UPDATE 04.01.24 / event #3
In the days following Guinevere’s ball where the legitimacy of the Staffords is questions, there is a riot in the capitol city. The Astairans did not take kindly to these accusations and try to storm the castle. But Roderick’s men were prepared and it was over as quickly as it started — but not before the lives of fifteen men, two women, and a child were lost and dozens arrested.
The resistance, hearing of this, attempt to make plans for some kind of rescue attempt before the men who were arrested are surely killed.

kale was once a servant at malconaire but lost his position there soon after lord malconaire died
he refused to live off of charity from his friends, but there was not much work to be had (at least by those who could pay him) and he refused to leave the malconaire village
so, instead, he supported himself by stealing from unsuspecting varmont soldiers and one day was too cocky about it and got arrested
he was the first person ronan went to when he decided to form a resistance (once ronan broke him out of jail)
honestly very proud of his status as "the first resistance member" as he was the first person ronan recruited
kale likes to think that this makes him ronan's "second in command" and ignores ronan when ronan tells everyone that that is a position which belongs to padraic lorcan (even kale is not brave enough to bring up to ronan that padraic has been missing for two years ... )
kale has a great sense of humor and tbh he is always laughing and joking!!!
in fact, isolda has banned him from sitting next to cillian whenever the resistance meets because they simply egg each other on
he's been friends with ronan since they were boys and he's one of the few people who is unaffected when ronan brings the mood down with one of his angry rants -- kale's always here to lighten things up again!
arrogant, conceited, proud, selfless, energetic, kind, considerate, reckless, loyal, idealistic, romantic
kale has always been a flirt, but he views himself as a helpless romantic who is eventually destined to find the love of his life (and when he does, he will not need to look at another woman again!)
in the meantime, he's enjoying some friendly flirtations with both eabha -- which he once thought was harmless, but now he's realizing that it might be something more???
she's certainly much higher in rank than he is (not to mention, he's an outlaw!) and she will likely soon marry someone else
not to mention, he doubts she cares for him in this way
kale is dealing with this problem in the only way he knows how: ignoring it!

ngl he is secretly dealing with ptsd from it all but doesn't talk about it because #man
refused to live in a world where roderick varmont was his king and soon after roderick was crowned, ronan was arrested for attacking varmont soldiers who entered malconaire
ronan escaped, but now lives in hiding as a wanted man
with a mark already on his head, ronan decided to do whatever he could to continue to rebel against roderick's rule
with the help of his brother and the friends he had left, ronan began to assemble a small band of men who would help him resist roderick's rule (this eventually grew to include his younger sister, a fact that ronan is still not especially fond of and he only ever gives her the absolute safest tasks he can, because he will NOT endanger her!)
ronan is intelligent and calculating, but he can also be ruthless in his pursuit -- the ends will always justify the means!!!
he is not afraid to get his hands dirty and he will do what needs to be done! the resistance is a democracy for the most part, but ronan is not above going rogue to achieve his ends, even if he does not have the support of everyone else
he has a lot of build up anger that can come out when provoked!! he is angry that so many bad things have happened to his home and the people in it and sometimes he feels like he's helpless to do anything about it
used to take everything v seriously (sense of humor? never heard of it!), but has softened a some since ciara's come into his life??
she made him laugh once and everyone thought he was broken at first
what he has not told her is that he means to kill literally everyone in her family because keeping even 1 varmont alive is dangerous!!! (he does mean to spare her father and her brother, but roderick and his entire brood must die!)
ronan is v loyal and v protective and it's one thing to cross him, but if you hurt someone he loves? that's when you've crossed the line!

while it is said that the original arms that calainon took depicted his famed tower, the eternal flame, and the kolchian dragon, godfrey took quite another famed symbol of calainon for his sigil as the renewed arms of calainon: his destruction, taking the eclipse and the lightning that seared down from it to cast down calainon in his hubris as his crest. you can read more about our friend, calainon, and his unfortunate descendants [ here ]
so yeah this can easily be taken as just 'oh yeah that's his ancestor's conquest and thus this is just a mark of his humility before greater powers despite his descent' etc etc, and that is 100% how roderick takes it -- what his shield is saying on a heraldic level is: the gods have abandoned us: the wise know its time for horrific destruction and terrifying rebirth if we wish to ever again know peace
originally i was going to depict the ancient arms of calainon here, too, but my computer crashed and i didn't save it so atp that'll be for another day...maybe amira's since she took her own badge that's much more similar to the og when she became queen

