Hello! As I'm not done with LOK yet, my ask only concerns ATLA. I'm curious about your favorite rarepairs from Aang's era. Do you have an absolute favorite, or some that catch your attention?
ATLA rarepairs, huh? Glad you asked!
Toko is my absolute favorite (I'm actually working on another oneshot for them right now).
Also, I do love me some Aang rarepairs-- IMHO, Aang is clearly the most shippable character in the show. My favorites are Yuaang, Maiaang, Azulaang, and Sukaang. (I've never been able to get into Ty Laang or Taang.)
Some of my other favorite ATLA rarepairs include JetLee, YueLa, Songru, Sokkla, and Smellershot. I'm also vaguely intrigued by numerous others, and am generally willing to try new ships.

Imagine how awesome it would have been if Zuko & Katara (Zutara), and Toph & Aang (Taang) ended up together ?!

ATLA sexuality headcanons, part 1, Aang's era:
aang
-unlabelled or pansexual, also incredibly gnc. he/they methinks
-he never questioned it, he never thought about it. the air nomads were chill with everything, so he was too.
-he simply loves people, and he loves them deeply. he's the sort of person who says "i love you" very fast. and he doesn't have a specific type, either. he simply connects with people.
-he definitely had a bit of a thing for kuzon back in the day. kuzon taught him all the fire nation dances he knows, and bumi cheered them on.
-he also kinda digged teo, the mechanist's son, but by that point he already had his heart set on katara.
-as for girls, he DID like on-ji. in different circumstances, they would might have dated for a short while. but with katara it was love at first sight. the sort that makes you giddy and stupid.
-he's a lot worse at rizzing up katara because he is just THAT into her and he keeps fumbling
katara
-growing up, she never really questioned it. she knew she definitely liked boys and never had feelings for another girl.
-she's certainly fully cisgender. happily says “she/her/hers” when asked for her pronouns
-on the contrary, she was somewhat attracted to haru and jet both—and might've even considered zuko in different circumstances. like she definitely felt something akin to attraction in the crossroads of destiny.
-she fell in love with aang, because he gave her hope, he gave her joy, he gave her balance. she already felt SOMETHING in the cave of two lovers, but she was deeply confused and her feelings didn't clear until after the war.
-she always thought of herself as straight but said that, if she had the chance, she would be willing to kiss a girl—as an experiment. she just sort of always admired pretty girls, in the sense of "do i wanna BE her or DATE her,"
-and she's really passionate about feminism, obviously
-she always prefers getting compliments from other women because "they're worth mOre"
-eventually she meets jiang who's such a butch lesbian and questions EVERYTHING
-is that a girl? is that a boy? idk but why are they kinda...
-niyok and nutha both give homoerotic friendship vibes with her (all comic specific characters have the combined personality of one person hence why I'm including both)
-since she was dating aang she didn't explore her sexuality, but she discussed it with him and he supported her
-she considered identifying as bi but didn't feel like she qualified, since she'd never actually dated a girl. aang told her it's okay eifher way.
-at the end she decides to keep it all behind closed doors as per water tribe tradition. she's happy with aang, some girls are hot, it's nobody's business but her own.
-i also completely fw the reading of her as a straight cis girl, but you know
sokka
-bisexual, female lean, and maybe even poly.
-he fell for yue, he fell for suki. he definitely found like, ty lee attractive, but he didn't LIKE her. He was involved with suki, and they hadn't had any conversation about the exact status of their relationship so he wasn't about to fumble it.
-suki and him are both bi. and if yue were alive they'd BOTH be dating her. at the same time.
-zuko was sokka's bi awakening. seeing zuko and suki run around in the boiling rock absolutely changed his brain chemistry.
-he had a hard time accepting it, because of how the water tribes roll. he had a preconceived notion of manhood that he obviously had to challenge alongside his initial sexism.
-but then he realised that 1) his dad had been in a secret poly relationship with kya and bato, and then with bato and malina-- 2) his grandma had a fling with hama--3) master piandao and jeong jeongwere a thing--and 4) his girlfriend herself, suki, was bi. so bro had nothing to worry about.
-his identity became clear to him with suki's and his father's help. unlike katara, he was a bit more open and public with it. being poly, him and suki had many opportunities to explore it, always respecting each other's boundaries.
-sometimes suki does his makeup and he grows to enjoy it. he experiments with gender expression until he becomes totally chill with it.
-big part of his character is learning that he doesn't have to be a “man” in the way that patriarchy imposed on him his whole life
-so like, cisn't
toph
-toph has crushes on boys: sokka, zuko, the duke, satoru, sun, kanto. but i think non of them are really legit.
