AIR QUALITY WARNING
Hey fellow Northeasterners on Turtle Island, aka the USA and Canada! Recent wildfires are spreading smoke and dangerous air conditions across New England. I only realized this because of social media, so I'm spreading the news further with maps for visuals. Things are officially UNHEALTHY so everyone needs to be careful, especially anyone with heart or lung conditions.
If you're in NY, MA, RI, CT, NJ, etc, please be careful!
Close your windows (consider sealing them if it's really bad)
Wear respirator masks (ex N95s) outside
Turn on air filters if you've got them
Use fans inside to keep cool and keep air moving
Check for air coming in around window AC units! You can probably still use your AC, but remember that their filters generally don't block smoke.
Remember, wildfire smoke doesn't just include burnt up trees but can include all kinds of hazardous materials, so the less outside air inside your house the better. If you've got any DIY Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes around for COVID-19 filtration, they excel at filtering out other dangerous particles too. Here's a diagram for making one, :
Tumblr media
Also, try to avoid strenuous activities (ex moving furniture, climbing lots of stairs, etc) and listen to your body's needs. If you need to lay down and do nothing for a while, go for it. Stay hydrated, especially if your throat is getting scratchy! If you've got asthma, make sure your meds are close by.
Take care of yourselves and each other out there!
-----------
6/7/23 UPDATE:
Tumblr media
Thought I'd add more context and sources for people to look up their own areas! The above map shows the current outbreak of wildfires across the West Coast and Midwest, versus the huge plumes of smoke traveling across the north, middle, and east of the continent, including Mexico. Click the source link to explore the map yourself.

I think I previousy posted about this but I can't find the post so let me recap.
Basically I'm going to Switzerland on exchange, to the French-speaking area. I've already lived in a country where I had complete French immersion (France itself) so when I signed up to go to Switzerland I was mainly interested in learning another language or two since my thirst of learning languages is neverending.
I previously looked into which languages I can learn at the school I'm going to and I found out that they have German as an L2, Italian as an L3, and Latin-Italian-Spanish as a joint option. Anyways my exchange partner informed that I will most likely have to choose between German and Italian (not both, and no Romansh).
So anyways this is actually a super hard choice for me because I have good reasons for both. My host parents are immigrants from Italy and I already speak French so it'd be easy, but also German is more widely spoken and I sort of have a couple family connections to said language.
But I think the choice is getting clearer because I have more opportunities to keep learning German outside of my exchange and right now, German interests me more than Italian.
I have a deadline for when I have to make the choice personally because the 15-minute Italian book I got from a gift card is a 12 week course (and I can get a German version of the same series through a gift card as well). But I'm not telling the internet when it is because I do not want the internet to know where I am at what time. So you will only find out once I'm out of there.
Anyways yeah. That's it. I need to go finish my math homework...

