💛 Reunion Kiss/Relief

Jackson's an interminably long board meeting when it happens, trying to make sense of the world's most boring financial presentation, so he doesn't immediately notice the news bulletin popping up on his phone. It's only when they start hearing voices in the corridor and someone runs past the board room window that they all start to realise something's going on, and Jackson suddenly catches sight of the blinking red notification on his phone screen.

"Multi-car pile up," he explains shortly to the board, already on his feet and heading for the door, scrolling down for more information. "I'm guessing we're the nearest hospital - it's gonna be all hands on deck, so if you're qualified to hold a scalpel, get down to the pit."

(Frank, still holding the clicker for his presentation, looks thoroughly relieved that his only qualification is in accountancy.)

Halfway down the corridor, Jackson stops dead. A cold shiver run down his spine and it feels like his stomach has dropped out of him entirely as he sees the location of the accident. That's April's route to work.

Immediately he brings up her number and dials - but it goes straight to voicemail, and he wants to be sick. He shoots her off a quick text and then tries ringing again and again as he heads down to the E.R.

Each time it goes to voicemail.

He tries to tell himself not to panic. The phone lines are probably horrendously busy with people trying to contact emergency services or friends and family to make sure they're alright, and April not answering might just mean she's not looking at her phone. She's probably trying to help, if she is near there.

He tells himself that, but all he can think of is Ben calling him, telling him he was going to have to perform a C-section on April in her kitchen, of April quarantined behind glass, of watching April on the operating table of Grey-Sloan.

(How much luck can one person have?)

"Pick up, damn it!" he shouts as her voicemail message plays again, and a nurse passing jumps in fright.

"Dr Avery? Is everything okay?"

"I'm sorry, I'm just - I'm worried about my wife."

The word slips out automatically, and it's only after he says it that he remembers that, technically, April isn't his wife any more. Because he was stupid enough to divorce her. They're not even dating, despite the fact that they've been living together since they came to Boston, are raising Harriet together.

And yet he never really stopped thinking of her in that way, did he? Even when they were separated, when he was dating other women, when she was marrying someone else, he still thought of her as his.

"Has a woman called April Kepner been brought in? Late thirties, red hair?"

The nurse shakes her head. "I don't think so - not that I've seen. I'll check for you."

She scurries away, but before Jackson can follow or try to ring April again he's stopped and asked for a consult, and then another, and another, and then he gets pulled into a surgery and loses all track of time.

The whole way through he's repeating silently, Please, God. Please let her be okay. Please let me get another chance. I promise I won't waste this one.

His faith still isn't as strong as April's, he doubts it ever will be. Half the time he's not even really sure what it is he believes in. But it's comforting to pray, whether anyone's listening or not.

When he's finally finished and comes back out into the corridor, he immediately pulls his phone out. It's been nearly five hours, and there's still nothing from April. He wants to scream.

And then -

"There's no signs of internal bleeding, but get a CT scan just to be sure."

He spins round, his heart in his throat. April's just coming out of a patient room with an intern; she's in jeans an a tshirt instead of scrubs, dirt and what looks like splashes of blood staining them, her hair scraped back and a band-aid on her forehead, but she's alive and whole and the most beautiful thing Jackson's ever seen.

"April?"

"Jackson, there you are!" Her face lights up as she turns and sees him. Relief crashing over him, he starts running towards her. "I tried to find you but they said you were in surgery. I came with one of the -"

He cuts her off by pulling her into his arms and soundly kissing her. How she got here doesn't really seem to matter any more, just that she is here and uninjured.

She lets out a little sound of shock, and then melts into him the way she always has, her hands coming up to clutch at his scrubs. The feel of her lips is achingly familiar against his, and he rains kisses down on them, one after another, trying to make up for every time he should have kissed her but didn't. And his heart sings as she lifts herself up on tip-toes and kisses him back, meeting each stroke of his mouth with one of her own.

Finally he pulls back, but only enough to rest his forehead against hers.

"You weren't answering your phone," he says quietly.

"I was doing triage at the scene, and then the battery died. I'm sorry."

"You're alright?"

"Totally fine. I promise."

For the first time since he saw the notification on his phone, he starts to relax.

