I will never stop appreciating how ride or die Wylan is. this man allowed his ribs to be broken so he could embarrass his father. he doesn't necessarily like killing, but he's willing to for the mission. he's willing to do whatever it takes when Inej is kidnapped. and let's not forget how he risked permanently changing his appearance to look like someone else. he didn't know if he'd be able to change back. he didn't even tell Jesper, the man he had a huge crush on, because it might have affected the mission. once he commits to something, he'll pour everything he has into it.

I know Wylan saying "always hit where the mark isn't looking" in Crooked Kingdom is supposed to be a humorous nod to his "who's Mark?" line in Six of Crows but I can't help but think of it as a representation of an overlooked facet of his character development.

What I find the fandom forgets is that he's ultimately the least experienced of the Crows and the one who, let's be honest, is the least cut out to be a criminal. It has nothing to do with him being soft or whimpy (I want to unleash my inner Dirtyhands every time I hear someone say that), it's simply because he spent most of his life sheltered from the brutality of the Barrel. Yes, his household was abusive, but "he’d never had to work for anything. He’d had servants, hot meals, clean clothes. Whatever it took to survive the Barrel, Wylan knew he didn’t have it" - and he spent a total of three months in the Barrel prior to the events of Six of Crows. Had he not started doing demo for the Dregs, he would have definitely died in the Barrel - especially considering how he clings to his decency and morality because it's all he's got left, but they won't get him very far in a place like the Barrel.

Due to his inexperience, as Leigh puts it in the Crooked Kingdom collector's edition, he "wasn't a Crow yet" in book one: he wasn't accustomed to Barrel life, let alone the life of a criminal. (It also references how he learns to trust his crew and is now a part of them not out of desperation, but out of a bond beyond blood, but that's for another time.) Going from not understanding what "[hitting] the mark" means because he's autistic to, as Jesper puts it, "[being] thoroughly corrupted" signifies how he's finally started becoming accustomed to a life he's never had to lead before.

Remembrance by @blue-sunshine-mauve-morning

I finished binding Remembrance by @blue-sunshine-mauve-morning, which is the next part of The Desert Storm Epic. This is currently volume 2 of a projected 14/15 volumes!

some stats:

97,852 words || 384 pages

Title font: Ghaomiec

i'm still using the lovely @celestial-sphere-press' beautiful typesets. Sticking with the current theme, i decided to do Coruscant this time, with the Jedi Temple front and centre. Egged on by Des, this design is something like 10 times more complicated and took an entire hour to weed. The bookcloth is Colibri Copper, while endpapers are @renato-crepaldi, whose papers i love. I finished the bind with gold and brown silk endbands in 3 colours. Am likely to vary it up a little with the next volume with a different bookcloth colour, just for kicks.

Next up, I do have one more FFWAD bind to complete, and once i'm done with that, my physical stack of textblocks will have decreased to 4 (SUCCESS) and i can let myself print more things. Am working on my list of author copies as usual, slowly but surely.

i'm also waiting on legal paper (in the right grain this time) very excitedly, because i want to make more legal quarto books.

Reading “the grisha trilogy” after “six of crows” is weird, because most, if not all, good decisions by Alina are basically pure luck, while everything that happens in soc had been predicted and planed by Kaz, and the reason he doesn’t tell anyone is because he wants them to come up with that exact same idea

I JUST FOUND THIS PARALLEL IN SIX OF CROWS AND CROOKED KINGDOM THATS SO CUTE.

(Jesper shouldered his rifle. "Wylan earned his keep."

Wylan flushed a magnificent shade of pink. "Well, hopefully the medik will be here to fix my ribs soon," He said as he headed back to the parlor.

"Yeah?"

The being coalesces from smoke and shadow. His skin is the ashen grey of storm, his face shifting like distorted cloud over, and his eyes—the palest grey, nearly white, unmarred by the blackness of pupils.

“Beautiful,” Sunshine breathes, gazing up at this storm made flesh. A possessive smile curled his mouth into a violent smile. He did this. Harnessed a celestial into a mortal form.

“Who are you?” The celestial asks, his voice a gentle, thunderous rumble. Scorch-blackened fingertips come up to touch Sunshine’s face, and he can feel the crackle of lightning just beneath his skin. His own ever-changing feature settle, mirroring the man before him. A moment of calm in the storm.
