Who Builds Theseus' Ship?
This ties in to a greater discussion about Larian's changes to the game post-Full Release, and whether you consider those changes to be a good thing or a bad thing. Personally speaking, the quality-of-life and gameplay mechanics improvements were appreciated, while the direct changes to characters and especially characterization were not so much.
In such discussions, I often see people downplaying the actual changes to characterization that have been made thus far as "minor" things, but I often see one of the most glaring examples of a characterization change left out, because so many people aren't even aware of it ever happening:
Halsin.
For those who don't know, if you were romancing Halsin at the time of the original full release, and for almost four months afterward, if you took him with you to Act 3's orgy scene in Sharess's Caress, he would open up about a situation in his distant past. He would tell you about how he had briefly been "something between guest, prisoner, and consort" in a drow House, and been kept there for three years before escaping.
He stated that this was something that happened "a long time ago", when he was "a foolhardy young druid", which would mean it would likely have been between ages 100 and 245 — or at minimum 105 years ago, and at (likely) maximum 250 years ago. He closed the discussion with a line that really struck me, and that gave me such an appreciation for his character, and for the writers who had created it:
The passage of time has a strange way of polishing even the most arduous of memories into precious keepsakes.
As someone in their late-20s, with a number of traumatic events in my past, this resonated so much both with my experience of those events – once harrowing and haunting, now just simple happenings that do not affect me the way they once did – and as an inspirational message, that hurt would not necessarily linger forever.
Not only that, I really valued the insight it gave into Halsin's personality, further showing him to be someone who was deeply complex and meditative, always looking for meaning and something to take away or learn from any experience. It also served to showcase the likely reality of the relationship elves and druids both would have to the concepts of time and memory. (Another example of this is the experience of Shadowheart's father compared to her mother at the hands of the Sharrans.)
I started playing the game almost immediately upon its release in August, and was intrigued by Halsin from the start. He was someone who was kind and heartfelt, but also very settled in himself and with a simultaneously rigid and very flexible moral code. It was that complexity that drew me to him, and I appreciated the inclusion of a character distinct from the Origin companions, all at close to the lowest point of their lives.
It was to my surprise to find that this appreciation for his character and perspective on his Act 3 revelation was not unanimous. As it turned out, there was a vocal group of people claiming that this writing was problematic, and that Halsin clearly didn't even realize he was actually traumatized, and that Larian needed to fix it. Not everyone joining in with this crusade had even played the game.
And, ultimately, in a pattern they have continued to follow, Larian responded. They fixed it. At the end of November, as part of Patch 5, they uploaded an edited version of the scene with new dialogue, where the player could express this "reality" to Halsin, in one of the most gallingly patronizing statements I've ever seen.
Sounds traumatic. You may need to reflect on that.
(If someone said this to me after I had opened up to them about my trauma and my experience of it to them, we would not be maintaining a cordial relationship afterward.)
Halsin's new response to these dialogue options is a cringing, self-deprecating cascade of how the player is of course right, and he should have known better, and time could "prove to be a trickster on one's recollections" and that perhaps he had "lost perspective".
Quite frankly, it is a completely different character answering, and an almost directly opposing overall message about the role of time in healing, and the path forward when it comes to trauma. No more "one day these events will not hurt to recall the way they do now". In its stead: "only healing that looks a specific way and follows a specific path is acceptable - anything else and you are simply a poor fool lying to yourself."
The following quote is from a comment left on a video of Halsin's original dialogue in that scene, before the changes, and is just one example of how much that representation meant to more than just me to see:
That said, Halsin is trauma recovery goals for me absolutely. Being able to remember without actually being triggered? Being able to fully and freely engage HOW ID LIKE TO instead of being fettered by trauma responses? Goals. I don’t know if I’ll ever get there 100%, we don’t get elven lifetimes irl, but his level of healing brings me hope.
Ultimately, this post is not meant to argue that you should agree with me that one is better than the other. More so, I want to highlight that this existed — for many people, this was their experience of events and characters, and that is not so easily redacted. And I also want to just state, for the record, that Larian's way of approaching narrative and characterization changes to their full-release game has been incredibly frustrating. I did not agree, in August, to play an Early Access game with the inherent understanding that any potential narrative aspect might change at any time. I purchased a full-release game, and immersed myself in the story and the characters, to get to know them as the writers had originally presented.
And when Larian makes these changes based on fan feedback, they are explicitly making decisions about which fans matter, and specifically, which fans matter most. Rather than allowing everyone to experience the story they decided to tell, and draw from it what they take away, and let that spark discussion and engagement, they made the decision to defer to some fans over others, and prioritize their experience of the narrative — something that, no matter how well-intended, is always going to leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

