ppl who are like “there’s no way sokka’s art skills would improve, he’s ontologically bad at art” ummmm. dude. you realize that this is the mary sue of hobbies, right? this guy could out-westley westley. he would develop an immunity to iocane powder in less than a week because he’s just that prodigious. he became a kyoshi warrior who could best their leader in a matter of hours, and this was the first time he had ever trained in his life with an actual teacher and opponent. he mastered the sword in one day, if we’re to take piandao’s word for it (and considering his name is literally sword, he is clearly an expert). sokka looked at the rough schematics for hot air balloons after the eminent inventor in the world had spent who knows how long not able to get his idea to actually work like “uhhh…. this may sound obvious, but have you tried a lid???” he has borderline supernatural aim with a boomerang. he was dropped into a haiku battle knowing nothing about the form, and not only beat the leader of ba sing se’s premier haiku club, but also chose, completely unnecessarily, to make each verse rhyme. if he actually sat down and practiced drawing, maybe with some instruction from a trained artist, or easier beginner’s materials than ink and a brush (you’ve all seen my art, and I still cannot paint with ink and a brush), I think sokka would easily be able to produce a work on par with (if not superior to) the mona lisa by the following morning.

Tomgreg week 2023 day 2: hurt/comfort

“Hey Tom,” Greg greets cheerfully when a notably uncheerful Tom opens the door. He’s wrapped in a knit blanket like a cartoon character, red plaid pajama pants peeking underneath, clinging to the blanket while he glares at Greg. His hair is all over the place, up and down and up and down, more unkempt than Greg’s ever seen it- even when they got plastered together.

“You’re sick.” He deadpans, suddenly losing all his footing.

“I knew you were going to say something fucking weird Greg,” Tom comments, stuffed up and, based on his voice, half-dead, “but I really wasn’t expecting that.”

Greg clears his throat and holds up the container he brought, still warm in his hands.

“You’re sick, and um, I’m here to help!”

Tom seems dubious.

So, Okino experienced what I go thru on the weekly. Not fun, but he's becoming more... human? No, cognizant. That's the right word. I do think there's some sort of glitch in his programming, bc we've seen one other guide and he was very different from Okino.

We're def going to see Okino Go Thru It as he realizes just how much his life and everything he's ever believed it was all just... programmed into his backstory. How everything about him, is just a bunch of code.

Anyway.

The ninja are down to so few lives. There's going to be no negative repercussions to this for a few more episodes. 🙃

I really hope the writers remembered that Cole used to rock climb. He'll have a better understanding than the others. Plz don't let him fall. Again. We do not need that this early in the season.

Ok, so tomorrow night, I'll be watching my sister's dogs. They've been at her mother-in-law's house this whole time, but she'd going out of town tomorrow evening. Which means, someone needs to be with them for about 10 hours. Originally, my sister and her husband were going to come back tomorrow night, but they got cheaper tickets if they booked a red eye. So, I'll be over there until very early morning Saturday. Which means, I'll be the first one to see them after their honeymoon. Took them a couple of years, but they were finally able to go.

Okay final episode thoughts that I don’t know that I can expand into real coherent thoughts so heck it we’re doing it live and cramming them together, no chronology just memory vibes, PART FOUR:

- I think part of the problem of it feeling so fast an episode, for me, is the anticipation; I waited to watch it with friends and by the time it was finally happening I had been waiting all day and it was killing me.

- That being said, the pace is breakneck, for something that starts so peacefully

- Love that we get immediate confirmation that Ed is not suited to a fisherman’s life. Though I do love the conflict inherent in Ed meaning “simple” as a compliment based on how hectic and chaotic his life has been up to this point, but of course someone who doesn’t know any of that would think he’s insulting them.

- Also very interested in the shift of Ed going to direct killing rather than trying to put a layer between it and himself; it’s the Kraken but in Protection Mode. Adore that for him. (And maybe the killing doesn’t count if they’re English Navy.)

