they'd be like anime rivals except entirely one-sided. membrane would forget his existence five minutes later and doof has declared him his sworn arch rival ("after you, perry the platypus, of course" *understanding platypus chitter*)

#dib is both thrilled and a little bewildered by his new dad #vanessa likes him but does her best to hide that she thinks gaz is the coolest person she's ever met in her life #gaz doesn't care about any of this #zim assumes doof is membrane's estranged husband and tries to get them back together bc he thinks it'll get dib off his back #dib tries to stop him bc. it just feels like what he should do #somehow this results in doof going on a blind date with gir #membrane was also invited on a date (possibly the same one) but mistakes perry for the easter platypus and runs off after him #meanwhile phineas ferb and the rest invent a teleporter that zaps them to irk where the tallest mistake them for off-color irkens #candace tries to show her mom the teleporter but her mom is putting away groceries and candace keeps accidentally un-putting them away #ferb's one line is at the very end of the episode when his dad gets a phone call from membrane and ferb says ''mom's calling''#then it zooms in on him like this is a big reveal and it's never mentioned or referenced again

I mean, the thing about Zim is that despite what he might say, he is absolutely capable of love and affection. It’s just that he only expresses it to a very select assortment of people.

First and most obvious one is probably his relationship with the Tallests. Which tends to be a lot less just a ‘loyal soldier duty bound to serve his leaders” and is coded a lot more like…. “Child overeager to please his neglectful parents”. I mean, the entire emotional crux of ‘Enter the Florpus’ is built on this.

Zim isn’t just motivated by a pure ideological belief in the Irken Empire’s conquest, or by the desire for the fame and accolades that come with being a successful Invader. I mean, those ARE factors. Zim is both a true believer in Irk’s imperialist ideology and very interested in feeding his ego. But he’s also looking for a more personal sort of emotional validation specifically from the Tallests. One that he’s desperate for, but we know that he’s never gonna get.

(And that’s not just because Zim sucks. Even if he could somehow stop being a walking disaster area and a giant millstone around the Empire’s neck, that desire for the Tallests’ love would still be a fool’s errand. We’ve all seen how they treat poor Skoodge.)

In addition to that doomed attempt at an emotional connection, Zim can sometimes be kinda affectionate with his various robotic minions, which obviously goes back to the whole…

Yeah, that.

And that same episode ends with him having a very similar sort of response to Robo-Dad and Robo-Mom picking him up.

And then there’s, of course, his M-Lab Robot Minions in 'Enter the Florpus'. All named - and all grieved by him.

His extreme reaction to Lawrence specifically dying shows he did apparently see them as individuals.

But as far as we can tell both the Roboparents and the Robot Army are not, like, sapient? I mean, AIs like GIR or the Computer are characterized as basically Machine People - but these robots barely seem more sapient than my laptop. And as much as I love my laptop it’s not gonna, like, love me back.

Speaking of GIR, he’s another example of someone Zim shows genuine care for. I mean… he can absolutely be pretty mean to him at times…

But any sort of kindness from Zim has to be graded on a Curve because he’s so terrible. ‘Hobo 13’ demonstrated to us very well just how horrible Zim can be to his subordinates - rude, inconsiderate, pretty much deliberately sacrificing them not just for his personal gain but also just for his own petty amusement.

And it’s notable that’s not how he treats GIR. Who he expresses actual concern for…

And he pretty easily acquiesces to GIR’s capricious desires even when he clearly sees them as Stupid and frivolous.

This scene is especially notable. I mean, this is Zim actually feeling bad about the fact that he made someone cry and trying to de-escalate the situation. Maybe for other characters a moment like that would be no big deal, but this basically the softest Zim has been through… all official IZ media. And it was a scene with GIR.

And meanwhile GIR himself… didn’t really register any of this - either Zim’s frustration or his attempts at sort-of comforting him, because he was only sad about having eaten his cupcake and not being able to eat it more.

