Witchy Review: Witchcraft 101: Pocket Book of Basic Spell Correspondences
I bought this zine from my pal @thevirginwitch
Tumblr media
This won't be a long review because it's a zine and it's a short read but it's so cute!
First and foremost the design: the design is reminiscent of those cutesy journals that some people are blessed to have the patience to make and I love the aesthetic of it.
I also appreciate that on the back, very obviously, Virgo states that these correspondences are their personal correspondences (I'm paraphrasing!). This is great because all too often I see correspondence posts, pages, and books that decide to forego this bit of info and that can get really confusing for new witches who don't know what to take as fact and what to take as personal experience/opinion.
They also have a "how to use this zine" section which encourages the reader to continue their research past the info on the zine. Love the encouragement to pursue education <3 Included in the zine are correspondences relating to:
days of the week
colors
crystals
elements
herbs
Price: They're selling it for a great price, only $6.99 USD on their etsy and they added stickers and a handwritten note to the order, (and even though we're friends, they had no clue it was me who ordered it!). Plus it arrived in a timely manner and in perfect condition!
Would I recommend this? Absolutely! If you're new to witchcraft and you want to 1) get a feel for others' correspondences and practices and 2) help support a wonderful creator then I think you'll enjoy Virgo's zine! <:
Here's a fun photo I took of the zine but the lighting kinda messes with the colors so I put Virgo's photo first lol:

wild rosemary [bahulʹnyk]
⠀⠀⠀//: wild rosemary is a poisonous plant of the Far East and some regions of Siberia. its leaves and branches (and especially flowers, pollen and seeds) emit a sharp, specific intoxicating smell. in the old days, rural tavern-keepers often insisted wild rosemary in moonshine in order to stupefy the client and extract more money from him.
⠀⠀Somewhere it was believed that with its help you can send madness, cause an evil spirit, somewhere it was considered one of the most effective love potions. in Carpathian legends, it is depicted as a strong love spell. in the Far East there is an ancient belief, remotely similar to the legend of the fern, that the wild rosemary is a magical bush that can talk, knows all the secrets, including where the treasures are buried.
⠀⠀⠀In the symbolic language of plants, rosemary flowers symbolize courage and disregard for death. for centuries it was believed that rosemary strengthens memory and clarity of mind, improves mood, protects against evil influences from outside and evil thoughts inside.
⠀⠀⠀Blooming, it paints all the hills in a bright, unnatural color - as if the dawn had spread over the mountains and glades.

40 & 83 for the ask game!
(my witch sideblog: @thevirginwitch)
Hey there!
Witchcraft Asks
40. What is the first spell you ever preformed? Successful or not.
I cursed a bully of mine in 6th grade (so I was 11 years old) and he ended up with a broken leg because of an accident. He was a football player, which is how his leg got broken (some...how...). You draw your own conclusions.
83. Do you have a pre-ritual ritual? (I.e. Something you do before rituals to prepare yourself for them). If so what is it?
I don't. I tend to just do things randomly. Sometimes I'll vibe check my room with some cleansing air spray before casting a spell, though.
Thanks for sending these in!

2 and 31 for the ask game! :)
(my witch sideblog: @thevirginwitch)
Hello, friend!
Witchcraft Asks:
2. Do you consider yourself Wiccan, Pagan, witch, or other?
I consider myself to be a Hellenic Polytheist/Pagan as well as a Spoonie Witch.
31. What is something you wish someone had told you when you first started?
That, outside of all the obvious appropriation, your craft is yours to create and mold for yourself. You can be eclectic, solitary, coven-based, or without any specific label. You do not have to follow "rules" that others have set (excluding appropriation because those are rules to be followed and respected). And that correspondences are subjective.
Thanks so much for sending these in!
~Crimson

