Calling Long-Distance: 10 Stellar Moments in 2022 for Space Communications and Navigation
Just like your phone needs Wi-Fi or data services to text or call – NASA spacecraft need communication services.
Giant antennas on Earth and a fleet of satellites in space enable missions to send data and images back to our home planet and keep us in touch with our astronauts in space. Using this data, scientists and engineers can make discoveries about Earth, the solar system, and beyond. The antennas and satellites make up our space communications networks: the Near Space Network and Deep Space Network.
Check out the top ten moments from our space comm community:
Tumblr media
1. Space communication networks helped the Artemis I mission on its historic journey to the Moon. From the launch pad to the Moon and back, the Near Space Network and Deep Space Network worked hand-in-hand to seamlessly support Artemis I. These networks let mission controllers send commands up to the spacecraft and receive important spacecraft health data, as well as incredible images of the Moon and Earth.

2. Spacecraft can range in size – from the size of a bus to the size of a cereal box. In May 2022, we launched a record-breaking communication system the size of a tissue box. TBIRD showcases the benefits of a laser communications system, which uses infrared light waves rather than radio waves to communicate more data at once. Just like we have upgraded from 3G to 4G to 5G on our phones, we are upgrading its space communications capabilities by implementing laser comms!
Tumblr media
3. The Deep Space Network added a new 34-meter (111-foot) antenna to continue supporting science and exploration missions investigating our solar system and beyond. Deep Space Station 53 went online in February 2022 at our Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex. It is the fourth of six antennas being added to expand the network’s capacity.
Tumblr media
4. You’ve probably seen in the news that there are a lot of companies working on space capabilities. The Near Space Network is embracing the aerospace community’s innovative work and seeking out multiple partnerships. In 2022, we met with over 300 companies in hopes of beginning new collaborative efforts and increasing savings.
Tumblr media
5. Similar to TBIRD, we're developing laser comms for the International Space Station. The terminal will show the benefits of laser comms while using a new networking technique called High Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking that routes data four times faster than current systems. This year, engineers tested and proved the capability in a lab.
Tumblr media
6. In 2021, we launched the James Webb Space Telescope, a state-of-the-art observatory to take pictures of our universe. This year, the Deep Space Network received the revolutionary first images of our solar system from Webb. The telescope communicates with the network’s massive antennas at three global complexes in Canberra, Australia; Madrid, Spain; and Goldstone, California.
Tumblr media
7. Just like we use data services on our phone to communicate, we'll do the same with future rovers and astronauts exploring the Moon. In 2022, the Lunar LTE Studies project, or LunarLiTES, team conducted two weeks of testing in the harsh depths of the Arizona desert, where groundbreaking 4G LTE communications data was captured in an environment similar to the lunar South Pole. We're using this information to determine the best way to use 4G and 5G networking on the Moon.
Tumblr media
8. A new Near Space Network antenna site was unveiled in Matjiesfontein, South Africa. NASA and the South African Space Agency celebrated a ground-breaking at the site of a new comms antenna that will support future Artemis Moon missions. Three ground stations located strategically across the globe will provide direct-to-Earth communication and navigation capabilities for lunar missions.
Tumblr media
9. Quantum science aims to better understand the world around us through the study of extremely small particles. April 14, 2022, marked the first official World Quantum Day celebration, and we participated alongside other federal agencies and the National Quantum Coordination Office. From atomic clocks to optimizing laser communications, quantum science promises to greatly improve our advances in science, exploration, and technology.
Tumblr media
10. We intentionally crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid to test technology that could one day be used to defend Earth from asteroids. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, mission successfully collided with the asteroid Dimorphos at a rate of 4 miles per second (6.1 kilometers per second), with real-time video enabled by the Deep Space Network. Alongside communications and navigation support, the global network also supports planetary defense by tracking near-Earth objects.
We look forward to many more special moments connecting Earth to space in the coming year.
Make sure to follow us on Tumblr for your regular dose of space!

the tragedy of achilles
Achilles is caught in a vicious trap. He is part god: his godly parentage, Thetis, his immense power and skill, his petty and grudge-holding nature, his beauty, his parentage. and yet he is also a mortal for one reason: his ability to die. Not many people would call death and ‘ability’, and yet it appears the Greeks did. The most glorious thing to a Greek was called kleos, and this meant death. Not just any death, but a fiery, sacrificial, blaze of glory in a battle sort of death. So while being a god in nearly every sense, this ability to die places Achilles firmly within the mortal realm, within you and I exist. Dionysus is a god, yet he has one godly parent (Zeus) and one mortal parent (Semele) - look for examples of gods with mortal fathers but immortal mothers, or something or other, look to Aphrodite's children and so on - in some sense, this is a gift for Achilles, since he can achieve mortal kleos far more easily. but yet.
Imagine being in a primary school class of mythology or ancient Greece. You, of course, know all of the answers to the questions, yet if you answered them with the truth, you would not be marked correctly. If a primary school student explained the story of Aphrodite's birth, this would probably lead to disciplinary action! And this is the situation in which Achilles is in. It is the fact that he exists within the mortal realm at all that kills him. Gods can prefer mortals, take Athena and Odysseus, yet they do not love them in the same way mortals can love one another. One could even argue that gods cannot love one another in the same way that mortals can. Achilles exists within this mortal realm and is driven to death by his (godly) need to avenge the death of Patroclus who, whether interpreted as a brotherly friend or lover, was certainly beloved by Achilles. It is his death that drives Achilles to kill Hector, hence ending the Trojan War, and leading to his prophesied death.
It is easy for a modern audience to say that Achilles should have simply accepted that Agamemnon as his superior at least in the traditional hierarchical sense had taken his concubine, Briseis, and that he should have returned to the battle, even if after a little while, but certainly at least after the war turns. And he does not, and we still discuss if this is an overreaction. Odysseus, Ajax, and Phoenix approach and supplication him, offering him gifts and so on and so forth, which he still refuses. Yet I would argue that for Achilles to return to the battle would have been for him to sacrifice his pride, and hence his kleos. For a mortal, pride does not equate to kleos, but the gods, μεν δε, are characterised by their pride, they live on it, literally, because if it is not sufficiently fed they do not continue. This may seem fantastical but it is also a literal interpretation, look at Helios and Selene, gods of sun and moon later blended into Apollo and Artemis. look at any older god blended into another for simplicity, to reduce the cost of sacrifice and worship and so on. Ao Achilles cannot forgive Agamemnon. It is only when Patroclus goes into battle, wearing Achilles’ clothes I might add, in an attempt to don the physical and literal armour of a god, that Achilles is roused to fight. Patroclus, up until this point, has not been characterised as a great warrior. And yet this armour, this disguise almost, imbued with the divine power of Achilles, leads him into one of, if not the most incredible aristeia in the Iliad or even the Greek canon. Slaughter was a part of Greek life in battle, and yet it was not mindless, we can see this in Homer’s biographies of each felled soldier - and then he killed so and so, wife of so and so with four children, five goats, and a very good credit score. There is a remorse in his death. Only in an aristeia does one kill as a weapon themselves, rather than wielding it. Achilles has the powers of a god which he is not allowed to truly exercise, essentially, and I will elaborate better when I am less sleepy and more sober. The weight and gravity of his tragedy or role as a tragic figure, is deeply underestimated.

