hihihi ok. so i’m in my last of us fixation mode and i’m being extra silly about it but i NEED to know what’s ur current opinion on the last of us hbo?? also i logged onto tumblr and saw a lot of rly good points defending joel’s final choice and i remember during the last of us pt1 playthrough u had differing opinions so i wonder if u think the show’s differences affect that at all? btw i LOVE ur stuff and cannot wait until u do last of us pt 2 wehehehehe!!! anyway besides all that i just want u to know that u are one of the things in my life that makes it easier to get up in the morning
I still feel exactly the same about the final events as I always have! The show didn't change it for me, and actually being able to remove myself from being in control of the situation in the game and actually just watch the events play out in show format solidified that further. The connection I have to Joel as a player when I play the game really helps me understand his perspective more and stomach the goal a bit more easily, but without that immediate intimacy it puts into perspective for me how kinda monstrous the whole thing is from every angle. Obviously I don't ever lose that sympathy for him, and I never stop understanding why, because the whole point of the conflict is that no one is in the right. Ultimately I think the damning thing for every single person involved is that they removed Ellie's agency from the equation, and I still stand by that. They all should have talked to her. They should have told her the truth. All she wants is for her immunity to matter, and I believe that they may have been surprised at the lengths she's willing to go in order to make a difference, whether it's ultimately the right call or not.
I don't know what arguments you've seen exactly in defense of Joel's choice, but personally I don't really agree with one I see a lot and I'd expect will pop up again now that the show is over, which is the whole "well who's to say a vaccine would have worked anyway?????" angle. I think, while reasonable from a meta standpoint, completely ignores the intended framing of the story in order to more conveniently justify a protagonist that the story through its entire runtime is trying to tell you is a little bit of a piece of shit. It's pretty clear and safe to assume that the ultimate intent here is that... yes, the vaccine WOULD have worked. Maybe not in the sweeping way they hoped, but Ellie's sacrifice absolutely would have done something. The whole moral dilemma of the situation really does not make any sense unless you give them that as fact imo.
So then, assuming that is true, you have to wrestle with the idea that Joel is willing to take down the entirety of humanity for Ellie. And not really for Ellie, because none of this is what Ellie wanted. The game AND the show QUITE LITERALLY SPELL OUT for us that Ellie really really really does not want to go back to Jackson without finishing what they started, regardless of the cost. Joel's reasons for saving Ellie, while understandable, are ultimately selfish and rooted in his own trauma and having just seen the light at the end of his grieving over Sarah. Again, incredibly sympathetic, but it's selfish. I know we like to joke as much, but Ellie IS NOT his daughter. They share a similar bond after everything they go through, but by the end of the game you can already feel Ellie pulling away from that notion because she's starting to realize Joel doesn't have the same commitment to the idea of her immunity being meaningful as she does, they're only a few miles away and he's already asking her to give up and go back to Jackson with him.
Then, of course, I think what ultimately damns Joel in my eyes on a poetic/storytelling level is his decision to lie to Ellie after it's all over. That's the nail in the coffin for me. It would be one thing if he said "they were going to kill you on that operating table without even telling you what was going on and I couldn't let them do that", but instead he lies to her to make sure she's still able to see him as the father he desperately wants to be again. It doesn't change anything. He tells her her worst fear has come to pass: her immunity, this unexplainable thing that has taken so many of her loved ones from her, is completely useless. Not only that, but now even more people are dead. Including Marlene, who's known her since birth. The only thing his lie changes is the fact that he's responsible for it all.
Anyway, part of what I love most about The Last of Us Part II is how it follows up on these threads and you may be pleased to know that I actually just started streaming the game last night after the HBO finale premiered cause I was so pumped up I couldn't wait any longer haha. So you'll be seeing VODs for that soon :)

Bit of left-field question, but: I'm in the middle of a deep dive on exos and reboots, and wondered about your take on something. In earlier lore I've lost track of--iirc something involving Lakshmi-2 researching the topic, I'd be indebted if anyone had a link--suggested that reboots in exos are rare and not fully understood in the present day. I figured that jibed, since it's implied in Legacy's Lament lore that a proper reboot requires fresh Alkahest, which would be hard to come by. But now the Entelechy lorebook offhandedly mentions modern exos all having been rebooted several times since the Collapse. So I'm curious if I missed something, or there's a wire crossed in loreland, about how widely known the need for reboots are/how to go about them, or if everything post-Collapse would have just been exos hitting spontaneous boots for unknown reasons. Thanks for your time!
I couldn't find any mention of it in Legacy's Lament so if you have some specific line you're thinking of, plese share! The only thing I can think of is this:
"Clovis. You, me, and every other Exo… we deserve the life we were promised. If this portal falls, and we die, we lose that life. And if we're gone, and the Vex find some other way back, humanity is doomed. So, let's shut it down. Hell, let's swallow the damn key. But the portal stays."
Elsie explaining to Banshee (at the time Clovis-43) why they can't destroy the Glassway portal; because Exos need those Vex to live. I always read this as Elsie thinking about how if their bodies are destroyed and have to be remade, they would need Alkahest again, as well as Alkahest being needed to make brand new Exos in case they are needed to fight the Vex again. I'm not sure if it relates to resets, though a possibility exists.
But generally speaking, a reboot should not require Alkahest mostly because of what Lakshmi-2 researched; she was researching Spontaneous Exo Reset Syndrome which is a rare condition that causes an Exo to reset on their own, spontaneously. Nobody knows what causes it. Here's one of my posts about it with links to others I've made about it before.
Two cases of it had an Exo spontaneously rebooting in the middle of combat and one rebooting in the middle of a journey back home in a jumpship, so it's virtually impossible that a reset requires some special equipment and Alkahest. Otherwise, it wouldn't be possible to reset like that out of nowhere, unless there's some internal mechanism that works through Alkahest. But applying new source of Alkahest shouldn't be needed, if we go by this information.
Maybe there's a way to do reset with Alkahest and maybe that reset is better, but they can be reset without it apparently. The spontaneous reboot is not really supposed to be happening and nobody knows why it does, so Exos really shouldn't be going through that a lot (and there's only a few known cases). I think there's a difference between regular resets and spontaneous Exo reset syndrome; regular resets may occur because of some sort of trauma or memory overload or something similar, while the syndrome appears to happen completely involuntarily, uncontrolled and sometimes almost lethal as it can incapacitate the person entirely.
It's still fairly unclear how resets happen and how an Exo decides to go through them. Lakshmi theorised that Lightbearers don't need resets at all because a Ghost protects them somehow which seems to hold true. I don't think we have any specific data on civilian Exos resetting. A lot of Exos needed resets back in the Golden Age while fighting on Europa, but that probably has a lot to do with combat and stress.
Still, Ada-1 is one of the two Exos that have never reset. In her case, likely because she was made in a different way in comparison with others. She doesn't seem to experience DER at all and doesn't have to mimic basic humanisms (literally has no mouth). There's only a single mention of another Exo with no resets, here, called Mist-1. They appear to be a civilian and we know nothing else about them that isn't in this tab.
How and why random civilians would need and complete their resets is I believe unknown. But the vast majority did go through them so the CE is fine on that front. Obviously tracking down the very rare individuals who haven't reset might be difficult, on top of the possibility that someone like Mist-1 may have died since. Ada-1 is a special case who wouldn't remember the Collapse because she died during.

41 ghost/living person au ava x beatrice
[AO3 Link]
...
Beatrice waking up is one of the most beautiful things Ava’s ever seen in her life.
She’s always thought this—privately at first, in an attempt to not bother her with the levels of Ava’s adoration and then overtly, later, when she learned that Beatrice wouldn’t get it either way—and it’s never been more clear to her before now. As a rule, Beatrice is almost never relaxed, but she can’t help it when she sleeps.
Ava lets herself stare without fear. Beatrice has always had a way of drawing her attention—look at me, Ava had thought even in those early days, living anew and burning with a desire to know and to be known, look at me—and here’s the thing: Beatrice has always been a creature of habit (pun totally intended). She wakes up at six in the morning every day, no matter what; her alarm blares, but Ava’d bet that even if it didn’t go off she’d still get up right on time anyway. Her alarm blares, she sits up. Rubs her eyes once, twice, and then swings herself out of bed.
Just like that.
She opens one of the curtains just a sliver and allows the rising sun to shine inside the small room, turning the room from a dim gray to something far nicer, tinging the pillows a soft orange that, in turn, flickers across Beatrice’s hair, caressing her in such a way that makes Ava’s fingers itch, eager to touch.
Her highlights are growing out, have nearly been swallowed by natural dark locks, but it hadn't been the blonde that made Ava fall for her (though it hadn’t hurt). She’s stunning even now, especially now—will always be, probably.
Beatrice makes sunlight look damn-near dreary, and Ava’s mouth dries as she watches.
“You’re so pretty, Bea,” she croaks, unable to keep it all inside. Now there’s no reason to.
“You try to keep yourself hidden from the entire world,” Ava goes on, rocking back on the bed. She watches as Beatrice putters silently around the room, blinking the sleep from her eyes. “And you did, really—you did such a good job of that. But you’re so gorgeous, like, holy fuck. I’ve never seen eyes like yours. You should wear your hair down more often, but your bun looks good, too. Bea, do you want me to talk about your freckles again?”
Beatrice doesn’t respond to her, of course. She never does.
Not that Ava can blame her, really.
(Ava’d found out pretty quickly that Beatrice couldn’t see her. Couldn’t hear her, feel her. Couldn’t perceive her in any way.
No one could.
She got over it pretty quickly—if you count having a couple panic attacks getting over it—and she’s mostly okay now. By the time she’d appeared here, in the middle of Beatrice’s bedroom as she was sleeping, it’d already been four days since she went through the Ark. She doesn’t know why she’s like this, doesn’t know if she’d ever ended up meeting Reya; she doesn’t even have any memory of being healed, though she must have been. Unless she’s dead, and this is, like, some weird sort of limbo.
But she’s died before, and it wasn’t like this.)
All in all, she thinks, delighting in the casual ripple of shoulder muscles from beneath Beatrice’s shirt, this is a way better deal than last time.
She doesn’t watch Beatrice change, of course. She has some shame. But she takes what she can get; it’s the little things, the way Beatrice walks around in the (supposed) privacy of her own room with a short-sleeved shirt on. She’ll always pull on an extra layer before she leaves, Ava’s learned, but the flex of her biceps even for this limited time is nothing short of holy.