Spinal infection in the form of tuberculous vertebral osteomyelitis or pyogenic spondylodiscitis is a commonly associated state of an immunodeficient host from various pathologies. For example, secondary infections can be seen following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
We report three cases of different forms of spinal infections that occurred as delayed complications to recent COVID-19 infection. The first case is a 60-year-old female who was diagnosed with an epidural abscess presenting with severe back pain and bilateral lower limb weakness. The second case is an elderly male who was diagnosed with L3/L4 spondylodiscitis and presented with predominantly back pain and minimal leg symptom. The final case is a young female who was diagnosed with severe T5 tuberculous spondylitis and presented with a complete sensory and motor deficit from T5 below. All patients showed good improvement after surgery and antibiotic therapy.
Patients treated for COVID-19 are at risk of spinal infection development due to multiple pathophysiologies. Treatment of these various forms of spinal infection remains difficult, and we encourage physicians to be vigilant for the development of these complications post COVID-19 infection.
COVID-19 causes damage to the endothelium of vessels in the lung, giving rise to its pulmonary complications [1,2]. Recently, the widespread systemic involvement of the virus is gaining notice. One such problem is the spine and the neurological system. Epidural and retropharyngeal abscesses have been reported in tandem with the COVID-19 infection.
We would like to share our experience of managing three patients who developed different types of spine-related infections shortly after recovering from COVID-19 infection.
[Case 2] presented with new onset lower back pain for approximately two months. He denied any recent trauma or previous infections of the spine. He was afebrile and hemodynamically stable; however, there was instability-related spinal tenderness along the lower lumbar region. MRI revealed an abscess collection and high signal intensity of the intervertebral disc at the level of the L3/L4 and L4/L5 vertebrae. He underwent surgery for debridement of the affected spinal levels and stabilization via a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). Intraoperatively, it was noted that there was unhealthy disc material at L3/L4 and L4/L5 as well as erosion of the superior endplate of the L4 vertebral body. Intraoperative specimens grew no organisms; however, histopathological examination revealed features of chronic inflammation while ruling out malignancy.
[Case 3] MRI revealed destruction of the T5 vertebral body and posterior elements with a subligamentous collection sparing the intervertebral discs, with resultant spinal canal stenosis and nerve root impingement.
COVID-19 has been implicated in multi-system aberrations apart from its primary target of the lungs [4]. Opportunistic infections occurring secondarily after COVID-19 were reported in 27% of patients who were hospitalized in Wuhan, China [5]. Choudury et al. described exhaustion of the cellular-mediated response, which results in the reduction of the CD4 and CD8+ cells involved in initiating humoral and cytotoxic responses against viral pathogens [2]. This implies the increased susceptibility of patients with COVID-19 to be debilitated by opportunistic infections in the face of a blunted immune response. Immunomodulating drugs such as tocilizumab, which are prescribed for their off-label use to offset cytokine release storm, are in turn causing immunodeficient responses against superimposed bacterial infection.
A spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is commonly seen in a patient who has or has had an adjacent spondylodiscitis. It also can occur after and adjacent to an infected spine surgery or via a hematogenous spread.
The majority of SEAs occur in the lumbar spine, although in patients presenting after COVID-19, it has been reported in the cervical and thoracic regions, giving rise to quadriparesis and poor neurological outcomes.
The most common organism involved in opportunistic infections of the spine causing SEA is Staphylococcus aureus, MSSA as seen in our patient, followed closely by other Staphylococcus bacteria [1,2,4,5]. MRI is the diagnostic imaging of choice, which reveals a hyperintense lesion on T2-weighting encroaching into the epidural space as seen in our patients, which also encroaches and then displaces the cauda equina.
Besides SEA, spondylodiscitis is another possible common complication that can arise in the spinal structures following COVID-19 infection. Such an occurrence may pose additional morbidity and mortality, as it is a serious condition attributed to a dysbalanced immune response with immunosuppression and it can occur following COVID-19 infection. Naderi et al. reported a case of an elderly male who was diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia and eventually developed paraparesis and paraplegia due to a thoracic multilevel spondylodiscitis and epidural abscess.
In another case reported by Erok et al., a middle-aged male who was diagnosed with COVID-19 and underwent quarantine was admitted for persistent right-sided leg pain. Further investigation revealed spondylodiscitis at the lumbar spine, as well as a right-sided psoas abscess. He underwent aspiration of the abscess, which revealed no growth. Eventually, however, worsening of spinal elements was seen in serial MRIs three weeks later [8]. This highlights the importance of always suspecting secondary spinal infections in COVID-19 patients with neuromuscular symptoms.
COVID-19 infection may cause delayed-onset complications to the host with risks of secondary bacterial infection or activation of a latent TB infection in extrapulmonary sites, of which spinal elements are commonly involved. Understanding the pathophysiology of COVID-19 infection is crucial to enable treating clinicians to embark on the correct methods to identify the accurate causative factors in patients presenting with neuromuscular-related illnesses following COVID-19 infection. This may also help clinicians to actively screen for such possible complications in all patients who have contracted the virus. This may enable them to halt the progression of the disease at the initial stage, which can lead to reduced morbidity and mortality.

