Crochet Patterns for Palestine

Making a new post for this; I'll still accept donation receipts from all organizations linked on the previous version of this post, but my focus has shifted and/or concentrated somewhat.

This crochet pattern is for small cats, of a good size to make into keychains, magnets, or even hair clips! There are six PDF versions available:

Between those six options, that should cover most pattern accessibility needs. If you need something else, though, let me know! I’m prepared to offer a .doc or similar file on an individual basis if you need a screenreader to access crochet patterns, and have a sheet I can use to translate things to German stitch terms (though more in-depth instructions would still be in English). The pattern is worked primarily in (US) single crochet/(UK) double crochet, with the ears in (US) double crochet/(UK) treble crochet popcorn stitches, and is bundled with similar file options of a popcorn stitch tutorial PDF (no stitch names used).

Then I started getting more clips of the UK version and ofc have also become a little obsessed with Alex Horne

Then a clip with Russell Howard showed up and I remembered how I used to watch clips of the Russell Howard Hour and Mock The Week

So I decided to watch more clips with him and I found out all of series 6 is free on youtube so ofc I'm currently binge watching it and I'm a little obbessed with Russell Howard too now

I did download with subtitles, the official versions I've found are hardsubbed the same way they are on the Wtfock English channel. Actually, funny story, but I was telling my friend about the stepsister twist last week and she told me about another Belgian show that'd just aired where in the finale there was ALSO a lesbian stepsister twist! How wild is that. Like, what's going on there... Though that was pretty awful in terms of psycho manipulative lesbian tropes, but, the thing I noticed was that those official episodes were also hardsubbed in Flemish, so I guess this is a thing they do there?

Anyway, I use the tool youtube-dl [Edited 2023-10-29 to change link to correct site]. It may require a bit of setup, but there's a lot of help online to get it running.

Then I go to the official site: https://www.goplay.be/wtfock. It's geoblocked, so you do need to be in Europe or use a VPN to get a European IP (UK doesn't count, lol, I happened to already be on a UK IP once and tried, it didn't work).

Then, while the youtube-dl tool will work for a lot of sites by just putting in the URL to a page that has the video you want, for goplay.be you'll want to first open up your browser's Developer Tools, on most browsers that'll be Ctrl+Shift+i, and then go to the Network tab.

Go ahead and type mpd into the filter at the top. Go back to the goplay.be page and click on the clip you want to download, it'll start playing. If you keep an eye on the Dev Tools window, you'll see the mpd request, it'll be called manifest.mpd. Copy the whole request URL and download it using youtube-dl. You can just do that for each of the clips. For example, I was downloading the latest clip today, and this is the request URL:

There are other extensions and tools that no doubt also download videos as you're playing, but I find most aren't free or have very limited functionality.

Warnings: So much fluff. Two sentences of very mildly suggestive content. Sort of spoilers for the new season but not really. You’ve been warned though.

Eddie Munson didn't like the colour green. 

It was the colour of Jason Carver's varsity jacket, the Hawkins Tigers cheerleading uniforms, those godforsaken textbooks in Ms O'Donnell's class, that tree he fell out of when he was seven. It was the colour of the graduation cap and gown he was yet to wear, and the jealousy he'd feel watching his peers walk across the stage and grab their diplomas from Principal Higgens while he sat black and blue in the audience for the third year in a row. It was the colour of the scrunchie in sweet, gentle Chrissy Cunningham's hair the night she was inter-dimensionally mangled to death in his trailer. 

Eddie Munson actually hated the colour green. 

Until he met you.

You walked through the woods by the high school you’d graduated from last year and that was currently locked up for the summer. You caught his eye with a light green sweater with the ugliest pattern he'd seen since Granny Jill's Christmas dinner in '76. Truthfully, it wasn't that bad but dandelions and love hearts weren't exactly his idea of fashion-forward. He’d never admit he found it endearing.

The bag on your back was the colour of pine and Edison Lighthouse's orange Already cassette case was sticking out of the side pocket. You'd painted leaves onto the Walkman clipped onto your jeans and when you passed his lonesome picnic table he heard the clear sounds of Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) blaring from the headphones. A green heart had been shakily embroidered on your back pocket. 

You loved the colour green.

He'd gotten your attention before you got too far and he swears to this day that you stopped his heart when you stared up at him with those eyes the colour of forget-me-nots. You'd smiled shyly at the familiar acquaintance and he couldn't help but grin back. He admired your taste in music and that smile on your face widened. You happily admitted that you didn't think anyone under the age of 40 still listened to Ed' Light' and were glad you had someone your age to share your interest with. Eddie on the other hand was lying through his teeth.