I watched both parts of Lucas documentary and am so heartbroken. This incident has changed him so much, he's unrecognizable and in not the best way. This incident has killed his spirit and light you can tell he went through major depression and struggles mentally still. His self confidence has disappeared, he can't hold eye contact anymore. He's probably never going to be the same again. It's like night and day.
Can you please elaborate in just the part where Lucas exposed these crazy fans? I've followed the incident since day one but faded off so don't know how he exposed them at some point. Some people are saying that is the apology he is giving rather then admitting the rumours so It'd be great for that elaboration if not quick summary. I missed out on that time frame and would be so proud if he tried to expose the crazy stalkers. They're fkin insane, it's repulsive behavior.
Lucas (even by his own admission) had always been rather rude and aggressive with sasaengs (as he should!). A few days before the scandal broke out, he actually posted a pic on bubble of flymetothemoon (there's a 0 instead of an o there somewhere, but I can never remember where... sorry).
Anyway, after that that's when the rumors started. Originally just that he was a gold digger and cheated. SM did what they always do and made him give a vague apology. The day after, another accuser came out saying he allegedly also gaslight his gf's, I don't believe it was ever clarified how or about what he supposedly gaslight them. (Then a dude also came and accused him of dating and cheating).
After that, the dude's account disappeared (right after he said it wasn't true), and after awhile one of the accounts was sold and another turned out to have been a marketing account all along.
And now we're here.
A few hours/a day before the doc dropped, Lucas opened new official social media accounts (for his work as solo artist supposedly), and flymetothem0on was seen on weibo saying things that very clearly gave off the impression that she was directly involved in the scandal.
She is a known NCT sasaeng. Started stalking Mark when he was like 15 (still an SM rookie), has been known to stalk Yangyang, and just recently has began to stalk a member of NCT Wish, who is also a minor. So yeah....
And about what Lucas looks like, he went through a lot, including depression and suicidal thoughts, it's understandable that the experience has changed him. But it seems like his family and friends have his back and as his fans we should try to as well!
Sasaengs have way too much power in the K-pop industry. It's about time people started standing up to those disgusting excuses for people!!

That person you and Rani were arguing with about phantom limbs apparently got called out a few days ago for having zootherians in their pack
I saw a post about this; namely, because the associated Therian Amino call-out used my Beware as a main citation for talking about the known bestialist LycanTheory.
I haven't reblogged or commented anything regarding it because, in all honesty, the evidence as I've seen so far has not been substantial enough for me to feel confident in commenting and saying anything one way or another. All I've seen is a single video on it (x) which was incredibly difficult to parse or understand with my audio processing disorder and the filter the therian chose to use: the video cited the Therian Amino post I mentioned earlier (x), which offered no proof to its claims regarding Thorn nor its claims regarding PinkDolphin, and a highlight reel on Instagram (x), which is also very nearly fucking impossible to navigate and once again has claims that are very difficult to prove on the basis of a single messily-edited screenshot that stay up on the screen for just a few seconds.
So... let me look into this more and give an informative summary for the people just now hearing about this before I give any sort of real, proper response.
I'll give you the TL;DR now: The accusations leveled at Thorn from Therian Territory regarding this claim seem to be false.
The claims that I'll be focusing on here are that Thorn is an active part of the Evergreen Unakite Pack (EUP), which also supposedly contains the founder of the BITE Discord, Dayn, and his partner, Autumn. The BITE Discord is a bestialist-friendly Discord which masquerades as a safe space for paraphiles; some of you may remember LycanTheory, the predator who sexually assaulted his pets and who has sexually interacted with minors via texts and videos, and his bestialist partner Jade who was a long-time member and moderator on the server.
Thorn of Therian Territory has made a response video (x). Thorn states that there is no association between themself and LycanTheory, pointing out that the original call-out also doesn't showcase any proof for that claim either; much the opposite, they've had some really nasty experiences with LycanTheory. Thorn claims to not have known that Autumn and Dayn were zoophiles, as they did not actively identify as zoophiles at the time of them being in a formal pack together and it fell apart soon after. When Jade entered the friend group, zoophilia more generally became a topic and things fell apart due to Thorn's discomfort. Thorn outright says they do not support zoophilia.
I went digging and looked into the EUP's first pack meetup (x). There is an Autumn at the meetup, who identifies as a black wolf and a zebra; the screenshot displayed of Autumn333333 from Twitter claims to be a zeta with a zebra and husky theriotype. There is no one at the meetup who identifies as an ANCD wolfdog, Dayn's theriotype as displayed in the screenshot of vilewolfxD from Twitter.
The Twitter account Autumn333333 joined Twitter in December 2021; the Twitter account vilewolfxD didn't join until October 2022. The EUP first howl meetup was posted on August 16th, 2021, and was likely taken earlier than that. This seems to support Thorn's claim that Autumn and Dayn were not public about being a part of the Zeta community until after the pack had already disbanded. Thorn also supplies a screenshot of what is supposedly the first time Autumn333333 liked a post on Twitter from someone in the Zeta community, dated April 16th, 2022. I'm not really dedicated enough to scroll all the way back and check myself, but if it's accurate then that also supports their claim. Autumn333333's Twitter is empty outside of likes, but searching for "Thorn" and "Therian Territory" and "Evergreen" on vilewolfxD didn't garner any results for my Twitter.
So, ultimately... these accusations of Thorn being a part of a pack with Zetas seem to be false, and based entirely on a single YouTuber, intentionally or accidentally, misrepresenting a timeline in order to make someone seem significantly worse than they actually are.