- I had a feeling Stede was talking to Zheng about being a failure the longer the season went on. Delighted to be proven right. Was also shocked to hear she thought Auntie was dead but then had to reckon with the fact that she hasn’t analyzed a single screenshot and spotted Auntie like I did soooooo

- The simmering anger in my own gut when I saw Spanish Jackie’s overrun and the lady herself treated like that. Also OF COURSE THEY BUILD UP RESISTANCES TO IOCANE POWDER POISON IN THIS HOUSE

- (Side note but the number of ofmd fics, my own included, that have Princess Bride as a reference or element in them makes me smile)

- Calling Ricky Pinocchio. IZZY calling Ricky Pinocchio. The layers. The subtext. The intertextuality. The face-value humor. I’m salivating.

- The letter Ed reads! The way they say the words together!! If they don’t start next season with matching lover’s tattoos (or include it somewhere), I’m rioting.

- I also cry bc it has seemed to me all season that Auntie and Zheng have a dynamic similar to Izzy and Ed but less deeply toxic; I love that just because it isn’t as toxic, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t still hurt them both. Auntie choosing to listen to Olu and be softer and more open with Zheng, and Zheng returning the favor, is so important to me. Cannot emphasize enough its sweetness. Especially with Zheng thinking she’d lost Auntie.

- “It’s only a suicide plan if we die” STEDE.

- Giggling to myself at the butt shot bc 1. Of course the guy whose butt it is has a whole post about it where he’s a delight, and 2. Fandom has been begging for them to show hole all season, y’all satisfied? ;P

- Why does everyone look so hot in those uniforms though. Why is Ed putting on a tricorn hat so attractive. These are uniforms that represent imperialist cruelty, WHY IS EVERYONE HOT IN THEM

- (It’s the rebellion of it all I think)

- Awfully bold of Ricky to immediately turn on them when he’s still close enough to be shot, but I think it’s his Rich White Boy recklessness.

- Con O’Niell giving the performance of a lifetime to the very end. The subtlety of Izzy not being okay through the entire mad dash to the Revenge, culminating in him leaning on Ed AND Frenchie and the implications of that I EXPLODE

- So. Turns out my final mini theory about that bloody hand screenshot from the trailer was right; it is Izzy’s blood, and it is Jim that Ed’s hand is blocking.

- Izzy giving the apology we have been waiting for all season as a deathbed confession, HECK

- And giving voice to the fact that he loved and needed Blackbeard! And that he knew he was feeding it even though Ed had OUTGROWN it!! And giving Ed closure and release from having to be Blackbeard!!! GUUUUUHHHHH.

- I really didn’t think izzy was going to die until three days ago. Im so sad. It’s thematic and perfect and if someone had to die of course it had to be Izzy and they did him right by that death scene but I CARE MORE NOW. CHEFS KISS STORYTELLING.

- This end bit, to my memory, feels a little scattered and messy; Zheng wanting to work together to get back at Ricky…and then the ship sails off without Ed and Stede. Maybe I need to watch again but I got some whiplash there. Like yeah it’s way more important to the story that Ed and Stede get at the very least a break from piracy before the next season, more in line with the themes and character arcs, but. Idk. Felt sudden still?

- Pete and Lucius marriage ;A; “you may slash each other’s faces” ROACH PLEASE

- YES ED WE SEE YOUR ROMANTIC SIDE EYE

- FRENCHIE IS THE CAPTAIN NOW. Capitalizing on that quiet arc he’s had all season!! I love it!!! And showing that all of the Revenge crew have it in them to be leaders and the best versions of themselves when given an environment where they can. And now they have capable women aboard! Win-win!!

- I need to go dig up my post about the hollowness and toxicity of revenge in this show bc I have more examples to add to it and strengthen my theory

- Ed and Stede about to go through their Anne and Mary arc. Let’s hope they pivot faster than the other two and don’t get stuck in a rut the same way. But I love that they get to try this out together, to find new dreams and things to do together. They deserve that.

