Best of Sundance 2021.
From pandemic-era stories, via portraits of grief, to the serendipitous 1969 trilogy, the Letterboxd crew recaps our favorite films from the first major festival of the year.
Sundance heralds a new season of storytelling, with insights into what’s concerning filmmakers at present, and what artistic innovations may be on the horizon. As with every film festival, there were spooky coincidences and intersecting themes, whether it was a proliferation of pandemic-era stories, or extraordinary portraits of women working through grief (Land, Hive, The World to Come), or the incredible serendipity of the festival’s ‘1969 trilogy’, covering pivotal moments in Black American history: Summer of Soul (...Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), Judas and the Black Messiah and the joyful Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street.
The hybrid model of this year’s Sundance meant more film lovers across the United States—a record number of you, in fact—‘attended’ the prestigious indie showcase. Our Festiville team (Gemma Gracewood, Aaron Yap, Ella Kemp, Selome Hailu, Jack Moulton and Dominic Corry) scanned your Letterboxd reviews and compared them with our notes to arrive at these seventeen feature-length documentary and narrative picks from Sundance 2021. There are plenty more we enjoyed, but these are the films we can’t stop thinking about.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) Directed by Ahmir-Khalib Thompson (AKA Questlove)
One hot summer five decades ago, there was a free concert series at a park in Harlem. It was huge, and it was lovely, and then it was forgotten. The Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969 brought together some of the world’s most beloved Black artists to connect with Black audiences. The star power and the size of the crowds alone should have been enough to immortalize the event à la Woodstock—which happened the same summer, the film emphasizes. But no one cared to buy up the footage until Ahmir-Khalib Thompson, better known as Questlove, came along.
It would have been easy to oversimplify such a rich archive by stringing together the performances, seeking out some talking heads, and calling it a day. But Questlove was both careful and ebullient in his approach. “Summer of Soul is a monumental concert documentary and a fantastic piece of reclaimed archived footage. There is perhaps no one better suited to curate this essential footage than Questlove, whose expertise and passion for the music shines through,” writes Matthew on Letterboxd. The film is inventive with its use of present interviews, bringing in both artists and attendees not just to speak on their experiences, but to react to and relive the footage. The director reaches past the festival itself, providing thorough social context that takes in the moon landing, the assassinations of Black political figures, and more. By overlapping different styles of documentary filmmaking, Questlove’s directorial debut embraces the breadth and simultaneity of Black resilience and joy. A deserving winner of both the Grand Jury and Audience awards (and many of our unofficial Letterboxd awards). —SH

Flee Directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen
Flee is the type of discovery Sundance is designed for. Danish documentarian Jonas Poher Rasmussen tells the poignant story of his close friend and former classmate (using the pseudonym ‘Amin Nawabi’) and his daring escape from persecution in 1990s Afghanistan. Rasmussen always approaches tender topics with sensitivity and takes further steps to protect his friend’s identity by illustrating the film almost entirely in immersive animation, following in the footsteps of Waltz With Bashir and Tower. It’s a film aware of its subjectivity, allowing the animated scenes to alternate between the playful joy of nostalgia and the mournful pain of an unforgettable memory. However, these are intercepted by dramatic archive footage that oppressively brings the reality home.
“Remarkably singular, yet that is what makes it so universal,” writes Paul. “So many ugly truths about the immigration experience—the impossible choices forced upon people, and the inability to really be able to explain all of it to people in your new life… You can hear the longing in his voice, the fear in his whisper. Some don’t get the easy path.” Winner of the World Cinema (Documentary) Grand Jury Prize and quickly acquired by Neon, Flee is guaranteed to be a film you’ll hear a lot about for the rest of 2021. —JM

Taming the Garden Directed by Salomé Jashi
There’s always a moment at a film festival when fatigue sets in, when the empathy machine overwhelms, and when I hit that moment in 2021, I took the advice of filmmaker and Sundance veteran Jim Cummings, who told us: “If you’re ever stressed or tired, watch a documentary to reset yourself.” Taming the Garden wasn’t initially on my hit-list, but it’s one of those moments when the ‘close your eyes and point at a random title’ trick paid off. Documentary director Salomé Jashi does the Lorax’s work, documenting the impact and grief caused by billionaire former Georgian PM Bidzina Ivanishvili’s obsession with collecting ancient trees for his private arboretum.
“A movie that is strangely both infuriating and relaxing” writes Todd, of the long, locked-off wide shots showing the intense process of removing large, old trees from their village homes. There’s no narration, instead Jashi eavesdrops on locals as they gossip about Ivanishvili, argue about whether the money is worth it, and a feisty, irritated 90-year-old warns of the impending environmental fallout. “What you get out of it is absolutely proportional to what you put into it,” writes David, who recommends this film get the IMAX treatment. It’s arboriculture as ASMR, the timeline cleanse my Sundance needed. The extraordinary images of treasured trees being barged across the sea will become iconic. —GG

The Most Beautiful Boy in the World Directed by Kristian Petri and Kristina Lindström
Where Taming the Garden succeeds through pure observation, The Most Beautiful Boy in the World relies on the complete participation of its title subject, actor Björn Andrésen, who was thrust into the spotlight as a teenager. Cast by Italian director Lucino Visconti in Death in Venice, a 1971 adaptation of Thomas Mann’s novella about obsession and fatal longing, Andrésen spent the 1970s as an object of lust, with a side-gig as a blonde pop star in Japan, inspiring many manga artists along the way.
As we know by now (Alex Winter’s Showbiz Kids is a handy companion to this film), young stardom comes at a price, one that Andrésen was not well-placed to pay even before his fateful audition for Visconti. But he’s still alive, still acting (he’s Dan in Midsommar), and ready to face the mysteries of his past. Like Benjamin Ree’s excellent The Painter and the Thief from last year, this documentary is a constantly unfolding detective story, notable for great archive footage, and a deep kindness towards its reticent yet wide-open subject. —GG

All Light, Everywhere Directed by Theo Anthony
Threading the blind spots between Étienne-Jules Marey’s 19th-century “photographic rifle”, camera-carrying war pigeons and Axon’s body-cam tech, Theo Anthony’s inquisitive, mind-expanding doc about the false promise of the all-seeing eye is absorbing, scary, urgent. It’s the greatest Minority Report origin story you didn’t know you needed.
Augmented by Dan Deacon’s electronic soundscapes and Keaver Brenai’s lullingly robotic narration, All Light, Everywhere proves to be a captivating, intricately balanced experience that Harris describes as “one part Adam Curtis-esque cine-essay”, “one part structural experiment in the vein of Koyaanisqatsi” and “one part accidental character study of two of the most familiar yet strikingly unique evil, conservative capitalists…”. Yes, there’s a tremendous amount to download, but Anthony’s expert weaving, as AC writes, “make its numerous subjects burst with clarity and profundity.” For curious cinephiles, the oldest movie on Letterboxd, Jules Jenssen’s Passage de Vénus (1874), makes a cameo. —AY

The Sparks Brothers Directed by Edgar Wright
Conceived at a Sparks gig in 2017 upon the encouragement of fellow writer-director Phil Lord, Edgar Wright broke his streak of riotous comedies with his first (of many, we hope) rockumentary. While somewhat overstuffed—this is, after all, his longest film by nearly fifteen minutes—The Sparks Brothers speaks only to Wright’s unrestrained passion for his art-pop Gods, exploring all the nooks and crannies of Sparks’ sprawling career, with unprecedented access to brothers and bandmates Ron and Russell Mael.
Nobody else can quite pin them down, so Wright dedicates his time to put every pin in them while he can, building a mythology and breaking it down, while coloring the film with irresistible dives into film history, whimsically animated anecdotes and cheeky captions. “Sparks rules. Edgar Wright rules. There’s no way this wasn’t going to rule”, proclaims Nick, “every Sparks song is its own world, with characters, rules, jokes and layers of narrative irony. What a lovely ode to a creative partnership that was founded on sticking to one’s artistic guns, no matter what may have been fashionable at the time.” —JM
Narrative features
Tumblr media
The Pink Cloud Written and directed by Iuli Gerbase
The Pink Cloud is disorienting and full of déjà vu. Brazilian writer-director Iuli Gerbase constructs characters that are damned to have to settle when it comes to human connection. Giovana and Yago’s pleasant one-night stand lasts longer than expected when the titular pink cloud emerges from the sky, full of a mysterious and deadly gas that forces everyone to stay locked where they stand. Sound familiar? Reserve your groans—The Pink Cloud wasn’t churned out to figure out “what it all means” before the pandemic is even over. Gerbase wrote and shot the film prior to the discovery of Covid-19.
It’s “striking in its ability to prophesize a pandemic and a feeling unknown at the time of its conception. What was once science fiction hits so close now,” writes Sam. As uncanny as the quarantine narrative feels, what’s truly harrowing is how well the film predicts and understands interiorities that the pandemic later exacerbated. Above all, Giovana is a woman with unmet needs. She is a good partner, good mother and good person even when she doesn’t want to be. Even those who love her cannot see how their expectations strip her of her personhood, and the film dares to ask what escape there might be when love itself leaves you lonely. —SH
Tumblr media
Together Together Written and directed by Nikole Beckwith
Every festival needs at least one indie relationship dramedy, and Together Together filled that role at Sundance 2021 with a healthy degree of subversion. It follows rom-com structure while ostensibly avoiding romance, instead focusing on how cultivating adult friendships can be just hard, if not harder.
Writer-director Nikole Beckwith warmly examines the limits of the platonic, and Patti Harrison and Ed Helms are brilliantly cast as the not-couple: a single soon-to-be father and the surrogate carrying his child. They poke at each other’s boundaries with a subtle desperation to know what makes a friendship appropriate or real. As Jacob writes: “It’s cute and serious, charming without being quirky. It’s a movie that deals with the struggle of being alone in this world, but offers a shimmer of hope that even if you don’t fall in fantastical, romantic, Hollywood love… there are people out there for you.” —SH
Tumblr media
Hive Written and directed by Blerta Basholli
Hive, for some, may fall into the “nothing much happens” slice-of-life genre, but Blerta Basholli’s directorial debut holds an ocean of pain in its small tale, asking us to consider the heavy lifting that women must always do in the aftermath of war. As Liz writes, “Hive is not just a story about grief and trauma in a patriarchy-dominated culture, but of perseverance and the bonds created by the survivors who must begin to consider the future without their husbands.”
Yllka Gashi is an understated hero as Fahrjie, a mother-of-two who sets about organizing work for the women of her village, while awaiting news of her missing husband—one of thousands unaccounted for, years after the Kosovo War has ended. The townsmen have many opinions about how women should and shouldn’t mourn, work, socialize, parent, drive cars and, basically, get on with living, but Fahrjie persists, and Basholli sticks close with an unfussy, tender eye. “It felt like I was a fly on the wall, witnessing something that was actually happening,” writes Arthur. Just as in Robin Wright’s Land and Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come, Hive pays off in the rare, beaming smile of its protagonist. —GG