He didn't give a damn about Tony Burrows and his pop-rock posse. The only reason he was able to decipher the tune in the first place was that his radio had broken last August and he was stuck listening to his uncle's old UK Singles Chart tape for a week before he'd gotten it fixed. Now his eye twitched every time he heard the opening chords. He didn't care about someone's girl named after a herb and the love she shared.

Until suddenly you were his girl and you weren't named after a herb but love did grow wherever you went. After that conversation in the woods and the making of plans to hang out the next day, he'd rushed home and dug through Wayne's collection of cassettes and thanked Jesus when he found a yellowing version of the one you'd had in your bag earlier.

He tossed it on the radio and played it over and over until the lyrics to every song were engraved on the back of his eyelids. He's fairly certain that It's up to You, Petula was playing faintly as he shopped for ferrets in a Costco that night in his dreams. The realisation that the songs were actually kind of catchy was something he wouldn’t admit until months later while higher than a kite. 

You’d agreed to meet at the new diner on Kerley and he got there 5 minutes early. He sat in one of the disgustingly mint green booths and swung his feet, fiddling with the cufflinks on his jacket. The ringing of the doorway bell made him look up and he raised his hand to wave you over. Having taken the liberty to order ahead, he pushed two milkshakes towards you.

“I didn’t know if you preferred vanilla or chocolate so I got both. If you don’t like either I can get you something else, no problem.” 

You shook your head, the kind gesture making you blush as you pulled the vanilla towards you. You realised his shake was missing a straw and you got up to grab one. Eddie used the opportunity to take a proper look at your outfit today.

Gone was the ‘ugly’ green sweater and the embroidered jeans. Today you were wearing a black baseball shirt with denim shorts and a wide, green belt. The Reeboks on your feet were rimmed with Hawkins green and they were sickeningly similar to the ones Jason Carver used to wear before he croaked but on you, they might as well have been Louboutins. Your hair was neatly double braided and your beloved Walkman could be seen poking out of your white satchel. You were a breath of fresh air on the muggy summer’s day that was making the leather on his arms stick to him like glue. 

Two minutes turned into two hours and suddenly your bike was being lifted into the back of Eddie’s van as you prepared to take a drive to the quarry and bask in the shade or dangle your feet in the cold water. As you sat on the dead, matted grass admiring the shimmering water, a torrent of rain decided to join you. Eddie was protected by his layers of denim and leather but your shirt was soaked through.

This led to Eddie searching through various compartments of the van looking for a replacement while you insisted, shivering, that there was no need really. A shout of triumph and Eddie pulled out a neatly folded green t-shirt he’d rarely wear due to the colour. He looked away so you could change and when he looked back his heart melted at the sight of you in his clothes. It was slightly oversized and the hue contrasted your hair perfectly. Because of this, he insisted you keep it and refused to let you say no. 

“I don’t wear a lot of green anyway.”

Your eyes widened in mock horror as you gasped dramatically before chuckling.

“I get it. It’s not everybody’s taste is it, Munson?”

He let out a laugh before looking you up and down and then at the floor shyly.

“I don’t know, it’s kinda growin’ on me.”

You flushed a deep red when you understood his words and looked down too, heart soaring at the compliment. That was 3 years ago.

Now Eddie sat on the bed in the apartment you shared together. In his hands was a deep green, velvet ring box with a silver ring inside and in the centre was a small, heart-cut emerald. He asked you to marry him that night and what followed in the months after were some of the best days of your life.

You were married in a small field outside of Hawkins and your hands held a white and green bouquet with three roses folded out of Edison Lighthouse and Corroded Coffin sheet music. You went to California for your Honeymoon and the sage silk robe you wore that night nearly made him lose his mind.

He looked at you asleep on his chest (unsurprising given the actions of the night), your ring glinting on your finger. Inside that emerald, he could see every moment he’d ever spent with you playing like a movie. He thought back to your first meeting and the sweater that made him notice you, now more in love with it than ever. Your shades of green were a stark contrast to his shades of black, adding bursts of colour all over your apartment back home.

Three years ago he would’ve preferred being eaten by Demobats to sharing a home with the colour of Higgens’ pathetic Hawkins High School but now, there’s no place he’d rather be. The ferns that sat in the middle of the dining table and the green beads in your hair on the first day of Spring brought nothing but joy to his supposedly murderous heart.

