Author’s Note — hi y’all! i have been working on this for quite literally over a year, and i still am not happy with it. but today is kaeya’s birthday, and i figured i’d post it anyway even though the ending is pretty rushed and the whole thing is kind of messy. hopefully it’s still good! this is a sequel to my other kaeya × reader fic, “(insert interesting title here)”, but you don’t have to read that first. i listened to “dandelions” by ruth b. while writing, thus the title (i am so bad at titles). i’m trying to get back into writing again, but life has been very rough so it’s been... a process. also, xiao is in this briefly because i went a bunch of different directions while writing this and he chose to stick around; he’s my emotional support adeptus. aNYWAYS — happy birthday, kaeya! 🦚 ❄️ 🩵
The comforting sound of Sara puttering around behind the counter of Good Hunter filters through the air as you finish eating your meal, and you move to stack up the dishes to carry them to be washed – only for your companion to snatch them up before you can even finish standing.
Pursing your lips and narrowing your eyes at him, he meets your gaze with a blank expression, eyebrow ever so slightly arching upward as if challenging you to take the dishes from him.
Your fake ire towards him cracks and a soft laugh escapes you as you shake your head at him affectionately.
“I’ll meet up with you later, Xiao – thank you again for agreeing to have lunch with me,” you smile and set a hand on his shoulder, squeezing gently in farewell as his eyes soften and he inclines his head towards you as you turn to walk up the stairs through the city and make your way to the Knights of Favonius headquarters.
As soon as you take a step into the foyer, your eyes are immediately drawn to the two people that are standing in front of the door to Jean’s office and a surprised lavender gaze meets yours as a familiar brunette stretches to peer over his shoulder, grinning and waving at you.
“Hey there! Fancy seeing you here!” Amber exclaims, not-so-subtly nudging her companion in the back with her elbow.
Kaeya blinks before coming to his senses and smiling crookedly at you, his eye never leaving your face.
“Hello… what are the two of you doing loitering in front of Jean’s office?” you ask, before realizing how rude that sounds. “Oh, not that I’m not happy to see you both! I just didn’t think I’d be lucky enough to run into either of you today!”
Chuckling, Kaeya smirks at your fumbling as Amber surreptitiously glances between the two of you.
“I was just leaving, actually! We’ve already finished our business with Jean,” Amber said, smiling knowingly.
“Oh, uhm, I–”
“Oops, look at the time – gotta go! Captain, I’ll give you the reports later, yeah?” she winks at Kaeya before immediately turning to rush out the door.
You and Kaeya both stare after her, bewildered.
“Oh… okay…” you trail off, baffled at her abrupt departure.
Kaeya turns to you, taking note of how disconcerted and flustered you look.
“I just needed to give Jean some information I discovered, but I can just leave the paper on her desk… that’ll be fine, right?” you find yourself questioning nervously, unconsciously wringing your hands together due to the butterflies of seeing Kaeya again.
Taking a deep breath to get yourself together, you glance back up at Kaeya just as he frowns and takes a few steps closer to you.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine!” you blurt out in a high-pitched voice, much louder than you’d intended.
His eye widens and he opens his mouth to respond but is interrupted when Xiao suddenly appears at your side, glaring at Kaeya and grasping your upper arm gently to pull you into him.
“Xiao, no, it’s okay!” you gasp, quickly shrugging him off and stepping in front of Kaeya, holding your hands up placatingly.
“You were shouting and your heart was racing… I heard you,” his eyes flick to you before narrowing back onto Kaeya in suspicion. “Who is this?”
“Kaeya’s a friend,” you explain, glancing at Kaeya to see his expression suddenly turn unreadable – easily missed if you hadn’t gotten to know him as well as you had, “a very close friend! I’m just exhausted from the past few days and it was a surprise to see him so my emotions got the best of me,” you specify, grimacing internally. “But it’s fine, he’d never hurt or upset me,” your eyes implore Xiao to understand and leave it be.
He glares at Kaeya for a moment longer – the definition of “if looks could kill” – before focusing back on you and nodding sharply.
“If you’re sure… but remember, if you need anything, just call for me,” he mutters, hesitating for only a moment longer to give Kaeya another suspicious once-over before disappearing just as suddenly as he’d arrived.
Sighing, you turn to Kaeya. “I’m sorry about him, he can be very… overprotective at times.”
“Is that the Adeptus you’ve mentioned in your letters?”
“Yes, that’s the one – he’s been traveling with me and helping me a majority of the time I’ve been in Liyue, and he was nice enough to accompany me here,” you smile to yourself as you think of Xiao. “He’s been a wonderful companion and he’s come to be very dear to my heart.”
