I think one thing that makes the m/f pairings I like a lot in Cdramas appealing is that yes the men are all wife guys, male wives, whatever, but they’re also highly competent themselves. They’re not schlubs like you often find, among say American sitcom husbands. They bring as much to the table as the woman does. It’s not ‘the goddess and the guy that everyone looks at and goes lmao how did he bag her he’s useless.’ This isn’t inherently a bad trope, but it can end up quite tired and it does often tie into misogyny, weaponized incompetence, etc.

Even in a series like Love Between Fairy and Devil where the male lead starts out the story unable to emote, he makes an active effort to understand her throughout the entire series. At times he is frustrated (not because he isn’t trying but because it is quite literally something it isn’t possible for him to understand yet), but he is always doing this. He acknowledges the behavior that may have turned her off (without someone else pointing it out! He figures it out himself!!) and tries to figure out how to approach things differently. He is not ashamed to ask for help regarding this when he needs it. He is proud, but able to acknowledge his shortcomings and do something about them. He works HARD. Of course, when it comes to non-relationship matters, he is hyper competent.

In Destined, the male lead does start out a bit useless, but although the female lead tries to get him to change at first, it’s his own desire to be a better person that actually gets the ball rolling. It’s seeing the person she is and being inspired by that. He never stops trying to better himself, but he’s also totally happy to let his wife outshine him. And it’s not because he’s lazy or doesn’t care about accomplishing anything like you may see in the trope mentioned in the first paragraph. Quite the opposite; he refuses to be a person who is any less than worthy of being her partner. It’s because he acknowledges his wife’s skill, is proud of her, and just legitimately thinks she deserves that level of success, that he is happy to see that rewarded.

Not to beat a dead horse but nothing will compare to watching Yuri on ice while it was airing, you had to be there to understand the sheer joy and excitement and anticipation. Every time we thought they couldn’t do more they did More. It really and truly is so special and important to both it’s creators and fans and it’s treatment is a travesty

my heart goes out to the yuri on ice fandom tonight. this show brought me great joy and many tears a long time ago and I was always hopeful there would be more someday. though it never really felt over because I could always see what you all made for them. yuuri and viktor are very much alive and in love in your art. please keep them alive always.
