nano 2022 update day 7!!!
words: 5379 / ~10 000 (i really think it'll be less tho)
my schedule unexpectedly freed up today so i went to the library with the goal of writing as much as i humanly could and I FINISHED WRITING THE CLIMAX!!!!! OF THE ENTIRE TRILOGY!!!!!

now all i've got left is four (hopefully) short chapters to wrap things up for each of the mains... i already know all the elements of what i'll need to write, it's just a matter of getting it onto the page in a semi-coherent way that doesn't feel too infodumpy.

Petra rushed to Finneas' side and threw herself into his open arms. He gripped her tightly against his chest, the leaves on his arms rustling against her hair.
“This wasn’t what I meant when I promised I’d see you again,” he murmured into her curls.
A half laugh, half sob escaped Petra's lips. "At least you kept your promise."
Finneas pressed a kiss into her neck, the tip of his nose brushing against her skin. "I don't want to lose you,” he said, voice strangled.
"I know. I know," she whispered. "But I have to do this."

WIP Wednesday
I have been extremely fixated on my Din/Ez Mandalorian rewrite fic Written in the Stars this past week. I know more people were excited for Loser, Baby (Frankie/Dieter), and I will get to it I swear. Your asks last week helped me flesh out so much for both stories, so I'd love to get more!

Written in the Stars - Din/Ez Mandalorian rewrite (long fic)
The night of the battle, Ezra had awoken to find Mando pressed against his side. Since that night, they’ve drifted closer to each other in their sleep – never quite touching, but the few times Ezra awakes in the middle of the night, Mando is facing him. Ezra wants so badly to reach out and touch him, but he knows Mando would startle and move away. He settles for watching the steady rise and fall of the Mandalorian’s chest.
Mando has been acting strange all day, having quiet talks with Cara and reorganizing his weapons chests. Ezra thinks they may be leaving today.
Ezra watches Mando pull Omera aside. They’ve grown close in the last couple weeks. At least as close as Mando will allow anyone to get. They talk for a while and Ezra sees Omera put her hands on Mando’s helmet.
He’s too far away to get a read on Mando’s feelings about this, but assumes they can’t be good. He’s about to get up, intervene, when he hears blaster fire.
He immediately runs toward Winta, wanting to protect her and the other kids, when he sees Mando stalking toward the woods. He follows and finds Cara standing next to a bounty hunter with a smoking hole in his chest.
Loser, Baby - Frankie/Dieter (one shot)
Frankie gets to the bar in 10 minutes, knowing his friend needs him right now. Frankie had ruined his entire life doing coke. He lost his pilot's license, lost his fiancee, lost visitation rights with his daughter, lost his house. It was an absolute shit show.
Between court ordered therapy, narcotics anonymous meetings, and friends who were willing to keep cookouts on a strict beer only rule, he’d done okay pulling himself out of the trenches.
He’d been a bit shocked when Dieter Bravo, has-been actor and playboy extraordinaire, had walked into his NA meeting. So much for anonymous, yeah?

WIP(s): The Serpents They Stone - In an alternate version of our world where gods lived alongside humankind and brought them to a new level of technological prosperity, the dreaded World Serpent Jörmungandr reveals herself to have survived Ragnarok while rescuing her villainous old flame, the Phantom Queen Badb. Quickly finding herself pursued by the entire world for the prophecy that promises she will end the world, Jörmungandr dedicates herself to saving Badb from the "Black Pharaoh" that enslaves her - even as Badb is forcibly driven to remain sinister and create chaos.
Miasma - Based on the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland & the later Black Death, the island of Ériu is besieged by the foreign Anglii and their High King is killed. His daughter, Hail, dies with him, but she is resurrected by the serpent goddess Corchen with one objective - to kill King Godric across the ocean, no matter the cost. Her mission soon intertwines with that of a mysterious plague doctor's, who seeks to stop an oncoming plague - one that could spell the end of all life.