Re: this post about changes made to the text in some editions of Monstrous Regiment, I've just checked and the edition in my room is the 2004 Corgi paperback (I forgot I had hardback and paperback and since my first edition Doubleday hardback is downstairs somewhere, I cba going to look for it when I had another version with the original text to hand to refer to) and, yep, Mal is just "in full uniform" in the last scene, not full "female" uniform. I had vaguely remembered that maybe Mal had been wearing the bustle uniform and was uncomfortable about it, but that was a false memory.
The name Maladicta, as opposed to Mal or Maladict, and she/her pronouns are used in the narration in this scene, but I don't think that's definitively saying Mal has embraced identifying as a woman/is not trans or questioning?
Given that the narration in the scene revealing Jackrum's backstory goes from using he to she and back to he for Jackrum, this could just indicate that Polly going off her last data point, i.e. Mal saying "I'm actually Maladicta. There! I've told someone!" and talking about how the whole underwired nightgowns and bathing in virgin's blood routine, per the vampiric gender roles they were expected to abide by, was not something that was attractive and that you were taken more seriously as a male vampire. It's not "Mal is definitively a woman" it's "I am going off my most recent intel and the best guess I can extrapolate from that about what is respectful and accurately reflects this person's gender identity and how they wish to be referred to."
Similarly, in Jackrum's scene where Polly approaches him about how he joined the army, he talks about becoming a "Chosen Man" i.e. what the Borogravian armies called corporals at the time within three months, and that he'd "smiled at" the terminology with regards himself, which sounds a hell of a lot like "it was a fun coincidence that my rank and how I thought of my gender aligned like that" to me. "Chosen man" does not (again, to me) imply "ersatz man/woman assuming a male persona" nearly as strongly, if it could be said to imply that at all, and that reading feels (TO ME) like the one that should be considered a reach, as opposed the more straightforward interpretation that he chose to be a man.
Thinking about trans people's gender in that way is not necessarily how contemporary trans discourse frames things, because "born this way" and "always a [current identity]" has superceded the idea to push back against the idea that you have to earn a gender identity through transitioning. But a significant minority of trans people do feel that they chose their gender or that they were the gender they were assigned at birth at one point even though they aren't anymore, and that kind of framing would have been more common in the mainstream at the time the book was written.
Jackrum also says to Polly, cagily, that no one would believe her when she approaches him and implies that She Knows and wants to talk about it, presumably because he thinks she means to out or blackmail him, and she replies "You're right. No one would believe me. I'd believe you though" which like? That is not "I'd believe you if you said you were a woman." That's 1000% "I will believe you if you tell me that you are a man, even knowing that you are not a cisgender man. I want to know how you want me to think of you."
Which, as a sentiment, is reinforced when she clocks* her new recruits at the end as AFAB and tells them they can join as men if they want to, but it's their choice and that they are her little lads, or not as the case may be, and she will look after them (emphasis directly from the text). Which, again, that's "I will look after you whoever that is, and I don't get to tell you who you are."
Finally:
"Upon your oath, you are not a dishonest man," said Polly. "Good one, Sarge. You told people every day."
That's not definitively "I see what you did there: you thumbed your nose at them by covertly saying that you're a dishonest woman." It could also be "I see what you did there: you thumbed your nose at them by covertly asserting that your identity as a man was not a lie."
Sergeant Jackrum is not a woman, Mal's gender is not firmly canonised in any particular way, Polly Perks is not a bioessentialist, and I will not stand for this fucking libel of my Blorbos, Harper Collins!
*Like, again, there probably wouldn't be as much clocking and outing people (or, indeed, blackmailing people by threatening to out them) framed in a sympathetic light in a book published now that intended to be trans affirming, but this was written over 20 years ago, and, in terms of fantasy written by cis male authors, it is a lot more trans affirming than most of its contemporaries.

