newer people in NRC, especially MC. Saying that he is nothing but a heartless fae who is wrongly thought to be a soft and emotional boy is nothing different from judging him the same way as most of the people in twisted wonderland itself judge Malleus, it's important to see that he's a lot more.
His personality itself is surely amazing and as a Malleus hoe stan myself I can't wait to get more of his background in chapter 7, although it's probably going to be dark as well. They really did give his design a twist and that's how he's a balance of and menacingly powerful magician and a young boy who's just learning to deal with emotions.
Tumblr media
For now, that's all I had in mind! Hope that I didn't miss anything. This was a general character analysis which also discussed some of the common mistakes about Malleus's personality but-
In case that you're wondering how he's being mischaracterized in reader insert fics, that'll be a totally different issue to discuss which would also need another post to be discussed through.
Small note: Just saying that there's often a dark lore to twst x reader fics (Especially for Malleus/ Leona x reader) which is usually better to be ignored while reading/writing for them...
Watched Eternals!! Spoiler + Long Post
I feel like a generally average MCU fare in terms of plot and action pieces. First time they’ve really decided to include a Cliffhanger in the main part of the film, at least in terms of intro movies (except First Avenger but that was right before The Avengers so it made sense)… introduced a new big bad in The Celestials… I hear it wasn’t the big Celestials movie people were hoping for but it wasn’t as trash fire as some had led me to believe…
All that said, I enjoyed the cast. The Eternals themselves had a fun dynamic. But with so many new characters to introduce the audience, whilst also balancing the “we’ve known each other for centuries” group dynamic, the individual characterisation fell kind of flat and one-dimensional.
I love Gemma Cham but her character was so often just staring around conflicted and not actually doing anything except occasionally turning a rock into a butterfly (I exaggerate obvi). Her chemistry with her two love interests just didn’t feel as compelling as it could have been (which is why I get the obsession with Druig x Makari)… I was v interested in Gilgamesh and Thena and the fact he spent centuries doing what Black Widow became for the Hulk
Give me your hand vs The sun’s getting real low XD
Sprite was an interesting case but with so many characters, the more compelling elements of her story were lost in the bigness of the story. Like we see one scene of her trying to woo a guy, and then it’s revealed she’s got Tinkerbell syndrome and is in love with Ikaris and then she has a big spat with Sersi in the final battle before getting conked by Druig. And then all is forgiven and she becomes human?! Again an unfortunate product of a bunch of characters getting introduced in one story.
I loved Gilgamesh. If they find other Eternals and it’s a situation where they just look like the same but are “variants” then we can bring back best boi Don Lee aka Ma Dong-seok!!
Would love to see more of Druig and Makari and I guess we shall see them romping about the stars with Harry Styles aka Josh Brolin’s baby bro????
Faustus/Phostos however his name is spelt, I liked him. Him having a family was a lovely and having a male partner with an (adopted I’m assuming) son! Him mostly getting the better of Ikaris was nice.
Makari was a delight! More of her! Her and Druig were fun too. Good to see deaf representation and everyone just knowing sign language, demonstrating it is never something that impedes her.
I think they restrained Angelina Jolie’s natural star power well in making her Thena. And her ability to appear delicate but uncompromisingly fierce was great.
Who else? Ah yes the non-event comedic relief but also makes a compelling case for the moral grey area between the resolute and loyal to the directive, Ikaris, and the loves and appreciates the value of life, Sersi: Kingo.
He gives his reasons just fine for not being able to pick a side but then doesn’t join for the final fight in any capacity but then is shown to be taking charge of Human!Sprite and then is swept along anyway by Arishem. I’d like to see more of him but felt unfulfilled.
SPEAKING OF LACK OF FULFILMENT. DID IKARIS REALLY JUST LAUNCH HIMSELF INTO THE SUN?!? Apologises but doesn’t deal with any of the repercussions of his actions… I know “Icarus who flew too close to the sun blah blah” but his character was so much more interesting than that?! Like he actively chose to separate from the empathetic and nurturing Sersi who adored humanity bc he was loyal to the mission he had be indoctrinated into and when his whole purpose for being was threatened he killed Ajak, someone very dear to him, but still stuck by his beliefs despite it putting himself against someone he loves. And the Deviants were experiencing the same journey in that Arishem abandoned them as failures and the Eternals were complicit in their destruction despite just following orders and then evolving and having free will like living creatures are meant to have.