Once Beatrice is properly dressed, her bun fixed—though it hadn’t been mussed in the first place—her boots tightly laced, she heads out of her room, into the long hallways of Cat’s Cradle.
Ava smiles, bounces on her feet, and follows her out the door.
(As far as Ava knows, the Halo’s very much fine and still in her back. She can feel it at times, though it never goes off quite as powerfully as she remembers. She can still phase—though there’s really no point to it anymore—she can still fly, can still heal—which was an absolute bitch to test, by the way—and maybe this all points to her not being dead, but in the end, it doesn’t really matter.)
Because she’s a creature of habit (it doesn’t get any less funny), Beatrice stops by the dining hall first. Breakfast is essential, she’d said in Switzerland, and Ava’s never one to turn down any food. She’d always enjoy those lazy mornings—though lazy is never something she could call Beatrice—and the early meals with her.
It’d be nice to eat again. She misses food more than she misses a lot of things. Well—that’s not really true. She misses a lot of things, really; food, the need to sleep, talking with Camila, the way Beatrice would touch her shoulder when she was being just the slightest bit annoying.
“I love you,” she says while Beatrice eats, because it’s all she can do. “I miss you. Thank you for being here. I’m sorry for stalking you, heh, but I feel like you’d be okay with it. I love you.”
I love you. I love you. I love you.
After breakfast, Beatrice heads out to the training grounds. She doesn’t have all that much to do in Cat’s Cradle nowadays, and Ava’s seen her duties lessen and lessen over the days, from performing most of the new recruits’ training to now just overseeing it. She thinks, sometimes, that Beatrice will snap one day and just leave this all behind. She kind of hopes she will.
It’s weird—complicated, really. She wants Beatrice to live so badly, to discover who she is without the towering, suffocating walls of the OCS boxing her in. That’s always what Ava’s wanted for her.
But she desperately doesn’t want Beatrice to be alone.
At least she’s not alone here, is the thing. Ava would follow her anywhere, but Beatrice wouldn’t know it. At least here she still has a few—has Camila, has Mother Superion, has Dora, even, who’s not very close but who’s here.
(And Ava’s seen her grieve, too; those are always the worst nights. Beatrice grieves her so plainly that sometimes Ava wishes she’d just be forgotten entirely, if only to spare her the pain.
She never wishes that for very long. She’s selfish like that.)
“Bea?”
After training—during which Beatrice stood and watched the recruits and Ava sat and watched her—Camila finds her in the hallway, a sad smile already forming on her face.
“Camila,” Beatrice says. She always sounds so tired when she speaks, now, and Ava’s heart clenches in her chest. I love you, she thinks, desperate for Beatrice to hear. “Did you need anything?”
“No, it’s not that.” Camila looks a bit skittish. “I just wanted to give you something.” She holds something out—something that Ava can’t see—and Beatrice inhales steadily. Too steadily. Ava wonders if Camila notices or not. “It took a little while to shape it, but it’s yours.”
Ava comes closer, unable to bite back the curiosity. She doesn’t like being too close, now, doesn’t like the way her skin slides through everyone else’s without even trying, but she can’t help it. Sometimes there’s a pull she just can’t fight. Beatrice is still staring at whatever it is, doing her keep-calm breaths.
Ah. Ava understands the moment she spots the thing in Camila’s hand. A piece of Divinium—nearly black, with how dull it is—attached to a simple cord and clasp. A necklace.
“For you,” Camila says finally, placing the stone in Beatrice’s hand. “So that you’ll know.”
Beatrice doesn’t say a word when she takes it from her, cradling the piece of Divinium between her fingers as if it’s liable to bite her. She doesn’t react, really, just closes her fist around it and meets Camila’s eyes with a look that Ava can’t see from her angle.
Whatever it is Camila seems to understand, and without another word spoken, Beatrice turns heads back to her room. Ava follows after her, because what else can she do? “I love you,” she says as they walk. “Even if you don’t know it, I’m here. I love you.”
She hopes Beatrice doesn’t cry. That’s the worst of it, not being able to comfort her. She doesn’t often cry, but that only makes it that much more gut-wrenching when she does.
Beatrice doesn’t cry, but she does spend a few minutes sitting and staring down at the necklace. She doesn’t say anything aloud, but it’s in the way her hands twitch, how her leg jumps up and down on the bed. Time passes slowly, and Ava watches from the corner.
“I love you,” Ava says, chin trembling because she can’t not say it, because there’s not much more for her to do these days than just tell Beatrice how much she means to her in the hopes that one day she’ll understand. There are tears forming in her eyes and she doesn’t even care because it’s not like there’s anyone here to notice it, anyway. “I love you so much. I wish I could talk to you right now. I miss you, but I’m glad it’s me rather than you. I love you.”
I love you, she says, right as Beatrice slips the necklace over her head.
And that’s when she swears Beatrice looks directly at her. Beatrice’s eyes go dark and desperate, and Ava thinks that she is going to cry, actually, when she realizes that the Divinium hanging high on her chest is no longer dull and dark, that Beatrice’s face is flecked with shining blue. Beatrice stares through her, mouth dropping open.
Ava’s heart jumps with the thought of danger. If Beatrice is attacked here, when Ava can’t do anything—
She spins around, but there’s nothing there.
And that’s when Ava realizes, half a second before it becomes obvious. Realizes because she knows Beatrice, has known her long before she was cursed to follow her around forever. She turns back around, meets her gaze—look at me, she’s always thought, look at me—and stares.
Because Beatrice isn’t looking at something behind her, or above. Beatrice is looking at her.
“Ava?”

a semi big rant about klayley
Since I'm bitter and bored i wanted to give a deep dive into klayley's relationship because no one gets them like i do
First things first, Klayley is NOT platonic and it's absolutely hilarious and obliterates Klaus's entire redemption arc to think so
We all know the main focus when it came to Klaus's character was the way fatherhood changed him/made him want to be better
The reason i said thinking klayley is platonic literally ruins his redemption arc which is basically the main plot of the show in many ways is season 2
Season 2 genuinely makes it impossible to say his relationship with Hayley was platonic,
1) Klaus was insanely adamant about Hayley not getting married, my guy literally wanted Jackson dead the second he got married to hayley lmao / tried to kill him after beating the dog shit out of him to stop him from marrying Hayley so it's safe to say the thought alone enraged him
2) his lame excuse for his jealousy was once again hope, because his ass can't admit he even cared for Hayley if his life depended on it , his excuse was " Jackson knowing about hope puts her life at risk" add to that the fact he literally murdered his biological father because he was terrified of the POSSIBILITY it MIGHT put his daughter's life in danger and mind you he actually loved his dad and was in tears when he killed him
3) he actually steps aside and lets Hayley marry Jackson, now Klaus paranoid Mikaelson who was gutted to kill someone he loves to protect hope from something that might or might not have happened actually allows the marriage to happen and let Jackson live even after securing the wolf army so Hayley won't hate him
If you say his jealousy was about hope and not mainly Hayley you're literally saying Klaus cared more about Hayley's feelings than his own daughter's life and more than having a good relationship with hope because after all his excuses he couldn't hurt Hayley and didn't want to lose her
That alone literally takes away so much from his character and it's a very dumb take
Now i personally believe he actually loved Hayley more than hope but that's a different conversation
But i still understand that he wouldn't put Hayley's feelings above his daughter's fucking life or above having a decent relationship with hope especially since he doesn't give a fuck about Jackson unlike with Elijah
And this is only one of the many proofs Klaus's jealousy was about Hayley therefore you can't pull the platonic card unless you want to butcher Klaus's character
Season one is Klayley's best season alongside season 2 tbh because if you watch it and still can't see how in love they were you should rewatch it
It also shows his jealousy was about Hayley and not the baby
You have Klaus ask Hayley about her interest in Elijah and is actually hurt by her response in 1x03
The moment he feels they're getting closer in 1x07 he bites his brother and leaves Hayley with him knowing damn well dementia would kick in and Elijah could seriously hurt/kill Hayley and that means his child that he made such a fuss about would die
Now if he didn't give a fuck about Hayley personally why the fuck would he put his child's life in danger out of jealousy
He then goes to lock her away from his family and assigns literal bodyguards to watch her likeeee that man was insane
What made me laugh was the way even after he bites his brother and puts Hayley and hope's life at risk because he's a
man child, Hayley was literally telling him she wants to believe in him and to not let HER down (5x08 flashback)
Like he throws a tantrum that could've gotten her and her baby killed and she's still telling him that despite him not giving her any reasons to believe in him she WANTS to , if not for her feelings for him why on earth would she tell a man Who almost killed her for wanting an abortion and almost killed her again out of jealousy that she's desperate to have faith in him
And now i do not in any way think choking her for wanting an abortion is okay and i do realize their relationship was initially very problematic
But the funny thing is that after he almost killed her for wanting said abortion she was fucking smiling and happy because he promised her to fix the air conditioning 💀
Like he got her giggling and kicking her feet after he almost killed her because he said he'd fix the air conditioning
Down bad is an understatement
We move to 1x11
In the middle of a literal apocalypse, everyone is losing their shit because the world's ending and Mr "i don't care about Hayley" is literally carrying food boxes with her because his ass couldn't watch her cry
What's funny is that he not only tries to comfort her but he actually gives her advice on how to make things right with Elijah
And he's the Same person who has been whining about Hayley loving Elijah and how it's about "his child"
If he really didn't care about her he will not give a shit about Hayley being sad over something dumb in the middle of an apocalypse
And if it were about hope, the most logical thing is for him to not react because at the end of the day it works in his favor if Hayley and Elijah's relationship is ruined
So why on earth would he risk not having the relationship he wants with hope to help Hayley with the Same thing he's worried about just because she's sad
1+1= his jealousy was never about hope as much as it was about Hayley because he ends up choosing Hayley over and over again
And my 2nd favorite klayley moment in season 1 which is 1x20
Klaus is unhinged, now when hope's life was in danger that episode he literally says he'll "rip it out of her himself" and he's insane enough to do it but funny enough when Genevieve tells him that means Hayley dies he backs off instantly
He's literally presented with a choice between Hayley and hope and he chooses Hayley
Which takes me to the ultimate Klayley moment in the entire show that supports the fact he actually cared more about Hayley
The finale of season 1
His daughter gets taken to be killed, and he chooses to mourn Hayley's death
Something Marcel said about Klaus is that he's the best at mourning and taking action at the same time
Yet when his daughter could be sacrificed at any moment by those witches he can't move away from Hayley's corpse