- I also respect the showrunners so much for giving us an ending that could be a decent end if Max doesn’t renew for a third. I like being able to hold my two favorite shows next to each other and see that the two extremes of ending in an uncertain place work—for GOmens, a heart-shattering cliffhanger was absolutely the right call. For OFMD, a soft ending that can be expanded on if allowed. I love them both.

- Gonna go rewatch and then rewatch the whole season and then rewatch both seasons, excuse me.

She grabs her dagger and holds it to her chest, ready for death. Then all of a sudden there’s a voice behind her “there’s a shortage of perfect breasts in the world. It would be a pity to ruin yours.” Reader gasps! It’s Din. He escaped in a Dinly fashion. They kiss and make out and make plans to run alway together. And then they do.

What was your whump awakening? Like when you really realized “ohhhhh. I like this.”

Oh boy oh boy. I don’t know that there was ever a specific moment, but a lot of things that started when I was very young. This is very long rip

I was intensely fascinated with torture scenes and concepts - you get exposed to a shocking amount of that even as a kid, bc gore is fine as long as there isn’t a hint of normal human sex involved. Don’t take my card, but I did grow up reading the HP series. The first big book I read was Prisoner of Azkaban, so there was a lot of themes of torture and captivity there.

I also was very fixated on the forms of magical torture utilized, like how Neville’s parents were tortured until they completely broke as people. I made OCs that were cursed with magical pain and torment. I’m showing my weird side fully now but I looooved Lucious Malfoy. I dug the long blond hair and the wicked cane and how mean and terrible he was.

Star Wars was a big one later on, my weirdly piqued interest in Darth Vader being a horrible boss and being referred to as “master” and “my lord”.

Even the Princess Bride Torture scene, I was scared to watch it but couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I started writing a book in middle school that was very whump, although I didn’t have that term or an understanding of that kind of genre at the time. It was an odd plot. Not worth rewriting, but it’s funny to look back. While I was writing, I felt a certain excitement I couldn’t place. The closest I guessed was that I was such an empath that writing it “hurt” me, but that I enjoyed it so much for some reason. Pain was not what that feeling in my stomach was, I guess people here call them whumperflies.

I didn’t know anything about whump until….2020? I don’t even know how I stumbled upon it, but once I started to learn about the community, it was this huge relief like, “oh I’m not the only person who likes this! Lots of people like this! I’m not crazy!”

The story of Arahant Yashodhara

Lord Gautama Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama in a region of the Indian sub-continent which is supposed to be the present day Lumbini in Nepal. He was born on the full moon day of May in the year 563 BC. His father named Suddhodana was an elected chief of the Säkya clan whose kingdom was around India-Nepal border with its capital named Kapilavatthu. His mother was Queen Mahâmâyá who was the chief consort of King Suddhodana. Following the death of Queen Mahamayã, her sister Maha Prajapati, who was also married to King Suddhodana, was made the chief consort and became the foster mother of the prince. Prince Siddhärtha enjoyed the education and the luxuries that were available to a royal prince at that time. The king made arrangements for the prince to receive all aspects of education and skills that were necessary for a king. Prince Siddhärtha, who was very bright was able to master the education as well as the skills such as martial arts and the use of arms and weapons that were needed to become a king in the future.

