Learning to Love Slowly
Parings; Jason Todd x Female Reader (1) Pride and Prejudice and Hair (2) Seven-Eleven Karens and Pinky Promises at 3 AM (3) Google and Hand Holding
4- Cookies and The Butler and The Girlfriend
“And what are you smiling at?”
Jason whipped his head to see Alfred standing across the kitchen at the stove, tying an apron around his waist with eyebrows arched in question. If they were at the manor and not his apartment, he would have lied straight through his teeth-despite how much it would hurt to tell anything but the truth to one of the people Jason trusted and loved most in the world. He thought of a couple of lies he could say, but all of them seemed to be so outlandish that Alfred would know immediately.
“Just a girl I’ve been seeing for a while,” Jason almost whispered, almost like he was worried that someone other than the butler was listening. He put his phone into his back pocket, though the text you sent was still being read over and over again in the back of his mind.
Alfred didn’t bother to suppress the smile that crossed his face. “Oh, and what’s this girl’s name?”
The vigilante paused for a second before answering, and that seemed to please Alfred. He continued to prepare everything, and waited for Jason to say more.
When Jason didn’t, Alfred did.
“How long have you been seeing each other?” The question was followed by the butler ordering the boy to not just stand there and help grab the ingredients he had gotten from the bags.
Jason answered as he placed butter, white sugar, and all the other ingredients for the cookies on the counter. “I’ve known her for a year, but, officially, two months--Almost, anyway.”
“Start measuring,” Alfred said, setting the oven to preheat. “Well, what is she like?”
Jason stumbled through the words describing you. Perfect. Kind. Funny. Goofy. Everything you were made Gotham brighter to him, though, that he didn’t say that to Alfred.
And, most importantly, patient.
“She also makes cookies as good as yours.”
Now, that earned a smile from the old man. “I believe I have to meet her now. Come over here and start stirring. No time to dilly dally.”
--
Later that night Jason found you laying on the couch re-watching an old episode of Hey Arnold!. When he entered through the window, he presented you with the Robin Tupperware now filled with Alfred’s cookies, filling you in on how he told the butler of yours. You took the Tupperware to the kitchen under your arm, munching on a cookie as you did.
“Where are you going?” Jason asked.
You peeked your head out, mouth still full of cookies, “I have to bake Alfred cookies now. He needs to know how good mine are. Level the playing field for our future bake-off. Come help me, Jaybeans!”
The Text; Do you think if they made a Robin blender, they would call it The Boy Blender?
...
Please tell me you get that joke, Babe.

My Personal Ranking For the Oscar Nominated Animated Short Films of 2023
I got to watch these shorts in a local theater yesterday, and it was quite a spectacular time.
Note: I am not ranking these based on the quality of the film, but based on how much I personally liked the film.  There is definitely a difference.  I have come to terms with the fact that I sometimes don’t personally like media that is Objectively Good, and sometimes get unfortunately invested in things that are questionable quality.
With that out of the way, let’s delve in.
1. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse
Tumblr media
I, too, am surprised that this was my favorite of the short films. Dare I say, I feel a bit basic.  Perhaps I’ll hang up a Live, Laugh, Love sign next.
I’m especially surprised, because I actually have more critiques regarding it than I do with other short films that I liked less. Specifically, the dialogue could sound like platitudes, which is a pet peeve of mine with any media.
But it’s absolutely beautiful.  It’s among the most beautiful animation I’ve ever seen, and seeing it on the big screen was nothing short of an emotional experience.
The animation and designs made me love each character, and made the dialogue -- which, in a less beautiful film, might have been enough to put me off liking it -- feel heartfelt.  I can’t praise the creative team behind this film enough for the manner in which they brought these characters to life.  The voice performances are also commendable.
Perhaps most importantly, it put me in touch with my inner child.  Wizard of Oz, Jungle Book, James and the Giant Peach, Spirited Away, Kubo -- there is a timeless impulse among children, it would seem, to be befriended and loved by benevolent talking animals or fantastical creatures.