UPDATE 03.10.24
Hey everyone!
Just a quick update: I hope to get the last couple of characters from tier 3 posted this evening, but if not they will be the first thing to come after my hiatus! (Speaking of, I don't think I'll be on much this week, at all. The next couple of days before I go away will be pretty busy tbh)
I also wanted to give a quick overview of what is going on with the Lorcans! They will come in the next tier in a few months, but since Saoirse works for them/they are Malconaire cousins, I think it would be helpful to know about their situation!
Lorcan's estate is basically a fortress that is built into the side of a mountain
And, in true Lorcan fashion, it was designed with the potential to not only protect the family instead, but had enough room that it could provide shelter to the entire village below in the event of a war or natural disaster
There is also a secret labyrinth of tunnels beneath that can be both used as a shelter and as a means of escape -- the tunnel will eventually lead out through a cave that borders the Malconaire lands (so, in theory, the Malconaires could secretly visit their cousins w/o being spotted ... however this journey does take several hours, one way, on foot)
During the way, not a single Astairan life was lost upon Lorcan lands. When Roderick sent an army to set siege upon them, the villagers took shelter inside and had more than enough supplies that they outlasted the army
Lord Lorcan, however, was not present during the siege -- having left days beforehand to offer his help to his in the Battle of Malconaire
He never returned (nor was his body ever found)
Lord Lorcan was married to Aine Calleary and with he had two children. His eldest, a son, is only nine years old
While he is Lord Lorcan now, in name (his father presumed dead), he is too young to govern and Roderick knew that a steward must be appointed to him
Lord Lorcan also left behind two (or three??? I haven't decided yet #whoops) sisters
Given that his wife and his sisters are unfit for this position under Roderick's rule, given that they are females, Roderick's next choice was Aine Calleary's brothers and therefore uncle's to the new Lord Lorcan, but as their own father was executed for being a traitor, Roderick did not wish to bestow such a valuable holding to either of them, either
So he has appointed his own steward, who the Lorcan's must live under
The Calleary's are also relatives of Eoin's/Ciara's (their mother being the the late Lord Calleary's younger sister)
The Calleary's ancestral seat of Hanthom was taken from them after their father's refusal to bend his knee to Roderick and was gifted to Godfrey upon his engagement to Ciara
Cormac Calleary, the eldest son of Lord Calleary, has been gifted another estate of slighter smaller size and prestige, but one that had also been so badly destroyed during the war that it is currently uninhabitable and he, his brother, and two sisters are currently living with Lady Lorcan, her children, and her sisters-in-law at Lorcan under the watch of Roderick's steward

if saoirse's brothers had any say in the matter, saoirse would have never even found out about the resistance -- let alone be a part of it
but saoirse could tell that her brothers were both up to something and she wasn't about to let them do anything this stupid unless she was a part of it, too
they are, at least, grateful that saoirse's job keeps her busy enough
saoirse has been working for lady lorcan, mainly as a nursemaid to her two young children
saoirse adores them as though they were her own
loves storytelling and often entertains them with fairytales and stories of her own making to help distract them from the fact that their father is v likely dead since no one has heard from lord lorcan since the war
ends up re-telling a lot of the same stories to the resistance by night to keep spirits up!
saoirse may be the youngest frost, but sometimes she's the most mature!
certainly spoiled by both of her brothers, but they can both be wild and impulsive and have quite the knack for getting themselves into trouble
ronan is a wanted man and saoirse is sure that cillian will join him on that list one day
knows they can both be idiots but loves them more than anything in the world!
didn't initially trust ciara varmont, but has warmed up to her
ronan seems more like himself when she's around and honestly it has made her blind to any suspicions she might otherwise have
saoirse can't see the guardians but sometimes she swears can feel their presence!!!
isn't sure if this is just her imagination or not, she's never even heard them, but she is always the one to make sure that they are still left offerings both at her own home and the resistance hideout

deadly with a knife and a known strategist, isolde brings more to the resistance than just a pretty face
isolda immigrated to astaira with her father when she was sixteen years old --- fleeing their own country ahead of an invasion by roderick varmont
isolda grew up fairly wealthy
her grandfather and father had been both merchants by trade
but most everything they had left to bring with them when they left was gone after their paid for their passage a new (modest) dwelling which happened to be in the village of Malconaire
isolda's father soon passed away, which meant that isolda would now have to either find herself a husband ... or find herself an occupation
isolda took a job at the local tavern and has been working there ever since
it's where she met and befriended the frosts and kale brennan
(speaking of kale, isolda developed romantic feelings for him which she has found to be incredibly frustrating and so she has decided to completely ignore them ... forever, if she can manage it)
after roderick lay siege to astaira, isolda was eager to do anything she could to oppose his rule -- he'd already taken one home away from him, she wasn't about to step aside while he took another
her first act of rebellion was harboring ronan frost in her cellars while his wanted posters hung on the door of the tavern where she worked and her second would be to follow ronan when he decided that they ought to do whatever they could to fight back
isolda plays the part of having accepted the varmonts whenever in public in order to gain the trust of whatever enemies she can -- you never know when they may be useful
isolda does not trust ciara varmont, nor does she believe her motives for joining them -- she believes she's managed to charm ronan, but isolda's not so easily fooled
she's enlisted the help of finn calleary to spy on her while at court to see if he finds any inconsistencies in the stories she's been telling them ...
isolda is outspoken, intelligent, witty, clever, pessimistic, judgemental, resourceful, antisocial, and proud

