Subtext only seems gayer than actual text because it’s blatant. It’s put there purposefully. But what you have to figure out is what it’s put there purposefully for.

There’s a huge motherfucking difference between subtext used for queerbaiting and manipulation over an actual legitimate subtext. Xena does not fall into the category of subtext for wrong or selfish reasons.

It was severely censored. They COULD NOT do it.

But if you watch the show - you’ll quickly realize that it doesn’t even fucking matter that they’re not canon.

The creators agree with you anyway that they are.

The reason why it’s still the gayest TV show ever is because the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is the most realistic depiction of love and therefore the best lesbian or WLW representation that there is. Part of the reason why is because they are the main protagonists. They’re the MAIN characters of the show. That may exist but it’s extremely fucking rare. The other part is that the creators see them that way. You get a legitimate lesbian love story because IT IS.

So it doesn’t matter that they’re not textually canon. In fact you could ever say it’s better that they’re not.

Because in a weird, ironic and hilarious way - the fact the show is censored helps a hell of a lot because the creators used the censorship to their advantage. They were clever and creative in getting around the censorship. They built on the relationship through it. And so it’s because it’s censored why it feels so real.

You don’t get canon text like “I’m in love with you”, “marry me” or “I want to have sex with you.”

You get: “It was like I was in a dream too. I forgot everything. But even though I didn't remember you..., I felt your presence. And knew that I would never be complete unless those shadows were brought into the light.” and “Gabrielle, if I'd only have thirty seconds to live, that's how I'd want to live them, looking into your eyes.”

Which is 1000x gayer than anything you’ll get today textually, subtextually or basically any romantic dialogue in a TV show said to another character ever.

Xena is just THAT GAY. It’s extremely gay. It’s a fucking queer show about queer characters. And it is that way because the creators made it that way. They purposefully made it that way. For the right reasons!

So don’t compare it to shit like ‘Supergirl’. The creators/cast/crew ridiculed you. They didn’t represent you. They baited you in and laughed at you. Xena do the opposite. They validate and love you.

the thing about romcoms is just- it's never meant to be 'is it believable?' but instead 'do you believe it?' do you believe these two characters are actually falling in love with each other??? do you believe their chemistry??? do you believe whatever obstacle is thrown in their way is legitimately something that might keep them apart for a time and not something that could be solved with one conversation?? do you believe that they believe they need to fake date for this very specific reason??? do you believe the reason why they're 'enemies' at the start, no matter how silly a misunderstanding it may be??? do you believe the grand romantic gesture fits the characters and is actually how one character would show their love to the other?? like!!!! it's about empathy and authenticity and feeling what the characters feel so strongly that even if it's a trope or a cliché it doesn't matter because you believe it

Sigmund and Barbara Authen... Authen like Authentic?

So, people are wondering if Sigmund and Barbara are real or not, what their history may be. I'm undecided, but am leaning more towards them being a perfectly normal couple.

We only know of one big war in the series and that happened when Twilight and Yor were teens and ended before Anya was born/created? So war ends about ten years ago. If the Authens are in there 60s or 70s then they likely would be out of field work by the time the conflict started.

In any case, i do agree that their role in the story will be to act as parents/a reflection for Twilight and Yor, and grandparents for Anya.

I'm interested in who will be the mirror for who though. We haven't gotten much of Barbara herself, but if we go off Sigmund then she's something of a mischief maker or at least unorthodox in how she goes about home making; a pretty good alternative/aged up Yor. This makes the scatter brained, detail confused, over sharing man who just wants his wife Sigmund a look into Loid (a Twilight who's trying to figure himself out without any assigned traits?).

Or we might have the hapless but more than able Sigmund who's always stumbling into and misinterpreting dangerous situations as Yor; making the sensible and stable Barbara the Loid.

Either way they'll love Anya and the next few chapters will likely be getting to know them. Can't wait.

Cut to now and that Twitter thread Justine Bateman posted about how actors images are being signed away in contracts if they’re not careful and how peoples voices are being artificially generated and they really just wanna make everything fake and phony so the big heads don’t have to pay people like we are in hell world!!!

you'd think as someone who's knowingly been a lesbian for over 10 years i would've watched more than like, 4 lesbian movies by now, since there were more than a handful to choose from by that point and waaaaaaaaaaay more now.

and part of me thinks i should make it a new years resolution to watch more sapphic movies to experience the culture tm and feel those feelings.
