Supporting a Soldier
Summary:
Sometimes there is an empty space.
(Which can be filled by the right person.)
An Aburame story.
Takes place in 1916.
Tumblr media
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Fandom: Naruto Relationship: Aburame Shibi/Original Female Character Word Count: 870 (Complete)
Though part of the Courting Culture Confusion series, this story can be read completely independently.
It was written for @aburamewaifu who asked me to write something for Shino and Shibi.
Haruka kneels and bows before the altar, lighting a stick of incense as she does every morning.
When she first married Shibi, she'd abased herself before his ancestors, promising to take care of them. It's one of her main areas of responsibility after all. As wife to a clan head and mother to a clan heir, she cares for all of the Aburame - the living and the dead.
Over time though, it has become a familiar ritual and a comforting one. Soon it will be obon and the offerings will become large and ornate, the best their family can give, but the offering today is not for family.
It's for her.
The woman whose place Haruka has taken.

One thing I hate about Naruto is that Kishimoto wasted so much potential for Sakura, Team Gai, Hyūga clan, Kurenai, Shino, and so many others.
For me, Sakura is the most wasted because she's one of the main characters, yet it didn't seem that way. Compare Sakura and the other mains. She is more like a side character who's a fan favorite like Shikamaru, expect a lot people hate her.
It makes sense to not like Sakura in the beginning. That's what character development is for. Sakura was supposed to go from boy-crazy to the strong independent heroine, and if you read the manga, it does feel that way but, in the end, she ends up with Sasuke now, that would be a problem if she didn't immediately forgive him, she was the one who told Naruto to stop seeking Sasuke because she could tell, that it was pointless and the damage is evident. Kishimoto himself said he regretted Sakura's character, failed, and said that even if he expanded on her it wouldn't raise her popularity. It was too late the damage was done. Kishimoto knew Sakura wasn't popular yet chose moments for Sakura that needed understanding of her badly written character.
All of the team members of Gai had so much potential, Gai & Lee being the best Taijutsu users, Neji being the genius of the Hyūga clan, and Tenten even though we don't see her a lot, in the manga, we don't see the fight between her and Temari, but we see a few scratches on Temari. Of course, we didn't see the official fight, and Tenten still got folded, but it's the thought that counts. It's a shame we never got to see her get better. She could have used her chakra and infused it with her weapons like Asuma does. We never got to see them fight after the Kazekage Ark, and we never saw them fight as a team, a beautiful dysfunctional team.
The Hyūga clan at the start was shown was the strongest clan, and we learned a lot about the clan during the chūnin exams. With the Hyūga clan, I see the loss of potential with using about them. Personally, I'm fine with Hyūga clan being put in the sidelines for the Uchiha clan to shine. But we only had two main characters from Hyūga clan, Hinata, and Neji. Compared to the Uchiha clan, we don't see any other characters aside from fillers. I just wished we got to learn more about the Hyūga clan and their connection to the Ōtsutsuki clan, which we only saw during the last movie.
I always feel bad for Kurenai because she was done dirty. We were told she was one of the greatest genjutsu users, and the only time we see her fight is against the greatest genjutsu user, Itachi Uchiha. Of course, she gonna lose against him, and that's the one time we see her fight apart from fillers. Then she ends up pregnant and boom she's nothing but a mother, which is fine. Most of the mothers in anime are dead, but we are told that Kurenai is a genjutsu specialist and we never got a chance to see that canonically.
Shino has shown potential in the fights we have seen him in, but we never went into depth into Shino how he uses his bugs and gets better at using them. Apparently, the Aburame clan can identify and counter genjutsu because their kikaichū don't have the brain structures for it. I mean it's a shame we didn't see especially since the show later was centered around the Uchiha clan.
Overall, the reason many characters got left out of the series or ignored was that Kishimoto focused everything on Naruto, Sasuke, and popular characters due to the fans.

Attempted Stabbing
PTSD Attack
Bruises
I fully believe Shino's hair type falls somewhere on the high 3 to low 4 ranking and you can't convince me otherwise
———————————————————————
"Akimichi-San," I try to coo, my hands up as I slowly approach the elderly man. The elderly man is still built like the brick he was during his Shinobi days. "It's alright, do you know where you are? You're at the Konoha Veterans' Retirement Center," I carefully explain, my eyes flickering from the active PTSD episode patient and my fellow nurses waiting on standby to interfere.
"Stay back!" The man yells, waving around the butter knife he's clinging to. The butter knife he was just using to split the biscuit he was going to have with his supper. Why doesn't anyone listen to me when I tell them not to give Akimichi-San any sharp object? 'He hasn't had an attack in four months it's fine so we're sure he's fine'. Obviously not.
"Alright, I can do that," I say calmly, stopping in my tracks. "Everything is alright, Akimichi-San. At the moment you're having a flashback episode. I assure you that you are safe, that your wife is safe, your kids and your grandkids. You're all safe."
"Stay back you trader! How could you betray your village?!" The man barks at me, eyes locked on me as he continues swishing the knife around. "You... you mind technique Shinobis always try to get in our heads. I don't have a wife! Let alone kids! Your, your, your little mind tricks won't work on me, trader."
     "Akimichi-San - "
"Stop calling me that! It's Captain Akimichi. I worked hard for my title, respect it!"
"Of course. My apologies Captain," I mutter, slowly bowing my head in apology. "I assure you I am unwaveringly loyal to both our village and our squad, my Captain."
The nurse in the door throws his hands up, a nonverbal 'what the hell?' shooting from him. I shrug my shoulders and use my eyes to send back a 'I don't know, I'm just going with the flow I guess?'
"No. No, no, no. You are not one of mine. You're a trader. I trader I say!" I'm yelled at again, this time paired with the man charging at me. Before I have time to react I'm slammed to the floor, Akimichi-San on top of me trying to stab me with the butter knife. Thank the Lord my coworkers react unlike me, hands flying around his wrist to keep the knife away from me as they attempt to pull him off.
The pain rippling through my body is so overwhelming that it's almost numb like I'm stuck underwater as my patient tries to stab me to death. The noise of my coworkers yelling, of me being yelled at and called a trader is muffled like I can't exactly make the sound out unless I actively try to.
At least it's all numb until an elbow is stabbed into my rib cage, Akimichi-San trying to stay on top of me, threats of my bone snapping hovering just as much as he is. I swear, at the very least I better be sent home early because of this.
————————————
The more stairs I climb, the harder I breathe. The harder I breathe, the more my side hurts. They said my ribs weren't broken, but I don't exactly believe them at the moment. The pain rippling across my body, aimed at my chest sure makes it feel like something is broken.
When I get to the top of the stairs - hunched over, panting for breath, and trying to will my body to stop hurting - the smell of cooking filters into the hallway. The single mother two doors down must be making her spicy curry again. It always makes the whole floor smell good.
I sigh as I dig through my pocket looking for my keys. The smell of cooking makes me dread the quick "just add heat" meal waiting for me. Shino has been busy prepping his students for graduation and I've been tied up at the Retirement Center pulling doubles and constant overtime. Our jobs haven't left us much time for each other recently, let alone the energy to cook or clean.
The thought of our recked apartment only fills me with more dread. Our home most definitely has not been attended to in way too long. Though, since I'm on medical leave for the next week I suppose I'll have time to cook and clean for us. The thought makes the doctor's note ordering me to rest and take my pain meds burn in my pocket. I'll have plenty of time to rest. Spending the day tomorrow cleaning won't do too much harm.
...Or not.
When the door to the apartment swings open, I'm not greeted with the recent commonly placed piles of Shino's grading sheets, the occasional disregarded clothing, the layer of dust that's been building, and the small piles of nick-nacks dumped from my scrub pockets. The yummy scent coating the apartments' hallway seems to be wafting out from our home as well.
"Welcome home, Cricket," Shino mutters, tugging my attention toward the kitchen.
"You're home early," I call back, setting my bags down before my focus shifts to changing into my house shoes.
"I could say the same to you," he counters, walking out of the kitchen, and quickly beating me to the floor. Shino sinks to a knee, propping my foot on his bent leg so he can undo my laces for me. "I did not expect you for another hour or two. It's quite the damper on my day."
