GLASSHOUSE wears many hats – record label, talent agency, music production wizard. picture this: over ten groundbreaking groups emerged from its ranks during its golden era. at the heart of it all was the debut of LILYPAD, a four-member girl group that rocked the stage and put GLASSHOUSE on the map with a splash of resources and recognition. under the skilled guidance of DO GA-IN, GLASSHOUSE thrived, earning praise for its ability to produce star power and shape the careers of emerging artists.

fast forward to 2015, and a bombshell announcement: GA-IN, the founder extraordinaire, was taking a step back. in her place? none other than GRACE, the youngest member from LILYPAD. the news rattled cages, sparking protests and even a temporary boycott, but GLASSHOUSE weathered the storm, proving that change, though unexpected, is part of the game.

The idea of logging on a colonized alien planet brings my mind back to the planet Lalonde from Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn books - a world that had very hard wood as its only meaningful export, and was also stuck developing its economy from agriculturalism (due to investment shortages, though).

All this is to say - Hey! What are some foundational inspirations for your sci fi verse? You gotta have some like recommendations of classic or older sci-fi for us, right? What are some of your suggestions of books and authors to read?

OK SO - My sci-fi tastes have sort of ended up in some very specific niches. Growing up, I was a Larry Niven +Jerry Pournelle man, in part because my dad amassed a huge collection of their books - then gave 90% of them away before i was old enough to read them. So one of my teenage missions was rebuilding that library, trash and all!

Stuff like Footfall, Ringworld, Gil "The Arm" Hamilton, Protector (yes i attempted to name a comic series similarly, and paid for it) "The Mote in God's Eye"... you name it, I read fuckloads of these books. And while they tend to land on a sort of human chauvinist "mankind will win based on his inherent adaptive human-ness, and the aliens will fail because of their rigid alien-ness", this shit was very foundational to me.

Their more collaborative series, The Man-Kzin Wars and War World, also loom large in my teenage mind. The Man-Kzin wars are super fun - humans meet a race of tiger-men, and go from being NWO peaceniks to roughneck cat-skinners in a generation! PEACE AND LOVE WONT DEFEAT TIGER MEN!

Similarly, war world (like lots of that 70s/80s military sci fi) was a sort of catch-all for western military nerds to play with their favorite factions - it was a planet where all the un-ruleable ethnic groups and nationalities had been deported by the authoritarian earth government, and left to rot... until a race of genetically engineered fascist super men land on the world, and start trying to rule the place. Pretty fun shit.

As I got older, I turned hard into William Gibson, and read the absolute shit out of both the Neuromancer trilogy and the Bridge trilogy, as well as his short stories. Bruce Sterling was part of that wave for me, too, and I religiously sought his old paperbacks out too. In terms of novels, "Distraction" is my favorite coherent Sterling Novel - though the short stories in the "Schismatrix" novel/collection of his remain my absolute favorite space opera pieces.

At this age, too, I found my top-top fave Sterling Stories - "Taklaman" and "Bicycle Repairman", both gritty pseudo-cyberpunk stories of the highest degree, in this collection:

This thousand-plus page collection of short stories and novellas was basically my bible for a few years - i put sticky notes on each story i loved and meant to return to, until the book was so festooned with sticky note bookmarks i abandoned the practice altogether. If you have the chance, just buy this book and chew on it for a few years.

As i got into my 20s, Charles Stross became my lode star - his books like Accelerando and Glasshouse were total game changers for me. They come with their own peculiarities, but I loved his transhuman/posthuman musings (or at least i was obsessed with his stuff for a good few years - the venn diagram of his obvious interests and my own overlapped enough that his books were great fodder for a growing sci-fi loving brain).

But since then, my main literary squeeze has been the great man, JACK VANCE. Working on Prophet, my friend @cmkosemen made a remark about how much the early issues of the series reminded him of a book series called "Planet of Adventure" or "the Tschai Cycle", by Jack Vance. The book has a beautifully simple setup - a man from an entirely undescribed spacefaring human civilization crash-lands onto a weird planet. But on that planet, he finds four separate civilizations, each who possess a population of enslaved humans, culturally and physically molded to the needs of their masters. And each book of this series covers our generic hero's interactions with each bizarre expoitative culture. I was extremely intrigued.

