Renaissance Man (Genshin Impact)

Synopsis: It takes a lot to cure your boredom, so you end up catching hobbies and interests like they’re Pokemon. –and how Xiao, Venti, and Xingqiu react. Warnings: Reader is just good at everything idk, talks about specific hobbies to illustrate a point, reader is more artsy (drawing, physical crafts, etc), you’re a business dude, this is a very big ego stroke have fun, not proofread, verrrrryyyy indulgent :D GN Reader

Xiao

In all honesty, Xiao finds you annoying. At first. You were more overwhelming to him, and a bit too noisy. But he’s seen you around Liyue, and you’re pretty capable and polite otherwise, so he isn’t too bothered by your presence.

He didn’t indulge you in the beginning, as expected. But you were patient and with a lot of time on your hands, seeing as you were a wanderer who just took odd jobs and sold the products of your hobbies. You had long since taken up cooking, and hearing that the mighty adeptus Xiao favored Almond Tofu, you tried making it. Every time you stopped by the inn, you had a fresh plate of Almond Tofu that you’d leave out for Xiao.

Xiao was confused by your gifts. He was not a being who granted favors in exchange for gifts, so he wondered what your motives were.

But it was simple! Your journey to Liyue was both a pit stop on your way to the Chasm (exploring purposes), as well as to meet one of the less elusive Adepti (at least in the sense that his “base” was near mortals) to ask about the history of Liyue and its battles. The story books in the shops of Liyue were not enough to satisfy your curiosity, so you just had to ask from a primary source!!!!!!

Xiao did find you interesting despite your noise, he must admit, so he eventually warmed up to you, thanks to both that and your patience and gifts. You’ve learned to lower your volume and keep a steady speaking rhythm, and Xiao has come to enjoy your ramblings about random things, at least a little bit.

When you visit Wangshu Inn, you two sit on the topmost terrace and drink tea as you talk about your travels and the knowledge you’ve gained, and he even answers your questions about the battles he’s fought in or the details of Liyue’s history sometimes, though you never push further if you sense he’s uncomfortable.

He’s thought mortals to be interesting creatures, in the sense that it’s hard to understand their rituals and thoughts, and that sentiment hasn’t changed. The more he listens to you ramble about the fish species in Liyue compared to those in Mondstadt, or about the theory of the fake sky and how deep that rabbit hole actually goes, he gets more confused about how humans think.

But… (thanks to the traveller and the events of the Chasm and Xiangling’s cooking event, etc) Xiao has learned to just. Accept you. He has come to find your company enjoyable compared to the days he’s spent alone. When his own, negative thoughts come to cloud his mind, you always seem to be there to distract him with whatever nonsense you’re spewing (positive).

And you, happy that Xiao has warmed up to you, and him just becoming precious to you because of his nature, have given him gifts. Things that you otherwise would’ve sold, like teasets or clothing accessories or paintings, you’ve given to him. Xiao isn’t materialistic, but he appreciates the sentiment.

What he appreciates more, though, is the time you picked up an instrument for him. You once saw him play the flute, and decided that hey~~ What’s another hobby, yeah? You’ve got soooo much time before your departure to the Chasm haha! So you learned the flute! And though he finds it embarrassing that you saw him playing and decided to learn the flute because of him, he enjoys listening to you. He even wrote down what he remembered of that one song, long ago, and you have since learned how to play it. Not with the same feeling as he once heard it played, but passable. o7

With enough pestering, you’ve even got Xiao to learn how to paint and crochet, too! He had refused at first, telling you how such hobbies were too delicate for someone like him, but you didn’t listen. You figured you were close enough to him now to be able to bug him to do things with you, and luckily, you were right!

Overall, Xiao enjoys your company. You’re quite lovely, and the way you speak about your interests with such enthusiasm and smile when you’re engaged with is a sight for sore eyes. Xiao is also very happy, though he’d never ever admit it, that you’re so patient with him. He doesn’t like to imagine how dull his days would become again, if you were to leave and never pay him a visit. You’ve given him distractions and peace away from his duties and painful past. You’ve forced him to learn skills that he would’ve never picked up otherwise, and he likes it. Not that you’ve helped him find “purpose”, but you’ve helped him to see that his anyone can enjoy his presence (you, the traveller, etc etc 👀) and that his hands can do wayyy more than just fight.