saw the "holy shit two cakes" post now im posting these :>
anyway I am a huge fan of the anime franchise precure and hermitcraft, and there's a popular precure dress up game, and I figured why not and started making all the hermits as magical girls (mostly based on their skins because I don't watch everyone) and gave them all cure names :>
So here's Gem! (I did her season 9 skin first because I started making these back when I first got into Gem's videos and didn't realize she had a different skin whoops)

to start! Gem's cure names are Cure Slay and Cure Fawn!
The game is obviously pretty limited with what you can do, however the final screen lets you customize so much, so she has a custom back bow! On her mc skin, her shoes have the bi flag, but obviously I couldn't put the flag on her shoes so the bow gets it instead! the purple got kinda lost, but I promise you it's there. She also has the sunflower choker because she has a sunflower in her hair and I thought it would be fun. Other than that, everything's pretty true to her skin
For Cure Fawn, I'm gonna be honest she was the first one I made way back in September, so I don't fully remember my thoughts on her. I really like how she turned out, though! Also, side note, the picture above is actually a slightly edited version of the original (which I've posted below) because I didn't like the way the pointed ears ended up looking. I also got rid of the little pompoms on the shoes (they're Cure Whip's boots)
as you can see there's a line between where the character model's ears stop and the bows I used to make the pointed bit starts and that bothered me, so I just made the minor edit. (and of course the pompoms, I probably would've kept them if I could've made them white, but the game didn't allow for that)
I've done more than just Gem, of course but I'll give them their own posts. I'll probably end up scheduling them and posting 1 a day til I catch up to who I've made so far. (I'm just doing a wheel spinner to pick who to do next lol)

Hi! I'm May! And let me just say, I was not expecting this, but it's happened.
I saw your lighthouse au and was inspired.
I started writing something I thought was gonna be a short story that went nowhere and I wouldn't feel the need to post it.
I ended up with a whole long thing with a plot and a villain or two and a close to death sequence and chapters and I'm honestly shocked I finished it because I don't normally finish things this quickly, if at all.
It took me exactly 8 days to write because I was hyper fixated, though it would have been a couple days shorter if I didn't get sick and have flu brain and couldn't think to write. I've had my brain back literally a day and it got done.
Before you get any ideas of how it might go, it's about the 2003 boys, (because they're my favorite boys), it's not a romance, the new lighthouse keeper is my OC-turned-brand new character because my OC didn't fit the story I ended up creating as the story evolved, and it involves guns. It's pretty much not your story and is only loosely inspired, but it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for you.
Don't worry, the guns aren't a major part until the climax. It does have kind of a message thing going about guns so if you do end up wanting to read it I'm sorry if it sounds preachy I really wasn't trying to make it that way but I've re-read it and it might sound that way. I'll try to fix it in the editing if it doesn't impact the story in any way. This is still a TMNT thing, so no one dies and the guns aren't the point of the story, they're just a minor driving force for certain interactions. I tend to write more serious bad-people-doing-bad-things-to-good-people type stuff so it all just happened naturally. Had to remind myself this is tmnt and it probably shouldn't get that serious and hold myself back.
Since it was inspired by you, I wanted to ask if it was ok if I post it on my writing blog and AO3. It's completely fine if you don't want that, and if you don't, I won't post it. But if you are ok with it, just know it's not gonna be out like tomorrow or anything. It's finished, but it still needs some heavy editing. And I will, of course, credit you with the original idea I was inspired by. Since it came from you, I would prefer to have your approval before making it a public thing.
I love your art and I thank you kindly for inspiring me to write this. Even if you don't want me posting it, it was fun to write and I and my friends can still enjoy it privately. You're awesome and I love your au and the premise behind it and everything. It's really creative and super freaking cool!
Oof sorry for not answering this earlier! Yeah you can post it lol, I don't own lighthouses and it's not like you're just doing a carbon copy of what I've made just in writing form lol (even if you were I'd still give it a thumbs up bc imitation is the sincerest form of flattery 👍)

Hi! I'm sorry to bother you, but I've been reading your meta posts about Izanami and Souzai Daigaku and the like and you mention the game script often, do you have a link to the dump or to a big doc containing it? I only saw your Izanami one and it's fascinating, I'd really like to see more! I try to take screenshots of things like minor NPC dialogue but I miss a lot of stuff.

If you're not already familiar, ShrineFox has been a mod dev in the Persona scene for a while, right now though they're working on a lot of other projects too hehe. They had this "text search" app for a while where you could find text from entire script dumps of a game they had on hand, mostly the Persona games. Right now, the app's taken down, but the whole dumps have been uploaded in this Google Drive!
The _msg files are the ones you're looking for for the text n stuff. The _flow files are for the backend behavior coding and all that. These txt files are really big too, so try opening it with a source code editor like Notepad++ or Sublime Text because it might blow up a normal writer app like Word or Writer LMAO (188K LINES??)