Soon thereafter, I found my current absolute favorite book - "THE DRAGON MASTERS". A book about an isolated medieval world... which gets visited, once every few generations, by a black pyramid starship, flown by a reptilian race known as the Greph. The greph capture humans to (surprise surprise) breed them into hyper specific slaves... who in turn become Greph-like in their thinking and demeanours. But the last time the BLACK PYRAMID landed, a bunch of angry medieval dudes stormed the thing, blew it up, and captured a bunch of greph... who became the breeding stock for a whole new human world of slave labour. By the time we meet this planet, the two rival lords of the human-populated regions have been breeding greph slave warriors, or "dragons", for generations, for combat against one another. But soon, the black pyramid will return...

I love this book I even spent a good few months during covid talking with the Vance Estate and several publishers about developing it into a graphic novel, but nobody could quite agree on how it could get made with old Simon getting a paycheque... so sadly it fell apart. There are concept drawings floating around my patreon and other corners of the internet. But one day I'll use 'em...

My other favorite books of his, to name a couple of the MANY books of his I love:

THE BLUE WORLD: A caste system of humans, descended from a crashed prison ship, live on floating settlements on an ocean planet, paying protection to a giant long-lived intelligent crustacean. But one man is tired of giving up all his crops to this tyrannical megafauna...

THE MIRACLE WORKERS: Rival lords on a planet descended to medieval tech (surprise surprise) fight using armies... and rival SORCERORS who employ the powers of suggestion to voodoo each others' warriors... but when facing non-human intelligences, these sorceror's skills fall short.

But there are heaps more, and I love most (thought not all) of the ones i've read. They're generally short, concise, and full of all sorts of bizarre bullshit.

THere are more books i've read and enjoyed in my life, of course, but these are the core ones that I think of when I think of my career as a sci-fi reader... let me know what your top recs are!

Ok re Hob+food

Can we talk about the sheer abundance of the modern era compared to 1389

an average supermarket has more fruit and veg and meat than an average peasant has seen outside of feast days. and the variety too, even out of season fruit. grown in glasshouses because thats a thing now

(this brings up Hob feeling alienated from the modern world because he can’t rely on the fruit in season and the nature around him as a natural calendar)

because I’m me, Hob having periods of disordered eating because everything tastes so different, or he keeps finishing everything on his plate even tho he’s full because he doesn’t want to waste food, or Hob getting that weird squirmy feeling at the supermarket knowing how much would be thrown away and he has to walk out before having a panic attack. basically portion control and survivor’s guilt issues. because why does Hob get to have all the world’s wonders right at the corner shop while his family never had enough to feel full?

This is a great point! Although Hob has had a long time to adapt to the changes that have come throughout his lifetime, I think that deep down, a bit of his mind is always still connected to the 14th century. When things get bad, no matter what the circumstances - a breakup, a bad period at work, just bad news in general - I feel like the food issue would become more prominent. He returns to this baseline of food insecurity, he only wants to eat really specific things and when he tries to make them they never taste right because of how much ingredients have changed. He either struggles to eat at all, or he panics and eats everything in his fridge in one go. These periods never last very long, but they are a part of his life now.

Of course there's another side to all of this, which is just... absolute wonder and joy. The 21st century is full of flavours and textures he never could have imagined. Food from other cultures, ingredients that were once rare now available so cheaply. Just think about vanilla! Once it was worth more than Hob’s life. Now it's a byword for boring and average. Isn't that incredible?

Hob would never pretend that it's easy to navigate his issues with food, but nor would he ever want to forget about how amazing it is to see the shelves stocked with colour and variety. He feels very lucky. And he's going to live his life to the fullest in honour of the people who never got that opportunity.

❝  pretty much every third gen kpop fan has heard of 4TUNE. one of the biggest boy groups not only of their generation but of kpop overall, its hard to meet a kpop fan who doesn’t know them. with their success however also came a hard road of mistreatment and abuse from their company LIGHT UP ENTERTAINMENT. while harmonies and fans with a heart are thankful that 4TUNE’s contract was recently bought by GLASSHOUSE INC, it begs the question of what is going to happen to the other groups under the company. will their contracts be bought as well? will light up go bankrupt? will we ever hear from them again?  ❞

𓍢 ✷ꜜ ࣪ . THE HISTORY OF LIGHT UP ENT !

❝  LIGHT UP ENTERTAINMENT was established in november 4th, 2012 by ceo HAN JINWOO. a man who had been fresh out of high school, he didn’t want to have to get a real job, and being the spoiled brat that he is convinced his very wealthy parents to buy him a company for him to run. LIGHT UP would come together very sloppily and unprofessionally, however, with JINWOO’s charms he managed to create an image of this “perfect” company for trainees to be under. he wanted perfect idols, idols who’d listen to him no matter what, and he managed to almost get his way with that. the company would manage three groups under it before the start of its downfall in early 2024 due to allegations of abuse, sexual assault, among many other things would come to light.  ❞

𓍢 ✷ꜜ ࣪ . 4TUNE !