Could he have then become this morally ambiguous character trying to figure out which side he was on and embrace the natural human instinct of finding new purpose in his life? Kinda like that one dude in Dr Strange who realises The Ancient One used Dark Magic??? Yes! But instead he flew into the sun. Your symbolism didn’t land as well as you thought it did Marvel! Idk maybe he’ll come back but that was such a nonsensical resolution to his character arc. Not to mention, as soon as he appeared to Sprite and Sersi’s aide in London, I pegged him as the bad guy. Getting too predictable now.
Overall again this movie was ok. A good set-up movie for the many things coming up. But the pacing in the beginning was terrible, it was one character intro after another, really awkwardly placed flashback sequences, a butt ton of exposition, and then a very rude and unruly cliffhanger ending with two very cliffhanger end credits scenes. Eternals really didn’t try to be complete on its own.
There were beats I genuinely enjoyed. Like, funnily enough, the most interesting character to me was Kingo’s valet, Karun? A human among gods. He gets told to go home because the world is ending but for that same reason he chooses to stay because what is the point in returning with this knowledge of his impending doom. May as well watch their journey unfold.
Him thinking Kingo was a vampire, trying to stab him, then becoming Kingo’s closest confidante and companion in many ways?
Despite Kingo’s own beliefs about what the Eternals should do, he becomes the voice of humanity. “Hey, please save us? I would really appreciate it, but I’m probably biased”. Him leading the prayer for Gilgamesh’s funeral. Determinedly continuing to be a loyal cameraman and accepting the aggression of the Eternals at him trying to do his job in stride and even calling them out for being so angry.
And then him just being generally affable and pleasant and naturally funny. There were some moments that clearly were gunning for a laugh but his role was genuinely fun.
Like the story was so big beyond its boundaries that it was nice to see such a simple but well-rounded character.
That said I do look forward to where they take this cast and hope we have more time to get to know them beyond what they struggled to convey in this one.
Flirty Hermione is the best Hermione and Narcissa agrees!
Just a character study while I work on a few storyboards - yes, I decided to use Jorja Smith as a reference for Hermione and Angelina Jolie as a reference for Narcissa because WHY NOT
If you haven’t read Klexos yet, go give it a try! It’s a Cissamione story in which Narcissa loses her memory while hunting down a wizarding and muggle mafia, and Hermione has to help her solving the case. Also, they are married and have two absolutely adorable daughters - but, argh, try convincing Cissy about that!
More drawings and stuff coming soon!
I saw Eternals last night and oh boy oh boy do I have feelings about it.
So I've seen criticisms about the pacing of the film and how it felt draggy or boring at times but I sat through MoS and BvS so in good faith I cannot say I was ever bored during my first watch of Eternals. If anything I actually needed the moments of quiet and extended transitions to help me process whatever the last scene had thrown at me. There was a lot of information to absorb throughout the whole movie and it helped to stop me from getting confused. The film's score is fucking superb (of course it is, it's Ramin fucking Djawadi) and the cinematography and costumes are beautiful and engaging. You can just absolutely tell a woman directed this film and it works so well.
*Spoilers begin*
I love characters. Holy fuck do I love characters. Ensemble movies are really hard to do justice to but even moreso when the entire ensemble is brand new characters. Cloe Zhao had to make us love an entire 10+ character cast in like two hours and at least for me she succeeded.
I loved Thena so much; the powerhouse tank goddess of war suffering from celestial android PTSD that winds up being the key to the truth about the Eternals themselves was AMAZING. Her partnership with Gilgamesh and how he cared for her and protected her so perfectly while still retaining his own unique personality was perfect; I loved them the way I loved Aquaman's parents. His death was the one to actually get to me and half of that was Angelina Jolie's acting in that scene really selling it to me.
Every single second Kingo is on screen after the timeskip is literally the best. I love his presence as a character and how believable he is as an entire dynasty of Bollywood movie stars. He's entertaining as fuck but still deep and intriguing as a character and I'm very excited to see more from him.