-toph would also flirt with girls, like, yaling
-had a 'not like other girls' phase
-she/they/he vibes, has a very complicated relationship with gender
-because she was made fun off by other girls as a child, it was harder for her to blend in and talk with them
-she was also raised sheltered within the walls of aristocracy which contributed to her not thinking about it
-she avoided commitment and serious relationships like the plague
-so she's unlabelled and perhaps in the aro spectrum. like, demisexual. but being both demi (aka needing to like someone as a person and getting to know them before feeling attracted to them) AND having commitment issues and a bunch of failed relationships is like, a DEADLY combo.
-i don't know. she is chaotic and not at all skilled with romance so she always fumbles it.
-but i also think she might just be 1000% aromantic whether or not she understands it fully
-i think that's very plausible
suki
-bisexual with a female lean and maybe poly
-big she/they vibes
-she's got endless autistic rizz like girl seduced sokka at light speed.
-in kyoshi island they called the bisexuals 'children of kyoshi' and the lesbians 'children of rangi'
-kyoshi island is basically lesbos if you didn't know /hj
-had her first kiss with mingxia before they decided that "ew, never again, i see you like a sister". she was super happy to meet meilin, mingxia's girlfriend
-DEFINITELY liked biyu and they might have been a thing in different circumstances. Aka if biyu hadn't betrayed her.
-would've dated both sokka and yue if yue was alive. like she would have loved yue. both of them having never left their respective homelands. both of them caring about community and having a duty to their people, a leadership position,,,
-but suki being so badass, liberated, free—and yue needing to sacrifice herself to BE free from her oppressive environment,,, like yue would also admire suki so much?? they would love exploring the world together and it'd put sokka out of a very awkward spot-
zuko
-demiromantic, bisexual. like this boy is SOMEWHERE im the ace spectrum but he's also bi. I'd say with a male lean.
-had internalised homophobia growing up, because, duh, fire nation
-he definitely thought that everyone feels like that when he was a child until his mother told him that this was very much NOT the case
-the gaang made him realise that it's totally okay and since they are all so queer he felt very safe with them
-made gay marriage legal in the fire nation
-made pride a thing in the fire nation inspired by the rainbow fire because i said so
-definitely felt attracted to both jet and sokka in the guy department.
-now, when it cames to girls, mai was his childhood crush.
-he definitely found song attractive but he was NOT in that headspace obviously
-same thing with jin although he was in a better headspace then. he introduced jin and song to each other post-war and they dated each other.
yue
-never got the chance to figure out how much girlypop liked women
-i could so easily claim she's a femme lesbian and that sokka was comphet, and I could even CONVINCE ya'll, because he is SO comphet coded, but I really love yue's storyline as it is and the lasting affect it has on sokka,,,,
-i can also imagine her on the ace spectrum
-she's so sapphic she's so queer bro is literally the moON?? what's more sapphic than the moon
-so, whatever, I'll say she's bi with a STRONG female lean. if she'd survived and joined the gaang she would have dated both sokka and suki and i truly believe that
-she would've loved suki and i just KNOW it
-love her so much let my girl be free of her arranged marriage
ty lee
-lesbian or pansexual. was ready to risk it all for mai. also completely down to be in a polycule
-she simply enjoyed male validation and attention due to her unmet childhood emotional needs. the dudes at the beach as well as sokka were giving massive comphet energy.
-i do also accept the possibility of her being pan, that'd be pretty great, but yknow, we do need more lesbians.
-despite being a fire nation citizen i think she'd be pretty open and liberated when it comes to her identity, at least wherever it's safe
-because her own ideology and philosophy is like. pseudo air nomad philosophy so i think she simply doesn't give a shit
-she is really into pride events. she LOVES the parade.
-i think she did have feelings for azula, at least as a child. then it all became really unhealthy,
-still, she felt sad about how things ended with azulw. she genuinely wishes it were different
mai
-she does also give comphet lesbian vibes BUT the "i love zuko more than I fear you" line SLAPS so I'm going to say bisexual with a female lean. she's also definitely asexual—and also demiromantic.
-ADORED ty lee, she just always assumed ty lee would choose azula
-it takes mai a long time to develop feelings for anyone, but when she falls she falls hard
-she's really not a big pride person, but she grows to enjoy it eventually. she goes with zuko and ty lee.
-she's not super vocal about her sexuality, but she also doesn't hide it. she doesn't give a shit. it's her business.
azula
-azula is a lesbian. not debatable like the others, to me.