"How's it a damper on your day?" I ask, my eyes trailing after his movements. Foot propped, work shoe off, house shoe on, kiss, foot down, repeat. My lover has a bad habit of saying things that come off as mean without explanation; this is one of those times. It's taken some time but I've figured out he rarely if ever means it in a mean way.
"The reason being that I wanted to clean the bathtub before you got home. Everywhere has been cleaned but I've been putting off the shower. I also wanted dinner to be finished before you returned home," he answers, leaning forward to press a string of kisses to my knee before he sets my foot down. "However it is not the end of the world, I can still clean the tub," he adds, climbing to his feet before dusting off his pants.
"You cleaned the whole house, Shi, I can clean the tub," I counter, already heading towards the kitchen to grab the cleaning supplies.
He softly hums, a hand lounging forward to grab my waist. "No, I will clean the tub," Shino mumbles, pulling on me so my back collides with his chest. His head dips down, his nose sliding up and down my neck slowly.
My breath comes out rough, threatening to be a hiss because of his fingers digging into my side. "Okay," I mutter, my focus on not having a pain-filled break-down instead of fighting with him or the soft loving touch he's littering my skin with.
Shino glances at me, a hint of curiosity in his eyes before he releases me, off to go clean the tub. He has the habit of feeling like he needs to do everything to show that he cares and I have the habit of fighting him on it, insisting that I'm capable of doing things for myself, the house, and us. After having him cling to my bruises, I hurt, and being hunched over the tub doesn't seem like the best idea to help with that pain.
After a moment - and a pile of calming breaths - I make my way into the kitchen, nosing around to see what he's cooking for dinner. Karaage. I swear if I didn't know any better I'd think Shino is trying to make me plumper.
"Cricket?" He calls the sound of his voice echoing through the house. "You should come sit with me."
"Coming," I call back, turning on my heels to head toward the bathroom.
————————————
"Alright," Shino whispers into my ear, stopping my led steps. "Open," he adds, dropping his hands from their wrapped position around my eyes.
I know what it's going to be before I open my eyes. Shino's insistence that I stay out of the kitchen and almost locking me in our room were dead giveaways that he wanted to set something special up for our dinner tonight. Still, I can't help but feel giddy when I open my eyes.
Our table is covered in a spotless white cloth, a thin red cloth lining the middle of it. Perfectly plucked and sorted flowers fill a vase in the middle of the table, my favorite flowers on display with almost sparkly fresh water. The vase is caged in by lit candles on either side of it, the soft flames being the only light in the room, eliminating the perfectly set up platings. Our main course and its sides litter the table, Shino's hard work ready to be enjoyed.
"You're a doofus," I giggle, leaning back so I can be pressed up against him once again today. "A romantic doofus but still a doofus."
"I will be more of a doofus later on," he mutters, arms snaking around my waist to pull me closer.
My teeth clench, a softly hissed breath sliding out of my nose from Shino's usually comforting touch. "You're starting to make me believe I forgot our anniversary," I tease, shifting in his hold to hopefully get him to loosen it or at the very least take some pressure off my bruises.
"It's not our anniversary," he mutters, eyebrows forwarded a bit as his arms relax, sliding down to my hips. "I have been busy with preparations and you have been busy filling in for the nurses on maternity leave. I enjoy waking up next to you, I do not enjoy it being most of the time I get to spend with you."
"Careful Shino, your emotions are starting to show," I continue to mock, getting a disapproving sigh in response, and his nose buried in my neck again. "How are you going to be more of a doofus later?" I ask, pulling myself out of his grasp and heading toward my chair.
He moves forward, taking wide strides to beat me to the chair. Shino pulls my chair out, a hand propped out for me to take. I take his hand, letting him help me into my chair before I'm pushed in. "I have prepared us a nice bath to take after we have eaten."
The thought of my bruised side flickers through my mind. The last thing Shino needs at the moment is to worry about my health. He's already stressed enough about work and when I'm hurt, his stress is at an all-time high. "I appreciate the thought but I think I'm going to bathe alone tonight," I mutter, keeping my focus on filling my plate.
"What?" He asks, his tone soaked in surprise. "My little singing Cricket, I have not bathed alone for the majority of our relationship. How often do you randomly appear in the shower with me? Every time. Every day. Not today? Why not?" By the end of his ramble, Shino looks concerned, like he might burst into tears. The shadows of the room and the soft light of the candles don't help the upsetness coating his face.
I reach across the table, wrapping my fingers around his as I rub my thumb over his knuckles. "It's nothing you did, Shi. I just... want to bathe alone. That's all."
"But that is our time together. It is something we do together. Cricket?" He races out, his kikaichus starting to spill out and buzz around the more upset he gets. "I want to take a bath with you. Why don't you want to take a bath with me?"
     "I want to, I do. I just... Shino it's not - "
He stands up, the noise of his kikaichus getting louder. "It is a big deal. That is our 'us' time. We shower together every day. Every day. I do not understand why we would not today. What do I need to do to fix it?"
I slowly blink, watching Shino hurry around the table. His hands land on me, starting to paw at me and toy with my clothes as he kneels on the ground. His eyes are swimming with concern, eyebrows forward still, and his chest pumping with quicker breaths. I didn't realize he was so attached to our daily shower. Though, he is a man of routine so I guess it's not that surprising.
"Shino," I try cooing, my side getting irritated from the constant pressure being added and taken away from it. "I think you need to calm down a bit."
"How am I supposed to calm down when you won't tell me what I need to fix?"
"Shi," I try again, cupping his cheeks, softly stroking him as I lean closer to his face. "Calm down. I'm not leaving you, I'm not angry with you, you didn't do anything wrong," I mutter, brushing a butterfly kiss against his nose, hoping it'll help him calm down. It doesn't.
"Alright, so I need to fix an outside source. I still can't fix it if you don't tell me what's wrong," he mutters, nuzzling his nose against mine back. Shino has closed his eyes, his face has gone soft from my gentle redirection that I wasn't convinced would work.
Looking at the outside layer of my boyfriend, you'd never guess how clingy and insecure the poor man is. I guess that comes with feeling and being treated like an outsider from your generation of Shinobis. I don't understand how my soft Shino could be so over-looked by his coworkers.
"I'm fine. There's nothing to worry about." Maybe it would be less stress on him if I just told him I was hurt... but then he'd stress about me getting hurt again and about my healing process. Why does Shino have to be such a worry-wart? "I'm just a little achy is all."
"From work?" He asks, clinging to my waist again, causing new sparks of pain to bloom.
"Yes," I mutter, tugging his hand down.
His eyes snap open, curiosity and worry flickering through them again. "Was there another incident?" Shino pushes, starting to slide the edge of my shirt up. I'm sure the anxious little cicada has his mind running in a million different directions.
"It's not a big deal," I try to downplay, tugging my shirt back into place. "Would you stop worrying so much? The more you worry the more I stress out about how stressed you are."
"I don't mean to make you stressed," Shino mumbles, eyes locked on me as his hand fights with mine, continuing to try and peel my shirt up. "I just want to fix what is wrong in any way I can. Let me fix it. Please?"
"Fine," I sigh, giving in and letting him raise my shirt. "No freaking out."
"I won't freak out." Shino's face fills with contentment, contentment that quickly washes away once he gets a look over my rib cage. His eyes flicker from my dark bruises to my face, his expression a mix of concern and anger. Well, as close to anger as he can muster. "You are... you are bruised."
"I am bruised," I echo, trying not to jerk away when he runs his fingertips over the marked-up skin. His eyes dance over my skin as well, getting more upset the longer he looks at the bruises.
His mouth snaps open and closed a few times as he repeatedly blinks, struggling to form a sentence. "Cricket," Shino starts, his voice slowly rising with the nickname.
"You said you wouldn't freak out."
"I'm not freaking out," he mutters, letting my shirt fall back into place. "We will have a nice supper and a relaxing bath," he continues, muttering more to himself than me as he walks back to settle into his chair. Maybe I shouldn't have given in and told him.
I carefully watch Shino's body language, waiting for his calm composure to break as he fills his plate. "My students would like to know if you'll be attending their graduation." Maybe it will be okay. Maybe Shino won't have a meltdown over this, maybe he won't stress about it.
"Of course, I will. I've already been approved for the time off."
He falls silent, slowly blinking as he stares at me, our food forgotten. "I can't let it go."
"I figured."
