A coffin stands out in the middle of the emptiness. Hexagonal in shape, dark in colour. Malleus takes a pause at its side, as if to take in the details, the beauty and intricacy of the pattern that adorns its lid. But the truth is that every part of it is etched into his mind so deeply that he'll never be able to forget it, even if he wants to. How many years had passed since the coffin had been entrusted to him? So many that Malleus has lost count. Placing the palm of his right hand on the bluish-green section, Malleus chants a spell, softly and reverently. Almost immediately, light begins to emanate from it, flowing out to fill the pattern like water filling an empty river. The lid fluoresced from top to bottom before disappearing completely, revealing the inside. A body. A person with a serene, undisturbed expression. Malleus takes a step back as Lilia moves to his side. Together they stare in silence. This, too, is a sight as familiar as the coffin itself. The thousands of rose petals that cushion and surround the body give off a faint scent, a scent of long-forgotten memories. Malleus reaches out, brushing aside a petal resting on the temple. The silence finally breaks as Malleus speaks, his palm resting on the face, barely touching it. "You're right, Lilia. All we can do is keep the end of our bargain. To keep him safe until the promised time comes. As long as he's bound here, so are we." Then, brushing his thumb gently over the closed eyelid, Malleus whispers. "Isn't that right, Ace Trappola?"

I was surprised to find out that the last time I made sprites was in late December 2022. That means I didn't make any for the entirety of 2023. No wonder I felt so out of practice...

There are many things I thought I wanted to share during the process of drawing. Now that it's time to let those thoughts out, they seem to disappear suddenly, haha.

Author's Notes on Part I

Massive thank you for everyone who has read, gave a kudo, and left comments! I didn't plan to divide the story into parts, but as I keep writing, I came to realise how lengthy it is. It's only because of your support I can write to the end of pt. 1 ❤

In the meantime, I'll be taking a long hiatus to work on other fics.

For some readers who might not know, Ace in Wonderland initially started as a project in RPG Maker. I have lost the original game file by now, but still have the recording of a playtest.

The fic initially started as an overambitious project that combined three franchises (Hetalia x Twisted Wonderland x Mahoyaku) at once. I have tried my best to disentangle Mahoyaku, with the characters have been reduced to NPC and whatnot, but you'll still find many traces of it here and there. I apologise if this is a hindrance to your reading experience 🙏😭

I've made references to the original Disney movie from which Twisted Wonderland is based off, but they're not so explicit most of times.

Example of said references: the long-fall, the live flowers (tiger lily), and the Jubjub bird are from the original Alice in Wonderland. Poison Apple and the curse that makes one fall asleep are from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The losing-voice is from Little Mermaid. Etc.

The involvement of real life people/organisation is intentional. A short note will always be included for clarity's sake. For example: the mention of Cult of the Supreme Being