-her feelings towards ty lee and mai are very reminiscent of sozin's feelings for roku i believe. like iykyk.
-she couldn't remember which of the boys was the one she was supposed to "like," but she remembered perfectly which bikini ty lee and mai were wearing. she picked chan like lesbians pick a random boy to crush on in middle school.
-and then she instesd remembered one of thr gusy who were flirting with either mai or ty lee. bestie was jealous.
-she had comphet, so much comphet. she wanted to be loved.
-so much internalised homophobia.
-she has a type, and it's brunette non benders of similar build. by which i mean ty lee and suki
-the ill will she holds towards mai in her comic for ruining their group over a stUpid BOY-
-it's comical,,
-i love her.
jet
-all the freedom fighters are queer
-jet is probably pansexual or bisexual. and also he/they
-he had a thing for katara but he sure as hell also had a thing for zuko
-he punches homophobes in the face
-i never liked jet when i was a kid because he was a jerk and i hated him with katara, but i grew to really enjoy his character and his arc
-this boy wants to eat the rich
-he doesn't want gay marriage, he wants to abolish marriage
smellerbee
-transfem ICON, she/her, though generally gender non conforming.
-and she's also also aromantic and asexual.
-queer platonic relationship with longshot, because of how deeply they love and understand and support each other
-if you misgender her on purpose the whole group will gang up on you and by the end of it you'll have four broken limbs and they'll be arrested for aggravated assault
longshot
-he's aromantic and asexual but he's got unmatched non-verbal autistic rizz
-as i said, QPR with smellerbee
-but all the freedom fighters plan to keep living together forever,, they're found family
-him and smellerbee just have a particularly special bond
the duke
-the duke is pansexual, i think
-i think he had a crush on toph
-also he/they
-and that's about all I've got
pipsqueak
-he/they/she
-pipsqueak's literally his chosen name, nothing cisgender about that,
-gay
sneers
-transmasc, he/they, potentially genderfluid
-dating kori who is bi
haru
-bisexual, female lean
-he/they, potentially genderfluid
teo
-gay, crush on aang
jin and song
-jin is pansexual, would definitely date song who is a lesbian
-zuko introduces them!!
uncle iroh
-straight ally. women are great! big womaniser back in his day.
-loves gay people
-huge support for zuko coming out
-that being said, he wasn't ALWAYS an ally. like he wasn't homophobic either, but he didn't support queer people before lu ten came out to him. then he accepted it, because he loved his son. finally, travelling the world and studying different philosophies led him to be a great ally.
-then he became the biggest ally ever amd a huge advocate for queer rights
-on a similar note, lu ten was gay. ozai was straight. zhao was straight and azulon was probably also straight. just getting them out of the wAy.
piandao
-gay gay gay. likes men.
-him and jeong jeong as a salty judgmental old couple is so real
-also everyone knows about it but nobody dares to give him shit for it
-he just glares and you immediately get off his back
-he could get himself a husband and nobody in the fire nation would do anything to stop him because they literally cannot arrest him
-he'll just shut the door on their face
jeong jeong
-also gay. big gay.
-tons of internalised homophobia, bless him
-tons of self hatred
-like, the way he sees his firebending as a curse of destruction and hatred and hates himself for it—instead of seeing all the colours of the dragons' rainbow fire, like zuko and aang, who symbolise the new generation
-it can work so well as a queer self-acceptance metaphor
-he definitely ends up with piandao, as i said before. begrudgingly in love.
hama
-lesbian. privately, as per water tribe tradition.
-nobody in the south gives her shit for it.
-she definitely had a relationship with kanna.
-when she lived in the fire nation, things were different. living as her authentic self was impossible—even secretly, it became near-impossible.
-hama's life is one big tragedy.
pakku
-straight. initially homophobic as per water tribe conservatism. the sort of, "just don't shove it in my face" homophobia
-but upon realising that like, both his friend group and his wife are incredibly queer, he gets over it
-iroh helps with educating him
-it's also canon that zuko gives the southern water tribe custody of hama after the war which i find incredibly sweet
-but since hama and kanna were... tight, I find myself incredibly entertained imagining possible interactions between pakku and hama
kanna (gran gran)
-kanna was bisexual.
-in the time she spent traveling from the north to the south she slept with a bunch of people
-fire nation pirates, sand bender bandits, earth kingdom soldiers... hakoda's father is a mystery. a mama mia situation.
-other flings include the herbalist, probably, (all old people know each other)
-even madame wu, why not?
-like it entertains me to think that kanna was unhinged the moment she left the Northern Water Tribe
-and being a non bender she used all tools at her disposal to reach the south if you know what i mean
-that being said, she also learned to fight a bit. probably. just to spite pakku.