Please delay your journey to the Chasm!!!!! 🙏

Venti

Woahhhh!!!! You’re so talented omg!!! Will you craft him a bottle for his wine? Maybe you can weave a picnic basket for your escapades together! Hmm? Basket weaving isn’t a hobby of yours? Well it is now! Don’t look so weary! Venti will join you in making some!

He’s short on mora, ya know? Your interest in arts and crafts comes in handy when you can make mora off it! He’ll be pestering you for stuff now!

But in all seriousness, he’s impressed! You pick up new hobbies seemingly every moment, not necessarily getting bored with the old ones, but getting burntout so quickly.

Hanging out with him made you interested in music as a whole, and you started to play the lyre and violin to pass the time. Sometimes, when you’re bored, you’ll join him as he sings for the public.

You’re not one for composing music, at least not yet, so you often paint your ceramics while Venti composes new ballads on his lyre. You never really plan what’s going to end up on the ceramics, so you often find yourself subconsciously painting the scenes Venti describes as you zone out.

Well, it seems Venti is your muse! Your adventures with him are frequent, so you find yourself indulging in your personal hobbies less often, but when you do, you’ve got a whole bucket of inspiration to use! His songs and rendezvous with you leave you breathless and fulfilled, and you wind down by sketching the moments that left impressions on you, or planning up a new embroidery piece.

As he is your inspiration, you are his. It’s lovely having a companion like you, who is so willing to go anywhere with him no matter what’s on the agenda. He likes how focused you can get when crafting or playing an instrument, you just look so serene. Perhaps the next song he’ll compose will be a simple one, praising that one person who can do anything well and looks so good doing it~ 😜

Venti loves when you take an interest in music history. See, he knows allll the songs!!! He can sing each and every one for you, and while he may not know everything about the song, he’s sure to know about the context of the song and the general time-period it was written. It makes him happy to see how interested you are in what’s basically the history of his people; he’s glad there are still those who care to keep the legacy of those long-gone going.

Venti is wise and he is old, but that does not mean he’s seen everything. One of his wishes is to explore every nook and cranny of this world, and through you, he can fulfill bits and pieces of his wish. He enjoys listening to your infodumps on anything at all, even if it’s about that one specific rock only found in one corner of the world which is your favorite. It’s still information about the world, and so he is grateful. Please keep talking to him about your interests! He also loves how blissful you look when you’re speaking about such topics.

Overall, Venti has so much fun with you that he can’t imagine life without you in it!!! He’s never felt this content before. Having you by his side as his muse, and telling him about all the things that you cherish and have an interest in, and connecting over the arts–those are things he wouldn’t trade for anything. Not even a bottle of wine! 😡🍾

Xingqiu

He’s got another person to gush about books to!!!! He’s so happy! Chongyun is great and all, but he doesn’t have the same passion for certain book series’ that he does! He is so happy he is crying sobbing shaking! He is recommending you books at every turn because he knows you’ll start reading them the minute you have a second to spare.

Your passion is immense, which he loves. You just get so interested and caught up in every little thing and he finds it adorable! (Careful, though. If you’re too adorable Xingqiu might start teasing you 😞) When you two are together, it’s a just a whirlwind of Xingqiu showing off his knowledge on trade and commerce and swords and martial arts all the while you look at him with awe and stars in yours eyes. Either that or you two are talking up a storm in the corner of some restaurant, tossing character analysis thoughts and theories on story development back and forth.

Aside from books, he indulges you in your other ramblings, engaging with you even when the topic doesn’t particularly interest him. It’s the least he can do when you take the time to indulge him!! Besides, perhaps some of this information could be of use to the Guild in some way?

He is impressed by your art skills, too! He thinks you to be very sophisticated, what with your beautiful pottery and paintings.

In fact, he was the one who brought up you selling your art. He prepared a permit for you and everything!

He wonders if you can write well, too, if you had ever taken up the pen while bored. You had, actually. During your travels, you’d sometimes write poems. Xingqiu finds them a bit… well, you’re not the best poet, but everyone’s a bit cringe (says the person whose book is beloved by all of Inazuma).