Because that’s the thing, while GIR does have some level of affection towards Zim at times…

He doesn’t really show that same level of care. I mean, in pretty much all of these examples, GIR puts his own desire to give Zim physical affection over Zim’s clear discomfort and disgust. And in general, while GIR vaguely acknowledges that Zim is his master - he often disregards or ignores Zim’s orders and requests. And not just when it comes to being ordered around in yet another evil scheme -

But also when the situation is just clearly basically hazardous to Zim’s very life.

(Which is very much in contrast to Zim, who, again, is actually emotionally invested in GIR’s safety)

While some of GIR’s inability to fulfill Zim’s commands can be attributed to his lack of mental focus and general stupidity - his absolute lack of care and regret about these situations seem to imply that, like, GIR might follow some of Zim’s orders when they seem fun, and he might like Zim in the sense that GIR is generally incapable of genuine malice. But GIR is never going to care about Zim, as a ‘Master’ or as a friend, as much as he cares about his own hedonism.

And of course, we all know that if GIR was capable of actually focusing on anything and remaining grounded in reality - he would very quickly realize that he actually hates Zim quite a bit.

And that’s, like, the whole Tragedy of Zim. He is a being capable of kindness and friendship - but he always ends up only caring about beings who will never care about him back.

Due to Irken indoctrination and also self-inflicted due to his own ego (like, it is no coincidence that the People Zim Actually Cares About are the two beings Irken ideology obliges him to acknowledge as his superiors and then a bunch of robotic minions who are supposed to be 100% obedient to him.) Zim only loves those who will not love him back.

Except for Minimoose. That relationship is 100% wholesome.

A venn diagram of the queer/neurodiverse content depicted in Invader Zim. I've already talked about the inherent queerness of Zim and mentioned a few times that there’s a big overlap with autism/neurodiversity but I thought this would make a handy reference. Note that “neurodiversity” isn’t just autism/ADD/ADHD but also includes mental illness, personality disorders, mood disorders, learning disabilities, and anything else that isn’t “neurotypical”.

On the queer side there is actual canon queer rep in the show and comics:

Irkens are canonically aroace and intersex.

Groyna from the comics was confirmed by Eric Trueheart to be a lesbian.

Commander Poki from the comics may be trans, as she has eyelashes normally only seen on female Irkens, but lacks the curled antenna every other female Irken is shown to possess.

Recap Kid's gender is deliberately ambiguous.

There are also many instances of queer-coding that can be seen throughout the show such as:

The homoerotic rivalry between Zim and Dib.

Red and Purple basically being Zim's two gay dads.

Zim and several other characters having campy and dramatic mannerisms.

Zim using Keef and Tak as beards.

Zim and GIR wearing make-up/cross-dressing and generally not concerning themselves with or even being aware of gender conformity.

That time Dib's personality was copied into the body of a female ship which became very distressed at being told it wasn't really a boy and changed its physical appearance to match its brain.

Other queer elements featured in the show include:

Female characters who aren't love interests/show no interest in romance.

Most characters showing a general lack of visible interest in the opposite sex or romance.

The Membranes being a non-traditional family (single dad with no mom, later acquiring two more dads in the form of Foodio and Clembrane). Irken society not being structured around family units at all.

Satirical depictions of nuclear family units (Zim’s roboparents).

Transhumanism.

Kink/Fetish content including tentacles, bondage, domination, tongues, sadism, mind-control, body morphing, gore, food/eating, bodily fluids/fluids in general, Giger-esque designs, etc…

On the Neurodiverse side we have:

Zim’s food sensitivity.

Zim’s germophobia.

Zim’s dislike of being touched or hugged.

Zim seeming to suffer from sensory issues in general.

Zim getting overstimulated on the bus in Walk of Doom.

Zim and Dib infodumping.

Zim’s idiosyncratic speech mannerisms.

Characters having high intellect paired with poor social skills/low emotional intelligence.

Hyperfixations and special interests.

