yeah i got some recs! i'm gonna assume you mean less talked about titles rather than more well-known but quickfire popular recs i have are: chainsaw man, fullmetal alchemist, jjba, fruits basket, jjk and hell's paradise. but onto my other recs:

seinen

children of the sea**: a troubled teen named ruka embarks on the summer adventure of a lifetime after meeting two boys raised by dugongs at her dad's aquarium in the middle of a mysterious event taking place in the ocean.

the summer hikaru died: it's been months since yoshiki's childhood friend and secret crush, hikaru, went missing in the mountains for a week. hikaru's the same as usual, with his jokes and silly rambles and yet, yoshiki can't shake the feeling that whoever came back from that mountain, it wasn't hikaru. much to his horror, it wasn't. but rather than face reality and grief, yoshiki decides to play along with "hikaru's" act (body horror)

frieren**: a manga that picks up after the journey has ended. the demon king has been defeated and the heroes have saved the day after 10 years of traveling together. 10 years? that's not even a 10th of elf mage frieren's life. but as her companions begin dying one by one of old age, she finds herself desiring to learn more about humans and the short yet impactful lives they still manage to have

dungeon meshi*: when a dungeon raid goes terribly wrong and laios' sister gets swallowed by a dragon, those that remain in his party decide to get it back in blood by saving laios' sister before she gets digested. in the mean time, there's nothing wrong with gordon ramsay-ing miscellaneous ingredients found in the dungeon along the way, right?

and if you like manhwa or would be down for some manhwa recs these are titles i don't see getting recommended enough

concubine walkthrough: a scifi & philosophical spin on the otome isekai genre that asks 'what is reality truly?', 'is your life any less real if you found out all your experiences were a simulation?' and 'what is reality to you?' where protagonist lee yona finds herself stuck in a VR edition of a game she only played once

a wicked tale of cinderella's stepmother: usually when someone wakes up in the body of a villainess, she's the same age as the protagonists. mildred, on the other hand, is stuck in the body of this story's cinderella's stepmother. with no husband and three daughters to take care of, there's only one thing she can really doー build up her daughters' sisterly bonds with one another and make sure they marry into good families (or that they can at least live lives they're happy with)

tricked into becoming the heroine's stepmother: at least mildred got the body of an important character, daisy on the other hand? she's in the body of an NPC you never even see in the story. bright side? this is a story she helped write and after meeting the presently six year old protagonist's father, she and father of the year decide to team up for the ultimate mission: making sure his daughter never meets any of the love interests

inso's law: ham dan-i is in a bit of a pickle when she wakes up and her new school uniform is completely different than the one her mom bought weeks ago. there's a drop dead gorgeous girl next door who claims to be her childhood best friend. even worse, like something straight out of a drama, there are four heavenly kings that rule her school. by the end of the day, dan-i has no other choice but to accept the fact........ her real life has somehow turned into a web novel. even worse, she's a side characterー the main character's best friend

webtoons

plum: in a world where fruit stacking is a major sport, little plum decides to be the very best like no one ever was and moves to the big city to compete in the fruit stacking games along with making some friends and rivals along the way

webtoons that are probably popular enough if they have hardcover copies at my local bookstore but i wanna talk about it anyway

cursed princess club: as the youngest princess of the pastel kingdom, gwendolyn loves her family. her protective papa, her oldest sister maria who often awakes to woodland creatures doing her hair. her older sister lorena who makes flowers bloom with her every step. and her younger brother jamie who's so pretty, he sparkles. and they adore her just as much. but things come to a very reality shattering halt when their father introduces maria, lorena and gwen to blaine, lance and frederick, the princes of the plaid kingdom and gwen overhears frederick call her ugly, something she's never heard in her entire life. somehow, gwen finds comfort in a club full of cursed princesses (and one prince) who teach her how to start loving herself again

knowing how dan is when he likes something. how into it he gets. Learning all about that thing. it makes the origin of dnp even cuter to think about. how infatuated with phil he must have been. watching all his videos. remembering all the little cute/weird details of phil. like do we all not remember 2020 dan getting super involved in the inner workings and interior design... of a fish tank. (it was seriously awesome looking btw like no hate.) like he literally dropped everything and learnt a new skill in a matter of days for this fish. i also remember him saying how into figure skating he got because of yuri or ice. i believe phil once said in a liveshow that when dan likes something he gets super into it by looking up everything he can find about that one thing. so like imagine little fetus dan finding phil for the first time.

ughhh i knooow it’s so heartwarming and inspiring how excited dan gets. like he has so much love for things and people, truly beautiful to see 🥹 it’s clear from the beginning how he wanted to know everything about phil and spend as much time with him as possible. he wanted to find all the things they had in common, and keep learning together. very very cute 🫶🏻

i could honestly make a case for any wxs member in any role but i think the best fits for their characters are emu as the little prince, rui as the narrator, nene as the fox and tsukasa as the rose. or perhaps it's my emu favoritism talking

i'm not even sure how to justify or explain myself for each decision. source: trust me bro. emu has held on to her whimsy but lives in loneliness and rui has had his creativity stomped down throughout his life and nene's timidness gives way to her earnest desire to connect with other people and tsukasa cried and threw up because he's not special. does anyone understand me

again i think there's argument to be had for other roles, i think they could all potentially fit as the narrator in some way or another. or like, tsukasa as the little prince or nene as the rose or emu or rui as the fox could all work too. come into my inbox and send anons saying im super wrong so i have an excuse to talk about it more please.