Overall, you’re very important to him!!!!! It’s so amazing to have someone to gush about your interests to, not someone who just listens, but is fully engaged in what you have to say. He enjoys indulging you in your interests when it comes to the Guhua clan and its arts, as well as the general details of the Feiyun Commerce Guild, because he also gets to show off.

Kaveh is my DPS for the team. Yes, I play favorites. You can tell Alhaitham; I'm sure he wouldn't care. I'm kidding, I love you too, Alhaitham.

He's always a WIP.

Bloom damage leaning, but I'm collecting a myriad of artifacts and weapons just for the sake of giving him a versatile wardrobe. Flower of Paradise Lost, Gladiator's Finale, Deepwood, and Guilded artifact sets all work for him. Depends on what you need. Some people on HoyoLab have used a Vermillion Hereafter and Nobelesse sets, too.

² Xingqiu

I thought I was insane for giving Xingqiu the Deepwood Forest set. But the Vermillion Hereafter set player proved me wrong.

He is now dedicated to Dendro.

Originally, he was going to have his standard set, Emblem of Severed Fate, but it dawned on me that "Deepwood needs to be in the team, but it doesn't need to be on a Dendro character.

He wields Sapwood Blade for the ER and EM boost.

³ Kuki, Shinobu

Shinobu. My beloved. The reason this team doesn't get SLAPPED or blow itself up from Dendro cores.

As I've said before, Shinobu's artifacts still need to be leveled up.

Before Xingqiu, Shinobu was going to wield the Deepwood set because, you know, "hyperbloom" means "Electro MUST be on the team." But then I wanted to build Thoma for burgeon, so Shinobu would be kicked from the team, and I would lose my Deepwood set.

This format makes her more flexible for other team comps.

FoPL also works... So says game8.

⁴ Al Haitham

There's nothing special about Alhaitham's build... Maybe replacing an ATK% sands for an ER sands, but he still has a Dendro dmg goblet and Crit dmg circlet.

I chose an ER sands because I wanted him to be the subDPS. He's a burst bot. He uses his skill and burst to spread Dendro, via running around, dodging, and attacking. Something the Zhongli shielders seem to not know how to do apparently./j

I also have LoFI but I gave it to my Ayato.

Disclaimer: As of Aug. In 2023, there are 66 million Genshin players with active accounts. Someone out there probably has the ultimate team for Kavetham/Haikaveh (whichever you prefer), and character builds, but I am sadly not the one. 😔 With that being said, I don't gatekeep. 😤 I encourage all my fellows to continue building characters and devising stratagems that fit their wants and needs, irregardless of the backlash they may get from meta-players.

It’s Just A Chocolate, Right?

Chongyun attempts to buy chocolate three times. Only one of them is successful.

Inspired by the song Shinsekai (New World) by BUMP OF CHICKEN! vaguely modern/school AU.

Today's the day he's going to confess!

So thinks Chongyun as he enters the candy shop, hoping to Rex Lapis that no one's already taken the chocolate he wants. He has a plan! First, he's going to buy that one chocolate that he can't remember the name to but he does remember that the wrapper is orange and it's stored in a box, so he has that going for him. Next, he'll write Xingqiu a note to tell him where to meet and when. Then after that, he'll wait for Xingqiu and hopefully not make too much of a fool of himself as he confesses and pushes the chocolate into Xingqiu's hand or hands. Knowing his luck, it's unlikely that he'll get the answer he wants, but he needs Xingqiu to know how he feels!

The shop is fairly crowded, which is expected for a holiday like Valentine's Day, but still it surprises him. Not just the people, but the heat emanating off of so many people. If he weren't so focused on his task at hand, maybe he'd lose control, and that would be bad. Chongyun makes his way through the people, all the way to the back of the shop, where he remembers for certain that this one chocolate he's looking for is there. Not at all to his surprise, there's still a few packages left. Fortunately, it's not on a high shelf so he reaches for it easily…

Only to be met by another hand. Familiar hand? Chongyun's gaze follows the arm all the way down to the face to see... Xingqiu. What? What's Xingqiu doing here? The heat from the store finally catches up to his face, and Chongyun is sure he's blushing, but Xingqiu merely makes eye contact with him for a single moment before smiling. Archons, his smile is beautiful. "Are you here to buy chocolate too?" he asks, as if the answer isn't obvious by the fact that they're both reaching for the same chocolate. Ah yes, now is a good time for Chongyun to remember that the chocolate he's planning on buying is, well, Xingqiu's favorite. Don't ask how he knows; Chongyun doesn't even know how he knows either.

