Book Review #141 of 2022--

Reluctantly Married by Victorine E. Lieske. Rating: 1.5 stars.

Read from December 28th to 30th.

Wow was that BAD. I got the complete Married series by Victorine E. Lieske for really cheap in an eBook bind up and boy do I really need to remember never to buy those again. A) there’s a reason they’re cheap, B) if I don’t like the series I still have all these books. The first problem is that you have to bend over backwards in order to not constantly question the character’s actions and the plot at every single turn. The second problem is that the author makes sure to keep the romance “clean” (ugh) so that you don’t even have any real fun reasons to root for the romance. If a romance is bad, at least there's chemistry or something to keep the reader engaged. Not with this series. All you can hope for it a quick and easy read. The only reason it took as long as it did was because I kept having to force myself to pick it up. I will say that this harebrained premise might actually work in the right hands. These hands just weren’t it.

Jing Yuan slipping into bed after coming home from working overtime, stirring you awake even though he was utmost careful in doing so.

“Welcome home…” you sit up to greet him in almost a mumble, half-asleep.

As you shortly lay back and quickly drift off to sleep again, you snuggle up to him.

His expression is in rare bewilderment as he looks at you beside him, a blush dusted across his face in the darkness. A soft smile breaks into his lips as he brings you even closer by wrapping an arm around you.

Your words and gesture were so simple, yet it made him feel unbelievably loved and so lucky to have you.

“I’m home,” he whispers.

Help, I have fallen into rarepair hell with Jing Yuan/Fu Xuan. That comment he left about her in the 1/5 update killed me. It’s just so cute how both of them will shit-talk each other while simultaneously being Very Concerned about each other’s life choices. Massive hypocrites the both of them.

And what is even Fu Xuan’s deal? Her character story tells us that she resented gaining her position due to a divination, but that the events at the end of the war made her accept fate. Her actions tell a different story though.

If Fu Xuan truly accepted that divination is absolute, then why join the Laofu at the end of the war? Why not become Master Diviner of the Yuque as everyone intended? Why throw herself into campaigning for Jing Yuan’s job, when becoming a leader of the Cloud Knights wasn’t ever on her career radar?

I’ll bet she’s foreseen that Jing Yuan will die if he continues on as the Arbiter-General. And I’ll also bet that she hasn’t given up on subverting fate.

Sam: How do you guys handle a break up?

Blade: Murder-suicide.