Might copy and paste the text here later from my Twitter thread where I expressed why I enjoyed it, but I recently read My Little Poplar and ended up liking Bai Xinyu and Yu Fengcheng quite a bit!

Yu Fengcheng’s eventual regret was honestly written really well, and the relationship between the two leads has good chemistry. 👌

Even better is that it features Jian Suiying, who I also have gotten weirdly attached to???

Like objectively the book Jian Suiying comes from, In Love With an Idiot, has its flaws. Or rather, it employs tropes that really aren’t for everyone, which includes the main couple fighting constantly (so it’s basically fighting and then fucking and then fighting and then fucking and you get the idea), and it gets kind of overdramatic at times, as some very angsty-type stories can be—whether they’re from China (known as “dog blood” stories) or not.

I even found it a little silly that so many were so obsessed with Jian Suiying, and yet…

Here I am now, sliiiightly obsessed with him. 🤡😂

It’s just that! As I mentioned on my Twitter, he’s so unique for a shou/bottom/uke character!! Before he met Li Yu, he was always the top, and he’s sexually confident and pretty intelligent and ruthless and…well, temperamental. He does admittedly have a charm to him that works and I find it pretty amazing the author managed to predict that, since so many characters in her novels adore him BDMGIHSKD.

Even his red flags give him charm, because while he is problematic, the red flags make him an intriguing character. The author does a pretty good job at balancing the different aspects of him that make him technically infuriating and yet also compelling.

His charm is further boosted by the fact there’s actually a clip of one of his VAs just trying to cheer you up if you’re sad?? Like hello??? 🥺

It is no longer a surprise to me that Li Yu ended up so obsessed with Jian Suiying. 😆

Also I’ll note now the last image is actually by the My Little Poplar manhua artist while the others are from the manhua adaptation of Jian Suiying’s own novel! I like how the manhua artist draws him quite a bit since it feels so him. I’ve seen fan art and they sometimes feature him smaller and thus not domineering enough, even though they usually show him with the same hairstyle—which makes for a fun tangent on its own since danmei designs can be a bit “basic,” so when one specific design becomes a recognizable look for a character, I find it pretty cool.

In fact, one of my favourite details in My Little Poplar was watching Yu Fengcheng be very frustrated with how much Bai Xinyu looked up to Jian Suiying. 🤭

Also just seeing him show up always made me go “yay!” because it’s so fun getting to see him again, especially as part of his story aligns with My Little Poplar (as in the plots of both novels happen somewhat concurrently).

Similarly, the manhua adaptation, My Beloved Fool, has a really nice art style and I really like that the artist always lets Jian Suiying shine by really dressing him up. He and Shi Qi from Trap a Vicious Dog (another series I want to ramble about on why I’m enjoying it so far) are two manhua protagonists I know of who are like…confident smart corporate bosses that get stylish fits almost every manhua chapter, which is a nice detail ahaha.

My Beloved Fool has recently hit the heavy angst section of the novel so it’ll be depressing to follow for a while since you’ll just watch Li Yu fall apart as Jian Suiying suffers absolute hell. 😔

Someone even uploaded the first season of the vomic version of the manhua on YouTube. 👀

Similarly, I’m really excited for the My Little Poplar manhua to get to all the good bits of the story there, since Bai Xinyu develops a lot as a character and I find Yu Fengcheng’s regret especially well done. But evidently it’ll take quite some time to get there; first we have to get past the military bullying alfndkfjjss.

Anyway the actual reason I started typing this out before I spiralled into another huge ramble asjakfl is that I found In Love With an Idiot and My Little Poplar audio dramas on YouTube!!

I’d heard some In Love With an Idiot audio clips from something that some fans had shared to YouTube before, but it sounds like those clips were from a completely different audio drama than the one I landed on. I’m especially excited about the My Little Poplar one. Even if it’s not extremely high quality (I think Bing Xing Xia Deng aka Inferior by Nature aka The Selfish Gene has admittedly spoiled me because it was so high quality 😆), it’s still fun hearing these characters come to life aurally.

Even more so since iirc I saw a Twitter post saying the My Little Poplar and In Love With an Idiot got taken down officially, so they may only be accessible via online reuploads right now. I can’t find the post to confirm, but if true, I’m glad someone preserved them. 🙏

Update: I did find the other version’s VAs of the In Love With an Idiot audio drama! Except it’s maybe a…sequel? Where a Li Yu of the past transmigrates 5 years into the future when Li Yu and Jian Suiying are a couple?? It’s on MaoEr FM…and it’s for free. 👁️

In fact, I could totally ramble about the Bing Xing Xia Deng audio drama—which I already have for a friend, so I can just copy and paste that long-ass (slightly more incoherent because it’s a lot of fangirling) wall of text here haha. I am currently very obsessed with that series too because it really is high quality and I like how it evolved the novel it’s adapting, but my friend is the expert on it so I feel a bit more shy about sharing my thoughts sometimes.

