Devin looked at Morgan, not understanding their meaning.
“Lots of people work for Corporation,” he said with a frown. “They’re a giant corporation. They have, like, thousands of employees.”
Morgan shook their head, still looking haggard and exhausted. “Not… not like I did.”
They looked up then, making eye contact with Devin. Devin was shit at eye contact; it was too much, too distracting, and he didn’t understand why it was so many people’s priority for truthfulness and stuff. This seemed important though, so he could deal.
Morgan spoke again, tone serious. “Devin. Before I tell you this, I want to tell you that it’s not something I’m proud of. I left over a decade ago, and I should have left sooner. You’re entitled to whatever reaction you have, of course, but I would ask you to please hear me out before passing judgment.”
Devin swallowed hard, really not liking how this story was going. He nodded to show he understood, though.
“I was in the military, originally,” Morgan said, which was… not how Devin expected this story to start. “I worked with military animals. I saw… so much carnage. It’s not something I’d wish on anyone. It’s bad enough when it’s people, but there’s somehow something worse when it’s animals. Animals don’t… they wouldn’t have been there at all, except for us. We humans pulled them into our mess, trained them and sent them into combat zones without them ever having a choice in the matter. So by the time I was ready to leave the military, I had seen more than enough destruction for a lifetime.
“I decided to go into research after that, so I wouldn’t be working directly with injured animals. And eventually, I was offered a job at Corporation. It was a low tier research position at first, but I was good at it, and I moved up the corporate ladder fairly quickly.
“Nearly twenty years ago now, my boss had me change my research focus. I was told to focus on brain waves, neural activity. It was a few years before I realized I was only part of a larger project. That wasn’t unusual; large projects got broken up into pieces run by smaller teams all the time. Usually, though, all the smaller teams coordinate to work towards the bigger picture. This project? Our superiors were deliberately keeping the pieces separate, not letting us understand the full scope of what we were working on.”
Devin nodded. He knew that was a fairly common practice in shady businesses, splitting awful projects into seemingly innocuous smaller pieces so no one understood what they were truly helping to build.
Blaire was growing steadily more concerned as Morgan spoke, and finally added, “Is this really something you should be saying? It isn’t just you that this exposes.”
Morgan gave a wan little smile to their spouse. “You’re right, but… like we said. It’s time. We’ll have to consult about what to say to the media, but for this? I think it will be okay.”
They turned back to Devin and continued their story. “The other team was studying human brain waves, and were trying to correlate them to the animal brain waves. Eventually, I learned it wasn’t humans in general, but one human in specific. The subject was labeled as Asset 541, and had apparently been given into the custody of Corporation by their parent or guardian.”
Devin shuddered at the thought of anyone willingly giving their child to Corporation.
Morgan nodded. “My thoughts exactly, looking back on it. At the time, though, I didn’t think too much about it.” They shook their head with a rueful smile. “Asset 541’s file noted that the subject came to Corporation with the power to sense animals. And over the years, Corporation had been trying to enhance that power.”
Devin’s eyes went painfully wide. “Corporation was trying to give people powers?!”
“Not exactly,” Morgan said. “But close enough. Do you know how many people have small powers that they never notice, or powers that are just laying dormant? It’s a surprisingly large percentage of the population. Not a majority by any means, but far more than the percentage that has powers enough to notice. Corporation was working on a way to make existing powers more potent, to take small quirks of nature and turn them into superhero level abilities.”
“Or supervillain level abilities,” Blaire added darkly.
Morgan said, “My team’s research was being used in conjunction with the human brain wave research to test Asset 541’s powers and see if the results matched the self-reported phenomena.” Devin must have had a blank look, because they rephrased. “What the asset said they felt or were capable of.”
“The asset was lying about their powers?” Devin guessed.
Morgan nodded. “Exactly.”
Devin shook his head, bewildered by all this information. Then he remembered what happened when he got into information he shouldn’t have, and was caught. “Wait. You couldn’t have been meant to be able to access all this information; how did you manage? Wouldn’t that be really bad if you were caught?”
Morgan nodded grimly. “It would have. But I was already waist-deep in this mess by then, and figured that I should at least figure out what I had gotten myself into. I started making copies of all the information I read—this was years ago, mind you, so there wasn’t as much computer security as there is now—just in case, as well.
“Eventually I managed to put enough pieces of the puzzle together to see, if not the whole picture, then enough to understand the gist of it. Corporation was experimenting to see if people’s powers could be enhanced or changed, and my research was being used to test it. And this wasn’t some abstract thing that I could look away from, not something going on halfway around the world that I could say wasn’t my business. There was a test subject living in the building where I worked, one who was there not because they volunteered, but because they were handed off to Corporation like a hot potato.
“And my research was getting into areas I wasn’t comfortable with, too. My superiors wanted my team to start looking at the neurological patterns that corresponded to pain responses. We were being made to torture Asset 541 by proxy, because it was believed that they had developed the ability to bond and communicate with animals rather than merely sense them, but was refusing to divulge that information.”
Communicate with animals… no. It couldn’t be.
Could it?
“Are you saying,” Devin said, very slowly, “that you were part of a team of scientists. Doing human experimentation. And that your test subject. The person you were helping torture. Was Avery?!”
Blaire winced. Morgan looked grim. “Yes, I was. Indirectly, but yes.”
Devin felt a bit like he’d been hit over the head with this realization. He didn’t even have words; he was just too stunned.
“I kept all the information I gathered,” Morgan said. “And when Corporation inevitably found out what I’d been doing, it was already too late. Avery had escaped by then; somehow, a lab mouse managed to steal my keycard during a rather unexpected evacuation drill.” They smiled at that.
“But Corporation wasn’t exactly… pleased with what I’d done, either. So I made a deal with them. I would retire, with full benefits, and a guarantee that Corporation would never come after me. In return, I wouldn’t send copies of all the information I gathered to every major news network in every country where Corporation operates. And if anything happened to me, whether it was a car crash or a bad case of food poisoning, if they tried to get rid of me in any way, shape, or form, that information was set to go out automatically.”
Morgan folded their hands, apparently done with their story. Devin stared at them, incredulous. “So you find out all this information, you gather it up, and what. You just use it to make sure you have a cushy retirement?!?”
“It’s not that simple,” Blaire said.
“It seems pretty simple from where I’m sitting!” Devin said.
Morgan shook their head. “It was barely after I retired that we came out here and first met Avery. I had never seen her in person before, but I knew who she had to be. I wasn’t just protecting myself by keeping this information secret; I was protecting her, too.”
“You’ve met her,” Blaire said, looking pleadingly at him. “How do you think someone like that would fare in a media frenzy? If that information went public, she would never have any privacy again. She would be expected to testify against Corporation, would be dragged through the whole circus act such a trial would become.”
Devin couldn’t. He couldn’t even.
What was he supposed to say to something like that!? Yeah, there were some selfish reasons in there, but Blaire had a good point about Avery being pulled into a trial against Corporation.
There wasn’t a good answer.
But there was a good point he had to make.
“If this is all true, you probably should dust off whatever floppy disk you saved that information on, and make sure that lawyer you called is a good one,” Devin said. “Because if Lynnura has escaped from Corporation? She and Avery need all the protection they can get.”

Avery managed to catch Lyn as she fell, keeping her from hitting the floor. She wasn’t unconscious, Avery didn’t think so at least, but she wasn’t in good shape, either.
Avery started patting her down for injuries, flooded with memories of how she and Lyn would both do this to each other after the scuffles they managed to get into together. But now was not the time for reminiscing; she had to focus.
Lyn was warm, too warm—warmer than a human should be. Her olive skin looked pale, even more so than the months away from sunlight could account for, and a thin sheen of sweat had broken out on her forehead.
Avery kept going. Lyn was wearing a thin tank top, now soaked through with sweat, and there was an odd sort of shape underneath it… Avery grabbed her knife and cut the tank top off, not willing to move Lyn to remove the top the normal way. And there it was—bandages.
It looked like Lyn had ripped up some kind of shirt—scrubs, maybe?—and wrapped it around her midsection to act as bandages. The makeshift bandages were also sweat-soaked, and a little blood was starting to peek through.
~Bandages~ she told the wolves, who rushed off to grab the bag Avery stored them in.
Avery carefully cut through the makeshift bandages Lyn had applied, and gingerly peeled them away from her skin.
That was… that was a lot of blood. And was that—
Was that a bullet hole?!
Avery looked down at her beloved, and forced her brain to take in the whole picture rather than just the disparate parts.
Lyn had escaped. Lyn had run here. And somewhere in that timeframe, Lyn had been shot.
She’d been coherent enough to bandage herself, and to get back to their home. Now it was up to Avery to take it from there.
First off: had the bullet gone all the way through? She gently tipped Lyn onto her side, eliciting a groan of pain. There was no exit wound, meaning the bullet was still inside her.
The shot was too low to hit Lyn’s ribs or any of the organs they protected. So instead, it had ripped into her guts.
This… this was far beyond what Avery knew how to treat. She needed help. She needed to get Lyn to a hospital, and fast.
Fuck.
The three wolves all stood at attention by Lyn’s side. They had picked up on Avery’s tension, her fear, and were waiting for her to tell them what they could do.
Earl was the one carrying the bag of bandages, holding it by the handle to avoid contaminating the bandages themselves. Avery grabbed several hastily, folding one into a pad that she pressed against the entrance wound. She wound another around Lyn’s torso, tying it tight to keep pressure on the still-bleeding wound.
Fuck!
This was the downside to living in the middle of nowhere. She was miles from help, from any roads or infrastructure. The closest help would be—
Morgan and Blaire! They would be able to take Lyn to the hospital, if Avery could get Lyn to their house. Of course, that meant that Avery had to get Lyn to their house.
She picked her beloved up, carrying her in her arms like a new bride—if brides whimpered in pain and were half-delirious with fever.
Carrying Devin, it had taken nearly three hours to get to Morgan and Blaire’s house. That had been at a walk, a slow walk at that to avoid jarring the pup’s injured ribs.
This wouldn’t be a leisurely walk. This was going to be a run.
She was racing against the clock to see if she could get Lyn to help in time.