WIP(s): Maidens and Monsters: sapphic retelling of Scylla’s monsterization, in which she is so beautiful, the ocean (and it’s patrons) cannot help but be drawn to her and too much divine attention in one place always leads to ruin.
Light and What Lies Below: In-between of Maidens and Monsters and OH, in which Calypso makes a deal with Hades, creating Davy Jones’ locker before the sailor is even born.
Ocean’s Heart: Dual POV retelling merging Ogygia Calypso with Davy Jones Calypso, in which when he binds her to a mortal body, he binds her to the island as well.
Her Name is Kore: Persephone/Hades retelling in which Kore knows, even as an unannounced goddess, that she is destined to be something more than just Demeter’s daughter.

The first book is titled Of Flowers and Darkness, which will be a retelling of the myth of Hades & Persephone.

WIP(s): Fuck Gods (also referred to as WIP MILF). Life has not been kind to those at Nueva Vida Institution, a residential facility for “deeply disturbed” individuals. The institution seems normal from the outside, but a group of friends on the inside think that there’s more to this place than meets the eyes: they think it’s a end-of-life sacrificial home for those the gods have chosen, and that their life-forces are being drained. They’ve decided that before the gods can get to them, they’re going to complete their life-long goals of getting closure. And to do this, they plan to kill some gods.

Fair Waters: A novella set in Elementalieverse. | The story follows Elias Hernandez, a photojournalist, and aspiring news writer. He finds himself traveling to the northernmost province of the archipelago after discovering the mysterious case of one of its islands. WIP Wednesday + Music Monday

I'm tagging @galaxycunt @rilli-luci @the-lastcall and anyone else I haven't tagged before!
I'll be sharing two snippets from a *very* old wip, one from way back in February 2019! It's a snippet from the beginning for my second Andromeda series book- a silly little thing I plan on reviving for nanowrimo!
These two snippets don't necessarily come together, as they're both beginnings- one to the beginning of Sabine's narration, and one of the overall narration- the one setting the scene for her grand entrance.
The year was 4490, and the villain had finally entered the scene, stage left of course. Born onto the hellscape called Earth, and quickly traded to a group of rogue aliens for her mother’s passage onto a new planet, far, far away from Earth. Her mother was killed in the cargo hold of the ship that very same night.
This was of no importance to her child, after all, she wouldn’t even remember her mother.
Sabine, hailing from the now desolate, deserted, and dead, Earth. She hated the place. Space there was clogged with remains of the planet; she couldn’t even travel there without her engines backing up with random space debris. The Ruins of Mars were no better; thousands of dead “Rovers” had been standing motionless since their sun had long since died, leaving their many solar panels useless.
The whole galaxy was like this. Deplorable. No society even wanted to set a claw, or foot, or landing gear within a thousand lightyears of the Milky Way. Perfect for Sabine to get to work.
I was bleeding out all over the once-pristine marble floor of the Ciridean palace courtroom, intestines half spilt through the gash in my stomach. Who was that screaming?
“Sabine! Please hold on! The healers- the healers are just a warp down the hall!”
Oh, I guess that was Leon... His antennae, were they always so pink? Were his eyes always so blue? I never noticed. I guess once you’re on the razor-thin edge between life and death you notice things you never thought were important; Like you always thought you’d have time to notice these things, like you would never have the ending to your story.
I guess my story is closing, the last page being written- or perhaps it could be the first page, if we’re going backwards.
I like to pair Sabine with Two Princes by Spin Doctors! She's certainly got a big choice ahead of her- the prince of the Andromedia or her beloved Gamma, the sweet alien she grew up with.

This is from an as-yet-untitled Starbound fanfic. An ash storm has descended on the place Mio's visiting. Everyone is sheltering, but one woman is missing...
My radio chirped. "Captain Mio, your guide is correct: it is much too dangerous for you to attempt this rescue."
"I have one canister of burn spray, a green stim, and the healing nanites in the EEP. I'll be fine."
"I calculate a 79.3% chance that the wife is already dead. There is a 30.45% chance that you will also be injured, should you go after her. The odds are not in your favour, and rapidly decreasing."
"I'd best get a move on then."
"Captain, please consider the bigger picture. Your task is to kill the Ruin. With respect, it is not your job to save these people."
"No? Who's job is it then? Who else is going to go out there and find this woman? Damnit, SAIL, this is why I joined the Academy, to help people. I am a Protector; I am going to protect them."
"Mio, this is highly inadvisable."
"Warning acknowledged and dismissed," I said, hauling open the door.