-when she reached the south, she had a thing with hama. i say this because of the kataang parallel when hama was taken away.
hakoda and bato
-hakoda is bi, bato is gay
-hakoda loved kya, bato loved him secretly and never told him
-after kya died, bato was his only comfort, they fell in love
-once malina enters the situation too, it eventually ends up being a polycule
-note that i strongly dislike malina and those comics

I thought the moon spirit and the ocean spirit were gonna be Katara and Sokka, and that would’ve made ATLA even more interesting.
The spirits of the ocean and moon gave up their immortal forms to live on the earth. Why would they choose to be koi fish?
It would make much more sense for those spirits to take an avatar-like spirit form where they attach to different members of the Water Tribe. Always pushing and pulling at one another, of course the spirits would attach to a brother and sister.
Katara, being the water bender, would naturally be the moon spirit. Sokka would be the ocean spirit. But they had no idea.
So if they were the spirits instead of the koi fish, the story would’ve become much more layered.
And way darker.
When the Fire Nation invaded the Northern Water Tribe at the end of season 1, Admiral Zhao intended to kill the moon spirit. Let’s say somehow Zhao had figured out Katara was the moon spirit, and followed her north with Aang. So to kill the moon spirit, he would kill Katara.
After killing Katara, of course that would set off Aang’s avatar state and the water monster form.
Yue would still give up her life to bring back the moon, but she would be giving her life for Katara. This would absolutely destroy Sokka. First he loses his sister. Then the girl he loves gives her life for his sister.
After this, Sokka and Katara would simultaneously have a closer and more strained sibling bond. Sokka becomes even more protective to make sure he never loses Katara again. But he also resents her for being the reason he lost Yue. Katara would be wracked with guilt over this.
It becomes the source of tension between the two of them that builds throughout season 2 before coming to a head, where Sokka and Katara have a massive falling out. Katara says Sokka blames her for Yue’s death. Sokka admits it. They trade hurtful comments that cut deeper and deeper every time. While this is going down, they’re on a boat, and the waves surrounding them are getting more and more treacherous. They’re pushing and pulling at one another, just like the moon and sea. Then to save themselves, literally, they have to make amends to calm the sea around them.
It would’ve added so many more layers to their already complicated relationship.
It’s (to me) such an obvious choice to make Katara and Sokka the moon and ocean spirits, I feel like the writers HAD to have considered it! If they did, I get why they went a different direction. Having Katara die, even temporarily, never would’ve been allowed by Nickelodeon. ATLA is already pretty dark for a kid’s show.
If their target audience had been just a bit older, I truly think the writers could’ve run with that plotline.

(do you take this jerk to be) your one and only)
read it here on ao3
Under the leadership of Fire Lord Iroh, the Fire Nation has made every attempt to restore peace and make amends for the harm they inflicted during the Seventy-Year War. Their newest proposal is a literal proposal: a marriage to unite the Fire Nation and the Water Tribes.
The Fire Nation offers Prince Zuko’s hand.
The Water Tribes offer Princess Yue’s.
Sokka is apparently the only person in the world who has a problem with any of this.

I’m about to lose it over Sokka
So I bought “The Lost Adventures” yesterday and Sokka's Poem almost made me cry the person who wrote it is a genius because it’s so PAINFULLY in character
If you haven’t read it ->
“Oh I know Sokka and his dumb jokes Sokka who lost his girlfriend to the moon. Sokka who can’t even bend paper except with his mitts. But at the risk of blowing my own horn, who rescued Suki from the prison at Boiling rock? Who defeated the wolf spirit? Well sort of. Lots of battles to fight, lots of strategy to craft, It’s a busy life But then night comes. The air is still the waters placid the fire banked the earth dense and unyielding. No one is combining with a spirit. No one is reincarnating. No one is kidnapped. Everything sleeps. Everyone vulnerable, barefoot, and drowsy. This is me at my best, when people I love or revere or both need me whether they know it or not. I almost never sleep. There’s too much to do and only I can do it!”
I would like to gently remind you all that this is canon before I continue.
I know Sokka is the main comic relief character and everyone focuses mainly on Katara and Zuko's trauma because it's the most visible but I think there is really something to be said about how Sokka copes by being a Type A personality.
I've said this before but I'll say it again. Sokka is the one who has arguably the most reason to be paranoid. There has not been a single person in his life that he has cared about who hasn't been killed, kidnapped, or tortured. It's often overlooked because the gaang is all friends with the same people but it's deeper than that.