Brouter le cresson - Joey Bosa's Birthday
18+ content ahead
Joey was awakened by the sound of the bedroom door opening. His and Arty’s cat, Cassiopeia, meowed loudly as he heard Arty shush her gently.
“Hi, baby.” she cooed to their cat, causing a smile to begin spreading across Joey’s face. He peaked an eye open, seeing Arty in front of the bed, cradling Cassiopeia like a baby and pressing a soft kiss to the torty’s head.
His eyes trailed over Arty’s form, taking in the sweatshirt of his she was wearing as well as the jogging shorts she had on underneath. He knew she was taking an early flight back this morning to Florida after spending a few days back out in Los Angeles for work purposes.
She gently placed the cat down (who ran out of the room as soon as her feet touched the ground - heading for the kitchen most likely to eat) and looked up, making eye contact with him. A huge smile spread across her face as she crawled across the bed to him. He held his arm out for her, hugging her into his side as he yawned loudly.
She snuggled against him and laid contently in his arms. She mumbled something into his chest, causing Joey to squirm at the ticklish sensation.
“What?” He asked.
“I said..” She lifted her head, looking up at him with a pouty face and puppy eyes. “I might have done something stupid back in LA when I was with Chloe…” Her hand smoothed up his chest, playing with the chest hair growing there. She loved the off-season because that normally meant he grew his chest hair out. She didn’t know how to explain it, but she thought it added to his rugged charm and always caught her attention when he walked around shirtless.
Joey stared in confusion, his brain trying to scramble awake enough to process her words. “How bad are we talking here?”
“Not bad bad. More like stupid bad.” She paused, thinking of how to come out and say it. “Like I got drunk at our house and got dared to do something bad..”
“Artemis…” He said, suddenly getting nervous. “You didn’t.. Do something with someone, did you?”
“No! Oh my god - no!” She sat up waving her hands at him. “No - I.. I… let me just show you.” she held her head in defeat.
Joey sat up and looked at her now with worry.
Artemis got off the bed and gingerly pulled her shorts off. Then, she peeled her underwear down next, cupping her hand immediately over her nether regions.
“I.. got a tattoo.” She admitted with an uncharacteristic blush of embarrassment taking over her face. She hadn’t yet moved her hands to show him.
Joey could see the outline of the bandage and was intrigued to see what it really was. “Did you.. Did you tattoo your pelvic region?” He asked incredulously as he walked over to her and sat on the edge of the bed. He pulled her over to him and slowly pulled her hands away.
Tattooed on her pelvic region, to the left slightly was his initials in cursive ‘JAB’ with a small bear paw print to the side of it.
Joey stared at it in surprise.
“Surprise..?” Arty said, her hands covering her cheeks as she watched his expression for dislike of the tribute. “It was supposed to be a birthday surprise for you - well drunk me thought that it would be good.. I didn’t realize I actually got it done until Chloe and Marley showed me the video of me getting it done.”
Joey’s thumb gently massaged the skin around the tattoo, careful as he heard her hiss slightly at how tender the skin was.
He leaned in and gently pecked the tattoo, leaning back to look her in the eyes.
He stood up slowly, towering over her before pressing a heated kiss to her lips, carefully lifting her onto the bed and laying her flat on her back as he crawled over top of her.
“Fuck..” He mumbled as he helped peel her tank top off. His tongue made a trail down the valley of her breasts, dancing down her abdomen and over the belly button piercing she had in. When he finally reached her lower lips, he spread them with his fingers and started to lap at her juices.
She cried out as he pinched her clit gently between his fingers with one hand, the other thrusting two fingers into her hole, pistoning with a rough pace.
“Fuck!” She arched her back off the bed, her eyes rolling back as she was overcome with so many sensations.
Joey didn’t stop his ministrations, instead removing his fingers from near her clit and replacing them with his lips as he sucked on it, his hand making its way up to her left breast as he fondled it.
Arty had one hand cover the one on her breast, her hand holding it there as the other found its way into Joey’s hair. He was still sporting short locks, but he had just enough at the top for her to grip on.
It felt like an eternity had passed before he finally stopped.
Arty was crying in desperation, “Please, please don’t stop. I’m almost there!”
Joey wiped his beard and licked his lips as he quickly moved her into position. He sat up on his hind legs, pulling Arty’s legs up to rest on his thighs, her upper back still against the mattress.
He made eye contact with her as he lined himself up and pushed in her.
Arty laid there, a panting mess as she stared up at her fiance. Her brain could think of nothing more as she felt his cock push into her velvety heat, each thrusting sending a warm shock through her core and causing her to pant heavily from the overwhelming sensation.
Joey had an impressive girth and length, with a beautiful upward curve to it. Each time they fucked, it was an experience given his size. The curve of his cock definitely helped hit her g-spot each time they fucked.
She knew she was addicted, and based on his constant need to reciprocate to her, he was too.
“You’re mine.” He growled suddenly, his eyes dark as he stared down at her. “Fucking tell me that you’re mine.”
“I am.” She moaned. “I am yours. Only yours. All for you baby.”
“All for me?” He taunted.
“Mhm.” She nodded her head as she tried to keep eye contact with how rough his thrusting was. “All for you. Only you. I’m all yours.”
“This is my pussy?” He gently touched her tattoo just above it.
“Yeah, baby. It’s yours. All yours.” She hiccuped, tears now pricking her eyes as she felt that tell-tale sign of a coil-like snapping inside her. Her orgasm was building as she felt her back suddenly arch upwards.
Joey held her still as he continued to rail her a few more times, his own groans filling the air as he spilled his load into her, pushing deeply with each thrust.
They both were gently gyrating their hips in sync with one another, buzzing off their post-coital bliss.
Joey finally pulled himself out, groaning at the sensation against his sensitive cock. He sat back again and watched his cum leak out of Arty.
He reached out, scooping it up and bringing it to her lips.
She opened obediently and hummed loudly in delight at the salty taste as she sucked it off his fingers.
“Fuck..” Joey muttered as he felt his cock twitch again with need. He knew it would be a little bit before they did round two, but it didn’t mean he couldn’t appreciate the sight.
She released his fingers, smiling at him with flushed cheeks. “Happy Birthday, baby.”
He smiled, leaning in to kiss her before moving to lay down next to her, pulling her to him. “Thanks.. I hope you didn’t make any plans because we aren’t leaving this house today.”
“Oh?” She asked, looking at him with a teasing smile. “I have dinner reservations for us tonight.”
“Then we’ll order in and I’ll eat you out for dessert.” He said bluntly, causing her to laugh at him. “I’m supposed to be on an off-season diet anyways.”
“Yeah? I don’t remember the nutritionist saying cunningulus should be on the menu?”
“What is it that you said the French call it? Brouter le cresson?”