Zim’s struggles with multi-tasking and keeping his priorities straight.

GIR being easily distracted and unable to focus on anything that doesn’t immediately interest him.

Characters having poor volume control.

Characters having mood swings or trouble regulating their emotions.

Zim’s issues with memory.

Dib hyperfocusing to the point of neglecting hygiene.

Zim’s “problem with listening”.

And in the middle where they overlap there’s:

Zim and Dib being outcasts, misunderstood by everyone around them, and only able to connect with other misfits like Gaz, GIR, Keef, each other, and random hobos.

Zim masking his otherness and putting on performative displays of “normalcy” and having a well-founded fear of the consequences of being discovered.

Dib being open about his otherness and looking for respect and acceptance in the face of overwhelming ridicule and contempt.

Dib being pressured by his father to conform in order to please him.

Dib finding that the social benefits of conformity aren’t enough to outweigh the pain of not being his authentic self in Mopiness of Doom.

Dib’s experiences and perspectives being trivialized, dismissed and medicalized as indicators of mental illness.

Dib actually being mentally ill, but only as a result of not being accepted or supported for being different.

The eugenicist dystopia of the Irken Empire, where Zim is labeled “defective” and sentenced to death rather than treated for the mental health issues caused by the society that created him.

Daddy issues/familial rejection/non-acceptance.

Zim and Dib’s struggles with depression.

Zim and Dib’s need to prove themselves to gain validation and acceptance.

Zim and Dib being victims of bullying and in turn bullying others to feel a sense of power.

Dib’s self-loathing.

Zim’s default state being paranoia and anxiety.

Zim and Dib’s self-image issues.

And of course the one thing that binds us all: alternative fashion.

What I Love About ZaDr mostly a rant about one ep cuz i do not have friends to talk to about this so you all most suffer.

They are perfect assholes for each other.

Like they are both miss understood outcast, even the ones who they are to look up to are ashamed of them because the way they think and act on things.

They are also both very toxic assholes who need each other. Like moppieness of doom! Zim gets depression and all his care for his mission just went away! Because Dib did not chase him or look at him. He even went to listen or watch the new with Dib being show and sigh and said so sad hearing his name! He even had papers with dib all over it. Zim even declared he would not become lazy or smoopy because the dib didn't try to chase him or get in his way and he should be able to rule cuz he is zim! yet moments later he goes to lay down on the couch because with no enemies what is the point? Dib getting the attention of his father was a plus for this Ep but also Dib was not that happy about it. He kept being gloomy and not fitting in there as well. Even know he and his father started doing so many amazing things like cure for the common cold! that was a cool detail to learn. But after all of that Dib was still not happy. But was doing it because it made his dad happy They both are in pain not physical but emotionally ! Like We do not see zim get upset much in the show but in this one. He legits cries and ask "Why does thing want to hurt zim" I know you can counter it with the fact he's crying over snacks but Shut Up I'm trying make a point here.

Even in the labs dib wounder where Zim is notching he has not been to school lately then tries to play it off like it doesnt matter. "Does not matter anymore. everything has changed expect talking to myself" i really love that part when dib even admits that he talk to himself which is beautiful btw. Anyways I also Know Gir only wanted Dib to hunt zim again to get the couch back. But even the dumb little guy knew that they are destined for each other! "Listen to me, He needs you Mary you two such good friends" like gir even points out how good they are for each other even if it's haunting and casing each other.

{SIDE NOTE: FUCKING LOVE THE WAY MEMBRANE HAS ROCKET BOOTS AND JUST COMES DOWN TO DIB TO SEE HOW THINGS ARE GOING IS HOT TO ME OKAY}

but also even if dib made a small mistake on the formula and stuff he was working on. membrane noticed it as a cry for help which sucks but, i do enjoy that he realizes his son is not happy and something is troubling him. Membrane telling him to do what ever it takes to fix the problem and dib gets the wide eyes we all fucking love and agrees with his dad, that he needs to fix the problem! "I fell empty inside! This real science bores me to death! Maybe I am not doing what I meant to do! Because what I'm meant to do is catch me that alien!"