For the WIP folder ask game, what's the Mafia AU?

So for reference, I’d previously used Danny Pino for Reyes Vidal personal headcanon pictures for writing in Mass Effect Andromeda fics. Danny Pino is mostly known for playing cops—ie Nick Amaro in SVU—and more recently Miguel Galindo in Mayans MC.
So cop Nick (above) vs Miguel (below)—note I really need to think of other names for Reyes’ uncles but you can see where I’m coming from by leaving them unchanged.
If I ever finish this fic, it’s going to be a messy time jump mess back and forth (because I’ve wanted to try that but not sure I can pull it off). I want it to be slightly told retrospectively and then also in medias res.
So, a messy draft emerges that’s half plot notes and half written scene. Cut for length here.
Scott is pulled to the local cop dive bar by his soon-to-be-former partner xxx. He is plied with alcohol by many people from his precinct who’ve come to fete the new detective—Scott is getting his gold shield the next day and today was his last day on patrol. Scott is known some-what derogatorily (and he hates it) as the prince of organized crime—his father is the head of the organized crime unit and runs an elite task force. Scott has determined that he’s going to always make his own way and is obsessed with not being promoted based on nepotism.
While Scott has been focused on his career, he hasn’t always been able to make close connections with his co-workers because of his family. But he’s excited to have earned his gold shield after solving a homicide. Somehow, he’s managed to get attached to one of the homicide squads by pure chance.
Towards the end of the night, he’s bought a drink by a guy that can’t be a cop. He’s wearing too expensive of cologne and gives Scott the up and down look that screams interested. The whiskey is also much more expensive than all the other drinks he’s been downing all night. The smooth purr of the man’s voice and way that he talks to Scott and he’s a goner. They spend hours talking—much after most of Scott’s coworkers have left and they close out the bar at 2am.
Taking a chance, Scott asks Reyes to walk him home and then invites him in for a nightcap. One thing leads to another and Scott ends up curled around Reyes who seems stunned by Scott’s trust in him.
The next morning, Scott wakes to his alarm, warm and still wrapped in Reyes who is dead to the world. Scott reluctantly wakes Reyes, embarrassed that they just got in some heavy making out the night before before falling asleep in his bed. Reyes is adorably mussed but asks what Scott’s plans are for the night.
Scott tells him that he has a family dinner to go to but does give Reyes his cell before seeing Reyes out the door.
Cue frantic getting ready and in uniform for getting his detective’s shield only to be told to hurry up and wait when he gets to the ceremony. It’s a group ceremony and he’s getting his shield with about ten other people—all of which are older than him and with more experience.
There is an awkward moment during the ceremony when his father gives him his gold shield—Scott hadn’t know that his father was going to do that. He’s somewhat choked up about it but his dad ruins the moment after the ceremony when asking him what took so long. Scott is emotionally crushed at that comment but puts up a good front. Sara who also took the day off to celebrate her twin’s accomplishment plays peacekeeper. There is an awkward family late lunch in a fancy restaurant that Scott’s always wanted to try but he barely touches his food—unable to taste anything.
Scott’s new squad in homicide:
Partner and Sargent: Cora Harper
Lieutenant. Drack Nakmor
Other detectives: Liam and Vetra
Coroner: Lexi T’Perro
CSI tech: Suvi Anwar
Electronics assistance/mechanic: Gil Brodie
Reyes Vidal is the new blood that is running the show for his uncle.
Reyes’s family/leadership structure:
Uncle Miguel is the boss—Known as El Padrino.
Uncle Nick—Miguel’s twin. Not raised with Miguel. Became a police officer and works in the same city as Scott. Disavows all involvement with the family business but still tries to look out for Reyes. Is a homicide detective but for a smaller precinct. Competent at his job but has never been really promoted due to his family associations which are known by the police powers that be.
Bain Massani—cartel associate. Was assigned to look out for Reyes. Is an enforcer for the cartel. Has his own code of honor and follows it. Is amused by Scott and calls him Reyes’ little duck.
Scene (warning for first draft)
Scott hadn’t stopped shaking—but he wished he could.
The nurse with the kind smile had pushed him back into one of the hard plastic chairs that lined the waiting room and pressed a styrofoam cup of burnt, acidic coffee into his hands, encouraging him to drink it and settle. The two sips he’d managed to suck down had eaten at his throat, burning as the bitter coffee did little to soothe him. She’d said she’d be back when she had news or if the doctor was needing to speak to him before escaping to the nurses station at the far corner.
He just couldn’t stop the tremble in his hands that still had dried blood on them, under his nails and across the finger pads making them feel gritty with the dark brick red color fading into brown and making each crease n the skin stand starkly out.
The waiting lounge was mostly deserted at this time of night, a housekeeper had even had him lift his legs so she could vacuum under them before working her way down the row of chairs covered in fabric that nobody in their right mind would have chosen any decade except maybe the 80s. The hot pink faded to more dusty rose and the electric blue triangles and purple squares had also faded into just being tired. There was a small vending area in the corner where the soda machine hummed loudly—the only noise in the silence of the surgical waiting area at almost a quarter after midnight.
He couldn’t stop replaying in his mind what had happened. Hunching forward, he clutched at the cup of cooling coffee and tried not to hyperventilate.
Reyes had been shot.
Twice.
And now he might not survive surgery.