; about Spira - through the Fiends Tales
I said I would have done it, and here it is. While not being a very good in-game mechanic, one which can even be soft-locked in case YRP level up too fast, the Fiend Tales in FFX-2 aren’t completely silly, or useless in my opinion. They offer much to think about, mostly because they do reflect a non-idealized vision of Spira -- contrary to what Tidus’ POV may offer us, before shifting into something else, something bigger and closer to reality. The Fiend Tales are, in fact, stories of Spirans, people who died somehow and turned into monsters -- some before, some during and some other even after the events of both FFX and FFX-2.
They narrate their tales to Yuna, presumably (she has to catch them, after all), and find a way to either ascend to the Farplane or to avenge their death, if violent one. They are common folk, priests, heretics, Al-Bheds, elders, children even -- ! What I found fascinating was that their tales did offer slices of common life of all major Spiran cities, routines, dangers for certain workers and habits, even traditions... all part of a Spira we haven’t really seen in-game; for what use is a firework festival in Besaid to a future Summoner or their Guardians ready to eradicate Sin, for example hmm ? Yet it exists, in the FFX universe. SO. I decided, for rp sake and to also make things a tad tidier, to list and explain here some of the things about these Spiran Tales that I consider cute, funny, important or worth some more thoughts.
I’ll leave the specific Tales next to the info, too.
-- Children in Spira attend a school, the Temple School. Obviously founded by the Temple, it makes sense it provides a basic education while indoctrinating them to Yevon -- which isn’t hard to do anyway, before and during FFX; orphaned children are also taken by the Temple / Temple schools, most likely trained to either become priests or warrior monks in adulthood. Monks, specifically, are trained to what gets called ‘Yevon Academy’, which prepares them for military life; its volunteers move to this academy and don’t see their family till they graduate, but can write them letters. [ Doggo the Coyote, Big Mama the Protochimera, Jaws II the Xiphactinus, Happy-Birb the Peregrine ]
-- The Tale of Happy-Birb is very sad, and refers to children and temple. I feel it gives us a good example of how hard life could be, for... a rather gifted kid.
“ I always kept to myself in a tiny room in the temple, staring outside my window. I had no friends, no family to look out for me. If I were to suddenly vanish one day, would anything be different? Since I was supposedly orphaned after an attack by Sin, I was raised in the temple of Kilika. They tell me my parents were killed by Sin, but I know it’s a lie. Why would I be the only one to survive? The monks told me I had to be strong to provide hope for the future of Spira. I didn’t want to go on living in such a sad world. So I decided to take a gamble. One night, I fled the temple. [...] But when I encountered a fiend in the woods, I froze. I don’t want to die, I screamed. I truly wanted to live. ”
Don’t the monks’ words sound familiar, to you? It’s speculation, but it sounds like this child exhibited the potential to become a Summoner, his family refused to let him train as one and they were disposed of -- so that the child could come into the “custody” of Yevon and ‘provide hope’. Summoner potential isn’t hereditary, mind that, but you kinda get the mentality that might have made Braska think Yuna wasn’t safe in the religious capital of Spira. The boy, here, was just ten years old.
-- Spira has a considerable amount of criminals, for a world that should - utopically, be united by the tragedy Sin represented for everyone. Thieves considering burglary their very ‘grand career’; killers having no remorse in deceiving old people to obtain their inheritance; Al Bhed hitmen sent to kill Yevonite children in temples or wandering priests, children kidnappers, kids thieves in Luca killing one another for money, etc. [ Bulbasaur the Purpurea, Mittens the Couerl, Brick the Bicocette, Bolt Josh ]
-- Engagements are a quite serious thing, considering a family could not bless the union if the suitor was of a lower class (even between relatively common people), or just too poor to be deemed worthy. A refined girl from a well-to-do family in Bevelle was forbidden, for example, to love a young sailor. Engagement rings are also a thing, and the Moonflow riverbanks are lovers’ favorite dating spot. [ Frosty the Flan Pallido, Boko the Chocobo, Venom the Gucumatz ]
-- So many Tales from children, it kinda gives off a very sad vibe considering they too can turn and not reach the Farplane. Many are attacked by monsters, some lost in the desert, way too many others have drowned by the Moonflow when left unsupervised. One Tale tells even of a young thief, a child, who died in jail. Being Spiran kids seems dangerous. [ Lesser Josh, Squelch the Amorphous Gel, Scooter the Vespa, Nexus the Dark Elemental, Widow the Black Elemental ]
-- The Tales narrate of children’s stories and legends. To make their children behave, tell them to stay put and be good, else ‘they will turn into fiends’: the more they misbehave, the uglier their monster form will look. Another old legend says spirits of people who died a violent death make their way to the Moonflow to bloom with the moonlilies. I found this last one is very similar to the old bedtime story in the FFX novel, where Old Spirans believed the souls of the dead bloomed as flowers in the Farplane. With the advent of Sin, though, and the spread of religion, this tale was forgotten. [ Petal the Ochu, Cyanide the Assassin Bee ]
-- The Temple of Macalania is sinking, as Shiva’s Fayth is no more and there is nothing to freeze the lake now. Many people remained trapped in their rooms inside and died during the sinking, like some wives and children of Macalania priests, for example. The few survivors performed their funeral . [ Mayo the White Elemental ]
-- Apparently, people living near Gagazet have a rite of passage for adulthood, which takes place as a boy reaches 20 years of age. He must climb the peak of the mountain alone in the dead of the night and bathe in the first morning lights. Needless to say, it’s quite dangerous, but the Tale is pretty funny. [ Wuff the White Fang ]
-- The excessive usage of machina, by the time of FFX-2, is starting to pollute the water and air. It is said fish and birds are starting to suffer because of it. [ Daisy the Haize ]
-- The punishment for murder, in Spira, is execution. Hissss the Kukulkan was sentenced to death, mistaken for the killer when he was a mere witness of said murder. He spent one year in the cell of Bevelle -- most likely Via Purifico ones (all monsters in Via Purifico are people who were executed nearby -- aside from Omega who was taken to the ruins), to then being sent to the gallow.
-- Malboros have very long lifespans. Their average one is about 300 years, and a legend says the insides of a Malboro over 500 years old are linked to the divine. There’s a legend of a monk who was swallowed by a 700-years-old Malboro, survived the digestive fluids and returned to his people with his battle garb still on. [ Vape Nation the Malboro ]
-- In Luca, if the Goers win Blitzball matches, pubs and bars offer everyone free drinks. In Kilika, instead, barmaids also dance, which is seen as quite the spectacle. Men usually flock to those bars to drink and also bring gifts to the most beautiful dancers, even ending up in fights for their attention. [ Jub Jub the Archaeothyris, Venom the Gucumatz ]
-- Religious Spirans believe in reincarnation. Yuna mentions it in the Ultimania too, referring to her father, and theorizing if, one day, she’ll ever have the chance to meet his soul again, born anew somewhere in Spira. It kinda goes against the principle of souls dwelling in the Farplane, but it’s useful to remember those are mere illusions anyway. A tale says that ‘when looking into the water of an oasis after a sandstorm, you can see yourself in a past life’. [ Venom the Gucumatz ]
-- Footage of Zaon becoming a Fayth exist, and are stored inside long-gone and deactivated machina still found near Zanarkand Ruins, which once served to protect the couple during the Machina War. One of these footages shows Zaon embracing Yunalesca, and her promising him her love and to return safely. [ Punt the YAU71 ]
-- Music seems important in Spira. Yevon Maesters hire musicians, since the most popular music seems to be Yevonite one -- religious, solemn type, played with harps, horns and strings. There seems to be an annual Yevonite concert for the Maesters too. Still, Spira’s most rebellious teens have started rejecting such old-fashioned music and guitars are spreading among youth nowadays. -- At some point in Braska’s pilgrimage, the trio arrived in Bikanel and got separated. A Cactuar and Jecht met at the oasis; the man taught the friendly fiend how to play Blitzball and signed its ball.
“ A guy with a huge sword wandered into the oasis. He had strayed from his traveling mates, and he stayed with me for three days. He taught me how to blitz! We didn’t speak the same language but I had fun. I’m clumsy, so it takes a lot of practice to get better. He used to say ‘The only thing the untalented can do is practice!’ with a big laugh. [...] I heard a rumor that said he was dead, but it’s just a rumor, right? ” [ Needler the Cactuar ]
-- A Besaid Festival exists, and it includes a fireworks moment. While Luca has a Eating Contest, where the competitors have to eat 200 crispy-outside, juicy inside Luca sandwiches. Silence in Atlas 20/?
Once more, this is a dark take on Volume 7 from a Bumbleby standpoint. It has scenes of graphic violence. If there are any specific trigger warnings I will specify it.
Hello, everyone! Like always thank for the support and all the comments. They fill me with joy and strenght to write. I didn’t think I’d have time to write this last few days but thank you insomnia jajaja SO HERE WE GO! :D

“Everything seems fine” Doctor Yu said as he looked at the documents in his hands. “We’ll send you home today” Blake smiled like she hadn’t since she was taken. Leaving the hospital was so exciting. She was finally going to be able to start rebuilding her life, go back to doing what she was supposed to be doing: being a huntress.
“That is so good to hear, doc” Yang replied. “Do we need to take any kind of precautions?”
“I know you are both huntresses so just take it easy at the beginning. I’m sure you’ll be able to get back to your life soon. Just don’t overdo it at first, okay?” Blake nodded in response. She placed a hand on her chin and moved it forwards in the direction of the doctor.
“Blake says thank you” Yang translated. The doctor looked at them with a puzzled look on his eyes.
“Yeah, I got it” he said “You are learning sign language?” he asked, feeling both a tug in his heart and a smile on his lips.
“We are” the blonde answered. “We don’t know how long it will take before she gets her voice back so in the meantime…”
“I wanted to talk to you about that” Yu interrupted. “We have sent Ms. Belladonna's test results and analysis to the top experts in bioengineering. They are working on a solution for her and for the other faunus who had they cords cut”
“Thank you so much, doc” Yang said. She was so glad this man was Blake’s main doctor. She couldn’t imagine how things would have turned out if they got someone else. She knew there were several doctors that had refused to even see the faunus.
“Don’t thank me, Ms. Xiao Long” he replied “I’m just doing my job and I want what’s best for my patient. By the way, you need to come back in a couple of days to get that cast removed” Yu added as he pointed at Yang’s left hand.
“Okay, doc, I will”
“Would you mind coming with me so we can take an x-ray to see how it’s healing?” he asked. Yang didn’t want to leave Blake alone but as soon as she turned to look at her, the faunus placed both her index fingers in the corners of her mouth and moved them forwards.
“Okay, I’ll go” she replied “I’ll be back soon, baby” she said as she kissed her girlfriend’s forehead. Both her and Doctor Yu exited the room and walked silently for a couple of minutes. It took Yang a while to realized they were going to his office.
“Weren’t we going to take an x-ray of my hand?” she asked. The doctor continued walking as he replied.
“Your hand is going to be fine. We need to discuss something else”. Yang could feel her heart beating in her ears. The last time Yu had given her news in his office she ended up beating a wall until she broke two fingers. Once they arrived both of them sat down. Deep breath.
“So I read Ms. Belladonna’s statement to the military” the doctor said. “And she makes no mention of any sort of sexual assault”.
“So that means that it didn’t happen” Yang replied, feeling some of the weight off her shoulders.
“Not exactly. There are many women that prefer not to report this sort of things. However, an official statement is a serious matter so I’d like to believe she hasn’t hidden anything”
“I’d like to think so too”
“As her significant other I would advise you to talk about the subject at some point, maybe she’ll be more honest with you than she was with the officer”. Yang nodded. That wasn’t a conversation she’d look forward too but she was probably the only person that could actually talk to Blake about the matter. She prayed her girlfriend’s statement was true.
“Doc, could you do me a favor?” she asked. The doctor looked at her with questioning eyes.
“Sure” he answered.
“Are there any specific names that she mentioned on the statement? They won’t let me read it”. She wanted to know who had hurt Blake. She wanted a name so she could focus all of her rage on that person and find them. Don’t kill anyone. Did that mantra even make sense at this point?
“I’m breaking every single protocol right now” Yu looked down, took a deep breath and then looked up into lilac eyes. “There are two names that she mentions a lot: Aleph from The Traders and Yudok from the mine”. Yang knew the people from Staub were in military custody and would be sent to jail soon so Yudok was already done for. The other man, however, was still out there with his fucking gang.
“Aleph” she said between her teeth. That was the name of the man that had put a shock collar on Blake and had electrocuted her to the point where her aura couldn’t even heal her. The man that had starved her and then sold her like she was an object. She made a vow, right there at the doctor’s office, that she would find this Aleph. What she would do next wasn’t really clear.

“I wasn’t expecting any visitors” Agape said with a smile “But all my friend’s from high school came to see me. Even some that aren’t actually my friends. It felt nice”.
“Seems lovely” Blake wrote on the scroll tablet.
“Have your friends come to see you?” the bear faunus asked. Blake nodded in response and wrote once more.
“All of my team came”
“That sounds great” the girl smiled. “And your parents?” she questioned.
“They are in Menagerie. The lockdown won’t let them come and see her” Yang replied as she entered the room. Neither faunus had realized the blonde had arrived, both of them lost in each other’s company.
“Yang!” Agape exclaimed. “It is so nice that we finally got to meet each other”
“Right back at you” the blonde replied. “Blake told me what you both went through” she added, offering the younger girl a handshake. Agape shook her hand with a smile. The blonde then walked towards her girlfriend. When she was close enough to the bed she gently placed a hand on the faunus’ cheek. “Hello, gorgeous” she said flirtatiously “Are you here very often?” Blake grinned.
“You two are just too cute together” the bear faunus said. Both young women blushed as they looked away from each other. Blake turned around, pulled on Yangs jacket and pointed at her cast..
“My hand?” she asked and then remembered the excuse Yu had used to talk to her alone. “It’s fine. Doc says three more days and they’ll take it off”. Blake smiled in response and Yang felt awful for lying to her.
“So, Yang” Agape called and the alluded one turned around to face her “How did you two meet?”
“We met in Beacon Academy” the blonde recalled as she sat down on her chair. “I wanted Ruby, my sister, to talk to someone and I just saw Blake and went for it. She wasn’t very into it at first”. Blake laughed silently as she pointed to herself. Then she held one hand in front of her while the other one hovered above it with two fingers extended. “You were being antisocial, that is what you were doing” Yang teased.
“What did she say?” Agape asked, wanting to get the joke.
“Oh, sorry” the blonde replied. “She says she was reading. Which she was but…”
“If she was reading why did you pick her?” the bear faunus asked. Yang asked herself the same question. There were lots of other people around, why did she choose Blake? Maybe she knew. Maybe she had always known. She had felt it before she even knew what it was.
“I don’t know” she answered finally “For some reason it just made sense. I just felt it”.
“And how did you became part of the same team?”
“Well… We were kinda thrown into the air and paired up with whoever we saw first once we landed” Yang saw how Agape’s eyes opened wide in disbelieve. There was something very comforting about the younger girl’s presence. She laughed a bit before speaking again. “I guess it was just meant to be”.
Blake looked at her and moved her head sideways as she pointed at herself. Then she made fists with her hands, both with the thumb extended, and moved them forwards. Finally, she pointed at Yang.
“You followed me?” the blonde exclaimed and her girlfriend nodded.
“I think I just might die from cuteness overload here” Agape said, the picture in front of her too sweet to process.
“Why did you follow me?” Blake smiled as she took the scroll tablet. She hadn’t learnt the sign for what she wanted to say yet. The faunus’ wrote something and turned the screen towards Yang and Agape.
“I felt it too”