She started laughing loudly at that, actual tears forming in her eyes. “You remember me saying that? Oh my God!”
“You’re the one with a dirty mind in like four languages, Arty. I was a perfect gentleman before I met you.” Joey jokingly protested.
“Yep, that’s absolutely true. Such a perfect gentleman that you admitted after we started hooking up that you jacked off to my bikini pics on Instagram after the second time we fought on COD.” She teased.
Joey’s face blushed bright red at the memory. “I was sexually frustrated and you pissed me off. I couldn’t help it..”
“Hey - listen. If I was a guy, I’d jack off to me too.” She jokingly said. “Glad it was you and not one of your creepy buddies that were DMing me.”
Joey looked at her in surprise. “Who was that? DMing you?”
“Well there was Schwartz after the first time we played against one another and then him and Marcus. I shut them both down.” She said nonchalantly. “I wanted to fuck you the first time I saw what you looked like. They didn’t interest me.”
Joey nodded, taking in this information and trying to withhold the urge to kill both of his online friends. He suddenly processed what she said. “Wait - you wanted to fuck me?”
Arty sat up, swinging her legs over the mattress and looked back at him in confusion. “Uh, yeah. You think I didn’t want to ride you to town after the first time we played against each other? As soon as I found out what you looked like I knew I was going to fuck you. Had a gut feeling.”
Joey just blinked in surprise at how sure she sounded. There were no traces of joking on her face. “So you manifested this?”
“Yep.” She said bluntly. “Now, birthday boy.. Are you going to come shower with me so we can go downstairs to open the other present I brought back for you - while I also give you head in the shower - or are you going to sit there and look at me the rest of the day?”
Joey shook his head, getting up as well to follow her into the restroom. “This is the best birthday I’ve had in a while.” He said aloud to himself.
“Yeah?” Arty threw a smile at him over her shoulder. “Well the day has just started.. We aren’t done yet!”
Joey couldn’t wait to see how the day would unfold with her.
“Are you actually going to suck my dick in the shower?”
“Is the Pope Catholic? Yes, Joey.”

Hey,
I don't know if you know a lot about cars or not but I've compiled a list of cars of what the senshi would drive and you can tell me what you think.
(If you can look it up if you want)
(This is also going to be a long one lol)
Usagi- Newer Volkswagen Beetle because she thinks it's cute
Ami- Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. She prefers something reliable and economical.
Makoto- Toyota FJ Cruiser or New Ford Bronco because I see her as an off road driver who enjoys exploring.
Rei- Probably something that runs and drives but I would lean her towards something that is cheap and practical while still enjoying it. Probably a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo or a Subaru Impreza WRX Hatchback.
Minako- Something cool like a BMW M5 F10 (Rip water pump lol) or 2012 Mercedes SL-Class (Rip engine due to trashing the shit out of that car lol)
Michiru- Something fancy yet practical such as a Mercedes E-Class Wagon Diesel or Volkswagen Passat 4Motion.
Haruka- Sport cars obviously lol. I would think a BMW M3 E46 Convertable for daily driver and Volkswagen Golf R to take Hotaru to school while still looking cool lol
Hotaru- Haruka's Golf but Michiru would get her a Toyota Yaris to start but if she doesn't want it, then she's going to get her own car lol.
Setsuna- Anything that runs and drives lol
I love this question! 🌞🚙 (Though I warn I'm not a knowledgeable car person and most of this is based on aesthetics. Also, I'm adding to, not disagreeing with your choices. I like the Yaris!)
Usagi - I agree on the newer Beetle Bug. She needs an automatic, it would be pale yellow with cute glitter decals on the windows and a pink license plate frame. I'd even say she has a pink fuzzy steering wheel cover and some kind of cute pink seat covers. There would be a little crystal hanging from the rearview mirror.
Rei - I feel like I'm being mean to her, but Rei has a faded 1977 Red Gremlin hatchback with the white stripes. It runs (and not much else). And she can shove a dozen people into the hatchback if she really tries. She's no frills with this and also refusing to take anything from her father even though he could have/maybe offered her a nicer vehicle.
Ami - this one was harder. I actually see her on a scooter with a cute little basket on the front. Pale blue with white details and a matching helmet. But, if she were to get a car, it would be a Smart Car. Same pale blue with white details and a little black cat decal on the back window. She's getting her transportation to take her from point A to point B without really thinking of passengers. If it's more than just her going anywhere, the other person is driving. Or alternately, a dark blue Prius.
Makoto - my girl has a small, budget-friendly pick-up truck. Specifically, a Chevy LUV (manufactured by Isuzu). Fading baby blue with a rust spot on the hood and a pink plastic flower hanging from the rearview mirror. She keeps an old wooden crate in the bed to throw stuff in and has a flowered license plate frame. Alternately, she gets a classic Bronco. There's still a wooden crate in the back.
Minako - my party girl gets a party vehicle. A bright sunny yellow VW Bus with polished chrome. It's a bitch to park in Tokyo but she loves it. It has a hippie stoner look but only because Minako loves the aesthetic of all the rainbows and colors and peace sign stickers. There's a blue bird figure glued to the dashboard and she pats its head every time she gets in. Fuzzy dice! Artemis has his very own customized cat seat slung over the front bench (it can be relocated if he wants to get in the back to get away from the commotion of the entire crew on a road trip). She has a custom license plate - SAYLAV
Haruka - like you said, definitely sport cars. And more than one because she married really well. 😁 I definitely see her going with mostly modern cars, like day one off the assembly line. There's a Porsche involved. But there has to be a classic 1965 Shelby Mustang in there somewhere. White with a dark blue racing stripe. She would not besmirch her car with decals. LOL
Michiru - she's going for classy and high end. I had to look some of these up because I'm not familiar with high end 😅, but I could see her in something like a Lexus LFA as her everyday driver. But I'm also giving her a high end modern Jeep for fun, like when they go on trips to the mountains. It is teal. Because she is girly.
Setsuna - she's going for basic use and reliability. Cadillac XTS in dark burgundy.
Hotaru - she'll inherit Michiru's Jeep and have it repainted purple. 😎

Thank you for tagging me @mariahwritesstuff! This is such a fun tag game. I've done similar of these years ago for the MCs of BCC but (from what I remember) most of my answers will be different as the characters have changed somewhat from that time.
I'll tag: @kainablue @dotr-rose-love @sam-glade @elshells @writer-artemis @writernopal @oh-no-another-idea
Faerathos - Owl
Tumblr media
Owls being symbols of scholarship and intelligence, fits Faerathos well, who is a scholar and very intelligent. Owls are also really good at what they do (hunting), and similarly he's good at very specific thing (not hunting or fighting in general), but kinda dumb outside it and lacks a lot of basic practical skills. He's a very high int low wis type of character.