❝  LIGHT UP ENTERTAINMENT’s most seuccessful group, as well as its first group, 4THNE would put the company on the map. it would unfortunately be due to 4TUNE’s success that the members of IN BLOOM and ASTERIX would audition for the company, with no idea of the things that would go on behind closed doors. the boys were mistreated severely due to JINWOO pushing the idea that success was pain and that hurting constantly was the price of fame. it would be due to the members of 4TUNE speaking out and member KAIZ specifically suing the company for abuse that LIGHT UP’s problems would come to light.  ❞

𓍢 ✷ꜜ ࣪ . IN BLOOM !

❝  IN BLOOM is a south korean girl group under LIGHT UP ENTERTAINMENT. the second group to come out of LIGHT UP, the girls would originally be known for their cutesy/girl crush concept. they would make their debut on may 3rd, 2018 with the youngest member being only fourteen years old and the oldest seventeen. the ages of the girls alone would spark controversy amongst netizens that was carefully covered up by the company. however, when the oldest member would turn eighteen is when netizens would especially raise their concern for the safety of the group.

when IN BLOOM’s oldest member MIYEON would turn eighteen in 2019, the group’s concept would drastically change from its once cutesy concept to one that was mature, way too mature for any of the members, especially the maknae. with all this criticism and extra focus on the group, fans started to notice bruises on the girls. hashtags would begin flooding the internet only to be taken down quickly allegedly because LIGHT UP threatened legal action.

IN BLOOM would continue to comeback despite the concern around the girls safety. however, they would have their last comeback in may of 2023, and have not been heard since. fans are concerned about the girls safety as 4TUNE has brought up a lot of concerning things about the safety of LIGHT UP. fans can only wonder what the girls are going through if they are trapped.  ❞

𓍢 ✷ꜜ ࣪ . ASTERIX !

❝  ASTERIX is the second boy group under LIGHT UP ENTERTAINMENT and the last one that we know of at the moment ( surely with 4TUNE leaving, the company is scrambling to find more trainees to debut ). this group is also the group that never really hid how badly they were being treated, because it was so normalized. ASTERIX is a nine member boy group that formed through survival show STAR BOY. they woupd make their debut on february 12th, 2022, fans speculate that LIGHT UP knew that 4TUNE would be exposing them soon and created the survival show to trap trainees under the company in case they tried to leave. ASTERIX is LIGHT UP’s insurance in a sense.

because the mistreatment that happens during survival shows, especially minors has become so normalized, no one really spoke up or necessarily saw a problem with how the ASTERIX boys as well as the other trainees were treated theoughout the show. food was would be offered only as a reward to the winning team, losing teams had to sleep all in the gymnasium rather than the dorms. trainees would be sporting bruises throughout performances and added scenes but it was brushed over as just boys “roughhousing.”

the mistreatment of the boys did not only take place on the show, but is actually still going on to this day. on december 5th, 2023, ASTERIX would have their fourth comeback of the year, following four mini albums and a single the year before. and before the news of 4TUNE leaving LIGHT UP was announced, it was revealed that ASTERIX was having yet another comeback on march 30th. their members are all born between 2003 and 2004 all barely adults. the boys are currently being extremely overworked, and because of their contract, fans are unsure if they even have to option to leave LIGHT UP.   ❞

❝  it is safe to say that fans are extremely concerned about the wellbeing and safety of the remaining groups and trainees under LIGHT UP ENTERTAINMENT following 4TUNE terminating their contracts with the company. fans have been spreading the hashtags #SAVEINBLOOM and #SAVEASTERIX. whether you are a harmony, poppy, or cosmo, please understand that we are genuinely concerned about the remaining 4TUNE groups. please help us make a big enough reaction to actually incite change.  ❞

Remember the design of Snow´s wife I did a a while ago? Well... I promised you a younger design of her and here she is: Livia Dawnsong!

Some facts:

She is the daughter of Military General and Panem´s Defense Minister Lucanus Dawnsong. This lineage qualified her to study at the Capitol Academy.

She has an older brother named Scipio, a high-ranked Military Officer, as well as a younger sister named Aurelia.

When Coriolanus was in his last year at the Academy she was two classes below him. Over all she is around three years younger than him in general.

Livia had a crush on Snow for a long time just as many girls did during Academy days. He was a handsome young man and very popular thanks to his charm.