"Dr Avery?" Glancing up, he sees the nurse he was talking to earlier at the end of the corridor. "You found your wife, then?"

Jackson looks down at April, who's smiling knowingly up at him, a warmth in her eyes that gives him the confidence to reply, "Yeah. Yeah, I did."

The RAIN was heavy, and it pounded the roof of the barn as if it was a drum. At least it provided SHELTER for the two drenched teens. Unfortunately, they got caught in the middle of the storm and were soaked to the bone from the run. Clothes clung to their form, their hair was plastered against their head, and grass shavings were glued upon their pants. So much for their Valentine’s day picnic, it was left behind and most probably soaked. They would have to clean it up after the rain slacked off.

As frustrating as it was, they could either do two things: Sulk or make the best of the situation. After Ben flicked the overhead heaters on, he decided to do the latter. There was a radio he kept within the barn that he used, and he flicked it to their favorite song that they love to dance too. The volume had to be turned up louder than usual, or else the rain would’ve drowned it out.

But the farm boy didn’t care if they were both drenched, he PULLED in his girlfriend with a bright smile. He laughed. They both looked ridiculous but hey, it was just the two of them anyway. “I hope you don’t mind a soggy dance. I know it wasn’t in our original Valentine’s Day plans, but I guess we’ll just have to roll with it.”

valentine’s day meme !!

SHE LOVED VALENTINE’S DAY. It was of no surprise to anyone that, two days ago, she had been talking the ear off about all the things she wanted to do with Ben on that day. Some of it were things they USUALLY did - Valentine’s Day wasn’t the only day to go big and bold and loving, after all. A few of the other ideas were n e w, just to use the day as an excuse to try something a bit unique. Something to still share their love and passion for each other in… but then the day before had come, and the fever hit hard.

Determined to fight it off, she had gone to bed early. Praying that when she woke up to the sun’s rays in the morning, she would be feeling fine. Yet, as her window burst with golden light, she was still shivering, still achy, and still just as fevered at the night before. She was miserable, and Faith felt her heart begin to cry. All the plans she had made for her and Ben were r u i n e d, and a part of her wondered if she would or should even see him that day. The thought of getting him ill made her stomach twist. Luckily, she wasn’t feeling as though she needed to release its contents, she was just. Not good.

Rolling over, hand was reaching for her phone on bedside table. She intended to let the blond know of her condition, to warn him he best stay away. They could make it all up later, perhaps… Though the typing was slow, wishing this wouldn’t have to be the case. As thumb hovered over the send button, a knock to her door roused her, and she half sat up, though fought to keep the covers on as chills LACED through exposed skin. There was a sense of numbness until she saw who it was entering into her room.

Immediately, smile broke out on her features, heart warming even despite the way her body currently begged for a greater number of blankets. It was her Benny, and a tray in his hand was hefty with a meal. The delicious smells were enticing, even despite her state, and the flowers on the tray added some color to the grayness of her world right then. As he lowered it down before her, she could see the HEART shapes he had incorporated into the meal - the bacon, the eggs, the jam on her toast. It was such a simple thing, but it brought her some meager joy, and seeing him made her day against the earlier sadness that had been pressing at her.

“Thank you, Benny Boo… I can always count on my Valentine, huh? I’d kiss you right now, but you probably don’t want icky, sicky Faith germs…” A soft giggle, though she did twist in her position to headbutt him gently. Then hand would raise to blow a kiss. Not quite as romantic, but it would do.

things you said in the waiting room (ben to faith)

There was no marathon, yet his heart raced as if there was one. Here he was, sitting on the edge of his chair but the very thing that kept the blood running through his body was miles ahead of him. The soft drone of the TV that played in the waiting room brought no comfort either, in fact the thoughts that swarmed in his mind tuned it out.

Faith had went down during the big football game, her medication not holding up as well as it used to. One moment she was cheering on the players and hyping up the crowd. But the next moment she was pale and on the ground. Ben was sitting upon the bleachers at the time, but when he saw her fall, his vision was suddenly obscured by the students who rose out of their seats.

Oh shit - that was his first thought. Before phones had a chance to whip out and spread the news like wildfire, the farm boy started to shove his way to the bottom of the bleachers. It had to be her heart, in fact he knew it had to be it. Did she take her medication? Was her medication working? Did she forget the case by her bedside? When he reached the bottom and pushed his way in between a few other bystanders, he saw her. Well, what he could make of her. One of the medics had come over while her cheerleader friends were frantic.