It is perhaps because of my inner child that I love this film so much. My childhood self might have been oblivious to the beautifully simplistic depth of Ice Merchants, the blink-and-you-miss-it beats that make The Flying Sailor so meaningful, bewildered by My Year of Dicks, and existentially terrified by An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake, but my desire for a big white talking horsey is timeless and powerful.
Where to watch it: Apple TV+
2. My Year of Dicks
Tumblr media
This one is just. So unspeakably funny.  And, despite the fact that I’m a raging Sapphic who’s never been interested in the dicks available to me, I found it intensely relatable.
This may be a controversial statement, but I find that mainstream Hollywood’s attempts to nail down the Female Gaze are often more obnoxious than the Male Gaze itself.  Partially because it often revolves around what male executives think The Modern Woman(TM) finds appealing, rather than an actual understanding of the female experience.  The Male Gaze, at the very least, feels somewhat organic and based in the personal experience of the filmmakers.
This -- this felt like the Female Gaze.  A truly organic trip through the psychology, impulses, and emotions of a fifteen-year-old girl.  It treated its female protagonist not as unknowable, but as relatable, with the five unpleasant male characters she was approaching as Other -- each in five wildly entertaining ways.  And it was glorious.
The way the main character dramatized her experiences -- making full use of the animated world in which she lived -- was something I could relate to viscerally.  I’m reluctant to mention anything else about the plot, as I truly encourage everyone to just experience it firsthand.  It’s heartfelt, exquisitely ‘90s, and a beautiful animated tribute to teenhood and questionable decisions.
Where to watch it: Vimeo, Hulu
3. Ice Merchants
Tumblr media
Such a beautiful and emotional experience.  I would say that this film demonstrates that less is more, but really, it demonstrates that the illusion of less is more.  In reality, this film is teaming with detail, from the beautifully textured ice and misty landscape below, to the subtle indications of the characters’ recently experienced loss.
I was so entranced by the visual beauty and surrealist elements of this film, it took me a while to grasp its actual storyline: subtle clues, presented by a yellow mug, indicate the loss of the ice merchant’s wife and the mother of his son, and the cold world in which they live comes to represent their grief.
Without giving much away, the film ends with a view of a spring landscape, representing the eventual thaw of this grief as father and son begin to heal.
Where to watch: YouTube
4.  The Flying Sailor
Tumblr media
This beautiful and strange animation is based off of a true story, in which a sailor was flung 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) by the Halifax explosion in 1917, and lived to tell about it.
This film is essentially the sailor’s life flashing before his eyes as he soars, naked, over the exploding landscape. We get to know his character through the blink-and-you-miss-it moments that we witness of his life.
My favorite moment of the film was when he lights a cigarette at the same instant a ship in the harbor (unbeknownst to him, full of dynamite) catches fire. His -- and our -- quiet shock as we realize what we’re looking at is haunting.  He even steps on the match, as if in a subconscious effort to put out the blaze, just as the contents of the ship explodes and nearly ends his life.
Where to watch it: YouTube
5.  An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It
Tumblr media
Just because I rank this film last doesn’t mean it isn’t good.  It’s incredibly good, and an inventive way to portray a character’s existential crisis through a stop-motion medium.
Ultimately, this is a story about a man realizing how meaningless his life has become while working at an unfulfilling office job.  But that makes the film sound way more mundane than it actually is.  The way in which this existential crisis is portrayed is through the main character realizing that he and his fellow workers are all stop-motion puppets, after he is visited by the titular ostrich.
And I do like it a great deal, but the reason for it subjectively ranking below the other films is the simple fact that the other films left me with a more positive emotional feeling.  This one...is kind of terrifying.
I wonder if the director was inspired by the 1965 stop motion The Hand, in which a gloved human hand is used as a source of horror in the world of a stop motion puppet.  In a similar manner, human hands look uncanny in this film when contrasted with the main character and his puppet world.