While Coriolanus didn´t seem to catch interest in her before he had to go to district 12, he certainly did when he came back. Livia was easy to manipulate, she idolized him and on top she came from a wealthy and powerful Capitol family - exactly what he needed. (At least at one point in her life she started to question him more and more until the flower of her love started to fade away due to his cruelty)

She hated Lucy Gray at first since Livia was jealous of her and Coryo´s relationship (that changed at one point as well after she finds out what happened to Lucy Gray)

Livia was an overall pretty smart and popular girl in her Academy days and beyond. The parties she threw in the Dawnsong mansion were legendary.

Had a passion for plants. She grew lots flowers and exotic plants in the glasshouse of her family´s mansion. Both she and Coryo had a green thumb.

Criticisms of the Waldorf educational approach

As mentioned in the last post on this, the Waldorf educational style emphasizes:

A slow build towards academic topics, spending more time on imagination and relationships in early grades;

A low-tech nature-oriented approach; and

An “everybody is important” mindset.

Advocates say that this approach can help children’s creativity, support motivation for learning, and remove/defer societal pressures on children. However, there are also detractors/critics.

Below, a few of the criticisms of the Waldorf (also sometimes called Steiner) educational approach.

Deferred Academics

So as we pointed out in the last post, the Waldorf approach to education seeks to protect children from the pressures of the outside world.

Consistent with this philosophy, many Waldorf schools don’t teach traditional ‘basic skills’ in literacy and numeracy until students are older.

(Note how in “Relax”, Bluey didn’t know numbers when she asked Mum which button to press in the elevator.)

Up until about age 7, most learning occurs through storytelling, drawing, and oral communication. There is greater emphasis on social skills, creativity, arts, and practical sciences. This fosters an appreciation of these topics in children as they mature.

On one hand that sounds good — academics and a drive to perform can be tough on children at any age. But there are many parents who also want to make sure their their children are not at a disadvantage. If a child misses out on the first few years of learning, potentially a student could fall behind and find it impossible to catch up?

Fortunately, many studies of the success rates and exam results of Steiner/Waldorf taught children demonstrate that this is not the case; Waldorf students ultimately perform academically as well, if not better, than non-Waldorf students despite a later start on academic subjects.

No Tech

The Steiner/Waldorf approach to teaching focuses on natural environments with a strong focus on beauty and a natural aesthetic, hence wooden furniture, simple wooden toys, etc.

No computers, no tablets, no TVs.

Does this put children in these schools at a disadvantage? These days, middle-class western children are using tablet computers from a young age, and they’re very much a part of “regular” schools.

As technology becomes more and more integral the gap between Waldorf schools and technology-heavy STEM/STEAM programs in mainstream schools might be viewed negatively.

Note that in “Bluey”, Bluey and Bingo appear to have their screen time (tablet and TV) limited/restricted. And there are subtle hints that TV time is discouraged and to be kept to a minimum. Whereas Muffin and Socks may be getting more screen time at their house.

This may not be a problem if students are exposed to age-appropriate levels/quantities of technology outside of school, the way Bluey and Bingo are.

One Teacher For 5 To 8 Years(!)

Teachers tend to stay with students for multiple years in Waldorf schools. A student potentially can have the same teacher for five to eight years.

There are pros and cons to this approach.

Students theoretically are able to develop deep relationships with their teacher which could give them more comfort and a greater sense of familiarity/security. Almost an additional parent figure?

However, teacher turnover can also be a positive thing. Individual teachers have their strengths and weaknesses.

Also, it can be a good thing for a student to experience a range of different teachers and adult influences to gain a breadth of experiences of different teaching personas. Such as a male teacher vs. a female one. New teachers bring fresh perspectives.

If a child doesn’t gel with their teacher, they could be encumbered with them for up to eight years.

Waldorf Schools Are Expensive

Generally speaking, Waldorf schools are private. Because of this, they are often too expensive for working-class or low-income families. $10,000 AUD for a year’s tuition is not unheard of, although these costs vary from one grade to another and from school to school.

Not everyone in Bluey’s friend group are in the same economic group; some are well-to-do, like Chloe (and Honey, I’d assume) and some less so based on their homes. Maybe some of the families have access to grants?

🍒 Jack is there for you all the time- physically and emotionally. He might not be the best at comfort, but he’ll try his damnest. 

🍒 Tired from a long day? Here, he’ll let you cozy up on his chest as you sniffle into him, whining about your day. Emotionally spent? He’ll invite you to spend an hour or two with him in the glasshouse quietly, so you can relieve your thoughts and focus on something else. Physically exhausted? He tried this on his siblings- let him give you a massage. It’s a little clumsy, but he’s definitely trying.