What about Yuri on Ice kept you watching it? I've been looking for a new anime to watch and it looks good!

So... When Yuri on Ice premiered, I was watching episodes as they dropped in Sub on sketchy streaming sites. I was 15? I'm pretty sure. So... Young. And, as any young 15 year old girl in fandom... I started watching because of the cute guys and the shipping.

Of course, that isn't why I stayed. What made me stay, was the way this story was presented. I wasn't even into figure skating at the time, and yet, I was enthralled with the almost insider-look at the sport. What resonated with me was how we were introduced to Yūri. He was depressed, kind of in this limbo state. It resonated with me, having just transplanted into a new school for the first time and having left everyone I knew behind. Lost and depressed.

So, watching his development as a character was a HUGE factor in me sticking with the anime. Also... Watching a MLM relationship portrayed as so natural for the first time out of any other animes I had seen at that point in time. It wasn't overly sexualized, it was just... Nice. I don't know how else to describe that. I absolutely adored watching Viktor and Yūri's grow throughout.

Yurio my beloved. I love that boy. He's a brat and he's conflicted in parts and it just makes so much sense for him. Given what we know of his early childhood... God. Yeah that hits home for me and it's no wonder I clung to him like a whole lifeline. Honestly, even if you stripped everything else away that I love about the show... I would still watch religiously for him.

The music is phenomenal. Yuri on Ice (the song) easily moves me to tears still. I get SO emotional over some of the pieces.

I won't get into how it all hits as a now-skater, that's a whole different post in and of itself. And... The fandom was also a whole thing when the anime dropped. That made a huge difference for me, especially being in the cosplay scene. The fandom is still FAR from dead, don't get me wrong, but it was a lot more lively back in the day lol.

I could talk for hours about this show- it's not everyone's cup of tea, being a sports anime, but I highly encourage giving it a solid try!

Apparently, Arby's had a lot of anime references in their social media marketing at the time

There's also this Royce chocolate ad with letters from Victor and Yuuri to each other for Valentine's and White Day, which is absolutely adorable

i think that bucchigiri is sort of in that BL/BL-adjacent original anime spectrum (yuri on ice<-sk8 the infinity<-free!) based on the director's previous shows and general vibes. I think bucchigiri is kinda with sk8 in the middle of the spectrum of 'canon' queerness.

the way sk8 and bucchigiri are specifically formulated is to fall within sports anime genre conventions (which appeal to male audiences) while showcasing attractive and charming male characters with deep, near romantic bonds (appealing to a female demographic). (this isn't to say that boys like this and girls like that fyi, that's just how marketing generally works in the anime industry) this garners more of a fanbase than if the show were to market exclusively to one or the other.

unfortunately, this means shows like bucchigiri are unlikely to fully confirm anything due to the potential of stirring up controversy or alienating male viewers

similar to sk8, bucchigiri has and I think will continue to code matakara's and ara's relationship (and probably senya and ichiya's too) as somewhat romantic. i don't think they're going to make it canon, though.

the only chance I could see of having a canon queer relationship (or breakup, rather) is mayyyybe between senya and ichiya, since they're not the main characters and bucchigiri hasn't been especially afraid of being blatantly homoerotic lol

Perhaps some of us simply saw more YOI on our dashes than Voltron, even during Voltron's height. Perhaps you remember your primary fanom's wank as being more important and widespread than it was. Like, you still have Voltron as your blog theme. I think you're a little more connected to that particular fandom than the average tumblr user. Other people use the site differently.

While I know that videogames might not be everyone's cup of tea, let's just pretend that ALL your characters actually do like playing certain videogames. What kind of games do each of them like the most, and are they any good at it?