————————————
Shino's hands move slowly, using a towel to gently pat my bruises to dry them off with minimal pain being caused. His panic has gone down a bit since dinner, but he's still as attentive as the dotting boyfriend he is. "Does it hurt? Am I hurting you?" He asks, his touches stalling for a moment.
"You're not hurting me," I hum, sliding my hand through his hair, being careful not to pull on any of the knots. Unlike the rest of him, Shino's hair is dry since it wasn't his hair-wash day. Despite not washing it, his hair is still knotted and needs to be picked through, though I doubt he'll let me do it for him at the moment. I don't he'll let me do anything for the next week.
"Alright," he mutters, dabbing at me a few more times before he tosses the towel into the hamper. "Let's go lay you down now."
     "I'm not dying, Shi."
"I know," he snips at me, ushering me into our bedroom. "You need to rest and your bruises need to be taken care of."
I let out a sigh, taking slow footsteps so I don't get 'yelled' at again for 'over-exerting' myself. Shino's hands wander over me, being careful to avoid my wounds. "Alright, lay down on your side. You're not hurt side, the reason being it is good to elevate bruises above heart level."
"I know, Shi," I giggle, rolling my eyes at him as I crawl into the bed, lying how I was told to. I swear, sometimes he forgets I'm a nurse.
"I will be right back," he tells me, peppering my cheek with kisses before vanishing. It's not long until Shino is back, smothering my face in small kisses again as he sets his supplies down. "Alright, I am going to coat you in some peppermint oiled lotion the reason being that it'll help you heal faster and help with the color. Then we'll start your cold compress," he mumbles, once again talking more to himself than me. "The reason - "
"- being that it'll help the swelling?" I cut him off, chuckling at him again. "I know, Shino."
He falls quiet, blinking at me a few times before he shifts into motion. "I know," he finally whispers, squirting some lotion on my side. Shivers spill down my back from the cold liquid. The soft clinking of glass follows, Shino adding a few drops of peppermint oil before his hands connect with me. His kikaichus start spilling out too, pitter-pattering between the two of us and crawling over the bed sheets.
"You are beautiful. You are outstanding. You are inspiring. You are brilliant." Compliments spill from Shino as easily as his breaths. His hands are nimble and warm as he carefully rubs the lotion into my skin, being sure not to press too hard as he soothes my bruises. The feeling is lulling and comforting, the same as his smooth voice. "You are my everything," he adds, his lips falling down my side, careful to avoid the tinted lotion being massaged with his hands.
"You're amazing too, Shi," I murmur, starting to fall asleep from his pampering. "Thank you. For everything."
"Of course, Cricket," he answers, a hand falling away as the other one crawls down my back, massaging a different area. His lips trail over my arm, twirling up it before connecting with my neck. More kikaichus spill out, tumbling over their master's fingers to explore. They quickly spread their wings, the smell of the oil scaring them off, pushing them to go adventure somewhere else in the room.
Soon, a cloth-wrapped ice pack is laid on my side, just a hint of pressure added to it. "I will be calling out of work tomorrow," he mutters, softly sucking on my skin. Shino is a health nut, obviously, so he doesn't suck longer than a few seconds before finding a different patch of my neck to focus on.
"I don't need you to call out of work. I'll be fine on my own."
"I will not be going to work tomorrow. I will be here with you all day," he grumbles, his nose bumping against my jawline. My throat quickly abounded for my jaw, kisses and soft suctions continuing.
"Why is that?"
"The reason being that I miss you," he whispers, slowly making his way up to my lips. "And I wish to continue pampering you. My pretty, uninformative, stubborn, bruised Cricket." A rare chuckle comes from Shino, soft and almost silent, but still there.

Aburame: Tattoo Shop AU | DLC This is basically an additional addon to @kankuroplease's own AU. So thank her for all the good content she brings!
The Family
Occupationally Speaking. Many within the Aburame Family have taken to working with the dead as morticians or as hitmen. Usually though they'll work in teams where one is the hitmen and the other the mortician.
Some within the family have even gone to use their knowledge of insects to help expedite the process of getting rid of the bodies. Though it does help that they collectively own quite a few crematories and some graveyards too.
Also. They run a few of the garbage disposal places. Basically they are where you go to when you need to get rid of something.
Since the family makes it's living off the dead. Many find it to be creepy. Since ya know- death.
They work with both the Uchiha and Hyuga, they are a neutral ground kind of family as no matter what happens. They ofc will always be there waiting to take the dead. By their own hands or gifted.
Sometimes if the pay is good enough they'll even help smuggle things- people to wherever they're needed to be.
There are different syndicates of the family. Approximately six, they try to confuse the law by doing this and if one needs to go down they can easily replace it with another branch head.
Amongst the clan these branches are known by. Bikōchū, Kidaichū, Kikaichū, Kochū, Rinkaichū, and Shōkaichū.
The Aburame numbers always seem to stay the same amongst the gang. It isn't really obvious how many people they may or may not have.
Public schooling for the kids. Most don't even know the Aburame are in charge since they have those syndicates and what not. Though some of the higher ups kids do go to private schools. But most of the time it's all public.
The Crew
Shibi Aburame
Another childhood friend of Mikoto's but she didn't need to kick his butt for them to become cool.
Use to be a hitter but after having Shino he decided he rather work with disposing of the bodies instead of making the hits himself. Keeps him closer to home and gives him a cover up.
Met his girl in school too. Makes the off handed joke to Fugaku that he didn't need his ass kicked to know he found the one he liked. He just needed a ear full.
His wife does know of the business, he tries to make sure she and their children stay out of it. But unluckily for him Shino has joined them after seeing his adoptive brother and his father tending to a work incident.
Shino Aburame
Is going to college to become an entomologist. But is also trying to partake in the family business because he hates to see father and brother suffer alone.
In addition the way the family uses insects to decompose of the bodies gives him the ability to study them much more closely. (Shibi breathes a sigh of relief that his son is just as weird about bugs as his mother is.)
Torune Aburame
As his father, Shikuro, is often locked up for one reason or another. Torune has taken to staying with Shino's family. Unofficially adopted by them basically.
His side job is being a tattoo tech for one of his cousins. But disposal is his primary source of income when he isn't sleeping on Shibi's couch- much like his father tries to do when he isn't locked away.
Shikuro Aburame
Is alive and well in this. But is locked up and keeps getting locked up. He's practically the family fall man after an incident with his adoptive brother having thrown him under the bus.
Muta Aburame
Far off distant cousin to Tatsuma and Torune. Muta is also Torune's hand in crime as the two often are partnered up.
When he isn't working with Torune, Muta is often tending to his silk worms. He often uses them for craft works.
Tatsuma Aburame
Personal guard to the current family head Takeo.
Chews a lot of bubble gum. Uses a cigar case to carry his gum packs.
Yōji Aburame
Best marksmen out of the main family.
Takeo Aburame | Oc
Has been in charge of the family since he was fifteen. Inherited the position from his Aunt.
Wishes to pass on the title to his son already but knows he would get bored if he didn't keep it. He's far too use to the excitement the job brings and as much as he enjoys making teapots in his spare time. He finds that life in charge more fulfilling.

The Road Not Taken - part 13
Shibi x  female reader with a name - arranged marriage
Summary: Airi Nara seems a hopeless case, until her grandmother sets her up for an arranged marriage. But was marrying Shibi Aburame the right choice after all?
Masterlist ; Character sheet

Tumblr media
The track back to your cave isn’t long, but you have to tread carefully. The shadows seem alive around you, the darkness a beast, intent to swallow you whole.
You barely have any Chakra left when you leave some shadow clones scattered around the area, slip into the cave in the hopes of going unnoticed.
Iruka’s welcoming you with wide eyes, voice skittish.
“Where were you?” He asks. “Akane’s not doing good.”
You lean over her. She’s gotten a fever.
“I found the scroll. It took me some convincing to get it.”
You take one look at him, calculate the chance of someone attacking tonight.
“Get some rest.” You tell him. “I’ll take care of Akane. You’ll have to bear the brunt of any attack if it happens and we need you at your best.”
He doesn’t object, but you doubt he’s resting well, with danger licking at his heels and a dead comrade by his side.