Glaciality Chapter 4: "Partners"
Cassidy agressively dragged Slush down the vast hallway by the arm with a soft growl. The woman couldn't stand children, her boss knew this, and yet here she was stuck working with them anyways!
"Come on move it already!" She exclaimed as she yanked at the small canine's arm, causing Slush to yelp.
"Would you quit with the tugging already? I'm going as fast as my legs can carry me!" Slush snarled in response, lightly glaring up at the head nurse with disgust.
"Do you want to get shocked again, brat?"
Slush clenched her jaw, deciding to not even dignify the woman with a response. The husky averted her gaze to the shiny white tiles below her feet, now seeing the ice that remained coated over parts of her body.
'That's never happened before...'
She thought to herself with a soft sigh.
'Guess I got more stressed out than I thought.'
Her train of thought was broken by another tug from Cassidy.
"Go in here. Hurry up." The woman shoved Slush into a small closet like room, that was dimly lit by a single light bulb. Slush folded an ear before looking toward the woman with a confused look. "Put on those clothes there, quickly."
"It's...a little big don'tcha think?" Slush asked as her eyes settled on the orange and white t-shirt along with matching orange pants that was neatly hung up on the wall.
"Just put it on and quit asking questions!"
Slush scoffed as she glanced back at the suit once more. She shook her head lightly as she began to remove her hospital gown.
'Really, orange? What am I, a prisoner? I mean at least it's not yellow...but still couldn't they have picked purple or something?'
She reached out for the shirt, only to come into contact with a rather thin and scratchy material causing her fur to rise as she pulled her hand away in disgust.
'Ick...that feels ugly.'
"256 would you hurry it up already?"
"I'm going I'm going." She remarked as she reached for the shirt once more, taking it off it's hanger before putting it on.
Once she got it on straight, the shirt hung down to just above her knees. She then reached for the pants and attempted to put them on as well, but the pant legs practically covered her feet entirely, and they felt as if they were threatning to slide off at any moment.
"I'm sorry ma'am but these are way to big." Slush opened the door of the closet before looking up at Cassidy who clearly didn't care.
"Too bad. You'll just have to work with it." She reached over and grabbed Slush by the arm once more before dragging her off yet again.
"Seriously?" Slush stumbled and tripped over the pant legs, causing them to nearly fall off of her but she caught them by the waist using her free hand. "You knew I was leaving, so why didn't you have anything prepared?"
"We don't have anything in your size runt, you're only about 2'0", and most mobian huskies are at least 3'2" by your age. I honestly thought you were 6 by your height alone." Cassidy said in a snarky tone before laughing.
Slush's ears pinned back as she let out a small snort in response.
'When I grow some more, we'll see who the real runt will be.'
Slush remained silent as Cassidy continued to drag her along, only letting out a small gasp upon seeing a large group of children up ahead, around 100 or so that were beginning to line up against the wall.
"What's going on?" Slush asked.
"This is where you will line up, and then you'll fill into the assembly hall." Cassidy responded. "255, 257 raise your hands."
A parrot and a lamb who were standing by one another reluctantly raised their hands.
"What for?"
"You're going to be paired up." Cassidy began to push Slush toward the two creatures. "Now go stand between those two."
"Uh...alright?" Slush folded an ear before reluctantly making her way to the other two children with their hands up. The lamb and parrot made a bit of space for her to stand between in response as they put their hands down. "What does she mean by paired up?" Slush asked in a quiet whisper.
"From what I understand, these people have designated us some kind of work partner. Not so sure what happens next." The female parrot whispered softly.
'Work...partner? Why would we need that?'
Slush thought to herself as the line began to move into the assembly hall.
"Alright kids, you are to sit in order starting from the front row to the back once you enter the dome of the assembly hall." One of the facility staff called out over an intercom. "Do not get out of order, and do not disobey instructions. There will be consequences for disobedience. All questions will be answered by the speaker before the pairing session begins."
Slush glanced around as they slowly filled into the assembly hall, the ceiling was a large glass dome and snow could be seen falling and sliding off the outside of it. The wind from the storm outside could be heard ever so slightly as it whipped its way around the building. She then turned her attention to the red velvet theater-chairs that were lined up in various rows. The bottom half of the hall could hold up to 350 people, and the upper floor of the hall seemed like it could easily hold another group of 300 people.
Once all the children settled into their seats, the lights of the hall dimmed slightly as what seemed to be G.U.N. soldiers shut the doors of the hall. Two soldiers stood at every exit door, and about 10 more stood at the foot of the stage as the stage lights came on.
Pure silence fell across the room as a male cougar made his way to the oak podium that sat in the center of the stage, holding a few notecards in his hands as well as a tablet of sorts. He laid the tablet on the podium before straightening his cards, looking up at the crowd of young children with his vibrant Amethyst eyes.
"Good evening children," the cougar began. "Welcome to the Whispervale Sanctuary for Gifted Children of Wildelynn, or The W.S.G.C.W. for short. You shall all refer to me as Headmaster Kanjiro." The cougar glanced down at his cards, flipping one of them over before looking up at the children again.
"I am certian you all are disoriented and confused as to why you are here, so I will be answering a few questions before we pair you with your statistically chosen partners. Please place your hands on the of your identification plates found on your collars if you have a question. If I call your number, keep your hand on your identification plate until a microphone is passed to you. Do not speak unless you are selected please, and I'd suggest you be respectful if you know what is good for you."
A majority of the children lifted their hands to the metal plates found on their necks as Kanjiro glanced down at his tablet. The tablet appeared to have a map of the theater, and the children who had their hands to their plates could be seen as small red dots on the map.
"161. Your question please." A microphone was passed to a male eagle owl.
"Why are we here?"
"As we do annually, we select 650 children that are age 10, that have promising abilities to be taken into this facility. Due to Wildelynn's rising crime rates, we plan to make better officers for the city. Each and every one of you show promising abilities that could prove to be useful in lowering the crimerate of the city." He glanced down at his tablet once more. "427."
"Why do you only pick 10 year olds? Why not teenagers or adults?"
"You are at the perfect age, any younger than 10 children tend to be immature and difficult to manage. Any older, such as a pre-teen or teenager tends to be rebellious, and you are at such an age where we can easily put a stop to that rebellious stage before it starts. As for adults, although they can still learn, it often takes longer for them to grasp information and their bodies aren't as agile." He glanced down at his tablet before setting his gaze upon Slush. "256."
"But aren't many adults already going through police and military training? And aren't their laws against kids working?" Slush asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes, but as stated before they learn slower and their bodies aren't as agile. We can train your body to do things in your youthful state, which will grant you exceptional flexibility and durability as you get older. And yes, you are correct. But the first 5 years you will spend here will involve vigorous training. Once you turn 16, you will begin regular patrolling. Given that you survive the first 5 years." The cougars face darkened slightly, his tone becoming rather grim.
'Survive? What exactly is he trying to say here?'
Slush thought to herself.
"421."
"Will we ever get to see our families again?"
"No. You belong to the government now, your parents have no custody over you, nor any say in what we do to you starting from the moment you set foot in this place. You will never see them again, unless they are the victims or perpetrators of a crime."
Many of the children became restless at this statement. Many, including Slush were already missing their families as it was, but to be told that they would never see their families again was just soul crushing to say the least.
'So...Dr. Emerson wasn't lying about that. I'm never going to see Dad, or Merci ever again. I can't even visit mom in White Acropolis either...and she'll never know why.'
Slush's eyes became covered in blue and white spirals as she cried lightly, as did many other children.
"332."
"Why are we reffered to as numbers instead of our names?"
"Names are useless here. You are not citizens, but subjects, data. Nothing more. 36 your question please."
"Why were we specifically selected?"
"As stated previously, you show the most promise out of all of Wildelynn's children. A good handful of you, I'm certian will be promoted to Trainee's for G.U.N." he looked down at his tablet once more. "29."
"When you mentioned if we survived...what did you mean sir?"
"The training regimen is not easy. It will be difficult and is adjusted to each of your needs. Some will breeze through it, others may die trying. And if the second outcome occurs, then and only then would you be reunited with your families."
"That's not fair!"
"You didn't even give any of us a choice to be here!"
"I want to go home!"
"I hate this place!"
Many children began to scream in disbelief, some beginning to activate their powers out of anguish.
"I'd suggest you sit back down and remain silent." Kanjiro said with a flat tone as he glared at those who were beginning to rise from their seats. Slush was not one of them, but she stared down Kanjiro as her blue spirals swirled rather violently over her eyes.
The children seemingly ignored the command, until their collars let off a harsh shock, causing them all to fall back into their seats with an outcry as burn marks formed on their necks, around the collars.
"I warned you. Do not make me do it again. Let that be a lesson to all of you." The Headmaster growled, "We have no time for such behavior." He straightened his cards once more before looking back at his cards. "That will be all the questions I will be taking. When I call your initals and plate number, you are to come up on stage, greet one another, and then follow an associate to your temporary rooms. You will have 3 days of team building exercises to get acquainted with one another before your G.U.N. fosters arrive. They will instruct you further."
The children moved slightly in their seats, whispering amongst themselves as they begrudgingly waited for their ID's to be called.
"R.T.S. 150, you are paired with P.E.Y. 500. X.E.Z. 10, paired with U.I.R. 12..."

Slush had her eyes focused on the snow fall that could be seen up above. The headmaster seemed to be taking ages to list off the names and frankly she was getting quite bored. It felt like she had been waiting over an hour, maybe even two and yet he hadn't seemed to even be halfway through all the kids just yet.
"V.A.V. 587, you are paired with S.L.I. 256."
Slush's ears twitched before she looked toward the stage with wide eyes.
"You'd better go..." the children around Slush whispered softly. "Hope you get someone nice."
"Uh...thanks?" Slush rose from her seat, lightly tapping her fingers together as she made her way to the stage. The canine could have sworn that she felt everyone's eyes on her at that moment...and honestly it was quite scary least to say.
'Oh gosh...'
She thought as her eyes focused on a navy blue Belgian Sheepdog that was making her way to the stage. Her fuchsia eyes darting around in fear as her ears were folded flat against her head.
The Sheepdog made her way onto the stage, walked up to Slush and simply gave a small wave before glancing back toward the crowd. Slush glanced back at the crowd as well before gently taking her new partner's hand, causing the other pup to jump lightly in suprise. The canine gazed at Slush with a confused look, she was clearly afraid.
"Come on, we gotta go to the staff..." Slush whispered softly.
"O-okay..." The other pup responded before being guided by Slush to the staff member. From there the two were guided to a room labeled with their ID's.
"In here kids. You'll be notified for dinner, but you are not allowed out of this room until then." A staff member said before closing the door once they were both inside.
Their room was quite bland, only consisting of white and black colors, almost as plain as the ward. The walls were painted white, and the carpet seemed to be pitch black. There were two beds which laid against the walls of the room, they had black comforters, white sheets and white pillows and looked rather stiff. There was nothing else within the room.
The girls silently chose a bed, Slush heading for the one on the right, the other pup for the left. They sat in silence for a moment before Slush finally decided to break the silence.
"So...what's your name?"
"Uh..." The sheepdog looked up at Slush, her ears pinning back. "Vitality...Vitality Valoore..." she glanced away. "And you?"
"Slush Icydra." Slush smiled softly.
The two sat in silence once more for a few minutes.
"I-I'm scared." Vitality managed to choke out, tears forming in her eyes.
"Me too..." Slush's ears pinned back as she looked down at her hands.
"R-really?"
"Yeah...I don't know what to expect."
"I just don't understand why they are doing something like this."
"Me either honestly...it makes no sense to me."
"D-do you...do you think we will make it Slush?"
"Make it?"
"Survive I mean..."
Slush remained silent for a moment, lightly rubbing her hands together.
"Maybe. I don't know."
Vitality covered her eyes with a small whine in response.
"But, that doesn't mean we shouldn't try." The husky said as she glanced up at her companion. Vitality's ear flicked as she removed her hands from her face. "If we try hard enough, if we learn enough...maybe just maybe we can get out of this situation."
"You really think so..?"
"Again...I don't know. But it's worth a shot. Maybe when we get older, they won't be as strict with us. But I really don't know at the moment."
"That would be nice..."
"Yeah."
"Slush?"
"Hm?"
"I know that we just met, but...is there any chance I can get a hug from you? I...I just really need one."
"Yeah, of course." Slush rose up from her bed and began to walk toward Vitality, who met her halfway to the center of the room. Slush wrapped her arms around Vitality into a small hug. "It'll be okay. We just have to work together..."
"Right..."

Tips for calling your electeds, especially if you’re leaving a VM
If you’re leaving a voicemail, make sure you clearly state your name and where you are calling from. (Zip, etc.)
Make sure you have a concrete ask, or specify a specific opinion. Imagine a staffer asking: “What’s the best outcome/resolution for you?” and frame your comment that way. E.g. If you want them to specifically oppose an amendment, say that, and explain why.
Always clarify if you would like a response, and leave a way
for the office to reach you. (Phone number, email, etc.)
If you have another issue, bring it up on the phone at the time. Always personalize your comments.