Cassia - Snow leopard
Tumblr media
Other leopards and closely related big cats would fit Cassia too, but I choose snow leopard, since her companion and helper animal (for witch purposes) is a saber-tooth snow leopard (a thing their world has). She's a lone predator, who stalks her pray. She does acrobatics as an opera performer (their opera is a little different), and moves quietly with ease. She also can do the maiming beside the stalking too. She looks much softer and cuddlier than she is. But big cats are still just cats, which fits her too. She's very picky about the people she likes and how she receives affection, and if her boundaries is crossed she will (metaphorically) scratch and bite. She enjoys solitude and alone time, but when she's in the mood she likes company as well. One of the best ways to be with people in her opinion is to sit in same space in silence. She likes to sleep in small spaces.
Valeri - Dog
Tumblr media
Valeri is definitely a dog, specifically a big dog. He's very loyal, very helpful to the people he loves, smart in a practical way (and in other ways kinda dumb), bad at lying, good in teams, ferocious when needed and protective. Like dogs typically he wants to please others and likes physical affection from people he trusts. Though he's the kind of dog, whose been traumatized, so suspicious of strangers, kinda grumpy, gets stressed around too many people, bites (metaphorically in his case) when stressed and reacts badly when touched wrong or by wrong people.
Fiolev - Cat
Tumblr media
Cats are small predators, so they seek prey but they also have to avoid bigger predators, and that fits Fiolev perfectly. His prey is the money of gullible rich people, but also there's worse, more dangerous criminals and whole imperial army preying on him. So he has to look over his shoulder, move quietly and unnoticed. Cats teeth and claws are sharp and they can do surprising amount of damage, but they not really very dangerous. and he's the same (metaphorically). He's quick witted and quick in his movements. He can be so smart and so dumb at the same time. He's the type of cat who goes to check out new people, get their scratches and meows at them, but is not to be picked up by strangers, basically he's friendly but you have to win his trust to get his whole affection. He can also be purposefully annoying, when he demands attention. And like cats he's a little goofy guy, he's funny, and not as graceful as he'd like you to believe.

Every Zelda’s favorite video game:
Obviously not directly canon to Wisdomverse since the Zeldas don’t have access to video games, but I had fun thinking of what they’d play if they did :)
Sun — Stardew Valley
Dot — Baldur’s Gate 3, Overcooked 2 (Dot introduced it to the Colors and watched the chaos unfold before stepping in to expedite)
Lullaby — Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (she’s surprisingly good at it)
Tetra — Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag
Dawn — Princess Peach Showtime (she doesn’t usually play games, but this one is wholesome and she likes it)
Fable — Ace Attorney: Investigations 2 (her favorite character is Justine)
Dusk — Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (her favorite character is Sanaki)
Artemis — League of Legends (she plays ADC and sometimes loops Wars in as support)

“The clearest evidence about the Mycenaean pantheon lies in the Linear B texts. As discussed above, only a handful of the deity names in these texts appear both on the mainland and on Crete. We might consider those deities mentioned only on Crete as being Minoan. For those deities mentioned on the mainland, we have at least two possibilities. On the one hand, they may be Greek, meaning that they may derive from the Indo-European civilization that gave rise to the Greek language. Some divine names do have Indo-European etymologies and cognates. On the other hand, they may be pre-Greek, belonging to the indigenous population of Greece before the Greek-speakers arrived. These deities may then have been adopted into the Greek pantheon. Some gods do have a blatantly Indo-European heritage, such as Zeus and Poseidon. Others are more difficult to determine. The deities attested to among the Mycenaeans are Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, Dionê, Marineus, Hera, Artemis, Hermes, Dionysos, Posideia, Trisheros, Manasa, Pereswa, Dopota, Dipsioi, Drimios, Iphemedeia, the Mother of Animals, the Queens, the King, the Lady of Upojo, the Lady of Asiwia, the Lady of Iqeja, the Lady of Newopeo, and the Lady of Grain, as well as simply Lady (Potnia) (Hägg 1997, 165).
Much can be learned from these names not only about Mycenaean religion, but also about continuity of Greek religion into the historical periods. Many deities remained in power throughout Greek history, such as Hera and Hermes, showing that the Greek Dark Age was hardly the utter devastation and re-creation of Greece that scholars originally believed it was. Other names in the corpus either ceased to exist after the Bronze Age or morphed into nondivine titles, such as Dipsioi, “the Thirsty,” possibly referring to the dead. The most vexing of these is the name/title Potnia. By Homer’s day, the term meant “revered female,” referring either to a mortal or to a goddess. Sometimes the title was specific, as with the Potnia Therôn—Mistress of Animals—used in reference to Artemis. The question of who the Bronze Age Potnia was/were, however, is problematic.
The name/title Potnia appears twelve times at Pylos, five or six times at Knossos, three times at Mycenae, and once at Thebes (Boëlle 2001, 403). Thus, it is common to both Greece and Crete. In some instances, the word appears alone; in others, it is modified by a concept or place-name. At Knossos we have the a-ta-na-po-ti-ni-ja, which translates to something like Lady of Athens, and the da-pu-ri-to-jo-po-ti-ni-ja, or Lady of the Labyrinth. At Pylos we have a po-ti-ni-ja-a-si-wi-ja, Lady of Asia; po-ti-ni-ja-i-qe-ja, Lady of Horses; and at Mycenae there is the si-to-po-ti-ni-ja, or Grain Lady (Trümpy 2001, 411–413). The question is: Is Potnia one goddess or many? Is Potnia similar to the Christian “Our Lady,” in the way that Our Lady of Lourdes is also Our Lady of Fatima? Or is Potnia a title applicable to several separate goddesses at once? In both linguistics and occurrence, Potnia is related to the god Poseidon. The Pot- portion of her title may derive from the Indo-European word for possession or ownership, just as Poseidon means “Lord of the Land.” Her strongest cult is attested to at Pylos, where Poseidon was clearly the chief god, and she even has the title of i-qe-ja, relating her to horses, just like Poseidon. One could argue that Potnia was the consort of Poseidon. Furthermore, we know from later Greek mythology that Poseidon once mated with Demeter, both of them in the form of horses. If we add this to our study, and combine it with the fact that at Mycenae there was mentioned a Grain Lady (possibly an epithet for Demeter), we might say that Potnia was one universally acknowledged Aegean goddess, understood to be a grain/horse deity, consort of Poseidon, and later manifesting as Demeter. But then how do we understand titles like a-ta-na-po-ti-ni-ja, “Lady of Athens,” which is certainly a title of an Athena-like goddess? How could an apparently Indo-European word like Potnia be identified with a blatantly Minoan term like labyrinth? Why does the name/title Potnia appear more than once on some Linear B tablets? Should we understand that Potnia, as one goddess, received different dedications in her different guises, or that the different Potnias referred to distinct goddesses? In the end, it seems probable that Potnia was a title given to various goddesses in the Aegean pantheons. In some instances, such as at Pylos, one goddess was so prominent that she could be referred to merely by the title Lady. At other times, adjectives were used to differentiate among goddesses.”

Artemis stared her reflection down in the mirror. It was the eternal debate, whether or not to hide her one milky eye. To be sure- she'd long decided that being self conscious about it was wasted energy (and besides, it DID make her look tough, and in this line of work, that was a painful necessity) but important meetings with new people always made her second guess herself.