Akane’s fever breaks two hours later and you allow your eyes to close - not to sleep, but to take a breathe and listen, to replenish your Chakra the best you can. It will be a difficult trek home. You’re not safe yet.
-.- Shibi -.-
He’s never been more glad to see the familiar walls of Konohagakure.
His gourd is strangely light on his shoulders, his Kikaichu decimated to the point that they all fit inside his body. It’s been a long time since he felt this empty.
“Ah, I’m looking forward to get home.” Kenji mutters, looking as exhausted as Shibi feels. “Toshiko’s not been feeling well lately. The pregnancy is freaking her out a little.”
“Has she talked to Airi?” He asks but is interrupted by his own Kikaichu before he can elaborate. His brows furrows and Kenji watches him with observant eyes.
“Everything good?”
“Hisoka has given birth. They’ve been waiting for our return to start the rituals. It seems to be a healthy girl.”
“Oh, that’s good.” Kenji laughs. “Hisoka was hoping for a girl. But you’re worried. What is it?”
“Airi isn’t home. Let’s check in first.”
“The Hokage-”
“The Hokage can wait.” Shibi orders curtly. Kenji follows him quietly.
-
His mother is working diligently at the kitchen table, teaching Torune how to fill capsules and press dried herbs into little pills.
Shino seems to be working on something similar, still clumsy in the way he handles the tools that are a little too big for him. It has always been his mothers approach to let children get acquainted with work as soon as possible.
Shino looks up, recognizes him and stubbornly lowers his head again.
Ah. It’s like that again.
Torune, however, jumps from his place at the table, draws as close as he dares to.
“Hello, Shibi-san.” The boy greets him calmly. “I’m glad you came home safely.”
“How was the mission?” Chiasa asks, eyeing him carefully. “How long will you have to stay put.”
Her question addresses the obvious lack of Kikaichu and he puts his gourd away, takes the few steps to the table and offers his hand to Shino who considers it for a second, before taking it, pressing his face against his arm for a second.
“Where’s Airi?” Shibi asks, directs the question at his mother.
“Left for a mission two days after you left. She’s supposed to be back today.”
“A mission? Why?”
“There was an aunty.” Torune points out. “From the Nara-Clan. She came in the morning and Mo- Airi had to make tea for her. She gave me breakfast and told me to eat with Shino in the living room and not come into the kitchen while the aunty was there.”
“It was the mean one.” Shino points out. “I tried to defend myself against her once and Mom didn’t like it. She’s very mean.”
“Who is?” Shibi asks. Shino looks up at him, blinks once as he recalls the name. “Yori. Mom called her Yori.”
Ah. He’s going to have to do something about that. Talk it through with you as soon as you’re back.
“I’ll have to meet with the Hokage.” He points out, notices how Shino immediately pulls away, hiding his pout behind his collar. “Is there anything special I should buy for Airi returning home today?”
“Chocolate.” Torune points out quickly. “There’s hardly anything left.”
“Pear Flavored Candy.” Shino comments now too. “But I want to buy them for her. I didn’t say goodbye.”
“That is a good idea. Mother, will you take them to the store after this?”
Chiasa eyes him for a second, clearly debating if she should allow him to spoil the kids. But she nods in the end.
-
You do not return that day.
Shino had been hopeful when he went to bed, Candies set out on the kitchen table as a way of greeting for when you returned..
But you don’t come home that night.
Shibi can’t even blame his son for the mood he’s in the following day, cranky and skittish.
He’s on strict rest to regain his Kikaichu as fast as possible, but he still takes the boys out for a long walk around the compound before dropping in with Hisoka for a visit.
She asks after you and he swallows around the lump in his throat as he tries his best at a calm, reassuring voice.
You’re fine. He’s made sure you’re capable of defending yourself.
He still would have liked for you to be present at the ritual. You’re usually so interested in all things Aburame and he would have loved to explain the intricacies of it. How the bond between human and bug starts and how it is maintained.
He supposes that there will be another time for this, especially considering that Toshiko is pregnant as well, but still - he misses you.
The next day, Shino’s foul mood has turned into something even more devastating.
He hides for the better part of the morning, does not eat breakfast and only comes out of hiding when Okita needs to be fed, demanding for him to move.
“You are upset.” He points out as Shino hides his face in his father’s coat.
Torune watches him over his cup of tea, face equally torn.
“Shino did not say goodbye.” Shino whimpers at Torune’s words, but allows Shibi to lift him up.
“I said I do not love her. Why? Because I did not want her to leave!”
“I understand.” Shibi holds his son close and opens his arms, a sign for Torune to step closer as well. He does so carefully, leans into the hug as best as he can.
“You’re Shinobi. You have to understand that each mission could be your last. We should always consider that our words  will be parting words.”
“What did you say when you left?” Shino asks.
“I told you all that I would stay safe.”
“Mother said that as well.” Torune remembers. “She promised she’d come back.”
“She’s not one to break a promise.”
-
Two more awful days pass.
There are no news of your mission status, no matter who he asks.
He drops in with Shikaku, explains the situation as best as he can.
“I wasn’t aware of that mission.” Shikaku shakes his head. “I thought she would start working at the hospital again. Yori was pestering me about it. She probably could have dropped out if she asked for it, especially since you were away.”
“Not if Yori asked her to do it.”
“Ah.” Shikaku nods slowly. “So you’ve noticed the power Yori holds over her? I mean, you owe that witch your marriage, in a way, but I would advise you to keep out of her way.”
“How are you talking about an elder?!” Yoshino yells from the kitchen.
“I’m just being honest! You don’t even like her yourself!”
A strange feeling takes hold of him as he watches them fight.
It won’t leave him, not when he excuses himself a short while later, nor when he stops in front of the house he knows Yori lives in.
How would he act, if confronted with that woman?
For a moment, as quick as a heartbeat, he considers the possibility of your death.
Its implication surges through him like lightning, leaves his hive buzzing in panic.
He forces the thought away immediately, cannot allow himself to pursue it further.
But its impact lingers. Your absence is too obvious.
It’s in the way Tsume’s voice is only half as loud when she talks to him. In Mikio bringing over Sakura to keep Shino occupied. It’s in Naruto’s eyes when he passes him on the street. The boy is searching for someone and he cannot fault him for that one bit. Shibi’s searching himself.
-.- Airi -.-
Your right foot has not stopped hurting for hours.
Your pretty sure your ankle is sprained and it does not help that you’re supporting Iruka’s weight with your right side. He’d taken the brunt of your last fight and it’s a testament to his quick thinking that he not only made it out alive but managed to draw the fight closer and closer to the borders of the Land of Fire.
It’s been days since you’ve got the scroll. You’re always on the move, living off whatever you can find. Today it’s been a type of moss you recognized as edible, a very skinny rabbit and as much water as you could possibly drink.
“As soon as we cross the border, we can send out a Messenger Hawk.” Akane grinds through her teeth. She’s still awfully pale, tires easily in fights, but she’s doing her best.
“Not yet.” You shake your head, the pain in your ankle intensifiying when your foot knocks against a stubborn branch. “We cannot stay put just because we’ve crossed the border. I don’t think the other Shinobi care that much about the border anyway.”
Akane glares at you. There’s something like respect in her eyes, but she’s not giving it to you lightly. It had been hard for her to accept that not only did you, a Chunin, procure the scroll she failed to get, but that you also called the shots since Daisuke died.
Jonin pride is something you’ll never fully get.
“When we get back.” She points out, taking her time to talk just like you, preserving her energy as much as she can. “You will get promoted to Jonin.”
“I’d rather not.”
Her head snaps around.
“Why not?”
“Why would I take a slightly higher pay just to have a higher chance at getting killed every day?”
“You are obviously skilled enough to be a Jonin. We need more Jonin. Would you really be this selfish? What about serving your country?”
“What is it with you people that you think serving your people means to offer yourself up to get killed?” Your voice has turned sharp. “I understand that the life of a Shinobi is a short and dangerous one. I understand that we serve to keep those alife who cannot fight. But I shouldn’t have to fear for my loved ones every single day because the teams are small to save money and they send Chunin’s out on missions that require Jonin.”
Akane’s mouth has turned into a thin line. She is not a friend of you, no matter how many times you’ve saved her life on this mission and your words are dangerous if taken out of context. But there is something that the two of you have in common.