Steve can tell that something is up with Danny. He’s been quiet at work for the last few days and he knows that’s never a good thing. Steve has been racking his brain all day trying to figure out why Danny’s been so quiet as of late. He thinks that maybe it has something to do with the kids, but what he doesn’t know is that Danny is trying to find a good way to tell him that he’s dating Harry. My question...how do you think Danny would tell Steve about his relationship?!
Ooh~ Yeah I can totally see this.
At first, he doesn’t notice it too much and later curses himself for not noticing it. He and Danny are the leaders of 5-0, a shared control even if Steve himself is recognized as the boss. He and Danny are equals… and it’s part of why they’ve split up more in recent cases. As much as he acts like those lil quips about getting older don’t get to him…they do. But more so they worry him about the effectiveness of the team. So he sends Junior out with Danny when he can so he could learn more about the detective side of things, the civilian way of thinking, while he brings Tani with him to show her a bit of the military way of thinking. Same applies with Lou and Adam even though they have more experience in the field and it depends more or less on the case…
But none of them have come to Steve about Danny being quiet. Then again they don’t know him like he does. He tries to bring him into a conversation, or make him mad and bring him into banter. Not really mad just…to spark up something that’ll let slip whatever is really bothering him. But Danny is guarded. He’s being very specifics with his words and it only makes Steve panic. What could be so bad that Danny’s hiding it from Steve?
The kids were the only logical reason, but they were fine. Grace was healing up nicely and still planning on going off to college… so…Charlie? But no, he seemed perfectly fine the last time Steve saw him. What if it wasn’t an illness or injury though? What if…what if Rachel decided to move again after Grace was off to college? It wouldn’t be absurd…but she was Charlie’s main parent so if she moved…Charlie would have to go with her. People are creatures of habit, and if Rachel didn’t care if Danny followed Grace to Hawaii or not despite that his whole life and everyone he knew and love was in Jersey…who’s to say she wouldn’t do it again? And Danny….the best dad in all of creation who left everything behind to follow his child…he’d do it again, even if it pained him…
That had to be it. Danny was leaving because Rachel was taking Charlie away.
Steve should accept it. He should accept that this was an adult decision and he should be calm and collected and respect the choices made.
Except he did none of that. He made calls to people in high places and was getting ready to call in favors and bring it to court and let Danny have full custody of Charlie. When you save important politicians, befriend rich and influential people, and even some of the shadier criminals who maintain some sort of peace in the rough parts of town…well, Steve’s not one to turn a blind eye to help when it comes to his family. Maybe it was selfish but he knew Danny. He didn’t want to leave. One major move was more than hard enough…he didn’t deserve to be uprooted again.
Except…after some of his friends did a little digging, there was no sign that Rachel was moving off of the island.
So that made him frown deeply. What could be going on with Danny then?
“I can tell him if you want me to.” Harry offered.
Danny shook his head, “It’s gotta be me. This thing with us…it started out as an accidental flame that grew into an inferno…I should have told him from the stage of a spark…this is on me. You’re his friend too but I’m his best friend…just…give me some time to tell him.”
“I still have some loose ends to tie up in England. So no dire rush. But if you want me to be there…just ask.” Harry said before he leaned in to kiss Danny.
Whatever doubts he got usually disappeared with a kiss like that. But he still had to find a way to tell Steve.
Danny racked his brain for what he could do. In the end, he decided to go with the advice of his nan. Let food be the ice breaker. He thought about what he could make to make the conversation go easier…some of Steve’s food came to mind but he wasn’t sure how Steve would react and didn’t want to be the guy who ruined his previous favorite meal or snack with the image of news that could be considered bad. So that also removed banana chocolate chip pancakes too, along with Christmas cookies.
Truth be told…Danny spent many hours surfing through the internet looking for the perfect food to break the news to Steve with. In the end…he decided to go with some fudgy brownies.
He had made a batch the night before, so he had some ready, but he was baking some when he asked Steve to come over. The house smelled like chocolate and he hoped that helped.
“Those for me?” Steve asked.
“Even if they weren’t, you’d steal at least one.” Danny countered.
Some of the tension left Steve’s shoulders that the snarky remark. It was a very Danny thing to say and it felt better than the silence. So Steve grabbed a brownie and asked, “You finally gonna tell me what’s going on?”
Danny sighed but nodded. “I think it’s time…”
The tension returned to Steve as he steeled himself for whatever it was.
“I’m seeing someone. It’s…a guy. A friend…and it’s kinda very serious.”

IN RESPONSE TO NATHAN RELEASING PICTURES OF DAVID’S “ALLEGED” ABUSE OF KAISER...
David has taken it upon himself to make some serious accusations regarding Nathan.
We know all about the messy history between Nathan and David (and really just anyone involved in any way with Jenelle, amirite?). Nathan has repeatedly accused David of abusing Kaiser, and even withheld Kaiser from David and Jenelle for a period of time last year. It was also incidents with Nathan’s friend Ryan Dolph (whom Jenelle allegedly hooked up with) that are rumored to have led to the Jenelle-calling-911-because-David-assaulted-her incident.
Then, just last week, Nathan uploaded pictures of bruises on Kaiser that he stated confirmed his abuse allegations. Following those tweets, David took to Snapchat where he wrote “Nathan raped a 10-year old boy when he was 16 and in high school. His school kicked him out, his mom sent him to Tennessee to live with family. He was ‘rehabilitated’ and they thought he was okay after treatment. I’m sorry but a person who does something like that at a young age should never be allowed in general public. He is a predator and should not even be allowed around children. This is why his visits are supervised and that will never change. Nathan does wear makeup and shave his legs everyday, so I wouldn’t put it past him. He also painted Kaiser’s finger and toenails with pink fingernail polish. I told him he better never do no gay shit to Kaiser like he did to that little boy.”
Now. I was not able to find out specific information about Nathan’s childhood education to see if he moved around schools or not. What we do know is that Nathan has been arrested nine times. That being said, many of his charges are things like driving on a suspended license, giving false information, etc., with his most recent arrest (February 2018) being for “striking fixtures on or adjacent to the highway - failure to report” because he drove away with a gas nozzle still in his car. Nathan has been in a relationship with his current girlfriend for over a year now, and appears to be co-parenting well on the behalf of his daughter (shared with his ex-wife).
Looking at David, his arrest record looks like this:

He also does not have any custody over his son Kaden, who he shares with ex-wife Whitney (who is also the mother of Maryssa, who David does have custody of). David has also garnered the nickname “Uncle Bad Touch (UBT)” as he was investigatged for molesting two children under the age of 5. The investigation was dropped due to lack of cooperation from the children’s mother.
Nathan responded to David’s allegation in an interview with Radar Online, saying “He [David] lies about me all the time. That is disgusting, there is no way that would happen. The best way to tell the truth is past behavior. We have all seen their history. Some people make changes in life, but others are self-destructive to themselves and people around them. I am handling it my own way. I never had a mental disorder. I never went to rehabilitation, no one in my family has ever been. Their claim is a defamation of character.”
Naturally, Jenelle jumped in to defend David, stating “Nathan is trying to do everything in his power to sabotage my husband. He doesn’t do anything wrong and he does everything in his power to make our family happy. David is not a bad guy.” She went on to say “Acting like a father and being a father are two separate things. Some fathers never think about their child's future. At least there is another father figure that my son loves and looks up to, whether anyone likes it or not. And that man cares about that little boy just as much.”
Fans of Teen Mom 2 spoke up immediately, saying things like “If Nathan really did this, he would have been a registered sex offender. Nice try,” “David has a great imagination,” “If this was true Jenelle would have used it one of the five times she’s gone to court with Nathan for custody,” “Jenelle, I hope you’re proud. Your children will see this one day,” “Jenelle also tried to use the same line against Keiffer,” and much more.
I cannot know 100% for sure whether or not David’s allegation are true. That being said, I do not believe that they are. If the allegation is true and people knew about it, Nathan would have been charged and had to register as a sex offender, which is not the case. Nathan also would not have been able to join the military. There is no record of this incident occurring, it has never even been alluded to in any manner before, and as a fan pointed out, Jenelle tried to say the same about Kieffer Delp when their relationship ended badly. Additionally, David’s justification (that Nathan does “gay shit”) is homophobic, awful, and entirely irrelevant.

