How do Kaze's numbers compare to the men's votes in the other's polls?

In terms of overall total votes: He has significantly more total votes than both Chrom and Frederick did by their third matchup (and more votes than both of them accumulated overall), but he's behind where Dimitri and Dedue were at this point in the 3H polls

I don't know if he'll be able to achieve Dimitri or Dedue's final numbers (1700 and 1500 total votes respectively), but there's still two more polls to go and he actually isn't that far behind where they were after their quarterfinals, so it's possible

In terms of averages: He's polling pretty in line with Chrom (far ahead of Frederick). He's averaging about a dozen more votes than Chrom per poll, and about 25 fewer votes per poll than Dimitri was at the end of round 3. He's averaging 75 fewer votes than Dimitri per poll if you account for all of Dimitri's matchups.

It'll really depend on how his matchups going forward. Matchups with more popular/bigger characters tend to draw more votes, close matches tend to draw more votes, and the semifinals and finals tend to draw more votes.

Hot Take

Not to be a hater but going from 3H portraits in battle to the little animations in Engage is such an upgrade.

Like, in Awakening when characters got below half health their in-combat portrait switches to the distressed one to showcase that they were in pain. And in Fates and Echoes, the portraits changed to show whether the upcoming matchup was neutral, good, or bad. It was cool!!!

3H didn’t have that with its portraits in battle, and with the models being pretty non expressive in general, it made things pretty boring. Like, the only comparable instance is when your characters are in low health and get a critical hit and the models show an uneasy look for a split second, and that just wasn’t the same.

The Engage characters doing little stances before engaging (heh) an enemy and when equipping a ring do a lot to help give the game an energy that 3H kind of lacked.

Fire Emblem Engage Thoughts

I finished the main story recently and thought I would note down my thoughts on the game.

TL;DR: Definitely buy the game if you enjoy Fire Emblem’s battle system. If you’re looking for a deep story or something that involves the supporting cast more, this isn’t the game for you. But if you can tolerate the weak plot, I think it’s generally a fun time.

Story spoilers for the whole game are included, so tread carefully under the cut!

Things I liked:

The battle system!! The engage system adds a really interesting dimension to the base tactical RPG system and I like how it makes things quite more flexible (you can either use it to make the game easier or try out some interesting matchups to see what happens).

I also enjoyed the maps in general! They make me think, especially the later maps but not to the extent where I find it unfun to try and strategize/figure things out there.

The rewind mechanic for when you mess up. I love tactical JRPGs but one thing I’ve hated about them is having to restart a whole ass 30-min battle from the very beginning when I mess something up. So for me this is a really nice qol thing because I do not have so much time in the world to keep restarting battles that I fuck up.

The Japanese voice acting is really great. It allowed me to tolerate one of the biggest issues I had with the game (the story) and factored in to my enjoyment.

The character models and animations. They are so fluid and also good. I like that you can see them animated too before you commit to an action.

Them making the Somniel as your base (similar to what they did for Garreg Mach Monastery in 3H, though with a caveat–see stuff in “Things I wish this game had”)

Things I didn’t like:

The story in general, but I think it’s more an issue of, it’s not what I’m looking for in a plot. I could see why the simpler storytelling might appeal to some people, but I prefer a lot more morally grey characters and while one can argue that they do exist in this story, I’m not sure I like the execution of said characters. Specific bones I have to pick with:

Lumerra’s introduction and death. At first I was a bit suspicious of her because, wow, isn’t it convenient to have a very kind mother?? And apparently she IS a kind mother all along indeed, BUT THEN. She’s killed off really early and honestly while the voice-acting in that scene was really great, the way it hits you out of nowhere is just… jarring? In the sense of it’s hard to feel anything about it because you barely knew Lumerra.

In general, everyone’s acceptance that you are the Divine Dragon and having zero doubts about it. Like a little more suspicion would have been neat to play into, even if it’s easy to prove that you are who you say you are.

The game’s habit of telling you ALL about an antagonist’s backstory and motivations before they get killed (either by your hand or someone else’s). They repeat this formula so much, even for the big bad and it’s just. One heck of a text vomit without any creativity to it, and we’re just supposed to accept how it is. It doesn’t make the characters very redeemable to me though, but I wish they exercised more creativity in getting people’s motivations across.

Sombron is such a bad offender, maybe I just don’t pay attention to his lines very well but there was little to no indication that he was doing everything just so he could reunite with an Emblem. The whole time it’s really just postured as “this guy wants to take over the world(s)”

I understand this is typical of older games in the series and large casts, but the lack of relevance of most characters after the chapter you acquire them is kinda meh in my opinion.

The minigame controls. Coupled with my controller drift issues, my poor A button is just never gonna be the same way again, huh. I think the wyvern ride one is quite fun, but the reliance of spamming the A button isn’t the best way to handle some stuff I feel, especially with the way the Switch controller is designed. I know I can just get a controller or something. But still.

Gold being so scarce in the game. I never had a gold issue in the past games I’ve played as I would earn it passively by not spending on things so much, but in Engage you can’t even do that. It seems like a ploy to get you to buy the DLC as it has some stuff there that will make your life easier, so that kind of adds to the mixed feelings I have regarding the situation.

