~Study snacks; something salty, something sweet, something crunchy. ~The tea is a Lapsang Souchong; a black tea from China that has a nice subtle taste (subtle for a black tea) and a very smokey aroma that makes it feel like you're drinking a campfire. Very pleasing, I enjoy drinking it on cold days.

より前に、松浦亜弥の音楽を聞いた。彼女はめちゃ綺麗です。子供の時に、よく聞いて、へやに歌うと踊った。めちゃなつかしい。ドキドキLOVEメール一番好きです。

N5 Grammar But Not Really

So if you've been doing your Genkis and whatnots you've likely come across the grammar point 「たり」, which you would use when you want to mention that you've done more than one action. Example sentence:

日曜日は買い物したり、映画を見たりした。。 "I went shopping and watched a movie on Sunday.

Okay but what if we used this grammar point of たり, and only listed one verb. Why would we do that? Let's take a look at a sentence from my last post.

「私はだれとも境遇を変えたりしないだろう」 "I won't let anyone change my circumstances."

So what is this grammar point doing here in this sentence? If we decided to remove that たりしない bit, it would turn into:

「私はだれとも境遇変えないだろう」 "I won't let anyone change my circumstances."

So this means the same thing directly translated, however the former, has a different nuance than the "standard" latter. Adding a たりしない to the sentence, emphasizes that it is very unlikely to change the circumstances in the above example.

Why could this be the case and why does it mean this? This is likely conjecture here based on some readings. Normally, when you use たり by itself, it means that aside from the singular action enlisted, other things may or may not happen. For example:

「今日は本を読んだりしたい」 "I want to read a book today"

The above sentence implies that aside from wanting to read something else, the subject would like to do other things that have not yet, if at all, been mentioned.

Using the same logic when looking at the 「私はだれとも境遇を変えたりしないだろう」 sentence, we can assume that you can't change the subject's circumstances, and nothing else can be done.

Hopefully I am correct on this, I can't find an explanation good enough for me to be 100% confident. Here's the sources (The latter was extremely useful):

Day 17

昨日は、私のボイフレンドと私は、6周年です！私たち、ブリスベンシティに行った。夕食時に、韓国のバーベキューを食べった。おなかいっぱい😂✨

Busy yesterday, if you read the Japanese you know why! 😂 So no study yesterday. But today I studied hard!

Almost 2 hours for jpdb. Started writing the kanji to guess them rather then just imagining what they are.

Started my Japanese word search books. Towards the end my brain wanted to explode. But that happens in English also for word searches.

Finally got the guts to post practice entries on journaly.com. Was absolutely terrified to do this but I finally did it. My user name is MilkyPinkRose.

Got a copy of サンリオ男子 that I’m going to start later today or tomorrow on my iPad.

Also downloaded 星カフェ and 夜カフェ

I’m so exhausted. Now to feed my grumpy cat.

One's circumstances; environment, life situation

Today's word was chosen because I had thought it was an interesting word that essentially means circumstances. Typically having to do with a person's circumstances. For this post I looked up some example sentences. The query was done in Japanese, so I'll see if I can successfully translate some of these.

「運のいい境遇に生まれる。」 "They were born into fortunate circumstances" (subject not clear)

「彼は自分の境遇に満足していなかった」 "He was not satisfied with his own circumstances."

「あのころは幸せな境遇だった.」 "My situation was happy back then."

"私はだれとも境遇を変えたりしないだろう" "I won't let anyone change my circumstances."

This was pretty straight forward. I actually learned a grammar lesson from these example sentences, which I may bring up in a later post, as I am trying to find an explanation!