This episode was dumb dumb dumb as fuck-and even more pointless than that. The ONLY redeeming quality in it was that it was completely Terror-free. Read on, if you dare. My recap of Season H8 Episode Dear God Why Isn’t It Over Yet-or 11, if you want to keep it short.
As usual, I’ll get the others out of the way as quickly as I possibly can.
Carl’s still illegally under-aged married, and this week he tells Kasammi, “I don’t think there’s any skin left on my dick.” Yeah, they made that point last year when they had to keep taking it off after his misguided circumcision. Not that the show is referring to THAT, of course. They refuse to acknowledge any plot point that has gone before. He and Kas take a wild tour through his before the show started past and I have no idea what the point is-is it to show us she’s truly insane because none of the horrors of life on the mean streets scare her? Or to show us that Generation Z doesn’t experience reality because their whole lives have been instantly posted on screens of electronic devices? I don’t know and I don’t care-quit trying to be fake deep, Shameless, if you even are. I can’t tell. The only (maybe) pertinent point of Carl’s story this week is he tells Kasammi after her hundredth shit fit on the subject that he won’t go back to military school and in the previews for next week it looks like the family (or at least Frank) will try to help him sneak away to do just that. Yawn.
Debbie loses three toes-Frank chops them off for her. Before that, Debbie is shown signing her 16 year old self out of the hospital-WHAT? She’d need a parent or guardian for that. Anyway, apparently Debbie’s not on any kind of welfare or insurance. And doesn’t know that Ian could’ve gotten the money for her expensive surgery to attempt to save the toes by going down on the old couple just twice. What is it with this show and cutting off toes? They’ve done this before with the body they got to stand in for Aunt Ginger. I’m so sick of the recycled plot points!
Speaking of which-Snore’s old man is out of prison so Lip gets him to fight him to violate his parole and send him back-did this new writer guy not see Yevgeny’s christening episode or is he just really into plagiarism? It was such a fizzle to a going nowhere story to begin with. I think the guy playing Snore’s version of Terry even had some of the same lines but I’m too lazy to rewatch and try to catch them. If we were supposed to hate this guy like we hate Terry, it didn’t work. And Lip was no Mickey showing up to defend people that mean something to him either-it was all a weak as fuck imitation. And it was odd that Lip chose to call the guy out for “beating women” when he lets himself get beaten when he has sex with Eddy. Who the fuck is he to judge? Maybe ten year old Snore didn’t get that her parents were having consensual rough sex that got too violent and ended in death-but the show’s not that deep.
Snore’s telling of her mother’s death once again played like someone complaining about not getting the last bottle of nail polish in their favorite shade at Walgreens or something. If she’s been so traumatized that she can’t put any emotion into the horrific memories that’s fine, but then I would argue that she wouldn’t be terrified of her dad coming after her either. Snore just can’t emote OR imagine what it would be like to be in that setting, I’m sorry.
And here’s what had me super pissed-Snore tells Lip she was 10 when her mom was killed in front of witnesses (Snore and her brother-she specifically says they both testified against him) and her dad’s already out on parole? We don’t know how old Snore is now, but surely no older than 25 (and probably not even that old, but whatever), so the show is saying her dad got out in 15 years max, which is the time Mickey was sentenced to for NOT killing Sammi? Fuck off.
Also, why would the cops not even consider the father’s side of the story that Lip instigated the fight? Lip has Eddy’s niece record the fight on his phone, and after it’s over he goes over to her and asks her how it looks or whatever, and she says Snore’s father threw the first punch. Wouldn’t the cops question why a little girl was filming two men on a porch BEFORE a fight started? Snore’s father must have Mickey’s public defender for a lawyer. Fucking show should’ve shocked us all by having Lip get locked up for premeditated assault.
Fiona meets with a lawyer (Janice from Friends, but she’s not as funny in this, sadly) and as soon as she said Fiona could lose both the apartment building and the Gallagher house I knew that storyline had jumped the shark and somehow next week all will be miraculously fixed-no way will the Gallaghers ever lose the house, that’s another plot point that’s been done to death. At first I was thinking they’ll either come up with some fortuitous traffic camera footage showing that the guy jumped off the roof intentionally, or that Hugh Laurie would show up in a cameo as Dr. House and say that if a man “fell” off a roof that high, he’d have a hell of a lot more damage than one broken ankle, but no, the show isn’t going to even get that clever-they’re just gonna have the family cave and be willing to settle with Fiona if they get custody of her dog that suddenly she’s so worried about in this week’s episode. She’s never shown that level of concern for any of her siblings.
Frank has a tedious, boring couple of scenes about his “retirement plan”-he has a baggie of 3 stolen Social Security cards and anyone can see a mile off that the cards would’ve just been replaced by their original owners-they’re not like a set of fingerprints and you only get one for life and if you lose it someone else has your entire identity. THEN they set up next week’s recycled/stolen plot to have Liam and Frank rip off Liam’s rich friend’s family just like Carl and Frank ripped off Liam and Carl’s gay foster dads-it didn’t work then, it won’t work now (and why didn’t Frank do hard time for that grand theft?).
Svetlana and Vee and Kevin have a scene at a fancy (but not as fancy as the show was trying to tell us it was) bar that was a pathetic echo of both Ian and Mickey’s hotel bar scam AND of how funny the show used to be able to be. Later Svet goes to humble herself to the other hand whore to find out how she snagged a rich fiance and discovers that the dude she’s about to marry is senile as fuck and Svet is going to step in to replace her, which is what I predicted the first time the hand whore showed up. I will give Shameless credit for making me laugh unintentionally-since I’ve been picturing the “old rich dude” Svet was going to wind up with as John Wells’ fantasy version of himself, seeing the old dude in an adult diaper and thinking he’s Wells was very satisfying.
Do I finally get to Ian now? Do I have to talk about his bullshit? There’s a scene of him in bed alone while the newlyweds are having sex in the same room, signalling that he’d rather be there than at Terror’s house, LOL. Then it’s the next morning and he goes down to breakfast with his Bible in hand, but no pills. Is that supposed to be significant? We may never know...
He gets to the “Church Of Gay Jesus” and there’s so many “fans” there it’s like Beatles or One Direction footage. The minister guy gets through the crowd to him with a big young guy and tells Ian the rando is “Bic” and he wants to help (I didn’t know the guy’s name till I saw it in the closing credits, I really thought his name was “Dick” and they were making a “big dick” joke, but no, I guess they were making a “Bic lighter” joke instead). Ian and Bic instantly have more chemistry than Ian and Terror but it’s unintentional I’m sure-the actor playing Bic probably has taken acting classes and knows to look an acting partner in the eye, instantly making him more engaged than Terror’s ever been in a scene.
The minister guy tells Ian, “Your life is no longer your own.” Which first of all, I’m just not buying that all these youths have just been waiting for a messiah to show up and they’ll follow him anywhere, and secondly why was being with Mickey not Ian anymore, but he’ll give away his entire life for strangers? Fuck you, Shameless. (and speaking of his entire life, does he never have to go to work anymore? Also, Fiona turned him down when he asked for a ride to the church-for once she had a good reason, that she had to pick up Debbie-but why is the show acting like Fi does things for him all of the sudden? She DID give him a ride last week, and that was very OOC of her.)
There’s a kid trying to get Ian’s attention-he needs help getting away from his parents who have hired men to get him back. At some point in the proceedings some guys jump out of a van and drag the kid into it. Ian runs to the front of the van before it can pull away and goes all Chris Pratt in Jurassic Park, holding up his arms and not letting it advance. The unintentional humor here amused me no end. Then Ian lays down in front of the van and I actually said aloud to my TV, “Just run him over.” I’m that done with this storyline and this show-just kill Ian off at this point, it’d be a mercy.
Ian’s there on the ground with his arms thrown up over his head (not that the driver could even see him down there, right in front of the van) and we see that this time Shameless didn’t bother covering up Cam’s real life Sailor Moon tattoo. SO LAZY. All the other kids lay down around the van too so it can’t go anywhere The 3 dudes in the van give up and let the kid get out.
The kid is 14 and the minister guy tries to talk sense into Ian, saying the parents have a legal right to their kid and they, more specifically Ian, can’t keep the kid. Ian agrees to talk to the kid’s dad who tells him the parents aren’t bigots, they don’t care that their son’s not heterosexual, but he’s been living on the streets, doing drugs, and prostituting himself. Then the father says, “We believe he may be mentally ill,” and Cameron (and yes, I mean Cameron, not Ian) makes a reaction face to that, but what it means, again, nobody knows.
Ian goes to talk to the kid where they have him hidden away in the Mickey Wedding Venue basement. Ian tells him what the father told him, and the kid says they keep bringing him to a church (is that Ian’s trigger? Churches? and if so, why?), plus they have him see shrinks who have put him on meds that knock him on his ass and he can’t get an erection. He adds, “That’s what they really want-so I can’t have sex with another boy, you know? Ever.” Ian says, “Well you can’t stay here. You have to find someplace where you can be safe, where you can be yourself.” WHAT? I don’t understand. For one thing, isn’t that LITERALLY TERROR’S JOB? To take runaways and provide them with a safe place to stay and a plan to get their lives back on terms that they can live with? I don’t ever want to have to side with Terror, but this episode is basically saying that Terror’s way is right and Ian’s way is oh so wrong and misguided. What the fuck? Secondly, isn’t that what Ian THINKS he’s doing? Why is he telling the kid HE has to find someplace safe? Ian has literally been in this kid’s shoes-he knows there’s no safe places for someone even younger than he was when he got back from the army, living on the streets. Anyway, after Ian’s lines the kid says, “Will you help me?” but Ian doesn’t answer one way or the other.
I totally didn’t get this scene-why the writer had Ian say nothing. I could see if it was to show Ian was getting more and more manic and now is on the downside of that and is becoming too depressed to speak to people-but then where’s his energy for doing anything coming from, plus the story isn’t SAYING he’s manic or depressed, and Cam and John Wells said Ian’s storyline is bold, audacious, great, etc and I don’t think either of them would’ve said those things if the payoff is just going to be that Ian needed his meds adjusted. And why does Ian maybe believe what the kid is saying and not the dad? Again, this IS Ian’s story! Mentally ill, unable to help himself, and unwilling to take his pills! I wondered why Ian didn’t at least give him a version of the Monica “you don’t have to change for them” speech, or his own “you don’t have to fix me because I’m not broken” speech or why in the name of all that’s holy didn’t he tell the kid, “I’ve been exactly where you are-on meds that were supposed to help but made me feel like crap plus I couldn’t get it up-but that’s because they take time-you need to take them to get stable and then you’ll find what works for you and have no problems having sex again (since apparently Ian’s never had an issue since beating Mickey up at the dugouts).” AND the kid’s only 14-does Ian maybe want to advise him that feeling like he needs to be having sex that young to the point where he’s willing to run away and do it with anyone might be part of his symptoms?
Ian COULD be so helpful here, but no. At this point he is literally putting at risk kids at even greater risk.
Later Rando Bic shows Ian that the van’s back behind the church. Ian says, “Get the kid,” like he’s The Penguin and Bic’s his trusty lieutenant. It was so dumb. The kid is used as bait, and when the 3 guys jump out of the van Ian pops up behind the group and starts yelling. “My god’s a faggot! My god’s a dyke! My god is trans, a junkie, a whore!’ Then the van blows up. “We will not be victims!”
What the hell is he on about? That’s a serious question. None of this is making sense. God isn’t human, so Ian giving the Christian god human attributes makes no sense. “We won’t be victims” of WHAT? Gay conversion? This kid’s dad said he isn’t trying to convert his gay son. What is all the yelling and the explosion about? And to get back to the explosion for a moment: That had to be Ian’s brilliant plan, and it just makes me miss Mickey talking him down from stupid shit like that all the more. Bic is the one that actually lights the fire (get it? BIC?) but how did they even know that all 3 guys would get out of the van this time? Based on the first failed attempt to drive off with the kid, wouldn’t it make more sense that one of the guys would stay at the wheel and keep the van running and they’d take off the minute they shoved the kid inside before all of Ian’s disciples could block it again? Before I rewatched the scene this morning I actually wondered if the story is going to be Ian is guilty of killing one of the guys, but then I saw it again and all 3 did get out-but I still don’t think Bic could’ve seen them from where he snuck around to light it up. And I bet we don’t see Bic again-he was randomly thrown in because of course Terror wouldn’t have helped Ian carry out any plan that wasn’t his own. But it’s funny that they couldn’t have him in the episode because everyone, even the shitty writers, know there’s no way Terror could talk Ian out of it like Mickey would be able to.
In the scenes for next week, Terror shows up and asks, “Is Ian around?” and Debbie answers, “He’s not here.” Terror says, “There’s a warrant out for his arrest.” Wouldn’t the cops have gone to Ian’s house FIRST? Where would they have even found Terror to be asking about Ian since Ian doesn’t officially work for the Youth Center or the Church of Gay Jesus. More lazy writing, can’t wait for the whimpering end to this crapfest of a season.

Episode 03 – Dorado Falls
Hey y’all!
So this episode’s name is too vague for me to make speculations about what might happen ... hoping for something witty and awesome.
Let’s see what happens.

“Hey, good morning.”
Okay, now I want Prentiss as my BFF. Seriously. Free coffee in the morning before work? Perfection.
“Oh, look at you spoiling me. Thank you.”
“Where’s yours?”
“Oh, I quit caffeine. Trying to relax more.”
“Well, don’t relax too much. You got ten hours of takedown and arrest procedure training to rectify.”
“Since when?”
“Since the hearing.”

“Prentiss, you’ve been away.”
“Oh, yeah. I guess I can’t complain.”
“Well, especially not to your trainer.”
“Oh! You’re doing it?”

Oh my goodness, Prentiss’s look of excitement and then confusion is killing me.
Though I’m totally with her on that one. Why is Derek so excited on putting her through the wringer?
“Workplace massacre this morning at Synalock Incorporated. That’s in Charlottesville, which his practically in our backyard.”
“That’s a high body count.”
“Yeah, eight victims in total. All employees, including the CEO.”
Damn.
”Five shot, three were stabbed to death.”
“A gun and a knife. That’s highly unusual.”
“It could be two killers.”
“That would be the first time for a workplace killing.”
“Their business in Internet security for corporations. They didn’t have video surveillance?”
“They just moved into a new building. They didn’t have time to set up their system yet.”
“How is it no one saw anything?”
“The killer was prepared. Highly organized. This was premeditated.”
“He kept his emotions contained.”
“Pretty hard to do for the typical workplace killer who’s mentally ill or outraged about some perceived injustice.”
“The high body count indicates a hell of a lot of rage.”
“One employee, John Owen, was MIA. Local PD haven’t been able to locate him yet.”

“Any unhappy clients?”
“Or a domestic situation among the employees?”
“Don’t know, but your friendly neighborhood genius girl will find out.”
“Bottom line is a mass killing is a classic show of force. It’s a way to become known. Which is why suicide, often by cop, is usually part of the plan.”
“So where’s the unsub?”
“He has a reason to stay hidden. He’s not finished yet.”

“You said the CEO’s office was ransacked.”

“The position of the body suggests he was one of the last ones killed.”
“He tried to escape and almost made it to the exit.”
“Jane Burney and Vinia Dev were here. Jane tried to run, Vinia didn’t.”
How does he know that? Because he’s the most genius genius to ever genius my genius.

And, you know, maybe he’s good at his job ... maybe.
“She’s half under her desk, which means she tried to hide and the unsub found her.”
“So these three were stabbed and the rest were shot to death.”
“Yes, but the bloody footprints all seem to come from the same pair of shoes.”
“Given the evidence, if there were a second killer, he’d be hard-pressed to get away without leaving tracks.”
“If there was only one unsub, he used his gun first, emptied his magazine, didn’t have a replacement, and resorted to using his knife.”
“He’d have to be physically fit or at least intimidating enough to subdue so many people.”
“If this were highly premeditated, he would have brought enough ammunition to kill everyone.”
“Unless he had a single target.”
“He killed the rest of them because they were witnesses.”
“We need to figure out who his first victim was.”
“These are contracts Synalock had. What was the unsub looking for?”
“Maybe he was a client searching for his own contract to hide any connection to Synalock after the murders.”
“Ah, everything’s digital these days, though. The hard copy’s just a backup.”