Hello friend! I am currently doing research on modern paganism, and have found a few notes in some of the book I'm reading about how many practitioners of the Craft between the 70s and 90s believed they were following an "old", traditional religion of Great Britain and Northern Europe that predates Christianity. Have you read up on this at all? I swear I've seen the term "old and true religion" float around on this hellsite before, from people who consider themselves pagan, but I cannot find any additional sources for the life of me. If you have any further resources on this "old religion", or if you have your own thoughts on the matter, I would love to hear them! -@thevirginwitch
Ya, no problem!
So basically, the witchcraft movement of the 20th century was heavily inspired by Margaret Murray's witch cult hypothesis, which basically postulated that the witch hunts of the early modern era were targeting a surviving form of pre-Christian religion. The whole thing has been discredited, and we now understand that early modern beliefs about witches were essentially a bunch of conspiracy theories.
Justin Sledge on ESOTERICA has some good videos about the witch hunts and the actual reasons for them, so I'd recommend giving those a look!

are you named after someone? I don't think so. My real name is the same as my dad's middle name, but I'm pretty sure that is a happy accident
what sports have you played? 3 years of little league, 3 years of soccer. Mom was adamant that all of us play team sports growing up. I was the only one of my siblings who did not continue past the required time
do you use sarcasm? all. the. time. I was such a sarcastic ass growing up. Now, I know how to layer it with charm so people don't want to punch me as often
what is the first thing you notice about people? like randos walking down the street? cute butts
what’s your eyes color? Hazel
scary movies or happy endings ? scary, scary and more scary. I used to watch terrible Netflix horror movies to fall asleep. Very few scary movies actually scare me, but I do have a weakness when it comes to zombies. Something about them haunts my dreams.
any talent? I play piano, cook very well and can grow almost anything. I am also really good at doing math in my head. At my last job, I was the human calculator and spell check.
what are your hobbies? I play piano, cook very well and can grow almost anything. idk my hobbies are my talents
do you have any pets? Many! 2 dogs, 2 cats, a ball python and as of last week, 6 chickens
how tall are you? 5'7"? I think that's what it says on my license. Although I have been told I seem taller than I actually am.
dream job? I do not dream about labor. I dream about zombies.
Who should I inflict this upon? @nightshade-storms @jasper-the-menace @fernthewhimsical @thevirginwitch

Hey I am a baby witch and I was wondering where do I start my research it’s so much to take in and I’m honestly confused where to begin.
Different witches would probably have better answers but my recommendation is looking into meditations to practice grounding and centering yourself and your energy. Look into protection basics. I have a post here for protection correspondences. Walk in nature and see what calls to you. Develop your intuition by listening to your instincts and acknowledging when your feelings were correct. Start Journaling. Its okay if you don't do it everyday and the set up is all your own. You can write, draw or doodle, any thoughts you have that you feel you should note to train yourself to be more aware. A dream journal can also be helpful as you can get important messages from your dreams. Once again the meanings could be very personal to you so follow your feelings and instincts when interpreting.
Seeing as you're also new to Tumblr allow me to also give you a few terms to look for.
General: witchblr, witches of Tumblr, witch community
Learning: bos, book of shadows, grimoire, corresponce/correspondences, witch correspondence
Witch types (genuinely its a way to just say a focus, you don't have to be any specific type): elemental witch, sea witch, water witch, green witch, hedge witch, fae witch, hearth witch, kitchen witch... (these are just a few that came to my mind, there's plenty more but as you explore you should see them in the hashtags)
Specificities: bipoc witches, adhd witch, black witch, afro witch, autistic witch, disabled witch
And lastly here are a few witchblrs I recommend giving a follow: @thevirginwitch @crazycatsiren @she-who-treads-on-water @sirenliz @breelandwalker
I realize I said a lot so I'm gonna list it a little easier for you
Learn grounding and centering techniques
Protect yourself
Look into developing your intuition
Get to know your area/nature
Journal/Dream journal
I also have a free digital library should you want to look into some books. I'm still organizing it to make things easier but it is quite a lot and I have labeled folders recently to make things a little easier so it's worth a look if you wanna try out a book before getting your own copy.