🍒 He’s very romantic! If there’s a day that’s tied to romance that is not Valentine’s day (Cuddle Day, Kiss Day, so on), he’s on it. For example, for Cuddle Day, he’ll wrap his arms around you and cuddle, tail happily wagging (or do the other way around, where YOU spoon HIM instead. I’m sure he’d love that)

🍒 If you’re cold, he’ll wrap his jacket around you, but if you insist on something warmer, he’ll (with a sigh) lend you his tail and smile softly when you play with it. You’re too cute for your own good, you know that?

Deuce Spade

🍒 He likes sleeping on your lap. It soothes him because its what Mama Spade used to do with him as a kid, so it’s been ingrained in his head. Top that with an ear cleaning and he’s in heaven. You’re just everywhere on him and it makes him happy.

🍒 He loves it when you wear his clothes. It’s such an honor when he sees you walking around, messing about with Ace and Grim in HIS clothes that when you guys eventually fuck up, he’s not even mad/ disappointed because of this silly grin on his face. 

🍒 Deuce admires you for your courage. To change and to grow… he totally gets how hard it is and finds you incredible.

🍒 He likes your hands! They’re different from his, all beaten and cut up from his middle school days, so seeing yours pleases him in ways he can’t word.

🍒 Deuce likes the stereotypical kisses in movies (another romantic from the first years). Kisses on the cheek on goodbye, ‘welcome home’ kisses, neck kisses, all that stuff. He’s a sucker for them and does not give a shit if the other first years tease him for it.

🍒 Again, a romantic, so he’ll give you flowers- all sorts. He doesn’t remember their meanings, so he comes up with them that are specific to you. For example, sunflowers for your resilience, dandelions for your breeziness, so on and so forth.

Ace Trappola

🍒 He says ‘I love you’ without actually saying it by ruffling your hair (P.S.: he does this all the time). It’s an effective way of messing with you, but there hidden affection behind his actions that’s difficult to see (except with friends).

🍒 Going along with the ‘I love you’, it’s rare for you to get an actual ‘I love you’ from him, since he normally hides it behind jokes, so when you hear it, he’s being raw with his emotions.

🍒 He brought you this room for your first date. I know, I know, you’re like ‘WHAT?’ but listen. I think Ace is pretty entertaining without an agenda, so your first date would be just the two of chatting in his room, occasionally touching and bumping hands as you explore each other (relationship-wise).

🍒 He LOVES PDA. Not only does he get to show YOU off and tell the world you’re a pair, he also gets to annoy other single people (read: the other first years). A true jackass, your honor, but he’s your jackass.

🍒 He’s feisty, so there’s a lot of joking/teasing banter between you two. If a stranger catches you two, they’ll definitely think you’re fighting but no, that’s just your love language.

🍒 He’ll drag you into his pranks to play on his friends and get in trouble together, making you a ‘partner-in-crime’ sort of deal. It brings this rush of adrenaline to him knowing that you don’t mind getting into trouble with him and for him.

Elliott is AT the show. He spends the whole day happily gardening and swapping tips with people and sharing gardening implements and generally just having an absolutely grand time of it. He has never been more excited about any festival before, and then it just gets DESTROYED. His daughter is there. He knows that they won't escape the glasshouse. The only thing he can do is grab her in his arms and try to shield her from it and shout not to be afraid, to hope that if this all comes down, it will actually make a difference for her. It misses them, mostly, and though he is injured, he ignores it for the time being. There's more important things to be focused on than cracked ribs or likely head trauma--as long as he's upright, he intends to pitch in. He ends up helping with the relief efforts, doing whatever he can to make things work, running triage, helping search parties, directing people--whatever Jenny has for work, he's doing it, because they need all the help they can get. He can't just do nothing, not when the City is falling apart and no one in power is doing anything to stop it. The ship ends up doing what it did during the GCO, serving as a shelter and meeting ground and field hospital for anyone that wanders on board. He's among the exhausted zailors that are clearly out of their depth but are among the numbers that have agreed to give it their all for however long it takes. When it eventually becomes clear that this isn't working, when they finally change the playing field to the air, he is coaxed into helping there, too, even though he is terrified of the dirigibles. He is going to give his life if they ask him to, because the City is worth more than him. If it secures everyone's safety, it's more than worth it. The airship doesn't make it, but they manage to land it safely (more or less) without suffering any casualties (only injuries). He is watching the roof and knows that people he loves are still up there. He doesn't know how this is going to end