note: there may be more. the queens would have their own badges, as well, as would the late empress (tho likely that's now what guin is using, i'd think?), and cassandra likely has use of her mom's and/or arthur's with cadency marks, but since she's an imperial princess, and not just a royal princess, roderick would def ok her usage of her own badge, as well, though that's usually reserved for sons, heirs, and titled warriors, it is likely that guin, cassandra, and each of the queens, as well as the late empress, has at least one unit who fights in their honor given that roderick's empire is v much a military operation, so yeah! basically there may be as many as four other varmont insignias out there, but these are the big five! also pls note that i am convinced roderick has given each of his children an obscene number of titltes to bandy abt (tho not so many as he has!) in order to showcase their importance as his children, but we'll say these are perhaps shortened, more casual titles for astaira ;D

A brief history of the House of Ormond
the last two members of the house of ormond, an ancient and honored house of astaira, perished upon the fields of malconaire
these two were uncle and nephew who, themselves, had a rather tumultuous relationship. the nephew -- who also happened to have been named cillian -- was the son of the late lord eoghan ormond who had died -- apparently choking to death at a feast -- when he was a child of all but five, making eoghan's younger brother, ruairi, the de facto lord until such time as cillian came of age
rumor spread that eoghan's death had not been honest but had, in fact, been a poisoning perpetrated by the ambitious and fearsome eoghan, but how true any of this is cannot with any certainty be said, yet the rumors have persisted and some -- perhaps influenced by a popular astairan legend, or else by the horrid truth -- continued to claim that, even as ruairi brought up his nephew, he continued to plot his downfall
whatever the case, both men are said to have lost their lives at the battle of malconaire -- though a rumor persists that cillian ormond did, in fact, survive the battle, and there are those who even claim to have seen him at such high-profile events as the recent ball in celebration of princess guinevere's feast day, while others claim he was not there at all
indeed, in the last two years, many rather wild tales have surfaced all of which seem to center around the mysterious cillian ormond and his rather tumultuous life, but as many of these actually contradict, it is difficult to parse fact from fiction -- or if he is, indeed, even alive at all
whatever the case of this may be, the ormonds claim a long and storied history
like many ancient clans, house ormond can trace its roots back to multiple noble families which have since evanesced in all but the form of the ormonds whose last vestige are, themselves, in fact a cadet house of the original ormond family, tracing their line back to a second son of the original ormond branch, all of which accounts for the present house's many charges
it is said that, in ancient times, the original ormond was a young hunter living in a part of astaira the gods had, in their wrath, blighted with endless snow. crops would not grow, and the animals they might have hunted, perished. caught in the depths of winter without anything to eat, the people of his village were dying. around midnight one evening, it is told, ormond -- for this was his name -- was awakened by a blazing light. when he looked up, he found that the sun, itself, hung within the antlers of a white hart, beckoned him forward. all night, ormond followed the white hart, but as dawn came on, the creature darted forward away from him, taking the sun with it. as ormond raced forward, he watched the white hart die and the sun rise back into the sky. hungry as he was, ormond could not bear to desecrate the magnificent beast and, instead, buried it with dignity and respect. yet, when he dried his eyes, ormond looked around himself and realized that he had come to a place all of lush green. returning to his village, he led the starving people to the green place and, thus, they survived, and ormond was hailed as their leader, taking the creature who had led him for his badge.
many centuries later, kieran ormond, his father's second son, wed tiarna firceall (herself also a second child, her family having all tragically died of the pox the summer previous), the last firceall, whose badge was the too-clever fox, and whose house was a knighted vassal house to the lords of malconaire. together, the lovers merged their lands, powers, and crests, ruling jointly over land partially belonging to the lords ormond and the lords malconaire
about two hundred years later, the last daughter of the main ormond branch died, unwed, leaving all her titles and powers and possessions to her distant cousins, themselves descended from kieran and tiarna
as a result, the ormonds were in the strange position of being at once equal to the lords of malconaire as well as their vassal lords
because of this, they were undeniably lord malconaire's most powerful bannermen, but there was a great deal of uncertainty as to whether or not they would answer the late lord malconaire's call to banners when he went to fight the varmonts at the battle of malconaire (particularly given the tension between ruairi and cillian), but both lordly claimants to the title of lord of ormond joined forces and rode to their deaths to help save their country (ride of the rohirrim style) and, though the day was lost, whatever the character of the late ruairi ormond may have been, he is and his nephew alike are both viewed with honor by most loyal astairans as, whatever their differences, in the end they put them aise to do what they believed was right