Druig is probably my favorite Eternal by personality and design alone; the fact that he was the first Eternal to question the parameters of their mission and demand to understand why they couldn't intervene even when the humans around them were causing chaos and war. He isn't even necessarily the most ethical of them despite this, considering he was running a mind-control cult in South America when we find him in the modern day, but he's just so intriguing! Plus his relationship with Makkari is just 10/10, absolutely adorable. Speaking of Makkari, I feel like she's going to get a more prominent role in the follow-up film and I'm glad for it. I love speedster characters as a rule and her personality is extremely fun and cute and quirky and I love that she speaks exclusively in ASL. I'm also on the side of "glad that Makkari and Druig didn't kiss" because quite honestly Hollywood has ruined kiss scenes for me 🤷 physically intimate moments that don't include kissing (see; the hug at the end of Rogue One) and that leave the nature of a relationship up for interpretation are my JAM. I'm not sure if I want to view Makkari and Druig as romantic just yet and I get that option because I didn't have to watch them make out. Similarly, I thought the hand-touch scenes between Ikaris and Sersi were so much more profound and moving than anything else they did.
Especially that sex scene. That's literally the only thing I would straight-up cut from the film entirely if I had the option. It went on too long and didn't add anything beneficial or meaningful to the story. It was definitely the sauciest scene Marvel has ever put in a movie but it was unnecessary.
I felt a little shafted when I realized Ajak was already dead at the start of the film. I see why she needed to be, since even after the split of the team during the Inquisition she still had an air of unquestionable authority and if she were alive for any part of the active plot it would have detracted from Sersi's arc in a big way. Also, her armor design was the absolute coolest.
Phastos was BRILLIANT. Absolutely phenomenal from his character design to his growth as a person to his actor's performance. He was animated and present and fascinating in every possible way, and his modern life with his husband and son was just beautiful. Even if it didn't have the added bonus of pissing off homophobes and racists all around the world, I cannot stress enough how excellent the portrayal of his relationship and family was. This was gay representation finally, FINALLY done right. None of the other characters gave him shit or even questioned him for being married to a human man, we didn't suffer through any cliche, pandering lines, and Disney didn't once try to use it as marketing clout. His marriage was depicted as naturally as anything else and that's exactly how you do it.
Also, I've seen discourse stirring up about Phastos and his small scene after the bombing of Hiroshima, and while I do think there is discussion to be had over having specifically the black character in the ensemble voice feeling responsible for humanity's war crimes, I feel like a lot of viewers on tumblr in particular are taking this scene supremely out of context or else wilfully misunderstanding it entirely. Nothing about the scene implies at all that Phastos was directly responsible for nuclear technology. Earlier scenes in Babylon showing him inventing the steam engine for humanity, only for Ajak to instruct him to take it back a notch and settle for introducing them to the plow instead, which he's very put-off by. The scene in Hiroshima is foreshadowed by this, as by the time humanity has reached atomic bomb levels of technology, Phastos believes his assistance in the advancement of human industry and invention helped bring about more destruction and harm than good (and given what Arishem reveals later about the purpose of humanity he isn't completely wrong). Phastos is /not/ responsible but he carries the guilt anyway, though at the same time when he tells Ajak "they aren't worth saving" as he breaks down and cries, he acknowledges that despite his hand in human advancement throughout history, in the end it was the choices of the humans themselves that lead to the destruction. If anything at all throughout our history was going to make a sentient, godlike being truly give up on us, it would probably be nuclear warfare. The inclusion of Hiroshima didn't feel at all like it was done in bad faith or was somehow making light of it (I saw somebody call it a throwaway scene and I just 🤷🤷🤷). Obviously this is just my take on it.
One other thing about Phastos; it's stated repeatedly, by multiple characters, that Ikaris is the strongest of them all and is generally considered unbeatable. Of all the Eternals, Phastos is the only one to keep Ikaris contained for any significant amount of time. He's the only one who comes close to actually defeating him, though both Thena and Makkari give him a good beating. The only thing I want to see more of with Phastos is more of his family, more of his relationship with his husband, more on the people who restored his faith in the people he believed couldn't be worth saving.
