The Origin & Evolution of Correspondences in Witchcraft

If you’ve been a witch for a while, you’ve probably asked yourself: where do correspondences come from? Who decided that lavender was good for calming, or that obsidian was good for absorbing negative energy? Where does the concept of correspondences come from in the first place? To answer these questions, we must first look at something called “correlative thinking”: Marcel Granet (1884-1940), a French sociologist, coined the term “correlative thinking”, which can be defined as “thinking of an item of one class by correlating it with an item of another class”, typically organizing and relating “natural, political/social, and cosmological data in highly ordered arrays or systems of correspondence.” Sound familiar?
Correlative thinking takes many forms throughout religion, philosophy, and humanity – even showing up as early as Mesopotamia, where they believed events on earth ran parallel to events in heaven: “each city-state had its own patron god and every change in the balance of power between the city-states was seen as the direct reflection of a change in the relationship of the gods.” (Cavendish, pg. 12) In ancient Greece and among Hellenic philosophers, they came up with the “macrocosm/microcosm” analogy, which describes the relationship between the smaller, human being (the microcosm) with the much bigger, seemingly infinite cosmos (the macrocosm).
This correlative thinking is prevalent in many magical texts throughout the years – including The Emerald Tablet (late 8th-early 9th century), The Picatrix (a 9th century Arabic grimoire), The Key of Solomon (1312), and the Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1533). After the publication of The Three Books of Occult Philosophy and the boom of new-age spiritualism in the 1970s, there have been a massive number of publications related to witchcraft, correspondences, ritual magic, and more. For the purpose of this post, however, we’ll be focusing on these foundational texts to better understand the evolution and origin of correspondences.
The Emerald Tablet, dated around the late 8th-early 9th century, is one of the most highly influential texts within the philosophical and occult realm. An English translation of a line of text within The Emerald Tablet provides one of the most popular terms among new agers and modern pagans: “That which is above is like to that which is below, and that which is below is like to that which is above”. A shortened version of this phrase, “as above, so below”, can be found in Helena Blavatsky’s work, Isis Unveiled (1877), where it became massively popularized among the modern pagan community. This phrase, along with terms related to correlative thinking, tie back to many cultures – including China, India, and more.
The Picatrix, 9th-century Arabic grimoire on astrological magic, is yet another influential piece of text. This text contained astrological magic, magical potions and spells, and different Hermetic, Neoplatonic, and Aristotelianism philosophical passages – and it also included the explanations of links between planets and intangible objects such as colors and perfumes/fragrances.
After a few series of translations in the 12th and 13th centuries, the information within the Picatrix (and other sources) were recorded and arranged by Henry Cornelius Agrippa (1486-1535) in his work, Three Books of Occult Philosophy in 1509 (not being published until 1533). From there, Dr. John Dee (1527-1604) expanded on Agrippa’s work in the 1580s and 1590s.
Shortly after, in 1620, the Magical Calendar was published, which compressed much of the previous material. This calendar, amazingly recorded on one page, “contains tables of correspondences arranged by number, from one to twelve. The material is based largely on the extensive tables in Agrippa, book II, but goes beyond this, especially in its inclusion of sigils.” (Skinner, pg. 14)
Moving onto another incredibly influential text, The Signature of All Things, published by Jakob Bohme in 1764, covers a similar concept to correlative thinking known as ‘the doctrine of signatures’: God created everything on Earth with a “signature”, or sign, that tells you what that object’s purpose is. The idea is that any plant, herb, or object on earth should resemble what it’s purpose is – for example, walnuts (which look like brains) are used for brain health, and tomatoes (which are red, plump, and contain ventricles like the human heart) are used for heart health. Obviously, this concept was adopted in the context of medicinal use – by looking up an object’s signature within this book, a physician could theoretically find treatments for specific illnesses. While the contents of this book (and similar texts) have been debunked as pseudoscience, the influence of the doctrine of signatures is prevalent in witchcraft correspondences today.
In 1888, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded, and during that time S L MacGregor Mathers (1954-1918) and Dr. Wynn Wescott (1845-1925) prepared knowledge lectures for the Order, which eventually led to the generation of a Book of Correspondences (unpublished). According to Adam McLean in his edition of The Magical Calendar, this book circulated among members of the inner order of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and was later published by Aleister Crowley as his own work, Liber 777 (1909). Meanwhile, in 1908, The Kybalion (an anonymously written text, though often attributed to William W. Atkinson [1862-1932]) was published, including topics like “The Principle of Correspondence” and “The Planes of Correspondence”.
From here on, we have an uproar in magical texts, thanks to the new-age/spiritualism movement of the 70s and 80s – popular authors like Gerald Gardner, Scott Cunningham, Ray Buckland, and many others published works on the subject of magic, often including their own correspondences, typically influenced or inspired by the works of Crowley, Mathers, and Atkinson. Of course, the contents of these modern texts are what is most recognizable to practitioners today – we usually find tables of information, relating astrological signs, herbs, planets, feelings, colors, and more to their “meanings”: protection, anti-stress, happiness, love, etc.
As it stands, correspondences are a by-product of the ‘correlative thinking’ concept we covered earlier – this correlative thinking shows up in Mesopotamia, and evolved throughout magical texts and grimoires, eventually becoming these “tables of magical correspondences” that we are familiar with seeing in modern witchcraft and pagan books and resources.
As I round off this post, I want to share a quote from Richard Cavendish in his book, The Black Arts: “Man is a tiny replica of the universe. If two things are naturally associated together in the human mind, which is an image of the ‘mind’ of the universe, this is evidence of a real connection between the two things in the universe. Many of the important magical analogies and connections are not natural to most people’s minds today, but have been handed down by tradition from the remote past. This enhances their value for occultists, who believe that humanity was a great deal wiser in these matters in the remote past than it is now.” As practitioners, particularly modern practitioners, I feel we put too much emphasis on older concepts and traditions. While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with sticking to traditions and building off of older magical systems, I think it’s just as important that we work on our own magical systems – what does the color red mean to you? What about the planet Jupiter? Find out what works for you – you may find that it makes you feel more connected to your craft and your practice, and your workings could become more powerful, too.