Yeah Katara and Aang liked Yue but not like Sokka loved her, and the same goes for Sukki. Sokka is such an intense lover and always dives in head first for every one he meets even if he denies it (see: the nomads from the tunnel) and that's a depth that I think is sometimes lost on us as well as the other characters.
On top of that he is self aware. He knows how much he loves and cares for the people around him and he knows that they're constantly in danger. I also find it hard to believe that he wouldn't realize the effect that his trauma has on him especially in terms of paranoia.
He is the one who makes the plans and hides the bodies and protects them while they sleep because he's the oldest. So he spares them all he can so that they might retain even the smallest bit of a childhood that he was never allowed to have.
In the comic when he speaks the last few lines it is also over a frame of Zuko which is so special to me as well because even though he isn't younger- Sokka truly doesn't mind being the protector of the people he loves. He never complains, never mentions it, and never falters.
I could go on about him for days because the poem in this book really intensely highlighted my favorite aspect of his character and the one I relate to the most. A lot of media focuses on sibling rivalry and it means so much to me that the A:tLA writers chose to focus on the need/want to protect your siblings from anything that could harm them.
Even if you know they are stronger or can take care of themselves that isn't the point, and Sokka's character is the perfect embodiment of this.

the fire burns so bright (until i cannot hide)
Sokka always feels like he has something to prove.
From being a worthy son, a strong warrior, to a wise leader.
But there is something else that he yearns to prove, in his heart of hearts, buried deep.
He wants to prove that he isn’t a monster.
He’s not like them.
His father tells him, again and again, I know you are not like them, I know you would never do that, never betray us.
I know, I know, I know.
But it all feels fake.
It always feels fake.
Sokka knows that in the elders’ hearts, in some of the mens’ hearts, maybe even in his parents’ hearts, they fear him.
They are terrified of what he can do.
And beside him, beside his flame that he can push to the surface and burn this place to the ground, is a blue-faced figure, standing tall, silent and watchful.
But Katara doesn’t know this.
He didn’t know this, for a time.
No one knows this, except for the elders, his parents, and some of the men.
And he was fine with that, he was fine with his powers.
Until they took his mother away.
After, he always felt stares, crawling up his body,
The judgement, the renewed suspicion.
And so, is it really any surprise that one night, feeling alone, and bitter, and isolated, he cries?
He tries not to cry too loud, to avoid waking Katara or Gran-gran or even Dad and causing them to fly into a panic, muffling his sobs with his parka.
He stops, though, when he feels a hand on his shoulder.
He flinches, and opens his mouth, prepared to shoo away Katara or maybe even Dad, but stops, freezing when he sees its face.
A blue face, marked with intimidating snow-white fangs.
His mother had always told him he was blessed by a spirit, but Sokka had never bought it. After all, the spirits and the Avatar abandoned the world, so why should they care about him? A fire child, an ashmaker.
But here one of them was, crouching next to him.
“Who are you?” Sokka whispers, because he would really like some answers.
The spirit tilts its– his? –head and says, “I do not know. I do not remember. All know is that I am is your protector.”
“I’ll give you your name,” Sokka decides, “The Blue Spirit.” He chooses to call him.
“I like that name,” He tells Sokka, “But now, will you tell me about your pain, child of the flame?”
Sokka blinks. That subject change was very fast. But he supposed Blue was like that. Quick, to the point. Sokka scooches closer to his supposed guardian. “It’s just that I’m Water Tribe,” Sokka confesses, and spirits does it feel good to let this out. “We’re all about, um, watery stuff you know? And I’m, well, like you said, a ‘child of the flame.’”
Blue seems very thoughtful, placing his hand under his chin. “You are Water Tribe by birth, but fire flows through your veins,” He muses to himself. “Agni certainly loves to play such games.”
“I just wish Agni hadn’t picked me.” Sokka complains.
Blue chuckles, only for a bit. “No one, not even most spirits, would like to get caught it Agni’s web of odd games.” He agrees.
Sokka grins at him. “At least I have you now.”
And that was the beginning.
~
When the Fire Princess came, Sokka was terrified.
He felt ready to run and to hide, but he felt and cold hand on his shoulder, and resolve filled him once more.
He put on the face paint.
And was instantly knocked down.
Sokka tumbled through the snow, and there was his presence again. He’s taking this guardian role very seriously, Sokka thinks in the back of his head as Katara rushes towards him.
Then the tiny 12-year old boy came, and sacrificed himself to keep their village safe.
Katara tells him they have to find him, and that she doesn’t care if he doesn’t want to, because she’ll go anyway.