Faith was already unconscious by the time he arrived by her side. However, he didn’t want to stand there like a lost dog. To pass the time while they waited for the wail of the ambulance, he went ahead and called her mother. Told her to meet them at the hospital.

Now here he was in the waiting room after a very swift trip.

“Your heart needs to stop doing this to you….” he mumbled while the blonde leaned back into his chair, fully aware of the fact that she had no control of the situation. Audience laughter from the tv droned once again, and he looked over to hopefully provide some sort of distraction. Why couldn’t they let him back there now? He would feel a lot better if he saw her awake and alert. The doctor said that she would be fine, but they will be trying new medication to regulate her heart once again….

Shipping Challenge

I’ve seen this somewhere so i decided to do this challenge as well.

1. First Ship:

Peter Pan And Wendy

Peter Pan and Wendy is honestly one of many Disney shippings i remember shipping as a child. I’ve started shipping at a young age tbh. So yeah, i still really love the two of them. They’re cute and aren’t endgame (A favorite, yet painful trope of mine) It literally broke my heart to watch the sequel and see him interact with grown up Wendy...

2. First OTP Ship:

Troy and Gabriella

Troy and Gabriella i think was the first otp i had. I had a phase where i would watch High School Musical 24/7 and especially re-watch the scenes of wannabe Luke Skywalker (Yes i called him that) and Gabriella being in love and all. I really rooted for them and was happy when it actually worked out in the end.

3. Current favorite Shippings:

Oh dear, bear with me...

Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger (Dramione)

I’ve shipped them probably as long as i’ve been in the Harry Potter Fandom. They’re so imperfectly perfect to me that it makes sense. To me. I do understand the hate that it gets but It does not make it okay to bully and harass people because of that though.

Lady Sif and Loki (Sifki/Warfrost)

Sifki of course duh. Also LOOK AT THEM!!! The dynamic and tension between them is amazing. To me, Sifki just displays a ‘what could have been’ situation. I don’t even need Marvel to make them a couple in the future but to confirm that they did have feelings for each other in the past but unfortunately circumstance and faith wouldn’t be on their side. I just need them to confirm that. Just that, and then i’ll finally be able to find my peace.

Ben Solo and Rey (Reylo)

Love everything about it. Enemies to lovers through and through. I do think they messed up in ROS In many ways but now that we’re talking about the Reylo aspect... But yeah– i don’t want to exploit further for obvious reasons...

4. A ship since the first minute:

Susan Pevensive and Caspian (Suspian)

Love everything about this Ship. Like i knew they were going to be the pairing even before they’ve even met. I know they aren’t bookcanon but yuh...

5. A Ship i wish had been endgame:

Peggy Carter and Daniel Sousa (Peggysous)

I really thought it was endgame... but it’s not. I thought these two really where going to figure this out but apparently Marvel had other plans...

6. A Ship i wish was canon:

Katara and Zuko (Zutara)

These two OMG! How could i ever have the audacity to ship her with Aang. (No hate to Kataang shippers, i’ve been one myself ;-) ) These two had so much chemistry it should have worked.

Scorpius Malfoy and Rose Granger-Weasley (Scorose)

Also i got Scorose here because they’re just perfect for each other. I don’t know if they’ve announced them canon or not but i HOPE they do it. It’s just been too obvious in the cursed child.

7. A Ship in the Fandom mostly everyone hates but i love:

Kylo Ren/ Ben Solo and Rey (Reylo)

Again Reylo. XD

Luke Castellan and Anabeth Case (Lukabeth)

A shipping with the same kind of concept of Reylo i guess? Lukabeth was very interesting to me but to be honest, i haven’t read all the books yet so we’re gonna see how this turns out haha.

8. I don’t watch the show but ship it:

The Darkling and Alina (Darklina)

This is all Reylo’s fault haha. No but also it’s Ben Barnes. I got curious...

Amy and Laurie

One word; Obsessed!