Warren is at the show, too, when the stalactite comes down. She knows that something horrible is going on, and she doesn't know what it is, but all she knows is she's petrified and can't run away and her father is grabbing her and shouting in terror not to be scared, and that scares her even more. Whatever it is, he is afraid for his life, and hers too. The stalactite misses her, she's scared but mostly unharmed, and everyone is rushed outside as quickly as possible to get them away from whatever is happening, and the sounds of it are seared into her mind. She is dragged into Parabola briefly, but she won't stay there. Not when everyone she cares about is out there. She does what she can to help, but mostly she huddles with other survivors to keep out of the way. Arthur wishes her a happy birthday, and so does everyone in the room with them when they overhear it. She doesn't feel like it's really much to celebrate, huddled in this building with a bunch of strangers. It isn't exceptionally festive in any case. Someone scrounges together a couple sweets as a gift, an apology that THIS is her party. Elliott wishes a happy birthday to her, too, when she sees him, and seems surprised that it's already Friday. The time is slipping away from him. She doesn't see him much, though. He's constantly busy with work right now, sleeping on the ship during the brief moments he does, and then going right back to work. She feels terribly alone during this except for Arthur, and she would never slight him by implying that he isn't enough, but she is reminded very poignantly of being on the streets with no one but eachother to rely on, and wants some reassurance this won't be the case again. And then everyone is going up, up where she can't go, where she won't go because it's a place for grownups, because she's afraid, because there is the very real chance she won't come back if she does. The missed birthday doesn't feel very important right now, but she is reassured before everyone leaves that they will return for a makeup party. She wants to believe it's true

Arthur hears the sound of the stalactite from home. He doesn't know, but he knows that that's where his kid is. He's running the rooftops in the opposite direction of the urchins fleeing the destruction, and there is the wreckage of the glasshouse. His kid is in there. The pair of them stumble out of the wreckage, and he scrambles up onto her shoulders to purr as hard as he can and reassure her. He's getting them out of here, NOW. There's no time to wait for Elliott--he'll find them, the first priority is getting the kid into Parabola, getting her into his territory where she'll be safe. She won't stay here, and he knows it, but he can keep her here as long as he can. He can prolong the safety as far as he can stretch it before they're back out in the thick of it. He picks through wreckage, bringing back supplies to barter and food to eat, whatever he can get to try and keep them both taken care of. Despite his dislike of him, he's regretful to see Elliott go. He's even more regretful to hear word that the ship's are being destroyed, that only a slim percentage are landing with crew intact enough to revive. He's frightened by the prospect of them having to forge a new family. He's worried about his kid pulling through this

Florence isn't near the glasshouse when it starts, she didn't care about the show at all, but she knows when things start going south. She can hear the destruction and the screaming, and word reaches her quickly of exactly what is happening over there. There are a couple people she checks on, but she's not about to risk her own neck needlessly. She hits the Flit and is up as high as she can get, away from everything that's going on in the streets. And it takes some time, but eventually Jenny gets things moving in the right direction, and they need extra hands, and she considers Jenny her rival, but this is a little more important than her grudge. And then she's running the search parties, and then she's lying when they ask about her qualifications, and then she's captaining an airship she has absolutely no business being behind the wheel of to take surveys. And it's fun! It's exciting! It feels good to be doing something that might actually help, and, she must admit, it's thrilling to be piloting a dirigible at inadvisable speeds and hurtling between stalactites and dodging obstacles (geographic and organic alike). And then she hears the plan. She receives her orders and they say "you're going to push ahead and take it on directly" and suddenly this is very very real. Suddenly these people's lives are in her hands while she's playing pretend, and she can't back out now, but what is she supposed to do? So she goes. They rise with the others, and she pushes through, and as soon as she sees the oculus, everything is brought into sharp focus. This is more real than she was prepared for. That shaft of light falls, and it's the first time she's ever seen the Sun. It is unimaginably bright, searing her eyes and forcing her to flinch and put a hand up to shield herself from it. That is going to kill everyone. The cannons keep glancing off of it, and everyone around them is going down. THEY'RE going down. So she looks at the handful of people in the ship with her and all she can say is "I'm sorry" before pointing the wreckage straight at the certain doom ahead of them. The woman that wouldn't risk her neck for anyone is aiming straight for certain death in the hopes that it will mean something. That it will save the City she hadn't thought worth saving just a couple weeks ago. And when the Boat Man confirms it did something--that plan WORKED--she is beside herself. She is screaming in absolute, overwhelming joy, shaking the Starved Lithologer by the shoulders and reaching to do the same to the Boat Man. She hasn't been an urchin or a zailor's wife for a long time, but that doesn't mean she doesn't remember the shanties and stupid songs they riffed off of Mahogany Hall classics, and her celebration doesn't end when she's back in London proper