Holy shit! It took me a while to answer these. I tried to keep the answers as brief as possible. Post is going to be long af.
Which WIP of yours has the longest chapters and which one has the shortest?
Havenpoint has the shortest chapters (1500-2000 words) and Defenders has the biggest (2500-3000 words)
2. What is your most self indulgent piece and why?
Defenders is definitely my most self indulgent work. It is mainly because I am too emotionally attached to the characters in it and I am afraid that I might just ruin the storyline because of that.
3. Talk about the first character you made
Evelyn Rose was the first character I had ever made. She was an OC for my first and last fanfiction. She also happened to be an author's darling and now that I think about it, she would have been a very annoying and super self indulgent character.
5. When did you start writing ? How ?
I started writing at the age of twelve. An unfinished fanfiction was the first thing I wrote. I really got into writing during covid, when I started writing the original Havenpoint. I started writing Rebel and then I was falling down a rabbit hole. It was just so exciting because I had so many ideas in my head and I could take out and put somewhere.

Kinda hard seeing that even I don't know where I am going with my WIPs. But I think I can give for Defenders.

Romance, I just don't get it.

I had a WIP that I don't remember the name of but I had scrapped it because it sounded too much like Cassandra Clare's shadowhunters.

Verity Hale from Rebel.
14. Describe your writing spot.
I sit on my study desk but not on the side I am supposed to be sitting on. My study desk is placed perpendicular to my bed. So I sit on the bed and place my laptop on the side of the desk where I write. Its right beside the window.
15. Which WIP is your comfort WIP?
Defenders
16. Who is your most traumatized character? What happened to them?
Any character from the batch 1 in Rebel. They have seen war from the frontlines at a very young age and have been used as killing drones.

Rebel is red and black. Defenders is gold and black. Havenpoint would be muted and darkened spring colours.
18. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?
Most of the time, I write as as I go.