Most characters being very one note, and it reflecting in their supports. Like if you have a character who was an antagonist turned into an ally, half/most of their supports will end up with them being eager to make amends. If someone likes muscles/training, that’s also gonna be most of their lines and their supports. But it’s a very taste-based thing, and granted I haven’t looked at everyone’s supports yet, so I might change this bullet point in the future.

Things I wish this game had:

More unique dialogue in the Somniel based on what point of the story you’re in. There are some unique dialogue for plot-relevant characters but it would have been interesting to see what the others thought too instead of their dialogues changing depending on where they were located. I think this would also solve the problem where the characters don’t feel relevant to the story anymore after you acquire them.

Lengthier support conversations. Wishful thinking, but the supports in general felt really abrupt, though this is nothing new in FE. Some were pretty deep/thoughtful, but most didn’t really leave much space for characterization.

Please let us change people’s clothes in battle. It was a little disappointing since you spend more time in battle than in the Somniel. The clothes customization in this game is pretty nice, but I guess they just left it to the Somniel because rigging those properly for battle was probably extra work they didn’t have time to properly test/implement.

My rating in numbers: 6/10 if I had to account for the plot, 8/10 if we’re just focusing on gameplay/how fun I found it.

To end this more positively, Diamant, Ivy, and Seadall are my favorite characters. Ivy (with Celica) and Alcryst (with Lyn) are my MVPs, with a special mention to Seadall and Emblem Byleth for letting me do some crazy stuff in one turn. Chloe was also really fun both in and out of battle (okay, I also like Saori Hayami) and training Anna to be my gold farmer eventually paid off lmao. Praise be to Anna.

I was doing the FE character sorter and of course, thought way too deeply about everything and it turned into a whole thing about gameplay and what makes characters stand out.

First, gameplay does matter to my perception of characters, even when I’m not consciously taking it into account. In the sorter, I’d often get a matchup like, say, Seteth vs. Safy. Now I love Seteth. He’s one of my favorite characters for how he subverts the expectation that he’ll be a strict authoritarian and is in reality a genuinely kind and caring person who wants the best for his students and shows incredible insight into their struggles on both a personal and systemic level. Safy on the other hand? I can’t tell you anything about her personality other than “generic gentle cleric,” and she barely speaks, forget about having character development. And yet when I saw that matchup I automatically went for Safy, because playing Thracia and relying heavily on her to pull off cool strategies left me with an incredible fondness that comes out automatically even when I’m trying to avoid considering her as a unit and only as a character.

Tangentially related is something I often think about: unit uniqueness. Safy is memorable to so many players because she enables player creativity in a unique way. Seteth is a decent enough unit, but in the context of 3H he’s not that memorable. Even combat gods like Seth, Titania, or Haar make you feel powerful but ultimately don’t feel all that distinctive to play. Toss them in the middle of a bunch of enemies with a hand axe and watch them go. Safy can’t do that, but she can make you feel like a fucking genius when you come up with a strategy centered on her unique abilities and beat the Saias chapter before he and his ten ridiculous leadership stars show up. The trend towards open classing is all well and good, but the more allowances are given for creative builds, the less allowance there is for creative strategizing. The developers have no clue what abilities the player has on hand. So you get fewer of these intricate puzzle maps that reward good use of the tools you’re given and more of ‘warp and kill boss’ maps that all feel exactly the same as each other.

When you were describing yourself it reminded me a lot of Felix and Bernadetta’s supports! Obviously you’re very different from her as an extrovert, but her whole dynamic with Felix is that once she sees him smile once she spends a bunch of time with him so she can try to make him smile more. Also the bit about cold-hearted people is 1000% Felix LMAO. Although some people think that Felix would date an equally stubborn asshole, I personally think that being easygoing would be a perfect trait. As long as you don’t let people walk all over you, which he would get pissed about purely out of concern, having an easygoing nature makes you handle Felix’s rough edges better than most. Unfortunately in terms of insecurity, Felix would probably find out about some of yours by accidentally taking it too far and saying some mean shit he doesn’t mean..BUT he’d be really mad at himself for it and would listen to how you feel and what you need. If there’s a way that he can make it up to you, he’ll do it gladly if you tell him, since he’s really bad at figuring it out on his own. He does really care though, and he would appreciate your equal devotion. In the future if anyone else says some mean shit that taps into your insecurities, they’re getting stabbed. As much as he hates how he discovered them, he appreciates you confiding in him about your weaknesses and he will make it his job to be aware of those things and protect you from them! This is also a really random headcanon but I think that since Felix is really awkward with affection he would just occasionally give a s/o shorter than him head pats because he doesn’t know what else to do 😭😭

That said, he clings to you like a magnet when a battle is not being fought- your hand always in his, as for him, it is a physical reminder that you’re there - alive and well. ✦ He lives for ideals - he yearns to be a regal knight, even in love. He will take it slow, and, whether you like it or not, will be cheesy and fairytale-esque. He thinks of you as the Goddess herself, and creating something together would be something he would yearn for life. To him, to be able to start a family with the one he truly loves, like an ideal love story, is an ode to his adoptive father and his teachings.

If you’d ever take an interest in Almyran art history or fashion the man will love you forever. Honestly just taking an interest in the Almyran culture, history, etc. Will increase his love tenfold
