historical fiction is just fanfiction of history, change my mind
I’m currently reading “Narrating the Past - Historiography, Memory and the
Contemporary Novel ” by Alan Robinson for my thesis and in the chapter “The Historical Turn in Fiction”, he talks about the work processes and limitations of a historical fiction writer and all I can think of is:
The historical fiction writer treats historical canon like a fanfiction writer treats the canon of the media they’re writing about. They can be canon-compliant and canon-divergent and the writer either way has to invent events, characters etc. that didn’t exist in the canon.
My thesis is about Ken Follett’s “A Column of Fire” and honestly? It’s basically a Gary Stu-self-insert Elizabethan era AU James Bond fanfiction. All (main) OCs are causing historical events (e.g. The Gunpowder Plot and its revelation, the Monteagle letter, the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre) and the Gary Stu self-insert never really fails at anything, reveals all real historical plots against his monarch and is loved/respected or feared by significant historical figures...