9. A Ship i wish had a different Storyline:

Rumpelstiltskin and Belle

That one was clear to me. Rumple and Belle. I really liked them at the beginning but the more and more he began to lie to her and betray her it’s become very difficult to ship them. You know how i like a bit of betrayal (cough* Sifki) But somewhere is a line that shouldn’t be crossed. I really do think they had potential but they overdid it, in a way.

Thor and Jane

I really loved them in the first Movie and i really rooted for them because their storyline was just perfect! It’s the perfect idea for a fictional couple. A Norse god falling in love with an Earth girl? Come on! Genius! But as time went, they’ve just thrown this idea away and Jane as well as their relationship has become irrelevant. I really think they had potential...

10. Favorite Ship that is Endgame:

Hiccup Haddock and Astrid Hofferson (Hiccstrid)

What is it with me and Norse themed Shippings? Anyway Hiccstrid for sure. I’ve grown up with this couple and i’ve literally cried in cinema when they finally married and had kids in the epilogue. Like FINALLY! After like 10 years of waiting they’ve finally did it. In all this waiting i literally forgot that they’ve been rivals to lovers once haha.

11. A ship where the characters have barely even met (or not at all) but i ship it :

Jack Frost and Elsa of Arendelle (Jelsa)

Remember that era where people would write FanFiction about the big four? (Rapunzel, Merida, Hiccup and Jack) Yeah i was there and read them. That’s when i came to Jelsa. I love this pairing so much and they haven’t even met! I literally freaked out when Frozen 2 came out. So many parallels i could barely breathe haha. To me it makes sense... A LOT of sense.

Yeah, that was my list. There are honestly so many shippings that i would have loved to bring into this but it would have been too much. My favorite romance trope seems to be pain and betrayal and death; How Amazing!

No but fr, every shipping i have end in complete misery and leaves me shattered accordingly...

Hey! Welcome! I'm a mess. Just to let you know that up front.

I post screencaps from Criminal Minds (Hotch & Morgan, separate and together, usually) almost every day - if I haven't gotten lazy and forgotten to stuff my queue full.

I write...a lot. I have 1.5 million words (and counting) on AO3 and most of them are about Hotch.

Requests are open, but there are a few guidelines.

Please be patient with me. I've got about one zillion irons in the fire between IRL and the WIPs in my folder already, so if you send a request just know it might be a while before it sees some words.

You can send me your hcs, but please don't ask me to make cool hc lists or anything because I am tragically bad at them. I've tried. I've failed. It's not for me. I love to see what you guys think though, and I love to talk about Hotch and Morgan.

Hotch and Morgan are my OTP. At this point it's a stretch for me to write other CM ships, but I'll go for it if it's Hotch/Blackwolf or Hotch/Will Lamontagne. Other than that, I'll write gen/platonic as long as it's Hotch or Morgan centric. I love to write Jessica Brooks and Sean Hotchner and Morgan's family.

Ada Thorne nee Shelby

How I feel about this character

Just love for her! She is adorable, strong, fierce, absolutely amazing! Ada and Polly are the best developed female character on the show. Mainly, because Tommy can’t fuck them, so they can’t be reduced to his love interest, which is such a good thing, because I love strong women. Makes me weak in my knees.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Freddie Thorne, Ben Younger, Jessie Eden, because Ada is bi, she just gives off that vibe, u know.

Somehow I prefer to read stuff with a female reader for her, more than a male reader for her. Because it’s either Freddie x Ada for me or Ada x female reader.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Lizzie, Polly, Ada and Linda are an amazing combination! She and Tommy have an interesting dynamic as well! I would have loved to see more John and Ada interactions, because they have not such a big age gap inbetween, so I think they are close. Especially after Ada got her child and John got married with Esme. Oh, Ada and Esme would have sooo much fun together. Esme would be like the sister Ada never had.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I think her character changed a lot between season 1 and 2, because of Freddie’s death and also after she joined the business again. Sometimes when I make memes or the alignment charts, I have two icons for her, one from first season and one from third season, because I think she is one of the characters who changed the most through the series. First season Ada would do a lot of things different and more naive than third season Ada. Mainly, because she still believed in communism in season 1 and she somehow lost her faith after losing Freddie. Which is super understandable tho.