Anyway, go watch it and have an existential crisis of your own.  I recommend it.
Where to watch it: Vimeo

Hey can you remind me when Imogen confirmed her attraction to men? (Not because I don’t think she’s bi, I definitely do. I just have terrible working memory and want to be able to reference her history when I write docs.) Was it the boy she worked with back in the stables?
Gorgynei already said something about it but yeah, it was Sam and most importantly, it was Sam in a way that Imogen hasn't really sounded as comfy or wistful about elsewhere. The thing is that it's less about "I'm gonna defend this past attraction as a huge canon identifier thing" so much as "I AM going to actively push back on the tendency for fandom spaces to decide that any and every female character is fair game to be called a lesbian unless she explicitly wants to bone a guy and doesn't say psych" (note how quickly fearne got dropped from the wlw conversation as soon as she was serious about calling chetney's bluff) and overall biphobia in this fandom is absolutely insane. It also matters that Imogen was an active participant in the date with Pretty, which you can argue was for deception or laughs but which she took very seriously.
I know that for the most part, people calling imogen and laudna lesbians are mostly tongue in cheek/casual about it - projecting the normal way we all do on our faves. but it speaks to a greater trend of r*dfem koolaid insisting that 1) attraction to men makes you impure 2) lesbians can only be pure and 3) if I like this character then she can't be attracted to men (usually with an "uwu no offense to men" that is wholly insincere). I can't speak for others, but I wouldn't be so insistent on respecting the very possibility/few facts of a bi character if the rest of fandom wasn't hell bent on doing powerpoints about how they cannot possibly be bi and actually they're a lesbian and if you don't agree you're literally homophobic.
And that's about all the energy I have to spend on this today. I know it was more than you bargained for so thanks for listening.
Edit: I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT THE LITRERAL EVERYTHING WITH DORIAN. How many times did she fall back on the idea that the two of them were boning or up for boning?? That was like a whole strategy for a stretch of episodes there.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
the issue here is i have a recency issue. they cycle out depending on what i’ve consumed recently. so ill forget a blorbo and be sad about it. also i have a predilection for sad little bisexual guys so it’s very skewed
1. one of my OGs is will parry from his dark materials. he’s of that type of male character that is relentlessly kind shonen protagonist who keeps being forced into violence but doesnt want to. also the original book boyfriend next to percy jackson. 12 year old me was obsessed. i loved prince caspian and half the narnia boys for the same reason, and when i watched fullmetal alchemist this was why alphonse elric was my favorite elric brother. (this is also why i love yuji, tanjiro, and deku very dearly)
2. probably one of my first blorbos of all time was elphaba from wicked, hence my old URL. reading that book too early changed my brain chemistry. area leftist of a marginalized identity maligned by society and also bisexual as hell. she will always be my first and forever girly. you can imagine what happened to me when i met wei wuxian, who is essentially the same character. i went nuts
3. the funny little bisexual man who covers his pain with humor and cares so deeply usually goes on the list. one of my first was and always will be Sokka, but percy jackson fills this role as well as my beloveds, Satoru Gojo, and Vash the Stampede
4. funny little bisexual man who covers his pain with humor and is doomed by the narrative could cover many already mentioned but Nicholas D. Wolfwood remains the pinnacle. he’s very important to me. ive made a lot of posts about him but him representing this existential dread that you’ll die before you find happiness haunts me
5. the secondary villain who becomes a begrudging part of the team for comedy also always is a favorite but Greed from FMA has always stuck with me. an embodiment of one of humanity’s sins finding peace because the thing he most coveted became the love of others and not material wants got my ass
6. i understand there arent many women on this list and while i have favorite female characters in many pieces of media they dont often make the top list, however asajj ventress goes on the list. her story even before dark disciple is one of the best in star wars. as u can tell i have a predilection for evil women maligned in society
7. maul is also one of my favorites of all time. they really resurrected him and made him the most compelling in the narrative. the tragedy that he wont let go even in his last moments always gets me. watching twin suns actually broke me. his story in rebels was airing in a part of my life where i really identified with him as someone gifted yet ignored and thrown away and it got me
8. shocking absolutely no one, while sailor moon is one of my favorite pieces of media of all time and it is largely about women, my blorbo is tuxedo mask, mamoru chiba, the like ONE guy. he’s pathetic, he’s bisexual, and he’s also one of my first anime crushes of all time. more importantly he has been wronged by many adaptations and i must fight for his honor.