Sprite was an exceptionally fun character. Her powers were so cool, and the allusion to her being the source of many of the ancient world's myths and legends is a really interesting idea (the tale of Icarus, the epic of Gilgamesh, etc) I would have been totally happy with her as a plucky sidekick the entire time, but giving her the unrequited love sideplot was actually a really awesome move that gave her frustrations with her presented age and appearance greater depth. She was never portrayed as a rueful or vindictive person towards Sersi or Ikaris despite loving him and bring jealous of her. She loved Sersi too, and stayed with her because they were family. She never blamed Sersi for having things she wanted, and only really held it against her at the very end because she believed she was supporting the "right" side of the conflict (Ikaris'). I personally think one of the biggest missed opportunities for this film was in regards to Sprite; I think it would have been a massive step in the right direction to have made her non-binary. Honestly when I first saw her I didn't even think she was meant to be female; her costume styling and haircut screamed androgynous and her voice and mannerisms didn't skew masculine or feminine to me. I still thought she might even be a boy when she was hiding in the illusion of an older woman at the bar with Sersi and Dane. Nothing else would have had to change at all, not her love for Ikaris or desire to grow, because her entire story arc fits a non-binary character to a T. She even has this incredibly poignant line where she asks, despairingly, why Arishem made her this way. That was the most queer-coded line in a film I've ever heard and I can only imagine how many people struggling with their identities and outward presentations felt seen when they heard it.
The film sort of lost Sprite for me towards the end, if I'm being honest. I thought the plot was setting Ikaris up for a fake out when Sprite chose to go with him and support the completion of the emergence. I thought that Sprite was either planning to sabotage him from the very start or else was going to have an emotionally tumultuous moment fighting her teammates and switch sides during the battle. I felt pretty let down, but also didn't hate that while she was clearly conflicted still, she chose to stand by and choose Ikaris over Sersi despite loving them both. What I didn't particularly get or enjoy was Sersi abruptly offering to make her human with "leftover energy" from the celestial. I don't even understand how the leftover energy worked in the first place, but more to the point I don't feel like Sprite's dissatisfaction with her physical form and frustration with her unrequited affection for Ikaris foreshadowed being turned into a human at the end. It felt very abrupt and flat and I just wasn't that into it. It was my second least-favorite thing after the sex scene.
Also, as a side note; Kingo's Peter Pan allegory was an excellent bit of dialogue. I had absolutely no idea the movie intended for Sprite to be in love with Ikarus the way Tinker Bell loved Peter Pan but once he said it I was like "oh, of COURSE!"
Side note of the side note; Kingo was absolutely in love with Ikaris too. He was playing him in his latest movie when they find him post timeskip, portraying him as the sexy leading heart-throb. He expresses admiration and very unwavering loyalty to Ikaris up until the reveal of the truth, and sits the last battle out entirely because he can't bear to choose sides.
Finally, onto Ikaris. I knew he was shady from the moment he showed up in London. I didn't exactly assume he was going to be the "villain" in the end, but I knew there was something sus about him when Sersi explained he'd just up and disappeared on her without explanation. While their romantic backstory was a little bland, their wedding scene was sweet and it made me sure that whatever made Ikaris leave her before the events of the movie couldn't have been good. I do appreciate that while they kept up the "good soldier, follows orders, doesn't question them" theme they had for him until the very end, I like that he didn't stay robotic or one-note the entire time. Like the Icarus of mythology, he's shown to be a bit vain and overconfident at times ("I could lead them" (the Avengers) and also funny and a little awkward ("I am beautiful"/"You're breaking up?"/ getting yeeted into a building by a deviant while clearly trying to make an impressive entrance for Sersi in London). He was subtle but he wasn't absolutely blank, so when his true colors were revealed in the flashback it was all the more jarring. This heroic vestige of a man lead his leader, who trusted and loved him, to her death and then watched her die, only to then plant her body strategically to feed into his lies. Yes, I absolutely bought how much it pained him to kill Ajak, just as I bought his feelings of absolute failure after the death of the celestial inside Earth, but he still did it all. He lied to and manipulated his family, successfully killed one and tried pretty damn hard to kill several others. The only thing I didn't care for was that after all that, after killing Ajak and then threatening and fighting his teammates without so much as a blink, he suddenly just absolutely can't bring himself to harm Sersi at all. He falls to his knees and watches her win, and then accepts his failure and flies into the sun. He self-destructs because his perceived weakness for the woman he loves made him lose his fight. On paper it all looks really good and I feel like it probably resonated well with lots of audiences, but I don't know, the "I will do anything for my cause but I can't kill her because I love her" just falls really flat for me.
I'm also just a bit bummed out because at first when he flew into space I thought he was just going to exile himself as some kind of self-punishment. I thought maybe he'd return in the sequel with some sort of reformed outlook and maybe face consequences for murdering Ajak and fighting his family. Unlike some "redeemed" characters (Kyle Ron comes to mind here) he actually had a basis for a believable redemption and I liked him enough on screen to want to see it.