Within the Buddhist literature, Princess Yasodharä appears to be known by several names. In addition to Yasodharä which in Sanskrit means "Glory bearer" ("yasas" means glory and "dhara" means bearing), she was also known by other names such as Bimba, Bimbä Devi, Bhaddakaccanã, Râhula Matha and Rähula Theri. She may have been called Bimbä Devi as she is supposed to have had a beautiful golden coloured skin and similarly Bhaddakaccanã means the "Auspicious Golden One". In the Anguttara Nikaya (collection of the Buddha's numerical discourses), she is referred to as Bhaddakaccanã in relation to her foremost position in super normal powers. It has also been speculated that within the palace of King Suddhodana, she may have been called "Râhula Matha" as she was the mother of Prince Ráhula. Princess Yasodhara was born in the Koliya city of Devadaha as the daughter of King Suppabuddha and Queen Pamita. While her father was a chief of the Koliya clan, her mother belonged to the Sakya clan. In fact, Queen Pamita happened to be the sister of King Suddhodana and hence Princess Yasodhara and Prince Siddhärtha were cousins. In their region, the two families were considered as the two highest and wealthiest families and as a result there had been frequent marriages between the two families. Princess Yasodharä's brother was Devadatta who ordained as a Buddhist monk along with a few other Sakyan cousins such as Ananda, Anuruddha, Bhagu and Kimbila. Unfortunately, Venerable Devadatta became an enemy of the Buddha and tried to kill the Buddha on a few occasions. Similarly, King Suppabuddha had also developed a hatred towards the Buddha for having abandoned his daughter to become an ascetic. It is said that on one occasion while under the influence of alcohol, he had blocked the path that the Buddha was walking on the alms round and had died seven days later to be reborn in the hell. It is difficult to find any information about the princess during the period of her growing up until the occasion of her marriage to Prince Siddhartha.

When Prince Siddhartha was sixteen years old, his parents decided to look for a bride for him and as per the custom in a royal household, a celebration was arranged to invite prospective brides to be presented to the prince. Many eligible young ladies from all over the country were presented to the prince but the prince showed no interest in them and sent them away with gifts. However, when the Koliya Princess Yasodharã presented herself, she caught the prince's eye straightaway who took off the pearl neckband he wore around his neck and placed it around her neck to indicate that she was her choice to be his bride. Her father King Suppabuddha initially objected to the marriage for two possible reasons. Firstly, he knew that the wise men had predicted that the prince might one day leave the household life and become an ascetic. Secondly, he thought that the gentle prince has not had any training to be equipped with manly skills such as skills in riding, archery and warfare. However, following a tournament participated by the best sportsmen from all over the country in which the prince excelled in all the competitions that he contested, King Suppabuddha agreed to give his daughter in marriage to the prince. It is stated that when their wedding took place in the city of Kapilavatthu, the citizens participated in celebrations lasting for seven days. It is difficult to find any information about the married life of Princess Yasodharã andPrince Siddhartha. She was of course the chief consort of the prince and it is said that there were many other young ladies too who were presented to the prince by the noble Sakyan families. As a royal couple, they must have continued to enjoy the luxuries of a royal household including the three palaces called Ramya, Suramya and Subha with beautiful gardens that were built by the king for the prince to stay during the hot season, cold season and the rainy season respectively. It is evident from the Buddhist literature that the prince was not allowed by the king to have much dealings with the outside world for fear of witnessing evidence of any human suffering.

When both Prince Siddhärtha and Princess Yasodharã were 29 years old, the princess gave birth to a baby boy. At the time of the baby's birth, Prince Siddhartha was away in a garden contemplating about leaving the household life to become an ascetic to find a way out of human suffering. So, when he heard that a baby son has been born to Princess Yasodharã, he has stated that it was a fetter or an obstacle (Rahu) to his spiritual mission. It is said that when King Suddhodana had heard about Prince Siddhartha's statement about the baby being an obstacle, the baby was named "Rahula"

Following the renunciation of Prince Siddhartha, Princess Yasodhara continued to reside in the palace of King Suddhodana and brought up their son Prince Râhula. It appears that she has continued to take an interest in the developments in relation to the ascetic life of her husband. When she heard that her husband has shaved his head, and was wearing simple yellow robes and has given up using perfumes and garlands, she did likewise. When she heard that he was having only one meal a day and was sleeping on a low, hard bed, she too had only one meal a day and slept on a low, hard bed. When her own family and other relatives offered to maintain her, she refused their offers and when several eligible princes offered to marry her, she rejected their proposals.