She acutally becomes wiser with age... unlike her brothers, who just do the same shit over and over again.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I wished Ben hadn’t died, because they kill her lovers even fast than Tommys. WTF, right?

On the other hand I wished Ada talked some sense into Jessie, to NOT SLEEP WITH TOMMY THE WHORE SHELBY! Because Ada knows her brother very well and I think she genuinely liked Jessie, or she liked her enough to save her from the pain of being Tommy’s toy or pleasure doll.

And I’m still bitter about the way they killed of Freddie... but more about that later...

How I feel about this character

Relationship status: It’s complicated!

Yes, well, I ramble about Tommy’s shit a lot. I know! He is still an intersting character and it’s so tempting to think about his actions in certain situations, but if I would meet him as a person- I would hate him from the bottom of my heart! <3

He is such an asshole all the time and when I first watched the show, I forgave him a lot he did to his siblings, because I was caught up with his good looks and the presentation of him being the good guy who does bad things to survive. But I spend some time to think about his actions and I noticed, he is an awful human being... to Polly, to his siblings, to his lover and actually to everyone. He might think he does all those mean things to archive a bigger goal, but he is just a gambling addict who can’t stop taking risks he isn’t even prepared for.

Shitty things Tommy has done over time:

Forcing his brother to marry somebody, John didn’t even know at that time, to end a feud, Tommy had started himself and only when it was in his favour to end it, he used John as pawn, so he could archive his plan. HOW FUCKED UP WAS THAT? Nobody seems to talk about this. It was fucking awful! And the way he did it was horrible to! Tommy said nothing to John until the very last moment, when they were already surrounded by enemies, so John couldn’t said no. It also shows, that Tommy thinks he is above his siblings. Tommy thought John wasn’t capable of chosing a wife for himself, so Tommy did that for him too. Even when John didn’t ask for this at all!

Destroying Ada’s relationship with Freddie and chasing his best friend out of town, just because... TOMMY WAS AGAINGST HIS SISTER HAVING A RELATIONSHIP. and yet he proclaimes to listen to woman and to give them a fair change. Maybe just not for our dear Ada!

Nobody! I want to see him miserable and alone! Honestly I’m never going to read all these soft!Tommy fics or whatever, because they really don’t interest me. I don’t want to see him happy.

But go have fun people and write and read whatever you want!

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Tommy and Lizzie, because they have a sexual relationship, which is not based on romance and I love this sad and depressing dynamic between them. It’s so interesting to write and read about.

Tommy and Ada are great in the show. I love their talks and Ada actually points out when Tommy is acting like a douche again.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I have a lot... where should I start?

I get so annoyed, when I see Tommy shown as a twink, because the actor is just 1,70m... which is not small to me. I know a lot of men around that height and I think they are average and not small. Also a lot of men feel bad for not being tall enough, because everywhere in our society it’s normal to have a tall man and a small woman. And the way tall man or small man are sexualized in this alpha/omega thing or in a top/bottom dynamic is so... meh. It’s really uncomfortable to see how people try to push the patriarchal man-woman dynamic into same-sex relationships.

Tommy is a class traitor and a horrible husband.

Man, I could rant for hours, but I stop right here. Just remember, please don’t feel attacked, I don’t mean to attack you. Even if you write or draw... whatever with Tommy, I would never say something bad about this. Enjoy creating Tommy content, I will love to ignore it!

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I was so disappointed when they killed Freddie, because those two could have had an interesting and compelling relationship. Freddie could have been a great frenemie. I put this here and on on Ada, because their marriage wouldn’t changed the plot as much as Freddies and Tommys friendship. Tommy would have been a way better person, if Freddie was around.

John Shelby

How I feel about this character

MY HUSBAND! I love him and he has never done anything wrong in his life.

Nah, John has many faults, but I still adore him as a character, because his faults are actually making the plot more interesting. I also read, that he and Tommy fight a lot, because John is more moral and has way more integrity than his older brother. It was just hinted in the show, but I love this side fact and I will base my whole characterisation this.

I love to write, draw and read stuff with him. He is my favorite character from Peaky blinders and my love will never die, even though he did.

Funny tho, when I first watched PB, I adored Tommy and was annoyed by John, but as I rewatched it I changed my mind about those two.