(But Sokka, being the genius he is, had the forethought to get a boat before Katara even opened her mouth.)
~
When Sokka had tried to show-off to the Kyoshi Girls, he did have his reasons.
They were dumb reasons, but reasons nonetheless.
He was also definitely not expecting to be humiliated, the girls laughing at him, and the hot burn of shame scalding him like heated water as he leaves.
But he remains curious as to how they fought, the fluid motions interesting him.
So, later, he approaches the leader– at least, the person he assumes to be the leader– and asks her to teach him.
He humbly kneels down and says, “I’m sorry for what I said,” He apologizes. “I would be honored to be taught by you.”
Suki raises an eyebrow. “Really?” She asks, skepticism dripping off her voice. “You be willing to be taught by a girl?”
Sokka bobs his head. “Of course.”
She smirks. “And you swear to follow all of our traditions?”
“Yes.” Sokka agrees.
Her smirk grows wider, which, honestly, should have put up some red flags for Sokka. “Just so you know, I do mean all of them.”
Sokka didn’t understand until he put on the dress.
Sokka grimaced as he twirled around a little. “It’s a dress,” He complains. “I can’t fight in a dress!”
“It’s not a dress,” Suki says patiently. “It’s our armor.” When the slight pout was still on his face, she says, “Hey, listen. That silk is for bravery, and gold for honor. Wear that with pride.”
Sokka pauses. Those things were good. Maybe it wasn’t so ba—
“Hey, Sokka! Nice dress!” Aang says cheerily, and Sokka knows it’s probably meant as a good thing, but spirits does he want to strangle Aang.
Sokka pulled a face. “Let’s just get this over with,” He says glumly.
He ends up getting knocked down again and again, over and over. He gets frustrated, throwing his fan into the wooden pillar.
Suki sighs. “Sokka, you don’t use brute force in this style of fighting,” She explains. “You use the enemy’s strength against them. Now,” She tugs the fan from the pillar and hands it over. “Try again.”
-
The peace Sokka was feeling was quickly disrupted, for Fire Princess Azula arrived.
She and her crew started attacking the Kyoshi Warriors. Azula was perhaps the most vicious in her methods, flipping Kyoshi Warriors, sending them flying. Sokka felt his heart beat, faster and faster. He flew into action, jumping forward, fighting with his fans, albeit a little clumsily.
But Azula sadly is able to knock him over as well.
“You seem to be getting better,” She says mockingly. “For a peasant, I suppose.” She raises her fist to deal the finishing blow, but an invisible presence, and Sokka knows it’s Blue, drags him faster than any normal human could.
“Sokka!” Katara cries, rushing forward. “Come on! We have to leave.”
“But–” Sokka tries to say, but then Suki is there.
“You have to leave, Sokka” Suki tells him, and maybe his heart cracks a little here.
“Wait!” Sokka says, “I just wanted to say, I’m sorry for treating you like a girl when I should’ve treated you like a warrior.”
Suki smiles. “I may be a warrior,” She says softly, leaning forward and pecking him on the cheek, “But I’m a girl too.”
He blinks, but he can’t say anything in reply because Blue has started dragging him again.
Later, Aang confirms Sokka’s theory that the bald kid is absolutely insane because he rides the Unagi, that crazy serpent thing, and extinguishes all the fire.
He tries to talk with Blue about it later, but the spirit just huffs, and like a child, crosses his arms and looks away whenever Kyoshi Island is mentioned.
~
The first time Aang meet Blue, they tell him later, is when Sokka is kidnapped by Hei Bai.
Aang finds Blue in a panic, frantically searching for his chosen. The moment he sees Aang, Blue grips his shoulders and begs him to find Sokka.
As they search, Blue explains. “When the spirit kidnapped Sokka, they somehow separated me from him. I can’t– I can’t find him in here, the spirit is hiding him somewhere, I can’t–”
Aang places a comforting hand on Blue’s shoulder. “We’ll find him, don’t worry,” He promises, and Blue relaxes.
Meanwhile, Sokka is screaming as Hei Bai drags him away, kicking and struggling.
Hei Bai seems to quickly tire of this, tossing him away into the fog.
Sokka hits the ground a bit too hard, and passes out.
-
Blue shakes him awake. When Sokka opens his eyes, Blue sighs with relief and hugs him tightly.
“You’re alive,” Blue murmurs, his voice muffled by Sokka’s shirt. “I thought I failed and that– that you were gone forever–”
“But I’m not,” Sokka says gently, “I’m still here and sarcastic and incredibly as strong and manly as ever, Blue.”
Blue huffs. “Sure you are.”