“I see… well, honestly, I’m glad that you’ve had someone watching over you,” he confesses after a moment, smiling crookedly when you laugh in response to his words. “What with the amount of trouble you always seem to find yourself in, after all.“
Scoffing at his jab, you gently shove at his shoulder. “I can take care of myself, you know!”
His smile grows wider, he chuckles at your easy banter. “Oh don’t worry, I’m well aware, but it never hurts to know that someone you care about has protection in case something ever goes wrong.”
You freeze, mouth slightly ajar as his words register in your mind.
It isn’t as if it’s a surprise to hear him state such a thing, especially after everything that’s happened between the two of you, but it has been a while since it’s been addressed… and the confirmation after having missed him so much was jarring in the best way… but wait, hadn’t you just referred to him as “a friend” to Xiao?
‘Idiot’, you think to yourself, gritting your teeth at your thoughtless behavior.
He blinks and his smile falters as he realizes that your reaction to his words isn’t exactly as positive as he’d hoped.
Glancing at the various guards stationed around the room who are watching your interaction curiously, you can’t help but to be increasingly aware of Kaeya’s presence beside you.
Noticing your discomfort and the looks from the guards, he gently reaches out and grasps your hand firmly, quickly turning on his heel and leading you up the stairs and into his office so that nobody will be able to observe the two of you.
He lets go of your hand as he locks the door to ensure your privacy and turns to you, tilting his head and smiling.
“There, no more nosy guards – but what brings you all the way back to Mondstadt?”
“Oh, uhm… I actually wanted to come back for your birthday… it’s tomorrow, right?” you ask, flushing with embarrassment. “I’m sorry for not writing about the possibility of me visiting, but I kind of wanted it to be a surprise…”
Kaeya quietly observes you with an inscrutable look for a moment before he slowly steps toward you, coming to a stop just a few inches away.
Inhaling sharply, you look up to find him studying you intently.
“Is there something wrong?” you whisper, eyes widening as he tilts his head and leans just a bit closer.
“Hm, I think I should be the one asking you that question,” he rests his palm against the wall right above your shoulder.
It reminds you of when he’d had you pinned up against the bookshelf in this very office weeks ago, and your face floods with warmth at the memory as your eyes desperately search his face to try and figure out what he’s thinking.
“I’m fine…” you mutter, eyes unfocusing slightly as his proximity and unique scent wash over you, the intense feelings for him you’ve been trying to keep in check rushing to the forefront of your mind.
Kaeya’s lips press together as he closes his eye and breathes in deeply.
“Kaeya? I’m sorry if–”
“Stop it,” he snaps, immediately clicking his tongue and sighing. “Please stop apologizing to me,” he says in a softer tone, his eye opening to look at you imploringly.
“I’m–” you stammer to a halt as he raises an eyebrow at you in a warning. “Okay, I’ll… stop?”
“Thank you,” he breathes. “Now then, I think we should have a chat, don’t you agree?”
Nodding and deciding to stare at his chest to avoid eye contact, you reach beside him to fiddle with the edge of his cape to distract yourself and calm your nerves. “Yes, I’m… I should tell you something.”
“I’m listening,“ he urges softly, watching you intently as you nod.
“I know that I haven’t mentioned anything in my letters and… neither have you, but what happened between us after you got hurt a month ago…” you take a shaky breath to steel your nerves. “I still feel the same, and I know that they say ’absence makes the heart grow fonder,’ and I’ve found that it’s very true in this case; I think about you all the time.”
Focusing on the faint icy blue glow coming from his Vision to continue avoiding his gaze, you falter – startling when you feel Kaeya’s cold hand gently cradle your cheek, his thumb brushing along your cheekbone.
“I’m glad to hear it,” he murmurs, leaning forward to press a lingering kiss to your forehead. “As I’m having the same predicament as you.”
Confused, you look up at him and tilt your head in question.
“Unable to stop thinking of you,” he explains, flashing you a charming smile and what you assume to be a wink.
Exhaling a soft laugh in response, you wrap your arms around his waist and cling to him, pressing your face against his chest and inhaling the familiar sharp mint–like scent that was just… Kaeya.
“Okay, that’s good. I’m glad – I missed you but I didn’t want to pressure you for anything,” your voice is muffled by how your face is smushed against his chest. “But everything that happened before was real – you’re everything to me, Kaeya.”
You feel him tremble against you, his heart beating a bit faster and his breath hitching, and you delight in how you of all people can affect him this way.
“I can assure you that the feeling is mutual, darling,” he admits after a moment, returning your gentle embrace and nuzzling his face into your hair as you both stand in the middle of the room and hold each other for a few moments.
Pulling back slightly, you summon your courage again and boldly press a quick kiss to the exposed skin of his chest – something you’ve been wanting to do to that tantalizing glimpse of flesh for ages.
Huffing in amusement, he suddenly sweeps you up into his arms in a bridal carry, laughing when you squawk loudly in protest before he gently tosses you onto the large couch in the corner of his office.
