You know when a book is so good it feels like watching a movie? Dune: Part 2 was so good it felt like reading a book. I love how much care was taken in introducing us to fremen culture and their beliefs.

all of the most important women in pauls life being the only ones not kneeling before him in the throne room scene. not chani because she refuses to bow before what he represents. not irulan because she is a princess royal and bows before no one even as her house crumbles around her. not jessica because she made him she made him into what stands before her now and by extension not alia who has loved her dearest brother from the instant she became aware and who will rule in his stead one day

dune part 2 really is one of those films where everyone is like "this is the best thing ever" and you're like "it can't possibly be" and then you watch it and spend 2 hours and 46 minutes understanding why paul atreides has a cult the size of a planet

My partner’s thoughts on the walrus-fairy discourse:
“I think of it this way. If I hear a knock at the door and it's a fairy, I can initially convince myself it's some sort of projection or fancy tech illusion. And if it turns out to be real, well I guess I just didn't know they exist and all I have to do is expand my world perspective to include the existence of fairies. I've learned of the existence of plenty things I once thought didn't exist. Someone once told me Zebras exist and young me went "cool, when horses have stripes they get a different name. I can accept that".
“But if it's a walrus I need to confront the idea that a walrus traveled all the way out of its natural habitat, or maybe a zoo, and came across LAND to KNOCK on my door without HANDS, and on the way it either opened or leapt over the GATE to my front door. Instead of expanding my perspective, I need to shift my understanding of what a walrus is. And if walruses are capable of so much more than I thought, how many other animals have I been underestimating? Are seals going to come knocking next? Are whales just almost getting caught in the act of something when they get "beached" and they have to accept death for the sake of protecting whale society from being discovered by humans? What other talents do walruses have that have been hidden to me and society? This experience has only begun to unravel the thread of this revelation. Coo-coo-ca-choo, motherfucker.”

“Kaz, look,” she says, barely above a whisper, but silence reigns now and he hears her loud and clear. “It’s a girl.”
He goes slowly to his knees beside her, one gloved hand rising to cover his mouth as he looks at the baby. She waits, for what she doesn’t quite know. For him to speak, for him to leave. After a long moment, his hand drops from his mouth, landing with a dull thump on the bloody sheet beside her hip.
“Inej,” he rasps, and his voice is strangled, like it’s an effort to get the words out. “What have we done?”

“there’s a story my aunt told me a very long time ago. i can’t remember all of it, but i remember the way she described the hero:
‘he had a golden spirit.’
i loved those words. i made her read them again and again.”

I’m reading the Hobbit again and when the elves were singing to Bilbo and the dwarves all I could think about was how funny it would be to see some of the elves in the First Age merrily singing that song. Maedhros is not amused.