Rusalem by AnnetStore
Welcome to the inaugural World Overview Wednesday, wherein I have a look at some of the nice, mostly old, and perhaps obscure worlds I have tucked away in a massive archive of them. My purpose is to give these worlds a little love, to give as much info about them as I can, and to give you a link to them, both to the original upload if it still works and to a re-upload in case the original vanishes into the ether. That way, you can download them if you want to. I have almost 900 worlds in said archive, so we could be here for the next 17 years. Literally. I did the math.
Anyway! My first victim is Rusalem by AnnetStore. I really like this world, though I've never played in it. Think "Jerusalem" without the "Je," and it really does look a lot like that part of the world. I mean, look at that thing! It's beautiful in its stark desert-ness. It's a big world, beautifully terrain-painted, decorated with a nod toward authenticity with date palms, olive, and cypress trees, fully built/furnished, has a distant terrain, and it's populated. It is what I think Al Simhara should have been, except that it'd need pyramids for that, I guess.
This world was uploaded to the Exchange in December of 2011, and you can download it here, in case you missed that the title of this post is also a link. :) And if you do not wish to deal with the Exchange and/or sims3packs and you don't feel like converting it yourself, I have also uploaded the .world file I made here. You just plop that in your install files in the folder at GameData > Shared > NonPackaged > Worlds. No need to screw around with the launcher.
But before you do all that...more pics and info behind the cut.
Aside from the fact that it's 2048x2048 and comes with 45 residents (which I'm assuming is correct; I certainly didn't count them), there is zero info about this world. That said, I am pretty certain that it needs all of the EPs that had been released when this world was made, which means up to Pets. I noticed objects from all of the EPs up to Generations, and the world does generate minor pets, which I think means that it needs Pets, too, but I'm not sure about that. I take pics of these worlds in a save that has no store content installed, and I have only the High End Loft stuff pack, and I didn't notice anything missing on any of the lots, so I think it only needs the EP stuff. It neither comes with nor requires CC.
This world has basement rabbitholes on all of the rabbithole lots. Of course you can edit them and use rugs instead if you don't like the basement rabbitholes thing.
The world has all spawners (other than the Island Paradise and Into the Future ones, of course), and they are placed in a well-distributed way throughout the world.
Older worlds sometimes have weird issues because, for instance, EA breaks shit with patches. While taking pics of this world, it ran for five simdays. During that time, I sent my sim all over the place and the pre-made population was running around, too. I noticed no weird issues (like sims walking on water), had no notifications about stuck sims (except for a wild horse once, but they always get stuck), and generally saw no issues or lag. So, I think this one's OK in an up-to-date game.
Now let's take a look at the lots and stuff.
This is the main area of the world. It's up on a rise, and it's where the majority of the rabbitholes are as well as a good number of residential lots, many of which are unoccupied so you can move in plenty of your own sims even if you keep the pre-made population. Here's the Edit Town view, so you can see what's what with that:
Now let's take a look at some of these individual lots. Can't look at all of them because we'd be here until next Wednesday, but some of them.
This is the science lot. The building is mostly empty, but it does have an inventing station, and though you can't see them in the pic there are also scrap piles to collect scrap from on the lot. If you've got an inventor sim, this is where they'll need to go to get scrap if you don't want them to buy it because there isn't a dedicated junkyard in the world. There are also harvestables on the lot so that science-career sims can work on their Gardening skill before or after work, if they don't have a home garden. I would add the science objects from University Life, too, because of course that EP didn't exist when this world was created.
This is the city hall, which is quite fancy outside but almost entirely empty inside. So, there's three stories of space to add stuff, if you want to.
This is the fire station, which is nice but, oddly, doesn't come with a fire truck, so you'll need to add one. Or two, since there's two parking spaces of appropriate size.
This is the ziggurat-like library, and this...
...is part of the town's big park (and there are numerous smaller ones scattered throughout the world). It is not a seasonal festival lot because Seasons didn't yet exist when this world was made, but it would be easy to make it so, if you wanted to. You can also see the lot at one end of this park, which is set up as a wedding venue, with the arch and guest seating on the rooftop and a buffet table, bars, and tables/chairs inside the building.
This is the house where I placed the sim that I move into these worlds when I'm taking pics of them:
I have to say, the residential lots in this world are quite cute and match the theme very well. They are also all different, ranging in size from small starters, to moderate family homes, to expensive villas, to one honest-to-pie palace. They are all fully, albeit usually basically, furnished. Here's the furnishing in one of the starter-priced homes, which is suitable for a family of four:

It's occupied by one of the pre-made families, but if you want to have your sims live in it, just annihilate/evict them. :)

Most of them have their own little park/playground for the kids, and the one that's fairly far from "downtown" has its own grocery store and diner.

Many of the homes in the world have outdoor living spaces, both covered patios as well as rooftop space. This particular house has both.
Now, about the pre-made population...Ehhhhh, I don't think they fit very well for the theme. Here are two of them:
Me, I'd nuke them and make my own families that would fit the theme better. But, I guess that's up to the player
The only other thing that might be a problem with this world is that the creator of it is Russian, so unless your game is also in Russian, you'll have a lot of dialogues and lot names/addresses/descriptions and such that look like this:
It's easy to change sims' names with Master Controller, but I don't think it's possible to change lot addresses. So, there's that. But, it's pretty easy to figure out what's what.