This one had me do some real thinkin'... 🤔💭

Guzma:

I think Guzma actually really enjoys playing any kind of co-op game with the grunts, even if he's not really good at them. But the grunts think it's funny when he starts raging at a game and he knows it. As far as games he plays alone in his freetime, I feel he prefers adventure/rpg type of game. He doesn't play a whole lot, but when he does find a game he likes, he plays it obsessively and tries to find every little bit of lore and secrets it has. He also always ends up becoming obsessed with games barely anyone's ever heard of and often he pesters Plumeria to play whatever game that is so he can discuss it with someone. (He also likes chill games and farming simulators like stardew Valley and animal crossing, but he's embarrassed about it and will deny it if asked)

Plumeria:

Plums likes rhythm games and strategy/puzzle based games mainly. It's definitely worth noting that she's, like, INSANELY good at them, too. Long story short, all the grunts know to never to take her bet if it invloves beating her high score. She also really enjoys any kind of game that implements any kind of branching path mechanic, so she's definitely played games like Zero Escape, Hades, and any of the telltale games multiple times.

Leon:

Definitely any kind of resource management game. So stuff like slime rancher, oxygen not included, factorio, terraria, et cetera. He's actually had to self ban himself from playing certain games because he missed too many league meetings literally playing for hours without realizing it. It bums him out because they were super fun, but he knows he can't trust himself.

He likes minecraft and other sandbox games. He likes playing co-op with friends, but when he's at home, he doesn't have a great internet connection.

Moon:

Like the little gremlin she is, she likes horror games. She especially likes making Gladion and Hau play horror games with her. Or rather, not telling them it's a horror game until it's too late

A & B:

B is stellar at platformers. A is the best at fighting games of all the grunts. They are both equally trash at racing games.

Kalani (oc):

When he was much younger, he spent a LOT of time playing FPS. By the end of high school, he kind of got bored with them and played more MMO RPGs.

Molayne:

Mo also like MMO RPGs. He also likes games like Elden Ring and Bloodborn. He has, very discreetly, played a variety of dating sims and, no, no one knows about this but him.

Kukui:

The professor plays a lot of battle royale games. He's also very bad about getting sucked into gotcha games.

“Why would I know?” he demands. “His grandfather is fine with it, but he needs to be training if he’s not going to embarrass himself his first year as a senior skater, and if he does that I’ll never hear the end of it. Go get him.”

“I don’t really think,” he starts, but Yakov walks away from him.

Viktor gets off the plane and goes to the only inn in town, wondering what on earth Yuri could be doing here.

He walks into the inn to see Yuri seated right there, skate choreography spread out on a table, and talking softly and sitting across from is Yuuri Katsuki! The man he’s maybe sort of in love with and dreams about every night! His soulmate!

Excuse me while I divulge into and project things onto one of my top three favorite characters of all time that I'm emotionally attached to and will never be separated from and have spent hours digging for his official lore in pitch bibles and whatnot. Dr n gin. Extremely specific ramblefun that appeals to no one but me under the cut

They really gave him like the most repulsive anti-representation of a dissociative identity. The thing is though it makes sense to me for him to have something like that. Like come on the rocket in his head is the most obvious metaphor for (if not literal representation of) trauma, and the metal plate splitting his face down the middle. Like it makes so much sense, it's a logical conclusion. What really makes my head spin coming to this scene years after realizing some Things about me is how one part of him fucking hates the masochistic and jovial part. One part is aware of the abuse he faces and scorns the other, the language the jovial one uses being childlike and everything is too much man. I don't know it just really mimics a similar internal thing I had happening when I started coming to terms with my fuckass memory and fuckass identity. I know it's not the other way around because I used to just think he had bipolar disorder hah. It's seriously funny how he only had this personality for like three games because they gave Nolan North the greenlight to go ape shit with him (and holy shit did he go ape shit, if you want to either love or hate a character, i suggest you look up all of his voice lines in Crash Tag Team Racing on YouTube and just listen, it's a ridiculous game and thats when they really interestingly scrambled his character) . He was straight up NOT like this in earlier games, it's almost as if his mental state degraded as the games went on rather than strange decisions made by devs. Don't get me wrong there's a ton of real life bigotry put into these games and it shows in this character. But with hat said I really love doctor N. Gin and I find new ways to lovw him everytime I revisit him, he really represents feeling like a disgusting evil little monster with irreparable damage to your brain, except the awesome thing is that I love him for that. I love him so much. My muse. I want to hide behind a corner and scare the shit out of him

Funny thing is I was living in Japan when Yuri on Ice aired and I was wondering why so many people were so confident that it aired in the early evening. I mean I remember having to learn how to use my TV’s built in DVR because there was no way I was staying up that late. Like there were a lot of PG13 tier at most shows airing in the AM hours too because the schedules are so jam packed and DVRs were already a standard feature for TVs there for a while

Yeah that's something westerners aren't familiar with (idk about Europe but America doesn't air shows that late) so I do not blame people for thinking that. A teenage girl (or grown Canadian man that doesn't do his research) is going to believe that yoi aired at 7pm or something. 2am is infommercial and 00s show reruns. I don't even blame people for not Googling, 2:30am sounds insane for something to air