On the Count of Three Directed by Jerrod Carmichael, written by Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch
It starts with an image: two best friends pointing guns at each other’s heads. There’s no anger, there’s no hatred—this is an act of merciful brotherly love. How do you have a bleak, gun-totin’ buddy-comedy in 2021 and be critically embraced without contradicting your gun-control retweets or appearing as though your film is the dying embers of Tarantino-tinged student films?
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael’s acerbic directorial debut On the Count of Three achieves this by calling it out every step of the way. Guns are a tool to give insecure men the illusion of power. They are indeed a tool too terrifying to trust in the hands of untrained citizens. Carmichael also stars, alongside Christopher Abbott, who has never been more hilarious or more tragic, bringing pathos to a cathartic rendition of Papa Roach’s ‘Last Resort’. Above all, Carmichael and Abbott’s shared struggle and bond communicates the millennial malaise: how can you save others if you can’t save yourself? “Here’s what it boils down to: life is fucking hard”, Laura sums up, “and sometimes the most we can hope for is to have a best friend who loves you [and] to be a best friend who loves. It doesn’t make life any easier, but it sure helps.” Sundance 2021 is one for the books when it comes to documentaries, but On the Count of Three stands out in the fiction lineup this year. —JM
Tumblr media
Censor Directed by Prano Bailey-Bond, written by Bailey-Bond and Anthony Fletcher
The first of several upcoming films inspired by the ‘video nasty’ moral panic over gory horror in mid-’80s Britain, Prano Bailey-Bond leans heavily into both the period and the genre in telling the story of a film censor (a phenomenal Niamh Algar—vulnerable and steely at the same time) who begins to suspect a banned movie may hold the key to her sister’s childhood disappearance. Often dreamlike, occasionally phantasmagorical and repeatedly traumatic, even if the worst gore presented (as seen in the impressively authentic fictional horrors being appraised) appears via a screen, providing a welcome degree of separation.
Nevertheless, Censor is definitely not for the faint of heart, but old-school horror aficionados will squeal with delight at the aesthetic commitment. “I’m so ecstatic that horror is in the hands of immensely talented women going absolutely batshit in front of and behind the camera.” writes Erik. (Same here!) “A great ode to the video-nasty era and paying tribute to the great horror auteurs of the ’80s such as Argento, De Palma and Cronenberg while also doing something new with the genre. Loved this!” writes John, effectively encapsulating Censor’s unfettered film-nerd appeal. —DC
Tumblr media
CODA Written and directed by Siân Heder
A film so earnest it shouldn’t work, with a heart so big it should surely not fit the size of the screen, CODA broke records (the first US dramatic film in Sundance history to win all three top prizes; the 25-million-dollar sale to Apple Studios), and won the world over like no other film. “A unique take on something we’ve seen so much,” writes Amanda, nailing the special appeal of Siân Heder’s coming-of-ager and family portrait. Emilia Jones plays Ruby, the only hearing person in her deaf family, at war between the family business and her passion for singing. While Heder is technically remaking the French film La Famille Bélier, the decision to cast brilliant deaf actors—Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant—makes this feel brand new.
But it’s not just about representation for the sake of it. A sense of authenticity, in humor as much as affection, shines through. With a script that’s 40 per cent ASL, so many of the jokes are visual gags, poking fun at Tinder and rap music, but a lot of the film’s most poignant moments are silent as well. And in Ruby’s own world, too, choir kids will feel seen. “I approve of this very specific alto representation and the brilliant casting of the entire choir,” Laura confirms in her review. Come for the fearless, empathetic family portrait, stay for the High School Musical vibes that actually ring true. —EK

We’re All Going to the World’s Fair Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun
Perhaps the most singular addition to the recent flurry of Extremely Online cinema—Searching, Spree, Host, et al—Jane Schoenbrun’s feature debut ushers the viewer into a haunted, hypno-drone miasma of delirium-inducing YouTube time-suck, tenebrous creepypasta lore and painfully intimate webcam confessionals. Featuring an extraordinarily unaffected, fearless performance by newcomer Anna Cobb, the film “unpacks the mythology of adolescence in a way that’s so harrowingly familiar and also so otherworldly”, writes Kristen. Not since Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Pulse has there been such an eerily lonely, and at times strangely beautiful, evocation of the liminal spaces between virtual and real worlds.
For members of the trans community, it’s also a work that translates that experience to screen with uncommon authenticity. “What Schoenbrun has accomplished with the form of We’re All Going to the World’s Fair is akin to catching a wisp of smoke,” writes Willow, “because the images, mood and aesthetic that they have brought to life is one that is understood completely by trans people as one of familiarity, without also plunging into the obvious melodrama, or liberal back-patting that is usually associated with ‘good’ direct representation.” One of the most original, compelling new voices to emerge from Sundance this year. —AY
Tumblr media
Judas and the Black Messiah Directed by Shaka King, written by King, Will Berson, Kenneth Lucas and Keith Lucas
It was always going to take a visionary, uncompromising filmmaker to bring the story of Fred Hampton, the deputy chairman of the national Black Panther Party, to life. Shaka King casts Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton, and LaKeith Stanfield as William “Wild Bill” O’Neal, the FBI informant whose betrayal leads to Hampton’s assassination. Both actors have never been better, particularly Kaluuya who Fran Hoepfner calls “entrancing, magnetic, fizzling, romantic, riveting, endlessly watchable.”
Judas and the Black Messiah is an electric, involving watch: not just replaying history by following a certain biopic template. Instead, it’s a film with something to say—on power, on fear, on war and on freedom. “Shaka King’s name better reverberate through the halls of every studio after this,” writes Demi. A talent like this, capable of framing such a revolution, doesn’t come around so often. We’d better listen up. —EK
Tumblr media
Pleasure Directed by Ninja Thyberg, written by Thyberg and Peter Modestij
A24’s first purchase of 2021. Ironically titled on multiple levels, Pleasure is a brutal film that you endure more than enjoy. But one thing you can’t do is forget it. Ninja Thyberg’s debut feature follows a young Swedish woman (Sofia Kappel) who arrives in Los Angeles with dreams of porn stardom under the name ‘Bella Cherry’. Although Bella is clear-eyed about the business she’s getting into, Thyberg doesn’t shy away from any of the awfulness she faces in order to succeed in an industry rife with exploitation and abuse. Bella does make allies, and the film isn’t suggesting that porn is only stocked with villains, but the ultimate cost is clear, even if it ends on an ever-so-slightly ambiguous note.
Touching as it does on ambition, friendship and betrayal in the sex business, Pleasure is often oddly reminiscent of Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls. Or rather, the gritty film Showgirls was claiming to be, as opposed to the camp classic it became. There’s nothing campy here. Kappel is raw and fearless in the lead, but never lets the viewer lose touch with her humanity. Emma puts it well: “Kappel gives the hardest, most provocative and transfixing performance I’ve seen all festival.” “My whole body was physically tense during this,” writes Gillian, while Keegan perhaps speaks for most when she says “Great film, never want to see it again.” —DC
Tumblr media
Coming Home in the Dark Directed by James Ashcroft, written by Ashcroft and Eli Kent
A family camping trip amidst some typically stunnin—and casually foreboding— New Zealand scenery is upended by a shocking rug-pull of violence that gives way to sustained terror represented by Daniel Gillies’ disturbingly calm psychopath. The set-up of this thriller initially suggests a spin on the backwoods brutality thriller, but as Coming Home in the Dark progresses and hope dissipates, the motivations reveal themselves to be much more personal in nature, and informed on a thematic level by New Zealand’s colonial crimes against its Indigenous population. It’s a stark and haunting film that remains disorientating and unpredictable throughout, repeatedly daring the viewer to anticipate what will happen next, only to casually stomp on each glimmer of a positive outcome.
It’s so captivatingly bleak that a viewing of it, as Collins Ezeanyim’s eloquent reaction points out, does not lend itself to completing domestic tasks. The film marks an auspicious debut for director and co-writer James Ashcroft. Jacob writes that he “will probably follow James Ashcroft’s career to the gates of Hell after this one”. Justin hits the nail on the head with his description: “Lean and exceptionally brutal road/revenge film … that trades in genre tropes, especially those of Ozploitation and ’70s Italian exploitation, but contextualizes them in the dark history of its country of origin.” —DC
Tumblr media
The World to Come Directed by Mona Fastvold, written by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard
Mona Fastvold has not made the first, nor probably the last, period romance about forbidden lesbian love. But The World to Come focuses on a specific pocket in time, a world contained in Jim Shepard’s short story ‘Love & Hydrogen’ from within the collection giving the film its name. Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby are Abigail and Tallie, farming neighbors, stifled by their husbands, who find brief moments of solace, of astonishment and joy, together. What shines here is the script, a verbose, delicate narration that emanates beauty more than pretence. “So beautifully restrained and yet I felt everything,” Iana writes.
And you can feel the fluidity and elegance in the way the film sounds, too: composer Daniel Blumberg’s clarinet theme converses with the dialogue and tells you when your heart can break, when you must pause, when the end is near. “So much heartache. So much hunger. So much longing. Waves of love and grief and love and grief,” writes Claira, capturing the ebb and flow of emotion that keeps The World to Come in your mind long after the screen has gone silent. —EK