Jesus,i repeat, his child was taken to be killed and he's so insanely in pain about losing Hayley that he chooses to hold her dead body as close to him as possible instead of taking immediate action
From night to morning he didn't do shit to save hope until Elijah's annoying ass came in with his dumb monologue
Now season 2 my beloved, i already explained why season two makes it impossible and very dumb to say they were besties which is why the writers never once in the entire show ever say or even imply klayley is platonic and Why one of the show runners straight up say they have a very complicated relationship/there's attraction
And Joseph Morgan talks about Klaus having romantic tension with Hayley
Now to one of my favorite parts of season 2 is the way the writers begin ruining haylijah's relationship and it's incredibly hilarious because i don't think even they realized it as much
We know that Klaus and Hayley aren't talking after giving hope away
We also know Hayley's not adjusting to vampirism and is clearly depressed
Elijah, the man she supposedly "loves" couldn't help her , he doesn't know what to say or do and she isn't even allowing him to help her
She's lashing out at him and pushing him away
And lmao because Elijah doesn't actually have a real connection with her he BEGS Klaus to talk to her and straight up admits only Klaus can understand her
I mean if you have to beg your brother to help the girl you love because even you can see they have a better connection with her than you do that's embarrassing
And also funny enough Klaus succeeds where Elijah fails
Hayley who was throwing a tantrum anytime Elijah breathed next to her was so eager to actually let Klaus comfort her after he hasn't talked to her in months
And where Elijah was upset that Hayley isn't the perfect girl who redeemed his brother that he put on a pedestal anymore he tries too hard to "fix" her
Meanwhile Klaus was taking her to kill witches to make her feel better and was literally proud of her😭
Showing who actually loved her for who she is
And mind you Klaus wasn't liking it when Camille was having her "rebellious vampire stage" yet he was smiling when he talked about the way Hayley brutally murdered people
Because he too put cami on a pedestal in a way just like Elijah did with Hayley
They both loved the version of cami/ Hayley they had in their head
Hayley who pushed Elijah away gladly welcomed Klaus's different attempts to help her
He didn't mind taking her to kill people if it made her happy but when that failed he pushed her towards leading her pack again
And she didn't have faith in herself, she didn't think she'd be a good leader but he still believed in her and only then she too finally believed in herself
Something that Elijah tried for months to do but failed and Klaus did it in less than a day
That's proof enough she valued Klaus above Elijah and cared more about what he thinks
And god season 2 was peak klayley angst
So in 2x13 hope is almost murdered by Finn/blown up in that explosion
Hayley decides to leave then as she should
But when Klaus asks her to stay she does
Like her ass was so in love with him that she ignored the fact hope could've died as a result of all the crazy family drama because Klaus wanted her to stay
That woman was down bad for him
In 2x12 Hayley had just broken up with Elijah and is supposed to marry another man and she was crying and throwing up because Klaus is not "letting her in"
Now me personally if i supposedly broke up with the love of my life to marry this new guy i wouldn't be crying in the woods because my ex's brother who tried to kill me twice because he's insane is pushing me away but I don't know about you
They're such good "friends" right?
Hayley taking hope away was literally about Klaus pushing her away again
After she agrees to stay with him she threatens to leave if Klaus ruins it with her one more time
And when he gets too paranoid in s2 and pushes everyone including Elijah away and then takes the blame for Aiden's death only then she leaves
She literally gets fed up of forgiving him and giving him second chances and decides to abandon Elijah(again she's supposed to be "in love") and Rebekah who protected hope for months and leaves the Mikaelsons behind because she felt like she lost her connection to Klaus
Proving Klaus was more important to her than Elijah and the Mikaelsons as a whole
Also it's deliciously angsty how Klaus was so terrified of Hayley leaving him that he tried to turn her pack against her so that she has no option other than staying with him
Yet his fear of losing her is what ends up driving her away
It's also confirmed by one of the show runners that Klaus did all that drama later on to save Hayley from dahlia
Dahlia wanted Hayley dead and even when she decided to leave him after he considered her family and was ready to do anything for her he still chose to save her life and convinced dahlia to curse her instead
Now Klaus is fucked in the head if that man wanted real revenge he would've killed Jackson and her entire pack but he still spared them because not even after her betrayal could he manage to actually hurt her feelings that way
Now to say my last piece especially about the other dumb ships
And more into Miss Hayley's perspective:
Hayley's reasons for "loving" Elijah is that he was kind to her/is a good person (exact same reasons she loved Jackson)
And it's something Hayley herself admits, when Klaus asks why the sudden interest she says "he was kind to me" she says she thinks Elijah is in no way like Klaus and is "better" in 1x07
All superficial dumb reasons that show she doesn't know Elijah and only romanticized the idea of him because Klaus was both horrible and unavailable
In season 4 she talks about how she was pulled towards Elijah cause he made her safe at a Time she WAS scared of Klaus
She's literally having a dilemma in season 4 and breaks up With Elijah after entering his mind
She faces Elijah when he first turned and had absolutely no control over his blood lust
Seeing him fall off the pedestal she put him on shatters her perception of him and makes her partially aware of the delusion she was in
Yet despite everything Klaus has done which is genuinely way fucking worse given that the real Elijah never did and would never hurt her in any way
She was still risking her life for him at every possible chance knowing she has a Whole daughter
In season 5 , we know Klaus was dropping dead bodies like it's nothing, he was massacring people to the point rumours about him losing his mind started to float , you can imagine how bad it was
And Hayley was still defending him😃
He literally abandoned her and their daughter for YEARS and when hope was rightfully upset, Hayley still sided with him and her big excuse was that "but he's really sad☹️"
Lmfao she broke up with Elijah because he's not the knight in shining armor she thought he was but when Klaus was going on murder sprees she sends him letters telling him she misses him
And he never read her letters, she kept writing to him knowing damn well he's just gonna return them
She loved him that fucking much
Now I've already talked about how Hayley very obviously loved Klaus way more than she ever loved Elijah
He was a safe choice/ placeholder for Klaus
She chose Jackson over him, she straight up says she would chose Jackson over Elijah again in season 3
She valued having a decent relationship with Klaus over Elijah in season 2 by leaving his ass because she was having an imaginary divorce with Klaus
Elijah only fell for her because he saw her as his family's and most importantly Klaus's savior since she carried his child
He at first loved her out of nowhere and for no fucking reason yet without his memories of his family and despite already meeting her and having a somehow intimate moment with her he ends up killing her because he cared more about Antoinette
Proving ultimately the only reason he "loved" her is his weird obsession with his brother
And when he didn't remember his family he chose Antoinette over Hayley despite having met her before
Klamille was decent,
Klaus was genuinely irritated when she started to not act like the version of her he "loved" as a vampire and he Said shit like "this isn't you" despite enjoying that same "darkness" in Hayley
The ship lacked more development/screen time and it's obvious she was put there as just a love interest
She didn't contribute to his character at all
The only, i repeat only characters to actually change Klaus were Hayley and Hope
Klaroline, lmao , can't believe i have to talk about them but god the shippers are insufferable and delusional
Klaroline's entire "relationship" is on the same exact level as tvd klayley before all the development on the originals
He's infatuated with them both except with Hayley it was explained and made sense ,
At that point Klaus knew of Caroline and he didn't give a shit which is Why it's dumb how he didn't give a fuck about her and attempted to kill her but out of nowhere had a crush on a random 18 year old he didn't know anything personal about, and throughout their entire "thing" he still never got to actually know her which is Why he thought having a simple life wasn't "enough" for her even tho she chose the said simple life with Tyler over him
She even celebrated his death at some point lmao
Klaus was never in love With Caroline just like he wasn't immediately in love With Hayley (!on the vampire diaries)
Now with Hayley he acknowledged how attractive she is the moment he saw her on tvd 4x03
She challenges him and he admires her courage to stand up to him when he first gave her her nickname
What makes klaroline not exactly special and on the same level as tvd klayley is that A not only does Caroline makes it perfectly clear she didn't like him or the "bad boy" type anymore after what Damon does to her
I mean even with how horrible Damon was she still forgives him and they become "friends"
It's who she is, she had plenty of time and chances to seek Klaus out and she didn't even after years of Stefan's death
She has compassion for him after seeing his struggles as a parent and it makes him worthy of something a bit better just like she admits she forgave Damon because she found a common ground with him (Loving Liz)
Now tvd Klaus whose life and his loved ones lives were in danger when the cure was out
And only Hayley could get him to Katherine and the cure and he was still so weirdly gentle When "interrogating" her even she questions it and he admits it's because it's her(basically she's hot lol)
She has insanely valuable information he desperately needs as his life depends on it and he was flirting with her instead
He could of used his knowledge of her real origins as a way to get her to talk because she hasn't told him shit yet but he instead tells her that randomly and then let her go
So saying Klaus loved a crush more than the woman he came back to the city to save knowing it can cause an apocalypse and chose to mourn her death over saving his daughter's life is way too insane
In conclusion Klayley>>>

Phobos x reader
Rude >:(
Requested on Wattpad
Also note that there is already a similar Phobos oneshot on Tumblr out of coincidence, so yeah, just a heads-up
Summary: Director Phobos does not stand for any disrespect towards Nexus Core's god emperor. Unfortunately for him, there seems to be a special case...
Warnings: One mention of torture, violent threats
--------------------------------------------------
Scientists and guards glanced as their Director strided through the halls. He looked angry today, footsteps even louder than usual and fists clenching behind his back. Nobody dared to ask what happened, not only because of his unspoken policy of "don't speak unless spoken to or if it's important" towards the lower ranking employees, but also simply because unlike most politicians he could actually kill them before they even notice.
Besides, even if he didn't, he would still be way too embarassed to admit the source of his frustration.
A civilian.
That's it. That's all there is. Not even anyone working directly for him, just some random citizen that seemed to take pleasure in getting on his nerves.
Whether that be ignoring every speech he gives out or every rule he imposes, and they always found a technicality to go around to avoid punishement. It threatened his public image occasionally, and piereced right through his over-inflated ego everytime.
They outsmarted him in the simplest of things and if that didn't make his blood boil I tell you.