(Also my stupid shipper brain immediately saw Sersi and Dane as the superior couple, but figured hey, Sersi has two hands. She deserves two boyfriend's to hold them. I hope somebody else with the same brainrot as me writes some Dane/Sersi/Ikaris thruple nonsense, even just a little).
Dane was a fun character, but beyond character himself I was literally just so happy to hear Kit Harrington actually get to speak real dialogue and emote and shout and act like a fucking human being. Three straight seasons of Jon Snow unintelligibly grunting almost had be convinced the man couldn't act at all. Now that I've seen Tobias Menzies in The Crown and Kit Harrington in this, I'm even more retroactively pissed at Game of Thrones for absolutely wasting these actors' potential (and don't even get me started on how badly they wasted Lena Headey in the final season). I'm very excited to see what The Black Knight has to offer us.
Y'all, Gemma Chan is too beautiful for this world. Her cheekbones alone could stop wars. I have a new celebrity crush and she's going to be living rent free in my brain for at least a few months. I love the concept of Sersi's character so much; I love that from the moment she's introduced she's the most human of all the Eternals. Her very first scene is her appreciating how beautiful the earth is. She's the first on the team to get right into human society, learning their languages and helping them with their daily routines. She has a human wedding ceremony. In the present day, she's a teacher with a human boyfriend, and the first thing we see her do with her powers post timeskip is save a child's life and hug her to comfort her after. Throughout her struggles with coming to terms with being Ajak's chosen replacement, she chooses kindness at every possible chance. She doesn't even initially want to kill the celestial that threatens the continued existence of Earth; she just wants to put it to sleep, to avoid being responsible for the murder of what is essentially one of her Gods.
My gripe with Sersi is I feel like she inadvertently becomes the audience surrogate for long stretches of the middle of the film, and we lose her and miss chunks of her arc because she fades into the background. I still don't understand how she turned a deviant into a tree, despite it being the thing that leads her to eventually defeat the celestial by turning it into whatever she turned it into. Her powers are based in matter manipulation but it's almost too vague. I feel like out of all the ensemble cast, Sersi got the least amount of actual growth because so much of her time as the main character was spent providing exposition and being the audience stand-in for understanding the plot. Her talks with Arishem might have been much better as chapters in a book rather than movie scenes. She wasn't boring or non-competing, but she fell flatter to me than the rest of the Eternals and I think that's a disservice to both the character and the actress.
Angie abandoning the interview to say 'hi' to Don Lee. I love how they became friends in the movie. This also says so much how good of a colleague Angie is as opposed to what other TV hosts, Tabloids are saying that she's being a diva.
Eternals. : )
Ah yes, the new series that Marvel is going to capitalise off of for the next decade, probably. Unless maybe people grow a brain that computes beyond pretty graphics. Here's my take on a few things.
SPOILER ALERT: Don't read if you haven't watched and plan to watch Marvel's 2021 movie Eternals.
It's so forced...
As a pure MCU viewer (who has never read the comics), there has literally been no foreshadowing about this important tribe of people. Usually, the MCU's films are all so well-connected that it all feels like they are related in some way, so they appear to happen in the same universe–for example, Shang-Chi's Trevor Slattery character has previously appeared in the Iron Man series. This does not happen in Eternals, making it discordant with the MCU. The story explaining why such a supposedly important and insanely powerful group of people have had 0 traces in the universe (that they're not to "interfere" with human conflict) does not make sense. Some members of the Eternals have expressed the desire to interfere with humans in some way (Druig with his mind control, Phastos with his technology), yet they have had nothing to show after they've been freed from their mission by Ajak. Right, so, Druig practically rebelled and went renegade. Why didn't he help humanity against Thanos? Phastos found new love and a human family. Why did HE help humanity against Thanos, given how he has a family to protect? Most things are contradictory and few make sense.
Also, I have no words for Harry Styles popping in and announcing himself as the brother of Thanos. Just– Just– This is far too sudden and tenuous of a link, like they just threw him in there when they've realised they lack easter eggs to the MCU. I'm not going to count this as a legitimate reference. Plus, this character just feels like he's going to be another Starlord (aka comic relief).