(Things don't stay all chummy for long. Aang has a time limit, the comet, and then...)
~
When Sokka heard the screams of his little sister, he ran.
She was crying, and crying hard as she ran away. Aang stood a few feet away, looking horrified.
Sokka felt anger rising in his chest, breaths puffing out quicker.
“What happened?!” Sokka screamed. “Who did this to my sister?”
“I did!” Aang said, voice cracking. “I'm sorry, I was practising firebending and it got out of control–”
And Sokka’s brain stopped. The words circled around in his head.
Practising firebending, got out of control, practising firebending–
It got out of control.
Sokka’s breathing quickened as he remembered the day he tried to firebend and Blue’s face had been burnt and Sokka had cried and cried and begged for forgiveness until Blue told him he was a spirit and he was fine and now this had happened to his sister.
“Get out,” Sokka said, voice shaking. “Get. Out!”
And Aang obliges, running away. Sokka packs up Appa, rambling to Blue.
His hands tremble as he places all their stuff. “I could have done that to Katara, Blue. I could have done that to anyone. I already did it to you!”
Blue sighs. “Let me do the packing, Sokka.” Blue says gently.
“Why?! I'm fine! Completely fine! Totally focused.” Sokka exclaims.
“Sokka, you're completely rattled. You're even tying up Momo.” Blue points out.
Sokka realized this was quite true, and begrudgingly obliged.
~
Sokka’s heart is quaking, because he has to hurry fast.
He has to save these people.
He’s not what Jet said he was, he’s not an ashmaker, he’s not like those people that took his mom and Jet’s parents from them!
He’s good, and he repeats that to himself over and over.
(Somehow, it feels like a lie.)
But Blue is there, and it makes him feel good.
(But only a little.)
“Please!” He begs the town, “I’m not a spy! I’m serious! The dam will break, and your town will be flooded!”
The soldiers growl, coming closer at them with their very pointy spears. “Just look at your clothes!” One of them says in disgust. “Some other nation scum, I’ll wager. The Water Tribes certainly must be weak if they sent you.”
The others grumble in agreement.
Sokka might’ve been drowned with them, trying to convince them to listen, but someone steps forward.
“Listen to the boy!” An old man says, voice shaking from age. Sokka realizes it's the elderly man Jet tried to attack. “A crazed young man tried to attack me just because I was Fire Nation, even if I did no wrong against him! I certainly wouldn’t put it past him to blow this town to smithereens if given half the chance.”
The town evacuates almost immediately.
-
When he finds Katara and Aang, Katara is beating the living daylights out of Jet, tears forming at the corner of her eyes.
Sokka tells them all of the village’s survival.
“You’re a traitor, Sokka!” Jet screams at him, “A traitor! You’re no better than the Fire Nation! You are an ashmaker!”
Katara looks murderous, but Sokka cuts in before she could say anything.
“No, Jet.” Sokka says calmly, though inside the words sting, “You became the traitor when you stopped protecting innocent people.”
-
“Sokka,” Katara says carefully as they leave, “Why did Jet call you an ‘ashmaker?’”
And now, he cannot hide anymore. He just opens his palms, and small flame flickers.
Katara gasps. “Sokka, you–”
“I know,” Sokka says shakily, “I know. I’m an– an ashmaker.”
“Sokka,” Katara whispers, “Don’t say that.”
And Katara hugs him, and so does Aang, and then Momo joins in and Appa lets out a little roar.
And, as always, there’s Blue. And even if Sokka can’t see his face, he thinks he’s smiling.
~
The Northern Water Tribe is disgusted by him.
Really, he should’ve expected it.
More awful and hateful words are thrown at him, especially by Hahn. They push him into the snow.
Yue is the only one who doesn’t care.
She is nice to him, and finds his fire fascinating.
“Why?” Sokka asks. “Why do you like it?”
Yue pauses. “I am a non-bender,” She says softly. “And being a firebender is always better than being a non-bender. At least people take you seriously and they respect you. Even if in their heads they think you a monster.”
Sokka thought about that a while after, and realized it was true.
He and Yue talk a little more, and he realizes he’s falling for her, fast.
(He doesn’t see the angry aura radiating off Blue in massive waves when he figures this out.)
-
Sokka cries after the Siege.
He hates this, so much.
He hates Zhao, he hates the Sun Spirit, he hates–
He hates his firebending!
The hot tears of shame and hatred and grief rush out of his eyes.
And then there’s whispering sounds, going faster and faster until it suddenly stops and Blue appears.
Blue crouches in front of him, and grabs his chin.
Sokka stares into the seemingly soulless eyes.