And the worst thing? He couldn't bring himself to punish them for it.
It's not like he didn't want to, on the contrary, he should have sliced their head clean off long ago, but for SOME reason, he couldn't.
"Director?"
Maybe it was them playing with legal loopholes again that made him feel like they were untouchable, maybe they were actually trying to play mind games on HIM out of all people...
"Uhm...Director Sir..."
There was just...something about them, their shitty little smile, the way they talked to him so casually...
"Directooor..."
He hated it. He hated them.
"DIRECTOR PHOBOS!"
"Gah!" Phobos whipped around, snapping out of his thoughts to angrily look at the employee whp just yelled at him.
"Who do you think you are to yell at your lord like that?!"
"This is the fifth time I've tried talking to you Sir! Do you even know where you've been walking this whole time?!"
The dictator looks around him. Huh. In fact he DIDN'T know where he was going, he was on autopilot as he was thinking about that damn grunt.
"...What do you want anyways vermin." He avoided accidentally showing his embarrassement by asking a question.
"We got a delivery at the front door."
"Get someone else to take care of it. I'm busy." Busy walking to nowhere thinking about some random ass person.
"It needs your signature."
Phobos heavily sighed.
"Fine. Now get out of my sight George."
"My name is Ben."
"Whatever. You all look the same."
Ben left as he grumbled something, leaving his boss to start walking himself to the entrance at which deliveries to the Nexus Core were, well, delivered.
On his way there, he thought about how most of his workers truly do look the same. While yes, he was the one to impose the uniform, they could at least make an effort to stylize their hair or whatever. Maybe if the employees took inspiration from HIM, they'd be a little more-
"..."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...Hi-"
"What are you doing here."
Phobos interrupted as he stared at the very same person he's been thinking about the entire day, the same one that has been consistently mocking and disrespecting him for way too long, standing outside the door with a package in hand.
"First of all, it's rude to interrupt pe-"
"Answer me."
They silently stared at him with a 'bitch' expression for a second before answering.
"The usual delivery guy got sick. So I'm taking his job until he feels better. Happy little accident huh?"
He glares at them and their cheeky grin as he brutally grabs the notepad and pen out of their hands and starts signing.
...
...very long signature he has...
..................
"...Is the drawing of you on a throne really ne-"
"Yes."
"Stop interrupting me! It's rude!" Are they really talking to their god emperor as if he was a stupid child? That piece of shit!
"You're rude. Now scra- ahem. Leave at once."
The smile on their face only gets larger.
"Imagine calling someone rude and then telling them to scram. Not like it'll be possible anyway, I have like 3 other people in this building I need to deliver stuff to. So unless you want to play delivery boy to them, I'm going to have to come inside."
Phobos' eye twitches. What kind of plot convenient badly written gacha life coincidence stupidity is this?! He's not humiliating himself like this! He can just go back to his office and use the intercom!
"I'll send a message to them. Who are you looking for?"
"Huh. This is probably the most polite you've been to me so far. I've got a Christoff, a Hoffnar, and a Crackpot."
"Oh...That stupid Crackpot is never going to want to come in here..."
He heavily sighed as he rubbed his eye. They don't know who that Crackpot is, but they sure as hell make their boss sound exhausted.
He stared a little more at the subsitute delivery person, before making a hard decision.
"You're coming with me in my office. Anywhere else would disturb my employees work."
Not sure how just standing around would disturb any work, but they just shrugged and accepted it as they followed Phobos back to the top of the tower.
"...And I've tried to be polite with you before, but you insisted on being a disrespectful little fool. So you only have yourself to blame."
"I know."
They eventually reached the elevator, which was great for the director as there was no one in there to look at the two of them weirdly or to judge him when he slightly drops his fancy talk and posture. Sure, he liked it, but it's way less natural from time to time, especially when all he wants to do is curse the gods he wishes so desperately to be for putting THIS person next to him.
"...Say, why doesn't Crackpot want to go to the delivery and storage room?"
"Fuck if I know. This man never makes sense."
...
"What did they order anyway?"
Might as well make some small talk if they're going to stay at the top of a very tall tower for some time.
"Let me check...Some religious things, christmas lights, a furby, there's also a bunch of Slaughter Time merch and clown themed stuff for one of them."
"I'm not surprised. They're all clowns."
"Woah, you talk about your employees like that?"
"If you had to deal with them all day every day, you would too."
"No I wouldn't."
He turns his head when they say that. How can they know that so well? They can't just expect all their reactions to be oh so pure, when they hadn't spent even a day in the science tower!
And even if they wouldn't talk shit about anyone behind their backs that...that would....well that would be pretty impressive honestly. At least to Phobos.
But before he could say anything, the elevator doors opened to his big private office's floor (because as cool as it was to have an open office watching lower beings work for you, it wasn't the best option for privacy, even less so when you had such a DISRESPECTFUL fellow with you).
Next they go into his office, he calls the top 3 scientists to go to his office, yada yada yada not very interesting stuff, he also took the occasion to sign some paperwork with that criminally long and complicated signature of his.
"...Why didn't you just let me stand in front of the storage room. Does that Crackpot just not want to get close to it in any way?"
He suddenly stopped writing (although with that signature it was closer to drawing really).
He didn't think of that.
He didn't say anything, he just went back to his work, although he seemed a little more tense, and his eye had squinted a bit, to which they quietly chuckled before looking around the room.
It was a very impressive one at that. Large with an entire wall replaced by a red-tinted window offering view to the city, and although it was more empty than the average person would expect it to be, especially for the leader of Nexus Core, there were still a few shelves, tables and frames displaying many medals, fancy paintings of the director displaying just how self-absorbed he was, as well as some trophies, almost all gold for one plastic exception that was for some sort of school theatre club thingy. Huh, cute.
Both Phobos and the subsitute delivery person turned their head when someone knocked on the door. That someone was the main scientist of the project, who was given his package, albeit not without flashing a strange look on the two people in front of him.
And then he left. Leaving them alone in the room once again.
It took a little bit of time, but eventually, the civil started talking to Phobos. And even if the director was quiet and reluctant at first, it was surprising how well things were going after a few minutes. It started off with snarky remarks and passive-aggressive jokes, before eventually turning into more general talk about eachother's interests and how the author doesn't know how to write a good story like what the fuck is this idyat.
And then, a certain Hofnarr came by and picked up his clown objects and Slaughter Time™ merch, also giving his boss a weird look because of the errand boy standing right next to him for some reason, plus the fact the two seemed to have been having a quite pleasant conversation before he arrived, which is absolutely out of character for the dictator.
To be honest, Phobos himself was surprised. Just a few minutes ago, he wanted to chop this person's head off like they were french royalty, but now he was sitting there, willingly listening to their voice and responding as he was working. It wasn't normal, it just wasn't. And yet here he was, genuinely taling pleasure in hearing about whatever anecdotes this random fool had to talk about.
Although they clearly didn't stop with their attempts at teasing him in between people entering and leaving the office, reminding him of just how much they love annoying him.
Then Crackpot comes in.
Except when picking up his package, he didn't stop at a simple questionning glance.
"Hey, Sir, who is that?"
He asked his boss, making him raise his head from his work.
"Take a guess, doctor."
Oh, he seemed in a bad mood. Would usually be more professional. Well, it wasn't complivated to guess who they were, the true question really was...
"But why are they here though?"
The director slightly tightened his grip on his pen, the embarassement and realisation of how stupid this situation was from earlier coming back. He glared at his employee.
However, the intimidation that glare was supposed to inspire didn't seem to get by, as Crackpot seemed to have had another type of reaction instead.
"Oooooooohohohoho...I see...I see..."
He snickered with a voice waaay too cheeky to be having an innocent assumption.
The two people in front of the scientist stared at him with a confused look.
"See what?" Said the delivery person, Phobos just ignored it and leaned back on his work.
"Oh, nothing! Absolutely nothing my friend! Just...I guess I found the answer to my question by myself!"
He was clearly trying to keep himself from laughing.
"Leave."
The sudden and oddly loud order of the director made the two others in the room jump. But you could still hear the smile in the excentric scientist's voice as he left.
"Alright! I'll just leave you two to it now!"
And he closed the door.
"Huh. I like that guy."
Phobos turned his head to that.
"Oh, you do?"
"I just think he's neat."
They then looked back at him, a frin on their face.
"Now, should I leave or do you want to spend more time with me?"
Oh boy. Here was that stupid smile and tone of voice again.
"You shall leave now." He starts to get up as he says that, the tower is a bit complicated for newcomers to travel after all.
"Aw, that's sad. I wanted to talk a little more."
"Well I don't."
"Are you sure? You look like you could use a friend." That question seemed genuine, as their smiled dissapeared whilst asking it.
"I don't need friends. They dissapoint me."
"Are you sure it's just that no one wants to be your friend?"
He suddenly slamed his hand against the desk with a force that could have broken it if it wasn't made of some fancy strong material.
"Listen here, vermin! If you are unable to realise your place in this city, I would be happy to show you where that kind of disrespect you seem to have so much fun showing me could make you end up in!"
He loomed over them, his eye almost seeming to glow in the shadow he casted. And they simply stared.
"If I'm feeling nice, you might even be able to choose. Jail, torture or hell, which one would you prefer being put in when your attitude makes you forget who you're talking to?"
His breathing was heavy as the silence between them grew and grew before he realised what he was doing and calmed himself down and started walking to the exit of the room, signaling for them to do the same.
And they did. Completely ignoring what just happened.
In fact, they almost looked...satisfied.
They knew they were probably one of if not the first person to have made and most importantly seen the Director Phobos himself snap like this.
The walk back was quiet, still littered with strange looks at the duo passing by. Except this time Phobos had no problem with giving anyone who dared stare at him a death glare that immadiately made them cower.
Not much happened aside from that. They eventually reached the delivery entrance, and he thought that would be all. But before the delivery person got on their delivery person scooter, they turned back to him.
"It was nice talking to you, by the way."
Phobos raised his head to look at them.
"...What?"
"I spent a very good time with you."
"...But...I...I litteraly-" His hands were making little movements to match his confused face.
"Oh don't worry about that, that was mostly intentional."
They gave him that stupid cheeky grin again, although this time...he couldn't get too angry at them for some reason.
"Wouldn't have thought I could have fun with you without the teasing."
"So you- ahem. So you admit it."