Welp that went on quite a number of tangents but yeah. I’ve enjoyed these novels and I’m very happy they got audio dramas and that they are still out there to be enjoyed after everything. 🥺💕

OH and final note but…the fun fact about the 188男团 aka 188 Group, which is the overall series Jian Suiying and Bai Xinyu belong to (so-called because it’s 10 novels that share a universe and all feature (scum) gongs of 188 cm) got sort of made into an “actual” 男团, aka a boy band/group! I found the couple (?) songs they released and some fan songs and it’s nice seeing them all “singing” together alfjskfjs.

I had a dream this morning that was a mix-up of a lot of things I've been seeing lately

So there's been a lot of Shameless US clips appearing on my FB feed, and I'm confused watching em cause I'm like, I swear there's more kids in the family than there is in the original Shameless (UK version)

So in the dream, I was living in a building opposite a block of flats, and the curtains didn't shut all the way, so I woke up and there was a guy across the street watching me sleep from his window

And I was like ???? fucking creep! So he scarpered and I got settled under my blanket and tried to go back to sleep

But then I heard a kid laughing and running around, and I sighed, "Liam," which is the name of the youngest kid in Shameless (again, UK version), and I checked the time, it was 5:30 AM

And it was one of those dreams where you already know things, you don't learn the details as you go, but it just makes an appearance as something that feels normal, so for this, instead of us being a family, we were kids in a care home, so not everyone was related (relevant for later)

So I found Liam, he was climbing into a bunk bed of some kids aged 6-7, and they were already awake too, so they were cuddling him, pulled back their covers so he could climb into bed with them and they were having a good cuddle

And so there were no adults around at that point, they kinda expected the older kids to watch the younger kids, free labour and all, so I was sat with them, making sure nobody got hurt running around or climbing things

And we got speaking about a new flavour of Fruit Shoot that had come out, pineapple & apple, one of the girls cuddling Liam said she'd seen a classmate drink it and she really wanted to try it, thing is that living in a care home, we have no income, we don't have a way to buy luxury items that we wanna try, we just have to eat or drink what we're given

So I let her talk about this amazing drink for a bit, like George lets Lenny go on about the farm in Of Mice and Men, just letting them enjoy living out the fantasy in their mind because it's the only way they'll get to experience it

And then Liam climbed out of the bed and took off running again, so I was chasing him, trying to stop him from waking all the other kids up

And he was giggling and throwing cushions and pillows everywhere so I had to stop to clean them up in case anybody got hurt

And by this point, I'm right by a set of bunk beds where the Lads ™️ sleep, they're a mixture of sorts, but the main thing they have in common is that they're tough, bad boys

And I have a crush on one of em, Rydal Keener from The Two Faces of January, (this is where it's relevant that we're not related)

And I'm just trying to hold my own in conversation with them, trying not to make an idiot of myself in front of him, and eventually I move past them, round a corner and let out the most schoolgirl giggle you could possibly imagine

Oh and then I went to the shops and tried to steal some of that drink that the little girl was mentioning but ended up selling my soul to the Devil and from that point onwards, I could only dream about the Devil torturing people and turning them into pork chops

And then I woke up irl and got a shower

Pretty much a summary of the way he acted in my dream

One of the many glitteringly clever quotes circulated in the wake of Hilary Mantel’s death last week was something she said about history. The longer version is wonderful (what did she ever say that wasn’t?), but we’ll clip this bit: “Facts are not truth, though they are part of it … And history is not the past – it is the method we have evolved of organising our ignorance of the past. It’s the record of what’s left on the record.” Yet using these fragments – “a few stones, scraps of writing, scraps of cloth” – Mantel could transport you so completely that you felt you were breathing the air of another century, feeling the emotions of other people, moving through other times.

This has an intense value. And yet, there is a certain type of historian who concerns themself – or himself, let’s face it – very little with emotion, even though that is all anyone ordinary who was forced to live through events was feeling at the time. Anger, shock, hope, bewilderment, laughter, exhaustion, betrayal – these are the trifling human offcuts of some loftier story, largely unmentionable byproducts of the grand machinations of greater men than them.