He had so much potential and I would spend all my money, which is not much, but the devotions counts, to see a spin-off with just John and his army of children.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Esme, because they are sooo cute together!

My OFC, because I love writing them.

Any reader, because I’m a sucker for John.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

All kinds of interactions with other characters and John are great! My favorite is John and Ada to be honest. But here are other dynamics I adore as well:

John & Arthur (they come to the garrison to drink and play cards, they talk a lot about their problems, deep bond here)

John & Tommy (in my head they are always fighting)

John & Lizzie, because they have a great friendship, and they helped each other a lot. She spend time with the kids and he gave her financial support, so she would quit her job, which she didn’t do, because she feared being all alone again, and she has trust issues) (I’m actually writing a fic about these two)

John & his kids (I’m soft for dad!John)

John & Michael (especially in season three, because John seems to be jealous of Michael)

My unpopular opinion about this character

John is not completely stupid. Well, he is certainly not smart, but he works in the betting shop, and Arthur does not, or not really, because Arthur is bad at math... John at least knows his numbers. And also Tommy chose him to be the legal bookie over the others, so John must do a good job there. He just never got a degree or something similar like Michael. Which is also a reason, why John seems to be bitter about Michael joining the business. Michael was put in a higher position than he did.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

This one is obvious... John should have survived.

Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I do! Not all of them, because that's something I don't have the energy for. (Fic writers who do respond to all comments—I have the greatest admiration for you, and also how the hell do you do it.) I always respond if it's particularly thoughtful or insightful, and I'll usually respond if it's a joke. I don't bother for an emoji or an 'I liked it.'

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Ehm... I don't really do angst. I do have something in my WIP folder that'll end pretty angstily if I ever get around to it. I think my anonymous Narnia or VLD fics? Maybe the anonymous Silmarillion one?

Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you've written?

Not as real fic. As not!fics on tumblr? Absolutely. I'm going to go with the fmab/TPM crossover, because that's the silliest one that comes to mind immediately.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I've only ever received "hate" once, and it was the funniest comment I've ever read (not intentionally, unfortunately for them), so I have it screenshotted for when I need a good laugh.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Yes, primarily pwp. I think that emotionally-driven smut that functions as a device for a character study is some of the best, most compelling smut out there. Unfortunately, my smut writing interests lie in a different direction—a hornier one.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of, but now I feel like I should go check.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! Smoking_breath did a russian translation of Paternal Relations!

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope. I'm a bit of a control freak, and very particular about style to boot, so there's really only ben one time I've considered it and it was with someone who I was sharing a braincell with.

What's your all time favorite ship?

Oof. I don't really do OTPs, so I don't have an answer for this.

What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

I hesitate to say never, because there's always a chance I'll come back to it, but I have a Princess Bride AU in my WIPs folder that's nearly done that I probably won't touch. (It needs major rewrites, but I do like the premise, which is that Buttercup decides to vent all her grief via grabbing a sword and whacking at things, so who knows.)

What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and humor! I think I've got a really good hold on how to pace writing so that jokes land really well, and I think I'm also pretty good at figuring out where to put dialogue tags and such so a conversation proceeds with the pauses where I want them.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I really struggle with anything character driven. (For context, the last character-driven thing I tried stopped at 20k, but that 20k took me several hundred hours of writing time.) I don't know why that is, but I do know that writing something character-driven is like wrestling with a sugar-crazed five year old covered in oil, and whatever comes out inevitably needs major rewrites. I get a little better every time I try, though! Maybe in thirty years I'll actually be able to do it without giving myself a headache every time I open the doc.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Unless I know the language, I won't do it, and even then I think it can be really dicey. A lot of the time, a foreign language will take me out of the reading experience—not just because it can be hard to understand, but because the author has no idea how people actually use a second language. A really good example of that (and the one I see the most) is pet names.

Unless it makes sense within the context of the characters (e.x. two characters that share a heritage using a pet name from that heritage's language as a means of connecting to each other), I find pet names really take me out of it. I have never in my life been speaking English with someone and then called them a pet name in Hebrew (which, even though I'm not fluent, is the language that I've been called pet names in by my family and is the language I'd use for a pet name). When someone switches languages mid-sentence just to call someone a pet name in a language they don't know, it can read as a little... odd.