Around one year later the Buddha's enlightenment, King Suddhodana heard that his son whom he has not seen for seven years, has become the Buddha and was residing in the Bamboo Grove monastery in Rajagaha. He wished to see his son and sent numerous delegations with an invitation to visit the king in Kapilavatthu. However, nine of the delegations had become Buddhist monks after listening to the Buddha's teaching and had not conveyed the invitations from the king. Finally, the king sent a delegation led by a minister called Kaludayi, who was a childhood friend of Gautama Buddha. He also became an Arahant and ordained as a monk after listening to the Buddha's teaching. But unlike the others, he conveyed the message to the Buddha, and persuaded Him to visit His aged royal father.

When the Buddha visited Kapilavatthu, the members of the Royal family and other Sakya relatives visited the Buddha and listened to dhamma. Next day when Yasodharã looked out through the window, she saw the Buddha walking in the streets of Kapilavatthu. She wanted to show and describe the qualities of the Buddha to Prince Rahula who has never seen his father. While showing the Buddha, his father, to Prince Râhula from the balcony of the palace, Princess Yasodharã uttered the verses contained in the Lion of Men verses. In the collection of the verses, she has described mostly the noble physical characteristics of the Buddha along with the serenity and purity of the Buddha's mental qualities. All the ladies of the palace went to see the Buddha but, Princess Yasodharã remained in her chamber. She thought to herself that if she had any virtues at all, the Buddha will visit her. The Buddha asked the king where she was and when the king said she was in her chambers, the Buddha visited the princess in her chambers. As soon as the Buddha arrived, Princess Yasodharà rushed to the Buddha and fell to the floor. She held the Buddha's ankles, placed her head on the feet and kept crying until the Buddha's feet were wet with her tears. The Buddha had asked others to let her cry as much as she needed to and not stop her. Then King Suddhodana informed the Buddha how virtuous his daughter in law has been, staying loyal to her husband and how she emulated the life style of her husband as an ascetic during the six years of the Buddha's struggle to gain enlightenment. The Buddha acknowledged her virtues and devotion to Him not only in this life but in previous lives too. The Buddha informed her about the great merits that she has accumulated from their former lives together, and that her devotion, purity and support was invaluable to him as a Buddha aspirant (Bodhisatva).

Writing, working 60 hours a week, rewatching Castle for...reasons. But anyway I'm back with a whole 21 hours to spare before the story ends, so let's get at it.

-- you can literally see Beard take a deep breath not to lose his temper with Ted about Sheffield Wednesday (on Saturday) and it makes me wonder what it looks like if he ever did lose his temper with Ted

-- also. why did Nate suggest piles? Is that really his first thought when somebody's acting up?

-- Higgins' backstory is so adorable and normal compared to everyone else, its cute. I also love that he's basically the straight man to all their insane drama.

-- The first of Nate's grey hairs start appearing in the same episode that Ted laughs when Nate calls himself a Big Dog. I love these hair stylists and also I Am Unwell. (there was an interview about this, it was intentional that as Nate's hatred grows so does his grey hairs. Unwell, I told you)

-- the doner kebab man at Roy's self-proclaimed church dropping the knowledge of 'just bc you're good at it doesn't mean youre meant to do it'..... poetry

-- Ted crossing himself before leaving... that man is a Southern Baptist if I've ever seen one

-- Roy is a dramatic little bitch, waiting in the dark in all black like that. Some fanfiction writer has got to get on with capitalizing on that

-- Nate hard-parted his hair for this dinner that's adorable. He definitely doesn't have enough hair to make a difference but the effort is there. Also, where are his sisters during this?

-- Roy dated Gina Gershon. Mind you, she's significantly older than him.