9. the Doctor remains ever important to me, especially 9, but them as a character. probably the same as Vash and Xie Lian, the sad immortal character cursed to constantly be alone who doesn’t want to hurt people always gets my ass
10. Rapunzel from Tangled has always been a very special blorbo for reasons i wont share online but that series had my ass in a vice grip for a reason

:demian: hello... let's start with the right foot. Le sinkle
Hiii :milfspotted: the sinkle sweep…!
Favorite thing: the everything 💕💕 teehee uhm let’s see I really like how he’s still growing so much as a person and we get to watch him figure himself out. I also love how in every mirror world you get such a good look into his internal struggles and how he develops in different environments. And he’s so cute and darling and also kills people so well
Least favorite thing: everything about him is perfect. uhm. jefe and zwei should have been made usable at UT4 - they make me cry rn. I dislike that he doesn’t have a charge ID. I’m saddened by the fact she hasn’t transitioned yet.
Favorite line: Currently can’t stop thinking about the love letters convo… “I was…! I was… a good, diligent student. The only things I ever cared about were my textbooks and the school lectures!” / “Sinclair, thy countenance appeareth to be turning rosy agai—“ / “For the last time, I said! It's! Genetics!!!” <- he’s literally so cute. I can’t believe demisin is real.
brOTP: Sinkle Yi Sang and Don Quixote besties for life… I love that little trio… I also love how Rodya and Gregor tease him… all of his friendships are really fun
OTP: demisin forever yayyyy soulmates I love you so much
nOTP: kr/osin should explode and die i fucking hate it so much get that awful fucking woman away from him unless it’s giving him the chance to tear her head off. She’s so ugly I hate her I hate her I hate her. (Deep breath) sorry I’m normal again what was the question?
Random headcanon: oh what to even pick… he needs glasses… he loves playing pikmin…. sometimes he gets anxious eating in front of other people because of the months spent being the only one eating at the dinner table with his family…. his room on the bus often turns into his childhood bedroom and for a while he would wake up thinking the last few years were just a dream…
Unpopular opinion: 1) she’s a woman 2) she’s a female and 3) and most importantly: shes a girl !
Song I associate with them: when you were young by the killers… waiting on some beautiful boy to.. save you from your old ways…. So sinclaircore
Favorite picture of them: I can’t believe they made girlclair real just for me. World is so beautiful…

1 moon. Leaf-bare. Birth.
Tumblr media
And so Rimekit, Whorlkit, Slightkit and Grousekit are born. It is even interesting that Rimekit is the only boy in their litter and that none of the kittens inherited the emerald eyes of both parents. But in general they are similar to Whimsyrock and Roachrumble in appearance

Rimekit: Polite, Male Whorlkit: Insecure, Female Slightkit: Lonesome, Female Grousekit: Nervous, Female

Initiation into the warriors!
Despite the fact that Milkweedpaw was indecisive and nervous for her mentor, even for combat, she became a warrior for other qualities - namely, realism and good hunting skills. Now she's Milkweedfuzz.
Saplingpaw becomes a warrior with a new name Saplingfur for commitment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milkweedfuzz: nervous, good hunter, Female Saplingfur: ambitious, natural intuition, Female
2 moon. Leaf-bare.
Tumblr media
Haha, Rimekit and Slightkit play.
