I think a lot of what makes fanfiction so magical is writers taking the time to explore tiny elements that were imagined into existence in the source material and then abandoned. It's the deep dive into that t-shirt, the forgotten gift, the nickname, the spare key, the anger they swallowed down, the trauma they supressed, the love they denied, the story that wasn't mainstream enough to make it. It's the little things getting their moment to shine and I fucking love that and I will fight for it always.

Joker junior isn't the only kid in the joker's gang anymore.
Harley: This is your new babysitter I mean older brother, You know Mr.J and I can't just spend all our time with you Junior. Why don't you and Trixter get yourselves introduced while playing somewhere away from here, Kay bye!
Trixter(Danny): ...
JJ:...
Trixter(Danny): I like your nails they are pretty.
JJ: *growling and hissing*
...
Harley tugging the child leach with junior in it: it don't bite.
Danny: Yes it do!

I actively smash canon with a hammer until it shatters into a million pieces and put together the story I want to tell from the shards

I haven't written smut in a while, but I had an experience recently that makes me want to, but in a way I haven't really seen before. I want to write smut where both people have a good time together, but things go wrong. Smut where the condom doesn't fit right, and someone's thigh cramps, and they laugh, and they massage the muscle and they kiss. And they cuddle and they kiss, and they get worked up again, and they try again, but this box of condoms really sucks, and now the other person's calf if cramping, and it's okay. Because they both know this isn't the last time they're going to do this, and it's okay if it doesn't go perfectly. Because it's fun, and it's easy just being together.
I don't know if there's an audience for this fic, and I don't know if I'll write it. But I want to.

Oh my god. I’m writing the first draft of the chapter that leads directly to the scene that is the ENTIRE reason I started writing Feeding Alligators and I’m
Tumblr media
The fic is meant to be funny. I also like action and friendship and eventually romance. But the best way to enhance a chocolate cake is with a shot of bitter coffee, and that means there’s gonna be some fuckin’ ANGST. It’s necessary! And will, with time and effort, work out. But the sadness is coming, y’all, and we’re all gonna have to sit in it.
(I swear to you it does get better though).

One of the obvious differences between writing fic and writing original has to do with the audience, the reader.
"Know your audience" is basic, cliched writing advice. It's useful, sure. But what I'm getting at is something about how this "knowing the audience" changes the experience, rather than the content, of writing.
Writing fic, we know the reader inside and out. We know what they love, we know what they expect, we know what they get pissy about, we know what they'll overlook. We know the common tropes and we're aware if we're choosing to invert them. We know all the choices other writers make that coalesce into fanon. We decide whether to follow or challenge fanon, knowing that our readers also know all of this and know that we've made those decisions. If the fandom has been around awhile, we know the history of the fandom drama—we remember the same incidents and triggering words or themes.
When we sit down to write fic, we are writing for this reader. And it takes very little effort to remember this as we write along.
It's why, when my partner first asked to read my fic, I said, sure, but first you're going to need to read some other fic. Like, you need to understand the genre, the whole deal. If you don't, you can't read it as it's meant to be read.
Contrast original writing: who is the reader? We have some idea, but it's vague in comparison. Fantasy readers? Monster fuckers? The people who are reading Fourth Wing? Whatever sense of this elusive 'reader' we have, that group is more heterogeneous than a ship fandom. We can never have as solid a grasp on their expectations, where they'll be willing to follow you, when you're challenging their patience, where they are dying to go.
Having a clear understanding of this dynamic can only help. If we're floundering in the writing process, we can change our perception of "The Reader." We can even pick a specific person to whom we are writing. (We can always read with an eye toward a wider readership at a later stage.) We don't have to write for every single person who might pick up our book, should we ever finish it. Even if our experience writing fic has been one in which we are writing for the entire ship fandom that we know so well.

Every few days the last two months, Google photos will be like "remember this day last year" and it's something like this:
Tumblr media
...and I'm like fucking hell, that's when I was so sick I thought I was dying and then there's this whole 3 week period where I was so burnt out I don't even remember posting CH2 of BOD or any of the comments, and I was writing about 30k a week.
A fucking WEEK.
Reliably rewarding productivity is extremely addictive, especially when it's something you love but please take it from me, who nearly died, who is still recovering from what I call the YD sickness from over a year ago, just because you CAN write a lot does not mean you must, or even should. Our bodies love us and want to help us. Don't ignore them, no matter how great it feels to be in "the zone" of continuous writing/posting/engagement.
Everything passes. Everything changes. Attention fades and interest wanders and creativity evolves. There will be other stories. Your health comes first, mental, physical and spiritual.
💜💜💜