“So the unsub’s looking for an object, an old record, something not on a computer.”
“Huh. Rossi, check this out.”
“So, uh, Werner was worried enough about his safety to be armed.”
“And he didn’t have time to go for his gun or didn’t perceive the threat to be immediate.”
“Or keeping a gun around was out of force of habit.”
“He was a veteran.”
“A naval officer by the looks of it.”
“A decorated one at that.”
“He was awarded the Navy Cross in 2000.”
“Something else used to be here.”
“Another picture frame.”
Ruh-roh.
“Blood splatter overlay patterns indicate victim number three was over here.”
“Victim number two right here.”
“And finally victim number one right here.”
“Adam Werner was killed first?”
“Looks that way.”
“Which means the unsub made it all the way in here without alarming anyone.”
“He wasn’t threatening.”
“That’s why Werner didn’t pull the gun we found in his office.”
“He could have been the missing employee.”
“He may have taken that photo form his office if he was in it.”
“Why would an employee be interested in Synalock’s contracts?”
“Maybe this is about one client.”
“He could be after specific company information.”
“He had another motive besides killing.”
“It was clean and fast.”
“He sliced through the left carotid and abdominal aorta, major arteries that would bleed out quickly.”
“They all took two .45s to the chest, except for Adam Warner. He took four body shots and one to the head, execution style.”
“Definite overkill.”
“Somebody was angry with the boss.”
“Somebody with hunting skills.”
“Or a law enforcement background?”
“Talk to me, little genie.”
“Well, since you know how to rub my lamp, your wish is my command.”
Facepalming, grinning and giggling all at the same time here.
“I checked the Synalock client list, and the Defence Intelligence Agency is new to them, so there really isn’t anything to report, and everyone else is crazy happy with their service.”
“No complaints logged in?”
“Zero. I’m talking every high-tech blog, every chat room, glowing accolades. No one had anything contrary to say about Synalock.”
“Any employees have a history of domestic disturbances or stalkers?”
“Not that I’d violate privacy laws to check, she says, but the answer is no.”
“So Synalock is clean.”
“As a whistle.”
“Which reminds me …”
“You know how to whistle, don’t you?”
“You just put your lips together and blow.’
Oh my goodness, I love this ridiculous goddess and hunky chocolate adonis so freaking much.
“I love it when you talk old movies. Later, baby girl.”
“With all the overkill on Werner, there’s got to be a personal connection.”
“We’ve located John Owen, the missing employee. He’s been at a Doctor Who convention in San Diego since Saturday. It was a scheduled vacation.”
“Lucky guy.”
“I’ll say. That’s supposed to be an awesome convention.”
Dead here. Because I know I will never find a man as perfect as Spencer in real life.
“So if it wasn’t someone connected to the workplace, who is it?”
“You know, given the precision of the kills, it could be someone with a military background.”
“Or a professional hired by a business competitor.”
“A hit man would just kill Werner. Killing the entire office seems unprofessional.”
“Werner was a Navy veteran. He had DIA contracts. He had close ties to the military. It could be someone from his past harboring an old grudge.”
“Trooper, issue a Be on The Lookout to law enforcement for a physically fit male in his 30s to 40s, possibly a veteran. He appears nonthreatening and blends in easily. He’s armed and extremely dangerous. He most likely will kill again, either himself or others, very soon.”
You know, as serious as this is, the whole “Luke, I’m your father” thing is just too much for me and I cannot control my giggles.
“Are we sure the unsub is their son?”
“Luke Dolan called Synalock early this morning. Garcia confirmed it.”
“Know many 60-year-olds with a boombox?”
Not anymore. Which is sad.
“Trying to mask the sound of gunshots?”
“Could be. Or he was torturing them with sound.”
That metal music was definitely torture, bro.
“Why were they bound and gagged in the closet? Why not just kill them right away?”
“Maybe he was trying to get information from them.”
“About what?”
“Go ahead, Garcia, you’re on speaker.”
“Okay, Luke Dolan was in the same Navy unit as our CEO Adam Werner. That would be the 212th. They were both communication clerks at Camp Patriot in Kuwait. I’m sending all this information to your emails now.”
“Any other family?”
“He has a wife, Jenna. They’ve been separated for years. She lives in Bethesda with her eight-year-old daughter.”
“We need to bring her in for protective custody and to interview her. Send local PD and have our nearest unit meet them.”
“Done and done.”
Duh.
“Okay, it looks like he served thirteen years, honorable discharge in 2005. And now a VP of a biotech company. He was never a Synalock employee.”
“So what happened to this guy?”
“He was separated from his wife about a year ago, but that’s a bit far back to be a trigger.”
“Well, he’s on a rampage of some kind. What if mentally he was reliving a combat situation?”
“It could be post-traumatic stress. Everybody could look like an enemy.”
“Prentiss, this was a close-knit family.”
“Look at them.”
“They couldn’t have been more proud of their son.”
“How bad would his disorder have to be to make him kill his own parents?”
“Post-traumatic stress disorder rarely turns people into killers, but soldiers with PTSD have been known to strangle their wives in bed while having flashbacks or nightmares, believing they’re on the battlefield.”
“In 2005, an Iraqi war vet assaulted two people in Las Vegas, believing them to be enemy combatants.”
“So Dolan’s having a sustained flashback.”
“Pathological disassociation is one of the markers of complex PTSD, although Dolan has been stateside for six years. An escalation of the symptoms is possible, but it would be rare for them to appear out of nowhere.”
“Well, he seems to have made a successful transition to civilian life.”
“Well, at least on paper it does.”
“We should find out if he’s had any symptoms since he left the navy. It could have been the catalyst for the separation.”
“I’ll have Garcia check his records.”
“Hotch, Dolan’s been going through this.”
“Look, old mementos and journals from his days in the service.”
“He didn’t come here just to kill his parents. He came to get something.”
“He’s on some sort of mission.”
“The car’s washed, spotless inside, there’s no paint separation or rust.”
“This accident was recent.”
“I agree.”
“The Navy’s in his blood. he would never let that go without getting it fixed immediately.”
“It might have triggered his condition.”
“I’ll have Garcia run the plates, check for any recent accidents.”
“So, Dolan left his sedan and didn’t take the parents’ car.”
“He was smart enough to know it’d be tracked.”
“He’s either on foot or he’s stolen another vehicle.”
“If he’s capable of doing this, he’s rational and clear-headed enough to evade his perceived enemies.”
“So despite any mental incapacity, he’s still performing at a high level.”
“Just got word the local PD’s at the wife and daughter’s house.”
“Dolan’s unpredictable when he’s on a rampage. We need to go wide. We need to get the profile to the press.”
“Luke Dolan is a Navy veteran we believe is suffering from PTSD.”
“A recent trauma may have triggered this. He is experiencing pathological disassociation and may believe he’s in a combat situation.”
“What this means is, to him, everyone is a potential enemy. Do not underestimate him. Despite his mental state, he has extreme survival skills.”
“Right now, we believe he’s within a 250-mile radius of Roanoke. He is armed and extremely dangerous.”
“It is important that you do not approach him. He believes that he is on a mission, and if threatened, he will kill. So if you see him, stay away and notify the authorities.”
I’ll tell you whatever you want, gorgeous.
“One thing’s been bothering me is the first victim, Adam Warner, was given the Navy Cross in 2000.”
“We weren’t at war.”
“Exactly.”
“You have to show extreme sacrifice, risk life and limb to win the second-highest medal of valor.”
“So what did he do during peacetime to deserve it?”
“So, Garcia’s discovered part of Dolan’s military records were encrypted.”
“I just got the complete file to the Pentagon. He wasn’t a clerk. He was a Navy Seal.”
“Let me guess. Adam Werner was, too.”
“Yeah. Werner was the seal team leader, Dolan was his number two. Their unit was part of JSOC. They were involved in twenty highly classified missions.”
“Which missions were in 2000?”
“Uh, only one. Operation Dorado Falls.”
“See what you can find about it.”
“Will do.”
Good.
“That changes the profile.”
“Definitely.”
“How so?”
“Navy Seals are screened carefully for vulnerability to PTSD. They’re resistant to it.”
“So why would a trained Navy Seal kill his commanding officer and his own parents?”
“I don’t know, but it’s gonna be a lot harder to find him. Very few people on this planet are capable of stopping him.”
“Luke Dolan just evaded a roadblock near his wife’s house. They searched the surrounding area. There’s no sign of him.”
Well, this just turned from crap tp shit.
“Did you notice any recent changes in Luke’s behavior?”
“Did he ever mention Dorado Falls?”
“A mission he was on.”
“Is that why you two separated?”
“You weren’t a priority to him?”
“He had an exit strategy.”
Oh that poor woman. Her husband had an exit strategy from life and she took it personally.
“Okay, so it turns out 6:20 Friday night, Dolan got in a car accident in Bethesda.”
“That must have been after he dropped off his daughter.”
“He suffered minor injuries, he refused medical treatment.”
“Well, his wife said he was fine when he left her.”
“What was his mental state after the accident?”
“Normal. Field sobriety test came up negative.”
“That wouldn’t rule out drug use.”
Well, crap.
“I’d consider schizophrenia, except he’s the wrong age for the first psychotic break. It could be an aneurysm or a brain tumor.”
“Well, one thing’s for sure. He’s having a mental breakdown, but what are the specific features of it?”
“He’s not living in a past time and place, he’s living in the present, with the capacity and intelligence to evade law enforcement.”
Wow, that woman is rattled. Though any sane woman would if her husband was forced out of their house at gunpoint and she was left wondering what the fuck is going on.
“Mrs. Milgram …”
“Ma’am, listen to me. The FBI is in charge of looking for your husband, but I need you to try to remember what Luke Dolan said.”
“Yes, you can.”
“Just close your eyes.”
“Ma’am, I believe that you can.”
“Just listen to the sound of my voice and you’ll be fine.”
“Just try.”
“Close your eyes. There you go.”
“Just relax and breathe. Very good.”
“Now, what were you doing before he broke into your house?”
“Does he think your husband did something to them?”
“Does he mention Dorado Falls?”
Yup.
“All of the Milgrams’ cars are still here, so he must have taken the General in whatever vehicle he came in.”
“He talked about gaslighting. He thinks someone’s trying to purposely distort his reality.”
“He said his parents had been replaced.”
“He sounds delusional.”
“You know, he might have Capgras syndrome.”

“Dolan kidnapped the General and didn’t kill his wife because he had never met them before.”

“Our primary goal right now is the safe recovery of the General.”
“We could. But your help would speed things up.”

“You don’t and it goes south, well, the weather’s not too bad outside the beltway.”
“You know why Dolan’s so worried about this mission?”
“Were there complications?”

“We think his car accident triggered a delusional disorder.”
“We need to know who Luke was close to.”
“Is this Lieutenant Luke Dolan?”
“Sergeant Major David Rossi, United States Marine Corps, retired.”
“I volunteered to call you.”
“I knew your dad, Luke. We were in boot camp together at Parris Island.”

“Still triangulating a location. Hold on.”
“Now, we can talk, but first I need to know that General Milgram is safe.”

“This was all part of his plan to find out who was holding his wife and daughter.”

“He saw the number I called from. He recognized the FBI prefix.”
“So, what, he’s on his way here to Quantico?”
“I know the head space he’s in. he feels alone right now. There’s no risk he won’t take.”
“As a Navy Seal, he did training here. He knows this place.”
Seal everything.
“An FBI police officer was just found shot to death in the academy parking structure.”
“He’s already here.”
Shit.
“Dolan’s photo’s already been sent on all internal servers.”
“He’s probably changed his appearance already.”
“And he’s got thirteen floors to hide on.”
Fuck.
“We should make a general PA announcement.”

“No. He believes he’s on a rescue mission that he can pull off. As long as he thinks that, he’ll stay calm.”
“I’ve got hundreds of employees in here and you want me to do nothing?”

“Garcia, I need you on the building’s operations computer.”
“Ready and able, sir.”
“Dolan’s got a police radio. I want all alerts sent through ha secure tactical channel.”
“We can’t take that risk. You’ll be safe in here.”

“He knows how to be invisible.”
“I got him. He used the dead officer’s ID to enter the seventh floor.”
“Seal if off. Nobody in or out.”

“Navy Seals never start a mission without an exfiltration plan. Check the exterior and elevator shafts for riggings.’
“Turning exterior cameras now.”
“A member of the seal team said Dolan’s an expert in explosives, disabling and building them.”
“Also be on the lookout for explosives.”

“Yes. I was hoping you’d call, Luke.”
“Where are you?”

“Morgan, I cannot imagine what you went through.”

“How can I make it up to you? I will do whatever it takes.”
“Just give me ten hours of training.”

“Shooting range on Sundays.”

“And my morning coffee and a neck rub every day.”
“Oh, buddy, you are really pushing it.”

Whew. So aside from the craziness of this entire episode, because - hot damn! - this episode was so cute! Morgan dealing with his mixed feelings about Prentiss coming back and being worried he might lose her again, it’s just the most adorable subplot there is.
Also, I just found out that Reid likes to go to Doctor Who conventions, and it just made my day.
Also, I love how they address PTSD and general trauma-coping in military veterans. It’s seriously refreshing how they keep addressing all issues in human psyche around the vast country of the USA. Amazing.
And so, on this ... positive? ... note, I thank you all for keeping on following this stuff.