Scrambling to sit up properly, you can’t help but admire him as he stands in front of you, laughing at the expression on your face. His eye sparkles with mirth and he’s smiling so genuinely that his faint dimples are making a rare appearance.
Enraptured, you scoot to sit on the very edge of the cushion, reaching out to gently cup his cheeks in your hands and brush your fingers over the small indents in his cheeks that showcase his joy, staring at him with wonder and a giddy smile on your face.
Kaeya stops laughing and takes a step forward to press his knees against yours, resting his hands lightly on your shoulders as his smile grows soft.
“You always look at me like that,” he whispers, his gaze flickering over your face just as intently as yours was doing to his.
“Hm?” you hum, tilting your head at him.
“... like I’m the most important person in the world,” he replies, before shaking his head in disbelief and rolling his eye.
“You are… well, I mean, you’re the most important person in my world,” you murmur, guiding his head down to press your foreheads together.
Sighing, his eye closes and he doesn’t respond.
You slowly slide your hands off of his face and scoot back, raising an eyebrow and patting at the space next to you on the couch expectantly.
Kaeya shakes his head again, a soft smile briefly reappearing on his face, and makes a show of taking his outwear off.
Pushing yourself back to lean against the back of the couch, you once again can’t help but stare in utter fascination as he finishes removing his fur–lined cape and coat and begins to take off his gloves.
Glancing up at you, he smirks at your blatant ogling.
“Like what you see?” he cheekily tugs on one of his gloves with his teeth and chuckles at the way you quickly avert your gaze with burning cheeks.
You focus on taking off your own jacket, suddenly feeling hot, and fold it up to set it on the arm of the couch, turning back to find Kaeya sitting beside you and watching you silently.
Amused at how quickly he’s managed to take off those ridiculous layers of his, you reach out to grab his arm and tug him closer to you.
Grunting in surprise, he slides over until you’re pressed against each other.
“That was rather rude of you, don’t you think?” he mumbles, frowning dramatically.
“It got you over here next to me, didn’t it?” your face grows warm as you realize that your faces are now only a few scant inches away from each other.
Kaeya hums in response, closing his eye and resting a hand on your hip to pull you towards him.
You can’t help but move even closer to him at the invitation, resting one hand lightly on his chest and reaching out to gently trace the features of his face with your finger.
Eye fluttering open as you run your finger across his brow, he chuckles and turns his head toward you. “There you go again.”
“I don’t quite understand how it’s my fault that you’re so beautiful, Kaeya,” you state, raising an eyebrow.
He blinks a few times before he lets out a quick humorless laugh.
“I’m not joking, Kaeya – I could stare at you for eternity,” you mumble, leaning closer so that you’re nose–to–nose.
He stares at you for a moment with a furrowed brow before he glances up at the ceiling and frowns.
Sighing through your nose, you find yourself overcome with frustration with him and you abruptly sit up straight to fling a leg over his thighs and straddle him, supporting yourself with your hands on either side of his head on the back of the couch.
Kaeya freezes, eye going wide at your boldness and the intense glare you level at him.
“What do I have to do to get you to listen to me?” you demand.
Shaking his head in confusion, he swallows roughly. “I–”
“You’re a very good actor, Kaeya Alberich, and before we confessed our feelings to each other I thought you had very high confidence,” you admit. “But every time I give you a compliment you brush it off.”
Huffing in irritation, you start pressing soft, retaliatory kisses all over his face.
His breath shudders and you hear a very faint groan when your lips lightly graze along his jawline.
Smirking, you allow more of your weight to press down onto him as one of your hands slides up to tangle itself in his soft blue locks, gently guiding his head to the side so you can access more of him.
“This is unexpected,” he gasps out, hands coming up to rest on your waist as you trail kisses down the warm column of his throat.
“Unwelcome?” your lips hover over his skin as you pause and wait for his answer, not wanting to make him uncomfortable.
“Mm, no, not at all,” he sighs, gently kneading his fingers into the soft flesh of your hips.
Smiling, you nip at his collarbone out of curiosity and you aren’t disappointed: he stifles a soft cry, his body shuddering against yours.
“Sensitive,” you tease, smiling against his shoulder, and he huffs out a strained laugh before you take pity on him and move to press your lips to his.
Sighing into the kiss, he brings a hand up to tangle in the hair at the back of your head.
You pull back after a moment and nuzzle your nose against his, his soft chuckle and grin causing you to smile back at him.
The hand that had been grasping at your hip trails slowly up your spine and your eyes widen as you stiffen, biting your lip to stifle the squeak that the sensation threatens to draw from you.
Kaeya stops, peering at you with slightly narrowed eyes, and a knowing smirk slowly grows on his face as he realizes what caused your odd reaction.