Thanks for the prompt, mate, @jb-lh. Sincerely hoping you enjoy this!
Prompt: 46 + “Please don’t say that about yourself. Don’t believe that. You’re so much more than that. You’re so...”
Ship: Thomas x Alastair (Thomastair)
White Tulips and Purple Hyacinths
Ambling through Hyde park with Alastair Carstairs was not what Thomas had expected on a nimble December evening. As such, he was equal parts wary and interested. The London skyline was a melancholy orange blurring against the snow atop trees and buildings. It reminded Thomas of pumpkins covered with cream.
He thrust his fisted hands into his pockets. Silence ensued. “I like blueberries,” Alastair started.
He glanced at the boy next to him. “What?”
Alastair waved his outstretched hand towards a distant tree with budding flowers. There were scars that were beginning to fade on his knuckles, looking elegant on his caramel skin. “Those flowers you see there, they grow into blueberries. I know.”
Thomas looked away, not sure how to respond. Were there blueberry plants in Hyde Park? He decided to say, “I once had a blueberry pastry. It was nice.”
They walked along mutedly, each lost one another’s silence. Thomas felt dreadfully awkward; he should have turned back when he had first noticed Alastair instead of reckoning a conversation. It hadn’t even been him; Alastair had started talking after he’d returned Thomas’s curious yet accidental gaze. Alastair had been by the lake, looking at the ducks forlornly. Did he like ducks?
“You seem to know a lot about flowers,” Thomas ventured finally. He relaxed his fingers in his pocket before adjusting his mittens. Oddly, it struck him only then that Alastair was not donning his gloves. He wasn’t sure what to make of it either. In truth, he had no idea what to make of Alastair at all.
“I do,” Alastair replied, but did not continue. Many moments of silence later, he carried on, “I- when Cordelia and I were children, we grew up in Iran at the Institute.” Thomas looked at him, only to find stagnant brown eyes looking up at him hesitantly. “You would like it there, I think.”
Thomas paused. “I think I would,” he agreed. His interest in history and the slowly growing curiosity towards ancient architecture did lead him to the structural marvels of Persia. He had looked up the books on buildings and the history they contained. London had its fair share of history, but two places were never the same.
“You would,” Alastair confirmed assuredly, his posture and tone changing at the mention of his home. “The lands; every grain of sand in the deserts around, every leaf and flower, each trace of a design and creation has a story. It is life personified. You like history,” he pointed and continued, “you would like Persia.”
“I like history,” he agreed absently. He was more focused on how Alastair’s shoulders had released some tension. “I like languages too. I speak Persian.”
“I know,” he nodded and then froze.
Breeze swayed the trees, gently shaking the leaves that shed their little share of snow. A flew leaves blew into their faces. When they dusted away, there was snow still harbouring the side of Alastair's shining hair.
“Have you read the Rubaiyat?” Thomas asked instead, a little more determined to not let the conversation go astray. Alastair was trying; it wouldn’t harm to see how this discussion could take a different turn. James, surprisingly, was the one to suggest to give Alastair a chance. To tell him that Alastair was indeed trying to mend things. Thomas had then spoken to Cordelia who had only assured to make the choice his.
“Have you forgiven him?”
“I did,” she’d said. “I truly believe my brother is trying to make amends. He has...” Cordelia hesitated. “Thomas, if I tell you something, would you give your word to keep it to yourself?”
When he had promised his assent, Cordelia began to explain the days of desolation that Alastair had spent after returning from the academy. She elaborated on Alastair’s moodiness and withdrawal from reality. How he often resorted to spending his time by himself, making himself unworthy of love and respect and conversation. She mentioned the bruises she had seen along his face and arms as though he had been in battles all day along. Instead, he had been climbing trees, sometimes wielding his spears from the topmost ones as a part of his practice. His aim was very poor, Cordelia had said, much to Thomas’s shock.
“I wish I knew better,” she’d sighed. “He always held darkness in him, and I have come to realise that myself only a few months ago.” With some doubt then, she had further explained the origins of a letter that contained some details that were not Cordelia’s to speak about, a letter about which Alastair had extracted a promise from her.
“I understand,” Thomas sympathized.
“I have not,” Alastair said now, gazing at the flowers around them, “However, I plan to. Cord- Layla gifted a copy of it to me this birthday.” In a soft tone he added, “She wanted- She told me to embrace where I am from and not conceal who I am.”
“Cordelia is wise,” Thomas agreed. “There were moments where a few of my Persian words were smudged by my accent. She offered to correct me. I was glad that she did.”
His companion merely nodded, albeit deftly. Thomas felt his own nerves ease. “Like I mentioned earlier, when we were children growing up in the Institute, we had regal gardens. They are still there and when we frequent it as a vacationing destination, we spend time in the gardens.”
Thomas followed his narrative closely. “Our mother ensured us the knowledge of flowers and their meanings, plants, herbs and the medicinal uses that they can be put to. Cordelia knows them all but I’m afraid I might have forgotten them. We learnt perfumery too.
“I’m ashamed,” he endured. Thomas glanced at him sharply. “Years of my life, I wasted away in hiding- hiding behind insecurity and, uh, and bearing through childhood- and in the process, I have hurt people beyond repair.” Thomas continued to gaze at him, though Alastair did not meet his eyes. Instead, he kept looking ahead, staring off into the distance.
How was he to offer comfort to him here? Thomas looked at the lake and momentarily thought of James. He thought of the kind things he could tell Alastair. However, he was unsure of the meaning and value that Alastair might hold of his words, if Alastair held any.
They trudged in eerie quietude. Songbirds chirped high in the trees, weaving an evening melody. “Cousin Jem told me,” Alastair resumed, “that life offers a second chance to those who ardently seek for it. I do not know why I am telling you this; perhaps I want you to know that my heart weighs down everyday with the guilt I carry for being an arse.” He must have presumed Thomas would laugh at that, but Thomas gave no reply.
He wondered if he could assure him, to tell him to not think or say that about himself, that he was more than that, more than the guilt he carried. Those were the words he would commit to any of his friends with certainty when their esteem fell below their knees. Thomas curled his fingers and relaxed his fists. The words to assure the fellow felt hollow to him; he was desperate to say something, but the wound was still raw. Why hadn’t he turned away? Why did he continue the conversation with him? He wasn’t prepared.
For a briefest moment, Thomas wondered if Alastair really meant his apology, if that even was one. Rage had tore through him for the many months after the confession during Cordelia’s engagement. Now he only felt numb and empty.
Despite the assurances he had about Alastair from his friends, he was uncertain about what to think of him. The tears that his parents had shed when the rumour began to devour their family was vivid in his memory. It was the first time he had seen his father, an excellent, kind and virtuous man, cry. His sisters were pale with anger at the audacity of the Enclave to even partake in such nonsense and his mother had wept, her dignity compromised by mere words. Just a rumour to question years worth of loyalty.
Thomas himself had felt invalidated, but Aunt Tessa’s words were always there for affirmation. He had brushed the rumours off and so had the rest of London eventually. It struck him only then how odd Matthew must have felt when he heard the senseless claims about his father. How Charlotte and Henry had faced their woes. Had there been anybody with whom Matthew had shared his grief? James might know, he thought solemnly, yet his gut nagged no. He didn’t think it was possible that Matthew had shared his pain with someone. The guilt of not being there for his friend began to wreak his heart.
“I- Thomas, I don’t expect you to excuse me. I don’t excuse myself- nor do I expect you to. James did tell me to give you time and I only-” Alastair rambled, stopping to look up and face him. Thomas wondered what his expression conveyed, for Alastair’s face shut up, his form taking on the edge of formality. “It is growing dark,” he declared. “I must leave. It was pleasant seeing you, Lightwood.”
Thomas wasn’t sure what had prompted him thought his hands moved on their own. He held his hand out forth, as if meaning to shake. “Farewell,” he said stonily. Alastair nodded curtly and they parted ways.
Later that evening as night fell over London, Sophie called Thomas to the parlour. He had been looking for more information about Belial, jotting his observations in a notebook he liked to maintain once a moon. Watching Christopher record his observations had encouraged him to write his own thoughts and discoveries down. “These came for you, mi hijo,” his mother said, ruffling his hair with her tired hands when he entered.
Thomas crossed the room towards the contents on the table. On it was a small bouquet of white tulips and purple hyacinths. Inscribed on the small card that came with the flowers were Persian words. They were easy for Thomas to read: the dedication of the Rubaiyat.
White tulips and purple hyacinths denote seeking forgiveness.
Thank you so much for reading!

He’s A Tattoo Artist ~ Min Yoongi
Prompts: 14, 22, 27
Tumblr media
The sound of the door opening made the dark-haired boy jump, as he looked up from his sketchpad, noticing your timid frame walk into his parlour. He smiled softly, tucking his hands into the pocket of his apron, switching his computer on.
“Hello,” you smiled, instantly nervous. The parlour was decorated mainly in black, with portraits of his pieces scattered around the place. “I’ve got an appointment at two with Yoongi.”
“That would be me,” he responded, closing his laptop back down, opening one of the drawers. He pulled out the template the two of you had discussed over the phone. “I’m sorry, what was your name again?”
“Y/N.”
His smile grew, “that’s it, I remember.”
He laid the piece out, a simple floral design that you wanted on your left hip. A tattoo had been something you’d considered for a while, and after a drunken night out, had somehow booked the appointment, leaving yourself no choice but to see it through.
Your eyes lit up as you saw the masterpiece he had created, excited to see what it looked like on you. “If you like it, we can head to the back and get started?”
“Yeah, sounds good.”
You were trying your best to hide your nerves as you followed beside him, sitting down in a big black chair. You lifted your jumper up as he placed latex gloves on, sliding a set of drawers over with several different colours of ink on.
“I’m guessing by the look on your face, this is your first tattoo. Am I right?”
“Yeah,” you shyly giggled, “I’m trying to hide my nerves, but clearly I’m not doing a very good job. I know I’ll be in safe hands with you.”
“Of course, you will, I promise to take extra care of you.” His encouragement made you feel a little bit happier, but you were still filled with concern. “Can I get you a drink or anything?”
You shook your head, all you wanted was the experience to be over and done with. “Can we just get on with things instead before I end up running back out of the door.”
“I’m just going to make myself a coffee, then I’ll be back. This one may take a while.”
You watched him walk down a flight of stairs, looking around the studio. A piece at the back caught your eye, a large cartoon character had been tattooed onto someone’s back. You couldn’t believe how real it looked as you took a few steps towards it, admiring the great detail that had been encompassed into it.
“I can see you, you’re terrible at hiding,” a voice spoke, making you jump.
“I wasn’t running away, just admiring all the work you’ve done.”
Everything had been built from nothing, Yoongi had worked hard to fulfil his dreams of becoming a tattooist. He wanted his own place, where he could showcase his own work, and he’d certainly found it here.
“It always makes me smile when people like what I do. It’s rewarding to the smiles on happy customers once the see their tattoo.”
You watched through scrunched eyes as he began to prepare for your tattoo. You lifted your jumper back up, watching as he sterilized the area. The harsh cold of what he used made you jump, as he sniggered. He shot you a childish glare, knowing that he was definitely going to have trouble with you.
Then he placed his stencil, again making you jump as you felt the cold of his hands tickle against your skin. “Stop whining like a baby and get on with it, this is the easiest bit,” he teased.
“You’re supposed to make me feel better, not worse. I’m scared, the sounds, the feels, this is like my worst nightmare,” you chuckled, slowly realising what you’d gotten yourself into.
“What on earth are you doing here in that case?”
“Let’s just say sober Y/N certainly hates drunk Y/N right about now.” His eyes rolled; you definitely were not the first accidental drunk customer he’d had in the studio.
Once he was happy with everything, and once he’d checked with you one final time that this was what you wanted, did he prepare the tattoo gun. The first time you heard the sound, your heart skipped a bit, it was a lot more intimidating in real life.
“Just stay nice and calm for me,” Yoongi smiled, reassuring you. “It’s going to hurt a bit to begin with, but everyone always says that they adjust to the pain eventually. The less you move, the easier my job is to give you the perfect tattoo.”
“Stop talking and get on with it, please.”
He did as he was told, beginning to tattoo the first of the petals. Your eyes widened in horror at the sensation of the needles going in and out of your skin, too scared to look down, trusting that Yoongi would do things right.
He knew you were nervous; he’d had plenty of nervous customers before, and he knew the only way to make things better would be work as fast as possible. Whilst remaining professional, he didn’t want to put you in agony for too long.
“How are you doing Y/N? Do you need a break, or shall I carry on?”
You glanced across, looking straight for his eyes, unable to bring yourself to look down at the tattoo. Your shoulders shrugged, unsure what to do.
“Just keep going for now, I’ll let you know if it gets too much,” you informed him.
He nodded, only wanting what was best for you. As he looked down, he knew what a great job he’d done, and it didn’t take long for the rest of the piece to be finished, whilst you sat almost perfectly throughout it all.
“You’ll be pleased to know, I think we’re done,” he smiled, taking his hands out of the gloves.
You let go of a sigh of relief, waiting a moment for him to instruct you on what to do. “I want to say thank you, but a man has never hurt me that way before.”
“Sorry, but I think you’ll be happy with the outcome. He reached across for his hand mirror, “I’ve worked really hard to make it as real as possible, there’s a lot of fine details in there, some bits perhaps most people won’t notice.”
“I’m so ready to see it, turn the mirror around.”
He turned the mirror around, as your jaw hit the floor. You were stunned by how incredible it looked; he really had done such an incredible job.
“That’s amazing, I can’t believe how real it looks. I could cry it looks so good, thank you so much, and I’m sorry for being such a problematic customer.”
Seeing the look on your face was all he needed to know he had yet another happy customer. “My heart just melted, you’re so damn cute. It was an honour to give you your first tattoo, maybe you’ll be back for more now?”
“No way! Absolutely not. The pain of one was good enough.” He chuckled, wrapping your tattoo to keep it safe, letting you know the dos don’ts for the next day or two to make sure you kept the tattoo in pristine condition.
“I bet so many people come back for more tattoos, you do such a good job. Hypothetically, if I ever got another tattoo, I’d definitely come back here.”
“Hypothetically, I would love that,” Hobi smiled, walking you back through to the main reception. “Now, we paid over the phone, so you don’t need to worry about that, just let me give you a little care package, and then you’re good to go.”
The money was another reason you knew you had to go, Yoongi had asked that you paid the money beforehand, that way if you were unhappy for any reason, he still got the money. It was smart, or so you thought, until you realised it was yet another reason to go and get the tattoo.
“Take it easy for a while, and make sure next time you get drunk, you don’t decide that getting a tattoo is a good idea,” he teased.
You picked up the care package, throwing it between your hands. “You’ve done an excellent job, but this is definitely a one-time thing. If anything is ever going to make me realize I need to stop drinking, no offence, but this is it.”
“No offence taken,” he chuckled, “I’ll see you around Y/N.”
“Bye.”
You glanced down at the package, noticing a piece of paper slotted in the elastic band keeping it all together. Unfolding it, you couldn’t help but smile as you realised his name and number had been scribbled on the piece of paper.
Perhaps you could let me take you out one day to apologise for all the pain I put you through. Yoongi x