He had to stop himself for a second to avoid sounding childish.
"I was never denying it. Bye Phobos!"
And without giving the director time to catch on to the fact they just called him by his name, they left. Driving away on the slightly broken road.
He had to get back to his work, but the antire time he did, that interaction...that compliment...it all kept playing in his head over and over again.
He had received compliments before. And an ungodly amount at that. It fed his already oversized ego even more than it already needed. But he knew none of them were real. He was completely aware all the praise he was constantly given was always in the praisers own gain. Either for a promotion, to avoid punishement, any reason really. But it sure as hell wasn't to show their boss their actual appreciation and feelings towards him.
So...to have a random person who not only doesn't even work for him, but actively tries to be disrespectful and annoying to him...be the first one to give a genuine compliment to him after what was probably decades...
If he had to be honest, he had to force himself to keep a straight, unsmiling face of pride while working.
Huh... His chest and stomach are feeling a little funny... Whatever. He never took a sick day, and he wasn't going to take one now. There's still a lot work to do.

Hi how’s it going? If you’re interested would you do? A last Airbender Mai x reder flic reader is male or gender neutral
Hi! Thank you for the request! Sorry it took so long. I hope you like the fanfic!
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character: Mai x gn! Reader
Word Count: 0.5k (502 words)
Tumblr media
“There she is.”
“That’s the one you were talking about?”
“Yes, the daughter of the governor.”
“I see what you mean, she looks creepy.”
“She’s always so gloomy as well. At events, she just stands in the corner and watches people.”
Mai made no indication that she had heard the whispered comments about her. She continued walking, her head held high. What did it matter what people thought of her, as long as she had you.
You. Mai wasn’t great with words but she knew cared about you deeply. And you returned the favour. You were always so sweet with her, taking her oddities in your stride and never making her feel like she was strange for being the way she is.
But now that she had heard the comments of others, she could feel old insecurities creeping back.
Maybe you were just being polite.
Maybe you were with her for the status boost.
Maybe you spoke about her behind her back the same way everyone else did.
She walked on. Thinking these things wouldn’t help. But knowing that didn’t help her clear her mind of her doubts.
~
“So how was your day?”
Mai glanced up at you from across the table. The restaurant you were at was one she had been wanting to go to for a while now and you had surprised her when she got home with news of a reservation.
She was grateful but thoughts from earlier still lingered in her mind. Maybe somehow you knew she had overheard people talking about her today and wanted to ease her mind so she wouldn’t suspect you of doing the same. Maybe-
“Hey. You okay?”
She’d been quiet for too long. Mai nodded, trying not to meet your eyes. She knew you would see through her if you saw the thoughts swirling behind her eyes.
“Are you sure? You’re doing that thing where you get really quiet and avoid looking at me.”
Damn. She pushed back her misgivings and met your eyes. There was concern there that didn’t look fabricated. She supposed the thoughts wouldn’t be quiet unless she voiced her concerns.
“Am I weird? Or creepy?”
You looked at her for a moment, clearly taken aback before you were able to school your face back into a more neutral expression.
“Yes.”
Mai’s heart sank. Of everything you could have said, that was what she feared most. She may be expressionless most of the time, but she could feel the unfamiliar burn of tears in her eyes.
You leaned forward, reaching out for her hand. “Yes, you’re weird. And creepy. And my favourite person in the entire world. I love you because of who you are.”
The tears were now for a different reason. She should have known you were with her because you cared about her as she was. She squeezed your hand back, enjoying the physical comfort.
“Thank you.” Her words were a whisper.
This time, a smile and a gentle nod were the only response she needed.

Good morning, your highness! (Or good evening. Maybe I should just not include time involved hellos???) I’m so glad to hear you’re doing well post surgery. I mean what would we do without you? Probably better to not think about it
With Leone I think you’ve implied him kidnapping us. For whatever reason he thought yeah, fuck it, yoink and suddenly we’ve lost rights. What would drive him to do that and what would that entail?
Is that a threat, anon? Do you know something I don't? Should I lock my windows a bit tighter? When you sent this ask I was dead asleep, but I read it in the morning, so I'll count it as a "Good morning" still.
Panic is how humans survive. It doesn't seem that way- humans survive off of calculated decisions to lengthen their lifespan, such as eating and seeking shelter and whatnot, but when it comes down to it, it's all about that one moment. What do you do when someone bigger, someone stronger has you? Do you bend? Do you hit them? You're not thinking clearly, whatever you do is pure instinct- and entirely different depending on the individual.
You can try to guess what someone will do in certain situations based off of their personality, but you never really know someone until you see them in high stress. Friendly, easy-going types can snap and get violent. Serious types can break down sobbing. You just don't know, you can't know. How many cases have you seen of people snapping in their fifties and sixties and killing their partner after five or six decades of peace?
You especially don't know Leone, who takes you in a moment of pure opportunity. There's nothing you could've done to guess that the man pretending to hate you would seize the opportunity. Leone is a very impulsive man. Irrational, impulsive.... He makes big decisions, or rash decisions, when he feels even a twinge of anxiety. To get Leone to the point of no return, he needs to be:
1. manic.
2. previously stressed out about the state of your relationship.
3. presented with an opportunity where he can act on impulse and doesn't have room to think about it.
I classify Leone as a bit of a loser. He's secretive and perverted- but he's too ashamed to really touch you, so he gets off on the fake you.
And, well, there's no guarantee that he took the real you. He's delusional enough to believe that you're just not real, sometimes. It doesn't hit him that he took an entire person until it does. Randomly. On a Tuesday at 2pm kind of hit. He didn't really take you! It's just Moody Blues fucking with him again and replaying you in- in. Something! Maybe this is something from your past!
The delusion clears when you can touch him and respond. Ohh, God, he's done. He's so done. You'll never love a man like him.
The drop after a long phase of mania is tough. Especially after you've done something you just can't take back. Settling into your new home isn't easy, especially considering your captor is too depressed to really take care of you.
Leone probably takes you back to his apartment, foolishly. He locks you in his room for the first few days and sleeps on the couch, which isn't abnormal to Guido when Leone's been drinking a lot. But you need to come out eventually. He doesn't have the luxury of having a bathroom attached to his room, there's only one in the whole apartment, and it's in the hall next to Guido's room. You also need to eat, and any other needs that your body tells you to take care of.
You may think Guido would freak out, and Leone does too, but he flat out doesn't care about you. Ohh, oops. Anyway. He's still not doing dishes. Guido's what he'd like to say is "neutral." He won't stop you from trying to get out unless there's something in it for him, but he also won't stop you from hangin' around, either. He's ignoring you until you speak to him, and if you plead with him, you'll most likely get the same three sentences, revolving.
"Maaaan, that's crazy..." or "Damn." or "Dunno, ask Leone."
Leone's fairly grateful for it, and perks up eventually at the 'help.'
Once Leone's feeling better, he'll give you the pampering you deserve, if you say he can touch you.
Until the next depression hits, and so on, and so forth. Just get really comfortable with whatever Guido's got on the tv for tonight.

Hi, something I never understood is why Kakashi didn't get rid of the elders once he became hokage???, I mean in the novel they tell us that Kakashi as hokage got rid of the corrupted system, got rid of Root and all of Danzo's followers and he also helped Sakura open the first mental health hospital, but it seems that the elders still have power in Boruto, I don't understand why they are not in prison.
I don't understand much about politics and therefore I don't get too involved when they relate it to Naruto, that's why I had that doubt, someone had said that Kakashi as hokage hadn't done it since the hokage don't have power over the elders since they are the ones who select the next candidate for hokage, but I wasn't sure about that, that's why I asked you, to see if you understand why and to know if that person was right
Unless the elder’s do something unforgivable that is recognized (so like they had their part on the uchiha massacure but the story line decided to just drop it cuz ‘itachi asked nicely’ so it can’t be used against them) kakashi or any other hokage has no real power to remove them
Because Kakashi’s also not the only one who would have wanted to
Tsunade hates them
Kakashi didn’t like them
We don’t see Naruto hate them but given that him and Kakashi know the truth about the massacure he SHOULD Hate them (yet he continues to idolize the f***ing third which is just terrible writing in my opinion)
The elders are kinda similar to the checks-balances system
The Hokage is the ultinate power, but even ultimate power needs someone to reign them in. Hence a system like the elders
Because of that, it’s not the Hokage’s powers to remove them without a damn good reason (and Kishi took away that damn good reason by having Naruto agree to keep Itachi’s stupid secret). For the Hokage to remove the Elder’s would be seen as a breech of their power. Them over stepping their boundaries)
Of course we don’t know the full extent of the political system. Kishi could have changed a lot of it to do better
Like he could have had the Hokage voted for by the village (Kakashi probably still would have been chosen. He was the one Shikaku chose as someone who could actually lead the village well and who was so trusted that all the other Kage’s could agree to work with him)
Even if the Hokage role was still nepo baby hand down, the elder’s could have been changed out by vote of the village. Then that way the villagers would get a say in just who is keeping the Hokage in check
Or it could have become a situation of remove the elder’s and make a government of clan leaders and civilian leaders to keep that balance and keep the Hokage in check.
There’s a lot of things that could have been done, but in the end they wanted to make Boruto and change only the bare minimum so even though Kakashi does change the most about a very broken system, he is still so very restricted by the story
Because if you actually take away child soldiers, boruto wouldn’t exist and the people making money off of that can’t have that happen
Edit: i do want to clarify that Kakashi did not get rid of the entire corrupt system. The shinobi system inherently is corrupt and tbh would take prob more than one hokage and a lot more fighting to completly change
He also didn’t get rid of root
What Kakashi did do was
Take root operatives into Anbu and make one coherent group
Change missions to ‘capture first kill only when necessary’. So Teen anbu Kakashi who killed every person he faced grew to become the man who made sure no anbu or regular shinobi did the same thing.
Opened the police force to everyone rather than just one clan
Helped and supported sakura in her goal to open a children’s mental hospital
And is stated to have fought against those who wanted to ‘uphold the old ways’ to make many of these changes because he knew they were necessary

WELCOME TO CD SUNDAY
I’ve made a choice that no smart person should ever do. I’ve bought a box of 100 mystery CDs.