The Surgeon is busy when the festivities roll around, and all the better for it. Sitting in a building full of strangers and spore fever isn't exactly his idea of a good time. But there is no denying the sounds that erupt from the site are the kind of utter destruction. The sounds like a fraction of the next City is dropping. He's disgusted to hear it's Starved, their amber tainted presence a blight upon the City. Truthfully, he doesn't care to lend a hand, but he knows Shale does, and anything they want of him is theirs. So he opens the doors of his clinic as another spot to bring the wounded for treatment, distinctly aware of the scars that arc across his chest reacting to the presence of the amber and its bearers. The body never forgets. He doesn't do anything with the airships--that isn't his skill set, and he doesn't intend to risk his own safety or anyone else's by going up there and deciding to try and figure it out on the fly. There is enough work on the ground to keep him busy while other people decide to be heroes

Bolormaa didn't even intend to still be in London, but he's at the Docks when the stalactite falls. They can see it from there, see it plummeting towards the glasshouse and the people within it, and instantly the whole ship is disembarking and sprinting towards it, with him leading the pack. He's dragging people out of the rubble and away from danger, and hoping the entire time that none of these people who are beyond salvaging are ones that he cares about. He is among the first to enlist with the Admiralty to serve as their gunners, using his expertise with a cannon to the great advantage of everyone who doesn't want to see London torn to pieces as much in its defense as in its attack. He is unsure of how long he's at his post, training new people on the fly and keeping at it himself, but he is occasionally dragged away from his station to snatch a little bit of rest before he's right back to it. He doesn't have much sway back at home, he isn't an important political figure, but he sends a letter in Hudum nonetheless imploring them to send support. He doesn't love London. He isn't even sure he likes it. But that doesn't mean that everyone in it deserves to have their homes destroyed and their lives lost. When they ask for help on the airships, he's again one of the first enlisting. They need all the help they can get if they're trying to take the oculus out, missed shots don't count. When the airship starts going down, he fires off one last shot that pings off of it but doesn't do any damage. He knows the only choice is to try and land and hope that whoever is up there can come up with a better plan

Rhoda is in the Shuttered Palace when everything happens--she is in the middle of the horribly dull hobnobbing expected of her at these awful salons, when suddenly the world outside seems to be crashing down upon them. The doors lock so suddenly she doesn't even have time to register what it means, instead pressed to the windows like the other guests, trying to catch a glimpse of what it is. Nobody gets in, and nobody gets out. People who come to the Palace to beg for help are turned away without an audience, without even a shred of hope, and she's so filled with rage and disgust at the lack of any care from inside, that she shatters a window to the outside. She watches in horror at everything happening out there. There are innocent people out there. Her brother is out there. She bides her time in a frenzy of sketches of new ideas for arrangements, fungal and elegant, and then into the grotesque forms of the creatures mutilating the City. The Palace may be well stocked, but it can only hold out for so long. The first time a supply run is made, she's ready. She bolts, taking the cart with her and getting it to Jenny's headquarters where it will be defended by people who deserve to use it. She doesn't know a d___ed thing about flying, she doesn't attempt to join the airships, but that doesn't mean that she isn't busy. There is work to be done until the last plank is put up, the last injury healed, the last ship landed. This isn't her City, she doesn't love London, but she does love the people within it. It's up to its citizens to defend it themselves, and she watches with anxiety to see what happens next