Intermediate Witchcraft: Next Steps
So, you've done your homework on the basics, and you've practiced the early skills. What's next? Where do you go from there? How do you learn more? Well, there are several factors that go into intermediate witchcraft along with several routes to take, and I'll explain a bit of that here.
Research
Part of the issue with moving into more advanced magic is that most available books cater to beginners. That is because of a few reasons that I'll get into further in the post, but that does leave the issue of how to find more advanced information still. This is where deep-diving into specific topics will serve you well.
There are going to be few if any 'Witchcraft 201' books out there, because more advanced knowledge is not going to be that generalized the way introductory knowledge can be. However, if you look into specific topics, there are a lot more books. You don't have to specialize in one area either - you could look at books from as many fields as you'd like: deep-diving into astrology, herbalism, tarot, curses, whatever you'd like. Growing your knowledge in a specific area will make you more advanced overall as you expand your knowledge base.
Many of the more advanced texts are also going to be much drier than the popular books for witches just starting to learn skills - historical texts, academic papers, etc. So, look beyond what you can find on the shelves of the most popular bookstore in town as well. I'd recommend looking into databases like JStor, Google Scholar, and even university databases to see what you can find there. As always, consider who is publishing the information, what biases might they have, and what may be inaccurate or culturally appropriative when taking in new information to stay accurate, safe, and get the most out of the information you find.
Mentorship
Another route some people take is finding a more advanced mentor when they are struggling to progress on their own. This is one of the reasons why some of the more advanced information is not widely published as well, as it is not always appropriate for the information shared through mentorships to be widely spread. In some cases, this is because it is part of a closed practice that you have to be initiated into or taught directly, and in other cases it's because the information is personal to the mentor.
Still, there are pros and cons to going this route and it's all based on who your mentor is.
Some pros: you have someone experienced in witchcraft who can guide you more personally than a widely available book and who knows your personal practice very well - and who can share information, experience, etc accordingly.
Some cons: your mentor has only one perspective out of a vast array, they have biases that are in their practice as a result of their practice being their own, and they have intimate access to you and your spiritual life because of their role.
My personal suggestion to anyone considering this route is this: do your research on who you are accepting as your mentor, remember that what they teach is their practice not the practice, and even consider having multiple mentors over time to diversify information and beliefs that you learn. Your safety and wellbeing are paramount, so never accept someone as a mentor lightly, as having that kind of role in your life is a heavy responsibility and some may abuse that kind of access to you.
UPG
UPG stands for Unverified Personal Gnosis - or unofficial information gained through personal experience. This is in my opinion the primary reason there aren't more widespread 'Witchcraft 201' books available, as a lot of the information those books would contain is obtained through personal experience rather than from official sources. This is also why many witches begin to talk less and less about the more advanced aspects of their practice, as UPG generally comes from experiences that become more and more personal to the witch in question.
Along that line, your practice will primarily continue to grow through personal experience of your own and continued practice. Books and teachers will only take you so far before you have to gain knowledge yourself and get better at the skills on your own. So, at a certain point, significant portions of your own practice will become UPG as well.
Many witches are fine sharing some of the less personal aspects of their UPG with others, which is how new information and ways of doing things still spread. Offline, I've had multiple witches share with me parts of their own practices, for example, which have influenced the way I practice - and vice versa. However, each of our practices were still different from each other, due to the UPG each of us has and our different approaches to practicing.
Understandably, it can be frustrating trying to figure out where to go once the guidebooks most of us start out with are no longer applicable or available. So, one of the most valuable pieces of advice on how to continue to progress that I ever learned is this: never stop asking 'why'. Why does this mean that? Why do we do that? Why is this done that way? Why is this a common thing but not that?

March 2024 Reading Wrap Up
I got bronchitis and my period at the same time in March, and then spilled tea on my computer, so March was a very stressful time for me. Regardless, I managed to read 10 books! And honestly, overall, this is one of the better months - the lowest I've ranked a book is 6/10, which is damn good considering the absolute bullshit I usually read.