I’m glad this isn’t an affliction suffered by the documentary maker Adam Curtis, perhaps the BBC’s last great maverick, whose landmark series on Russia between 1985 and 1999 arrives on iPlayer in two weeks. Last year, Curtis was handed a treasure trove: every piece of raw footage shot by the BBC in Russia since the 1960s. Tens of thousands of hours, only the tiniest fraction of which had ever made it to air. Out of this hoard and other material lying in the BBC archive, he has created seven brilliant and deeply empathetic films that cover what happened to Russia between 1985 and 1999 (the year Vladimir Putin took power). It’s called TraumaZone: What It Felt Like to Live Through the Collapse of Communism and Democracy.

The films bring that world right up against your eyeballs, and prove themselves essential to our understanding of the Russia we have now, of the Russia from which Putin emerged, and of the staggering human cost of it all. And, perhaps, of what it feels like on the ground when ideologues with a plan decide to jolt the people towards a new utopia. Anyway, more on the UK’s week in economic shock therapy in a minute.

We already know the historical facts of the Russia story: the hideous iniquities of communism, its tumultuous collapse, the grotesque corruption and betrayal that followed, the vast scale – both ideological and geographical – of the various cataclysms. These films take us from the Kremlin to the Siberian mining villages, from the Chechen frontline to people’s apartments, immersing us in every layer of Russian society. I showed Curtis the Mantel quote this week and he loved it. “I found this extraordinary material – tens of thousands of fragments of experience,” he explained. “What I’m doing is taking these fragments and I’m trying to create a world for you to get lost in, a sense of what it was like to live through that world. At the end of it, I hope you think and feel differently about what Russians went through – and understand how Putin could emerge from that strange cataclysm.”

This I can definitely confirm. I watched the films in early summer, yet seeing last weekend’s mostly female protest against Putin’s Ukraine mobilisation in Moscow, I was immediately transported back to Curtis’s agonising footage of the mothers whose sons are conscripted into the Chechen war. The women in TraumaZone are what will stay longest with me – the struggling babushkas, the sex workers in Moscow’s Cosmos hotel, the state toothbrush factory employees, the reformatory teens, the idealistic first Avon ladies, the extraordinarily charismatic young girl who begs at car windows in the Moscow traffic … the women break your heart.

TraumaZone is a definite departure from Curtis’s previous style. There is no “Adam Curtis voiceover”, no music unless it’s part of the original footage itself, no provocative central thesis. He feels the hot-take industry has swallowed up everything since 2016 – “and I’m one of the worst offenders!” – and what the series offers instead is much more compelling and unusual. You can hear the flies buzzing on the steppes. You are in the middle of riots brutally suppressed by state police. You are watching as gangsters loot cars straight off the production lines. You are in the queue to be told there are still no potatoes in all of Moscow. It’s difficult not to conclude that the hardline free marketeers had about as much empathy for the ordinary people as the Marxist intellectuals.

Which I accept might be starting to sound familiar closer to home. Don’t worry, this isn’t some glib bollocks about how we’re all the same underneath. Russians are not similar to us, because they have been through a totally different experience. In the 90s, they had the accelerated and frequently catastrophic collapse of not one but two of the dominant ideologies of the 20th century. We had Britpop.

Not that that stops some pointed jokes. A Russian journalist who recently fled Putin’s regime reflected sardonically to Curtis: “You in Britain are Moscow in about 1988. Everyone knows the system isn’t working. Everyone knows that the managers are completely looting it. They know that you know that they know, but no one has any concept of a possible alternative. The only difference is you’ve already tried democracy. You’ve got nothing else left.”

Ouch. It has certainly felt like a rather idiosyncratic form of democracy this week, watching a government without a mandate pursue radical economic shock policies on the basis of pure dogma, no matter the forecast human fallout. Over the course of TraumaZone we get to know Yegor Gaidar, the ultra-free marketeer architect of the shock therapy designed to radically remake Russia’s economy, who became despised by the Russians who bore the brunt of his malfunctioning ideals even as the oligarchs used them as cover to steal an entire country. There is an arresting closeup of Gaidar’s face at the funeral of Galina Starovoitova, the democratic reformer assassinated in her apartment building in 1998. What is his expression? Is it a flicker of an epic personal reckoning?