“I am a mother.” You say with conviction. For a moment you see Yori’s face in front of you and you repeat it with vigor. “I am a mother. It is no longer my sole duty to serve my country and die a honorable death. It is now my duty to keep these boys safe and to make sure that when the time comes and they’ll have to go out, they know how to stay alife. I serve the following generations and not those who came before me.”
“I agree.” Iruka coughs and blinks. You check his vitals quickly but he’s doing good. Well, as good as he can with two broken ribs and a lot of internal bruising.
“Every time I go out on missions I don’t know if I’ll come back. And I want to do my best, but I will probably never make Jonin. I just don’t have my parents skill. But I… I think I am… good with kids. Naruto-”
“You should be a teacher.” Akane speaks like it hurts her to pull the words from her mouth. “Both of you. If you cannot see yourself out in the field for much longer, you should teach the following generation. Because you have skill, obviously. Otherwise you would no longer be alive. I’ve seen you fight.”
Iruka laughs and you wonder if he’s got a fever as well.
“I’m a poor Orphan who failed his first Chunin exam. They will never let me become a teacher.”
“They will. I have an idea.” A shiver runs down your back. “But we need to find cover now. There’s someone following us again.”
-.- Shibi -.-
Four days after you should have returned a search party leaves Konoha.
Tsume is on it, as well as Kenji. They have nothing to go off but the original mission instruction and their Kekkai Genkai.
Shibi longs to be part of that search party, but even without the fact that he’s missing half of his Kikaichu he cannot bring himself to leave his boys behind.
Only half an hour after the search party has left the village there’s a sharp knock on his door.
He opens, surprised to find Kakashi, no Anbu mask in sight.
“Can I help you?”
“Yes. I’d like you to appoint me as a secondary Search Party.”
There’s a moment of silence. None of them speak.
Somewhere behind Kakasi another figure appears.
“Me as well.” Might Guy declares with too much enthusiasm for a topic like this. “Asuma and Kurenai want to come as well, they are currently packing their things.”
“This is a nice offer.” Shibi steps outside and closes the door behind him. “But the first Search Party is very well suited for this mission. Enthusiasm alone will not make your talents match those of an Inuzuka or an Aburame.”
“We have information-” Kakashi starts but is interrupted by Might Guy who grabs his friends shoulder like his life depends on it. “My friend here-” “Rival.” “My Rival here has vested interest in the return of Iruka Umino. I myself have gotten pestered by the young Rock Lee about the whereabouts of his mother. We want to help and we might just have gotten information that the original Search Party lacks.”
Shibi turns to look at Kakashi who’s doing his best at looking as bored as possible.”
“Explain yourself.”
“It is about the child.” Kakashi presses out. “I have promised my Sensei that I will look after the Child. You have probably noticed that Naruto has been looking for Iruka.”
Shibi fights back a sigh. “Very well. Let’s take a short walk and discuss the matter.”
-
It’s not a small sum that he has to pay to employ four high-class Jonin - one of them still mostly part of the Anbu - on a second Search Mission. He doubts they will have more success than the team made up of Shinobi who are trained for Search and Rescue. But if there is something he can do, no matter how small, he has to do it.

Some Abruame OCs!
It's Shino's birthday so I rushed to colour the lineart I commissioned from @calvin-arium!!
Tumblr media
I have a bunch of other Aburame OCs (I have a master post about them here!) and I hope to do more eventually, but it was only right to start off with Shino and his closest family.
[CW: mentions of death and infant death, mention of homophobia]
Shikie is Shibi's father and the clan head at the time of my main Aburame fic, The Smell of the Rain (circa 2025, blank period). She was a young girl when the clan first joined Konoha under the impulsion of Kodama, her mother and the first hive-bearer. She became the clan head after her in her 50's. She is very much a shinobi of the old guard and has been alive through both the warring state period and the 70 years of global wars that followed. While she does, to a certain extent, support the Shinobi Alliance, she is also still very wary of its future, and has learned to secure the safety of her clan above any other matter. She has had to make sacrifices for it throughout her life, but knowing that her people are where they are today, alive and well, eases a lot of her regrets. (Although, of course, never all of it.) She and Shibi are very different in a lot of ways, but she is proud of him, and he will most likely be the one to inherit her place in the near future.
Yoshino was Shikie's second son and Shibi's younger brother. Very talented Shinobi from a young age, he was promoted to Chuunin during the first exam opening after the Second War, alongside his teammate Amanmori Nagomi. They kept working together a lot after that, working on combined attacks that used Yoshiki's hive as a catalyser and guide for Nagomi's Lightning Release. They started dating as teens, secretly at first, then shortly in front of Nagomi's family, who came from a civilian background with much different pressure surrounding relationships and bloodlines. He came out to his mother shortly before the Third War, who answered she couldn't, given the political context and the state of their clan at the time, be supportive of a childless union. Both young men were deployed together during the Third War, and died in the same battle.
Mahono was born to the Sarutobi clan, of Sarutobi Natsumasa, Hiruzen's older brother. She was a skilled Fire Release user, a technique she used both alone and in combination with chakra blades. She faced Shibi during their first Chuunin exam and overpowered him quite significantly (although, to his defence, the age difference did probably play against him). She still took note of his persistence and willingness to take risks in battle. They met again later and became sparing partners, him to improve his hand-to-hand combat, her to improve her options against wide-range techniques. She joined the Anbu in her late teens and he eventually first asked her out when he was 17 and her 20, a couple years before the Third War started. They had a first daughter shortly after the Third War, Yukatomu, who died from hive implantation-related complications during her first days of life, and then Shino a bit over two years later. She died on a mission when he was five.

Brief Description:
Chihiro has black hair, and she keeps it long and fluffy as per tradition in her clan. She has pale skin and blue eyes.
She comes from an ancient shinobi clan, whose Kekkei Genkai allows them to fully transform into animals as well as call upon local wildlife for assistance (usually for recon and spying; combat not too often). According to clan legend, their founder was a wolf god, so the wolf is often used as a symbol of the clan; they also have close relations to a wolf pack in the mountains who say that their founder was the same god. Women are traditionally the leaders of the clan (it’s not a requirement but that’s kinda just how the chips fall in most generations).
Chihiro has Fire Chakra nature, which is common in her clan. Will definitely fight and win. Does not take failure lightly. Her bite is way worse than her bark for sure. Doesn’t like strangers (she’ll default to high formalities with them), but loves her friends dearly. Met Neji during their academy days, and became best friends with Tenten after meeting her when they became genin.

Aunt Shima my beloved
Just shy of 50
Retired iryo-nin
Used specialized grubs that patch injuries with dissolving silk.
Your personal bubble exists to be invaded
weird aunt energy
Manic Pixie Dream GILF tbh
Easily flip-flops between bickering and bubbly and it's completely genuine
Was actually a bit of a punk as a teenager, fucked around and found out
Lost an infant during the Nine-Tails Attack and subsequently became a wetnurse
Looks after all the orphans and badgers everyone to take care of themselves
Handles a lot of the womanly things as the clan is a little old-fashioned in that way. Functionally-but-not-actually a matriarch.
Even though she is very playful she knows exactly what she's doing and is always in charge.
Considers herself a mother to ~30% of the clan; stfu you're all my babies
You are not leaving the compound without eating, don't even think about it
Spoils the fuck out of Shino. He is completely oblivious to this. If he doesn't like a dish, she makes sure it's never on the menu again.
Waves off her own issues because she considers them minor compared to the losses of other clan members
(looking in the mirror) Stop crying, it won't do any good. And anyway, you've got a lot of work to do, starting right now.
From Shibi's side of the family, also closely related to Muta.
As such, she's on the tanner side, with medium-brown hair peppered with gray.

My Gay Naruto Ships and How They’d Have Kids
CW: mentions of reproduction
NejiNaru - insemination with Hinata or Hanabi as the surrogate and Sakura as their doctor. Neji did most of the arranging and planning beforehand, Naruto acted as support for everyone involved and told the Hyuga elders to shove it when they inevitably tried to stick their nose in their business.
ShikaKiba - insemination/reciprocal IVF with Hana as the surrogate or adoption. Neither of them entirely knew what they were getting themselves into, but their moms were there every step of the way. Hana and Kiba made jokes about her ruining the child’s health before Yoshino shut down any mentions of any harm coming to her grandchild.