Tomb Sweeping | Alexandra Chang
I read this book while sick. And boy howdy, did that make it a weird experience. I get what it was going for, but it really wasn't my vibe. It just felt like everything was...unfinished. Which was the point, I suppose, but it was still annoying.
7 to 8/10 - Good With Caveats
What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality | Daniel A Helminiak
This is a very short book compared to my usual reads, topping at 152 pages. And I appreciate a book that gets straight to the point and analyzes the historical context around various works, particularly religious works. Good job. My only complaint is some editing issues.
Born to Love, Cursed to Feel | Samantha King
This was a poetry collection and was the only other book I read while sick, and boy howdy did I have a time of it. I spent most of the reading just...putting post-it notes in and nodding along to the lines. It was a surprisingly good book, considering I found it in the back alley version of a book store.
Southern Cunning: Folkloric Witchcraft in the American South | Aaron Oberon
Look. This is not a 101 book. It's not a 102 book. It's not even a 201 book. It simply is. And as much as I enjoyed it and enjoyed reading it, the fact that I spent most of my reading time fixing the editing means that I cannot, in good faith, put this any higher than an 8 out of 10. Dear Aaron Oberon, if you ever read this, PLEASE give me access to the original file so I can fix your punctuation and spelling mistakes. Sincerely, a fellow Southerner.

I am still so fucking feral over this series. I love them so fucking much. I want them all to be happy but I also like seeing their shenanigans. Unfortunately, though we're at 26 published volumes, we've reached the end of the ones in Missouri Evergreen that I may access. I'll either have to wait and hope that someone gets them, or I'll have to bite the bullet and buy them myself.
Not Pounded By Anything: Six Platonic Tales Of Non-Sexual Encounters | Chuck Tingle
This is my first expedition into the erotic Tingleverse after reading some pieces of the horror Tingleverse in Straight and Camp Damascus. And I really, really like this book. It's 77 pages and is such an easy read. Godspeed, you glorious bastard.

Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft, tenth edition | Janet Burroway
I found this in the free section of a bookstore in the middle of nowhere, and let me tell you, it is now marked up one side and down the other with highlighter, because I needed it. There are so many good parts of this book that it's genuinely one I would recommend to people who are trying to figure out why their writing feels flat.

First, I want to congratulate the author on what is possibly the coolest name ever.
Second, if you're an occultist, polytheist, witch, magic practitioner, or in any other way affiliated with things beyond or within mortal ken...get this book. It's making me rethink a lot of my own experiences with my craft and my religion, but in a good way.

Don’t mistake Nephthys (287) for Isis (42, h48). Isis is a mother goddess of witchcraft and is about inspiration. Nephthys is dark mother goddess and really turns you on. After you mistake it Seth (86551) hurt can’t handle it and kills you and scatters your ass sucking essence all over the internet.
It looks a lot like Isis doesn’t it? There’s no one that wins in this one, buddy. Except maybe jealous boy. But not really.
Who is jealous boy? We don’t quite know yet. Testing still in progress. Will update. Don’t mistake her.

The amount of people who nonchalantly decide to regularly eat foods that they are allergic/intolerant to, stresses me out.
Like hun, your "mild" allergy to that fruit you like could very easily to into an anaphylactic reaction and have you dead.
That food you're intolerant to that fucks up your stomach every time you eat it, that you still decide to eat every day, is raising your risk for digestive cancers and malnutrition issues so much.
Like, if you know this and decide to keep doing it, more power to you. You make your own decisions my friend. But please... make informed ones.

My #1 post of 2022
I've known I that I'm nonbinary for a while. Started figuring that out in college, which feels like a lifetime ago. I hadn't known my entire life, but that was more of a pebble than a pothole on my road to self-discovery. I went through a moment of "am I trans enough to call myself trans?" What a funny thought, looking back on it.
Coming to terms with being transmasc though? That was an entirely different thing. My gender felt weird. It felt queer. But masculine? No. I had no connection with masculinity. I felt just as uncomfortable with masculinity as I did femininity.
Or so I told myself—and others occassionally, when I wanted to emphasize my gender's queerness, its otherness, its void-like ambiguity; when I wanted to make sure they didn't just swap out one half of the binary for the other.
Looking back, I can tell something wasn't sitting right, something was nagging at the peripheral of my self-understanding. I remember finding a lot of comfort in butchness at this time. I am so thankful for butches for that safety in exploration, and the gentle nudging into queer masculinity.
But it wasn't really until dear friend of mine, new to my nonbinary-ness, began swapping the more feminine-coded compliments and titles for distinctly masculine ones—it wasn't really until then that my transmasculinity took root to blossom in me.
And you can spare me the essay; I can read my own words. "I wanted to make sure they didn't just swap out one half of the binary for the other." Hear me when I say that I could feel it in my soul that they did not do that. I could tell—and I know I am not the only one who can—when "handsome" was said queerly.
It is not a coincidence that I only give my full set of pronouns to those who I can trust to see the queerness in "he/him." I withhold those for my own safety, though in the process, I feel like I am withholding part of myself. Because the euphoria I get when I can be nonbinary, genderqueer, transmasculine, is like no other I have felt before.

to introduce you to my blog and the question I’ll be answering as I continue on, keep reading below!

who am I?
My name is Rheanna, and I am about to be a senior at Nazareth University (yes, we are officially a University, now!)
I study History and Italian with a minor in Museums, Archives, and Public History
I studied abroad during the summer of 2022...twice!
I spent 12 days in the United Kingdom as part of a Museums trip, traveling through England and Northern Ireland and seeing historical landmarks and museums.
I returned home for a short time only to cross the ocean again for a five week program in Pescara, Italy! I visited famous cities and was able to practice the language I had studied for eight years at that point, all while immersed in the culture.