I kept wondering if I saw a flash of it on Kwasi Kwarteng’s face this week, when the cameras followed the chancellor on some no-comment walk out of the Treasury as the financial crisis he caused was playing out in real time. Or whether we’ll see it when Kwarteng or Liz Truss is forced to encounter an ordinary victim who experiences their ideology as a repossessed house or hungry child, rather than something that sounds good in a pamphlet.

But perhaps these are the fleeting emotions we wish ideologues to feel, and not the ones they do. The one thing we can say with a general election possibly more than two years away is that no one but a tiny selectorate of 81,000 voted for this radical experiment. Is that democracy? Is that what keeps people believing in politics? Or are we entering a trauma zone of our own?

I was looking your blog and I saw you posted JOJ's STYDI from his show with Celia Graham but the link is not available. It's still on youtube? I've only found two audios , one of him with Katie and other with Celinde. I cannot wrapped my mind around the fact there is only two of his shows and from his first run when he then went and had a lot of others christines like Katie and Celinde. West End had the worst bootleggers especially when it comes to JOJ.

One of the most famous Phantoms of the 90s, Peter Karrie, made his start in London. He played the role there for over a year from 1992 to 1993. There are no videos of him until he reached Toronto.

Peter Polycarpou, Glyn Kerslake, Peter Cousens, Mike Sterling, and Simon Bowman all played the role of the Phantom for various amounts of times in London. Many of them are very well known actors on the West End and have been in many famous shows. None of them have any videos of them besides maybe a few clips.

Ben Forster played the role in London for about a year, taking over from JOJ. Apart from one clip and a couple of concert performances, there are no videos of him until he went to the Greece production.

Ben Lewis originated the role of the Phantom in Australia's version of Love Never Dies. Despite his enduring popularity, the only videos of him are blurry, wideshot clips of just a few scenes of him.

Scott Davies was one of the longest-running standbys of all time, playing the role opposite over a dozen Christines for ten years from 2019 to 2020. The last complete video of him was as the principal back in 2000. There are no videos of him as the standby beyond minuscule clips.

This is not even counting the numerous other understudies and standbys who have gone completely unfilmed, some even completely unrecorded.

How many videos does JOJ have? Two with Rachel Barrell, one with Celia Graham, half a video with Lisa-Anne Wood, plus four clips of him in the UK tour with Katie Hall and clips of him with Gina Beck, plus various other clips with Christines like Celinde Schoenmaker, not counting the unreleased videos of him with the last.

Did the West End production have a dearth of filmers at some points? Yes. Just like every other production in the world. Did JOJ still manage to get filmed a fair few times? Yes. And do you think some of those other, barely filmed Phantoms also have fans? Because they do! Do they get grouchy and declare West End bootleggers "the worst" for not catching their beloved fave actors? No, we mourn for what could have been but enjoy the little we get.

So maybe you should try to be grateful to those filmers for catching JOJ so many times, instead of bashing on them for not catering to your very specific, JOJ-centric needs that they would not even have known about, years after the fact.

I watched Noroi: The Curse last night (highly recommend) and it was fantastic, very engaging and dark without getting too bogged down in extended scenes of people running around or anything, but I can’t stop thinking about someone doing the ~classic~ thing of redoing Asian horror for a Western audience and it’s. so funny. Like so much depends on it happening in specifically a Japanese context and imagining what they’d come up with to set it in the states or the UK or something like. What’s the equivalent to a shrine here? A church? Not really.. like what the general public is going to understand when you say “demon” is completely different vibes. The hypothetical Hollywood version would, at least 75% chance, go in a totally weird Satanic Panic/pro-life kinda direction. Also a high chance of it being a Blumhouse scary-face-jumpscare kind of deal. So much of the found footage is variety show clips and we don’t. really have those here. WOULD the psychic kids variety segment be replaced by a fake segment from Psychic Kids (yes)

Jenna Coleman on DVD/Blu-ray in North America (June 2022 edition)

Once in a while for the benefit of my fellow Jenna Coleman fans in North America, I’ll do a quick rundown of what TV shows or movies featuring our favourite actress are available in DVDs and Blu-rays - and what are not. In reverse chronological order (drama productions only). Spoiler break to respect timelines:

The Serpent (2021): Has been out on DVD in the UK for a while, but sadly it seems to be an example of a Netflix series that isn’t getting a physical release over here. Doesn’t bode well for her upcoming series, The Sandman though its predecessor American Gods was released to home media, so who knows. (The upcoming film Klokkenluider? Not even going to try and guess that one. The War Rooms hasn’t even started filming yet as far as we know.)