TemaHina - ROPA method with Temari providing the egg and Hinata carrying the child (Kou provided the sperm). Temari has lingering anxiety related to childbirth from her mother’s death, so she didn’t want to get pregnant and she is absolutely at Hinata’s side every step of the way. Hinata helped to sooth a lot of that anxiety even if she was anxious about everything too (it was more of a good anxious though). They might also go with insemination with Hinata carrying, but their whole relationship was already a political minefield and getting Gaara and Kankuro more biologically involved would’ve added to that (especially Gaara).
ShinoLee - adoption. It was the only choice. Lee wanted to follow in Gai’s footsteps in adopting YOUTH and Shino found the other options to be too invasive. Friends and family are very much involved in the process of adopting and the raising of their child. Their child is the Aburame clan and Team Gai’s child.
KisaSaso - artificial reproduction using jutsu and ninja technology. It would’ve been faster and cheaper to go the artificial fertilization or adoption rout but 1. Sasori wanted as much control over the process as possible 2. neither of them had a surrogate in mind to begin with and didn’t feel like kidnapping a kid off the street (no they didn’t consider adopting through legal means) and 3. Sasori, in part, wanted to prove he could do it. Orochimaru may have helped and Sasori kept a close eye on them the entire time. In a modern au, they would’ve settled on adoption.
KakuDei - adoption or Sasori’s artificial reproduction. They probably considered surrogacy but quickly realized that they didn’t have anyone they trusted to carry their child. Konan was the closest one to that but she wasn’t comfortable with it. They do trust Sasori though and that worked out (Kisame may or may not have had to convince Sasori to actually help them). Yes adoption and Sasori’s method being cheaper for them played a major part in their decision.
HidaIta - pretty much any route. One of the artificial fertilization routes with Izumi as the surrogate in an everyone lives/modern au, adoption (via Hidan picking a kid up off the street or Itachi adopting legally), foster care in a modern au, Sasori’s method or Orochimaru helping using a method similar to how they made Mitsuki (though both would probably be suspicious/hesitant at first), or even coparenting/one of them already having a kid from a previous relationship/one of them having a kid because they were a godparent in an au. When it comes to having a family, they aren’t picky.

How come Katsura has three kids with Shino and only one with Madara? Also, which man do you like Katsura with the most?
Katsura was originally made for Shino ✨
As for the number of children differing, there are a few reasons to that;
the first being that she never sees herself becoming a mother, so growing a large family is the last thought she’d have.
With Madara, she feels uncertain. Not about their love (she loves very deeply and wholeheartedly), but about the future as a whole.
She knows he loves a good fighting opponent. His strength is part of his charm
But if he dies, what would happen to her and their young child(ren)? Can he honestly promise that he’ll always come back to her? That if the fight weren’t survivable, he would retreat
If he could look her in the eye and swear he would always return to them, she’d give him as many children as her body would allow
But if not, she would rather only have their one child to protect if it comes down to that vs. having to tend to a flock of children while trying to survive.
On the opposite side; if his brothers and mother are alive, she’d feel a lot more comfortable with having more children and less like they’re on borrowed time.
With Shino, she’s known him so long and the Aburame have always treated her kindly. So when the time came, starting a family with Shino felt right/safe
Twins run in Katsura and Aori’s family. Aori knew about this and has mentioned it but, Aori also loves babies more than Katsura. Who automatically tunes her out when she gets into her baby fever-like rambling.
She was NOT trying to have 3 kids, she just thought it would be nice for Shigeki to have a sibling and felt secure in doing so given how calm and cozy their lives were
Cried for a week and even had Hinata byakugan check her because she wanted it to be a lie. But nope, they were there. So three kids it is.

↳ Thank you for doing Matchups
Tumblr media
↳ #SHINO ABURAME
❦ Shino Aburame raises an eyebrow at you as you crack a dirty joke, why would anyone in their right mind say things like that? It may baffle him but that doesn’t stop him from cracking a smile. Well, that’s what at least you hoped he would do. You couldn’t really see his mouth or eyes as a matter of fact but when you did, you were thrown away. He was so… beautiful.
❦ He rests a hand on your shoulder or nudges you to get you back into reality as Tsunade explains some stupid mission. You look up at him, a pout on your face and your nose scrunched up. On the inside, he smiles. But on the outside, he scolds you to pay attention.
❦ He isn’t really the witty type. You, on the other hand, are a witty person. But he is so… how do I say it exactly? Straightforward in a way. He doesn’t even mean to say anything offensive or witty but when you called his big ugly, he claimed if the bug was ugly, what were you? And Kiba’s childish behaviour broke out laughing and never let you go for the rest of your life. To this day, he still jokes about Shino’s comment. But in all honesty, Shino didn’t even mean to say that. It just came from his mouth and he doesn’t understand the whole fuss about it. But Kiba will be Kiba.
❦ He loves you all his life but according to him, please don’t hurt yourself. He will always try to prevent you from doing anything reckless but he won’t always be with you on mission. And whenever you go on a solo mission, or, god forbid, a mission with Kiba, he starts acting like a mother sending their child off to school on their first day.
❦ RUNNER UP: HINATA HYUGA AND SHIKAMARU NARA
Tumblr media
↳ #TOGE INUMAKI
❦ Toge is so much like you. Despite choosing opposites attract for most of my matches, I felt like Toge would be able to see the real you. Due to his powers and quiet demeanour, people often assume he is cold but in fact he is incredibly caring. And a little silly too but that's beside the point. You give so much love to others, so he gives you his with equal dedication. Say something witty? He will say something back, an endless banter born.
❦ While you are a lit flame, he is the water to help you calm down. But he is also like the wind. He helps you grow even further, making sure to be by your side at all times too.
❦ Whenever he sees you down or tense before a battle, he says something to lighten you up and make you smile. To sort of assure everything is ok. When Shoko told you Toge lost his arm, you ran towards his room, hoping Shoko was lying. But he was there with only one arm and a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. And when he cracked a joke (probably relating to having one arm) you felt so angry at him but instead of scolding him, you broke down crying. Crying because you are glad he is alive.
❦ Whenever Toge sees you break down in a dance, he joins! The more the merrier. But seriously, you look so adorable and brown eyes shining so brightly that it makes his heart burst.
❦ RUNNER UP: ITADORI YUJI AND GETO SUGURU

The High School AU Part 2
More profiles to go along with Sorry, I Didn't Know I Had To Stay The Same using makowka's oc maker
The Inuzuka and Aburame Families
Tsume Age: 39 Occupation: Dog walker and trainer
Tsume had always wanted to be a vet -- unfortunately, her undiagnosed ADHD and eventual teen pregnancy got in the way of that. But she loves animals, she relates the best to dogs, and she was firm in her want to work with them for the rest of her life.
So at nineteen, with a fresh baby in a sling around her back, she started up a dog-walking business. Now she employs people under her (and still walks dogs of her own accord)
She's a rough soul, blunt and to the point, but loves her kids with her whole heart.
Tumblr media
Hana Age: 20 Occupation: Student (veterinary science) and dog trainer
Hana often feels like the only person in her family who takes life seriously. Her mother is full of life, living impulsively and on the edge. And her little brother refuses to take his epilepsy seriously, instead choosing to ignore signs of it in favour of roughhousing with his friends.
She balances working as a dog trainer, after years of experience with her mother's business, and studying to become a vet, hoping to one day open a clinic that treats and trains medical assistant dogs, like Akamaru.
Having grown up close to (and eventually crushing on) Itachi, Hana still doesn't know whether to believe that he did what they say he did or not.
Tumblr media
Kiba Age: 15 (birthday July 7th, turned 15 before the school year started) Occupation: Student, occasionally helps with Tsume's dog-walking business
Kiba was only five when he had his first tonic-clonic seizure, and it rapidly became something he had frequently. With medication it came mostly under control, but in his early teens it started to get harder and harder to keep on top of, and now he has a medical alert dog, Akamaru, who can tell when he starts having pre-symptoms and has him lie down.
Unfortunately for Akamaru, Kiba has other priorities. He takes after his mother in not taking life too seriously, and often favours just getting on with his day, rather than pause to rest when needed.