UPDATE 02.24.24
Hi, friends!!!! <3
I love seeing so much activity over the last few weeks!!! Sorry I've been MIA. I'm going to go on a semi-hiatus from now until March 17th. (We are adding a new show at work starting in March and so things are v busy w/ planning and rehearsals, etc. I'll still be around but I def use down time at work on comments and there's less of that right now). And then I will be out of town from March 13th-March 17th and won't have my computer at all, but after all of that, things should (hopefully!) level out for me again!
I've gotten so many notifications to look through this morning (which I love <3) but I'm also afraid I will def miss some things, so if you have any questions related to the general rp/my characters that I've missed, please message/tag/post/smoke signal me and I'll answer it!!!

I figured it was about time that I finally gave Valentina's OG House a name. I've settled on Vasilieva (which literally translates to "royal").

ok so, based on lizzy's idea of black w snakes, and paired w the fact that valentina's only v distantly related to royalty, this is a mockup i did for valentina's og crest! i went w sable/argent/vert/tawny as the primary color scheme (and am only just now putting together that i think i was really channeling house slytherin but whtever i stand by that we all know valentina'd be a slytherin lsdkfjklsdfkljsdf ANYWAY!! im thinking that the ram/serpent motif is the og royal one but the moline cross and crescent showcase that valentina is descended from the eighth son of a prince who was, himself, descended from the second son of a king soooo yeah, not exactly next in line till roderick decided to change all of that ;DDDD
Serpent: Wisdom, knowledge, defiance; fertility and renewal; medicine
Ram: Authority & leadership; strength, perseverence
Goat: Political ability, diplomat/diplomacy, practical wisdom; persistence and strength
Sable (black): Constancy or grief
Vert (green): Hope, joy, and loyalty in love
Argent (silver/white): Peace & sincerity
Tawny or Tenné (orange/brown): Worthy ambition
Crown: Heaven; victory, sovereignty, empire; success
Crescent: One who has been honored by the sovereign; hope/ hope of greater glory; service in holy war/House of the second son
Cross/Moline Cross: Service in holy war; faith/House of the eighth son (or, as used in conjunction with the crescent, house of an eighth son from the line of a second son)
Ermine or Fur: Dignity
ANYWAYYYY, when she got married that got adapted, and since she was of royal blood, her kids get to wear the crests of both their parents, perhaps smth...like...this...?
literally just used the first vaguely nautical sigil (since its the riverbend) w the default colors as an example to represent what their dad's sigil might've been, but yeah since their mom, being of royal blood, technically outranks their dad, they would have been permitted to slice their arms to use the sinister (no, really, that's just the word for 'left' in latin -- romans had weird supersticions abt the left and that's why sinister means what it means to us but, anyway, its what the mother's side is called when you get to use that and, obv, it therefore appears on the left -- as assigned from the pov of the person carrying the shield which pov i forgot when i initially made this which is why the words are backwards bc i flipped it since they later changed which side is sinister and which is dexter [right/paternal] lkasdjflkjsdflkj)
so yeah!! that's a mock up and i wondered what you thought? i def think the dad's side needs some work (im actually thinking, personally, that a portcullis could be cool esp bc its symbolic meaning is 'protection in an emergency' and that's precisely what valentina failed to give them aklsjdfkldsjfsdf annnd its what cassimir is sort of promising to eithne so yeah idk thought it had ~meaning but yeah anywayyy alksjdflkjsdf)
anyway!! smth along these lines would've been the family sigil that valentina and her kids would've been entitled to wear from the day of her marriage, so yeah! when valentina married lord m, the stepkids might've either quartered their arms (dad/val/mal/val probs), or they perhaps might've just left it as the above? once they were adopted (or 'adopted' ;D), the stepkids would've been entitlted to wear the malconaire arms. after her marriage, valentina probs took to using a val/malconaire split herself, but whatever her kids wanted to do would be their own call once they're formally entitled to use any arms they want etc. they could also potentially rest a crown over whatever their dad's sigil was to mark that they, themselves, are of royal blood, and valentina would defff encourage this and even more so after the rest of the royal line is wiped out laksjdfkljdsf
(also just realized i used a mullet instead of a moline in the second mockup, so just imagine that's a moline cross not a star on the cresent in the second one laksdjfklsdjafkljsdf this is why i really shouldn't try to do anything after a tag sale day hahaha)
anyway gonna respond to the overarching thing soon but when you set the challenge of 'like valles but not' i was like 'that sounds like fun!!' hahahaha (tho also lowkey hc'ing that they're related to the valles somehow -- we know the ~mega bad news came from house karr anyway soooo i think it works ;DDD)
