Part 4 of Secrets of the Heart
Madara-sama lifts the dish of sake, holding Hashirama-sama's eyes as he sips to seal the peace, but Hikaku looks elsewhere.
There are many here who do not appreciate what these two men have made, discontented members from both clans, and a gathering like this is always fraught with danger for all.
He doesn't stare, instead letting his Sharingan drift across faces, alert for the slightest hint of an expression which doesn't belong. It's why he catches the twitch of lips, a suppressed smile of triumph, when Madara-sama coughs, once at first and then hard enough to bend over, shaking like a willow in the wind.
"Poison in the cup!" It's just one voice initially, but the cry builds, first to three, then more. "The Senju have poisoned Madara-sama!"

Hikaku leaps across the branches, ignoring the soft peach blossom petals which brush against his cheek. Their beauty is a distraction he can't afford, not with an opponent like this.
"You could cook anything, I don't mind." Madara-sama doesn't even sound out of breath, just one more sign of how unevenly they're matched. "I'd eat whatever you make."
"Very kind of you." The gunbai comes sweeping towards his neck and Hikaku jumps down to a lower branch to avoid it, feeling the wind of its passing whip through the tails of his hair. "And what do I get if I win?"
"Um." His clan head doesn't have an answer to that question, not unexpected since no one would predict that outcome, and Hikaku laughs under his breath. "The same, I suppose? I can make a meal for you?"
"I only have a limited number of years in this world," he turns just enough to fling a brace of kunai before resuming his flight. "I would rather not spend them eating your cooking."

"No, I don't mean that!" Kisame grabs him by the shoulders, dragging him upright, and Itachi instinctively catches the poor animal before it falls off his hand. "I mean… how are you here?"

Izuna, pointing at the dead rabbit: Well, it will rot before you can eat it. You don't want to eat food that will make you sick, right?
Weasel, downcast: No…
Izuna, hugging it comfortingly: So that's why you don't kill more than you can eat.
Tobirama, producing a storage scroll: Or at least more than you can safely store.
All the weasels, immediately surrounding Tobirama: More?!
Izuna, pinching the bridge of his nose: Tobirama… I was trying to teach them something! You can't just enable them!
Tobirama, looking up from packing rabbits into the scroll: It will run out of space eventually, so they'll learn it then anyway. Besides, it's my job as your alpha to enable you and your summons.
Izuna, laughing: … you are so lucky I like the way you smell!
Tobirama, kissing him on the cheek: Very lucky indeed.

"No." Tobirama puts it down and picks up another one, despite his disagreement, so Hashirama knows he wasn't wrong.
"It doesn't have to be like this, you know." He puts his elbows on his knees, resting his chin on his linked fingers as he watches his brother work. "You could just say you like him."
"Like you did?" Tobirama sounds scornful, but Hashirama just grins cheerfully. "Never."

The direct sequel to Shadows in Spring
Hikaku winces as his clan head shoves Hashirama-sama to the ground.
Really, this sort of thing should be far beneath Madara-sama's dignity, but of course no one can convince him of that. Hikaku doesn't long for the days of the war, but there were certain side benefits of all the fighting that he misses.
The way the two clan heads didn't turn into little boys at the merest hint of a disagreement, for one.
"Madara!" Hashirama-sama yanks on Madara-sama's hair, unbound even upon the occasion of his brother's wedding. "Stop it! Let me up!"
"No!" Madara-sama makes things even worse by seizing a handful of dirt and stuffing it into his friend's kimono, making Hashirama-sama yelp with both surprise and indignation. "Not until you admit that Tobirama's an Uchiha now!"
