There was a new LGBT+ acronym, and it was twig etc. (it had to be in lowercase for some reason). It stood for trans, Welsh, intersex, and gay. Everyone else was etc. It was very controversial.

plagues history and global epidemiology as an autistic special interest was already a heavy topic but not a day goes by I dont briefly recall drunkenly telling people at the bar in autumn 2019 “yeah the next pandemic will probably be a coronavirus and we’re due for one”
if they remember that i have to wonder if they think they met the devil at the club that night

percy has been called smart by hazel, reyna, and annabeth (twice).
to say he’s actually dumb is to disagree with those three women. and if you are disagreeing with 3 of the most knowledgeable, capable, and badass characters in the series… what are you even doing?

Someone: Who’s your favourite Percy Jackson character?
Me: Obviously it’s Annabeth Chase
Someone: that’s such a basic answer.
Me: alright you want the real answer? The prophetic arrow in Trials of Apollo that only Lester can hear and only speaks Shakespeare. Look it up. That’s my favourite character.

You can pry the “goofy character is actually quite intelligent and/or capable/skilled at key moments of crisis” trope from my cold dead hands

Watching All of Us Are Dead (spoils)
After Gyeong-su, Joonyoung’s death hit the hardest so far…
Dude got bit helping the girl he’d just been arguing with and realising he’d have to sacrifice himself for the team.
So he jumps out and starts yanking zombies off of their barrier and tries to get it moving all while being swarmed by zombies.
It creates such a contrast to the start of the show where everyone would furiously deny having been bit to watching Gyeong-su being the first to decide to leave upon realising he was infected in order to keep from biting his friends and people now accepting their fate and doing what they need to do to help the others.
But the last bit where he says “Let’s go home everyone” oh god it hit so hard.

Absolutely AMAZING response by Watcher imo.
They acknowledged that they made a mistake, made the wider context more clear, and addressed basically all of the criticisms brought forward by the community as far as I know.
Anyone who already subscribed to the streaming service who no longer wants it gets a refund.
Patrons get a free subscription to the streaming service.
The service now only offers early, ad-free episodes that will still be released on YouTube.
They acknowledged the insensitivity of the original pitch and how the price is not something that everyone can afford.
THIS is how you respond to backlash, especially this widespread. Take time to collect your thoughts, take the criticism into account, and change your actions going forward.
Great job Watcher 👏

more hours have passed since the watcher streamer announcement and i shouldn't have gone on twitter because the way people are talking about steven lim is pissing me off. just because you lot like ryan and shane more doesn't mean that y'all can say any damn thing about steven like wtf is this
Tumblr media
REALLY??? a guy who sacrificed his own creative output to take on the financial responsibility for a company with two co-founders who categorically did not want to deal with the money side of things (all things that three of them have confirmed on camera during one of the making watcher episodes) is equivalent to a Yale jackass who cheated on his wife and let down his business partners? y'all have lost the plot.
choosing to limit your own creative projects and getting your hands dirty with the most stressful part of the job -making ends meet for your company and making it survive - so that your other two business partners can make the content they like to their heart's content is the kind of sacrifice that would put most of you in a grave. fuck off.
don't make this a "steven lim is a villain" thing. you're allowed to be upset at the announcement but pinning the anger on steven is unfair and unmerited.

sorry to like, keep going on about this but as a (former?) media professional: seeing so many comments on @wearewatcher's video saying "I would fire people so I didn't have to charge for content" and accusing WATCHER of being capitalist about it is actually insane.
you used to have to pay for content. you had to pay like £16 to watch one whole movie on DVD. this is because it cost money to make and people were supposed to be paid for it. remember the writers' strike because streaming now only benefits executives with no equanimous income distribution model for the people who create the stuff you love?
you are meant to root for the independent creators. you are not meant to want all content to be beholden to an algorithmic nightmare that ransoms what creators can make or monetise for its own arbitrary censorship. you are not meant to root for a platform that works to silence and limit people under oppressive regimes. you are not meant to demand that you get content only on something that platforms and promotes right wing prejudice.
employing people is good!!!!!!! you are meant to want people to be fairly paid for their work even and especially when that work goes into creating things you love and get enrichment from
yes you are also meant to share your subscription with your friends. OUR login details. THAT'S fucking socialism.

Putting this comment on here because I feel like I’m actually going insane…
It seems like nobody in the comments even watched the video, complaining about how paying for content is difficult in this economy, like, that's why they are doing this! They cannot continue to make the content they want for free based on ads and sponsors alone. If you have paid attention to the "Making Watcher"s of recent years, their company is not, and has not been profitable. They are so dependent on advertisers for funding that it is becoming a restriction to the content they want to make (y'a know, like Buzzfeed was), so they had to find a solution. I don't know why you all seem to think you are entitled to free content, I understand not everyone can afford it but Watcher doesn't owe you content personally. Frankly, I doubt they wanted to put their content behind a paywall, but if it's that or not make content at all, of course they are going to try to find a solution. So no, they aren't "turning into Buzzfeed” because the massive problem with Buzzfeed was its restrictions on creative freedom and exploitation of its workers. If Watcher wants to produce fulfilling content that gives their editors, designers, producers, etc full creative freedom and a livable wage, this is the best option. If you want them to pay their workers the bare minimum and tailor their content to advertiser interests just so you can watch it for free, that's fine. Just don't pretend that they are some evil media mega-corporation and you are the anti-capitalist shining hero for saying it. You don't have to like it, and you don't have to continue to support them, but don't try to shame and demonize them for making an already difficult decision.
Many of you DO have an understanding of the difficult position our current economic system puts people in because you have experienced it, but you are so unable to extend that understanding beyond your own point of view. Look past yourself for a moment and think critically, and maybe you will understand their perspective. Much love for all of the talented people within Watcher who are doing their best.
And just to add, their format going forward is almost IDENTICAL to CollegeHumor-Dropout's streaming service format (even down to the free premieres and advocating for sharing accounts with friends), which most people praise to high heaven as "the only ethical streaming service." As a huge fan of both companies the stark difference in response here is actually astounding...

Hey maybe a group of creatives deciding that they want control over their content and don't want to waste time and resources begging for ad revenue is like. A good thing