In Defense of Earendil - Meta
Okay, so I’ve written this rant in response to some things I’ve seen concerning Earendil, and considering I play an Earendil I can’t exactly leave it unspoken. It’s long as fuck, so please know that before you click the read more, but as a long story short I will say this:
Earendil is a complex character who should not be so simply looked at. He’s not a villain, and the fact that everyone seems to have little compassion or consideration for him as a character should be thought over twice. Now to each his own, but do not expect me to sway on this without a well thought out explanation from any haters. Don’t bother if you haven’t looked at Earendil from his point of view.
Before we begin, I would like to say a few words concerning Earendil. I know the fandom is split between two factions: Those who believe that the Feanorians were wrong to adopt Elrond & Elros, and those who believe that Earendil was a shit father to begin with and have no respect for him whatsoever. Both of these, I might add, are completely and totally biased, and are far too one dimensional for me to give any credence to. While I will not disagree that Earendil could have done better, I would like to point out a few things in both arguments that are amiss.
Namely:
Think out side the box
Now, let's start with facts and counterpoint that second statement of Earendil being a shit father.
Earendil's Heritage.
This is a factor that gets so often overlooked when those who have this argument look at Earendil. For starters, he is of the house of Finwe. The house of Finwe was --clearly-- a house of those who were incredibly familycentric. More specifically, the house of Fingolfin is from where he hails, and just by the interactions of all the rest of the family with each other it's clear that no matter what family always came first. Always. That being said, Earendil was raised by Idril, daughter of Turgon, and frankly I doubt Idril would have raised her son to be the prick so many seem to think. Here's further proof of the family itself: Fingon.
Fingon, who when everyone was angry with the Feanorians and wanted nothing to do with them went into enemy territory to save his cousin. Fingon, who was so greatly loved, who had his own faults, but it's clear he was admired etc. You see where I'm going with this? Shall I list all of Earendil's family who by proxy would have affected him with the stories of them, who show the very grain of how Finweians think of family? No? I'll go on then.
Secondly, the house of the Edain-- fucks sake, just look at every single person from these houses from Turin to Haleth --there is a line of loyalty and family honor which is so deeply ingrained in these houses there's no way that Tuor didn't put that same family value in his son in any way, shape, or form.
Proof of this in Earendil himself? Mom and dad sail off, and Earendil builds a ship to find them because it's his parents, and for whatever reason he's trying to get them back. Now this has a drawback: frankly he married a woman who was nowhere near his equal in family ties, probably because her own family was slaughtered when she was a small child. Now Earendil had his faults, I'll give anyone that, spending so much time away from growing children is something that can harm them. HOWEVER, let us consider things from his point of view.
He marries Elwing, he has a wife, his parents sail to the west and NO FURTHER WORD IS HEARD FROM THEM. His family and therefore his upbringing would demand that he has answers, that he makes sure everything is alright, etc, etc. Now, he has kids, kids who he worries about and doesn't abandon, he leaves them with his wife. I repeat: he didn't abandon them. It would be against his very grain. His very upbringing. He left his children with someone he loved and trusted, with someone who he believed would do what was best, and I'm sure he visited in between months at sea.
My own father was in the navy when I was very young, and he was gone for almost a year at a time, I won't lie and say it didn't affect me --it did-- but that didn't mean he was a bad father. There's plenty of people who can say the same I'm sure, who were raised with men who weren't around much. Men who didn't have a choice. But that doesn't mean the father's don't love them, and in turn just because Earendil would sail away and come back, and sail away doesn't mean he didn't love Elrond and Elros. Furthermore, he left Elwing with them, which for all intents and purposes is something that every single military man does with his family. And yet no one blames them.
Here's another aspect that should go into his character and should be understood. Think for a few seconds one specific character that is mentioned by name that Earendil looked up to and loved.
Ecthelion.
Now we don't know much about Ecthelion, but in general it's clear what sort of elf he was. He was the type of elf that was looked up to greatly, the type of elf who was willing to lay down his life for the lives of everyone around him. The type of elf who stood in front of a balrog and died so that others could live.
But moving on.
The Opinion of Others on Earendil
Now this is something which should be noted for all those who condemn him: when Tolkien created Earendil as the first part of his legendarium. Earendil's mythology was his first written part, and thereby sets the tone for the entire mythology. Entire. Mythology.
Earendil is clearly in high regard in Middle Earth, from Galadriel to the Valar themselves. The Phial of Galadriel is made from the light of the Silmaril which Earendil carried through the sky, he was known as Gil-Estel ...the star of hope. Now tell me this: if Earendil was the ass that he is seen as, just why would anyone give him such high honors? Furthermore, why would Tolkien who clearly knows what a son of a bitch is like (i.e., look at Eol please), make Earendil such a centerpiece of his writing if he was as horrible as people seem to think him?
'The light of Earendil, our most beloved star'
Either Galadriel is supporting a man who was atrocious to his own kids, calls him 'our most beloved star' in complete lies, or he wasn't atrocious to his own kids. Just Saying.
Earendils fate
This is something that boggles my mind so seriously. If Earendil gains anything, it is my compassion. Now to do this, I'm going to need you to open your mind just a fraction and look at things from Earendils perspective. Now, some might say this is conjecture, but I'm looking at the personality of Earendil as given in canon, plus some logic.
Earendil's parents leave, they sail west, and no word of them ever returns. So, he sets out to find them, which is completely reasonable given the ban on the Noldori to return to Aman. He builds a ship, and he sails off, scouring the sea as best as he can in hopes that either he'll find his parents, or if he doesn't at least he'll find some word of what might have happened to them. He leaves his wife and children for months at a time, though comes back because he loves and misses them (because he would, people), though he's driven to have this one last loose thread closed.
He sails off one time, and he is completely cut off from the mainland, and the next thing he knows a swan lands on his ship, and the next morning this swan turns into his wife. Naturally he asks what happened, and naturally she answers him with her side of the tale of what happened in Sirion. Given his drive over his parents disappearance, I doubt he'd take a "oh I left when the feanorians (who were provoked by Elwing, don't forget) were going to kill me"
"What happened to our sons?" he probably asks, as would be normal. And here is where it's questionable just what the answer was, but based on his reaction I think we can probably guess that somehow he got an idea that their sons were no longer alive for him to rescue. Why do I say this? because he immediately sets sail for Valinor, not caring for the ban, and intending to plead to the Valar to intervene because this is getting out of hand.
Is this the reaction of a father who doesn't give a shit about his kids and abandoned them? No. this is the reaction of a father who is so grieved by what he probably believes is the death of his kids, that it gives him a mission, it gives him a purpose beyond his parents, and whether or not he'll succeed he's gonna die trying. He sails west, and he begs the Valar to intervene, and they do.
Things happen, yadda yadda, war of wrath etc. The Valar then give Earendil a choice: immortality or mortality. Earendil wanted mortality, which would mean he'd be sent back to middle earth. Elwing wished for immortality, and due to his love of her he chose immortality himself.
And here is where I wonder how the fuck nobody has any compassion for him.
What happened to Earendil? Was his ending a happily ever after? Hell. No. Earendil was given a fate that in many ways sucks. Think about it. His immortal life is spent alone, sailing the sky with the silmaril which he's given custody over, he gets to look down on everything that happens, and who knows how he responded when when he first found out his kids were alive. He gives hope to others, but has anyone ever considered what it must be like for him? He sails the skies, a hero to so many-- but to quote The Song of Achilles 'give me one hero who was happy'.
Then consider thousands of years pass, his one son is forever parted from him because he chose mortality, his other son eventually sails to Valinor, imagine all that time that they had lost that now must be caught up on. Like he should incite your compassion, people, not your contempt.
The Feanorians
Something that frustrates me is the idea that to support Earendil must mean that one cannot like Maedhros and Maglor for what they did. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I adore what the Feanorians did for Elrond and Elros, the adopting of the twins when I read it actually helped me to fall in love with them so much. It was beautiful how admidst this blood and terror there was a moment that they took, and they did some good. The fact that Elrond is the way he is in later installments because of them is beautiful.
In addition, the Feanorians had the same family oriented thinking that Earendil might have had people. Just something of note.
But to villainize either the Feanorians OR Earendil as if to say one had to be wrong because the other was right is absolutely absurd. Tolkien didn't do it, so why does anyone else? There's a complex situation here, people, there's a situation that should be thought of from all sides. Earendil is no villain. The Feanorians are not villains. They all played their parts, and when their part was over it was passed to someone else.
Conclusion:
Do not look at Earendil so simple minded, or we will have issues. He is as complex of a character as any other character in Silmarillion, and should be treated with the same respect anyone might give Sauron, or Finwe, or Feanor, or Fingolfin etc. etc. etc.
Therefore, think. Just think. Take yourself out of your shoes and put yourself in his for a moment. If you can't do that, then I'm sorry, I don't know what else to say to you. Hate is an immature response, and born from not taking in enough facts. That’s all I have to say on it.

Writing Challenge 11: Booklet
Previous Day -- Original Post -- Next Day
“You know you don’t need to keep your face in that tourist info thing the whole time, right?” Daeglan called from where he was walking a few steps ahead. “You’ll run into something at this rate. Or someone.”
Robert looked up from his reading and adjusted his glasses to get a better look at the other man. “I’m well versed in reading and walking, thank you.”
“He used to do it a lot when we were kids,” Matilda chimed in. She was currently holding Dae’s hand as they walked side by side.
“What, that’s changed since then?” Daeglan asked sarcastically. They both laughed while Robert rolled his eyes.
It was the first vacation that the Sophos family had been on together in a very long time. It was also the first to include Daeglan Faires and his son Jerran. Robert had brought up the idea of going to the historical city of Capital during his summer break, but Matilda had argued that all three siblings go. It had taken considerably more convincing for her to get her older brother to agree to bring Daeglan and Jerran along. He’d finally agreed when she had mentioned that their younger brother needed someone to play with while the adults were busy looking at the ruins and artifacts that the city housed. The fact that Matilda was currently dating Daeglan was just a side benefit. Or so Robert had been assured.
Right now, he was getting a little tired of being witness to the two of them being a couple. All the more reason to keep his face in a booklet for the whole trip, in his opinion.
7-year-old Caleb and 5-year-old Jerran, who had both been preoccupied with the display in a shop window, sprinted ahead to chase after the pigeons that plagued the city. Matilda let go of Daeglan’s hand to go after them. As he watched her leave, Robert couldn’t help but notice where the other man’s eyes were going. It reminded him all too well of the LAST man to look at his sister that way, and what had resulted from it. The booklet wasn’t very large, but he managed to close it with a loud enough thump to get Daeglan’s attention.
“I’ve been meaning to speak to you for a while now, Daeglan,” Robert began, adjusting his glasses as he spoke. There was a smudge on one of the lenses, much to his annoyance. “About your relationship with my sister.”
Daeglan’s face went from confused to cautious in an instant. “What about it?” His tone was defensive, and he drew himself to his full height. When faced against such a physically stronger, severely scarred, and larger man, any other person might have been scared for their life. Instead, Robert chose to take his glasses case out of a pocket and use the cloth inside to wipe the lenses clean. It was best to avoid eye contact for the moment, anyway.
“Are you aware that she had been in a serious relationship before you both started dating?” Robert could feel Daeglan’s bright blue eyes bore into the side of his head. “There is a point that I would like to get to with this, I’d appreciate it if you would humor me for a moment.” He held the silver frames close to his face and squinted at the glass. The lens was still smudged. He tried to clean it again.
Daeglan was quiet for a moment before he answered. “She didn’t give me a lot of solid details, but it’s clear that he wasn’t good for her.” Near sighted as Robert was, he still could tell that he was no longer being watched by the other man. A brief glimpse through his glasses focused the shape of Faires’ face and showed it to be gazing into the middle distance. “It’s--we’re--” He sighed. “There’s times when she’ll make a mistake. Something really small, usually. And Mat’ll just, apologize for it over and over again like she’s expecting something bad to happen to her if she doesn’t. It’s only been recently that she’s let me show more than just a little bit of affection in public. Apparently the other guy--I don’t remember his name and honestly I don’t want to--didn’t like it? And she just kinda took it to heart? It’s just, really upsetting to think about.”
Robert, having finally managed to remove the smudge, returned his glasses to where they belonged on his face. When they were settled, he gave a curt nod. “Without going into specifics, you’re right on all accounts.” He absently tapped the cover of the booklet while glancing up at Daeglan. “So you can understand my concern when Matilda insisted on bringing you with us on our vacation.
“He--and I shall similarly not name him--had been a frequent guest of ours when we went on trips with our parents. After our father died and our mother...” Robert had to pause and turn away, as he always did went talking about his mother, but he continued, “Became unfit to raise our brother, he left as soon as Matilda had gained legal custody of Caleb. She’s done a fine job of raising him, but the emotional toll on her was quite heavy. Her burden seems to have greatly lightened since she met you.” Robert directed his dark blue gaze onto Daeglan’s bright blue one. “If my sister returns to the place where she was before she met you, there will be consequences.”
Slowly, realization took over Daeglan’s face. “Wait, is this your version of the ‘if you break her heart, i’ll break you’ conversation? Really?” A smile played at his lips. “I honestly didn’t know you had it in you, Rob.”
Ignoring the nickname, Robert crossed his arms. “I wasn’t talking about my own ability to harm you should Matilda come to harm, though I would do everything in my power to make certain you’d suffer.” Daeglan looked like he was about to laugh. Robert didn’t blame him. After all, what was a history professor to do against an ex-military man? “I was talking about how devastated she would be should she be betrayed in that way again.”
The laughter vanished from the taller man’s face and was replaced with sheer panic. “I can’t--I wouldn’t--I swear I would NEVER--She means too much to me for me to--” Robert raised up a hand to stop the babbling. He started smiling, despite himself.
“This response is one of many reasons why I’ve decided to trust you. You’ve shown nothing but kindness and caring for Matilda. I might have been annoyed by the displays of affection you both have given each other, but they have all been real.” His smile grew a little wider. “It’s clear that you love her enough that you would rather die than see her truly upset. I say this having been called ‘the most love blind idiot in the known universe’ by a colleague.”
Daeglan, who had been in a state of bewilderment, snorted. “They were right if you only just NOW noticed that.”
“I can safely assure you that I noticed before this moment.” Robert glanced up the street, where Matilda was leading the energetic boys back down the path by their hands. “If it helps matters, I do wish to spend more time getting to know you, Daeglan. Part of my hesitance in doing so did indeed come from previous experience, you understand.”

Trail Blazers’ Kanter, former teammate Turkoglu spar again about Turkey’s government
The volatile, longstanding dispute between Portland Trail Blazers center Enes Kanter and Turkish government officials has added another chapter, this time in separate interviews conducted by E:60’s Jeremy Schaap, with Kanter again comparing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to a dictator, and former NBA player Hedo Turkoglu, now a Turkish government official, accusing Kanter of abandoning his homeland to support a "terrorist."
The on-camera interview with Turkoglu — now a chief adviser to Erdogan — is the first with American media about Kanter. Turkoglu, who played with several NBA teams, including the Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs, played with Kanter on the 2011 Turkish national team. He is also head of the Turkish Basketball Federation. The interviews aired Sunday morning.
Turkoglu spoke carefully and deliberately to Schaap, saying that Kanter has been "openly supporting a terrorist leader" — Fethullah Gulen. Gulen is a U.S.-based Turkish cleric who has been living in exile from Turkey since 1999; he is Kanter’s spiritual adviser and a bitter rival of Erdogan’s. The Turkish government has accused Gulen of masterminding a failed military coup in the country in 2016. Gulen has denied the allegation, and the U.S. government has rejected Turkey’s requests to extradite him from his home in Pennsylvania.