At Naz, all students are required to create an original project as part of their “Core Milestone Experience” where they choose three diverse courses they have taken and create a project surrounding them and an “enduring question.”
For this project, I wanted to make sure I encompassed my interests with an enduring question that was tailored to me, depicted through courses I have taken. With this blog, I will be asking…
How can we study history through a modern perspective of diversity, equity, and inclusion?
For my three courses, I chose these:
HIS-260 Women & Witchcraft
Taught by Prof McCane, I was able to examine witchcraft from antiquity, to the European Witch Craze, the Salem Witch Trials, to modernity; we looked at how different groups were treated through the lens of witchcraft.
PHIS-360 21st Century Museums in the UK
This is the course I took while on my study abroad to the UK, with Dr. Kneeland and Dr. Albright. I looked extensively into how museums present information in the 21st century by visiting countless museums and historical sites.
WGS-201 Introduction to Women’s & Gender Studies
This course, taught by Dr. Albright, introduced me to important literature on intersectionality and feminism that has helped me in finding the language I need for a project like this.

Armor Champions - Season 4 - The Grave Arc - Episode 201 (Do Not Copy)
In the living room of a small wooden house, Jede of the Cosmic Fire stood in front of Camerion Martin and his parents as the possessed Billy walked toward them.
A worried Jede held the younger Camerion in his arms as Camerion's father Jonathan pointed his small black gun at the wicked Billy.
"Get back!" yelled Jonathan.
Billy gave a demented smile as he continued forward. And Jonathan fired a bullet from his gun.
"STOP IT!" yelled Jede.
Suddenly, a small ball of white energy flew in from the front opening and melted the small bullet into liquid which faded away. Another small ball made of the same energy fired at the possessed wizard. Billy was forced onto the wall by the right side of the family. And he fell onto his knees.
After that, a young woman wearing white armor revealed herself to the small group.
Jede soon noticed that the dark wizard had mysteriously made his escape.
Then both Jede and Camerion flew with the new champion in white armor away from the small neighborhood.
"You're Detective Nonaka's sister?" yelled Camerion.
"His twin sister, yes," answered Kylie. "I am Kylie Nonaka. But as an Armor Champion, I am the Champion of the Wind and Flight. I am Kylie of the Sun Light."
A calm Jede shook his head and asked "Are you a detective from the Space Police as well?"
"Yes I am," replied Kylie. "Rico and I took the exam on the same day. And we both became detectives during the same week."
"That must mean..." implied Jede. "...you are also a bio-android."
"I am," answered Kylie.
Then Jede asked "Why have you come?"
"Rico informed me of the situation," Kylie responded. "You were picking up the kid there -- Camerion Martin -- from his home. But you were already found out by Billy Williamson."
"Truly?" questioned Jede. "Did Rico tell you more about what has happened?'
"Billy's mind," Kylie continued. "It was taken over by the darkness of Tao Magic, a well-known dark version of witchcraft."
"Damn!" commented Camerion. "The detective told you everything!"
"Pretty much," replied Kylie. "This evil is searching for scientist Trey Chaolan who was the one who created both Daiyoo and Cale. And Trey is the one Billy wants for murdering his girlfriend, Carla Lewis. Your team is trying to keep Billy from killing Trey, even if it means destroying your own friend."
"That sums it up, I guess," said Camerion.
"Do you have a problem with killing Billy as well?" asked Jede.
Kylie faced forward and answered "I have no issue if you have no other choice."
"What?" cried Camerion. "Jede! You're willin' to kill Billy? He's your friend!"
Jede lowered his head and replied "That is only if we don't have an alternate solution. I made it clear to the others."
And an angry Camerion told him "I know my brother wouldn't want this."
"I don't like this at all," implied Jede. "I do not even like saying this. But we may have no choice if we cannot stop him. And I am certain Billy would want the same."
Camerion lowered his head and said "I still think it's wrong. I'm sure there's a way to reach Billy. You all just need to think of something."
Kylie responded "There are two ways to stop your friend from doing this. The first is finding his weak spot and exploiting it. The second.. The second is putting Billy Williamson down."
Jede shook his head and replied "Understood. We will talk to Billy first. We must try to get him to see reason."
Inside the old warehouse in Violet City, the four champions continued to guard Trey Chaolan until the door at the other side had melted into liquid. And a familiar foe walked into the room as the champions stood in front of Trey.
The wicked Billy gave out a smile and asked "Were you all waiting for somebody?"