Tumblr media
Shibi Age: 42 Occupation: Entomology professor (specialising in beetles)
Shibi, contrary to popular belief, has always been a very family-oriented man. When his sister died, he and his wife took in her son Torune without question -- and when his wife died shortly after his son Shino was born, he wasted no time in ensuring he could work from home and balance being a sole parent along with his career.
He, along with the rest of his family, has fairly poor vision along with light sensitivity, and so he wears prescription sunglasses most of the time. This also helps him avoid eye contact.
Shibi would stop at nothing to help his sons succeed in a world that isn't made for them.
Tumblr media
Torune: Age: 20 Occupation: Student (entomology and medicine, focusing on venomous insects and treatments for their stings)
Torune has no memories of his biological parents, but he doesn't mind that so much. Shibi stood in for them and cared for him when nobody else could, and he got a little brother out of the deal, too.
Following in Shibi's footsteps in a lot of ways, Torune found a love for insects at a young age, and found himself drawn to the macabre side of poisons and venom that came along with them. Being autistic, along with the rest of his little family, he found it easy to lose himself in his study.
Torune was in the same year and classes as Hana, Fu, and Itachi growing up, and was shocked along with the rest of his classmates when Itachi did what he did.
Tumblr media
Shino Age: 14 (birthday January 21st) Occupation: Student
Shino was lucky enough to make friends with Kiba at a fairly young age, and Hinata joined their little neurospicy crew a year or so later. Having someone by his side that was brave and headstrong made it a lot easier for Shino to exist in his quiet little shell, and while he frequently did have big emotions, they were mostly contained to whatever he could express using his AAC.
He's definitely gotten better at it though, and as his circle of friends has grown, so has his ability to communicate -- and his ability to recognise and act on his feelings.
Now, with a crush having entered the picture, Shino is going to do his best to make himself understood. Without Kiba's help.

I apologize for the delay - my health hasn't been the best. Future updates may be slow, but they will keep coming.
Tumblr media
“Mom.” You find yourself back in your house, Shino in front of you.
“Shino.” You blink. “I’m okay.”
He doesn’t look convinced but lets you get up from the Couch.
Your knees are wobbly and you could use something to eat, but otherwise, you’re fine.
Torune is sitting stiffly on a pillow not far from you.
“Hey, Torune.” You keep your voice soft as you kneel down next to him.
“How are you doing?”
“I’m fine.” His voice is as stiff as his posture.
“It’s okay to be sad.” You pull Shino closer to you and he lets you, leans into your touch and looks over at Torune, a boy he’s only learned to know as strong and talented.
“I need to stay strong.” Torune whispers. “I need to be ready for the burial.”
You stretch out your hand, wanting to touch him, to comfort him. Torune moves back on instinct, brows furrowed now.
“Don’t touch me. It’s dangerous.”
“Okay. I’m sorry. No touching, I promise. Do you… Want to eat something?”
Torune looks at you in silence for a long time before he nods slowly.
.
This is where Shibi finds you.
At the kitchen table, making Onigiri with the boys.
Your eyes find his. Even with his eyes hidden behind sunglasses you can see how affected he is by the sudden death.
“Sit.” You point at the chair on your left. “Eat.”
He doesn’t object, his body falling heavy into the chair. His arm meets yours as he moves to grab an Onigiri, his shoulder barely grazing yours.
But you push into the contact, hope that he understands.
You’re here. Ready for him to lean onto you should he need to.
Now that Shibi is by your side, it feels like you can take a breath, can take a step back.
.
Shino and Torune are quiet, but it’s not the awkward silence you’ve seen when Shikamaru comes around. Shino doesn’t seem uncomfortable, not confused by the grief.
Instead he leans in almost eagerly, watching Torune work with steady hands.
Torune’s stiff limbs seem to warm under Shino’s attention. He gingerly offers one Onigiri to the younger boy, blushing faintly when Shino bites into eat with a nod of thanks.
You smile and look back at Shibi, surprised to see him nodding into the direction of his bedroom.
“One minute.” You tell the boys and get up, following Shibi up the stairs.
.
“Torune’s mother died shortly after he was born.” He relays calmly to you as soon as the door of your bedroom clicks shut behind him. “His closest relative is his grandmother, who was my mother’s cousin. She’s willing to take him in, but age hasn’t been kind to her and Torune’s type of insect isn’t easy to handle.”
“So we take him in.” You offer and Shibi halts completely.
“What?” He asks, voice suddenly hoarse. You must have taken him by surprise completely.
“I’ve been in his shoes. Having someone taking him in is far better than what most kids experience but just handing him over to the closest relative can go really wrong really fast.”
“As the Clan head it’s my responsibility to look after him,” Shibi starts but doesn’t end his sentence.
You look at the room in front of you then back to him.
“He can take my room.” You offer. “We can take him in.”
“Airi.”
“Isn’t that why you asked me up here?” You ask back. “You knew how I think about the topic.”
“Naruto can’t come over. Why? Because Torune cannot be touched. Skin on Skin contact is deadly with his kind of insect. Shino is well aware of it, but other children his age might not understand.”
You swallow thickly and nod. “I understand. I can still help Naruto in a different way, but… Torune needs us now. Unless there’s someone else you think would be able to give him a home?”
There’s a beat of silence before Shibi shakes his head.
“But are you really… okay with sharing my room?”
“Are you?” You ask back, surprised to watch a faint blush appear on his cheeks.
-
The burial is held at night. It’s hard to tell in the dark but it seems like every member of the Clan attends it, holding a candle up to pay respect, as Shiruko’s body burns.
A few of the poisoned bugs have been taken off him, quarantined for further examination, but all the others, Torune’s and Shiruko’s alike, burn in the flames, to dangerous to keep alive.
Torune stays at your side and no one seems to question it.
When Shibi comes over to stand next to you, you lean into him.
His body, warm and strong, is like an entirely different fire, licking up your skin.
You’ve never been so aware of him as you are now, knowing that in a few hours, you will share a bed with him for the first time.
But before that, you take the boys to bed.
Shino’s so tired, he falls asleep in your arms just moments after you started telling him a good night story. You tuck him in and press a kiss to his temple, relieved that he seems so unaffected by what’s been going on.
He’s not shown any jealousy toward Torune once, shared your attention amicable like you’ve never seen before.
“You’re the best boy,” You murmur into his soft hair, heart swelling with affection for him.
.
Torune’s wide awake in your old bed, the few belongings he brought over fitting in your night stand.
“Here.” You pull a Quilt from the closet and spread it over his legs. “This is my present to you.”
“What is it?”
“It’s a blanket that my mother made for me when I was little. My parents died when I was about your age.”
“Why do you give it to me then?”
“I want you to know that you’re loved. So much. The whole Clan is watching out for you. And… because we can use it to cuddle.”
Torune cocks his head in confusion. “How?”
“Well, if you wrap the Blanket around you, I can hug you without touching your skin. So I gift it to you, to use it wisely.”
Torune rubs the fabric between his fingers, falling quiet.
You settle on the chair next to his bed, watching him patiently.
“I’m going to sleep now.” He points out eventually. “Are you going to stay here until I fall asleep? Like you did with Shino?”
“Do you want me too?”
He looks away for a moment.
“It’s okay if you want to. It’s also okay if you don’t want to. Two things can be okay at the same time.”
“Five more minutes?” Torune asks and you nod with a smile.
“Sure. Do you wanna hear a story?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright, settle in then. You comfortable? I’ll tell you the tale about the little bear and the moon.”
You wait for him to curl into the sheets, his gaze intense on you as you smile, recalling the story your father told you so many times before, every time you felt sick with worry about them going on a mission.
“There was once a little bear, who was friends with the moon. He was about your age and just as smart too…”
-
“The kids are asleep.” You tell Shibi when you step into his room.
You have been in here before, moving some of your stuff into his drawers.
Some of the shyness you had felt right after the wedding takes hold of you, but you force yourself to keep going.
This is Shibi. You know him. You might even love him.
“Do you want to sleep closer to the wall?” He asks, putting down the book he’d been reading at his desk. Even now he’s wearing his glasses.
You wish he’d pull them off, the longing for it so sudden and strong, it surprises you.
Your hand twitches with the need to pull his glasses off his face, just so you can see his eyes again and you turn away from him to bite into the soft inside of your cheek.
“Airi?” He asks and you take a shuddering breath.
“Where do you sleep?” You ask, keeping your voice steady.