Why Orb is much stronger than we thought:
After binge watching another round of the Orb Saga, all I can say is that the biggest surprise here is that I didn't figure this out immediately 3 years ago
And that is the sheer difference in power between Orb's L1-L3 forms and his L4 forms
As a refresher:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And compare their stats to:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So how can we reconcile this huge disparity?
The key is this
If we remember, Orb underwent training for 10 years in the Shining Field with Zero and Seven
And the stats for his L4 forms were released only during UFO's run (post Shining Field) whilst his other forms were released during the original series' run (pre Shining Field)
No wonder why ES is so ridiculously strong for no reason comparatively speaking to say HS cause they use relatively the same components
But this leads to a rather alarming revelation
That post Shining Orb is actually ridiculously stronger than what we expected him to be based on his old released stats which are outdated by now
But by how much approximately?
Well we can go off for this based on the disparity between HS and ES' stats as both of them use relatively the same components as earlier stated
(But note this is a lowball estimate cause I'm assuming Jack is physically as strong as Seven although 'official' stats show that Jack is physically stronger)
For ease of comparison and sense of perspective I'll only be using the numbers for brute strength
So the disparity between HS' and ES' brute strength is an astounding 182 000t
Which for ease, let's just say 180 000t
So we can safely say that post Shining Field Orb is basically 180 000t stronger than pre Shining Field Orb
And so basically this is Orb's true stats in terms of just brute strength alone for his forms:
Orb Origin: 267 000t
SZ: 265 000t
BM: 280 000t
HS: 263 000t
TB: 330 000t
OT: 420 000t
(The math also applies to OT here cause his stats were released prior to UFO, that is pre Shining Field)
And note that I'm assuming a few things here:
1. Jack is physically as strong as Seven
Which Jack is actually physically stronger, but we just don't know by how much exactly
2. Orb's fusion results scale linearly with an increase in base power
Which makes sense cause only the powers of the Ultra Cards don't hold much more power than original even if Orb increases his base power
But I did not account for the possibility that Orb might gain an exponential increase in fusion result power due to his stronger base stats
3. I assumed Orb received no further upgrades from the VoL starting from his series
Which we know does not hold true as the VoL awards it's proxies with upgrades after every mission completed and we know that Orb completed:
a) The vanquishing of Maga Orochi
b) Mulnau's Invasion
c) Reibatos' Rampage
d) Gilvaris' Invasion
e) Grimude's resurrection
(I'm not including whatever went down in UGF cause we definitely know that the VoL did not give Orb any instructions relating to that whole Saga)
So that's 5 potential upgrades Orb has up his sleeves from the VoL which we have no idea of
And because of all these assumptions, this is but a lowball estimate of just how frighteningly powerful Orb is at this point
Tbh he potentially might just be able to compete with or even surpass Ginga and Victory at this point considering that they scale relatively close to the Ultra Brothers in their own debut series. But because till this day, neither of their stats were released, not to mention the whole 'host-nerfing' issue they have its still hard to say at this point
And with such a tremendous increase in base power, I won't be surprised if Orb's trinity or even his stronger duo fusion ups can now match or even surpass the weakerType 1 duo fusion combinations as well at this point
Truly befitting of arguably the biggest commemorative milestone Ultra of the franchise

20 Best Star Wars Books from Canon and Legends
https://ift.tt/38n3sgI
Want to know where to start with Star Wars books? Here are the 20 best adventures across both Legends and the new canon.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
The Expanded Universe has been a part of Star Wars for almost as long as the movies have, starting with Alan Dean Foster's novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was published in 1978 and was originally conceived as a low-budget continuation of A New Hope had the movie flopped. But Foster's Luke and Leia adventure isn't actually the first Star Wars book. Star Wars has existed longer on the page than on the big screen. Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, the official novelization of A New Hope, was published in 1976, six months before the release of the movie (a move that's hard to fathom by today's spoiler culture).
Since the release of the first two Star Wars books, the galaxy far, far away has continued to grow on the page. From the early '90s on, novels that expand the adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, and other heroes and villains have been a staple of Star Wars storytelling and have given us beloved new corners of the galaxy to obsess over. Today, these books and stories remain a great way to learn more about the worlds and characters seen in the movies.
When Disney traded the older Expanded Universe books (now known as the Legends continuity) for a new canon in 2014, it opened up a host of new possibilities. Years later, there are plenty of canon books giving us new ways to experience the Sequel Trilogy and beyond.
With The Rise of Skywalker on the way, concluding the nine-movie Skywalker Saga, it’s a good time to take a look at the book adventures that allows fans to spend more time in the galaxy far, far away. You'll find that there are plenty of books to discover outside of the movies.
Below are our picks of the best Star Wars books—from both the Legends timeline and current canon. The books are listed in alphabetical order. Here's what you should read:

Aftermath
By Chuck Wendig
Aftermath is remarkable for both Chuck Wendig’s all-in writing style and for its place in canon. The beginning of the new canon’s first book trilogy, it follows mostly original characters and a teenage Temmin "Snap" Wexley, the X-Wing pilot played by Greg Grunberg in The Force Awakens. Because it’s the first book in a series, Aftermath has room for cameos from major characters and a wide look at the state of the New Republic after the fall of the Empire.
Information from this series continues to reverberate through later stories, especially ones involving the final defeat of the Emperor's forces and their reorganization into the First Order. While it isn’t the first book to feature Imperial Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, it does establish the fan favorite’s career as a key part of the post-Galactic Civil War galaxy.

Ahsoka
By E.K. Johnston
This standalone novel lands on the list for several reasons. Most simply, Ahsoka Tano is a fan favorite both out in the world and behind the scenes. Originally appearing in The Clone Wars as Anakin Skywalker's Jedi apprentice, she returned in Star Wars Rebels and has appeared in a multitude of tie-in media.
Ahsoka by E.k. Johnston gives her a lot more interiority than the animated series. It also has a little bit for everybody: Prequel fans will see how Ahsoka feels about losing her friendship with Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Original Trilogy fans will get a look into how she began working with (but not within) the early Rebellion.