Cliches
GOD there are so many I can't remember them all after watching it once. One particularly painful one was the part when Sprite becomes human. JHSADBFAJKSFNSDJK IT'S CRINGEY JUST THINKING ABOUT IT
What a glaringly obvious Pinocchio syndrome!!! It's also super random–there are plenty other ways to solve Spike's "permanently youthful" problem. Couldn't you have just, like, aged her up???? Make her form adult without taking away her immortality?????? Anything to avoid that stupid trope.
Poor acting / Underutilisation of actors / Destruction of character potential
Don't even get me started on this one. Have you SEEN Ikarus? His acting is firstly so dry he feels like a robot. You can also see that he is a blatant copy of DC characters. He can fly and shoots lazer beams out of his eyes -> Superman. He is a Caucasian male hero turned villain -> Peacemaker (though Peacemaker is more of an anti-hero).
As for Angelina Jolie, she does nothing except sit around and be a dementia patient. She's literally there to give this film clout, nothing else. Unless Marvel is trying to give r e p r e s e n t a t i o n for people with Alzheimer's.
Salma Hayek also got fridged... That killed off allllll of Ajak's potential as a competent female leader (whose role Sirsi DEFINITELY did not live up to. She rarely takes charge to organise the group and sits at the back while Phastos works his brain.). This is also a stupid move for Disney given how hard they are pushing to expand to Spanish-speaking audiences (they're practically specialising in Coco-like films nowadays. Have you seen Encanto by the way?). Salma Hayek would have been a good actress to expand to that market.
A lot of ambition has been placed on this film because of the pressure on Marvel to pump out a cast of new characters because they've been killing off the classic generation. Personally, I feel like the only good thing that has come out of this is Lauren Ridloff as Makkari because she is adorable and the first step towards giving representation for impaired persons.
I always feel kinda bad when people enthusiastically say “Yes Angelina Jolie is so hot! The Maleficent movie is amazing!” shortly after I told them that I like female villains. Because that’s precisely the kind of character or movie I am NOT talking about lol. Rant under the cut.
I like the movie for how it spun a narrative that was born out of very old sexist notions into a more modern and feminist, female centric one. I adore it and I appreciate the movie for this. But the first blow to that is the fact that they had to make Maleficent „Hot“ in order for her to be allowed to get a redemption. She is no longer older, she no longer has a aquiline nose, she no longer has thin lips and so on. And as pretty as Angelina Jolies cheekbones are, they do not make up for the fact that she fits our modern beauty standards perfectly. Which is something that doesn’t only make for a bad implication (for a woman to be redeemable she has to be made prettier) but is also extremely boring to me personally. Or to say it blunt: She looks boring to me and I’m not at all attracted to her (something something everyone looks sterile, in a world where beauty is the norm „ugliness“ becomes divine etc etc).
And there is the thing that I just like evil women. I like women who are evil for no reason. Or evil because they want power. Or who have a sob story but arent redeemable at all. I don’t need a sob story, I don’t need a redemption. Give me female monsters and purely evil women filled with hatred. That’s a personal preference of course but I’m so bored with the trend of making well known villains seem more likeable or misunderstood and I think it’s objectively bad to some degree because it’s so unoriginal and cheap.
I also hate the implication that people who do evil always have to be evil because of trauma. That’s such a bullshit narrative and if you look into the data regarding “real” evil you will find that most “evil” people are often times just privileged, have a secure living situation (which makes “bad” acts more risk less) and act on opportunity. It’s more complex than that of course and there are examples of traumatised people becoming “evil” but the new woke Hollywood narrative of “if they are evil they must have been the victim :(” is just braindead. Especially for a character like Maleficent who was a wonderful example for someone just drunk on power. A kind of villain I love for exactly the fact that they are evil because THEY CAN.
And yes. Stories like „Maleficent“ have value (as I said above). Female trauma, female friendship and all that. But why do they have to take pre existing characters, change them beyond recognition? Why not create an original story with original characters? The story and characters are already so far removed from their original. And yes, of course I know they are doing it because they are making more money if they slap a well known name onto it and recycle something everyone already knows.
So in conclusion: Angelina Jolies Maleficent isn’t attractive to me and I like my villains horrible.
Also: Eleanor Audley is like 89% of the reason why I think the original Maleficent is hot.