“I’ve slept near the window before. Why? It was simply easier.”
You smile, his usual way of talking setting you at ease instantly.
“I’ll sleep closer to the wall then.”
You move, grab your sleeping attire and change in the bathroom, press your temple against the cool tile to combat your thoughts. It doesn’t help much.
-
“Hey.” You’re on your side, hands folded under your head in the hopes that it will keep them from Shibi. “How are you feeling? About Shiruko? And today?”
He’s settled in bed, sunglasses still on, posture a little stiff like you know him to be.
Shibi sighs.
“I am not sure.” He admits finally. “How are you feeling?”
“Weird.” His eyes flicker to you and you send him a small smile, still itching to touch him, to see his eyes. “It feels like it’s been a week instead of just one day. I’m glad Torune seems to be relatively okay for now, and so is Shino, but I’m worried. To be confronted with Death so early…”
“It’s a testament to the growth of your Village that they’re not fighting yet.”
You swallow around the unsaid words. “Yeah.”
Silence falls over you. At some point, Shibi seems to think that it’s time to sleep as he turns off the lights.
You hear him move, guess that he’s removing his glasses now, at least.
The urge to touch him is so strong now, it makes you jolt.
“Are you-” He asks at the same time you speak. “Shibi?”
“Yes?”
“Could I touch you?”
“Of course.” His voice is smooth, but it carries some worry.
You lean forward, your eyes straining against the dark. Your fingertips find his jawbone and you can feel him tense under your touch. But he doesn’t move away and you pull yourself closer.
Your thumb ghosts over his cheek, the slight stubble around his jawline, finds the line of holes under his eyes.
“I miss seeing your eyes.” You whisper, unable to stop yourself. His cheeks warm under your touch and you realize that he’s blushing.
Something tickles your fingertips and you realize that some of his kikaichu have moved out from beneath his eyes.
“Hey little guys…” You whisper in greeting, almost missing how Shibi’s breath catches at your words.
“Could I…” You swallow thickly, barely daring to say it out loud. “Kiss you?”
Instead of words, his hands find your shoulders and hold you steady.
For one terrible moment you think he’s stopping you, but before you can speak again his lips touch yours.
It’s the softest of all touches, his lips barely grazing yours and you move to return the kiss instantly, your mind flooded with all of him.
Shibi smells good, so distinctly him that you think you’d notice it everywhere, even without the nose of an Inuzuka. His lips are dry, but not chapped and his hands, big and warm, are cradling you close.
You dig one of your feet into his blanket, find his and graze your toes against the underside of his foot, giggling as he jerks away in surprise.
“Sorry.” You can’t stop giggling. “Are you ticklish?”
“Don’t tell.” You move to follow him, not willing to let go of him yet. Not when it feels so good to be so close to him.
“Never.”
It’s quiet for a moment, a comfortable Silence that you hate to break but he’s too far away for comfort.
“Shibi? Can you kiss me again?”
-.- Shibi -.-
Shibi wakes with your face pressed against his shoulder, your legs tangled with his, your arms slung around his midsection. You are holding onto him just as much as he’s holding onto you.
This is new. New for the two of you, new for him entirely. Zoka had always had trouble sleeping and more often than not she’d slept in a separate room so that he would not disturb her sleep. And even when sharing the same bed he’d kept his distance out of respect, knowing how much she feared his Kikaichu.
You do not seem to share that sentiment.
Still, he calls back the Kikaichu that have escaped him in his sleep.
They tell tales of exploring the soft skin of your neck, of tasting the edges of your Chakra.
His Kikaichu are curious about you, consider you a part of him just as much as Shino even with how little they still know.
.
You move when he does, eyes blinking against sleep trying to pull you back under.
“Shibi?” You ask, your voice as soft as your skin. You hold onto him with a strong grip. “Where are you going?”
“Go back to sleep.” He asks. “Why? It’s still early.”
“Are you leaving?” There’s something in your voice he cannot translate into words. But it sounds like he feels, needy for your affection, but unwilling to admit it.
“I’m meeting up with Kenji and the others. If we want to catch the one who did this to Shiruko, we’ll have to act fast.”
You lean in and press your lips to his. He can feel the emotion simmering beneath the gesture, too much to decipher in the short time he has.
His hands are in your hair, holding onto you like he’s drowning and you’re the shore, as he kisses you back.
It’s only when his Kikaichu remind him - painfully - that he needs to go, that he pulls back, breathless and dazed. He can’t look at you, overwhelmed by the response of his body to you but you pull him back, press your temple against his shoulder.
“Come back safe.” You urge him, allowing him to hide his face in your hair.
“I will.”
-
“What’s your favorite fruit?” Shino’s voice rings loud and clear through the house as Shibi steps inside.
“I love pears.” Your voice answers calmly but there’s an edge to it that keeps him at the door, listening intently.
“I am named after them.”
“You are?” That’s Torune, his voice a little deeper and lower.
“Yes, the name Airi is written with two Kanjis. One means favorite because I’m my parent's favorite child and one means Pear Tree. They planted one when I was born because my mother loved the fruit so much.”
“Where’s that tree now?” Torune asks as Shino interjects with a rundown of the insects that love pears.
You wait patiently until Shino has exhausted his knowledge about pear-loving insects before answering Torune.
“It’s still in the garden of our old house. When my parents died I moved out, just like you did.”
“Would you recognize it?” Torune is surprisingly interested in that tree, Shibi thinks, but your answer distracts him from that thought. There’s that edge again, this time it’s more pronounced. You sound like you’re just short of crying.
“I carved my name into the bark when I got my first kunai. I’d recognize it everywhere.”
Before you can say more, a Kikaichū crosses Shibi’s path and he clears his throat, intent on making himself known before Shino realizes he’s already here.
“I’m home.” He calls out. “Where is everyone?”
.
It’s not a conscious thought until he lays awake at night, unable to forget.
He should be thinking about other things. the slow going process of gathering information, the possible suspects responsible for Shiruko’s death, the fact that he’s going to have to leave tomorrow for who knows how long…
But somewhere on the Nara residence is a tree that means something to you. Something you had to leave behind not because you wanted to but because you were forced to as a child.
He slips out of bed, careful not to disturb you, and leaves the house.
All he wants is to find the tree, that’s what he’s telling himself.
But when he finds that the tree is infested with Pear Psylla, clearly not properly cared for, his Kikaichū get to work.
.
You don’t rise when he gets back into bed but he wakes up hours later - much too early for his liking - when you get out of bed.
He keeps his eyes closed to give you privacy but his ears are way too sensitive not to hear you gasp when you look out the window.
“That’s not-” He can hear you turn, unsure if he should open his eyes under your gaze.
“Shibi.” Your voice has that edge to it again and he blinks to look at you. Tears are already forming around your lash line. “Did you really-?” Your voice breaks and he nods wordlessly.
You don’t need more, already spinning around, rushing out of the room in your sleepwear.
He follows after you as quickly as he can and passes Shino and Torune playing quietly in the living room.
“What’s going on?” Shino asks, not as quick as Torune to get up and follow the procession out the door.
The tree is at the back of the house, shielded from the streets outside the Aburame compound but placed just right - to get enough sun and to be always in view of the bedroom window.
It’s not a massive tree, it’s stumped growth a sign of a lack of care, but you’ve wrapped your arms around it, sobbing into the bark.
“Why is Mom crying?” Shino asks.
You turn around with tear-stained cheeks and a smile.
“I’m sorry. I always cry when I’m happy.”
“You’re happy?” Torune’s voice is full of disbelief. “Why?”
“Why? Because this is my pear tree! Come, see!” You usher them forward, showing them the crude drawing in the bark.
“How did it get here?” Torune, always the voice of reason, is not done with his questions, while Shino is already examining the leaves in search of insects, carefully balanced on your shoulders.
“I found it and brought it here,” Shibi explains and you turn to look at him, an emotion in your eyes he hasn’t seen before. It’s warm and all-compassing, like the first sun in spring.
He doesn’t want to leave. Not now, not when it’s like this.
But when you press a little closer as he hugs you goodbye, he knows that you’ll be okay. Torune’s a steady presence by your side, watching everything with careful eyes.
“Stay safe.” You tell Shibi, words heavy with emotion. “Please.”
“I will.”