This was, of course, a very important meeting. She doubted her interviewee would judge her much on her appearance. He probably had more important things to worry about right now. Eh, screw it. She opted to just let herself be. That sense of openness was what she desperately needed to bring to the table after all. She buttoned her white work shirt and pulled her hair back into a tight bun- Ursula had insisted on some basic workplace safet protocols for this.
No hair worn down, no loose fitting clothing, no jewelry (save for a silver charm, which was actually considered PPE) closed toed shoes, and no ties. It occurred to her that meeting with a vampire was similar to operating a lathe. One wrong move and you could be mangled, skinned or worse.
Her face curled into a sarcastic smile at the thought. Ursula's paranoia was getting to her. She wasn't paranoid for completely incorrect reasons, though; and when the knock came at her office door she tried and failed to stop her heart from leaping into her throat like a frightened deer.
"Artemis?" Ursula stood at the door.
"The sedative has worn off. Your test subject is ready." There was a pregnant pause as Artemis turned from the mirror to face her aunt. As an employee, Ursula was, technically, below her. As family however?
"Is there something else?"
"Yes. It's ornery as all Hell." Ursula quipped.
Artemis shrugged. "Well, that is to be expected. Given. You know. The circumstances and all."
"I don't want you going in there."
Ah, this debate again. She knew it was coming, even though it had been settled and settled and settled again, long before the acquisition forms were  filled out.
"Auntie."
"Don't start, Artemis. I don't want you in there. We can do it another way. We can... I don't know. Face time him or whatever you do with a damn iPhone."
"You know he'd just break the phone and refuse to talk."
"Better the phone than your neck."
Artemis sighed. "Look." She began slowly. She'd rehearsed her spiel many times, and by now both women should have known it by heart.
"This project is based on the notion of cooperation and mutual respect. We cannot achieve true symbiosis when one half of the parties at play are treated like a pipe bomb about to go off."
"And I'm telling you, you can't just walk in there and expect to have a normal conversation with it. We can't expect it to instantly be on board. We don't even know how much it can talk. It's going to be in self-defense mode. It's going to want BLOOD, not an elevator pitch."
Artemis paused, staring her aunt down with a straight lipped expression. Ursula did, in fact, have a point. As much as she hated being lectured. But then a thought.
"...Then we give him blood."
"What?"
"Breaking bread is the best way to make friends, right? I want to take him something to eat."
"That would require the muzzle coming off. Hard no."
"Look, Mrs. Harker..." Artemis tried on her best 'manager' voice. It was good. She had been practicing in front of a mirror.
"...I want him unshackled, unmuzzled, and free to walk about the interview room. I want to bring him something to eat. At your request I will enter armed- or, you may enter with me. But this is my project." Her manager voice wavered slightly.
"I've done the reading, auntie. I know what I'm doing. Trust me on this one. Please."
Ursula heaved a heavy sigh of exasperation and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Fine. But since you INSIST on breaking every safety protocol we have, I INSIST on making some new ones to accommodate your requests."
Ursula pulled a pad of paper and pen from a nearby desk and began to furiously take notes.
"We will  have to modify the interview room for this. I want UV floodlights in the room- don't give me that look, they don't need to be on- but I want to be able to have my hand on the switch JUST in case. I need both of us to be armed, silver tip munitions, full clip. I also need a flare and a pepper spray bomb. And I want to be abundantly clear that if this goes south I will not be shooting to subdue, but to kill. It... He gets one chance."
"Loaded for bear?" Artemis asked with a cocky half smile. If a few more tools were all it took to placate Ursula, she'd sign off on any form auntie asked for. She took a step forward and pulled her aunt into a hug. "Thank you. None of this would work without you."
"Loaded for vampire." Ursula corrected. When she was pulled into a hug, she reciprocated strongly, squeezing her niece back almost painfully. "I know. Try not to mess up all my hard work."

Artemis Hexley and the Circle of Khanna
Tumblr media
Chapter 3: Times, They Are A-Changing
A/N: Sixth year is well under way, meaning more schoolwork, Hogsmeade trips, and Quidditch! Whilst Artemis catches up with some old friends, Skye is set on beating the new Gryffindor Quidditch Captain. Meanwhile, Charlie has his own problems… Members of the Hufflepuff Quidditch (Dream) Team belong to @lifeofkaze @thatravenpuffwitch and @that-scouse-wizard. Warnings: mild angst and the rewriting of an iconic HPHM scene, which I can only hope I’ve done justice.
Tumblr media
Artemis had thought that her O.W.L. year would be the hardest of her time at Hogwarts, but by the time she had gotten a month into first term, she had realised that was not the case in the slightest. Sixth year made fifth year look almost easy in comparison.
She may have halved the number of subjects she was studying, but somehow, Artemis’ workload had increased. It wasn’t just that she had additional assignments or that the new content of her lessons was harder; N.E.W.T. students were expected to perform all spells non-verbally, which meant that even the most basic of spells were now more difficult to perform. Luckily for Artemis, spellwork had always been something that had come easily to her, but even she was finding the transition taxing.
At least Artemis would have something to take her mind off her studies; her position as Seeker on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team was secure, as Skye Parkin, the new Captain, was keen to keep the team as similar as possible to the year before.
“For why would I want tae mess around wi’ a winning formula?” said Skye on the way down to the Quidditch pitch ready for the first practise of term. “We won the Cup last year, an’ we’ll win it this year an’ aw.”
The team was in good shape. They may have lost their previous captain and Chaser Orion Amari, who had been scouted by the Montrose Magpies, and Keeper Alex Gwithers, who was now working for the Ministry of Magic, but they had found decent replacements in the form of Chaser Cordelia Costa and Keeper Amelia Booth, and a new reserve player named Ellie Hopper. By their third practice of term, they had settled into their slightly altered dynamic. It looked like Skye might be right; perhaps they really would win the Cup for a second year running.
The chances of a second victory seemed much slimmer, however, when the somewhat impartial Quidditch commentator Murphy McNully joined them on the pitch at the start of October.
“Hooch has changed the match schedule,” he told them. “So you won’t be playing Slytherin next month after all.”
Artemis frowned. That meant that they would be up against either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, the two teams that had been their most challenging opponents the previous year. Erika Rath, the Ravenclaw Captain, was a ferocious Beater with an axe to grind following her team’s defeat the year before, and Artemis knew from experience that her friend Charlie, although only reluctantly a Captain himself, was both a remarkable Seeker and flying instructor. Neither team was ideal for them to be playing against for their first match of the season.
“Who are we up against then, Murphy?”
“Gryffindor.”
“Och,” Skye shrugged. “Nae bother. We smashed them last year.”
“Yes, but they were playing with a reserve Seeker,” said Murphy. “Your chances were always greatly increased. And I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about Weasley when it comes to his captaincy. There’s a decent probability that their strategy will be different to last year. They’re an unknown variable.”
“Aye, ye make a fair point there, McNully, I’ll give ye that. So, what we need is a way tae find out what their strategy is before the match so we can figure out a way tae beat them.”