Foreign language use gets even dicier when I do speak the language and I can tell that the author doesn't. I've put down fics because they had no clue what they were doing with the Hebrew or the French. If your character is supposed to be fluent and they're making mistakes with gender, then I'm not going to be able to pay attention to the actual story and will instead be trying to format a comment in my head to tell you in the nicest way possible that your grammar is wrong.

So: I don't use it in my fics. I think it can be used to great effect when done right (see: insight into a character's relationship with their past, heritage, etc. (also for comedy, because there's nothing quite like "can you hand me the—the—fuck. The סוכר?" "the sugar?" "oh my god it's the same fucking word in english.")), but on the whole, I'm iffy about it.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Technically Avalon: Web of Magic, which I did in fourth grade with a friend. We didn't know what fanfiction was though, so I'm not sure if it counts.

What's your favorite fic you've written?

I'm quite fond of Smoke Raised with the Fume of Sighs right now, but more as something I'm enjoying writing than something I'd like reading. It's my first real foray into posting as I go, and it's the first time I've done chapetered fic in a while. It's also great fun, character-wise.

Other than that, I still very much enjoy Paternal Relations. It's got some fun lines.

4. In your eyes, what is their biggest strength?

answered that one! But I'll also add that the love he had for his family is something that I love to read about that I find to be a big strength. Each of his kids thought they were the favorite child and to me, that means he and Julia are doing something right when all of them felt equally loved (I still think it was Nellie tho lol)

6. In your opinion, what is their biggest flaw?

He just had this knack of trusting the wrong people. It's like alright Grant, fool me once, shame on me but fool me twice...shame on you. I wouldn't say it's...naïve, but I think honestly a lot of times he thought that other people had the best intentions like he had with things and that was just not the case. He should have had a bit of a skeptical eye towards some people (looking at you Babcock!) and put his faith in them for too long.

I mean, if you're looking for a big ol mistake he always regretted, hello General Order Number 11. Julia called it an "obnoxious" order in her memoirs, which is putting it kindly. There's a great book about it here that I would recommend. And while I think it's good that he tried to make up for that order, I think it's still something worthy of discussing.

and I'm not gonna even talk about the "drinking" cause I think people blow it out of proportion and everyone always talks about it sdfghjk drives me nuts!

asdfghjk this question is so silly and fun, y'all know...I mean, the big obvious OTP is Grant and Julia cause they were just....the sweetest fucking couple in the world. Tooth rotting adorable. They just loved and respected each other so much, I mean get me a fucking relationship like that

but I MEANN we can also talk about Grant and Sherman...cause of course :) waxing poetic to one another and Sherman declaring from the mountains that he was Grant's best friend. I mean, come on now!

Grant and Lincoln as well! They knew each other for a short period of time but they seemed to really respect each other....Grant was very upset when Lincoln was killed and regretted not going to the theater that night

I'm also very partial to Grant and Longstreet...friends from West Point, related somewhat through marriage, bonding again after the war...I think we would know more about their relationship if a lot of Longstreet's papers didn't burn in this home. Cause I imagine if Grant wrote him letters, he would keep them. Cause he always gushed about Grant

As the bodies pile up, Clara doesn’t realize how close she is to her goal until it’s too late.

Because her connection to The Force is much weaker than her brother’s, Snoke deems her useless. But her skill with a lightsaber is undeniable. Caught between not wanting to abandon Ben and not knowing whether her parents would let her come home, Breha tries to find her way in the galaxy. Her answer may come when Ben comes back to her with a cut open face and word of a girl from Jakku.

This story follows first Elaena, then her niece Helena as they try to keep their family from falling into oblivion as Kings and Queens rise and fall around them.

Despite this, a new generation of Guardians begin their training as young children so that they may take their place when they become adults. This group navigates their way in a world that is increasingly dangerous for them.

[this started as a story I wrote exclusively for my friends when I was 14 when dystopian YA books were at their height. It’s basically a giant “Found Family” story.]

A group of friends try to survive after most of the western United States is wiped out. In the ruins of a civil war-torn America, they help rebuild a new community all while wondering whether the apocalypse of their religion has come to pass.