A Separate Peace (2020): This was an online play by Tom Stoppard Jenna did via Zoom mid-lockdown. A one-time shot, it’s unlikely to get any sort of re-release. I saw a copy of it kicking around Youtube for a while but no longer. A review with clips from it can be found here.

Inside No. 9 (2020): There’s been DVD release of Season 5 (including Jenna’s guest appearance) in the UK, but in North America the show isn’t well known so no release here as yet. When the recently announced American remake comes out, will it spark a Region 1 DVD or Blu-ray of the original?

Corporate Monster (2019): Filmed way back around 2010, but held for nearly a decade, it’s only been made available on Youtube. Sometimes short indie films turn up on DVD, though, especially if the director goes on to bigger and better things, so you never know.

All My Sons (2019): The live stream of Jenna’s West End debut play (see above, with thanks to gifmaker @oswincoleman) was delayed until early 2020 for North American fans and unexpectedly got a streaming rebroadcast during lockdown. But National Theatre Live doesn’t tend to do DVD or Blu-ray releases, so don’t hold your breath to see this in any formal release.

Victoria (2016-19): All 3 seasons are available on DVD in North America (I’ve seen box sets of the combined seasons), but there’s no Blu-ray of S3 over here as far as I know. All are also available in the UK. The PBS edits (which include extra scenes in most regular episodes) have never been released, but may still be viewable online in the US on PBS’s website (which can’t be accessed from Canada so I can’t check).

The Cry (2018): DVD release in NA and the UK. Not overly common, but available. No Blu-ray though.

Thunderbirds Are Go (2017): Jenna did a guest voice for the first episode of Series 2 of the CGI remake series. It’s on DVD in the UK, but so far it’s only available on streaming here.

Me Before You (2016): Widely available in DVD and Blu-ray here. Sadly, I tend to see it in Wal-Mart $5 special bins these days.

Doctor Who (2012-2015; 2017): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray. Twice Upon a Time was released on its own if you want her cameo. If you want her extra scenes as Clara (things like the Doctor Who Ultimate Guide minisode and her cameo in The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, you may need to invest in the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi box sets. Good luck finding her DW audio story “The Time Machine” on CD, but I think you can still order a download of it from places like Big Finish (her only other known audio book, The Secret Garden, is also a rarity on CD but I think Audible has it, along with a 2018 audio drama of A Christmas Carol in which she plays a role; it’s not on CD.

Death Comes to Pemberly (2013): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray over here, though I think as with Victoria it’s the UK edit that we got in North America, not the PBS version which may or may note have extra scenes (I’ve never been able to verify).

Dancing on the Edge (2013): Again, widely available on DVD and Blu-ray here.

Room at the Top (2012): I won’t rehash the rights issues that delayed its broadcast for a year and make it unlikely to ever get a DVD or Blu-ray release anywhere, but you can stream it on both sides of the Atlantic.

Titanic (2012): Widely available on DVD and Blu-ray. Just don’t mistake it for that little home movie James Cameron made back in the 90s.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011): It’s a Marvel movie - you can likely get it in 4K too (possibly the only Jenna release in that format). Just remember - she’s in two scenes but you might need the 4K version to see her in the second one.

Waterloo Road (2009): Jenna was a cast member for Series 5, which is on DVD in the UK. North American fans are able to watch her season on officially sanctioned YouTube uploads (still available but with the series revival I’d search for “Series 5″ specifically to skip recent uploads). DVD release has begun in North America by Acorn, but looks like only Series 1 so far.

Emmerdale (2005-09): Not a chance. You can find clips on Youtube but Jenna appeared in more than 400 episodes of the soap and the only soap opera I know of to be released in entirety on DVD was Dark Shadows.

I personally feel that it is preferable this way because people are naturally careless and watching a video on YouTube is much easier than judging something. Of course, there is the added bonus offer that YouTube is a video clip uploading and sharing site, therefore a video will always be more popular than just images or words. Absolutely, many organizations benefit from YouTube. So no doubt they will probably end up on YouTube as part of one's study plan. There is the reality that we can show cars and trucks to a person who lives in another country and so would never buy from us. It's a free service, and believe me, if we have 200 cars online, each getting 1000 sights, 200,000 people will look at what we offer. Of these 200,000 people, some will certainly live far away, but some will also live near you!

Contextual Research into Phonetic Alphabet - ISTD Project

Having settled on the subject of accents, I organised a series of sources as part of my initial research into the phonetic alphabet. I find this interesting because of how it is a way to ensure that words that have been said over radio or telephone are spelled correctly, and that the message has been communicated clearly incase the speech is either distorted or hard to hear.