And… Rimekit will somehow become the most beloved kitten of both parents. It's just that, seriously, Whimsyrock and Roachrumble don't even feel warm towards their daughters. It seems that they see their daughters as "weak" because of their character traits and therefore they love their son more than them… But the good news is: Rimekit maintain a good relationship with her sisters!
(it's funny by the way that, despite the fact that his mother kind of loves him, Rimekit himself does not have such warm feelings for her. Just look, this is how Rimekit treats her! Dude, what did she do to you personally, maybe you were offended by her because she doesn't appreciate your beloved sisters? Especially in relation to Slightkit, although this girl looks exactly like her mother! It seems that they were born in such a strict family, where the main thing is not love and care for each other without dividing into anything, but most importantly that the children are "useful" for the tribe. I think that's how it works.)

Initiation into the warriors!

11, 17, 3, 2 for the oc creation thingie
2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?
✪ Nora: Sort of? I've mentioned before that Nora was built with the idea of looking at the story of Fo4 and what the game lets you do and going "Who would do all this though? And how would they react to it all?".
Who would venture forth into a dangerous and unknown world to reunite with the last bit of their family and pre-war life left? Facing centuries old foes and going above and beyond what most people would be able to withstand? Who would befriend all of the companions and help them with their troubles? Who would don the mantle of The Silver Shroud to bring safety to a troubled town and make a lonely old ghoul feel better? And most importantly, what the hell are they thinking this whole time?
So, she's not specifically designed to just fit with any one character, but they definitely factor into who she ultimately is. From companions, to other characters important to the main story, and even smaller side characters. The interactions she's expected to have with others definitely factor into who she is built to be.
Of all of the companions, I'd say Preston and Nick have the most impact on how I made her, mostly because of them playing large parts in the roads she has to go down (main story and Minutemen stuff).
✝ Alberta: I did also build Al off of my knowledge of Fo3, having played a ton in the past but not so much recently. So there's a lot there that impacts who Al is overall: James relationship with a female Wanderer (he talks differently to a son), Butch and the Tunnel Snakes, playing baseball in the vault, etc.
But I originally created them to see how Nora would react to The Wanderer, and posed an opportunity to show Nora a bit of a dark mirror for herself considering the similarities between their origins and motivations. Also how the differences in their environment and MO changes things too - like if the two had swapped roles, how different would things be then? Better for 3 but worse for 4? How different could Al have been if they had supportive friends from the start like Nora does? Would Nora be so worse off if she'd had to struggle and learned to distrust others as Al had(yes)?
Most everything else came after that. The gremlin took over my mind. Just took a seat and said "I live here now."
3. How did you choose their name?
✪ Nora: Default female character name. Sosu is obviously a play on 'Sole Survivor', but that's actually Nate's last name. Nora's full maiden name is 'Nora Diane Peel'.
The other parts of her name come from actress Diana Rigg and her character Emma Peel from The Avengers (not marvel - an old B&W tv series). The character is cited as being some of Bethesda's inspiration for what the female PC would be like.
I actually also used this name for Nora's mother, keeping the 'Diana' spelling for her. This also means that in my canon Nora's mother sort of named her daughter after herself a little, which is on brand for her.
✝ Alberta: When Fallout 3 was being announced they used 'Albert' as a placeholder name for showing some of the gameplay. This was likely a callback to Fallout 1, where one of the default player options was called that.
I took it and ran with the idea that James and Catherine had chosen that name assuming they were having a boy, but Al came out afab and Catherine died, so James kept the name they chose together and just 'feminised' it. Al thinks that's dumb and also doesn't really like being called by their full first name - it sounds like an old lady name, and they are neither old nor a lady in any sense.
11. already answered here!
17. Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?
Not really. I haven't had the chance, since I'm still in the early writing phases and I don't commit to anything on these things if I'm not mostly sure of it - also avoiding telling spoilers.
That said, there have of course been moments where I think through a potential story bit and decide it doesn't work. Nothing to mention though.
