deleting old photos
8 hours
& still no rain
the sun reddened through
the yellowing blinds
one summer night
waiting
for droplets to bead
on her window

back in town, volume 1
the motel was surprisingly well lit
I rolled into a crooked parking spot as I blew the last of my smoke out the window
it was mild with more salt in the breeze than last year
the women behind the counter had surprisingly horrible posture
& a chuck missing from her heart
as far as I could tell anyway
'got any vacancy tonight, ma'am?' - I slurred
'if only you people could read!' - she blundered at me
not making eye contact at all, she sipped her aperitif
we exchanged details and I made my way to my room
no luggage this time
I wasn't a particularly smart man, but I knew what I wasn't looking for
I decided to skip a shower and just lay down in todays mess that I had made
my eyes were glazed over peering through the blinds into the parking lot
I grabbed the pad and pen by the night stand
'if you don't become the ocean, you'll be sea-sick everyday..'

transgression
remind me
how did the sun
fall into shallow shores?
rising with the tide
salt bursting from its beams
breathing fire from my core
burnt to a crisp
a deep kiss
on porcelain skin

tuesday night (at panera)
we were served
stale bread
& kind eyes
against the empty vessels
that sat beside me
fill them with courage
because I can't understand their cries
since
that cold, rotten breeze
changed direction

leftovers
cruel winter months
dry hands & feelings
of past lives & time lost
behind me, over there
packing my things
& packing my smokes
for the long haul, for old-times-sake

overcast
from the ground up
I followed footsteps
& shadows
'beware' - the sun bellowed
'I don't have much time left'
eclipsing from the light
oh how desperate I was
to decide which master to serve
while the honeysuckles bloom

freeloader
green winds swirled
the masked man stood near
beneath deep purple clouds
he offered me a smoke
hissing into the wind
he felt at home
rubbing against my chest
shedding the last of his skins
before he seemed to slither
off the rails & into the distance
we embraced, exchanging half-smiles
knowing that I couldn't hide
much longer

the karaoke bar
I always found
black & white pictures
to be most sincere
against an all too colorful world
maybe it was just me
tone deaf, singing the blues

from the cigarettes' perspective
..after sex
burn me to the ground
one after another
uncross your legs

God's fish tank
light melting from it's peak
sunbeams & clear skies
cool blue scales shine
brilliantly, splashing between breath
& clipped wings crash landed
to return i'll find faith
beyond the murky water

dim lighting
for the love of God
on this rainy afternoon
she thundered into the road
with bright pink converse & deep purple lips
I wished her well
she knew what was looking for her

dressed down
lovers
bold in style
charismatic tongue, yelling towards the mountain
looking back
the explosion of her stare
tore through the jagged edges
of my smile, dripping
in leather, in glory

bent
it was warm
the sky was grey, hiding the half-moon
waning, I fell back
I thought I lost you for a second there
her golden eye's matched her dangerous walk
gliding
I'm leaving, only to find you
above the clouds, under the sheets

subtle
A half winters morning brought out my good side
A pale sky and a fat, crisp breeze rolled in
Uncrossing my legs, I decided to light up a smoke
I tried to enjoy what was left of the sun
Running my chapped hand under my beanie
and through a bad haircut
My expression was long and I wondered where my day was headed
I recently quit my day job, it took some liquid courage
but I finally left
Handcuffed to deadlines, clocking in & out, 30-minute lunch breaks
Watercooler-talk, dress socks, and early morning wake ups
It started to get to me
I left without a plan or lack of ambition to find out what was next
Maybe not my best move, but I start smiling again for the first time since I fell off the wagon
I know how that sounds
I wanted to be a writer, an actor, a poet, a painter
But never actual put pen to paper in that regard
A dream can only be a dream without action
I noticed I had sunk further into my lawn chair
I noticed that had no reason to return those missed calls
I’ve fallen into limbo, a long walk on a rocky beach, if you will
Maybe tomorrow, I wondered
I glean what yesterday gave me, I hope for tomorrow's harvest
Laughing with the wind, falling backward in time

too warm to snow, too cool to stare out the window
I’ve been fighting the wrong side of the bed
No matter where I turn over, there it was
Coffee with whole milk, almond milk, half & half
Flavored creamers, sugar, no sugar, too much sugar
Where was the light that faded from my eyes
Leaning over the bathroom sink, my breath fogging up the mirror
The day seemed long, & the moon was half empty
I bent over backwards to see it differently

Warmth
The restaurant was just about empty
A cold draft climbed down my crew-neck, as I read the same old menu, red-sauce stained just on the furthest corner
A long week brought me here, the buzz of a Friday evening has become unfamiliar to me
A water with lemon, a white slice, sweet potato fries, chilled white wine
I'm at the age where I should really start appreciating the little things
Stuck between now and later
I noticed that couple over my shoulder, they seem to be regulars by the look of it
He was gruff looking with kind eyes, she had a bad haircut and really seemed to be interested
I wish I could have heard their words
I couldn't help but pretend I was sitting beside them for the remainder of the meal
It wasn't like the movies, but I knew what I had seen
I wanted to thank them, they showed me so much
I hope I won't forget this.

abscission
there are four-ways to promised land
look in, out, above, and beneath you
all roads lead to somewhere, she said
as long as you still experience the stars as something beyond you
all roads will lead to nowhere
I wrapped my sweater around my waist
and wiped sweat from my brow
as I began to wonder, if the earth ever looks towards the sun
each one of its rays, all lined with grace
look what happens with a love like that
taking the last sips of my coffee, for once
I hum to the tune of the wind, and not the woe
of yesterday