Your blog has inspired me to do something similar with the languages I know 😭 how do you decide what kinds of videos to translate/post?
I know I've answered this before but I don't really feel like looking for the old answer so...
As I've made translations on this blog more of a regular commitment, there are some things that have changed about how I choose videos. Although the main driving force continues to simply be my own sense of humor/taste, I will also take into account more of
(1) what other people might like to see (culturally, topically, etc);
After running this blog for like a year and a half almost, I have a bit more of an idea of what kind of videos/topics do particularly well with the people who seem to regularly watch my translations. Obviously my niche, if you could call it that, is more of funny/silly douyins, but I also like to include some educational type videos to translate as well. I'll often go for any lesser known cultural tidbits (festivals, histories, traditions, arts, etc) that I think would be worth sharing. Chinese folk music translations and stuff about ethnic minorities that might be difficult to come across organically on the English web are also videos I will give more consideration.
(2) what I would want other people to see/what I think other people would enjoy seeing;
This is sort of similar to the first thing, but now that this whole blog has turned into a thing that has an audience, at times I feel compelled to consider what would not be of that much interest to people. Of course, it's my right and delight to force some special interests upon you all at 2am, but while I mostly translate douyins that I do like, there are also some videos that I like that I do not translate. I don't need to post every funny cat video I come across, for example (tempting though it may be). Additionally, I don't post that many vlog-type douyins or cooking how-tos or people talking about pop culture (potentially too niche) or clothes or just whatever. Some of this selection/editing feeds into the final main factor:
(3) what I would be motivated and capable of translating;
There are some videos/creators that I watch tons of content from but never translate and have never reposted here. It could be because it's a rabbit hole that couldn't be accurately captured with just a few videos, or because their videos are too long, or because maybe there's too many notes/context that I would have to give, or maybe because, again, the videos aren't even that interesting to begin with and I'm just watching them for some very specific reason.
At the end the day, though, this blog and translating videos is just a hobby. If you want to do it, you should also think of it as a hobby.
The earliest douyins I translated were pretty random, and I used to translate videos and send them directly to a group discord. Then I started posting them on tumblr, I think, because at some point I felt that I was translating too much and my frequent posts were coming across as annoying and irrelevant to the discord (or something like that—I don't really remember anymore).
I think if you just want to start out translating, picking videos you like and would want to translate to show a friend who doesn't speak the language is the way to begin choosing. Or maybe, choose videos you WOULD want to share with others who know the language. There are a lot of douyins I choose to translate secondarily because my primary intention is to share the original video with my Chinese followers :)

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episode 110 Subbed (Finalized)

TURN-110: Tyranno Kenzan VS Fossil Dragon Jim
Jim Crocodile has noticed an outbreak of strong electromagnetic waves at the Duel Academia. Accompanied by Judai, Johan, Shou, and Kenzan, Jim decides to investigate in the jungle. As they do, some strong electromagnetic waves spring up, causing his crocodile Karen to pounce on Kenzan--and at the same time, the effects of the electromagnetic waves cause Kenzan to forget who he is and pounce on Jim.* This leads to Jim having a duel with Kenzan, and as Kenzan instinctively summons his powerful Dinosaur Monsters, Jim activates his Kaseki Yuugou -- Fossil Fusion Magic Card to summon his Fossil Dragons.
*Worth noting that the pre-airing summary text here makes it sound like Karen biting Kenzan and Kenzan lunging for Jim both happened as they're looking around in the jungle, when in the episode proper, Karen biting Kenzan is what gets Jim onto the scene; wonder if that was the original idea in production...