Tumblr media
I love CDs. They’re my favorite form you can buy music in. But at the same time, I’m a total fucking idiot when it comes to music or music artists. Unless it’s from a video game, I probably won’t know it. So, instead of doing something a normal person would do like ask for music recommendations or look for new artists, I’ve bought too many CDs in order to branch out.
Every Sunday I’ll listen to an entire album, and then review and rate it. Because who doesn’t want to hear some random schmuck’s opinion on music.
Each review will have a summary of the overall album, a best and worst song listed, and a color based rating system. If you give a damn about what that means, you can read details under the cut. But for now, this post is getting way too long. See you on Sunday!
Red: It’s bad. There’s no reason you should listen to this. Pick anything else.
Red and Yellow: It’s pretty bad, but there’s one or two songs that stand out. Take those and leave the rest.
Yellow: Mediocre. It’s just okay. The kind of music you put on your playlist and just skip every time it comes on because you’re “not feeling it right now.”
Yellow and Green: Overall mediocre, but there’s one or two songs that are really good. You’re waiting for that song to come on the entire time.
Green: Good fucking music. Hands down. Absolutely give it a listen.

“Sickens me that people will just filter out specific tags and posts when we stop using trigger warnings-”
Bold of you to declare that more people should suffer because they’re missing a few posts that might trigger unhealthy coping mechanisms if seen. Deepened depression, panic-induced spirals, and traumatic flashbacks are worth it if they can find out that something else terrible happened to someone today.
Using guilt as a blade is not cool.
People block trigger warnings because they know they might be triggered. There’s a reason they exist. That is literally the whole reason that these tags exist. To warn people.
But, you gave your opinion on this already with your blatant, “Like actually fuck you and your mental health-” because it’s not really that important, right?
No you self entitled bastard it isn't
Not in the current scheme of things. Not when some of you are actively silent and trying to ignore what is happening to the point of missing most of the context and believing the exact agenda being fed to you.
Some thing are like actually bigger than you.
Also, I believe you missed the entire point of the original post and only picked specific lines so let me explain this properly. Trigger warnings are extremely important but when an entire populace got bombed and so many in the world turned a blind eye to it, those spreading the actual true news stopped hiding it behind such filters so some of you would actually look and see what's been happening and being ignored and a fact completely misunderstood due to propaganda. But since it all was so horrific, it would be censored either way. Cuz you know, ppl who'd been fed lies and propaganda all their lives tend to ignore words and suffering of the entire damn planet unless it involves themselves. So mentions (not images, mentions) of some things go uncensored. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T FUCKING CENSOR HORROR OF THIS MAGNITUDE!
But lo and behold I have ppl in my inbox complaining about their own needs and trying to turn around and guilt trip me while saying guilt is not a good weapon.
This isn't guilt, it's rage. Its sorrow and anger and pain and empathy and so much more coming out as rage.
Also, thanks so much for trying to derail the main point. I was talking about people filtering out tags such as "Palestine" and "Gaza" etc so they don't have to see any news
Personally I can't bring myself to watch some things either, it messes with my head too, and yes I do skip some of it. But it doesn't fucking mean I actively try to stay out of the loop by blocking the tags that aren't actually trigger warnings but just main tags related to the news. Just so you don't have to feel anything and don't feel guilt for being complicit by staying silent
I'm not using guilt as a blade. Guilt exists naturally whenever one does something wrong and knows it. If the guilt is unprompted by the words of others then you're doing something wrong and you know it. Blocking "Palestine" and "Gaza" made you feel guilty? That's bcoz you're at fault for ignoring it all. If seeing it brought you pain and you did nothing but ignore it and block it, never spoke up of it, never learned the background, you're the one in the wrong and your guilt is your own not induced by anyone, especially by those who are angry, who aren't even trying to guilt trip you in the first place.
Stop forcing people to take drastic measures when it comes to knowing the truth that those imperialistic opaque domes hide and maybe we'd actually respect your rules.
But none of us have to follow your rules when your humanity is dead

Oh what's this? Another post about the shaw pack?
Redacted Masterlist
Here's my own little take on if the Shaw pack were YouTubers. Starting off strong with the alpha himself...-
David - I'm not sure why but he seems kind of like a "How to" youtuber. If someone needs or wants to do something, he's the channel to go to because God damn he's going to do it right and so should you. Does Angel bomb or feature in his videos, usually as an example of what not to do? Absolutely.
"And that's how you fucking do it. Thanks for... Angel what the hell is that?"
"A... pineapple?"
"Angel the point of this video was how to change a tire, how do you have a pineapple?"
Speaking of Angel-
------
Angel- minecraft channel 100%. They also do an 2 ongoing minecraft series. One is just them playing and another one is them trying to convince David to play. Most of their channel is mostly variety if they're being honest since their interest and focus jumps from one thing to another, But they always make a comeback to Minecraft. Sometimes Animal Crossing too. They have a love-hate relationship with Tom nook.
"Listen here you little gerbilfucker, I know your being cheap with those bells. I worked hard to catch this spider and you're going to give me what I'm owed."
"[Animal crossing speak]"
"*gasp* Tom! What would the twins think?"
------
Asher - Are you kidding me? Gaming Channel obviously. Does this even require explanation? As long as it can be competitive, there's going to be videos of it. He tries to get Baabe to join in, but they tend to play for a bit before just attempting to sabotage it. They find it funny.
"Oh come on Baabe! You practically handed the other team that kill. We coulda won."
"Yeah but there's no fun in playing the game."
"Thats like... the entire point though."
-------
Baabe - arts and crafts Channel. Fuck five minutes crafts, theirs actually work. Baabe has a stressful office job that saps at their creativity. They want some time where they can just unwind and let those creative juices flow. Then they get to see some fruit of their labor.
"More glitter. There can never be too much glitter. Unless your partner is around. My boyfriend tried to eat glitter one time. So make sure they won't eat just anything when they're hungry before you pull out the glitter."
-------
Milo - adventure channel. He loves exploring new places, preferably outside, and showing off how fucking awesome forests are. And the tree facts this man has? They're insane. He's the tree man. Sweetheart likes taking him urban exploring (going through abandoned buildings) and scaring the shit out of him though.
"It's kind of cool to see how the architecture can- oh Jesus where did they go now? I swear this is the only reason they would break a law, just to scare me."
"Boo!"
"OH FUCK ME"
Milo also has a permanent collab with Sweetheart about the glory of Aggro.
-------
Sweetheart - ghost channel mostly. They have an ongoing series where they're just scaring people through pranks though. Sometimes they get Angel and Baabe to join in. But they will totally try to find ALL the haunted locations. They'll review scary movies and books too. Anything to do with horror and the paranormal is right up their alley.
"How does David even react to being scared, Angel?"
"You'd think I know? I don't know how to sneak up on him with how good his hearing is."
"Oh God I hope this doesn't break covert. I'm live right now, and my sergeant would be so pissed at me."
They have yet to break covert and everyone has just brushed the weird conversations off as normal. After all what kind of person obsessed with this kind of thing like Sweetheart is can be labeled the typical normal?
------
Sam - Sam can really only do a lot of things at night, so he's more of a comfort channel. He'll just go live with Darlin, Vincent and/or Lovely, and some of the other mates to just chill and talk. He'll sometimes play games but not often since he's not that confident in his ability to play. But he enjoys a good chat and being able to hang out with his friends.
"Vincent. Just admit you can't drive stick and we can move on."
"Sam I will literally break your elbow. I can drive stick, I just prefer not to."
"Right.... because you can't drive it."
"SAM!"
---------
Darlin - quite the opposite to their mate, Darlin is a self defense channel. They don't want other people to get hurt after their friend did. And they can't really help thinking that if their friend knew more moves to fight against Quinn, they would have gotten less injured. It's an irrational thought but they can't see anything wrong with putting the information out there at the very least. David often helps them, or Asher. Milo doesn't have a wish to be put in a chokehold by the nicknamed "Tank".
"Now if some asshat is chasing you with a knife, you should try to figure out if you're faster than them. If you can run, you probably should. Knives are hella sharp and it hurts like a bitch when they stab you. Trust me, I've had my fair share of encounters."
They like the chill streams with Sam though, especially if they can convince him to give them a massage.
---------
Christian - let's be honest, his entire personality is that he's better than Asher. So he's another gaming channel, but he's in a constant beef with Asher about who's the better gamer.
"What? Asher got third place? Of course he did. He's a total noob. I, however, am not and I'm going to get first place. Beta my ass."
--------
Amanda - baking channel. She just wants to be able to chill and make sweet things for her loved ones. Christian will sometimes join her and be her official taste tester. The flirting and sexual tension is noticed by all the viewers, no matter how much the two try to "hide" it.
"Macaroons tend to be kind of difficult, especially for people just starting out. But practice makes perfect. Plus if you like paying attention to little details, I totally recommend making them."
"I like paying attention to every detail of you, Amanda."
"O-oh!"
-------
Arden - while Sweetheart is a sometimes prank channel, Arden is a dedicated prank channel. She gets the Stealth to join them a lot of the time too. But while Sweetheart focuses on pranking someone in real life, the viewers aren't even safe from this evil genius. They will upload "PSA"s made specifically to prank the viewers before most of them realize it. And yes, there is an ongoing series of her bullying Christian.
"Guys! You know how Asher's partner makes cool arts and crafts? Well they showed me this super cool way to get tin foil really shiny. All you need is a microwave!"

Glitchy Red Headcanons for Connection
Thought I'd share some (mostly) spoiler-free headcanons for my Glitchy Red fic just for fun. With what I have posted so far these should all be pretty obvious, but there's a couple more things I want to hint at for the story. Some are just random tidbits that have no reason for existing other than just because.
In my mind, Red is something between a glitch, an AI, and a supernatural entity.
The longer a player interacts with the game, the stronger Red gets. He'd been left dormant for so long that when Leann found him, he hardly had any of his old abilities and was borderline an amnesiac. All he had at that point was his bitter hatred of players and the glitches. Her keeping the game on for so long has allowed him to become himself again.
The glitches he experienced broke him in every way imaginable. Hence the reason it takes him some time to snap into his real self.
Despite all his talk, he has no idea what he is or how he exists. He can't be bothered to care.
Theoretically he could be transferred into a PC or some other more powerful device, but due to the broken nature of his code and the fact he doesn't fully understand what proper programming is, it likely wouldn't end well for whatever he's put in. He's a stubborn bastard now so he'd be fine, but the computer would be bricked.