But I Like One Piece (17)
Unsurprisingly, they stay in for the rest of the day.
Naruto and Lee badger her to show them more of the “singy thing language, so she writes out the alphabet for them.
It’s actually a bit difficult to translate individual letters back into the language of this world, which is based on grouping sounds that all involve vowels. The idea of singular consonants without that does take a bit for them to grasp.
Eventually she just grabs paper and some pencil and shows them how to write their names.
Lee’s name is easiest, and he delights in how quickly he masters the curves of the “r” and “e”s to write it out over and over again, each version getting a little bit more of a flourish.
Naruto struggles a bit more with his, given the larger number of letters in both his first and last names and his insistence on trying to write the cross of the “t” and then the stalk, like it’s a hiragana character.
“But why can’t I write it that way?” He whines.
“Because that’s not the way it’s written.” She replies primly, avoiding her mother’s knowing gaze and memories of being gently scolded for writing hiragana characters like they were “t”s.
Years of giving up pudding cups have proven that she’s weak to Naruto’s whining, so eventually she just gives up and lets him write it whatever way he wants to.
It’s not long until the adults join in as well.
Okaa-san’s handwriting is flawless like her calligraphy, producing the most legible iterations of her name once she’s got the spelling down.
Gai-sensei produces the most written versions of his name, though that’s probably her fault for telling him his name could either be spelled G-A-I or G-U-Y. He seems to have decided to claim both spellings for himself, if his dedication to making sure he can write each properly is anything to go by.
Otou-san is just worrying over whether his name looks better with or without the “u” on the end.
Gai-sensei is also very interested in directions as well, for some reason. He makes her go over «left», «right», «up», «down», «behind», «ahead», «go», and «stop» until he, Naruto, and Lee have them all quasi-memorized.
Then her mother asks her about English swear words.
It isn’t until she’s finished running through them all and Okaa-san sweetly says, “If I catch you saying any of those, you’ll be banned from cooking for a week, alright?” that she realizes she’s been tricked.
Otou-san and Gai-sensei are awful at muffling their snickers.
They end up preparing a very late lunch/early dinner.
Turns out divulging her biggest secret and trying to guide her family through the travesty that is the English language is long and hungry work.
A few filets of the lamb come out to rest for an hour, because Naruto asks about some of the dishes from her past life.
While the idea of making a Proper Roast Dinner on her own still turns her stomach, she figures she can at least adapt the meat into the “plate-2-bowls” format.
She crushes a clove of garlic and takes a generous donation from Habu-san to prepare a marinade. “So, any more questions?”
“What kind of training did you do in your Springtime of Youth?” Lee asks, eagerly.
She feels sweat trickle down the side of her face as she finishes marinating the meat and sets it aside to rest before grilling. “Ah, not much really. I was more the... scholarly type—I’d rather have my nose in a book than do much physical activity.”
The thought of her past self trying to tackle anywhere near the amount of exercise she does now...
“I would die.” She states. “That me would die even trying to do a half-lap around our training field.”
There’s a moment of silence that feels highly judgmental.
“...That’s kinda lame, Mayu-chan.” Naruto says.
“I know.” She hides her face in her marinade-covered hands. “Can we not talk about it please?”
“You were the one who opened the topic of conversation, sweetheart.” Okaa-san says, putting the rice on.
“Regardless of the folly of the past, your determination to fulfill your creed has allowed you to blossomed into the Springtime of your Youth!” Gai-sensei shoots her a thumbs-up and a reassuring beam.
She smiles back weakly as Otou-san starts wiping the bits of rosemary and garlic off her face with a wet cloth and a chuckle.
After the marinade is cleaned off and the meat is grilling, she’s left to puzzle over what side dishes to make.
Traditionally, the lamb would be served with root vegetables—potatoes or turnips or swedes, parsnips roasted in honey—but alongside the rice, that many carbohydrates in one meal would be far too heavy, especially for the others who are used to smaller, more balanced portions.
Just as she’s wondering what to do, a bunch of green onions appears on the counter in front of her.
Her mind ticks over possibilities. They’re not leeks, but maybe roasted and served in miso soup...
She grins and grabs a knife.
The onions are diced into perfectly even rounds, sizzling to a perfectly browned texture before the dashi comes to a boil and tofu is cubed and dropped in alongside the onions and some dried seaweed to mellow the flavor.
Somehow a red cabbage appears under her knife, and is chopped into manageable slivers, joining orange slices without the skin and a light vinaigrette that tastes a little sharp, like lemon, on the plate.
The lamb filets come off the grill, each one a warm pink in the middle when they’re sliced against the grain.
The scent of cigarette smoke is barely noticeable under the delicious smells of food.
The cuts of lamb are arranged against the little piles of salad, the umami of the meat and its marinade balanced by the more refreshing flavors of fresh fruit and vegetables.
The miso barely splashes as she pours it into six bowls, onion and tofu bobbing merrily as she spoons generous portions of rice into the rice bowls.
She turns around, ready to serve—
Only to find the other occupants of the kitchen staring at her, frozen.
Gai-sensei’s mouth is hanging open. Otou-san has a hand on his bokkem.
Lee’s eyes are wide and starry. Naruto’s mouth is curving into an excited grin.
Her mother swallows and takes a breath to compose herself. Her voice is slightly strangled.
“Mayu. Let’s talk about boundaries for y—for those deities to follow when they’re interacting with my little girl, alright?”
A shiver goes down not-her spine at the look in Okaa-san’s eyes.
Late lunch/early dinner is delicious, even with the revelation that she had had help (Sanji’s help!) for cooking a lot of it.
According to Lee and Naruto’s enthusiastic descriptions, he’d actually appeared behind her, washed out and slightly blue and see-through, like an underdeveloped photograph, but there. He’d nudged ingredients towards her, steadied her hands while cutting and pouring, then looked over to them with a press of his fingers to his lips and a wink before vanishing just as she turned around.
She has to cover her face with her hands and turn to the side in her chair so she can kick her legs wildly at the thought of receiving Sanji’s unseen aid, let alone him actually touching her.
Her cheeks feel like they could melt snow, they’re so hot.
Gai-sensei volunteers to search all over Konoha in order to find Sanji for her mother, who is not very happy that the chef escaped before she could Have A Word with him.
To be fair, if she were Sanji, she’d probably run away before her mother could Have A Word with her too.
Lee is also on board with this plan, though both he and Gai-sensei are stumped when Naruto asks where to start looking.
Otou-san suggests they build a shrine for the StrawHats in the back garden.
“After all,” He says, swallowing a bite of lamb. “Providing these deities with a place of worship might help...ground them, somewhat, lessen anything nasty if they’re accidentally offended. It’ll give us a sure way to contact them whenever we want too, rather than just waiting for them to pop up willy-nilly.”
“An excellent idea, Jirou!” Gai-sensei cheers. Her father flushes bright red and shoves more food into his mouth.
On Monday, she goes to the Academy flanked by Naruto and Lee.
The masks are in the branches of practically every tree they pass.
She keeps her gaze on the ground and clutches Lee and Naruto’s hands a little tighter in her own.
Lee doesn’t seem to want to let go when it’s time for them to go to their separate classes. She gives him a hug, and that seems to placate him a little.
Naruto just doesn’t let go.
For the entire morning.
Even when it becomes difficult to write down notes for Iruka-sensei’s lectures, he holds on tight to her hand or her wrist.
She feels a bit bad for feeling grateful when they take their usual places at either end of the lunch table, but she was beginning to get worried he wouldn’t even let go if she needed to use the restroom.
Everything seems to pass as normal, even with Sakura’s strange behavior and Chouji’s continual bouts of summer flu. She’s getting quite worried about his health at this point.
They stay behind after the Academy day ends to ask Iruka-sensei about shrine-building. While he personally doesn’t know much about it, he very helpfully points them towards a few stores that do specialize in that sort of thing.
Okaa-san and Lee are waiting outside the gates to walk them home.
She sleeps in the big bed with Okaa-san and Otou-san like she did over the weekend.
A week goes by.
Nothing out of the ordinary happens.
She trains with Gai-sensei in the mornings, they all eat breakfast together, she, Lee and Naruto go to the Academy, she and Naruto eat with their friends at lunchtime, either Okaa-san or Gai-sensei escort them home, the saga of convincing a store to sell them the components for shrine building continues, they eat dinner together, and she sleeps in the big bed.
The problem isn’t that shrine components aren’t available for sale. They are. There are even little kits for mini home shrines that people can build.
The problem is that those shrines are all designed to be dedicated to this random sage guy or to dead people. And she doesn’t really think it’ll be well received if they make a dead person shrine for any of the StrawHats except maybe Brook.
But making one of those for him and a different one for everyone else would also be discriminatory and break his heart. Except he doesn’t have a heart to break.
Yohoho, Skull Joke.
Only Otou-san finds that funny. She sulks a little, but digresses.
Even the store owners who make personalized shrines get suspicious when they hint that maybe they would like something for worship that wasn’t dedicated to the sage guy.
They’ve been turned down in three stores so far, and outright banned from one.
In her defense, she wouldn’t have said anything about the owner’s mother if he hadn’t called Naruto a demon and those other awful things.
She gets another cooking ban anyways.
By the start of the following week, her parents don’t quite look at her like she’ll disappear if they take their eyes off of her.
Naruto and Lee stop keeping a death grip on her hands as well, though they do still hug her a lot more than they used to.
She likes the hugs, so she doesn’t bring it up. She’s mostly just glad she gets to sleep in her own bed again.
Chouji’s illness seems to be clearing up too, slowly but steadily. He still has a few hot flushes, but he’s a bit more alert now. When her current cooking ban is over, she plans on making him some chicken noodle soup to help speed up his recovery.
Shikamaru keeps laughing when she tries to enlist his help in identifying if there’s any flavors he particularly likes or doesn’t like, which is beginning to irritate her a little bit.
Sakura’s...not getting better. At all.
Ino’s face seems to be set in a smiling rictus these days, desperately trying to bridge the growing distance between her and Sakura.
Shikamaru and Chouji have been doing more stuff with her, like partnering up for group projects and walking home together, which helps a bit she thinks.
Naruto and Kiba are just on eggshells. Naruto is tiptoeing around them, trying not to do anything that sets off another scolding.
Kiba’s reached the stage where he’s yelling back in self-defense the moment Sakura turns to him and opens her mouth, though every argument leaves both of them looking even more miserable than before.
Hinata’s tried having a word with her, but she just reported back that Sakura either genuinely doesn’t seem to think there’s anything wrong or is doing a very good job of pretending.
She’s putting money on the latter, because the idea of the former being true is too unpalatable for her to swallow.
The weirdest thing is that aside from Ino, Naruto and Kiba, Sakura’s been treating the rest of them like normal.
It does throw her off kilter somewhat. Still, she, Hinata and Shino do their best to adhere to their plan of “be civil, but shut down any attempts to belittle Naruto and Kiba before it gets too bad”.
Uchiha has surprisingly been the best enforcer of this particular policy. All it takes is one disapproving look from him, and Sakura freezes in the middle of what she was saying like a rabbit in front of a hunter, then quickly turns to talk to Hinata about something.
She’d never thought she’d say this, but borderline assaulting chunin together may’ve been the best thing to happen for the three of them.
Still, Sakura is their friend after all. They’re not just going to abandon her. Even if she’s going through...whatever this is.
She’s asked Okaa-san and Otou-san covertly, but apparently all is well in the Haruno household according to Kizashi and Mebuki Haruno, so she’s at a bit of a loss as to what could be going on.
It had better not be a weird, warped form of puberty, courtesy of parasitic chakra somehow turning people into jerks. She’ll—she’ll—she doesn’t know what she’ll do if it is, but she won’t be very happy, that’s for sure.
To add to this confusion, this year boys and girls get split up for lessons after lunch.
The girls are taught by a different teacher to Iruka-sensei, a mousey woman with glasses who tells them that they will be learning how to blend in to civilian society as kunoichi.
She had no idea what that word means.
When she asks the teacher, the woman looks like she might burst into tears for some inexplicable reason. She then refuses Hinata’s offer of a tissue violently, as if the poor girl had offered her a bomb instead of something to blow her nose on.
It does not get better from there.
She’d anticipated that getting The Talk from Otou-san and Okaa-san, or from Gai-sensei, would be awkward enough. She thinks that even Gai-sensei would do it better than this teacher though.
At least he wouldn’t cry at every mention of the word “sex”. Probably.
She makes a mental note to give her friends the less confusing version later.
Hinata is constantly praised in this class for her ability to appear harmless and ladylike, while Ino is chastised for being too overtly “ninja”, whatever that means.
She gets told that, while her feigning ignorance is extremely credible and will serve her well on intelligence missions and under interrogation conditions, she needs to work on being less... memorable.
She’s...fairly certain that’s positive? Relatively certain. Kinda.
The way the teacher’s lower lip is set to a permanent wobble makes it hard to tell.