Rico of the Lake Kaires directed "Relena! Take Chaolan and get out of here. The rest of us will cover for you."
"Okay," said Relena.
Relena guided Trey away as both Joey and Kody stood behind Rico.
"Give me the bottle with Daiyoo inside!" ordered Joey of the Energy Tree.
Rico quickly took out the small bottle and threw to Joey's hands. Then Joey hurried out as well.
Kody of the Hard Rock stood with his partner as he held his glowing staff using both hands.
Armor Champions Season 4 -- Episode 201: Clashing Against the Darkness; Another Light of Good Disappears
First, Rico hurried to him and gave out a high punch to the possessed wizard using his Right Fist. Billy grabbed his opponent's right arm with his Left Hand. Billy soon spun around and struck with a Right Side Kick which pushed Rico away.
Second, the wicked wizard hurried and grabbed his opponent's shoulders with his hands. Billy lifted himself over the top of Rico's head. He soon spun around as he landed behind the champion. After he landed on the ground, Billy performed a backwards-roll which made Rico fall face down.
Next, Billy wrapped his wrists around Rico's neck in order to choke him. The other hero -- Kody of the Hard Rock -- placed the front tip of his glowing staff on the ground before him. He quickly performed a Cartwheel as he kept his weapon on the ground. And he tried to strike the head of the enemy using his feet. But Billy moved away in order to escape the assault.
After he landed, Kody blew a barrage of strikes using both ends of his staff as he spun clockwise repeatedly. This made Billy back a few steps away.
Rico quickly lowered onto one knee as he lowered his head. He soon closed his eyes as he placed his hands in a diamond pattern. While Kody continued to fend off the wicked Billy using his staff, a calm Rico thought to himself.
"This... This may be the big one. This is not like the other battles I've been in. We are against a powerful opponent after all."
A fearless Kody of the Hard Rock continued to back his enemy away using quick strikes with his weapon. And Rico continued.
"Kylie," He thought. "Forgive me for this. You've always said you wanted to be the first to go. And you made me promise that. But..."
Rico lifted up his head and looked straight at the two fighters as he gave a soft smile.
"You will probably hate me for this," He thought more. "But... I won't be able to keep that promise. Besides, you can't block Fate's design anyway."
Suddenly, green energy shined from both his hands as Rico gave out a loud shout.
"Anubis-sama!" He thought. "You have helped me through a lot, especially in my darkest times. I won't forget all you have taught me since our first meeting. You were always a great teacher. And... You were also a good friend."
The ground began to shake around them after the valiant Rico called out "Earth Release! Great World Eruption!"
Both Kody and the possessed Billy lowered to one knee.
"Was that you, Rico?" thought Kody.
"KODY!" yelled Rico. "MOVE! QUICK!"
A questioning Kody hurried into the air and Rico called out "Lightning Release! Bed of Lord Neptune Technique!"
Blue electricity soon formed on the ground of the entire area which held both ankles of the fearful Billy.
"What is this?" cried Kody. "Has Rico formed a plan of his own?"
Next, Rico stood up as he crossed his arms in front of him.
Billy tried to budge out as he cried "What is this power?"
Rico stared at him with determination and told Billy "This may not do it. But I will do what I can to keep you from hurting anyone, including those who I've come to know and care for!"
A circle of green water emerged around him from the ground as Rico gave a relieved smile.
"Rico!" cried Kody. "What are you going to do?"
And Kody thought to himself "If he uses Water Release along with Lightning, he will form a great explosion. That will annihilate both Billy and himself."
Then Kody yelled "Don't do this, Rico!"
Rico placed his palms forward. After that, the circle of water formed into a large globe of green energy before him.
Flying in the air away from the area were the three individuals -- Jede, Camerion, and Kylie.
Kylie felt a certain energy emerging nearby and she cried "No Rico! Don't!"
"What is it?" asked Jede.
"What's wrong?" questioned Camerion. "Is it Detective Nonaka?"
In the old warehouse, a vicious Billy watched as the determined Rico of the Lake Kaires gave another smile.
"Are you mad?" yelled Billy.
Finally, Rico blew out his deadly projectile as tears fell from his eyes.
"Water Release!" He called. "Final Stream!"
The lightning from the ground had collided with the projectile. And a large explosion was formed around the entire area.
The white light of the explosion flew toward the other champions who took Trey into a small green forest.
After he felt a great ki fade, Joey of the Energy Tree turned around and stared at the bright light in fear.
"No!" He yelled. "Not you too! RICO!"
Relena of the Cosmic Fire faced the great light as well and she shouted "No! Rico!"