In the 32-minute E:60 interview, Turkoglu only referenced Kanter by name once and said he had nothing to say to his former teammate: "I don’t send messages to terrorist organization supporters." In response to a question about how Americans should view the saga between Kanter and Turkish government officials, Turkoglu said: "All I have to say to all my American fellows, be careful."
Erdogan and Gulen were once political allies, but after a 2013 corruption scandal reached all the way to Erdogan and his family, Erdogan blamed Gulen for having a role in exposing the scandal, and their relationship fractured. Kanter has been an outspoken critic of the Turkish government and Erdogan since.
Kanter, who has played for the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder and New York Knicks, frequently has been quoted saying Erdogan is the "Hitler of our century." In December 2017, Turkey’s state-run news agency, Anadolu Agency, reported that Kanter faces more than four years in prison for insulting Erdogan and Turkoglu in a series of tweets posted in 2016. In May 2017, Kanter’s Turkish passport was canceled while traveling overseas. He ultimately was able to return to the United States through London. A few weeks later, Kanter’s parents’ home was raided, and his father, Mehmet, was taken into custody and charged with being a member of a terrorist group. Enes Kanter believes the Turkish government targeted his father, a genetics professor, because of the player’s critical stance against the country’s government.
In his E:60 interview, Kanter told Schaap his public pronouncements infuriate Turkish leadership: "When I talk, or when I tweet something, or when I say anything about the government, it goes everywhere, all over the world, and they hate it. And they know there is no way they can buy me." He told Schaap that if he returned to Turkey, he’d be killed.
While he says his resolve is strong, he told Schaap that being perceived negatively in Turkey is "tough."
"I mean, Turkey is my country. You know, it’s my flag. That is where we’re raised. … My family is born there. So that’s why, like, it’s tough to see that … your country don’t want you. People say, ‘Where are you from?’ What should I say? ‘Turkey?’ No. They don’t even want me there."
After the failed coup, Kanter’s father sent a letter to a Turkish newspaper, disowning his son due to his vocal support of Gulen, saying Enes had been "hypnotized" by the Fethullah Terrorist Organization. He apologized "to the Turkish people and the president for having such a son."

Kanter told Schaap he can’t remember when he last spoke with his parents. He said he believed his father wrote the letter "so the government can leave them alone." But a few months later, his father was dismissed from his university position.
Since the failed coup in July 2016, hundreds of thousands of Turkish residents have lost their jobs and have been subjected to criminal investigations, Amnesty International’s Turkish director, Andrew Gardner, told E:60. Tens of thousands of people have been held in pretrial prison detention, including two of his Amnesty International colleagues, for what Gardner described as "absurd, baseless allegations that they were connected to terrorism. … This is something that is really being used to target people in civil society, such as journalists, activists and human rights defenders as well."
Schaap asked Turkoglu about the firings and jailings, and he responded: "My government [is] just exposing the people who has relationship with Fethullah Gulen organization."
In his interview, Turkoglu repeatedly referenced Gulen as a terrorist and Kanter’s support of him as treasonous. Turkoglu said Kanter uses his NBA stardom as a "platform for propaganda of [a] terrorist leader." He said he spoke to E:60 to raise awareness about Turkey’s view of Kanter and Gulen. "So, obviously, it’s our job sometimes to speak loudly and clearly to inform everybody about the real situation."
Gulen’s culpability in the coup attempt has been the subject of debate in documentaries and in-depth investigative reports.
Former NBA player Hedo Turkoglu, now an adviser to the president of Turkey, said the Knicks’ Enes Kanter’s reasons for not traveling to London are visa-related and the center’s fears for his life are "irrational."
Steven Cook, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, a nonpartisan think-tank, told E:60 that the Turkish government has yet to provide, to the U.S. government, concrete evidence of Gulen’s involvement in the coup attempt.
"There really is no direct evidence that Fethullah Gulen himself gave the order," Cook says. "It certainly stands to reason that Gulenist-affiliated, or followers of Gulen within the military, took part in the attempted coup. All of the evidence that has come out in trials in Turkey are suspect, because there are serious allegations that these are confessions that were made under extreme pressure. And there’s been no independent investigation in Turkey."
The U.S. government does not regard Gulen and his supporters as terrorists. But Gulen’s presence in the United States hasn’t been without controversy. There have been multiple investigations into Gulen-affiliated charter schools over financial and immigration concerns. And Cook told E:60 that the U.S. Department of Justice is "looking into this network of charter schools in the United States."
Officials in Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs met with E:60 at their headquarters in Ankara last month. After the meeting, ESPN followed up with a list of specific questions about both Kanter’s and his father’s criminal cases. Officials would not provide any court documents involving Kanter or his father, but the government did confirm there is ongoing prosecution of Kanter. No indictment has been issued; Mehmet Kanter was conditionally released in June 2017, and according to Enes Kanter, his father’s trial is scheduled for Thursday.
Turkey asked INTERPOL to issue a Red Notice, which is "a request to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending extradition," according to INTERPOL. E:60 asked INTERPOL about the request, and the press office replied that agency officials do not comment on specific cases or individuals "except in special circumstances and with the approval of the member country concerned. We would therefore advise you to contact the Turkish authorities."
Turkish government officials declined to provide information to E:60 that had been provided to INTERPOL. When asked for specific details, such as the evidence presented to INTERPOL or the crime Kanter has been accused of, Turkish officials did not provide them. But E:60 obtained Turkey’s INTERPOL request, and in it, the Turkish government accuses Kanter of helping fund Gulen’s movement, which it considers a terrorist organization. If he is apprehended and found guilty, Kanter’s sentence could be between seven and 15 years in prison.

When the temp agency called to tell me that there was a full-time custodial position open over at a 24-hour facility in San Marcos, Texas, I was both relieved and, to be honest, a little bit indignant. I was going to be able to eat this week, but after having spent the past 14 years of my life getting a bachelor’s degree in English, getting a master’s degree in creative writing, and starting my own entertainment company, I was going to be a janitor.

I must have missed the memo: A 2014 study from the Center for Economic and Policy Research revealed that an incredible 55.9 percent of black recent college graduates were “underemployed” and working in a position that didn’t require a four-year college degree. Hence my new position pushing Gaylord boxes back-and-forth in an Amazon warehouse for $10 an hour, 10 hours a day, three days a week. But thanks to this job, I was going to be able to cover my portion of the rent and buy four whole rolls of toilet tissue.
The reality is that in April of this year, I was so far behind on rent that I had to host a 12-hour poetry reading to raise money on GoFundMe. I was embarrassed. After I’d eagerly shared posts on social media about the work I’d been doing with my business, I was now admitting publicly that if I couldn’t raise the money, I would be homeless.
I had pushed for a college education, believing that with it came job security and the freedom to pursue my writing without the burden of poverty. Without familial wealth or a serendipitous set of circumstances, I would need at least a degree to be competitive if I wanted to move up and over the poverty line. But here I was teetering on it.
Amazon workers call the taped-off and safe walking paths that wrap around the building “the Green Mile.” I thought it was a joke at first, comparing the facility to a prison like the one in the movie made famous by Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan. But I had to admit that the joke was in some ways disturbingly close to the truth about the working conditions I found there. The space, which stretches out across several football fields and up four flights of stairs, does give the illusion of forced servitude. Hundreds of women and men work the line, stowing or picking products and flirting through the metal windows of their stations, checking out all the new hires and the staff personnel who strut back-and-forth, running the floor.
My roommate was hired as a “picker,” someone who pulls items purchased on Amazon.com and dumps them in a container for packaging. He also has a master’s degree in creative writing but was unable to find a job in his field after graduation. Always the funny guy, he lives for memes and regularly refers to me by my pet name, Rent. When I told him I’d be working in the warehouse with the cleanup crew, he told me that I’d work with the people who are commonly referred to as the laziest and most unnecessary in the building. “You guys just don’t do anything,” he cracked.
I picked up discarded plastic wraps, pulled Gaylords from one side of the floor to the other, emptied the 6-foot-tall boxes, and cleaned out the yellow bins the packers used ceaselessly. We cleaned toilets, wiped down rails, swept, and moved anything that would slow down the employees with “real jobs” out of the way. Every day I had the same thought: I have no idea how I got here.
I grew up in a military family, moving from state to state until my parents divorced and my mom moved us kids to Austin, Texas. I spent my high school years in at-risk programs for low-income families, living in Section 8 housing and waiting on our monthly food-stamps deposit. I promised my family, my teachers, and myself that I would find a way to be more than just another black statistic, and that an education was going to help me do that.
I had pushed for a college education, believing that with it came job security and the freedom to pursue my writing without the burden of poverty.
Today, black women are among the most-educated groups in the country. We’re the only demographic of women who own more businesses than our male peers. But of course that does not always mean we are more successful. A 2016 survey from Consumer Financesshows that degrees for black women are not translating into wealth within our communities. Too many factors outside of higher education are leaving black women jobless and in debt. Upward mobility, a common desire among millennials, is still often thwarted by discrimination in the labor market.
When I left my full-time sales job at a call center last year, several months before graduating from my master’s program, I felt invincible. I thought to myself, I’ll just finish up my master’s degree and start my own company doing what I love: writing and creating opportunities for other artists. I wanted to create a space where emerging visual and performing artists could receive professional development and education, network with local companies and potential clients, and expand their portfolios with themed exhibitions and performance opportunities.
I threw myself into a business plan, applied to art grants and startup-accelerator programs, and even joined an innovative female-owned co-working space, Splash Coworking. I created an artist-in-residence program, facilitating the artist-development initiative through a monthly event series I curated. Those first three months were a crash course in organization, self-care, branding, paperwork filing, and functioning on minimal sleep. I took all the knowledge I had gained throughout my college career and threw it into my business. But while the U.S. Census Bureau states that black-owned businesses like mine are on the rise—an estimated 34.5 percent increase from 2007–12—the rate of success overall for black-owned small businesses in their first two years is still debilitatingly low. It felt like I was losing before I even got started.
In October of 2017, the stress and calls from unpaid creditors forced me to finally give in and file for personal bankruptcy. By January, I had lost my car and cleared my nonacademic debts. I defended my thesis the same month and graduated—happy to have finally attained my life jacket of a degree.
I searched for teaching opportunities that would give me the income and flexibility needed to keep my business going. I applied for jobs in every market in my area. Teaching jobs, specifically for creative writing or English, were virtually nonexistent in my city, and the other positions required Ph.D.s and prior teaching experience. Awesome, I thought. Teaching was out of the question for now. I decided to look for acting jobs or writing jobs in the area. The closest one was in Austin, 30 miles away from me. Without a car, that didn’t seem possible.
“Oh! I see you have a degree!” the interviewer proclaimed.
“Yes, I do.” He nodded slowly.
“Oh. I see you have two degrees.” He peered up over his steamed-up glasses and briefly glanced down at my carefully constructed cleavage. I nodded. I knew that tone. I struggled to keep my face relaxed. It was important that this meeting went well. Rent. Phone. Electricity. Food.
“So, tell me why you want to be a team member here instead of writing or getting a job teaching?” I smiled. Of course I didn’t want to work at the local chicken shack. He knew that. How do I explain this?
The chairs are sticky, the air conditioner is always broken, and the same music plays 24/7 here, but at least there’s food and I don’t have to wait for a paycheck now. If the people I serve like me, they just drop a $5 bill on my table before they drive off to do whatever it is people who can afford restaurants like this do. Buy fancy teacups. I don’t know. If they don’t like me, they rip open their sugar packets and dump them on the table for me to wipe up once they’re gone. And I will wipe it up. Because I’m still hoping the next customer will like me just a little bit better and the rules say I can’t tell customers when they’re being rude.
It’s been three months since Amazon’s “need for temp employees changed,” and I’ve found a job working at a restaurant as a server for $2.13 an hour plus tips. I average anywhere from $250 to $375 a week. The uniform is stiff but the other employees at least try to keep the mood light with gossip about their children or new boyfriends.
Their conversations remind me that real people are working the jobs no one else wants to work. Real people with real bills and medical issues, real hopes and desires. I listen in and try not to think about my degree or my company too much. I’ve worked more doubles in the past few months than I ever have in my life and I’m starting to think I may have busted some important vein in my left foot hustling back-and-forth between the many, many tables of the main room. But despite everything, I’ve found that I actually like my new job. It’s simple and straightforward and I’m surrounded by windows that let me see the sun all I want.
After I got over the physical exhaustion from working at Amazon and got the hang of my new job, I started having more time to pick up my creative work again. The book of poetry I’ve been working on for over 10 years finally found a home with a publisher. I’ve started editing it in between guests and daydreaming about my next book, a memoir about giving my daughter up for adoption. I’ve even started reimagining how my small business could work in a different city when I move after my lease is up.
I’m humbled by the job. It reminds me that no one who has ever accomplished anything of significant value accomplished it easily. Some of my favorite artists were servers. If anything, I’m just following in their footsteps. They were construction workers and truck drivers; they worked at fast-food restaurants and were telemarketers. A few were even janitors. Maybe I’ve been looking at this all wrong. Maybe I’m just getting started.