can I get some headcannonons for demiurge and Ainz's wedding? They're my favorite couple at the moment.
Yes, you may!!! Ahhh! Their relationship is so precious, I’m swooning. I may have gone overboard with this… and demiurge may be a LITTLe out of character……. oops.
They had been dating for a year now, and rumors and questions of when Ainz will finally have a spouse and an heir and becoming so frequent that they even managed to reach the lord of death himself.
It’s gotten so bad that he even heard the other floor guardians muttering about it.
Ainz finally decided enough is enough. With the help of Pandora, he sorted through his massive amounts of the treasury to ‘The Rings of Matrimony’
They were ultra rare event rings that the guild spent some time on collecting, they were only for appearances but being the completionists that were Ainz Ooal Gown… they just couldn’t NOT get them.
And to propose, Ainz took the time to specially craft a gorgeous golden ring. With flawless diamonds as accents and a gorgeous ruby as the main centerpiece.
Tumblr media
(Image is of a Claudine Vintage Engagement ring, found on Diamondere website.)
Ainz, being the complete closet nerd that he is, spends days on end planning the perfect proposal. And if he were being completely honest keeping it hidden from the rest of the guardians had to be the hardest thing he’s ever done in his life.
And he’s done a lot of shit as ruler of Nazarick.
He’s fairly sure Albedo already knows, being the one besides Demiurge who spends so much time with him. He’s also fairly sure that somewhere deep inside of her she’s plotting the demon’s murder… but at the same time, he’s noticed her being oddly quiet about it.
He eventually confronts her about it, due to the looks she gives him from time to time and confesses to helping her lord keep it a secret from Demiurge.
She has to resist every fiber of her being that screams at her to tackle him and claim him right then and there as he praises and thanks her for helping him.
Soon Sebas knows as well, being directed by Ainz to construct a beautiful moonlit dinner for him and his soon to be fiance. The maids arrange the dinner, setting it up in the breathtaking gardens of the 6th floor. Accenting the area with fairy lights, and making sure everything is more than absolutely perfect for the supreme being.
The night it actually happens, Ainz’s passive ability kicks in at least 15 times before he even can gather the nerve to propose. But when he does… oh boy.
Demiurge is shell shocked when his supreme being- the one he devoted his everything to, the one who reigns above all, his creator and his lover- presents himself on one knee.
The demon cannot even react, to seeing his beloved in such a state before Ainz pulls out the beautifully gilded box and opens it revealing the engagement ring Ainz had carefully put so much love into.
“Demiurge, my love…” A slight green aura surrounds him for a brief moment. “Will you do me the great honor, and stay by my side for the rest of my eternal life? To rule Nazarick by my side.
Demiurge’s heart stopped, he couldn’t breathe and when he realized that he had to his breaths came out fast. The poor boy began hyperventilating.
Sooner than Ainz could tell his lover to calm himself, to take it easy, Demiurge has already fallen out of the elegantly cushioned chair to the grassy floor below.
Tears well in his eyes as he clasps the hands of the glorious one before him and lowers himself far lower than Ainz has put himself, the demon’s head almost touching the floor.
“Please… do not lower yourself for a servant such as I.”
“But you are more than just a servant… Demiurge.” Ainz carefully brings Demiurge’s head up to look him in the eyes. “You are the love of my life, so please… will you marry me?”
A series of sobbing ‘yes’s poured from his mouth, kissing Ainz everywhere he could reach. And eagerly donned the ring.
That same night word of the wedding spread like wildfire, unknowing to Ainz, Aura and Mare had been spying from afar. Demiurge simply chose not to comment on it.
The wedding takes place a week later, the preparations took no time at all considering the weight of the event.
Albedo, of course, was in charge of the planning. And with the imput of Ainz she made sure that this wedding would be the grandest event this world had ever known.
If she couldn’t be head wife to her beloved, she would at least assure her place as the one to birth his heir
Tumblr media
(Image found on Pinterest Just imagine this but with more gold and a lot more extravagant… that’s how extra they went.)
Mare grew all of the floral accessories personally, making sure every single flower and leaf was absolutely flawless. He spent hours on end making sure of this, sometimes even worrying his sister with the amount of effort he put in this.
Aura helped Mare with Demiurge’s bouquet, after growing the flora needed the two presented the beautifully tied piece. He couldn’t be prouder.
The furniture was each handcrafted by the best woodworkers of Nazarick, each chair lined with beautiful white satin silk.
Cocytus arranged their finest warriors to act as decoration for the event as well, each individual soldier was done in priceless gilded armor to appeal to the radiance that is their ruler.
Pandora worked behind the scenes and was actually assistant to Albedo. He handled the finances, and all the supplies needed for this luxorious event. He was also there as emotional support for Ainz, as the poor lich was constantly concerned about the scale of his own wedding. He wasn’t one to show off, but the two guardians were having none of it, only the best for their lord.
Shalltear helped with the attire of both grooms. Being the only one with the expansive wardrobe, the vampire made sure that the wedding attire was both fabulous and fitting for beings such as themselves. She actually designed it all herself, with the best cloth workers of Nazarick bringing her piece to life.
Cocytus was also there as support for Demiurge, being the man who expresses himself with action rather than words he made an excellant listener as Demiurge rambled on and on about everything going on. As well as giving out nuggets of wisdom.
“Supreme beings make no errors of judgement, our Lord has chosen you for a reason. Do not doubt him now, when you have not before.”
On the day of the wedding, the weather was absolutely perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. And not a single cloud in the sky. This was to be expected of course, the maids would not allow such a thing as a cloud ruin such a momentus day.
Ainz asked that Pandora’s Actor be his best man. For Demiurge, he asked that Cocytus be his.
Aura and Mare were the flower children, throwing petals accross the carpet for Demiurge to walk along.
Ainz wore a stunning white tux, gilded in gold and lace with a transparent cape fluttering behind him.
Demiurge wore something similar but his highlighting his own features. His outfit being accented with beautiful diamonds and gold of its own.
The hundreds of seats were filled with the denizans of Nazarick, an unsettling sight to some… but absolutely stunning to Ainz. To see the entirety of his treasure present before him, made him want to cry.
Trust me when I say that if Ainz could cry right now he would be sobbing.
Upon request Sebas is their pastor, he just seems to fit the role perfectly. And it’s an honor to Ainz’s own close friend Lord Touch Me.
I do not exaggerate when I say EVERYONE in nazarick that day cried… Even Sebas. Their vows absolutely shook everyone.
“Demiurge… I never thought, that in all my years of existence, I would ever deserve someone such as yourself. I felt lost, when my precious comrades had left this Nazarick… I feared that the place in my heart that they had left empty would never be filled. But when you’re with me… I feel whole.”
Everyone is surprised to see that Demiurge hasn’t compeltely broken down yet and the devastation that is his tail hasn’t been released yet. Though they could barely see them through their own tears.
Everyone is just so emotional.
“Lord Ainz, never in my lifetime would I ever have thought I would get the honor to wed you. I do not deserve such a radiant and generous being such as yourself. To acquire the intimate love of a supreme being had been unfathomable to me… but to be here today and to see how you could ever love someone as lowly as me- no amount of words could describe how I feel for you. I swear to you, Ainz Ooal Gown, Lord Momonga. I will give you everything this world has to offer, my entire being included, just to ever amount to what you give to me.”
Ainz is so flustered, his husband is too extra for his poor little neet heart to handle.
The party after is certainly something to remember, even though he can’t eat and most of the denizens of Nazarick don’t even need to the maids worked endlessly to produce such a fantastic feast for all of Nazarick to enjoy.
Oh my god when Ainz tells Demiurge of the tradition to throw his bouquet.
Albedo and Shalltear and seething, glaring at each other fighting over who gets to marry Lord Ainz next.
Demiurge accidentally throws it too hard, and from their fighting both miss the bouquet as it flies over their heads and lands in Mare’s arms.
Both of them look murderous, scarily calm as they both ask Mare for the flowers.
HE REFUSES!!!!!!!
“B-But… I wanna m-m-marry Ainz-sama some… some day too….”
AINZ IS CHOKING
DEMIURGE IS TRYING NOT TO LAUGH
THE TWO FEMALE GUARDIANS ARE SpeaCHLESS!!!
Ainz ends up having to teach Aura and Mare about marriage, giving them a quick parent talk.
In the end, it’s still undecided. Mare still not wanting to give it up and Aura not letting him, after all, he caught it fair and square.
The two slow dance, it’s so romantic. Everyone is partnered up with somebody.
Even Cocytus is out there dancing with Entoma.
To be honest the party is fantastic and is certainly the gossip of Nazarick for the next couple of months.
Ainz couldn’t feel more in love than he does with Demiurge, the two act a whole lot more lovey-dovey.
They keep up their professional appearances still, but when around allies will playfully call each other pet names.
Mostly demiurge, Ainz is just so shy… actually exclusively demiurge. Ainz is too flustered and too introverted for his own good.
“As you request, my love.”
Also Demiurge, to Ainz’s bewilderment, seems to still condone the idea of multiple spouses… Albedo isn’t keeping this fact a secret either.
Please, someone, help Papa Bones.