“Kaeya, don’t–!” you warn, quickly trying to push off and away from him, but he grabs you firmly by the waist and hooks his chin over your shoulder.
“Hm, don’t what? You couldn’t possibly be ticklish, now could you?” he mocks playfully, voice gone slightly rough as he slowly slides one hand under your shirt to glide up along the curve of your waist, wiggling his fingers to test your reaction.
Shrieking and trying to wriggle away, you flail a bit uncontrollably and let out a peal of hysterical laughter at the sensation.
As suddenly as he’s begun tickling you, Kaeya stops – likely realizing that you’re quickly becoming overstimulated.
Panting for breath, your body relaxes as you slump into him.
Kaeya carefully smooths your shirt back down before pulling back and cupping your jaw, tilting his head at you.
“I apologize, was that too much?”
Shaking your head and gasping out a laugh, you wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him closer so his face is mere inches in front of your own.
“No, you’re perfect,” you murmur, trailing a finger gently around his eyepatch as you softly gaze up at him. “I’m just more sensitive than most, unfortunately.“
His eyelashes flutter as he reaches up to gently grab the hand that was caressing around his eyepatch, pulling it away to intertwine your fingers with his and brush a soft kiss across each of your knuckles.
You feel the sudden urge to apologize, realizing you may have crossed a boundary by seemingly attempting to touch his covered eye. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to–”
“What did I say about apologizing to me, hm?” Kaeya’s tone is teasing, but his smirk doesn’t reach his eyes.
Biting your lip, your mind replays the way his body suddenly tensed against yours as soon as your fingertip brushed against the fabric covering his eye.
“It doesn’t matter to me, you know,” you breathe, eyes flickering from his eyepatch to his eye that is still intently focusing on you. “I just… needed to feel you.”
You stare at each other for what feels like forever – Kaeya with an unreadable expression on his face and you with what is undoubtedly a concerned frown.
Sighing, he gently lifts you up and off of him to turn away from you and you immediately panic and stand up, thinking that he’s getting up to leave – only to freeze as soon as you see his hands reach behind his head and begin to tug on the tie of his eyepatch.
Lunging forward to stop him, you quickly grab his hands before they can finish. “Kaeya, no, what–”
“Let me do this, please,” he breathes, and the words sound borderline pleading as his hands slide out of your own that have grown slack at his words.
You are unable to do anything but stand there behind him in shock as he tugs off his eyepatch, setting it gently on the coffee table before pulling his hair tie off as well and taking a deep breath.
You avert your eyes as soon as you see him start to turn back to face you, closing and covering them with your hands for good measure.
“I told you, Kaeya, it doesn’t matter to me – I’ve known you for long enough that nothing could change how I feel about–” your frantic rambling halts abruptly at the sensation of him gently prying your hands away from your eyes, intertwining your fingers tightly.
It’s a struggle to keep your eyes shut when you feel him gently guide you to stand between his legs as he remains sitting on the couch, and as you feel his chilled breath on the side of your face you can’t help but squirm a little.
“Do you remember when I told you I’m not originally from Mondstadt?” he asks, his lips brushing the edge of your ear.
Nodding, you squeeze his hands. “I do my best to remember everything you’ve ever told me, Kaeya,” you murmur, anxiously chewing on your lower lip.
You feel the air rush out of him from the surprised chuckle that statement earns you, and gulp when his lips brush against the shell of your ear again.
“Open your eyes, please,” he pleads, his voice having gone rough with emotion.
Eyes fluttering open slowly, you focus your gaze intently on your clasped hands.
Huffing in exasperation, Kaeya’s lips insistently press against yours and you gasp into his mouth.
He takes that chance to deepen it, no longer a chaste meeting of lips but now becoming an all-consuming melding of mouths.
Whimpering as he traces the tip of his tongue against your bottom lip, your eyes flutter open in reflex when he suddenly pulls away.
At first, you don’t register the difference, too busy swooning from the kiss, but after a few seconds your gaze finds the scar on his right eye, a scar that looks to be from some sort of burn.
Your eyebrows furrow as you stare into his eyes – the star-shaped pupils are the same, only instead of the familiar cornflower blue you love so much the newly uncovered eye is bright amber.
“Who did that to you?” you whisper, eyes tracing the burn mark, though you have a bad feeling that you already know the answer to your question.
The corners of his mouth quirk up a little at your question but he shakes his head and untangles your hands to press his lips back to yours.
Understanding his reluctance to discuss the specifics, you allow him to go back to kissing you senselessly, opening your mouth for him again when his tongue glides against the seam of your lips.
Clutching at your hips, he gently guides you to sit back down on his lap and straddle him, your bodies pressing together.