The Playground:
Do you remember when we were kids? Kids below the age of ten, running out to play from the early afternoon to the time the sun dipped under the horizon. Do you remember? We would come home and find scrapes on our arms and legs and small bruises littered everywhere. We never knew where they came from. When we became older we thought that we had gotten hurt while playing but never noticed because we were having too much fun. After all, children below the age of ten can get distracted easily.
21. Tell me about an upcoming WIP
I am trying to make a WIP called the Masque. It's mostly about this masque shop. The artists working in the shop make magical masques, some of them based on popular characters in classic books. The masques gives certain abilities to the person who wears them but at the same time they place a curse on them. The longer you wear it the stronger the curse begins. Now the masques are addictive to wear, very addictive because it makes the person into what they think is the perfect version of them.
22. What most platonic friendship you have written?
The relationship between Skyler and Ah-dainn from Defenders.
23. How do you stay on track story-wise?
I don't.
24. Do any of your stories have alternative versions?
Defenders does, in my head.
25. Tell me about the order in which your characters (in any WIP) will die in a horror movie.
Going with the characters in Defenders first.
Ah-dainn would die first trying to protect somebody.
Jay would die second because he didn't want to listen to Skyler and did something stupid.
Ren would go next because she found a creepy doll and tried to kill it.
Ivy would die trying to escape from a window.
Skyler is the ghost.

C: i really really really love the conversation between garrus and castis in the homeworlds comic. obviously that comic has done a number on me because i haven't known peace since i read it, but also just...the emotional impact of garrus calling his father and essentially saying "i'm dying." and castis just calmly trying to talk him out of it..... it hits hard.
S: when he gets Big Mad at you for hanging up on the council for the millionth time
Idea for a story
V: i may or may not be writing a story right now about victus and castis meeting after the war and talking about the war and being a father and pushing your sons to be what you need them to be instead of meeting them where they are and discussing old times in their field unit days and acting on old adolescent feelings for each other now that they're old and weary and tired and need Something Good
C: ok well i also have a wip about sidonis rescuing garrus's family on palaven, and it's mostly from sid's perspective, but i'm trying to explore castis's reaction to their conversations. he hears sid talking about garrus (without knowing that's who he is talking about -- sid knows who castis is but not the other way around) and it opens something up in him, makes him have some realizations of his own about his relationship with solana and garrus that he's already been struggling with (more on this below!) as well as putting the war in perspective in a way that sort of opens him up to victus, who's been messaging him from the normandy upon working with garrus and being unable to not be reminded of a young castis, and he messages castis hoping to find some tough love since they used to butt heads a lot in basic about their conflicting styles and he wants someone to be realistic about his situation as primarch, but they end up talking every night as sad dilfs do until they lose contact the night cipritine is attacked which happens to coincide with the whole tuchanka ordeal and..........well they're both spiraling after that and they deserve a very happy castis-vakarian-giving-the-primarch-of-palaven-a-handjob after that

C: based on the way garrus talks about castis in me3, it seems like garrus thinks that it's himself who grew up a bit and comes around to taking his father's approach seriously when he goes to him with the reaper warning that castis takes to fedorian. i like to think that, actually, castis *has* changed a lot. the man threatened to lock up his own son right before he retires (timing can't be a coincidence, the man was exhausted) and then that son disappeared and only reappeared months later on the day of his apparent death on omega, only to survive and then disappear beyond an uncharted mass relay??? i have to imagine that when garrus finally comes around, castis is just... ready to listen now. he doesn't understand his son, but he worries that he won't get another chance. he can't lose him. so he sits down, and he listens.
S: Sparatus is aro ace and he has a mistress but isn't really sure why tbh???? She's very nice and they play chess together

wip ref sheet for my oc/self-insert, andromeda zalin!! she’s an engineer that specializes in robotics and stealth tech :D she was fired from a company that stole her blueprints and turned them against the world, so she began building her own miniature robots to start sabotaging the factories of said company in an effort to ruin production. she also constantly breaks in to steal back her plans and air the company’s dirty laundry to the world. she wound up getting caught up in a wannabe superhero group, which has calmed her down some—though not totally.

Ooof. Angtiest? *looks* So I've got some Solavellan pieces in compliations which are pretty angsty, but I tend to have hopeful endings at the very least. I guess "angstiest" ending would be one of these two:

I don't actually! I once accidently referred to Thedas as Tamriel in a fic once, but that's as close as I've gotten.