Smokey brand Movie Reviews: Mad Weary
I was never on board for an Eternals film. I always thought it mad more sense to make an Inhumans movie. People know the Inhumans. They have stories. There characters are iconic. Karnak. Medusa. Crystal. Blackbolt. These are names, characters recognizable by the casual. Feige thought otherwise. Admittedly, the Eternals are cool in concept. They have intriguing power sets and, of course, that old school, Jack Kirby, Fourth World charm. What they don’t have is f*cking stories to adapt. Every Eternal narrative in the comics is terrible. All of them except for one. What the f*ck could they possibly use to make a compelling film? Well, the thing is out on VOD and i finally got a chance to check it out. Is it as bad as everyone wants me to believe or is there something there most people missed? I had to know for myself so i spent the to and a half hours checking it out.
The Good
This film is f*cking gorgeous. I love every design choice in it. I love how the Deviants look and move. I love how the Eternals us their powers. I love their costumes and all of the scenes set in the past. This thing is easily one of the best looking films in the MCU slate to date.
The direction of this thing i on point. I’m actually surprised because this isn’t Chloe Zhao’s usual fare. That chick is a prestige director and looks to make films specifically to win awards. I hear that’s hat Feige wanted and, admittedly, the direction is sharp enough to make that happen. Unfortunately, the film gets in the way of itself and takes dulls a lot of that shine.
I rather enjoyed this cast. There are, of course, standouts but, for the most part. Everyone does an admirable job in their respective roles. Salma Hayek is pretty good as a more motherly Ajak; A stark contrast to the aloof dickery of her comic book counterpart. I enjoyed Richard Madden’s take on Ikaris. His character felt the most accurate to the source material. I loved Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman and wanted so much more of that guy. Don Lee was exceptional as Gilgamesh and it sucks he was the second of the only two Eternals to bite it. It’s always dope seeing Brian Tyree Henry in anything but his Phastos is up there for me in terms of his performances. I mean, it ain’t Paperboy but it’s still really good. Gemma Chan’s Sersi has potential. There’s something there, i just wish she was allowed to she more of it. I also kind of feel the same way abut Thena, Angelina Jolie’s character. It feels like there is much more for her to do, much more for us to experience just below the surface. Now, it’s time to get into my favorite characters.
Harish Patel as Kingo’s valet, Karun, is the MVP of this flick. I loved this guy! Speaking off...
Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo is a f*cking stud. This dude was stealing every scene he was in. A lot of people focused on his unnerving physical transformation for this role, and was drinking all of the HGH-Steroid flavored, protein shakes, but he’s really good in this role. Shame he jut up and f*cking leaves just as the climax begins. F*cking cock tease, that one.
Lauren Ridloff speeds by as Makkari and she stole my heart along the way. I adored this character, man. She was so full of energy and, for someone who is deaf and doesn’t speak, said so much, with all of the passion. She was a real treat to see and, my goodness, did they realize her powers dope. Makkari is easily the best looking Speedster to make t to film to date.
I can’t talk about Makkari without mentioning Druig, played to the perfect, caustic, abrasive pitch, by Barry Keoghan. This dude is something special and i look forward to what he has in the pipeline next. Considering the rumor mill is saying he’s the next Joker, I'm all for that sh*t.
Seriously, my favorite thing about this movie is the relationship Druig and Makkari share. I can't tell if it's romantic but it's definitely very deep and very passionate. It's definitely a love. Druig is so cold toward everyone else but is an absolute teddy bear for Makkari and it's adorable.
The Meh
So much waste in this flick, man. Salma Hayek? Wasted. Bill Skarsgard? Wasted. Kit Harington? Criminally wasted. That last one hurt because Jon Snow is really f*cking likable in this thing, man. Honestly, if you’re not Gemma Chan, you didn’t have enough time in this flick to really leave an impression. Well, at least, a good one. Sprite is in this movie and i will get to her, trust me. Meanwhile...
You see a lot of Sersi in this and, as hard as it is for me to say this because she is my favorite Eternal in the books, she kind of sucks. It’s weird to see because it’s very obvious Sersi is the main character but she never really feels like it? Like, i went on this journey with her for to and a half hours but i still know absolutely nothing about the character or her personality. I was shown nothing and told everything so it feels hollow. She feels hollow. How the f*ck is the main character of your origin film, your introduction to the audience, a nothingbuger? It’s not really a problem if you just go into this thing as a “blockbuster”experience” or whatever but i can’t do that. I don’t think Feige or Zhao want you to do that so this is a whole f*cking problem.