Deciding to be especially bold, you break away from his greedy mouth and slide your hand up his chest and neck to brush his bangs back from his scarred eye, flustering as he stares at you with eyes burning with blatant want.
“Does it hurt?” you ask, voice slightly hoarse.
Raising an eyebrow at you, he shakes his head. “Not anymore,” he whispers.
“Good,” you reply, leaning forward to press featherlight kisses across his eyelids as they flutter shut at your approach, making him chuckle.
“I’m trying to show you how much I missed you,” he groans dramatically, glaring at you in jest when you pull back. “And yet you keep making this about me.”
“I’m trying to show the soon to be birthday boy how much I love him, you ridiculous, stubborn man,” you reply cheekily, not realizing the depth of the words you’ve spoken aloud until you feel him suddenly go still against you.
Slowly sitting up straight and staring resolutely out the window over his shoulder, you miss his stunned face as you both sit there in strained silence.
Biting your lip and becoming overwhelmed by doubt, you move to climb off of him only for him to stop you by suddenly taking your face between his hands as his mismatched eyes meet yours with a desperate, hungry look in them.
“What?” he rasps out, tilting his head in a request for you to repeat what you said.
“I’m not going to repeat something that you heard and should already know if you’ve got any sense, Kaeya, so please just–”
Lips firmly pressing to yours cut you off, Kaeya seemingly trying to devour you with how desperate his kisses have gotten.
Meeting his sudden fervor with your own, you both gasp as you press against each other as much as possible.
Unfortunately, you eventually need to tear yourself away to breathe and your eyes flutter open and glance down to realize that you’ve been unthinkingly clutching and pulling at his shirt so much that it’s gaping open to show even more of his rich brown skin.
Unable to look away, your hands move thoughtlessly to grip his defined shoulders, thumbs brushing along the edge of the leather choker he wears.
Kaeya isn’t faring much better, one hand cradling the back of your head and the other has somehow managed to slide under your shirt, his cold fingers clutching at the warm, soft skin of your waist.
You lean back just enough to glimpse exactly how much of his skin you’ve ended up revealing and your mouth goes dry and falls open as your breath hitches.
His own eyes open and he immediately takes notice that you’re looking at him hungrily and he smirks, laughing at how you visibly fluster.
A cold hand sliding further up your shirt to glide up your spine makes you shiver, leaning into him and whining.
“You can take it off if you’d like, I don’t mind,” he murmurs as he presses needy kisses along your jawline.
“Huh?” you make a noise of confusion, totally consumed by taking in the most of him you’ve ever seen bared to you.
“My shirt, darling,” he laughs lowly against your ear, a sound that makes you tremble against him once more.
“Oh… but what if someone needs you, we are in your office right now after all…” you murmur, eyes riveted onto the skin that’s been revealed to your eyes.
Kaeya breathes out an amused laugh, shaking his head.
“I’m not even supposed to be here today, actually. Jean gave me the day off, and I locked the door behind us, so…” he trails off, smirking against the shell of your ear.
Exhaling, your hands go to toy with the buttons of his shirt, slowly undoing them.
Biting your lip, you gently push the shirt off his shoulders and then pull the shirt down and off his arms, tossing it beside you on the couch and pausing as you turn back and are greeted by Kaeya’s gorgeous dark brown skin.
There are various scars and freckles here and there and you want to touch, trace, and kiss them all, but for now you slowly caress his chest before you grasp at his shoulders.
Groaning lowly, his eyes flutter as he presses back into your hands.
Feeling bold after everything you’ve already done, you move forward and press lingering kisses to his chest, directly over his heart.
He is practically shaking against you now, either with emotion or from fighting his arousal or perhaps both, you aren’t sure, and you’re far too nervous to ask.
His hands slip back under your shirt, slowly pulling it up so that more of your plush hips and soft stomach are visible to him.
Gasping and tearing yourself away from him after he starts to leave bruising kisses down your throat and onto your collarbone, you can’t help but be hit with a sudden wave of anxiety.
Kaeya immediately goes still when he feels your body tense up against him, pulling back slowly to gauge your expression and meeting your wide, unsure eyes with his concerned ones.
“I’m so sorry, I’m just–”
“Once again, what did I tell you about apologizing to me?” he murmurs, moving to lightly press his forehead to your own.
“I know, but I–”
“Mmm, no, no buts. If you want to stop, we stop,” he interrupts you again, voice stern but still raspy from the intensity of what you’ve just been doing.
Biting your lip and willing the tears that are welling up in your eyes to disappear, you look off to the side and nod.
Sighing, he gently lifts your chin back up so he can look into your eyes which are now uncontrollably watering, hot tears silently running down your face.
“What’s wrong, darling?” he whispers, eyes growing soft and hands moving to cup your cheeks to brush the tears away.