I feel like, just for shits and giggles, Red's "data" is this impossibly convoluted mess of code that is somehow much larger than it should be. He exists within the Pokémon Red cart, along with the entire game, and this mofo is like, 8GB of data by himself. Makes no sense. Something mind-bogglingly stupid like that.
There's more below the cut, and beware potential spoilers for stuff I haven't written.
Now for some fun ideas I have that I kind of want to do stuff with but I don't know if I'll include it in Connection or not.
Red is powerful enough to physically haunt a person. Only the person claiming ownership over the cartridge can see and hear him. Likewise, Red can only interact with them and no one else. He mostly uses this fact to stare intimidatingly from the corner of a dark room, a la sleep paralysis demon, or just watch them while they struggle to ignore his presence and go about their lives.
In the past he's gone far enough with this that he's tormented players to the point of people thinking they've gone insane. And they pretty much were by that point.
Red's other preferred ghost tactic is to swat things from their hands or wake them up in the middle of the night by prodding at them. Or screaming right in their face.
Unless the player passes the game along to some other poor sap, they'll be stuck with him indefinitely.
The game cannot be destroyed. It lets off major fuck-you energy to anyone who tries. Smash it to bits with a hammer? Lol. Set it on fire? Got any marshmallows? Throw it into a lake? Well, I'd almost say good job but did I forget to mention that the only other thing Red can interact with is his game? Whoops. Hope you don't mind him letting himself back in to give you an earful for throwing him away like that. And no, water can't damage it either.
This is of no deliberate choice from Red. He'd love to let the game be destroyed so he can stop existing in pure agony. The damn thing just won't die though, and subsequently, neither will he.
He doesn't really have anything against kids. Mind you, he doesn't like kids since he gained sapience, but he can tolerate them more than adults. At least children have the excuse of being naïve and clueless when they're breaking the game. Usually. He'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Adults who come back to witness the broken horror of the original game know full-well what they're doing and he can't stand it.
He won't do much to torment kids aside from his usual in-game antics. The adult players are the ones who get thrown out of bed at 3am or have their dreams haunted.
The developers were adults too so the hatred's also pretty obvious. He'd love to get his hands on them some day. He has a paranoid side that is whole-heartedly convinced they're out there looking for his cart, ready to erase him and be rid of the stain on their record.
It's been a while since someone last turned the game on. He seems to have a bit of reputation now.
Has zero concept of the internet but could probably figure it out.
He doesn't hate the new gens so much just because they replaced him. He loathes the fact that they are all genuinely better than he'll ever be. He and his game are broken, not good enough, and now that he has self-awareness he realizes he was never meant to be anything special. He was simply a stepping-stone, a learning curve meant to kickstart an idea. He was, isn't, and never will be anything more than that. His only legacy is how glitchy his game is.
He's very aware of the irony that the very thing that made him what he is, is the whole reason why he was deemed a failure by his creators. If you're smart, you won't bring it up.
I have more, but I think I should stop. I could talk about this little project of mine for hours. Or any project for that matter. If anyone would like to hear more of my deranged ramblings they're more than welcome to ask. 😅

i love platonic or siblings kuzupeko!! do you have any thoughts on what their post-game reunion might be like or how they would interact with each other afterwards?
Oh my gosh yes hang on
first things first the pre-and-during game
Okay so. My opinion, and something I think the characters might realize themselves, is that Fuyuhiko and Peko love each other very much and good god do they need some time apart.
They almost literally can't live without one another! They've never had to, since they've always been inseparable, and probably never found a reason to either until NWP.
Shit we already know but it's my words on it:
Peko, as I understand it, doesn't want to be apart ever- or at least she thinks they shouldn't be, specifically she should never be far from Fuyu because it's her duty and life purpose to protect him. I'm guessing Fuyuhiko telling her to act as if they're classmates and nothing more is halfway to avoid attention and keep things low, but maybe mostly to give them a chance to be their own people separate from each other. Because he knows their relationship as it is is unhealthy and he WANTS them to be actual friends, but boy literally cannot express how he feels unless it's a life and death thing, so "do it for the mission" it is.
So that's one layer of being overly involved, that Fuyuhiko tries to shake.....at first.
Then the Murder happens, and omg listening to the audio for the trial is so frustrating and also emotional. They're both 100% ready to die and kill so the other is safe (except, in the end, Fuyuhiko can't commit to it). So very very protective of each other to a destructive degree.
Then fast forward in the game, and when Fuyuhiko is losing it, he's about to throw everything away just for the sake of seeing Peko again and not wanting to face the possibility of not seeing her again (even though BOTH choices means he's lost her). They're all ready to make the self-preserving choice, but he specifically is making it for that reason. What's worse to me though, after all the stuff about wanting Peko to be her own person and refusing to see her as anything less, he's still ready to let Junko take over her body just so he can pretend she's still there. That's the opposite of where his development was going! At his worst, when he's pushed to the brink, he's ready to give up her autonomy if it means she's still "alive". That's pretty awful. Bad move, Hiko.
And then Peko (or at least the memory of her) along with Hajime snaps him out of it, Peko by telling him to grow tf up and make the right choice, or something along those lines. Yay we love to see it you tell em Peko
OK so that was just introspection on what we already know.
Now as for the future
I'd like it if Fuyuhiko, maybe with some help, would realize how complicated and messy and probably unhealthy his feelings about Peko are (and vice versa). He was willing to go way, way too far; for Peko's sake partially, but also for his own sake, because he's so intense about his friendship and loyalty.
I'd say it's a lot of him just not wanting to be alone or without his one person that's always been there, but also, he owes Peko a better life than what she got, so there's a lot of guilt there too. But my sweet boy, my darling shithead, just takes it so far. It's not healthy.
So, ideally, Fuyuhiko will spend some time with the Survivors and realize, with less life-or-death-intense-but-still-completely-solid friendships, that he might need to re-evaluate how he approaches Peko from now on.
In the event that she wakes up, man he would really be tested, but after the initial clingy period, might encourage her to seek out other people and develop her own support net that aren't him.
(Hajime, ultimate counselor, will probably have to mediate because God damn they're both so fucking intense about each other and have a hard time being apart.)
I'd *like* it if she managed to form some solid bonds with others (Ibuki is *right there*), to get that basing her entire lif and existence on this one guy isn't the right way to do it. It's not fair to him, even! He feels bad that his best friend sees him as a boss or a lord! She's gotta learn how to be healthy about her own boundaries, her personhood, and relationships in general. I'm assuming she never got the chance to do normal people shit long-term, so here's her chance! Go on silly dates, hang out with your friends, sleepovers, gossip, just!! Have a fun time tbh
Her an and Hajime might even become fast friends! He's everyone's buddy, had a total crush on her, and now they have Fuyuhiko as a mutual Close Friend. Imagine them swapping stories and making fun together aww. Her and Gundham would totally vibe too I can feel it. One Gundham-appointed animal companion, stat! Let Peko have like, an awful little purse dog or sth lol.
Like that extra scene where she splits a melon, I want more of that. Making people happy just because, and people valuing her and her skills at her own pace (not using her as The Sword Lady, but like, appreciating her talents when she decides to show them off; that includes other talents too, like tree climbing hehe)
Ideally, they both just get a little more chill about each other, while maintaining their very special and still super strong bond. They're still attached at the hip and love each other So. MUCH. But they know how to be apart, and maintain close relationships with others, maybe even date people. But they're always each other's #1, I think.
I have a headcanon that they both worry about what they were to each other during their memory gaps (Peko sees that he's missing the same fuckin eye and blames herself for seemingly not protecting him, Fuyuhiko remembers a bit more since he was awake longer and knows how delusional he was and how much he used Peko as an assassin). But it comes to light that actually they stayed together the whole time, as equals mostly, and Fuyuhiko has a tattoo (crossed swords) to confirm it (also one for his sister). So yay they actually never stop loving each other even when they're loopy <3
If I got any game facts wrong plz tell me the playthrough was so long and I can't remember things fully

okay hear me out tho i'm gonna tell u this is sad and why
your bond with someone goes deeper than family? family is, unless something is really wrong between family members, supposed to be one of the instinctually strongest bonds humans have (like why mama bears are a thing lol - even to their unborn children! by default, they love their child even if said child isn't even out of the womb yet! also why toxic family relationships are so complicated, because "it's still my [family member]"). like, by default, there's a bond (usually between immediate family members, i.e. extended family is not necessarily by default depending on interaction and frequency of interacting).
that can change, but things have to happen for it to change. there have to be actions involved to put a strain on that relationship. someone has to do something to lessen the bond or to sever it entirely (i.e. if someone has a bad relationship with their family, it's almost always due to issues that popped up throughout their lives).
from what we know about claude's family, uhhhh... you know, yeah, i'd say his relationship to his entire family is pretty shitty. aside from having siblings who were making active assassination attempts on him when he was a child, his parents sure as shit didn't care enough to make him feel loved or to even bother really trying to protect him. they basically left him to fend for himself when he was "old enough" because he needed to know how to watch his own back, yadda yadda... but for a child they don't need to be learning how to survive that shit alone.
if he was nearly killed, his parents should have hugged him and cried out of fear and worry, but he was left to patch himself up and get back up. children shouldn't have to go through that (unless it's a special circumstance like their parents are dead/captive/missing/etc). claude thinks his bond with someone he just met basically a year ago is more important than family he's known his entire life.
also, just saying "now that we know each other" isn't a very high standard. you can know someone and still not truly be connected, but he's been so starved for bonds his entire life that just generally knowing a person feels more meaningful to him. that's not to discount the bond he's feeling, but that the way he phrases it makes it comes across as this is the best he's ever had. mind you, at this point byleth has mainly just been a teacher to him. there wasn't all that much bonding - especially where claude was concerned, because he didn't really open up to byleth for most of that year.
generally speaking i do dislike the way byleth is propped up so damn hard in vw at claude's constant expense, and i think this may have been one example among many, but i do also think it's a case of byleth just generally treating him better than what he's known. even when he came to fodlan, he wasn't trusted among the nobility and was still kind of on his own. he used byleth, disregarded byleth's feelings, and wasn't open about himself in any way with byleth for the majority of the year.
like, that's all it takes for his heart to be connected to someone? knowing someone for a year or so who doesn't want to kill him and is generally kind to him?
i know claude's upbringing as per his relationship with his parents (affection wise) wasn't as god awful as shinon fire emblem "my mother never hugged me" my love, but they definitely went well beyond "tough love" and it shows. :'(
a bond with someone can certainly be more than family, but most times if someone is on good terms with family, they would treat those relationships equally, i.e. not putting the friendship ahead of the family. that kind of things means someone has reason to not see them equally and that the family has done something (or they have done something, but in claude's case it's the family who did something) to make them feel trust toward someone else more.
the fact that claude's parents not only didn't give him enough love but actively did things to him (or supported it by not stopping it - yeah looking at you Tiana) probably really did put cracks in his trust and feelings with his family. like, with the information we have about his parents, i don't even know if they'd be sad if he was killed.
would they feel insulted that someone took the life of royalty? probably, yeah... but i don't know that they'd feel all that sad about it, regardless of what uwu three hopes wants us to think about claude being the favorite child, because if he is then that means the king is absolute trash to all his children. if that's how he treats his favorite child? like forget it, no wonder shahid grew up to be a pile of stinky horse dung.
posting this in 2023. still angry claude hasn't been properly hugged. vicious and feral that little baby boy claude was suffering and not getting hugs and snuggies and crawling around in blankets.
ima be honest with you, i don't really even remember his grandfather doing much of anything for him/with him/showing particular care and/or love toward him and his grandfather was still better to him than anyone else in his entire blood family.