So You've Got a Spirit Problem: An Adept's Guide to Taking Care of Business
Knowing how to do magic is not at all the same thing as knowing how to solve a problem.
Here is a map to one trail through this irritating, often murky, forest. The steps are generally presented in the order I'd recommend taking them, but naturally the details of execution are up to you.
This guide assumes that as someone who knows how to do magic, you may be called upon to assist others from time to time, so there is a distinction made between you as the practitioner, and the victim of a haunting.
Never rely on visualization-only techniques.
There is a difference between Energy Work and visualization. If someone has told you that all you need to do to protect yourself from spirits is to imagine that they cannot hurt you, they are wrong.
Yes, where your attention goes, energy flows - but as it turns out, real spirits are probably more powerful than the wispy energy patterns sprinkled about by you imagining stuff really hard.
I have met many a practitioner who was convinced they were up against an incredibly powerful spirit, because years of visualization did nothing. The first time they cast an actual spell with real power (that takes like 45 minutes of prep and 15 minutes of execution), the spirit was gone.
Fancy that.
Please place the mask over your own mouth and nose before assisting others.
Spirit hauntings often affect more than one person. Household members, social groups, entire Discord servers - it happens.
Attend to your own personal protections first. If this is your first rodeo, a few suggestions:
We may assume there is a timeline pressure; by the time you're called in to help, things may have become rough. There is no need to avoid taking care of the problem for months while you carefully craft a system of protections.
Obtain or recharge a single personal amulet of protection, especially one crafted against malefic spirits (as opposed to a general protection). Charge it and wear it for the duration of this process.
Obtain or recharge a single household ward for your own home, if you are not the one being haunted. If your home is already under spiritual attack, now may not be the right time to place wards. Read on for details.
Obtain or recharge a single ward for your sleeping space, a heavy-handed one that strongly protects your sleep, and strongly limits spirit movement into your room.
For the duration of solving this problem, engage in spiritual cleansing techniques more often. Also ensure you are getting enough calories and rest - depending on how resistant the problem is, your ongoing energy may be required for some time, and burnout helps no one.
Gather as many details as possible.
If you are assisting another person, get down (in writing) as many details as you can about when the haunting began, who it affects, the symptoms, any locations where the spirit is present, etc.
Consider that sometimes the spirit haunting is caused by a spirit which cannot be banished, like local nature spirits who are going to dwell there regardless of your actions. Whether you need to approach the situation as a warrior or a diplomat should be ideally figured out before you begin taking actions.
Make sure wards are not trapping the spirit inside.
If there is a potential that this is happening, open up or partially dismantle a ward (this can often done by opening a household door or window with Intent) so the spirit can leave.
Ask it to leave.
Not, "leave me/my friend alone." Not, "go away."
"Please leave this household permanently, and do not come back."
Combining this with a good-faith offering can help a lot. Place the offering outside, ideally beyond the property line, but we all do what we gotta do.
"Please leave this household permanently. I have placed an offering of [stuff] outside for you, because we are not enemies. This offering is yours if you accept these conditions: that you leave this property and do not come back. Please accept this offering, and leave."
Tell it to leave.
"You must leave this household, and all the people in it. This is not your home. Authority has been given to me to revoke any invitation which brought you here. Leave now of your own volition. If you do not leave, force and aggression will be used against you to force you to leave."
And if that doesn't solve it, time to get down and dirty.
Maybe you didn't even ask it to leave, because you arrived well after that was already attempted. If things have already escalated:
Prepare personal protections for everyone involved.
If you cannot reasonably do so, teach them how to shield through energy work. Remember that there are many inherently protective amulets found in nature which do not require much (or any) magic to be worked over them before they are effective; employ these to your advantage.
Optional: Figure out the spirit's weaknesses.
This step may be especially useful if banishments have already been attempted, and failed.
Gather a wide variety of magical symbols, amulets, talismans, and objects charged with various energies.
Find the spirit or connect to its energy (ideally behind a mirror, or through a protected scrying device, or using some other technique so it can't see you).
Hold up each symbol, object, etc., up to the spirit in turn. See how the spirit is affected. Take notes (ideally, have an assistant who can take notes as you describe what you're seeing).
Suppose the spirit seems totally unaffected by watery energies or solar symbols, but seems very affected by fiery energies and iron - now you have helpful answers.
Combine your discoveries with information about any previous banishments that may have been attempted to aid you in choosing your next course of action.
Less optional, but still optional: Perform divination
1. DO NOT CONVERSE WITH THE GODDAMN SPIRIT.
2. You do not need to know everything about the spirit before you get rid of it.
It drives me fucking CRAZY when people refuse to banish or get rid of obviously harmful spirits because they want to know its backstory, its personality traits, its gemsona, its full natal chart, and its favorite comfort foods first.
"We can't banish it until we know why it's doing this!"
The fuck you can't.
If your attitude is literally that it's okay for beings to hurt you as long as they have a good reason for it... Or you're not going to set boundaries unless you know why someone has crossed you...
I don't know what to tell you.
And hey, by the way, if it's an obviously bad spirit that you've already acknowledged is harming you, IT'S GOING TO LIE TO YOU AND MANIPULATE YOU.
There's a hell of a lot of people out there who have fully acknowledged the absolute hell a spirit has caused them, but they want to talk to it because idk, why wouldn't you want to talk to your own personal torturer, and thirty minutes later they're accepting the spirit as their new guardian and building it an altar.
So.
Divination is useful to help determine the outcome of your banishing actions and to give you insight into how to perform your operations effectively. This is a really good idea if you don't have a million years to randomly try stuff until something sticks.
It is not to become penpals with a harmful spirit who has already shown you its intent towards you.
Telling a spirit something, or sending messages, is extremely different from two-way communication. Don't open yourself up to a force that is causing active harm.
So now you've got to banish.
Your banishment will be greatly increased in efficacy if you surround it with supportive actions. The ability to employ any of these techniques of course varies depending on situation. Employ as many of them as possible.
Petition benevolent spirits, ancestors, and divinity to assist and support your workings.
Include as many people as affected by the haunting as you can.
Flood the house with supportive and helpful energies.
A floor wash or steam pot will be very helpful. Smoking out an entire house is difficult to get away with these days, but a fine option. If you can't get to the whole house, especially try to work on the areas where the spirit is known to be present.
Protective symbols hung about, including saint candles, also tends to assist in shaking the spirit "loose" from its moorings.
Loud and cheerful music, fresh air, and a generally upbeat mood helps the proceedings a great deal.
If it is determined that the spirit is attached to a single person, focus applying smoke, blessed waters, and talismans to their person.
Trap the spirit inside of something.
When you banish a spirit, where does it go? Just outside the property line? All the way across town? To the ends of the earth? How long until it finds its way back?
A cobalt-blue bottle filled with sand is a handy spirit trap. The spirit will eventually be freed again, before this world is over - and likely, quite a bit before that. Research why and how spirit traps work, and what techniques may be used to occupy the spirit for a great length of time before it can escape.
Perform your banishment.
As this post is for those who already know how to do magic, I leave the details up to you. Reflect on what you've learned about the spirit up until that time, and utilize powers which seem best suited to cross it.
Relying upon your personal power alone is not advised. Draw from sources greater than yourself. Asking divinity and benevolent spirits to arrive and support the working while you undertake it is a fine idea.
Once the spirit is gone, or trapped, dispose of various implements and clean up as you normally do.
Cleanse the home or person if you haven't.
Any technique will do.
Set up home wards if they did not already exist.
This includes helping others understand how to maintain protections in their own home.
Listen to yourself, or the person you are helping.
Mighty sorcerer though you are, it is possible that the spirit was not actually removed when you performed your banishment. Do not discard gut feelings or intuitions that the situation is not fully at rest.
You may need help, or new techniques, or simply ongoing effort applied to the situation before it is completely resolved. Every now and then, rare as it may be, the solution is really just to apply protection and go about your business.
Taper off healing, cleansing, and spiritual hygiene back to your normal levels.
Even if a spirit has been correctly removed, a person or place may have sustained actual spiritual damage. Instead of immediately dropping extra spiritual self-care when the spirit is gone, try maintaining it for a little while (especially if your normal level is zero). Staying clean and hygienic will help spiritual injuries heal on their own. Mundane actions, such as continuing to get enough food and rest (where possible), will also help.
If you are helping another, give them steps for things like cleansing baths how how to clean their own aura.