“I’m just… nervous, this is all new to me and I’ve honestly never felt this strongly for anyone until you,” you manage to croak, sniffling and eyes flitting about to look everywhere but at him. “I want to give you anything and everything you want, especially considering tomorrow is your birthday, but at the same time I’m… scared.”
Kaeya inhales sharply, hands framing your face fully as he guides you to meet his eyes again.
“I need you to know that, in regards to you, what I want is for you to be happy and to feel safe,” he declares, voice firm but eyes softening at your teary face peering at him.
“Okay,” you accept weakly, still sniffling with a few tears continuing to fall as you look at him with insecurity dimming your eyes. “I’m s–”
“If you try to apologize to me again, I’ll be forced to resort to drastic measures,” he assures, voice low and chilled fingers feeling downright heavenly when they hesitantly brush the remaining tears off of your overheated cheeks. “For now I think that you’re exhausted and in need of some rest, yeah?”
Blinking slowly at him, you can feel the odd numbness that usually follows such sudden bouts of emotion begin to set in.
“Okay,” you reply, voice hoarse before you clear your throat and try to bring the mood back up. “Drastic measures, huh?”
“Mhm, it’ll be a surprise,” he chuckles, hands returning to holding your waist. “Now, more importantly, would you like me to put my shirt back on?”
You stare at him in confusion before you realize that he’s been half-dressed throughout this entire mini-meltdown of yours and your face floods with heat.
Kaeya snatches your hands in his and laughs as you try to cover your face and turn away out of embarrassment.
“Now now, darling – it was a serious question. If I keep it off will you be able to keep your hands off of me?” he teases, waggling his eyebrows.
Groaning, you roll your eyes. “Oh gosh, Sir Kaeya, I don’t know if I’ll be able to resist your glorious body,” you simper, eyelashes fluttering at him as your easy banter helps you get yourself together.
Smirking, he pulls you close and presses your hands to his chest, reminding you of a fact you don’t know how you forgot – that you were straddling this man and sitting on his lap.
Gasping out an embarrassed laugh, you squirm a bit until he gently squeezes your wrists in a warning.
“I need you to know that I am more than happy to take things slow, but if you keep wiggling around like that…” he trails off, grinning sheepishly at you and glancing down at where your hips meet.
“Oh my–” you gasp, quickly yet carefully moving off of him, sitting beside him on the couch and folding your legs under yourself and wondering if tonight can manage to get any more mortifying…
“Now, I’ll ask again. Shirt, yes or no?” he questions, holding up the shirt in question.
“Um, I wouldn’t mind if you… left it off?” you finally squeak out, sure that at this point your face was as hot as the sun.
“As you wish,” he chuckles, amused at how flustered you are. “Now, a follow-up question – may I kiss you?”
It takes you a moment for your brain to process what he’s said, and once you do you stare at him incredulously.
“Kaeya, you had your tongue down my throat not even 10 minutes ago,” you say flatly.
He gasps at that, frowning at you. “How vulgar! One must always ask for consent, darling, even if it was previously given.”
“I appreciate it, but I’ll be honest with the fact that I will almost always want you to kiss me,” you can’t help but laugh at him, wrapping your arms around his neck to pull him close and enjoying feeling his bare skin brush against your palms.
“Hm, almost is not a guarantee,” he shakes his head, leaning back slightly to keep from getting too close to you.
“Kae, please. It’s almost as if you don’t want to kiss me,” you pout, fluttering your lashes and inwardly preening at how his eyes instantly drop down to your lips.
His throat bobs as he swallows roughly and his pupils dilate slightly when you subconsciously lick your lips.
“I can assure you that I want nothing more than to be kissing you at every waking moment,” he whispers, flashing you a coy look when your eyes widen in reaction to his words. “Mm, and I’m Kae now, am I?”
“Is… is that okay?” you mumble as a flash of insecurity goes through you, unsure if you’ve overstepped yet again.
Bringing his hand up to skim his knuckles against the soft skin of your cheek, he rolls his eyes playfully before answering your question by kissing you delicately.
Sighing into the kiss, you tighten your arms around his neck to hold him against you – you regret getting off of his lap, but it was unfortunately the safest option right now.
He slowly pulls away, chuckling when you subconsciously chase after his lips.
“I don’t want to overwhelm you, or make you uncomfortable,” he murmurs, cradling your face in his hands when your eyes flutter open and meet his soft, loving gaze.
“I appreciate it, Kaeya,” you whisper, combing your fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck and pressing your forehead to his.
Humming in reply, he seems content to just sit here holding your face and staring into your eyes.
“I’m assuming that Jean is forcing you to take a few days off for your birthday?" you ask quietly, not wanting to ruin the moment but unable to ignore your curiosity.
“She is,” he whispers, sighing. “I suppose it’s silly of me to hope that she’d conveniently forget about it.”