Not in comments or to my face. I'm sure people have said unflattering things about my work, but not to me. Fuck em. I write this shit for me.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I write far more smut than is healthy for someone as Ace as I am. I mostly write f/m stuff, I've done a little f/f (working on one atm), and I've brushed up against m/m in group sex situations. I used to write a lot of m/m a lifetime ago, so I'll probably get back to it at some point.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Le gasp, no. I didn't even know this was a thing.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
OOOOOOOOOOOOF. Asking the hard questions. Based on my wordcount you would probably guess that it would be Solavellan (and I do love it, don't get me wrong) but I'm very partial to Anders related ships. I've personally written a lot of Anders ships (Including my crackship Anders/Trevelyan which I ADORE) and I just like that boy.
So basically like... I don't know dude. All them.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I try not to leave WIPs behind as a rule but I have a couple falling behind that I'm worried about:
a Mass Effect Andromeda fic following Sara from her almost death on Habitat 7 through the game dealing primarily with her relationship with SAM but also her internalized fear of Turians and how it conflicts with her attraction for Vetra and the complexities of the human condition
a Dragon Age fic where Regan Hawke arrives at Skyhold with her entire family (Fenris, their two sons, Bethany, Isabela, and Carver).
15. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm very good at dialog, particularly banter. Also metaphors.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Transitions are the worst for me. Going from one location/time/situation to another is a chore, I just want to be there (explains why I write so many contextless one-shots). Smut takes me forever to write and I have a very hard time injecting emotion into it.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I think it depends on the fic honestly. I use a lot of Elvhen in my fics, any fic I write with Zevran has some Spainish (Antivan), and I've touched French (Orlesian), Tevene, and Qunlot. Sometimes it's translated by the characters, sometimes I provide a glossary in the notes, and sometimes I don't give any translation at all. It depends on the POV and the tone of the work honestly.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Dragon Age. It's all that damn Egg's fault.
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Ooooof. Favorite Fic... I love everything I've written tbh, so I'm just going to do it by category:

Could you give a brief synopsis of your WIP?
sorry for not responding right away, anon
i’m not sure if you want the one that’s finished or the sequel that i’ll be doing for NaNoWriMo, so i guess i’ll just do both!
so first the setting: miami, FL, USA, 2038 (only this is my first novel, so the world building is awful)
andromeda is just a pretty normal girl- going to art school, doing homework, disagreeing with her mom.
until *music intensifies* she is kidnapped.
she doesn’t know his name, so she starts referring to him as Kidnapper.
actually, she doesn’t know anything about him at all.
and he only means to knock her out, but his needle pen has the wrong drug in it and he doesn’t notice until the next morning, which means she doesn’t get the antidote until then, which means she’ll have headaches that will get worse and worse and worse.
a few days later, he brings a her to this definitely illegal club, Rose, and leaves Ro there with his boss.
so now she’s stuck there- no phones, no friends, no art.
and she’s expected to be sexy for a bunch of disgusting men every night?
she has to get out.
so that’s the main plot, but only andromeda’s half. there’s another POV character (you can probably figure out who), but his path is really intertwined with Ro’s, so i’m not including his arc here.
i don’t know how to do the sequel without spoiling the first one (the end of book one includes revealing things about our mystery character), so this is going to be really vague.
setting is still in miami, but a few months later.
this time, we’re introduced to elowen, a 16-year-old who’s pretty lonely.
she runs away from home, and ends up at (you guessed it) Rose.
and she meets Alice (one of Ro’s friends from before she was kidnapped who is now also stuck at rose), Anne (a minor character in book 1), and Ro herself.
alice and elowen strike up a relationship and stuff happens- namely, doing something snooping, because mystery character thinks that rose is a front for something even more illegal.
*music is hopefully very intense*
so yeah that’s it! sorry, it’s not much, but i’m scared to tell you all of it even though it’s not going to, like, ruin a book you were planning to read once you finish the one you’re working on.