Shadowbringers (pt 4/end)
This just has spoilers for everything, basically. :U I finished it and don’t feel like splitting stuff up because I have over 1k screenshots to go through...
Tumblr media
Katana-bearing Centurion: Besides, there is but one hand that can make me whole again. My enemy... my friend...
He probably just says “friend” there in Japanese, but I don’t have my whole game switched, so I don’t get to know for sure. Good to know you’re still being weird, Zenos.
Tumblr media
Don’t you smirk at me like that, mister.
Tumblr media
Here’s Urianger being handsome, as usual
Tumblr media
I hated fighting this old dude as Thancred.
1) I still can’t believe he can easily take out the WoL like he did
2) Stop making me be sword dudes!!
3) I get why they wanted people to see the dialogue here, but it was so slooooow and I died once near the end and had to do it all over again and ughhh, just go away
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ryne looks cute with her new hair and eyes, at least. :) Thancred is still a bad dad, but at least he’s doing better now... I guess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, Urianger’s reaction to finding out that Thancred was paying attention to some of his talks about pixies was really good, haha.
...I wanna listen to Urianger give a pixie lecture...
Tumblr media
Wow
Tumblr media
This was something the game threw together when I asked it to pick recommended gear. It’s... some kind of look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Exarch/G’raha Tia is a qt. Y’know, I figured it was probably G’raha Tia, but I didn’t remember him being so short... and the lack of cat ears also made me doubt myself, haha.
I’m really glad I did the Crystal Tower stuff, though, because otherwise I’d... well, I’d still think that G’raha Tia/the Exarch is cute and like him a lot, but it wouldn’t have had the same impact.
Tumblr media
I took a bunch of screenshots of Mikh’a. :U
Tumblr media
& Emet-Selch, ofc
Tumblr media
that one old dude: If you would pass me, you must endure all that I have learned on the battlefield... For I am a weapon forged in the fires of war!
~*oooh, I’m so scared of you and your tiny amount of health left*~
My MP doesn’t even have a dent in it, really. This is why I had such a hard time believing this dude could take out the WoL!! Even the first time we fought, I had tons of MP available to me and could’ve made a full recovery from being brought down to 1 HP. (...well, I have Benediction which is kind of cheating, but still.)
At least this was the last time I had to deal with him. He’s probably the worst thing about the expansion, which I guess I can deal with since the rest of it was so good.
Tumblr media
Lots of really pretty screenshot opportunities in this expansion. c:
Mt. Gulg is something I thought was common to a bunch of FF games for some reason, but apparently it was in the original Final Fantasy, FFIX, and some random spin-off games. Weird.
Tumblr media
How did Mikh’a hear him talking from that far away??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emet-Selch has such a good design and you can tell that a lot of work was put into him. The expressions he makes, the way he stands and walks--it’s all unique to him and it makes him stand out a lot.
Even after everything that happened in the expansion, I’m really fond of him. They made the right move in having him kind of forge a more personal relationship with you/the WoL, because if he hadn’t been obnoxious in the background throughout most of the expansion it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as interesting/good as it ended up being.
Tumblr media
I obviously chose to say that they were all Alphinaud’s assistants. :P
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This little scene was so cute... lali-hos for everyone...
Tumblr media
Crystal Exarch: Ugh! I would thank you not to shoot me!
I’m sorryyyyyy ; ~; You were there and I wanted to see what would happen!!!
Tumblr media
Crystal Exarch: Ah heh... It may interest you to know that Mikh’a is a great hero in the land whence he hails. Some would say the greatest.
This little venture made me feel like I’d suddenly gotten married and adopted a child
(Which I’d be totally fine with, tbh.)
I loved this thing, actually!! I got to heal G’raha Tia, he healed me, we both healed our new tiny dwarf child, it was great.
Tumblr media
c:
I’m still using the Mogrod. I’m never going to stop using it. Give me another thing that has a flower and swirly rainbows all over and maybe I’ll switch weapons, but until then? No.
...unless there’s, like... a really, really pretty plant weapon, especially if it matches Mikh’a’s outfit... but I don’t think there is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got to put my bubble on them. :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s so cuuuuuute. And Mikh’a clearly agrees with my thoughts on him, considering the expression on his face when he looks at him.
Tumblr media
One of the reasons I keep Mikh’a wearing the WHM gear is because I really like the contrast I get--a lot of the major characters wear black, so it looks nice when they stand next to each other. :D
Tumblr media
Katana-bearing Centurion: The whereabouts of my one true friend, however--they interest me greatly. I but hope the beasts of this “First” are providing him proper sport.
Zenos is so funny to me. He just pops up like “did someone mention my friend” while his dad and Elidibus are having a serious conversation.
Tumblr media
Innocence has beautiful hair and if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I’d never believe that he was Vauthry.
Tumblr media
You can kind of see @tarifu in this screenshot! :D
Tumblr media
You can definitely see her here--wait... why is half the party wearing dwarf beard outfits...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is probably weird to say, but I genuinely like when characters I play in games like this suffer/are in pain. Not, like... constantly. I just like it when NPCs get to express concern and you aren’t some kind of unbreakable hero 24/7. >_>
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously I was going to say his name, who wouldn’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This made me cry!! I thought he was dead. :C
Tumblr media
But thankfully Emet-Selch didn’t want him dead, so he did not die.
...why’d he even need a gun? Has he always had a gun?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wish I could just float off into the sky after ruining everything and being a big jerk
Tumblr media
sad kitty
Tumblr media
I died when I came here with Jack and Mari because I didn’t realize I was being targeted by the boss until it was too late. :,)
I got to practice using my shield, though!! I’m not used to having one so I’m not super great at remembering it exists and using it; the tether thing is a good visual for “this specific person is going to be damaged soon and a shield would be Good”. ...unless everyone’s bunched up and I can’t tell who has it until it’s too late, I guess.
I know I’m level 80 now, but there’s still a lot I haven’t done and I’m still trying to figure out what the best way to do things is sometimes... I still need to mess with my hotbars and stuff, actually. I think I might switch some things around more than I already have, because some useful things aren’t as easy to use as they could/should be and I’ve been wanting to mess around with stuff for a while. The Trust dungeons should be a really good opportunity to test new configurations! Or the squad dungeons, I guess. :/a
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m still not Ardbert’s biggest fan, but I don’t dislike him.
Tumblr media
Poor Urianger, getting stuck with the role of the only other person to know the Exarch’s plans. :(
Tumblr media
& then everyone died going to the bottom of the sea and the game ended
Tumblr media
I got to help put dwarf helmets on sineaters :U
Tumblr media
I also remembered that I have fancy wings now, wheee
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got a nice new outfit after doing my last Healer role quest! :D I like it a lot~ The whites are brighter than the last outfit, and the bit in back accommodates his tail much better than the corset did.
I might play around with mixing and matching some pieces once I get newer stuff, but for now this is what I’ve got! c:
...and I refuse to wear the hat. 100%. I’m not making Mikh’a look like a weird nun. :|
Tumblr media
Amaurot was really good, even if being there mostly just made me sad. >_> The not-people were so cute and nice, though...
Tumblr media
Big
Tumblr media
The WoL hanging out on this giant bench is so cute.
Tumblr media
I liked getting to talk to Emet-Selch’s friend. c: Well... kind of, anyway. Since it’s not really his friend...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tiny
Tumblr media
Emet-Selch: I have broken bread with you, fought with you, grown ill, grown old! Sired children and yes, welcomed death’s sweet embrace.
I still don’t 100% understand how Ascians work, but I guess it’s canon that Emet-Selch fucks :/a
I regret typing that, I think, but it is apparently true
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think your fireplace has something wrong with it
Tumblr media
Really though, this dungeon was excellent.
Alisaie decided that she wanted to LB right as one of the bosses was doing one of those “hide behind a rock Or You Will Die” things so she died & I accidentally walked right off the edge near the end of the last boss fight (oops), but other than that things went okay!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
D:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ardbert could you please clean your axe somehow before you point it at me like that. tia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a really neat moment :U
Tumblr media
I’m not calling Emet-Selch Hades ever. Sorry, Emet-Selch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was kind of afraid to do this trial and almost waited until someone would be able to do it with me, but it really wasn’t that bad in the end!
...except for when I died five times to the same attack... orz It was that arm-sweeping one, too, so it’s not like it’s not obvious that it’s coming. My problem was that I kept getting Raised in bad places right before it happened, so he basically just kept smacking me down over and over again.
(Which was partially my fault, because I should’ve waited to accept the Raise until I knew it was safe to be alive, but... I don’t like leaving the other healer alone and I don’t want to just be lying there uselessly if I can avoid it.)
Fortunately(?) the party wiped due to something completely unrelated (a failed mechanic I had nothing to do with) and I didn’t die at all the second time around! So at least there was that.
Tumblr media
I liked this bit in the dark. c:
Tumblr media
I also liked when I got trapped in the bubble and didn’t have to do anything. Thanks, Emet-Selch!
Genuinely though, it was a nice little chance for me to calm the hell down because my anxiety was getting real bad before/during this fight. >_>
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poor dude. :c Obviously he’s responsible for some absolutely terrible things and I’m not going to try to deny that or anything, but he’s lived for so long and he’s had to deal with the loss of basically everyone he ever cared about for that whole time. He recreated that entire city and all of its people, that’s how much he cared.
Still no excuse for basically trying to kill all of the people he didn’t consider “real”! But also still sad, IMO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This made me go “awww” out loud and start to tear up, haha...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn’t want to leave him ; ~;
Tumblr media
Estinien said a full sentence here about how these guards were dead, too (in a way that implied he assumed that’s what they’d find), and the localization translated it as “hmph”. Kind of a weird choice there, but okay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zenos basically went Full Yandere since he killed his father just because he could potentially get in the way of his thing with the WoL, so... that’s something that’s going to have to be dealt with at some point.
I’m interested in seeing how things go, but I’m also a wee bit concerned that other people might get caught up in whatever this obsession is. I don’t want anyone to get hurt or killed because of Zenos’s yandere tendencies. :(
Tumblr media
Elidibus is being Boring on the moon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But who cares about that! I got to lead a Girl Scout meeting for my level 80 WHM quest.
Tumblr media
Oh! Almost forgot about the story I got to tell the girls: “The tale of a man who crossed time and space to save the world... and me.”
I think the second one is about (original) Minfilia, maybe? :/a I wanted to tell them about G’raha Tia, though.
Aaaand that’s all I’ve done! \o/ I unlocked a new dungeon and I know there’s more than one post-80 dungeon, so I’ll probably check those out when I get a chance... but I finished the main stuff.
Which is kinda weird, because now I’m done again, haha... but I’ve got plenty of stuff to do before the next new stuff comes out. Especially since I discovered that Vamo alla Flamenco is the “dancer’s theme”, apparently. Need to dance ASAP >:O

