Film Review: Broker (2022)

Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda

I’ve been wanting to watch this movie because of IU (I’m a big fan— uaena here!).

This film definitely made it to my top-tier list. Everything was beautifully executed— the story line, the visuals (the visuals are so good), the characters’ stories and what makes them who they are and how circumstances drives them to make such decisions, down to the tiny details and conversations. Hirokazu Koreeda’s Broker is a beautiful film.

I wouldn’t say the film was slow or fast paced. It was just the right amount of everything. The detours that the group had while searching for a buyer didn’t made the film boring at all.

The scene that I liked the most was Lee Ji-eun telling them “태어나줘서 고마워” (Thank you for being born). The fact that Dong-Soo (Gang Dong-Won) and Hae-Jin (Lim Seung-Soo) didn’t have a mother to thank them for being born and hearing it from the mother of the baby they were trying to sell was emotional enough. It made me sad. It was an intimate moment and it made me fall in love with the film.

Bae Doona’s character (Soo-Jin) also adds to the film’s goal of selling the baby. I read a review that her character was the most desperate one to sell the baby in order to catch Sang-Hyun (Song Kang-Ho) in the act and put him behind bars. I do empathize on Soo-Jin’s hatred to mothers who abandon their babies and her lack of empathy towards So-Young (Lee Ji-Eun) and the baby are understandable as it’s the reason why she’s tailing the brokers in the first place. But I’d like to know more as to where that hatred is coming from.

I think the character with the least impact on the film was Detective Lee (Lee Joo-Young). I loved her in Itaewon Class, but in this film there was not really much to say about her character except to question Soo-Jin’s way of thinking.

In the end, it made me question why a baby box is legal but abortion is not. I do understand its purpose but if I start to question all the whys, it will be a battle of one’s conscience between what is right and wrong. And Broker raised this question, but not as much as (it had)— at least in my opinion to move people and question their philosophy in life.

This is my first time watching one of Koreeda’s works. I’ll definitely keep tabs of his other films. I heard it was also good. I would say, though Broker doesn’t surpass the best films out there, it is definitely worth watching.

09052022 : The One With Ross Wedding

We all know (F.R.I.E.N.D.S fans) about the episode when Ross said the name of Rachel in the altar while getting married with Emily. Most of us got annoyed about how Emily over reacted in the situation. I bet you also hated the fact that she want Rachel to be out of Ross’ life. I hated Emily after watching that episode.

Until one day, I have been called by a different name while on a trip with my Tinder date in Bangkok. This name has been existing even the time we first met met 2 years ago, until now, the name Roxanne still exists.

After a fun tour in Coron with Leigh, he called me Roxanne in the shuttle on our way back to our hotel. It felt weird at first, that my entire body get numbed and starting to realize how bad it feels to be in that situation. Then I realized, I was the Emily in my own sitcom. She wasn’t over reacting at all! In my case, it’s just minor but it hurts just like losing someone.

I tried to be rational as much as I can, but I can’t stop thinking the idea that he thinks of her while he is with me. This girl used to have a generic name on his phone and now with a full name. And I’m still labeled as the girl he met in Bangkok.

It really felt like shit. I cried, I pitied myself, I felt that I am not enough. Like why am I in this situation? Why is this happening to me? Why do I deserve this? I didn’t overcome all my past experiences to deserve this. After some discussion, he finally said he still doesn’t know what he wants.

Then it hit me real hard that I have invested feelings, time, money to the wrong person. To the person who is not yet whole, to the person who are still having fun and talking to A LOT of girls at the same time. Idk if he fucks them too but fuck him. Periodt.

Ps. I salute Emily for choosing herself.

Film Review: Seobok (2021)

Directed by Lee Yong-Ju

This movie is kind of similar with 마녀 (Subversion & The Other One) except it’s just Seobok versus humans— and human greed (which applies to both movies).

What I like about this movie is the relationship between Gong Yoo’s character Ki-Heon with Park Bo-Gum’s Seobok. Seobok seemed to have lived with no human connection at all (even being described as not human) despite being raised and taken care of by his own mother. He was a lab rat. He was made, not born.

Ki-Heon, albeit cold at first, treated Seobok as a regular human being and not a specimen. Seobok seemed to be aware of why he was actually made— a breakthrough to immortality (a project started by a greedy old man), and a mother’s grief from losing her son. Seobok asking Ki-Heon about living and dying, and which one should he be afraid of probably made Ki-Heon conclude that the kid was much more human than anyone else.

I think the strength of this movie relied on Ki-Heon and Seobok’s relationship with each other throughout the whole movie. How these two warmed up and eventually formed a bond. I especially liked the scene where Seobok starts to call Ki-Heon “형” (older brother) and made him a 돌탑 (doltap). Scenes that adds flavor to the movie would be Seobok’s first taste of the outside world— roaming the market and asking Ki-Heon to slow down so he could look around, getting that pair of white shoes to complete his whole look, and eating four bowls of ramen for the first time. The ending disappointed me though. But Seobok allowing Ki-Heon to put him to sleep (Ki-Heon agreeing so fast to do so) and trusting him that he’d take a bullet only from him was extremely sad.