I received this ask and it got me thinking about an aspect of witchcraft that I worry is maybe lacking in the community here.
Please, put down the pitchforks and bear with me. Because it’s 100% not a criticism, only an observation from a witch with a decade and a half of experience under her hat.
I love seeing some of the creativity that goes into spell jars, and the sigil posts, and all sorts of things that are on the outer edge of my personal practice of the craft. However, if you’ve seen my posts or followed me for a while, I’m betting you can guess what it is that I’m going to say.
Most of the recipes are missing the whys.
The witch in the above ask (who gave me permission for this post) needed basil for a spell jar. The problem is, basil has a lot of qualities. (and this is setting aside the entire discussion of personal associations with herbs). Without knowing which particular aspect of the herb was needed, it’s impossible to make a suggestion.
One of basil’s uses can be for money or prosperity. Another is purification. And yet another attracts friends. But, not all herbs that attract friends have the same purification aspect. So there isn’t a one to one swap.
It’s like cooking (I’m a hearth witch, if I can’t think of a cooking/baking example for something assume I died). Sometimes you can substitute honey for sugar and no other adjustments are needed. The sugar’s function in the recipe is for sweetness, and so honey (or any other sweet food like dates or agave) can be used in its place to give the desired taste. But, if I’m baking a cake or cookies, I can’t just replace all the sugar with honey and call it a day. The honey has different properties than the sugar, and so tweaks are needed!
Same goes for spells. Honestly, I’m of the mindset that spell-making and magic is just cooking with energy, but I’m a hearth witch, that is literally what I do.
So, it turns out, azalea-garden was making a spell jar to help attract a familiar. Logic says, that it’s the attracting friends aspect of basil that is needed, so I was able to make a few suggestions for herbs that I find have friendly attractive energies to them. Or would at least function in the spell for the desired result.
All that to say these two things:
First off, personal study.
It is not enough to just have a list of spells and glamours you print off the internet or got from a book. I’m sorry, but it’s not. Sure, things might work… okay. After all, assuming the person who wrote it had an idea what they were doing then things have at least a chance of coming together the way it says.
Second, share wisely.
When you are posting a spell, or recipe for something. Consider what it is that you are sharing, and give an idea of how and why it works, instead of just throwing ingredients at the screen.
I love when I see guides that will list the ingredient, and then the purpose.
Should I decide to use the guide this gives me far more confidence in what is going on then doing the magical equivalent of chucking the contents at my pantry at the stove and hoping I wind up with dinner.
Knowing the reasoning behind why the person chose what they did for the spell gives you the chance to check it against your own knowledge. Sometimes it’ll be a new aspect, and you can decide for yourself if you think perhaps they are onto something. After all, we all have our own paths and sometimes people might have an experience that I didn’t have. But on reflection I can see how they arrived to that conclusion. So now I learned something too!
It also, in the example that started this whole long post, gives you the ability to make changes based on your availability of ingredients. So, basil is the attractive portion of the spell, but if you’re out of basil, then something like Citronella, or Lemon Beebrush which have similar friend-attracting aspects can be swapped in.
Stuck In the 101
Really, and please do keep the pitchforks away because I say this with all the love in the world towards baby witches and those learning the craft, until you start doing the above two things… you’re always going to be in witchcraft 101.
It is not enough to have a rote understanding of magic, energy work, herbs, or spells. You have to understand it. And it don’t mean that you need to fully grasp how magic works. No one does (really, we don’t).
Witchcraft isn’t something you do. It’s not lists of memorized ingredients and correspondences. It’s a practice, it’s a lifestyle, and it’s something you ARE.