Radiators are Hot
Pairing: Ringo x female!reader
Summary: Ringo and the reader have been friends since they were young and one day when Ringo gets hurt the reader has to help him out in a rather strange way.
warnings: none
I had learned to play drums when I was around 14, after I had recovering from tuberculosis. When I was still sick and at the children’s sanatorium there wasn’t much to do. They only activities they had for us were knitting and listening to music. It wasn’t all terrible though because that’s where I meet my best friend, Richard Starkey. We would sit around the radio and goof around, getting into trouble with the staff. One time a group of boys were picking on me, Richard stepped up to them and told them off. At night I would sometimes get scared that they wouldn’t be able to help us get better and that I would die in that place, but every time I was on the verge of tears Richard would show up by my bedside, like he knew I needed him, and we would quickly crawl under the bed and use it as a type of fort where we would tell stories to one another. Richard always told me how after we got better he was going to learn to play the drums and join a band and that once they got famous he would take me on tour with him and show me the world. I would tell him that after we got better I was going to make clothes and become a high end fashion designer and I would make him the most extravagant outfits. We would both giggle and lay there until we fell asleep, or until one of the staff found us and made Richard go back to his bed.
After we got better and they had to send us back home, we found out that we actually lived very close to each other, our houses only being a few streets away. Richard did as he promised me and learned to play the drums and got really good at it. I tried my hand at fashion design, but everyone said the clothes I made were tacky and no one would ever wear them, Richard tried to tell me otherwise, but in the end I just wasn’t cut out for it. Instead I asked Richard if he would teach me to play drums, and he did. He was rather impressed with how quickly I had learned to play.
Then once I was around 17 and I had a job, I saved enough to buy my own drum set and I would play any time I wasn’t at work or with Richard. Richard had gotten better as well, even joining a band. I envied him a little. I tried my best to find other people to play with, but no matter what no one would pick me up, and all for the same reason: I was a girl. No one wanted a girl in their band unless she was around for background vocals and nothing else. It was frustrating. All I wanted to do was play on a stage for even a small group of people.
Several years passed and I still wasn’t in a band, but I never gave up on drumming. Then one day Richard came to me so excited. Him and his band were going tour and he wanted me to go with them.
“Come on, Y/N! This is exactly what we talked about as kids! You have to come!”
“I don’t know, Richard. I mean I have a job and it’s not completely terrible, so I’d kind of like to keep it.” I said.
“Come on! You don’t need a job, I’ll take care of you until you find a guy and fall in love! Just come with me!”
“You’re absolutely delusional.. but OK, I’ll go with you.” I said, trying my best to hide my smile.
Richard wrapped his arms around me and swung me around. “Excellent! Pack your bags, we leave tomorrow!”
“Tomorrow? Isn’t this a little short notice? You couldn’t have let me known a couple days prior?”
“I was going to, but I kept forgetting.” Richard said, a little sheepishly.
The next morning I was up early with my bags ready to go. I was standing right outside of Richard’s front door. As soon as I knocked the door swung open and stood in the frame was a tall man with brown hair and brown eyes. He looked down on me just as confused as I was. He quickly turned his head to the side and shouted into the house, “Hey, did anyone order a bride or something?”
From inside came a shout from another man. “Not me!”
Richard also shouted a “No.”
“Oh, it might be mine, let me check” said another man.
Before I knew it another man, slightly taller than the other stepped into the door frame. He had dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He looked at me and hummed.
“Well I certainly didn’t order her, but I’d be more than will to keep her.” He said with a wink.
“Actually I’m Richard’s friend, he wanted me to go on tour with him?” I said, still very confused.
“Ahh, I see.” He said before turning his head into the house. “‘Richard’,it’s for you!” He called almost mockingly.
“I’m Paul by the way, come inside!” Paul said, stepping aside to let me in.
“Here, allow me to grab your bag. I’m John.” Said the man who had first opened the door.
Walking inside I couldn’t help but notice how the house was a mess. There were books laying on the floor and clothes strewn about. There was another man sitting at the dining table, eating a sandwich. John pointed over to him, “That’s George.” He said. George nodded his head towards me, letting me know that he acknowledged my presence.
Soon Richard came down the stairs, holding a suitcase, “Alright, we better get going before we miss the train.”
“Oi, Ringo, who’s your friend? Is she available?” Paul asked, smirking.
“Oh shut it, this is Y/N. She’ll be joining us on the tour.”
“Cabs here!” Shouted John, who was looking out the window.
Quickly everyone grabbed their stuff and ran out to the car. Paul had grabbed my bag for me and placed it in the trunk, while John had opened the cab’s door, allowing me to step in. I sat between John and Richard while Paul and George stay up front with the driver. The whole ride John and Paul had been very flirty with me, while George just sat quietly. Richard would huff every time John or Paul would ask me a question, I could tell he was getting jealous having the two of them all over me.
“Why do you call Richard ‘Ringo’?” I asked
“Well because of all the rings he wears.” Said Paul, pointing at Richard’s hands. “Everyone calls him Ringo, it’s his stage name. ‘Ringo Starr’. You’re the only one who doesn’t. The real question should be why don’t you call him Ringo?”
“Well I’ve known him since we were kids. We were sick together.” I said
“Ah, childhood lovers.” John sighed, placing his hands on his heart and tilting his head back, being dramatic.
“Oh, shut up, you daft git.” Richard said, annoyed with how the pair had been acting.
“Oh come on, Ringo. We’re just having some fun.” Said Paul.
“We’re here.” Said George suddenly as the driver pulled up lot the station.
We all stepped out, everyone quickly grabbing their bags. However, before I could get to mine, or rather before John or Paul could get to mine, Richard quickly grabbed the handle, carrying it off to the platform.
I followed closely to the 4 tall men as we rushed to get on the train before it left.
Once inside the train, everyone relaxed and prepared for the next 3 hours we would spend on our way to your next destination. I sat next to the window with Richard to my right, and George to his. In the seats facing me was Paul, who was looking out the window, and John. I pulled out the book that I had placed in my purse and got comfortable, resting my head on Richard’s shoulder.
After a while we all went to the dining cart and ate breakfast, and before we knew it the train was stopping at the station we were to get off at.
Getting off the train we were lead by the bands managers to a cab, where from there we were taken to a hotel where we were to be for a while before going to the venue where the boys would be playing. Because it was rather last second, I was sharing a room with Richard in the suite the band had booked.
John, Paul, and George has all gone off, wandering around the hotel to cause trouble. I was busy styling my hair and doing my makeup, something I hadn’t gotten a chance to do after waking up a little late, when I heard a shout come from the sitting area of the suite. I ran in to find Richard holding his right hand as he winced in pain.
“What happened? What’s wrong?” I said quickly rushing over to him.
“I accidentally burnt myself on the radiator. It’s pretty bad.” He said. I grabbed him by his wrist and lead him into the bathroom where I quickly ran cold water over his hand. Richard hissed when the cold water touched his tender flesh, but soon he sighed as the coolness eased some of the pain.
“You can’t play tonight, hell you may be unable to play for a week! We have to tell the others.” I said.
“No!” Richard jumped, “No, we can’t. I’m sure I can play, but we can’t tell them, they’ll cancel the show, and I don’t want to let everyone down!”
“Richard, there’s no way you can play, you’re hand is scorched.”
“I’ll be fine, look!” He said as he grabbed a nearby pin, holding it like he would one of his drum sticks. He looked at me for a couple of seconds with a smile on his face, but quickly he was fighting back tears and trying his best to force the smile before he finally yelped and dropped the pen.
“Richard, stop. You’re not playing tonight.” I said, placing his hand back under the water.
“Fine.” He said, in defeat. Just than he lit up. “Yeah, I won’t be playing tonight, you will!”
“I suppose I can cover for you, but we still need to tell the guys.”
“No, there’s no need. This isn’t the first time I’ve burnt myself on a radiator, I’ll be fine. What we need to do is get you looking like me!”
“Why do I need to look like you? The guys will understand if you’re hurt and I go on in your place, there’s no need to dress me up.”
“Y/N, I know you’re a great drummer, maybe even better than me, but the guys don’t know that. They think you’re just some girl. If we try and tell them you’re this amazing drummer, they’ll never believe us. And besides it’ll be fun!”
I didn’t know what to say. I stood there for a couple of seconds weighing the pros and cons. What was there to lose?
“Alright, let’s do it!” I said, giggling.
“Perfect! OK, let’s hurry and get you an outfit!” Richard beamed. We carefully took off his rings and wrapped his hand before heading out to get everything we needed to make me look just like Ringo.
After two hours of shopping we were back in the hotel suite, putting everything in a small suitcase and getting ready to go. Just as we closed the bag John, Paul, and George, who was eating, all stepped back into the room followed by their manager.
“Alright get the things you’ll need for tonight, and do it quickly. The cars waiting!” He said.
I grabbed the suitcase and headed for the door.
“Why’re you bring that suitcase? what’s in it?” John asked from behind me, making me jump a little.
“Oh, you know.. lady stuff. I have to bring it.” I said quickly trying to think of something. Me and Richard quickly rushed down to the car. I placed the suitcase in the trunk and we both sat in the front seat next to the driver. Richard kept his hand concealed in his pocket until we reached the venue.
Once inside me and Richard quietly slipped away to a hidden broom closet backstage. There I quickly put on the chest binder, suit, and wig we had bough hours prior. Richard put on a long coat and hat, trying his best to blend in with the people backstage.
“Don’t forget these.” Richard said, slipping the many rings he had bought me onto my fingers. They resembled the ones he wore almost perfectly. Before walking out he quickly fixed the wig I had on. As we walked out I caught my reflection in a mirror hanging on a nearby wall. I didn’t look too bad. Sure I didn’t look exactly like Richard and I was nearly a foot too short, but I looked pretty close. The crew must have though so as well because before I knew it I was being lightly powdered with makeup and handed drum sticks.
“Ringo! Come on, we’re going on now!” Paul called towards me. I jogged over and we were pushed on stage. I quickly sat behind the drum set and adjusted the so I was sitting comfortably.
I looked up at the curtain that was currently hiding us from the audience. I could hear the announcer over the speakers as he introduced us.
“Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles!”
The curtains raised and I was faced with the sight of what looked like thousands of screaming girls. Some has signs saying ‘we love you’ some even said ‘Ringo’. My chest felt heavy as I look out on the sea of people. Their screams were the only things that could be heard. Feeling as though I was going to be sick, I looked to my left and there stood Richard. He gave me a smile and a thumbs up and all my fears melted away. I turned back to the crowd. Soon Paul was trying his best to shout over the screaming fans “A ONE. TWO. THREE.” That was my que to start playing. While we were shopping Richard told me how to play all the songs on the set list and he gave me some tips as well. ‘You have to watch Paul’s foot or John’s ass.’ ‘why would I watch John’s ass?’ ‘To keep time! He waggles it to the beat!’
It was nearly impossible to hear ourselves, but I had the time of my life. Before I knew it the show was over and we all bowed and ran off stage.
“That was great!” Paul Said, beaming.
“Absolutely amazing!” John said, patting me hard on the shoulder, “Ringo! That was great!”
“Y/N!” Richard yelled.
John, Paul, and George all looked up to see Richard standing a few feet away in a poorly done up disguise. I ran over to him, wrapping my arms around his neck, being careful not to hit his hand. He wrapped his arms around my waist and spun me around, making my wig fly off. When he sat me down I was so excited my hands flew up to grab his face and I pulled him down to kiss him. Richard was confused at first, but he quickly kissed me back. Pulling away we were both smiling.
“What just happened?” Paul Said.
“Y/N played with us and we all pretended she was Ringo.” George Said. Paul and John looked at George and than looked at me and Richard.
“I thought we all knew that.” George Said.
For the next week of the tour the guys would dress me up as Richard and I would play in his place. And after Richard’s hand was all healed I became the ‘official Ringo Starr emergency stand in’ as well as Richard’s girlfriend.