The home in St. Louis, a goofy writing about Flo

The weather was warm on the outskirts of St. Louis as Flo was busying herself, tidying the place where she calls home. Dusting this, organising there, and a lot of shuffling her numerous plants until she felt contempt. She was in her element whilst cleaning, when she could allow her mind to drift and wander about all the fairytale scenarios that may have played out in this wonderland of viridian and hidden veils. It was moments like these, where she could finally let herself rest and allow any worries and fears to melt away in her 19th century floorboards she loves so dearly. Thinking about this home sent her back to her childhood, running to the heavy oak door and being greeted by the warm smile of her beloved late grandma, the smell of sassafras and pollen heavy in the thick, humid summer air. Flo could smell these wonderful smells now, as she closed her eyes and painted a picture, a picture of happy times, filled with gratitude that she may live in this home she once only saw in her dreams, and the exclusive summer days when she would be persuasive enough to allow her father to stay here a few nights. She meandered down the delicate spiral staircase into the kitchen, just as she remembered it in her youth. Flo could remember helping her grandmother, although it was more likely that she got in the way more than helping. Flo would run around the kitchen, grabbing this and stirring that, all whilst glued to the hip of her fair and friendly grandmother. Propping herself on a bar stool, she remembered her young eager self pulling herself upon these exact stools to perch and enjoy a cherry, rhubarb or apple pie made by her tender and ever generous grandma. She looked fondly at the jukebox across the room, although she was not in the mood for dance. Flo sat and simply savoured this time, guilty of not being able to share these moments. Her loneliness struck her, although it’s been seven years of living in this home, she was filled with a sense of absolute loneliness. She turned her head to her counter, a small tank sat filled with plants. In the tank a small frog, covered in more colours than the sunset, sat enjoying the humidity of this spring afternoon. Maybe she wasn’t fully alone, though her pet, lovingly named Chevron for his pointy features, wasn’t much of a talker. Flo stood as she touched the countertop of the galley island where the stools were lined up neatly in a row. She wandered her way into her gorgeous garden, laced in cobbled pathways, fruit trees, rose bushes, a small pond, a glasshouse for her exotic plants and more. Gratuity filled her heart as she realised just how fortunate she was to be left with such a gorgeous and well loved home. She briskly stepped towards a bench by the side of the house, feeling the grooves of the wood as she seemingly melted on the weathered planks that have been here for as long as time. As a general ending mood, I like the "cottage scenario", but I think that it would feel weird if Aziraphale had to give up the bookshop. I would rather have it that, since Aziraphale, as I understand, owns most of his block in Soho, at the very end – which will be fine, as “most things are fine in the end” – in a moment of enthusiasm they will accidentally miracle away a whole chunk of the adjacent building (which will conveniently be just useless storage space) and summon a beautiful, cozy, walled secret garden all for themselves,

with a couple of slender trees to provide shadow in the summers and fragrant flower bushes,

and a bench placed in front of a little pond (where a duck or two may come to swim from time to time),

and chairs and a wee table just large enough to put a bottle and a couple of glasses in the evenings, with possibly an occasional plate of Eccles cakes,

and a small glasshouse in a corner where Corwley's plants can live,

and everything softly lit by a handful of vintage wall lanterns (the kind that you could have found maybe in Paris on a moody night of the early 1900s that for some reason you still remember) and a string of fairy lights that somehow don't require any electricity to work,

Cool Hoepian world Plants (no images cause too tired to hunt through the ones that exist)

Demon Rose- A thorn-venomous plant that can only grow parasitically on the bodies of dragons and humans. Despite the need to partially feed off its host it is a symbiotic relationship, and can only have an easy time bonding onto a host with a physical disability (immunity or neurologically related being the most common cases). Can grow rapidly and is connected to the nervous system (generally the base of the plant grows along the spine of the host) enough that one can somewhat feel the plant like an extension of their body. Unlike the majority of Hoep's plants, it was created (the only other known Created plant being the more down-to-earth crop plant the Bananachoke). Probably the most un-plant-like of Hoepian Plants.

Kabakin Pumpkin- "It's just a stupid pumpkin" "it's not just a pumpkin. It's a gourd!" pretty unassuming but is more than just a glowy funky pumpkin plant. As a defense its anatomy is designed to deflect all forms magic, making it useful for magic containment with the gourds and textiles from the vines. Among wilder properties has been found to even be able to distort the spell that gives Hoepian dragons their human forms in the right concoctions (leading to both cool and terrifying new forms). The jungles they reside in get very dangerous during the Wraith Eclipse due to the fact that spirits often refract through the plants during that time of year like a spiritual megaphone.

Snow Candle- basically skunk cabbage on steroids; found in the icelands of the south, they help extend the very short growing season by warming up and melting away the snow meters away from said plants from their furnace-like heat, making room for a micro ecosystem of other flora and fauna that would not thrive in any other way.

Glasshouse Tree- first time trying to name it even though its been in the mind for a long time. A tree adapted to cold climates and grows huge thick translucent foliage that it surrounds itself in to create its own greenhouse. Not found in the wild as much as Snow Candle but is definitely a plant of choice for those trying to settle into a place in cold climates as a way to grow food out-of-season.

Bladdernet- maybe I should call it something nicer like Networt or something. The most exotic of carnivorous plants. It's a supersized Bladderwort where its bladders have grown to be more like fish baskets. Domestic forms are more common and are used to trap fish for food in coastal/oceanic and lakeside settlements. The scraps from gutting the fish are often given back to the plants for nutrients in exchange.