“Yes, but as an impartial-”
“Haud yer wheesht, McNully, I was nae talking tae you,” Skye interrupted Murphy, her green eyes fixed on Artemis. “Hexley, hen, you’re pals with Weasley, aren’t ye?”
“No,” Artemis said quickly. “I mean, yeah, I am. But I’m not going to spy on him.”
“I was nae gaun tae say that ye should spy oan him.”
Artemis pursed her lips. She got the feeling that that was exactly what Skye was going to say.
“I was gaun tae say,” Skye continued, “that ye could ask him what he’s got planned. Nae harm in that.”
“I dunno. That still sounds like spying to me.”
“Well, ye have a wee think about it, hen. I’ll have a wee reccy in the meantime, see what I can find out.”
Behind her, Skye’s best friend and fellow Chaser Lizzie Jameson made eye contact with Artemis, an apprehensive look on her face. Artemis knew why. The last time Skye had tried to unearth information about a Quidditch rival, it had led to her spreading a series of rumours and inadvertently leaving Artemis to face the wrath of Rath. Somehow, she would have to find a way to placate Skye and keep Charlie out of trouble.
As for Charlie himself, he had enough on his plate already without being the target of Skye’s latest Quidditch scandal. In just one month, the Weasley twins had managed to cause more chaos than Tonks and Tulip had done in all their first five years at school, and every time they ended up in detention or a letter was sent home to their parents, Charlie looked more and more anxious.
“If you like, I could have a word with them for you,” Artemis suggested as the pair of them went to fetch food for the Grindylows - which, according to Professor Kettleburn, were behaving particularly aggressively for the time of year - they were studying in Care of Magical Creatures class.
With both Rowan and Ben Copper having given up the subject, Care of Magical Creatures had become Artemis and Charlie’s biweekly opportunity to spend time with each other. There were only four other students in the class: Merula Snyde, who was still acting even more strangely than usual; Ismelda Murk, Merula’s closest friend and erstwhile school bully; Barnaby Lee, Artemis’ ex-boyfriend, who still hadn’t spoken a word to her since their break up in June; and Barnaby’s best friend Liz Tuttle, whose silence towards Artemis might have been due to shyness, active dislike, or both. Charlie was therefore her natural ally in the lessons, and the fact that he was very skilled in subject meant that Artemis was finding the lessons much less difficult than she would have done had she been partnered with anyone else.
“I’ve tried having words with them,” Charlie muttered, summoning a wooden block for Artemis to stand on as she reached into the barrel of feed. “Several times, actually. It’s not doing any good at all. I don’t really know what else to do. If anything, I think I’m making it worse.”
“I doubt that.”
Artemis stepped down from her wooden block to free up the barrel for Charlie to fill up his feed buckets. He did so in silence, before shrugging at Artemis.
“Any word from your brother?” he asked her, and though Artemis could tell that he was partly asking to change the subject, she still shook her head in response.
“Nothing. And according to the Daily Prophet, they’ve still not found Rakepick, either,” she sighed. “You don’t fancy swapping brothers, do you?”
“Depends. Which one do you want?”
“Ideally Bill, but I’ll settle for Ron.”
That made Charlie laugh at least, though he still seemed tense. He always seemed tense these days. And he wasn’t the only one. So far, sixth year was taking its toll on all of Artemis’ friends.
Rowan was constantly studying,  staying in the library until closing time every single evening; Penny was still smothering Beatrice, and getting nothing but resentment in return; Tonks was for some reason still seething about not being allowed to take Potions as one of her N.E.W.T. Subjects; and Chiara’s stint of good health seemed to last all of two weeks. Artemis barely ever spoke to Ben Copper anymore; he had become intent on being fearless, which largely involved him glaring sullenly at everyone; and her other friends in Gryffindor and Ravenclaw - Jae, Tulip, Andre and Badeea - all seemed preoccupied whenever they were together.
It was a relief to everyone when the first Hogsmeade weekend of term was announced for the third weekend of October; some time away from the castle was just what everyone needed. Even Penny was considering leaving Beatrice alone for the day, thanks to a letter containing news that had made Artemis even more excited for the Hogsmeade weekend than she had been: Bill Weasley was coming to visit.
Artemis hadn’t seen Bill since she had left the Weasleys’ at the end of the summer, though the pair of them had written to each other a few times since then, sharing news from the castle and Gringotts Bank. Still, she couldn’t wait to see her friend, and hear all about the adventures he’d been having now that he was a real Curse-Breaker.
On the morning of the Hogsmeade trip, Artemis walked down to the village with Rowan, Penny, and Tonks. Chiara, having been unwell for the previous few days, didn’t join them, but their spirits were not too dampened. With the cool sunshine on their faces and crunching autumn leaves under their feet, the girls made their way through the winding streets of the village to the train station, where they had arranged to meet Bill.
The sound of a whistle and smell of smoke announced the train’s arrival, and through the small crowd of witches and wizards disembarking onto the the platform, Artemis spotted the unmistakable tall frame and red hair of her friend.
Bill Weasley’s face split into a wide smile as he saw the girls. He hugged each of them in turn, starting with Penny and ending with Tonks.
“Wotcher, Bill. I like your hair like that,” Tonks told him. Bill laughed, running his hand through his low ponytail, which had grown even longer since the summer.
“Are you taking the mickey?” he asked her.
“Not at all. Looks cracking. Anyway, I’ve got to go and meet Tulip. Great seeing you, Bill.”
“Well, that was brief,” Bill said, watching Tonks speed away. “What’s gotten into her?”
“Tulip’s going to help her pick out something to prank Professor Snape with as revenge for not letting her take his N.E.W.T. Level Potions course,” explained Rowan.
“I didn’t think Tonks cared that much about Potions.”
“No, but you know what Tonks is like,” Rowan gave Bill a dark look. “Tell her she’s not allowed to do something, and suddenly it’s all she wants to do.”
“Of course,” Bill nodded. “What about the rest of you? You all coping with the N.E.W.T. classes?”
There was a chorus of dubious noises, and Bill hummed sympathetically.
“It’s tough, sixth year. Once you all get the hang of the non-verbal magic it’ll be fine, though. Just you wait and see.”
Bill quickly caught them all up on the comings and goings of Gringotts, telling them about his lectures and his upcoming trip to Italy, where he would be spending six weeks investigating the ruins of an ancient wizarding town. Artemis listened, enraptured, as Bill explained about the relics that had been buried during an earthquake, and the enchantments protecting the site. It was exciting business, this international curse-breaking.
“Of course, I didn’t get a chance to speak to anyone after today’s news,” he said.
“What news?” Artemis asked, her nose wrinkling.
‘Haven’t you lot read today’s Daily Prophet? They caught her.”
“Who, Rakepick?“
Rowan practically ran over to a nearby bench, and picked up a discarded newspaper. She brought it back and read aloud:
“‘Dark Witch Patricia Rakepick was today apprehended by Aurors following a four month hunt. Rakepick, former Head Curse-Breaker for Gringotts Bank, was wanted in connection with an attack made on a group of students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry-’”
“Technically, we weren’t at school. The Vault was somewhere off-site.”