Witchy New Year Refresh
It’s the new year soon and I wanted to share what I plan to do to invite 2024 in with vim and vigor!
Tumblr media
I plan to do this over a few weeks as doing it all at once would be exhausting and just isn’t possible for me. Do what works for you and listen to your mind and body!
Clean and Cleanse
Not just spiritually, but I plan to physically clean my space. Any time I am inviting something new into my home—be it the new year, new energy, or a new way of thinking—I clean and cleanse my space.
I’m not one for spiritual sterility, though. I tend to deep clean or organize my spaces and then I will move on to spiritually cleaning my space! Here are some ways you can do this:
Smoke cleansing - a common one but it’s a good one! Not a great option if you have asthma or pets.
Open windows - It’s pretty cold where I am right now but I still like to open the windows for a little bit to let the air flow through the space and carry out any stagnant air and energy.
Sound cleansing - Not always the best option for folks who live with others or have thin walls but I like to blast music and fill my space with sound. When doing this I prefer to use a playlist that invokes the energy I want to bring with me into the new year!
Spray incense - If smoke isn’t possible for you try using a sprayable incense! Just be careful since this will still distribute a substance across your space and if you have children or pets it’s best to use non-toxic plants for this.
Simmer pot - I love to throw together a simmer pot for cleansing my space. I find it works best in the room you’re in which is likely the kitchen but if you have a wax warmer or mug warmer then you can make a mini simmer pot by placing a heat-safe container of water on it and putting in whatever herbs and oils you want!
Connect and Reconnect
I have ADHD and if something is out of sight, it’s out of mind. To this point, I tend to forget about my oracle/tarot decks, offering vessels, and spell vessels. Here’s a few ways I plan to try to connect and reconnect with the spirits and energy around me.
Clean and organize altars or offering spaces - Self-explanatory but this means dusting, wiping down, and moving things around. It could also mean adding new things and tossing old things that have served their purpose.
Set out new offerings - I plan to try and truly connect to my house spirit(s) this year so I want to find a space in the home where I feel like I can best feel its energy and I will leave an offering. This also means refreshing offerings for deities.
Check-in with spell vessels - I’m a very physical witch, I tend to prefer having a real-world anchor for my spells. This adds up, though, and I’m stuck with a bunch of jars, bowls, pouches, or whatever else. Check-in and see if they’re still active or if you still need to maintain the physical aspect of the spell. If not, dispose of them appropriately.
New Year’s meditation - Practicing mindfulness and doing a meditation session to help me connect with myself going into the new year.
Shadow work or self-care - Shadow work is a form of self-care to me, though some of it can be intense and that’s not how I want to start my new year. Instead, I’ll be doing either some very gentle shadow work or I will be otherwise practicing simply self-care.
Misc
Other things you can do for the new year that I don’t have a category for!
Make a hearty and satisfying breakfast on New Year's Day to welcome in the new year--or at least a satisfying cup of coffee!
Drink tea that invokes the energy you’d like to follow you into the new year.
Make a list of things you would like to learn or try in the new year as far as your practice goes.
Here are some posts to look through for the coming year!

[a candle]
when a candle flares up, does she know what awaits her? when wax is poured into a candle, is it afraid of disappearing? when bees bring wax to their hives - do they know what awaits it? do they weep, mourning in advance for their creation?
Is the smoke afraid before flying through the air and disappearing forever?

would you ever share photos of your grimoire? i saw your post about it having annotations/a bibliography and it sounds super interesting! - @thevirginwitch
My current massive grimoire is in a word document [with the very eventual goal of maybe getting it printed as a handbook I can reference on the go], so I can share screenshots of it no problem! My bibliography is cited in the harvard method [it's the one I'm most familiar with from my university days] - this is just a part of it since it's currently several pages long.
Tumblr media
I also have in-text citations for anything that isn't my own personal gnosis, so far this is mostly limited to my flora section [plants, shrubs, trees, etc]
Tumblr media
Most of the reason I like citing & having a bibliography is because then I can keep track of what I've read + what's come from where if it's not from my own experiences.
I also have citations + references for the handful of charms I've used directly from folkloric or historical sources, to distinguish them from my home-made charms :-)
If there's any other snippets you'd like to see, or questions, let me know!