Well, mates, episode 110 is now up and finalized! With Season 3 starting off with a couple of two-parters, I figured I'd take a slight breather and work on just 110 this go-round given the multiple two-parters on the way. And it's a good one, as we're introduced more to Jim Crocodile Cook (and his well-done Australian accent in the dub, for some kudos there to 4Kids [some dialogue choices for him (and Kenzan [that's not how Tail Swing works???]) aside]) while also seeing how quickly Judai seems to have recovered after his duel with O'Brien, and we see the debut of Jim's Fossils, which would go on to take a good 18 years or so before finally being printed with some buffs to them; it was always an archetype I liked. Kenzan also just spending a good 3-4 minutes growling was A+ (a shame the dub just made him talk semi-primitively, even if it mostly works), more of Jim's Engrish was just as good, and I liked how Jim and Kenzan came away with some respect for each other by the end after how offended Kenzan was by the Fossil Fusion concept. Fun times!
Animation error-wise, like with 108-109, I mostly did some quality-of-watching touch-ups around split-screens (with some of the fixes I did also allowing me to get rid of some of the ghosting in the footage), though there two card fixes I applied with Kenzan. Details below under the cut as always for the interested!
Quick housekeeping: in case you missed it, I re-released my finalized episode 1 work, as I went back and applied various card fixes that were bugging me and that I've grown to be able to fix, lol. Still shook I first started finalizing everything in 2014... 💀 Currently, I don't anticipate going back to re-finalize anything pre-84, mostly due to the annoyance of cutting/splicing stuff to get around not having the original unreleased scripts I'd keep with the ATK/DEF counter subs and whatnot thanks to a 2022 data drive failure, and hopefully it stays that way. 😅 I also applied a few minor styling fixes to the ending credit subs for 105 and 108 (noticed the text for a few names in the cast lists were scaled inconsistently) and reuploaded those; rereleased episode 1 has been posted on NAC, while re-finalized 105 and 108 will be posted there with 110.
Anywho, enjoy! I'll likely be going back to some TFSP stuff for a bit (in case you missed that news~) and then I'll dip into episodes 111-112 and Manjoume VS Amon; stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits!
As Jim first activates Fossil Fusion, we see the card first before he fades in holding it, but his thumb is missing as his fade-in starts, and then it just appears, fully faded-in, in the next frame even though the rest of him is still fading in. I fixed this in Sony Vegas by masking out his thumb and adding it to the first frame in which Jim starts fading in, then making his thumb fade in with the rest of him.
Later, as Kenzan thinks Dark Driceratops bested Jim's Skullgar, Skullgar turns around and defeats it, causing Kenzan some damage; as he reacts while his LP drop, Jim slides in on a split-screen exclaiming "Bravo!", but his split-screen slide-in starts with his split already about 50% into the shot. After that, Jim sets one card face-down and ends his turn, and as Kenzan opens his eyes and starts to growl while the split-screen ends, Jim's split starts to slide out the frame after Kenzan starts to move. Fixed the first in Sony Vegas by re-doing his slide-in to be more natural and start closer to the edge of the screen, then fixed the second by just removing the one frame where Kenzan has moved but Jim hasn't so that they move simultaneously, holding a frame once the split-screen's over a frame longer to compensate.
As #2 here leads into Kenzan taking offense at how Jim woke his dinosaur out of its sleep to use as a piece for Jim's fossil "freak," he says he'll make Jim pay for that as their match gets going for real; Judai and co look on as Jim and Kenzan stare each other down on a split-screen leading to the eyecatch (the split-screen here cut from the dub, likely for time), but Jim's split slides in unevenly compared to Kenzan's. Fixed in Vegas by redoing his split's slide-in so they both slide in evenly.
Later, after Jim uses Dowsing Burn to take out Sabersaurus, Kenzan reacts as Jim slides in on a split-screen to declare his Sample Fossil summoning, but Jim's split starts to slide in with it already about 50% of the way into the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing his slide-in to make it slide in more naturally, while also redoing Kenzan moving in the background to eliminate the ghosting during this split-screen's forming.
A bit after #4, Jim uses Sample Fossil to dig up Sabersaurus from Kenzan's Cemetery to make a specimen out of it, and as we see its chains working to drag its remains up from the ground, we see Kenzan still has Sabersaurus on his Disk despite it being in his Cemetery. Fixed this first in Photoshop by cleaning up the Monster Zone in question on the shot's first frame, then threw the fixed frame into Vegas, where I then shook it along with the screen for the rest of the shot, also slightly zooming it out and fading it out as the transition from Kenzan into the dug-up Sabersaurus happens.
Shortly after, as Jim taunts Kenzan about his lovely Sabersaurus specimen, Kenzan growls in response; Jim then slides in on a split-screen to say that Sample Fossil's ATK becomes equal to Sabersaurus's, but his split again starts to slide in with 50% of it already in the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing his slide-in so it slides in more naturally, and redoing Kenzan moving to again eliminate some footage ghosting.
A bit later, Kenzan activates his Treasure of Variation card, and as the close-up shot on it transitions into a split-screen splitting apart to show Kenzan behind it explaining its effect, each side of the split-screen jitters slightly in the frame before it properly starts to split apart. Fixed this in Vegas by holding the earlier frame over the jittering frame so that it properly splits apart in the next frame.
After Kenzan's next turn, as Jim wonders if the electromagnetic waves aren't behind Judai and co's exhaustion, he draws another Fossil Fusion; he smiles upon seeing it, but his smile ends up being slightly drawn onto his eye bandages. Fixed this in Vegas by just masking the eye bandages over it to keep his smile off the bandages.