developing your craft (beyond tumblr)
Witchblr can be wonderfully supportive and rich with information for a new witch. Spells! Masterposts! Correspondences! Oh my!
But at some point, it feels like you keep seeing the same posts, the same lists, over and over, and your grimoire is full of conflicting correspondences pulled from 15 different resources, and you feel like you should be further along than you are, and there is a subtle guilt over the witchy practices you continue to fail to adopt, and your craft is beginning to feel a little....stagnant.
Where are you supposed to go from there?
I think it is important to understand that while the witchblr community is a wonderful melting pot of ideas and practices, and can be a wonderful place to start, it shouldn’t be your primary resource.
So, without further ado:
1. Beliefs
What are your beliefs? Take the time to think about it. What is important to you? What is it that you want out of your craft?
What are your thoughts on hot topics such as cursing, consent, cultural appropriation, and if applicable, the law of three? What practices or subjects are essential to you? What does your practice look like in terms of spellwork, rituals, devotion, meditation, and practices? Are tools essential? What type of witch do you consider yourself, and is the label necessary or important to you? Perhaps it is important that you don’t align yourself any which way at all.
This is the time to figure out what your craft means to you, and what you value. A little self-reflection never hurt anybody (I don’t think?).
2. Data
I assume at this point you’ve gathered enough information to make yourself dizzy. Go through it.
Pitch out anything unreliable. Mark anything that requires further investigation. Put aside or throw out information on subjects you are no longer interested in or are no longer applicable to your practice. If you don’t give a damn about Astrology, you don’t need to keep collecting the information because of the idea that this will make you a more well-rounded witch.
From what is remaining, sort all the conflicting information and decide which sources to rely on, which ones to mix and match, and which ones to scrap all together. Note the subjects in which you wish to explore more and deepen your knowledge of, and which things you consider essential knowledge.
At this point I also imagine you have plenty of your own input to add as well, so go ahead and do that.
3. Correspondences
Correspondence lists are all over the place.
But correspondences are a very deeply personal thing that vary drastically between communities and from person to person. New witches tend to take these lists way more seriously than they should. I don’t have a lot of faith in a spell that requires a heavy amount of cross referencing correspondences that don’t align with your own intuition.
For instance, if you look up correspondences for money, you might find clovers, basil, and hyssop. But if you don’t know what hyssop is, then don’t use it just because a list or spell made it sound like you have to have that hyssop or the spell won’t work. If you don’t associate hyssop with anything, its not going to carry any correspondence in whatever you use it for.
Develop your own correspondences based on your own associations and intuition and suddenly the possibilities for spells and ingredients are endless. Use lists for quick reference, but don’t work from them religiously. When you come across a list that has a paragraphs worth of meanings, pick and choose which ones make sense to you and ignore the rest.
4. Resources
You never have to be done with exploring new methods and subjects, unless you want to. Delve into things for as long or intensely or as sporadically as you want to. But for the love of all that is good, expand your search outside tumblr.
And when you do, I’m here to let you know, it’s going to be a bitch finding information you can trust. Learn to sniff out bias and avoid it like the plague.
Refine your Google searches. Read a book. Investigate. Basically become a scholar. When you have a massive collection of quality resources mixed with your personal accounts and intuition, forming your own opinions is a lot easier.
It’s a pain in the ass, but unfortunately that’s how the world works. There aren’t many authorities on witchcraft. You have to become one. At least as far as your interests go anyway.
5. Practice
Refine your knowledge, refine your skills, practice how and what you want to practice. Tumblr can’t tell you how to be a witch. That is something you need to figure out on your own.
Ultimately nothing on this list is particularly earth-shattering to hear, I realize, but these are all things I wish I’d been told a little sooner. Ultimately if you want to grow, don’t rely on the community as your only source of information.
Whether that means diving into other platforms or going solo, you need to find that out for yourself.