Professor Jonathan Crane has a very interesting encounter with one of his students, a Miss Harleen Quinzel, who is much more than she appears (AO3 link at bottom)
Keeping his voice as even as possible, Jonathan swept his eyes slowly across the lecture hall as he posed his question.
“Can anyone see the flaw in Mr. Lloyds' hypothesis?” Total silence met him as each student valiantly fought to avoid his eye lest they be chosen to answer him. “No one at all? I am disap-”
“He had failed to account for the inclusion of environmental factors which may add bias to the results. His decision to host the questionnaire within a cramped, dark office space may create anxiety within the participant and skew the results.”
As the female voice rang out confidently across the room, Jonathan raised an eyebrow. Impressive. She had picked up the obvious issue and had been able to explain it perfectly. Seeking out the source of the voice, his eyes met a young blonde woman who sat a few rows from the front.
“Correct, Ms?”
“Quinzel.” The woman smiled pleasantly as he focused on her.
Wanting to further test her, he pushed his glasses back up his nose and continued.
“And how could this bias be eliminated?”
“The questionnaire could be presented to the participant within a more open space which may eliminate some anxiety but it is impossible to completely eliminate the bias as we have no knowledge of what fears the participants may already possess.”
“Excellent!” Giving a rare smile, Jonthan nodded at her. “Now, you are all required to take note of Ms. Quinzels' observation and I would like each student here to discover at least two other issues which could arise from Mr. Lloyds' method. We will discuss your findings on Wednesday.”
Walking back behind his small podium, Jonathan clicked the small laptop to bring up the next screen of the powerpoint.
“Now, as you can see -”
x-x-x-x-x
The remainder of the lesson continued on in regular fashion, with the majority of students putting in the minimal effort while their desperate eyes darted to and from the large clock which would signal their freedom.
Before long, the shrill cry of the bell announced that the lesson was over and the quiet auditorium erupted with noise as bags were ripped open and chairs were vacated. Sighing, Jonathan walked to the other side of his small table and took his seat again, ignoring the class as they left. He had no more lectures until the late afternoon which gave him some time to finish marking the rest of the lab reports which he had collected earlier in the week.
Leaning over the desk, his pen was poised over the paper when a soft cough grabbed his attention.
Glancing up, he realised that he was not alone.
“Miss Quinzel!?” He exclaimed as the blonde stood confidently before him, “Would you like to speak with me?” He gestured to the empty chair which sat on the opposite side of the desk.
Smiling at him, she slid into the seat.
“Sure, Doc.”
Returning her smile, with a small one of his own, Jonathan corrected her.
“I prefer Professor.”
“Sure, Professor.”
“So what can I do for you, Miss Quinzel?”
“Call me Harley, everyone does.”
“What can I help you with, Harley?”
“Can I just say, Professor, that you are one of my favourite lecturers here,” Harley began, her voice full of praise, “and it was your lecture last year on the development of phobias in the modern world that inspired me to take this class.”
“I am pleased to hear that.”
“You were also the lecturer who stuck up for me that one time I almost got suspended and I always wanted to say thank you for it.”
Hmm. He had never seen this women before today and any memory of having assisted her was not coming to him.
“I did? I must apologise because I cannot reca-”
“It was early last year,” Harley elaborated, “and I almost got suspended cause some creep tried to put his hands on me in my social class and I knocked him out with a very hard punch. Your signature was on the bottom of the sheet which said I was allowed to stay at the university.”
A memory hit him and he nodded in recognition, giving her a simple explanation.
“I do not like bullies.”
Recalling the incident, he also remembered a little bit more about the woman before him. She had been one of the few to receive a full athletic scholarship into the university. For gymnastics, he was sure. At the time of the incident she had been in the top third of her class and if her work today was any indication she was still excelling.
His thoughts were interrupted as Harley spoke again.
“I actually have a favour to ask of you, Professor Crane.” Her voice was still friendly but the lightness of it caused his interest to perk.
“Yes?”
Placing his hands on the desk, he cursed silently as he accidentally knocked his pen off the edge. As he bent down to retrieve it he amused himself with considering what kind of favour she could need. Most likely an extension on a deadline. Students these days had no respect for deadlines.
Pulling himself upright and placing his hands on the desk again, he was surprised to notice that Harley had not appeared to have moved a single inch.
And yet the top button of her blouse had come undone.
Refraining from rolling his eyes and a little disappointed with her actions, he sat silently as he waited for her to continue.
“I was planning on interning at Arkham over the coming summer and I would love it if you gave me a recommendation, Doctor Crane.” Still as happy as ever, she even went so far as to bat her eyelashes at him.
Setting his mouth in a straight line, Jonathan shook his head as he glanced back at his papers.
“I do not have that kind of power, Miss Quinzel.”
Her body leaned forward enough to force Jonathan to look at her and when his gaze locked with hers he found himself momentarily caught off-guard at her expression.
Gone was the bubbly attitude and friendly exterior, now replaced by staunch determination which was only overshadowed by a look of pure hunger which he recognised.
Ambition.
With absolutely no trace of an accent, she argued his rejection.
“Yes, you do. When new criminal patients are admitted into the asylum you assist on the majority of their evaluations and I am aware that you host both private and group sessions with patients who have conditions which range from depression to sadistic psychopathy.”
Clearing her throat, she continued.
“Your word would mean a lot to the staff and I know you could get me in the door. My grades are good enough to make me a serious candidate but I want to be certain of a place.”
All thoughts of the lab reports gone from his mind, Jonathan focused fully on her for the first time since she had taken the seat.
“Why?”
“You are notorious for being the final word professionally on phobias and human fear. That is your niche.” She gestured to him with a hand. “I have a very large interest in extreme personalities and Arkham is perfect for me to explore that niche interest.”
She had done her research. The majority of his published works were centered on human phobias and their varying origins. An idea had even come to him recently and he had started a private project which was designed to explore whether or not a chemical compound could be created to stimulate the brain into experiencing fear and anxiety.
Fear was his niche.
“And to what end would you like to explore these personalities?”
Her serious expression disappeared and was quickly replaced with another one of her bright smiles, a smile which did not quite cover the ambition in her eyes.
“I want to help people get better. I want to help these people overcome their illnesses.”
She was lying.
But he did not particularly care.
Arkham was truly full of the worst of humanity and if his private project came to fruition he was hoping to get permission to use some of its criminal inhabitants to volunteer to test the formula.
Considering the woman before him for a minute silently, his instincts were telling him that she bore no genuine ill will towards the patients. She was ambitious, but not dangerous, and if she wanted to experience the fresh hell that was Arkham Asylum then he would not stop her.
She had caught his interest and that was a rare occasion in itself.
So he would do it.
Pushing his glasses back up the bridge of his nose, he gave her a sharp nod.
“I will see what I can do for you, Miss Quinzel. On the condition that you continue to excel in your chosen subjects.”
“Aww thanks Doctah Crane! You're the absolute best!” She exclaimed, clapping her hands together excitedly. “Also, I really hope your meeting with the faculty goes well!”
Again off-footed by the blonde, Jonathan covered his shock and asked.
“How do you know about that?”
“People talk.” She shrugged.
“I am not concerned by my meeting.” He confessed. “I will most likely receive a small disciplinary for my actions, perhaps a week off with no pay, and then I will return to my work immediately.”
“If it makes ya feel any better,” Harley soothed him, “I would have loved to have seen a gun fired in class. It would be really scary but exciting, yeah?” “Not everyone shares your opinion, child.”
“Everyone else is boring.”
Checking her watch, Harley jumped from the seat like it had burned her.
“Sorry Professor, but I need to get to my next class or i'm gonna be late! Thank you again for helping me out.”
“Think nothing of it.” He offered evenly, watching her passively as she practically ran from the auditorium, her shoes clacking against the flooring in her hurry.
As soon as she had disappeared from sight, Jonathan pulled the glasses from his face and sat them down gently top the stack of paper before him.
Miss Quinzel was not prepared for Arkham.
Twisting his mouth, Jonathan estimated that she would last a month at the most before the stress caused her to request a reassignment and he had no doubt that a tell-all, exploitative novel penned by one Dr H. Quinzel exploring the sensationalist world of super criminals would soon find itself on the best sellers list.
But he would fulfil her request and make a recommendation for her internship. He could type up the letter in the early hours of the following morning, just before he started to prepare for his meeting with the faculty board and faced whatever asinine punishment they had in store for him.
With her grades and his influence within the asylum, he had no doubt that she would be accepted. It was a dangerous job but the incarceration of super-criminals such as Victor Fries and the Joker had resulted in the security of the asylum being drastically improved and it was almost impossible for the inmates to physically harm the doctors.
She would be safe from any potential attack and, after all, it was only an internship.
What was the worst that could happen?

More Than Just A Dream
AN: It’s been a while since I’ve updated this story here and I realized I probably should. If you want to read it ahead of my uploads here, check it out on Ao3 at: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30425217/chapters/75014091
Chapter 2
A few months had passed since her unusual arrival in this universe. She now knew that the person she kept seeing in her dreams was a Drell. But she’d still never met him. She didn’t know if she ever would.
She’d been staying with Kali since her hospital release and thanks to the Asari, she’d managed to get a job with C-Sec after carefully working to fabricate a background for her that would align with this world. It helped that the two of them were able to read memories, although Nyra usually refused to do so, scared of what would happen if she did.
Kali was a wonderful friend, and sometimes the two of them would chat after work. Sometimes Nyra’s mind would “meld” accidentally with Kali or other people on the streets - prodding, other times she would control it. Kali was helping her learn control, while also keeping progress and updated on the parasite growing in her head. So far, it hasn't gotten any worse, but it also hadn’t gotten any better.
Nyra was the talk of her C-Sec office, being a strange woman who didn’t look like any of the others on the station. She wasn’t really upset about the stares or whispers that went on behind her back. Being a drow, she’d gotten used to criticism when she’d been on the surface. Drow weren’t really accepted amongst most folk.
She quietly headed for the desk she shared with her partner, a turian named Garrus Vakarian. She nodded to him as she approached. Despite being relatively new to the force, with her fake background, she’d managed to get a decent standing. Both she and Garrus were relatively new, although she’d learned both through fellow officers as well as her own searches that Garrus had family in C-Sec.
The turian was relatively young, about 24 years old, which was a lot younger than Nyra, despite her inexperience with this particular universe. He was brash and stubborn, meanwhile she was a little more calm, but just as stubborn.
“Hey partner,” he said.
“Vakarian. So, what’s the assignment today?”
He reached over and grabbed a datapad, tossing it to her. She caught it and hummed as she opened the files and began to skim through the information. “Okay...a fight in the lower wards, several dead. Only witness is a volus who happened to spot the scene as he was heading to work,” she muttered. She closed her eyes and tapped the datapad to her chin. “We need to speak with this volus, but also check on the bodies.”
“I suggest we check out the bodies first, before they get too cold.”
She opened her eyes and looked at him, giving a nod. “Let’s get going then,” she said.
His mandibles flicked outwards before he followed her.
After looking at the bodies in the morgue, they were able to conclude that the kills were clean. Clearly a professional. Most likely an assassin. Nyra didn’t know as much about the killers of this world, but only an assassin would be able to make kills that clean. Unfortunately, it was uncertain who was the assassin’s target.
So the two of them headed to the Volus to question him. He said he hadn’t seen anything aside from a shadow too fast to make out before the bodies dropped. They’d pried him for more information on the shadow. If he had any, he gave none.
Garrus believed the Volus was hiding something. Nyra didn’t know. It was hard to tell with creatures that lived inside suits of armor. If she’d been back in her world, she would’ve just gotten someone who could cast “Zone of Truth” to hopefully get him to speak. Unfortunately, she wasn’t home, and she didn’t have that skill.
Their investigation was coming up with nothing. Both of them were frustrated so Nyra suggested visiting the scene of the crime. Since Garrus couldn’t think of a better plan, he agreed and the two of them soon arrived.
As they approached the roped off segment of the ward, Nyra couldn’t help but notice how it looked similar to the ward she’d arrived in a month ago. She didn’t think it was the same one, but there were a lot of places that held similar designs on the Citadel.
The area was mostly spotless aside from some leftover remnant guns going off and the general dirt and grime of this part of the wards. Humming to herself, she walked past the barriers and wandered into the space, looking around for anything they might have missed.
In the dim light of the ward, her eyes caught onto some splatters on the ground and the wall. Curious, she stepped closer.
“Garrus, I found something,” she announced.
The turian glanced over from where he’d been observing the gun shells, marking down the types he’d found. “What is it?” he asked, walking over, careful not to disturb anything.
She closed her eyes and bent closer, sniffing softly before reaching deep into her dormant powers. “Blood,” she whispered, her eyes opening. She lifted her arm, activating her omnitool to take a picture.
“Blood?”
“Mmmhmmm. I know the dead consisted of a few humans and a krogan. Whoever was able to take down a krogan with this little blood shed is a master of killing.” She grimaced. “They are probably excellent at hiding traces of who they are as well. This is probably going to end up a dead end.”
“Probably. Although it seems wrong. I wonder why a professional would come for them. The files of the deceased shows they were mercenaries with some pretty shady history.”
Nyra nodded quietly. “Curious. Mercenaries with that much of a target on their back wouldn’t come this close to the presidium, much less the Citadel unless they were looking for something or someone.”
“But what were they after?” Garrus asked.
“Hells if I know.”
“Perhaps this should be an investigation for another day? It’s starting to get late.” Garrus turned and began to head towards the skycar.
“Yeah,” she sighed and was about to follow him when she noticed a faint glimmer coming from the alleyway that was just beyond the fight. Curious, she turned around and walked into the shadowy corridor. Her vision picking out her surroundings well in the gloom.
As she neared the end, she spotted what had caught her attention, her mother’s necklace. She stopped and bent down, picking it up. She frowned. She couldn’t remember seeing it when she’d arrived all those months ago. She had thought they’d thrown it out with the rest of her clothes. Were they after me? She suddenly wondered, but she shook that thought from her head. It was impossible.
Clutching the necklace to her chest, she stood to her feet, looking at the delicate thing.
“Nyra?” Garrus called out, his voice suggesting he was at the entrance to the alley.
She jumped and quickly tucked the necklace away. “Coming! Sorry, thought I saw something but it must’ve just been my mind playing tricks on me,” she said with a shake of her head.
The turian looked at her for a moment before shrugging. “Alright then. Ready to go?”
She nodded and together the two of them headed for their skycar. As they walked away, she couldn’t help but glance back. No doubt about it, that place was probably the same alley she arrived in.
She would have to investigate it later on her own when it wasn’t a crime scene.