“Can I be honest?"
“Always,” he murmurs, tilting his head a bit in question and nudging his nose against yours, smiling when you let out a quiet giggle.
“I, uh, may have been putting off coming back… partially because of the fact that I have to go back to Sumeru, but also because of… us,” you explain, biting your lip and averting your eyes.
“Us?” he whispers after a moment, hands sliding down from your cheeks to cradle your jaw, thumb gently brushing under your bottom lip that was being abused by your teeth.
Pulling back slightly, immediately missing the closeness, you still refused to meet his eyes.
“I was almost going to go to Sumeru before coming back, but I knew that wouldn’t have been fair to you, especially since it’s your birthday tomorrow, and I needed to know where we stood before…” you trail off, cheeks burning in embarrassment.
"Before…?”
You gulp, suddenly realizing how ridiculous the idea had been.
Kaeya whispers your name softly and you can’t help but bring your eyes back to him to see him observing you with furrowed brows.
“I was going to see if you would come with me,” you blurt out, eyes widening at how nonexistent your filter has become around him.
He blinks slowly a few times before his heterochromatic eyes focus intently on you.
“I’d have to clear it with Jean, but I don’t see why she’d disagree – she’s been trying to get me out of the city for a break anyways,” he grins at the relieved smile that grows on your face at his words.
“Wait, a break? Doesn’t she usually need you to do the opposite?” you question, confused.
His grin turns sheepish then, eyes looking away.
“I may have been throwing myself into my work lately and overdoing it,” he admits.
"Oh? Did something happen?” you were suddenly concerned. Kaeya wasn’t a slacker by any means, but he often liked to take his time and Jean usually had a lot of work for him to do.
“No, nothing like that, I just needed a distraction because I couldn’t stop thinking about a certain someone.”
Realization hits you and you immediately feel like an idiot, laughing at yourself and leaning your head against his shoulder.
“Oh, that’s… flattering, I guess?” your words are muffled by his skin but you know he heard you nonetheless.
Pressing a brief kiss to the top of your head, he wraps his arms around you.
“Good, it was meant to be. I’m rather fond of you, after all.”
You feel your face flush with heat even more at that, breathing out a soft, flustered laugh.
“I’m rather fond of you too, Sir Kaeya,” you whisper, pressing a kiss to his collarbone.
His breath hitches before he hums happily, closing his eyes as he leans against you.
The two of you fall silent as you just enjoy being in the presence of each other for the first time in a while.
After a few moments of breathing each other in, you break the silence with a soft whisper.
“Happy early birthday, Kaeya.”
His arms tighten their embrace around you, and you can feel him turn his head to press a lingering kiss to your forehead before he murmurs his reply.
“Thank you, sweetheart.”

Part 2
Steve backed into his case of a bed as he was met with two toads.
"Where am I? Who are you?"
"I'm Carol and this is Tommy", one toad gestured to herself and then the other. "We've decided to graciously welcome you into our home~"
"After we saw that fairy pestering you all night, that is", Tommy croaked.
"Eddie?", Steve's face scrunched a little at the insinuation. "He wasn't pestering me or anything like that." Last night had been the most wonderful night of his life and now his morning was sour.
"In fact, I need to get home." He crawled out of his bed, fully awake now, realizing he had been kidnapped in the dead of night. "I'm supposed to be seeing him again today."
"Again?!" Both toads exclaimed.
"Now that would be a bad idea", Tommy said, shoving Steve back into the case as Carol sat next to him.
"If you hang out with that prince, he'll actually get the idea you like him or something."
Steve blushed. It was a lot more than just like at this point. Apparently they could tell just by looking at him because they just laughed.
"Listen, you obviously don't know, but those fairies are freaks", Tommy sat on Steve's other side, boxing him in between them. "They're always flying around, like little flies."
"Delicious, but annoying", Carol added. "And so high and mighty."
"Ooh~ Look at me, I change the seasons."
"If you run in with their crowd, you're gonna be too busy for any fun."
"Busy?", Steve questioned.
"With all their busy-body fairy stuff. Getting involved in everyone's business", Tommy scorned.
"And keeping to themselves too much. They hardly go anywhere."
Steve didn't know how you could be a busy-body AND not go anywhere at the same time.
"Well, Eddie said he could show me the world. And I want to see it."
"Tommy and I have already done that! We could show you all the good spots~"
"And you won't be tied down to some prince."
"The bakeries of France, the monuments of Greece-"
"The shows in Spain, the art in Germany-"
"We'll take you there, free of charge."
The constant back and forth had him swiveling his head and losing his way and the more they talked, the more it sounded like a good idea to go. After all, seeing the world was what he wanted, wasn't it?
"The decision's made then", Carol decided without a word from Steve. She grabbed his hands and pulled him to his feet. "And to seal the deal, let's have a little party."