“I know, but shush. I’m still reading,” Rowan tutted, making Artemis grin. “‘…at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where she was working as a professor at the time. Rakepick is suspected to be in league with the mysterious criminal organisation, ‘R’. Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody and Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Aurors leading the investigation, declined to make a statement.’ Apparently, someone reported seeing her in going into an antiques shop in Knockturn Alley.”
“They were searching for her for four months, and she was only in Knockturn Alley?” Artemis shook her head. “No wonder this Mad-Eye person and Kingsley whatever-his-name-was didn’t want to make a statement. They can’t have been looking very hard.”
“She probably wasn’t in Knockturn Alley this whole time. I wonder what she was doing there, when the whole Auror office was looking out for her,” said Rowan, frowning deeply. “It’s not really a great time to go shopping, is it? When you’re wanted by the law.”
“Well, whatever the reason is, let’s just be glad that she’s been caught,” Penny said, smiling and nodding. “It’s one thing less for everyone to worry about, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. And if Rakepick’s been found, it means my brother won’t need to keep looking for her either.”
“Talking of brothers,” Bill frowned, “where’s mine? I would’ve thought that Charlie would have come down with you lot to meet me. I’m not going to see him until Christmas, else.”
“Charlie’s working at the Three Broomsticks. We could all go there and have some lunch, if you like.”
Artemis had expected Bill to be happy with this idea, and he did look tempted, but instead, he shook his head and somewhat awkwardly cleared his throat.
“Actually, Artemis, Penny and I were going to go for a walk,” he said. “But depending when we get back, I might meet you for a Butterbeer before I leave. If I’m not at the Three Broomsticks by the time Charlie finishes his shift, go back to the castle with him, yeah?”
“But-”
“If I don’t get to see you later, I’ll write to you tonight,” Bill told her. Artemis opened her mouth to argue, but there was a serious look in his eyes that stopped her from doing so. She shut her mouth, nodded her head, and ducked out of the way as Bill reached out to ruffle her hair. “I’ll get you next time, Little One. See you soon, Rowan.”
“Bye, Bill,” Rowan returned his greeting, and watched him walk away with Penny. She turned to Artemis, and smiled. “How peculiar.”
“What is? Bill not telling me if he’ll be back in time to have a drink with me?”
“I suppose that, too, but I was actually thinking about how it’s just the two of us. That hardly ever happens anymore.”
“I suppose not,” Artemis linked arms with Rowan. “You know, I really miss spending all my time with you.”
“Me too. We can’t be inseparable forever, though.”
“A shame, really,” said Artemis and she looked up and down the platform, the same platform that the two of them had stood on every year at the start and end of term. “Ro, do you remember the first time we got the train to Hogwarts?”
“Of course. I was so terrified about coming here, and worried that I wouldn’t make any friends, and-”
“Rubbish, we were already friends before then!”
“I know, but I thought that maybe you’d find other people who were cooler than me to be friends with,” Rowan laughed. “Remember, I think it was Penny who was having a party on the train, and I was far too shy to go to it. I thought you might want to go, but instead, you stayed with me.”
“Of course I did. I could never leave you all by yourself.”
“Still, thank you for staying with me.”
“Thank you for staying with me,” Artemis gave her best friend a sheepish smile. “I don’t think I’ve always given you the easiest time, what with all the curses and the poisonous spiders.”
“Venomous,” Rowan corrected her, smirking to herself. “No, it’s been an interesting five years. But at least it hasn’t been boring.”
“Anything but that.”
The two of them stood arm in arm on the platform, looking out a the view of Hogwarts castle towering on a cliff top over the Black Lake, the water and stone glowing in the high sun. The train had long gone and the crowds had cleared completely. It really was just the two of them, they way it hadn’t been since their first days at school, five years previously.
“Things are so different now, aren’t they?” Artemis said, her voice barely more than a whisper.
“Some things are. Not everything” Rowan turned and nodded her head at the clock on the wall behind them. “See, the clock hasn’t changed.”
Artemis followed Rowan’s line of sight, and saw that the clock read ten past ten, whereas her own watch made it almost noon.
“Has it been like that the whole time we’ve been here?”
She had been asking the question seriously, but Rowan laughed out loud.
“Artemis, the clock here has been stuck at ten past ten since the first time we came to Hogwarts,” she said. “Have you really never noticed that before?”
“Never. Someone really ought to fix it.”
“Probably, but I quite like it. There’s something reassuring about how constant it is. It’s nice that some things can just stay the same, almost like they’re frozen in time.”
“I guess so,” Artemis squeezed Rowan’s arm. “Well, seeing as it’s just the two of us today, what do you want to do? We could go for lunch, or to Tomes and Scrolls, or Maestro’s Music Shop, or-”
“I don’t mind. You can choose,” Rowan replied. “But can we just stay here for a little while first? I’d quite like to just stay frozen in time for a bit longer.”
“There’s nothing I’d rather do more.”
Eventually, Rowan and Artemis decided to stop being frozen in time. They had both gotten hungry, and Artemis had been looking forward to seeing Madam Rosmerta. They set off for the Three Broomsticks, where the clock read half past twelve. Rosmerta had clearly read the morning paper, because barely had she given Artemis a hug and a free pint of Butterbeer before she launched into a tirade against Patricia Rakepick.
“Yeah, but they’ve caught her now, Ros,” Artemis said, the moment she managed to get a word in edgeways.
“About time, too,” Rosmerta said, scrubbing the bar with a damp cloth. “Any longer and I’d have gone down to that Auror office and given Kingsley Shacklebolt a piece of my mind.”
Artemis raised her eyebrows. She had seen Rosmerta give someone a piece of her mind before. It really was just as well that the Aurors had found Rakepick when they did. Artemis framed her next question very carefully.
“Ros, I was just wondering, how much do you charge for one of your rooms?”
“Depends which room, love. Why?”
“Oh, well,” Artemis shrugged her shoulders, trying her hardest to look nonchalant. “I’ll be seventeen in May, so I was thinking that I might move out of my mum’s house, that’s all.”
She had thought that she’d sounded casual enough, but clearly she hadn’t, because Madam Rosmerta stopped cleaning the bar and stood up straight, staring at Artemis with her hands on her hips.
“Your mum hasn’t kicked you out, has she?” she asked.
“No! No, she… I just don’t want to live there anymore. It’s fine.”
Rosmerta sighed. “Artemis…”
“No, really. Don’t worry about the room.”
“Now, just hold on a moment, love,” Ros said, reaching across the bar to place a hand on Artemis’ arm. “You listen here. If you ever - ever - need a room, I will find you a room. It doesn’t matter if you're seventeen or you're seventy, if it’s just for one night or if it’s for six months. There will be a room for you here, do you understand?”
“Yeah, of course,” Artemis gnawed on her lower lip. “And how much would that room cost?”
“How about we talk about how much you can afford to pay for the room if or when you need it?”