I have found the UK version of the phonetic alphabet since I am focusing on Britain/London as my chosen field. These set of words have been specifically chosen because they are easy to express certain pronunciations of words. In the first video above, the presenter teaches the phonetic alphabet by saying them directly to the audience. She explained that unvoiced sounds like ‘ss’ and ‘th’ don’t carry well over the phone. Additionally, there are a lot of letters that rhyme, meaning the person listening to the speaker can easily mistake certain letters and words. The phonetic alphabet is then provided when transmitting a message.

Another YouTube video I find really interesting is this clip from the British television show ‘Would I Lie to You?’ The intention of the game is to reveal a fact to the competing celebrity guests panel, and they have to guess whether the fact or story is true or a lie. These statements are often either embarrassing or unusual in order to provide the comedic affect.

In this clip (series 9 episode 5) comedian Lee Mack revealed that he can never remember the phonetic alphabet off by heart, so he invented his own phonetic alphabet based on things that he could see outside his bedroom window. Some his words were really funny; such as ‘h’ for hospital, ‘v’ for a word that he couldn’t say on national television. As a result, the other team correctly guessed the validity of Lee’s statement, in which it was a lie.

In relation to my project, these videos were helpful for me to understand the phonetic alphabet’s purpose, and watching an example of how to create your own phonetic alphabet. Now I have to consider how I can combine and map out the phonetic alphabet and accents in a typographic form.

Useful intro to the history of techno/nostalgia fest for first-gen ravers

A documentary doesn’t always need a mission statement – it can simply be a story well told – but it can help keep things focused. GSGEDM is here to let you know electronic dance music didn’t start with white European dudes like Calvin Harris and David Guetta and consequently to give the ‘true’ pioneers of techno their due.

In this version of the story, it all starts in the early 1980s with three black guys at a largely white high school in Belleville, Michigan, pop. 3,991. Deep in the sticks, it was where their mothers had whisked them to protect them from Detroit’s urban disaster. So here we have the self-assured Juan Atkins, mostly interviewed in ridiculous sunglasses, chatty Derrick May and solid and sensible Kevin Saunderson. 

By the time of a scene-defining photoshoot for the British magazine Record Mirror in 1988, there were three others, although they were never a true collective. It’s soon apparent that Blake Baxter – the only one with pop star/frontman potential – was always the odd man out.

For someone like me who a teenager in the UK at the time, there’s something jarring when the photographer is identified as Norman Anderson, because for us he will always be Normski, the presenter of BBC Two’s Dance Energy back in the early 1990s. 

Talking of which, one of the fascinating things here is the footage of the studio audience dancing to Atkins’ early Cybotron singles on a local Detroit TV black pop show – seemingly nobody deemed this stuff too weird…

As an introduction to this slice of music history, I think this works. As a collection of Proustian triggers – Normski! knowing which magazine was being discussed by the page design! – this also worked for me even though other than Saunderson’s glorious UK hits (songs rather than tracks) as Inner City, this stuff wasn’t really my bag.

But I also found it quite frustrating – so much is brought up and then not explained or explored. That includes incidents within the film – I feel there’s more to the Baxter-May falling-out than I understand, at least. And presumably we’d be past the statute of limitations on stolen drum machines?

Beyond that, though, I wanted to know more about the relationship between the gay and straight club scenes: could straight dudes DJ at gay nights, for instance? And considering how much the Detroit guys talk about what they learned at the Paradise Garage in New York and the Warehouse in Chicago, was techno truly a separate genre or was it just a marketing angle conjured up with the British dude we meet here? 

On the race issue, the film presents the case for and against Richie Hawtin, a big techno star who is white and came from Windsor, just across the border from in Canada. Hawtin is interviewed extensively and argues he paid his dues. Others hint otherwise, but it’s left unresolved.

The appropriation issue is introduced with the oft-used clips of an electrifying Little Richard and a soporific Pat Boone singing their respective versions of Tutti Frutti. But if you’re at a rave or at a superclub, how do you identify the ethnic origin of the maker of the instrumental you are dancing to? I’m not for a second saying that racism isn’t a factor, just that what happened had to work differently than how it had with rock’n’roll, and that mechanism is not uncovered by this film…

One final quibble: very late in proceedings the film mentions that Derrick May – probably the person who gets the most speaking time in GSGEDM – has been accused of sexual assault by four women, which he denies. This should have been brought up earlier - the film feels complicit holding this information back from us.