Chongyun only nods dumbly, afraid of making himself look like a fool by saying something dumb. Xingqiu is always so smart and there's no way that Chongyun could ever catch up. Anyways, back to the chocolate at hand. Chongyun retracts his hand and lets Xingqiu take the chocolate, not out of love or anything nope. Just pure shock. He watches mutely as Xingqiu takes the chocolate gleefully and pays and leaves the store, and Chongyun doesn't think even once to buy his own chocolate.

Okay, so maybe today isn't the day that he's going to confess.

Today’s the day he’s going to confess!

So thinks Chongyun as he heads into the candy shop once again. The embarrassment from the first time he entered the candy shop is still fresh in his mind, despite that incident being weeks in the past. His plans are still the same, but this time, he knows where he’ll tell Xingqiu to meet him! Everyone likes going to the school rooftop, so Chongyun has made the decision to not do that. He’ll tell Xingqiu to go to the courtyard instead because no one else will think of confessing in the courtyard, and besides, it’s a short walk to the garden and the garden is far away from prying eyes. Maybe he’ll pick some silk flowers to give to Xingqiu, maybe he won’t, but that’ll be something he thinks about doing later. Now it’s chocolate time.

Chongyun thought that since the initial chocolate-buying crowd was already done by the time he comes back, it’ll be emptier in the shop. He is so very wrong. There are more people in the shop, and the atmosphere is even hotter and stuffier now. If he weren’t so determined to pull this off, he would’ve never come back to the candy shop so close to Valentine’s Day. Too bad he really is this determined to pull off a confession on Valentine’s Day. Since when did he become such a romantic? Probably since he fell for Xingqiu.

The chocolate is still in the same place, so of course, it’s an easy grab. He’s just about to take the chocolate off the shelf when another hand grabs his arm. Chongyun almost jumps, but if he did, he would’ve lost his last shred of dignity, so he thanks the Archons that he doesn’t jump. His gaze follows the arm back to the face of… his good friend Bennett. “What’s up?” Bennett asks, as if it wasn’t plainly obvious as to what is actually up with Chongyun. “Buying chocolate, I see! Is it for Xingqiu?”

Once again, Chongyun is left nodding dumbly at the question. He already told Bennett a while ago about confessing on Valentine’s Day and Bennett has been nothing short of supportive. In fact, it was Bennett’s idea to give chocolates, but he said that he didn’t know how to pick chocolates. Coupled with the fact that Bennett just has really, really bad luck, the poor boy doesn’t know how else he could support Chongyun besides just coming up with the plan. Chongyun is infinitely grateful for Bennett’s plan, and he is also grateful for Bennett keeping him accountable for such a plan because Chongyun is very close to backing out now. Once again, he retracts his hand, allowing Bennett to take a chocolate instead of him. “I’ll be giving this one to Fischl,” he says brightly. “It’s not really a romantic thing, but I think she’ll appreciate the gesture, y’know?”

Chongyun does not know, but he nods again anyways. Such is the nature of his good friend, he thinks as he watches Bennett head to the cashier and pay for the chocolate. He sighs.

Guess today isn’t the day he’ll confess then.

So thinks Chongyun, albeit with much less excitement than the other two times of walking to the candy shop before getting distracted by someone or other and forgetting to buy chocolate. This time, though, he’ll be certain to leave the store having actually bought some chocolate. It’s almost Valentine’s Day; he has to buy the chocolate now! He’ll give Xingqiu a much shorter notice now, but that’s fine because Xingqiu is used to spontaneous changes in plans. How does he know that, Chongyun doesn’t know, but he can feel it. Maybe he’s reading into Xingqiu a bit too hard. Maybe his infatuation is getting out of control. Just thinking of Xingqiu makes his heart swell and his face burn slightly, but not so much that it’ll trigger his congenital positivity. Hopefully.