Artemis nodded, struggling to find the words to respond properly. Rosmerta smiled at her, though her eyes still looked sad. Before she walked away to serve another customer, she touched her palm to Artemis’ cheek, ever so gently.
Rowan and Artemis both stayed sitting at the bar while they ate their lunch, partly because many of the tables were full, but mainly so that they could chat with Charlie Weasley in between him serving punters. Artemis recounted Bill’s stories to him, and Charlie nodded along politely enough, though he looked distracted, as if he were lost in thought, or lost altogether.
“You know, Bill might be coming for a drink later,” Artemis told him, in the hope of cheering him up. “Depends when he gets back from his walk with Penny.”
“They might be gone a while,” Charlie muttered, and Artemis tilted her head at hm.
“Why, where are they going?”
“I’m not sure, actually.”
“Right, well, Bill said to come here later and if he’s not back by the time you finish then we can just go back to the castle together,” Artemis continued. “If that’s okay with you.”
“Yeah, that’s… That’ a good idea. I’d like to walk with you. We can chat. Sounds good.”
With that, Charlie shrugged and walked away. Artemis turned to Rowan, completely mystified.
“Is it just me,” she whispered, “or are these boys being really weird about going for walks today?”
It turned out that Bill was not done with his and Penny’s walk in time for him to meet Artemis for a drink. Instead, Artemis returned to the castle with Charlie, both Rowan and Tonks having gone back with the Ravenclaws. As they walked, they made somewhat stilted conversation, Charlie being very quiet, even compared to his usual standards. By the time they reached the grounds, Artemis was growing frustrated with him.
“Charlie,” she said, staring at him, “you said you wanted to walk so we could chat.”
“Yeah.”
“Do you want to chat, then, or what?”
“Yeah,” Charlie said, again. Artemis glared at him, and he shrugged. “Uh, well, I really wanted to talk to you about something. Something important.”
“Okay,” Artemis frowned. When Charlie didn’t say anything, she sighed, exasperated. “Oh, come on. You want to tell me something, why don’t you just tell me?”
“Because… It’s just difficult, that’s all.”
The look on Charlie’s face made Artemis’ frustration almost disappear entirely. She had thought all term that he had even looking anxious or sad; now, he was both.
“Charlie, you can tell me anything, you know,” she said, earnestly. Charlie sighed, and looked straight at her, a pained smile on his face.
“I know,” he said, quietly. “Alright. The thing is, I-”
“There you are!” a sharp voice called out, and Artemis and Charlie both turned to see the tense face of Percy Weasley, who bore down on them with his arms folded across his chest. “I’ve been looking for you for the last hour, Charlie. Where were you?”
“Three Broomsticks,” Charlie shrugged. “Why, what’s wrong?”
“Fred and George have got detention again. Filch found them with a load of dungbombs that your friends gave them.”
Artemis and Charlie exchanged lances. It was easy to  guess who had supplied the twins with the dungbombs. Charlie took a deep shaky breath, that glazed lost look creeping back into his brown eyes.
“Perhaps if you spent more time concentrating on being a good prefect they wouldn’t get into so much trouble all the time,” Percy continued, either not noticing or not caring about the effect his words were having on his brother. “Maybe you should think about your responsibilities, rather than spending all your time playing Quidditch, or messing about with your friends in Hogsmeade, or writing letters to Godric knows who. That’s what Bill would have done.”
“Shut up, Percy,” Artemis snapped at him, fully aware that Charlie would never do so himself. “It’s not Charlie’s fault that your brothers get into trouble, it’s theirs. And I don’t think you’d be able to do a better job of stopping them anyway.”
“I’d like to think that I’d at least try. I’d at least care.”
“Charlie does care. He cares more than you do, I bet. At least he cares about more things than just a stinking rat and being some poncy teacher’s pet. Honestly, Percy, sometimes it’s like you’ve got a bloody great stick up your-”
“Artemis, stop,” said Charlie, quietly. “Percy, I’ll talk to them later, alright?”
“Later’s not good enough,” Percy said, with a tut.
“You know, sometimes you really are such a-”
“Don’t, Artemis. Please,” Charlie shook his head, and Artemis contented herself with glowering at Percy. “Alright, what do you want me to do?”
“I want you to come and help me!”
“Sorry, Percy, we’re busy right now,” Artemis told him with a scowl, just as Charlie said:
“Alright. Fine. I’ll come now.”
“Charlie, you don’t have to-”
“I do. I’m sorry,” Charlie shrugged his shoulders, and Percy gave Artemis a smug smile as he joined his side. “Look, we can catch up some other time, yeah? I really have to sort this out.”
“I can help, if you like?”
“No offence, Artemis,” Percy said, loftily. “But this is a family thing.”
Offended, Artemis turned to Charlie, who closed his eyes and grimaced.
“Percy, please don’t be rude to my friends,” he said, his voice low and level. Percy said nothing, just stared at Artemis with a haughty expression on his pointed face.
Charlie mouthed another apology before leaving with his brother, and Artemis, still seething, watched them return to the castle together. The sound of a wolf howling in the forest caught her attention, and realising how dark it had become, she wrapped her jacket tight around herself and hurried inside before the full moon rose in the sky.
“You really shouldn’t have given the twins those dungbombs,” Artemis told Tonks in the dormitory that evening.
“Why not? They wanted to prank Snape, I wanted Snape to get pranked,” Tonks yawned, and flopped backwards onto her bed. “I don’t see why it’s such a big problem.”
“Because, every time Fred and George get into trouble, it comes back around to Charlie. It’s just causing problems for our friend.”
“Charlie won’t care. He’s the most laidback peson I know.”
Artemis couldn’t tell Tonks how wrong she was without telling her things Charlie had told her in confidence, so she pursed her lips and said nothing. Across the room, Rowan looked up from the novel she was reading.
“What did Charlie want to chat about, anyway?” She asked.
“Never got to find out, he was about to tell me something when Percy came along and started having a go at him about the dungbombs.”
“What was he going to tell you?”
“Well, I don’t know, do I?” Artemis rolled her eyes at Tonks’ question. “You and your dungbombs saw to that!”
“Penny, you always know everyone’s business before they know it themselves,” Tonks said, sitting upright. “What do you… Where’s Penny gone?”
Rowan and Artemis both looked around the room. At some point during the other girls’ bickering, Penny had slipped out unnoticed.
“It’s almost time for lights out,” Rowan said, with a soft sigh. “She must have gone to check that Bea is back in her dormitory.”
“Really? I thought she was just starting to relax. I mean, she’s been out all day!”
“That’s probably why. She was gone today, so now she’s just panicking.”
“Still,” said Tonks, “She needs to let loose a little. She’s just pushing Beatrice further away.”
“Try telling her that,” Artemis muttered darkly.
“Nah, I’m not brave enough for that.”
Penny returned to the dormitory shortly after, merely nodded her head in response when Rowan asked her if Beatrice was okay, before getting into her bed without another word. The other three girls shared looks of baffled concern, and not much later, they went to bed themselves.