-- the older couple in the crowd telling the story of how they fell in love is nearly exactly the story we hear about Rupert and Rebecca in s3. interesting.

-- HOw is sam texting on bantr in the minutes leading up to a match? shouldnt he be strategising or warming up or something??

-- the whole final bit being framed exactly like a rom com is such a fucking masterstroke

-- you know people have been saying Roy becoming more like Ted is leading up to something in the finale but lets be real he's been doing it the whole time. The jerry maguire callback, anyone?

i feel like every time the nagus shows up im going to have to re-remember hes the one guy from the princess bride. in my defence have not SEEN that movie still but by reputation i am aware of the man.

okay so i have, for lack of word, clocked that that specific ferengi is being played by a female actress, so thats. hm. whats going on here. ah i see thats a plot point, i promise i noticed that before the scene where she returned to her room.

okay so dax genuinely is just like 'yea theyre shitheads but theyre funny' incredible? incredible.

we love a lady knight scenario, dont we folks. love a good ol' fashioned uhhhhhh alanna situation. yknow i always use alanna as my go to reference for a 'woman pretends to be a man' fiction and ive literally never read it or known anyone who has. niche, i guess.

so this is all the start of the ongoing ferengi women plotline, iirc. i know quarks mother (mothers?) shows up in later plots about ferengi politics, but i didnt realise we were gonna jump in with it. neat!

is dax's job now just advising other women on their romantic situations. its what she was doing in melora. like thats two eps in a row her primary role seems to be 'provide advice to a woman in love' whats the go.

i dont like the nagus but at least in universe i think thats the position of the majority of the people around him

now my thing is i dont actually like 'pretends to be a man' plots bc, yknow, ~transgender~, its a vibes based situation. anyway i skipped the scene but ive got the transcript, ive got the gist. im good. it seems fun. that said the way quark physically reacted to being kissed, and how hes reacting in every dialogue line afterwards, is uh. very dramatic? not sure where this is gonna go bc the signs point to Poorly for the both of them

but also "dont you want to know why i kissed you?" is the sort of shit i would say if i was trying to come out worse than i actually had. like "dont you want to know why i started shortening my name" level shit.

this romance is doing Nothing for me lads

that said like, quark is still quite compelling as part of it. and the fact he defends Pel is sweet. but i also find it so difficult to take ferengi drama seriously because like, the nagus is RIGHT THERE, and he's a pure comic character. its pure comic. and that just sorta sucks drama out of it for me. whereas i think quark has the right balance of comedic greed and genuine pathos that he can carry dramatic story lines. pel isnt quiiite working for me in that respect but i already flagged my lack of interest in this specific kind of plotline earlier so its not her fault.

dax just vibing in the background of most of this episode was kinda fun though. i do like that.

okay so my verdict - ? two romance episodes back to back kinda sucks for me since i didnt really feel invested in either romance as a thing in itself, though maybe part of that is the foreknowledge that neither go anywhere, right. as an episode on its own i think its alright, but will probably be better as part of the overarching Ferengi plotlines later, i guess? idk. its not quite my thing. i did enjoy dax here though so she's starting to win me over after a rocky start

🛒 - oof i always reference some media,, usually something like pride & prejudice or the princess bride !! or the jaws cup in the dabi fic <//3 i also always reference something related to nature (the sea, animals, the stars) bc i'm a science girly. i also write alot meet cutes but i think overall i just write alot of tenderness, nearly everything i write feels overly fluffy and domestic (i hope at least ajkdjks) and a lil banter <33

Saw #mrsaturdaynight yesterday afternoon. There were very few people who were near my age it felt strange as I observed that nearly the whole audience were old, white people like my mom. The show was a little too long, the songs weren’t memorable but the jokes and laughs were genuine and good but bc I’m younger I only understood half the jokes & references. Also the show help me realize to appreciate #billycrystal I never took a closer look at his acting abilities, from this show alone I can tell he’s a fantastic actor.