(9) After Kenzan's Brachion switches into Defense Mode from Jim summoning Skullgios, Jim is impressed by its 3000 DEF; Kenzan slides in on a split-screen to think that there's no way he can hold off an attack from Skullgios, but his split only starts to slide in the frame after Jim starts to move for it, and with it starting about 50% of the way into the shot. Fixed this in Vegas by redoing Kenzan's slide-in to start as Jim moves and slide in more naturally.
(10) As Jim has Skullgios pause its attack on Brachion, Kenzan looks up and wonders why, but as he does, we see that Brachion is on his Disk in Attack Mode despite it just going into Defense Mode. Fixed first in Photoshop as I blanked the Monster Zone in the first frame of the shot, then took it into AfterEffects to add a proxy in Defense Mode, and then took the fixed frame into Vegas to re-pan into the footage, masking in Brachion as it starts to cover the Zone up.

Musical Musings - TTTE edition, Part 2
ALRIGHT!
My first musical analysis post has been getting a LOT of attention in the past few days or so. So first off, thank you for the love everyone, that was one of my favourite posts to make (besides the crackhead Gordon and Henry shitpost and my "Emily in the middle" rant). Second, since it appears that people like this sorta thing, I figured I'd share a couple more things that I've noticed, one of which I didn't put in the first post cause I figured people had already noticed it so it didn't need to be said. But I think I'll put it in anyways, just because. So let's get into it!
In pt. 1, I talked about the fact that Henry's theme has an occurrence of "3," in that each of the 4 beats in a bar was a triplet, and how Henry is the number 3 engine. Well, I was listening to his theme again and found two more occurrences of "3" in the introductory bars of the theme. For reference, I am talking about this part:
Each bar has the following rhythm:
Now, the first occurrence of 3 comes from the fact that the first 3 beats have the same rhythm, as shown in the above image. The second occurrence of 3 comes from the fact that the last beat of the bar is a triplet. 3 notes. Tack on the first occurrence of 3 from the first post, and you're 3 for 3 for NWR no. 3. HMMM........
2. Continuing with the subject of Henry's theme, this observation has probably already been made several times over, but I figured I'd put it in to continue the "Henry's theme" trend. If you take a listen to Henry's sad theme, you'll notice that its repeating motif is part of Henry's main theme in a different, minor, key with a different rhythm and at a slower tempo.

The numbers indicate the note's position within its scale. As you can see, both themes share the same note pattern. To get Henry's sad theme, you'd transpose the theme down a diminished 4th (i.e, move the notes down by this interval) to B major, and then adjust the D# and G# in the resulting melody to D natural and G natural to fit within the B minor scale so that it sounds sad. Nice job, Mike & Junior, very clever.
Just in case anyone is confused, the notes for the B major & minor scales are shown below:
3. Donald and Douglas' CGI whistles are the notes of C and A respectively. These notes are related in a couple of ways. The first/lowest note on a standard 88-key piano is an A, and the last/highest note is a C. Given the twins' original BR numbers (57646 & 57647 respectively), it appears that Douglas is the younger of the two, so their whistle notes make sense in this context. Additionally, as mentioned in pt. 1, the keys of C major and A minor are related in that they share a key signature of no accidentals (ie, no sharps, flats, double sharps or double flats, yes those last two exist and they gave me hell as a kid). Thus, the whistle notes would make sense in this context.
You'll often see modulation from either C major to A minor or vice versa in classical music. Two contrasting, yet complimentary keys with their own characters and personalities which work well together. Just like Donald and Douglas.
4. I was rewatching some of the season 7 episodes which have Arthur in them. And I think I kinda forgot how fucking huge this guy is. I also noticed just how low his whistle is in comparison to the other tank engines, perhaps emphasizing his bigger size and his more serious attitude in comparison to them.

hi gang!
it's been a while but i just wanted to sort out my progress on everything i'm working on rn ^^ especially since i've been getting quite a few new followers recently! welcome welcome to you all btw, i'm super happy to have you here ^w^
OLD_FOLKS HOME: as you might expect i've had a bit of trouble getting back into writing for OFH, but i'm finally on my way! chapter 23 is fully drafted save for some minor edits, and i've just cracked into chapter 24. the tournament arc will be four chapters in total, and once those are done i'll drop them on a biweekly basis! thanks so much for your patience on OFH, it's far outgrown its original scope but i truly do love working on it and can't wait to show you guys all my ideas ^^ if you've not checked out OFH or if you wanna catch up, now's a great time to do so! you can find it right here on ao3: [Link]

An example of reasons to block someone - yes your reason can be silly. I've blocked people for posting x reader fics, for shipping my notp, because i didn't like their AU. Not because I don't like them, or have anything against them, I just hate x reader fics in general, or didn't want to see my notp, or I just got tired of seeing their posts in a fandom tag. Rather than demanding they change, I changed how my tag looks to me. And that is responsible blocking. I also block racists, terfs, homophobes, etc. I blocked someone who was mean to me in replies. Do whatever to make your online experience good.
