Karla Homolka and The Deal With The Devil

Karla Leanne Homolka is a Canadian serial killer and rapist who, with her then-husband Paul Bernardo, raped and killed at least three minors between 1990 and 1992. Homolka’s case gained worldwide notoriety when she entered a plea bargain referred to as a ‘deal with the devil,’ in which she was convicted of manslaughter in the rape and murders of three young girls, including her own sister. She received a sentence of just 12 years. Bernardo was convicted of murder and received life imprisonment. A psychiatrist described her as "remains something of a diagnostic mystery. Despite her ability to present herself very well, there is a moral vacuity in her which is difficult, if not impossible, to explain." Homolka painted herself as a victim and unwilling accomplice, both of which helped her to strike a deal. She claimed she was also a victim of abuse and forced to take part in the murders. Videotapes of the crimes emerged, having been withheld by Bernardo’s inexperienced lawyers, after the plea bargain and showed Homolka to have been a very willing participant. She stole drugs to administer to her younger sister so that she and Bernardo could rape her. There was huge public outrage over her sentence and release from prison in 2005. During the summer of 1990, Homolka stole drugs from her workplace (she was a veterinary technician) and spiked her younger sister, Tammy’s, dinner, Bernardo then raped the young girl until she began to wake up. Karla stole different drugs from her work and drugged Tammy again with horse tranquillisers. Bernardo and Homolka raped Tammy while she was unconscious, Tammy later died from choking on her own vomit. The pair hid the evidence, redressed Tammy and covered up her death. Their next known victim was Leslie Mahaffy, a 14-year-old girl who was kidnapped, drugged, raped, abused and murdered, they hid the young girl's body and then dismembered it and encased it in concrete. Videotapes showed Mahaffy was held, repeatedly raped and tortured for 24 hours by the couple. The pair abducted 15-year-old Kristen French in 1992, they held her captive for three days torturing and raping her before murdering her and dumping her body. Homolka is now free and has remarried, marrying the brother of her lawyer.

Joanna Dennehy

Joanna Christine Dennehy is a British serial killer who is known to have had murdered three men and attempted to murder two others. She is thought to be one of three women to receive a whole life tariff in the UK.

Dennehy was born in Hertfordshire, UK and grew up nearby. She was described as a polite and sensitive child who began to change in her mid-teens when she started skipping school, drinking and taking drugs. Dennehy ran away from home when she was 16 and never returned. She was an absent mother of two young children at the time of her killing spree.

On 19th March 2013, Dennehy killed her first victim. On the 29th she killed again, targetting a male property developer. His body was found the next day, Dennehy had dressed the corpse in a black sequinned dress. She killed another man on the same day as her second victim. After the killings, Dennehy was driven by an accomplice to Hereford where she stabbed two more victims, both of whom survived.

Dennehy stabbed men for 'entertainment,' she is quoted as saying, 'I want my fun. I need you to get my fun.' She also later told a psychiatrist she found killing people 'moreish' and 'got a taste for it.' Dennehy was described as sadomasochistic and lacking in the normal range of human emotions.

Dennehy pleaded guilty to 3 charges of murders and two attempted murders. She was sentenced to life imprisonment with the judge recommending she should never be released. Two men, who acted as accomplices, were also incarcerated.