(But Sokka knows there’s humanity in Blue. He knows how Blue reacted when Sokka got kidnapped.)
Blue carefully wipes Sokka’s tears away with his thumb.
“I know now,” Blue says. “I am not only your guardian. I am also to be your friend.”
Sokka cups Blue’s hand, which is now resting on his cheek.
“Thank you,” He whispers, and Sokka means it. “You give me more warmth than any burning flame.”
&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&
A/N: uhhh yeah it took a while- i decided to split this into the books bc i realized how lengthy some of the episodes would get (like the boiling rock for one. theres a reason its split into multiple parts.)

The scene where Sokka and Yue are kissing is very cute until you remember that Aang is also in the room with them ( although he's busy talking to his past self). Can you imagine how hilarious and awkward would be if Aang ended his conversation with Kuruk only to find Sokka and Yue kissing?

when the moon falls in love
Tumblr media
You were just an ordinary child from the Northern Water Tribe. Your father was one of the priests of La and your mother was a housewife like the vast majority of women in your tribe.
You had a happy and fun childhood until one evening when your father came home strangely happy.
As a child, it seemed strange to you to see the man as cold and rigid as a piece of ice smiling.
You became anxious when you noticed that your mother was trying to mask her anxiety with curiosity.
Soon your father revealed that Chief Arnook wanted you to start having play dates with Princess Yue.
Apparently, Master Pakku/Yagoda had praised your waterbending and intelligence.
The Chief thought you would be a beneficial influence for his daughter
At first you were happy, you understood too late that your father only wanted to use you to gain influence over the leaders.
You met the princess the next morning.
In the beginning, you understood each other very well, even if she was a bit shy.
You became friends and started to love Yue more and more.
She was adorable, always waiting for you with cakes and excited about any idea you had.
When you got into trouble, she did everything she could to save you from punishment.
The first time you noticed that Yue wasn't as perfect as you thought she was was when you skipped a play date.
It was a friend's birthday and you had completely forgotten about the princess.
Chief Arnook was not happy and came to your house to talk to your father.
Yue had cried all day and refused to eat or get out of bed.
Of course, your father went absolutely crazy and punished you. He tried to slap you in front of Yue's father but your mother made you promise not to be selfish anymore.
That upset you. Were you selfish? No way! Now you didn't want to see Yue anymore.
You had no choice, so the next day you apologized to the princess and her father. But from then on, you started not enjoying Yue's company anymore.
She noticed that you no longer treated her with such warmth as before and tried to flatter you by giving you gifts. You told her to give up, which disappointed her.
She tried to subtly threaten you by telling you that your fathers will not be happy if she is sad.
You told her that you don't care and that you'd rather spend your time looking at your ceiling than looking at her.
That made her bite her lip and burst into tears.
You felt horrible and thought you were too mean to her.
You hugged her and she told you about how she was born sick, she was blessed by Tui and her father was too protective and didn't let her have any friends.
Now you wanted to dive into the ocean because of the shame you felt. Not allowed to have friends? This is so bad.
You continued to be her friend out of pity, even if sometimes she freaked you out with her jealousy and protectiveness, you were sorry to leave her alone locked in a boring palace.
As you grew up, you thought more and more about marriage and how you would be able to forget about the palace and your father.
Unfortunately for you, the others had other plans. So you were engaged to the princess.
You felt that the spirits liked to make fun of you.
Then came the avatar and his two companions.
Let's just say the whole tribe exploded when Master Pakku saw you trying to teach Katara waterbending.
Yue looked half ready to pass out and half ready to kill Katara with her bare hands.
Who did she think she was?! How dare that girl come into her house and steal the love of her life?!
Did I mention you were born to create drama?
When Katara confronted Master Pakku you defended her and spoke out against your sexist traditions.
You decided that it would be good to have the support of the princess, so you gave her a tearful speech about how you want to make a better world for her and for your mother.
Yue believed you the moment you mentioned your mother, she knew that you absolutely adored your mother.
Then came the siege and sacrifice of Yue.
The sadness you felt surprised you.
You shouldn't have been sad for Yue.
But you should have been saddened by the loss of your freedom forever because Yue was ready to have you both in life and in the spirit world.
And you couldn't do or say anything,
what waterbender would dare fight the moon?
Although I do not own the characters from avatar the last airbender, this work belongs to me! I sincerely hope you liked it. please rate it and leave a comment! follow me to see my next posts! Don’t forget that the request are open💖💖💨

Azula helps Zuko escape. She's gone a little crazy and Zuko thinks that getting her help is worth the risk of bringing her to the Gaang.