Dib realizes at this point after talking to his father, he's only truly happy when he is a full outcast cashing an alien invader. {LOVE THE FACE PLANT MEMBRANE DOES ONCE DIB RUN OUT THE LAB}

The fact they both trash talk each other once dib came into the base and it was more of a playful banter then anything and they laugh as they do so. They seem happy to be by each other sides even if they are enemies.

this is dedicated to my bff Sam who has never seen the punisher and does not have a tumblr, he had a very silly idea and I made it happen

summary: He’s a single dad and you’re a retail worker, need i say more?

As Better off Dead blares from the janky store speakers, you stand behind the counter, folding shirts and tagging merchandise. It’s a busy day today, the stream of teens never ending as you stare at the entrance of your store. You watch the people that walk into your Hot Topic, trying not to lose your mind. Twenty minutes left. That’s all you have to work. Kellin still sings and you swear the song is ten times slower than before.

As you ring out a group of kids a man walks in. He’s tall and muscular, completely out of place with all the emo kids running around. He’s almost scary, the look on his face unreadable. He stands at a display picking up some items and looking at them. Once you’re done with the group of kids you move to greet him, trying to figure out what he’s here for.

You make your way to him, some shirts in hand so it seems like you aren’t just there to bug him. A prayer goes through your head as you wish he isn’t as scary as he seems. You press on, making your way into his line of sight.

“Welcome! Is there anything in particular you’re searching for? Feel free to ask for help.”

He turns to look at you, taking in your outfit and studying your face. His eyes roam over the dozens of pins on your lanyard, reading each and every one. A beat passes as he seems to think for a moment.

“Actually,” he starts, his voice low and gruff. “I was uh… wonderin’ if you guys had any of those… Invader Zim things. My kid loves ‘em.”

His eyes meet yours, he seems to be a little embarrassed. You give him a smile and nod.

Oh! He’s a father! Cute!

“Yeah for sure! We have a wide variety of merchandise, I’ll be happy to show you the section.” You motion for him to follow and stop a few feet away showing him what the store has. His eyes roam over the rack then he turns to you again.

“You think she’d like one of these bracelets?” He asks, picking up one and turning it over in his hand. It’s a cute kandi one, a Gir charm slapped right in the middle.

“Kids love that one,” you reply, trying to focus on the bracelet and not the way he towers over you. He’s close, but you can’t seem to avoid that, it’s Hot Topic after all, there’s like no space anywhere. You clear your throat and nod. “Yeah she’s gonna love it. Besides I think as long as it’s from her dad she’ll love anything you get her.”

That earns you a small chuckle from him as he closes his hand around the bracelet.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Thanks.”

“Want me to ring you up?”

“Nah. I wanna keep lookin’ for a bit. See if there’s something for my boy.”

This time you chuckle. “Ah right. Can’t get one kid a gift without getting the other something.”

“Yeah.” He looks at you for a moment. “You got kids?”

“Nah. Just siblings. Two younger ones. They would fight all the time if one of them got something and the other didn’t. I just started bringing the same thing home for both of them. Less arguing, you know?”

The man smiles, nodding his head. “What can you do, huh?”

He then thanks you for your help and moves deeper into the store, towards the band section. You watch as he goes, feeling a faint blush make its way onto your face. You quickly shake your head, trying to focus back on the shirts in your arms. You turn to restock the section you’re in, folding them neatly and tucking them away.

Five minutes left. Now Dance, Dance blares through the speakers, and you’re behind the register again. As the line starts to clear up, you see the man you helped waiting, glancing at the impulse section.

He picks up a few stickers and you can’t help but smile as he studies them, clearly not getting some of the jokes that were written. His brows are furrowed and he turns it over as if that would help. He puts it back as you finish ringing out a mother and her kids, stuffing their plushies into a black bag.