Jack O'Neill & Why Stargate SG-1 is the Best Show in the World
Listen. I have been fully obsessed with Stargate SG-1 lately and it has made me realize a lot of things about media these days so... strap in. I'm about to detail for you one of the major reasons that you should watch this show.
Thank you to @concentratedbastardenergy for watching it with me every night and to @floundrickthewayfarer for listening to me ramble about it as I make my way through all 10 seasons.
Under the cut because it gets long (:
This will be focused primarily on one of the show's main characters: Colonel Jack O'Neill.
Tumblr media
I'll start by saying that I am only on Season 6 so this is probably not entirely all encompassing but it is what I have picked up on from Jack since beginning this show.
Jack is a career military man with the United States Air Force. He has fought in wars, was held as a prisoner of war, and now leads SG-1 to explore the galaxy and defend earth against threats.
In order to really understand Jack we have to delve into a very important life event that has shaped who he is today. Jack was married to a woman named Sara but eventually their marriage fell apart which is what initially led him to go on the very first mission through the Stargate. The reason that his and Sara's marriage fell apart is that their son, Charlie, died in a very unfortunate accident when he unintentionally shot himself with Jack's unattended pistol. They rushed him to the hospital but he didn't make it, causing Jack to fall into a deep depression. Him and Sara couldn't reconcile with each other, Jack couldn't deal with his emotions, so they ended up getting a divorce.
This is important to really understand Jack and to understand why the way his character is now is so damn important. The spot he is in when he first begins this journey in Stargate SG-1 is very reflective of this event. I think it's important that Jack's story begins with losing everything he had.
First, let's take the average media image of a man like Jack O'Neill and compare it to what we see in SG-1. Typically we'd see a career military man in media today and he'd be the rugged, stoic, standoffish, tough-guy persona who can't talk about his feelings or express an emotion without a mass amount of prompting. Usually we see this type of character be not only closed off emotionally but also physically (unless it is with their romantic partner, typically.) This type of character would be your average tough guy who doesn't know how to process or express an emotion let alone ever do something utterly “humiliating” like hug someone or cry. The only person you will ever see them affectionate with is usually their partner and, occasionally, their children.
This is not at all reflective of Jack O'Neill.
Jack has been through unimaginable pain. He has lost a part of his life that he can never get back and it absolutely kills him inside. Despite how devastating this is he doesn't just hide the pain away forever. Sure, he keeps it close to his chest and he isn't talking about it 24/7, but he does process it with people he loves. He allows himself to feel it, to express that he feels it, to show that he feels it with his facial expressions and with his words. He is immediately connected to any child that needs help and it shows all over him. He was meant to be a father and that was taken from him and he feels like it is his fault. But it doesn't turn him callous. He expresses that fatherly attribute by taking care of his loved ones, children or otherwise.
Jack has deep friendships. He forms bonds with people and not only holds those relationships dear but also shows how much he loves them. He is a touchy person, believe it or not. He was outwardly in love with his wife, Sara, and was very physically affectionate with her. He is also physically affectionate with his friends. He touches them and hugs them and holds them when they cry and he doesn't act like those things are shameful. There are plenty of times when he ruffles Daniel’s hair, or gives Teal’c a good pat on the back, or hugs Sam. Jack has close, affectionate, relationships with the men and women in his life. He doesn't hesitate to give them affectionate pats on the back, hugs, touch their hair or faces, and he holds them when they need to be held. He is there for them emotionally and physically. Because he wants to support them and this is how he knows how to do that. He never treats these moments like they are out of his comfort zone or weird (which is something I see a lot from media nowadays.) He treats it as friendship, companionship, and his responsibility. He loves them. He makes sure they always know that he does.
There is a very charged moment where Daniel literally has Jack held at gunpoint, and is not in a great state of mind and after Jack talks him down Daniel starts to absolutely break down in front of him. He’s scared, he’s ill, he’s hurting. What does Jack do? He makes sure he’s safe and not hurt then Jack holds him and lets him cry. Because as a friend and a leader what else are you supposed to do when someone you love is breaking down? You hold them. You tell them it’s going to be okay. He helps because it is not only what he should do, it is what he wants to do. In an episode I watched not too long ago he hugs Sam so tight and for so long and the scene never becomes weird or tense or awkward because they clearly love each other, just like all of these characters do, and Jack is scared and cold and simply needs a hug. He is a compelling character because he is aware of his responsibility and duty but has such a commitment to also being their friend.
He is still a person who very much needs and wants to have close relationships and be physically affectionate and when he starts healing from his son’s death he doesn't deny himself those things. He forms those close relationships and he is outwardly loving. It doesn't take away his pain but it does help him feel like a person again, even after all of the tragedy he's experienced.
He doesn't have shame in being afraid or asking for help or crying. One of my favorite Jack scenes so far is with a young boy who says: "Mother says boys from your planet do not cry." And do you want to know what Jack's immediate response is? "That's not true." He goes on to say that crying is good for you. Crying is a natural response and it is not bad or shameful. This man is correcting a nasty thing we tell young boys and he is doing it by admitting that he himself feels emotions strongly and cries and so should this little boy. By the end of the episode he reminds the young boy that it is okay to be sad when you have to say goodbye to a new friend and that he will miss him just as much as this boy will miss Jack. He's healing parts of himself by making sure this kid doesn't grow up with the 'boys don't cry' bullshit that so many people grow up with.
He is shown to have good judgment and protectiveness and has a strong sense of morality tied to his respect for people and their autonomy. In one episode Jack fights back against the government invading another planet and exploiting its native people for a natural resource after they were denied access to it because of destructive and wasteful methods of extraction. He is outwardly angry about the decision to deceive the native people of this planet and he reminds the watcher of all the times we, throughout history and still to this day, have done this and continue to do it even though it is wrong.
The last episode I want to talk about is Abyss an episode in season six where Jack is being tortured for information and sees his dead (ascended??) friend, Daniel. Jack wants Daniel to do something to save him, something that Daniel apparently can not do despite having the power to do so. BUT he does want Jack to ascend. They end up getting into an argument where Daniel is trying to convince Jack that he is a good person. He is worthy of getting out of this. He is able to save himself. Jack swears, up and down, that if he their roles were reversed nothing would have stopped him from destroying everything in his path, taking down everyone who was hurting Daniel and not stopping until every last one of them were dead whether or not they were responsible for that suffering. He'd fight tooth and nail and hurt whoever he had to in order to save Daniel, there is not a single doubt in his mind. Daniel tells Jack that he is a better man than that, that he'd weigh options that weren't killing everyone around them. That Jack wouldn't burn the world down to save him, wouldn't cause that much suffering, and that Jack is fundamentally good. When Jack responds it is to tell Daniel that he's wrong. That everything that Daniel thinks about him, that he's good and kind and he'd find another way to help, is wrong. This moment, although it may seem unrelated, sticks out to me because this is the impact Jack has on people. Daniel sees the good in Jack. He knows Jack would come for him, that he'd support him, that he'd do everything in his power to help. Daniel sees in Jack what Jack always fails to see in himself. They have such a powerful bond, even in moments when they argue. Daniel doesn't doubt Jack's intentions, he doesn't doubt that Jack would come for him, he doesn't ever doubt him like Jack doubts himself. This trust is so indicative of the man that Jack is, of the way he impacts other people's lives, of the way he represents humanity and love and kindness and pain. And the love and respect Jack shows to other people directly impacts the way other people see him.
With the combination of everything above it would be typical to have this character or other characters question his masculinity and challenge it, perhaps even claim they are too emotional to be in charge, but when it comes to Jack this is not the case. All of those attributes are why people say he is a good leader and that he deserves to be in charge. He is shown as strong and dependable and loyal and logical. He is tough. But he is also sensitive, affectionate, and funny. He uses humor to cope and isn't afraid to admit when he's scared or sad. Jack is the king of micro-expressions but I can explicitly tell how he is feeling even with my own challenges with reading expressions.
Today's tv shows tend to shy away from this type of character and want to put a man like Jack into a box. The military man with a tragic past who scowls at everything and hasn't hugged someone in 25 years and doesn't have a close relationship with someone who isn't a romantic interest. I think that does such a disservice to this type of person. I've been missing something from TV shows today and I think Stargate SG-1 has shown me exactly what that is. It's characters who love each other and who show it and say it every single episode. It's story lines that challenge and develop each character past their stereotypes. It is storytelling where I don't have to guess what they're thinking or feeling because it is explicitly written on their face and in their body language. It is a plot that doesn't feel flat or reused. It is fun moments tossed in next to heart-wrenching ones. It is moral dilemmas and fights between characters that get resolved in a satisfying way. It is love and sacrifice and such curiosity and wonder for the world.
I'm convinced I didn't know what the found family trope really was until I watched this show. I'm glad that a show made in the late 90s created a character so authentic and well rounded that he feels like a real person and not a flat caricature. A man who had every opportunity to turn into someone closed off and callous that instead decided that the way out of the darkness was love. I think we need more 'Jack O'Neill's in this world. We’d be better off for it.