The humidity of the store doesn’t help. How is it even stuffier compared to his last visit? How many other people procrastinated on buying chocolates like he did? Too many for Chongyun’s tastes, that much is certain. Fortunately, there’s still chocolates left on the shelf, so Chongyun looks around for any familiar faces who could so happen to want to buy the same chocolates as he does. After a quick glance, there seems to be no one, so he snatches a chocolate and heads to the cash register. Everything goes without a hitch, completely unlike his last two visits to the candy store.

It’s only after he leaves the store that things start going downhill. For some reason, Bennett is also back at the candy shop and this time he dragged Razor along with him. Does Razor even like chocolate? Chongyun wonders, but he doesn’t know enough about the boy to answer that question. Bennett chatters, talking about something along the lines of how chocolates aren’t always seen as romantic so it’s fine if he gives one to Fischl, right? Razor looks like he has even less of a clue as to what Bennett is talking about than even Chongyun, so it’s no surprise that neither of them have an answer to Bennett’s seemingly rhetorical question.

“Let’s head out then!” Bennett suggests brightly as always. With the chocolate now in his pocket, Chongyun can’t agree more. The crowds of the shopping mall and the stuffiness of the indoors is dragging him dangerously close to congenital positivity and he wants no one to be near him if that happens. Seems to be a small if and more like a big when, but Chongyun has self control.

“Hey, isn’t that—!” Bennett points out, causing Chongyun’s gaze to shoot up from the floor. He stares down the crowds before seeing an all-too-familiar wash of turquoise hair before his heart stops.

And then it starts beating faster and by the Archons, he needs to get out of this mall or else he’s going to lose it. Of course Xingqiu shows up on his third visit to the candy shop. Chongyun doesn’t know if he wants to run or confess, but Bennett’s suspiciously wide grin and his obvious comment of “it’s Xingqiu!” leads Chongyun to think that maybe, just maybe this could be a good time to confess. Assuming he doesn’t give in to his positivity because Archonsdamnit his face is hotter than the sun and the environment isn’t making it any better. Does he confess or does he not?

Bennett answers his internal question easily. “Do it!” he cheers. “No time like the present!” Chongyun questions his friendship with Bennett for just a moment before he starts forging his way through the crowds to Xingqiu. Why is this nerd in a mall by himself. Why is this beautiful bookworm in a crowded shopping mall by himself. Chongyun would ask more questions, but by the time his thoughts catch up to him, Xingqiu has already seen him.

“Chongyun!” he greets warmly, as if the mere mention of Chongyun’s name didn’t royally fuck him up. “Fancy seeing you here.”

Bennett whoops and Chongyun knows he only has one chance at this. He doesn’t know if it’s the positivity hitting or if this is actually how strong he feels towards Xingqiu, but he grabs Xingqiu’s hand and drags him into a smaller hallway. In the coolness, Chongyun can breathe, but with Xingqiu’s hand in his, no he can’t.

“Is something the matter?”

Chongyun can’t bear to look at Xingqiu in the face so he keeps his eyes to the ground. He fishes through his pocket for the chocolate he just bought with his free hand without letting go of Xingqiu’s with the other. He presses the chocolate into Xingqiu’s hand, looks up, ignores the blush on his face, and with a very straight face, he tells Xingqiu.

“I like you.”

Right. There. He said it. He actually said it, holy shit he did it. Xingqiu just stares back at him, as if his brilliant mind couldn’t process three simple words, but then Xingqiu smiles. Rex Lapis, he smiles as if he were the brightest thing in Chongyun’s world, which given his intellect, wit, future, and of course, that blessed smile, Xingqiu could very well be the brightest thing in Chongyun’s world.

Xingqiu blinks. Blinks again. Then he says, “Well, I’m glad you were courageous enough to tell me that. If I were you, I wouldn’t have known how to go about it.” A pause. Chongyun can feel his heart drop in the endless silence of Xingqiu’s hesitation. Please don’t reject me, please don’t reject me, please don’t reject me—

“Since you’ve already confessed, I suppose it’s only right for me to do the same,” Xingqiu says. “I like you too, Chongyun.”

Chongyun doesn’t remember what happens after that. Not even Bennett will tell him so he doesn’t know exactly how Xingqiu, his boyfriend, his boyfriend, got Bennett to keep a secret, but every time he asks Xingqiu what happened next, he only smiles with a sparkle in his eye. Damn that smile, but he can never bring himself to hate it.

As for his confession, it seems like the third time was the charm.