As she walks away, he steps up and sets the bracelet down on the counter, along with a t-shirt he seemed to find. Before you can say anything, he speaks first, meeting your eyes as he does.

“You were very helpful today. Felt like an idiot when I walked in, y’know? My kids usually come in here and I let ‘em drag me around,” he says with a low laugh.

You smile as you scan his items, making sure everything goes through. “You did great. I’m sure your kids are gonna love this.”

“Thanks…”

“You got a number with us? It gets you some points.” You don’t bother doing the whole spiel, focused on the way he seems to shift his weight as he pulls out his wallet. His hands are nice, you think to yourself as he opens it up.

“Yeah probably. I think Lisa signed me up when she had me buy her that Hello Kitty crap. Uhhh…”

He lists off his number and you type it in.

“Frank Castle?”

“Yeah. Yeah that’s me.”

Frank looks at you and you motion to the card reader. As you finish the transaction, you bag his things, handing it to him. Your fingers brush his and you can feel the heat returning to your face. It’s not noticeable thank god, since the light is a little dim. You don’t know how embarrassing it would be if he noticed.

Frank takes the bag and you hand him his receipt with a smile.

“It was nice meeting you,” Frank says, “You were a great help.”

“It’s my job! Happy to help,” you reply, your voice coming out a little softer than usual.

Just like that he’s gone, a total stranger once more as he leaves. The clock hits 2:00pm. Your shift is over and it’s time to clock out.

I have been struck with inspiration for an Invader Zim fanfiction

One of my favorite episodes of Ninjago is the Season 1 Episode "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", where Jay is infected with a venom that gradually turns him into a snake-person. The episode follows him trying to hide his affliction from his friends while going on a mission/first date with Nya.

I propose an Invader Zim equivalent: "Once Irken, Twice Shy"

Dib isolates a serum from Zim's DNA to show his dad and identify him as the true alien menace he is. Gaz pours it in Dib's drink as an act of petty revenge (like that issue of the comics where she accidentally fed him nanobots and spent the duration of the plot trying to stop him from exploding)

The Irken DNA slowly starts taking over his body, leading to a series of mutations and some juicy internal conflict. Unsure how to cope with the alien influence on his biology, Dib does everything he can to hide his condition while desperately trying to find a cure. He becomes conflicted on whether he should get help, risking his own safety but possibly revealing Zim's true nature in the process; or isolate himself and take the self-preservation route. With seemingly no other option, he turns to Zim for help.

Here's a sort-of proof-of-concept thingy for what I want to accomplish with this premise.

Dib angrily and aggressively knocks on Zim's door. He is wearing a scarf and hat covering most of his big head.

Zim opens the door looking rather annoyed. He's had a rough night.

Dib: Zim, what the fuck did you do to me?

Zim: I'm sorry Dib-monkey but I have no idea what you're talking about. I wasn't planning on tormenting you until net week.

Dib: Don't play dumb with me. There's no way this isn't your doing.

Dib removes his hat and scarf revealing a bright green rash creeping up his neck and a pair of antennae sticking out of his hair alongside his little hair spike thingy.

Dib: Did you poison me? Are you trying to turn me into lunch meat again? Is this some kind of humiliating joke?

Zim stares blankly for a minute. He's not entirely sure what's happening right now. Then he sees the antennae and bursts into laughter.

Gir is probably there too.

Dib leaps at Zim and attempts to strangle him.

Dib: My morning has been absolute hell. I tried to take a shower and now I'm in excruciating pain, these stupid antenna have been picking up high-pitched noises from within a 20-mile radius and it's been giving me a headache, I threw-up my breakfast, my sister won't stop laughing at me, and my dad thinks I'm crazy. I don't know what your game is Zim, but I swear-to-god, if you don't put me back to normal, I am going to tear you limb-from-limb and send your decapitated head directly to the Mysterious Mysteries writers room.

Zim gulps as Dib grabs him by the collar.