Juliet Immortal (2011) Review Part 3

In which Jay attempts plot twist after plot twist, and retcon after retcon, cheerfully saying “Fuck you” to R&J and any reader who likes them, and me saying "Fuck you" back. Spoilers, of course.

How. The fuck. Is it still Romeo’s fault??????

Well, yes, he still betrayed her to the Mercenaries for no good reason, true. Still, though, you would think she would lay off the guy once she realizes that yes, she really did kill herself!!!

*opens mouth. Closes it*

Romeo “I am a pilgrim to worship this saint” Montague, not realize the gift he’d been given??????? As if he hadn't been as fully committed to Juliet as he to her!!!!

Also, the very fact of Juliet spending literal centuries hating him and nursing a grudge against him instead of moving on to other people…honey, I don’t know what to tell you except that it may not be hate you’re feeling. Just saying. *coughenemieswithbenefitscough*

“Hey, what if…Juliet Capulet wasn’t the stupid and naïve girl we think she is???? What if we went easy on her for once?????” Fuck you, book. Lay off my sun saint maiden.

This would never happen in canon, not even in an alternative reality! Not only that, but why the hell is Juliet even in the tomb and faked her death in the first place? Why is Benvolio randomly there? Why the hell did Romeo get Ron the Death Eater’d so badly????

Gotta love this tendency of the book to call itself out on its own plot holes, as if even it knows it’s bullshit. And by love I mean hate. There is no way Romeo wouldn’t recognize his own cousin, and fuck you to the book for even acknowledging it!!!!

Fuck you too, book.

To Conclude

So despite my wangsting, this isn't the badly written disaster I have experienced before re: published R&J fanfic. It zipped along nicely, it was entertaining, and the prose didn't make me want to stab my eyes out. The author didn't attempt the early modern English lingo, perhaps wisely, because then I would have gone postal, and the magic system really was just horribly done magic realism. All in all, this wasn’t a total embarrassment to read.

That said, this book is a big “fuck you” to anyone who likes/loves Romeo as a character and R&J as a pairing and hell, even R&J the play. If I had to tag it on AO3, it would be as a total hate fic. R&J are horrendously OOC even for this alternative reality. The Ben/Juliet pairing is much more shallow than the R&J one, yet treated as the “superior" ship. The ending in which Juliet time travels back to her own time to the tomb and Benvolio finding her and telling her about Romeo/Rosaline is an awful deus ex machina and a slap in the face to anyone with two brain cells to rub together. It is as if the author read the play once in freshman English, hated Romeo with the passion of a fiery suns, and thought, “Why can’t Juliet be with someone like Benvolio, he seems cool.” And that became her spite OTP for her fictionalized anti screed.

As for the Romeo slander...well, you lot know already how feral I can get whenever bad faith arguments crop up against R&J proper, but especially for Romeo, who gets the absolute worst of the hate, bad faith criticisms, and largely uncharitable and bizarrely resentful interpretations. When I see it in fanfic, published or not, I truly get snarly. Suffice to say, Romeo and Juliet are two halves of the same fucking coin, and to criticize one for being rash and impulsive and overly emotional when the other is right there doing and feeling the exact same things in very similar language and the narrative itself pointing it out...is just sad at this point. That's why I have personally never understood why people dislike one or the other so much; their differences are much more subtle than their similarities, imo. So Jay's insistence on trashing Romeo while at the same time making him act somewhat sympathetically at times (telling Juliet key truths, helping her against the real Big Bad, the Mercenary who made him, still loving Juliet despite her hating him to bits and loving Ben instead) while at the same time giving him a really awful fate just gets my chupacabra. Thanks, I hate it! And what pours salt in this wound is that despite it all, R&J are still more interesting to read about together than Ben/Juliet (!!!). It’s like the Darkling drama all over again.

And then there are actual sequels to this!! How the hell could this author continue this is beyond me. If the author does get some ovaries and even the slightest hint of self-awareness, she would have just made R&J enemies-to-lovers or enemies-with-benefits; I think that also would have made that These Violent Delights book more compelling and fixed the lack of romantic tension between the two leads.

But in sum: If you want a quick read, like nicely plotted and detailed trainwrecks, are not as invested in R&J canon or even R&J itself, and are tolerant of Romeo bashing, go ahead and pick this up. Otherwise, skip.