A lot of these cats are a little too melodramatic. It feels like Zhao was trying to force Nomadland into an MCU box and certain actors responded accordingly. To the detriment of the film. I think that might have something to do with the writing, though, because that sh*t i trash. Zhao doesn’t understand these types of films and it really shows, which is weird because this thing is really well directed. How does that happen? I mean, Zhao wrote this cluster so you’d think the story would be on point, or at least as good as the direction, right?
The Bad
I hate the tone of this film. It doesn’t feel like an MCU movie. Sh*t is trying to be more than that but fails miserably and ends up being so much less. This thing plays like a DCEU flick and not something post-Endgame that Marvel would make.
There’s way too much going on in this thing to be coherent. There’s too many characters and that really hurts the narrative. This sh*t is all over the place and has to force certain things for plot convenience. It’s covered up by slick effect and dope set pieces but, if you’re paying attention, you can see the very obvious compromises.
Why the f*ck was Kro even in this thing? F*cking wasted potential, man. That character could have been ANY Deviant so why Kro?
This sh*t is LONG, man, and you f*cking feel it. There are all sorts of pacing issues and it drags way more than it should. You feel every second of that two and a half hour rut time.
Why the love triangle? One side of this thing was only in the movie for, like, ten minutes. Why the f*ck would you even push that? Sh*t is wholly unnecessary and absolutely detracts from what could have been decent character development.
The Celestials look like dog sh*t. i love so much of this film’s aesthetic but these thing look like hot donkey diarrhea. The one we saw in Guardians was much better.
Sprite is terrible. People like to give child actors a pass because they’re kids but Lia McHugh is bad at her job, man. She doesn’t understand how to portray emotion properly. It’s weird to see. I know she knows what she’s supposed to do, that much i can see in her performance, but i don’t think she has the range to do it so it comes across as just bad. Especially put up against this cast of vets. She’s the worst thing about this entire f*cking movie.
The Verdict
Marvel’s Eternals is a weird experience, man. It’s definitely not as bad as everyone says but, at the same time, not very good. There are a lot of strong performances and some of he worst I've seen in the MCU. It feels epic as sh*t but, simultaneously, frustratingly small. This thing is absolutely f*cking gorgeous and then there’s Pip. This movie is a vexing micture contradiction of mediocrity and exceptionalism. Like, there are intriguing sequences and relationships that, if we got to see just a little bit more, would be dope as f*ck. Gilgamesh and Thena. Makkari and Druig. Sprite's unrequited love for Ikaris. Why Kingo is such a f*cking fanboy. All of this is rich, fertile ground for exploration. Instead, we get passing acknowledgment of this sh*t in favor of a half-assed love triangle where one side isn't even in the f*cking movie. It's so goddamn frustrating because i can SEE a great, emotional, consequential film between the scenes we were given.
Like, the movie we got is pedestrian as f*ck but the movie it wanted to be, is Infinity War levels of excellent. There is a good movie here and i can see it, just under the surface, but what we got is not that. It’s not good but it’s not bad either. It's stuck in this limbo of meh. Middling with spikes of incredible but wholly unnecessary. Who’s this movie for? What’ the point of blowing the Celestial load so soon into Phase Four? Why amass such a strong ensemble only to kneecap them with sub par material to perform? I sat through two and a half hours of a first draft script, or at least that’s what it felt like. Ultimately, Marvel’s Eternals is not the prestige flick Feige wanted it to be and is more in line with the middle-of-the-pack MCU entries. Maybe the next one will be better, maybe it won’t. All i know is, unless you're a die hard fan of the MCU or a completionist, you can skip this one. Nothing of value will be lost.
Sooooo I just rewatched Gia and the sadness has invaded me, for some reason I had completely forgotten the second half of the movie so I didn't remember a thing about her getting aids and ultimately dying from it. I just remembered her in that red dress and then ODing during that shooting as the final scene and I don't know where that memory comes from. Although it is tremendously sad and dramatic I'd still classify it as a comfort movie of mine for unknown motives, I just can't help but feel that heart wrenching stuff whenever I watch it, though I don't do it often. Angelina Jolie is so incredibly good in this, she's what makes this a masterpiece. Whoever says Angelina Jolie can't act needs to get their eyes and ears and brain checked and also I wanna say how moving her relationship with Linda is, she's such an adorable yet burdened character with her love for Gia and for her work but also her worry about drugs and dealing with a significant other who has an addiction.