"A party?"
Tommy grabbed Steve by the waist and before he could protest, was set down on a lily pad.
"Of course a party", he said. "Gotta celebrate your nuptials."
"My WHAT?!"
"We're gonna get some other toads. Then we can really get crazy", Carol grinned. "While we're gone, you can decide which of us you're gonna marry. Fun fact, Tommy burps when he croaks."
"And Carol's tongue lashes out in her sleep."
"Hey wait a minute!"
"See ya soon~!", the two toads crooned as their boat skuttled down the stream, in search of the rest of their friends.
Steve looked at his surroundings. On a lily pad, no dry land in sight. He sighed, ran a hand through his hair and then jumped in. Better start swimming. Hopefully Eddie wouldn't mind that he was late and also soaking wet. He wasn't quite sure of his direction, but all water had to lead somewhere and eventually get to land. As he swam, a bird flew overhead and noticed him.
"Uh, hey, quick question, what're you doing?", the bird asked, flying low.
"Swimming", Steve answered shortly, not having much room to talk.
"I can see that, but why?"
"To get home."
"Mhm. And you thought this was a good idea because?"
"What's it to you?!" Steve finally paused and floated in place while the bird landed on a cattail.
"Just seems like there's better options than swimming back. Like some sort of vessel."
"Yeah, well, my kidnappers took the boat, so this is my only choice."
"I mean you also could've just waited for someone to come by and help you."
"Who are you anyway and where were you when I got stolen?"
"Name's Dustin and if your kidnappers operate like most, it was probably night. So I was asleep."
"Well Dustin, I'd love to talk but I've got a date to keep. So bye." Steve started to swim again only to hear the bird call out once more.
"So were you planning on getting out before or after the waterfall?"
Steve didn't have time to ask before the current suddenly got faster, pulling him without even trying. He let out a shout before it took him under. He tried grabbing onto a stalk, a rock, anything to root him but his hands were too slippery and he was too disoriented. Dustin rushed after him and tried to pull Steve out himself but he wasn't strong enough. It wasn't until the other animals got involved, herding Steve away from the precipice that they were able to save him and get him out of the water.
Steve choked up what he swallowed and let out a shuddering breath. He looked around and tried to gather himself.
"Thanks. I owe you guys one. I'm...I'm Steve, by the way."
"So what're you gonna do now?", Dustin asked.
"I'm trying to go home, but..." Steve looked up at the grasses that surrounded him, much taller and keeping him from seeing any path that led back to his mother, back to Eddie. "It's looking kind of hopeless at this point."
He didn't even know which direction the toads had taken him. And then that stunt in the stream had him even less sure of where he was.
"So you're just gonna sit here and mope then?", Dustin asked.
Steve glared. "It's not that simple. I have no idea where I am or where to go!"
"Sitting here isn't gonna change anything. The way I see it, you got four choices."
"Four?"
"Yeah, go east, west, north, or south." Steve rolled his eyes as the bird continued. "Eventually, you'll either find home, or find someone who knows the way. Maybe you'll even run into that prince guy."
"How do you kno-"
"I think half the forest saw you two last night. Really gross by the way, you should get a room."
"I had one." But Dustin was right. He had to get moving somehow. Maybe Eddie had already gone to his house and saw that he wasn't there. Maybe he was already looking for him. Steve got to his feet, he took off his shirt and wrung it out as best as he could but made do with the fact he'd be wet for a little while.
His determination renewed, he started on his journey home, again.
----------------------------------
Eddie had gone through a plethora of emotions in the past few hours. Anticipation and elation when he returned to Steve's abode. Confusion when he found his mother crying. Heartbreak and anger when she said he had been kidnapped. Anxiety as he tried to figure out how to find him. Knowing it was toads didn't exactly narrow it down.
In his frenzy, he did remember to stop by home to speak with his uncle. If looking for Steve was going to take a while, he had to be sure he actually had the time.
"First you shirk off your duties last night to go gallavatin' and then you come in here tellin' me you found the boy of your dreams and now he's just disappeared into thin air?"
"Kidnapped. Kidnapped is what I said. And I need to find him."
"Doesn't seem like the helpless type", Wayne said, stroking his chin. "You're the one who said he parried you with a needle."
"Yeah", Eddie swooned a little. "But he's probably unarmed and he can't fly. Even if he gets free, it could take him ages to find his way home."
"So what do you want me to do about it?"
"Hold off on the chill. Just until I find him."
"Hold off? Summer's nearly done, son." Wayne knew he was in love but messing with the seasons was a tall order for just one person.
"Please. If things freeze over I'll never find him. He could die!" Spurred on by the urgency, Eddie hopped onto Honey and left before he could get a response. He'd find his Steve. Or he'd die trying.