Alphabet Squadron
By Alexander Freed
Another ensemble story, Alphabet Squadron focuses around Imperial defector turned X-Wing pilot Yrica Quell. The five pilots who make up "Alphabet" are full of personality, and their often prickly getting-to-know-each-other period is facilitated by an unlikely therapist: a torture droid. IT-O the ex-Imperial droid perfectly encapsulates the books mix of ruthless war and wry humor.
This book doesn’t feel like a heroes vs. villains myth like the Original Trilogy did; instead, this is a more muted war story. Its emphasis on the uncertainty and randomness of war doesn’t stop it from also working as a vivid adventure story.

Battlefront: Twilight Company
By Alexander Freed
Even if you haven’t played the Battlefront video games, you might find something to enjoy in Twilight Company, which emphasizes the war in Star Wars. Infantry soldier Namir is used to fighting—he comes from a planet ruled by warring clans—but he sees the Rebellion as just a means to a paycheck.
Namir hovers around the edge of famous events like the Battle of Hoth. If you ever wanted an everyman perspective on the Galactic Civil War, you can get that from Namir and his crew. And along the way, he finds why the Rebellion might be something worth fighting for.

Battlefront II: Inferno Squad
By Christie Golden
While both Battlefront novels are worthwhile reads, Inferno Squad benefits more from the game’s story campaign. Iden Versio will eventually leave the Empire to join the Rebellion after the Battle of Endor, but before that, she’s Imperial through-and-through.
The main strength of this book is the characterization: Iden, Del, and the rest of her squad are endearing and entertaining characters thrown into situations ranging from a firefight to a fancy party. It’s an adventurous book driven by memorable characters — we won’t soon forget the image of the team toasting to the Empire’s health with Alderaanian wine — made all the better by knowing that Iden will eventually up seeing the error of her ways.

Bloodline
By Claudia Gray
In terms of Star Wars books, quality isn't really dictated by how closely they follow or connect to the movies. Many of the most interesting stories are entirely or mostly separate from the movies. However, Bloodline has connection as its main distinction for a few notable reasons: first, it is one of the few books that deal with the Solo family before the Sequel Trilogy and after the Original, and second, it gives Leia the clear-eyed attention which few authors give her. It also shows how the new canon deals with Leia’s relationship to Darth Vader. All of that makes for a compelling story about the political machinations of the New Republic and how they impact the Solo family, including Ben.
Buy Bloodline

Lando’s Luck
By Justina Ireland
Some of the best new canon books cater to middle grade and young adult readers. Lando’s Luck captures the titular character’s voice perfectly, and you'll find yourself laughing out loud at the dialogue between the charming rogue ad his droid co-pilot L3-37.
After being criminally underused in Solo: A Star Wars Story, it's nice to see L3 get a larger part here, as well as a more tonally even relationship with her co-pilot. She and Lando are tasked with helping a young princess return a captured treasure to her planet, a perfectly pulpy plot for Star Wars and especially this duo of adventurers.
Buy Lando's Luck
Tumblr media
Lost Stars
By Claudia Gray
Lost Stars, described as a Romeo and Juliet story in space, it could have been a dull grab at the YA romance market. Instead, it’s a detailed look at some unlikely characters—an Alderaanian who joined the Empire, the wealthy city boy who joins the Rebellion, and the honor-bound pilot who flies a TIE fighter. Protagonists Thane and Ciena are two of the most memorable characters in the new canon, and the conclusion of the novel, which is set during the Battle of Jakku, will leave you breathless.
Buy Lost Stars
Tumblr media
The Weapon of a Jedi
By Jason Fry
Another stand-out middle grade book, The Weapon of a Jedi is a tightly focused Luke Skywalker adventure that feels like it could be a missing movie or TV show. It’s a relatively simple story — Luke visits an ancient Jedi Temple, meets a friend, and fights a strange alien smuggler while exploring the temple. Hidden within that simplicity is a story that shows Luke’s development and his better understanding of the Force. His characterization as kind and earnest fits him perfectly.
Buy The Weapon of a Jedi
Tumblr media
Queen’s Shadow
By E.K. Johnston
Queen’s Shadow looks at Padmé Amidala in a new way, and is a story long overdue. We learn how Padmé and her handmaidens, written as Naboo bodyguards, wear elaborate costumes that hide military-quality defenses and enable them to do their jobs more effectively. The handmaidens are sometimes written as one swirling, ghostly being, moving around Padmé as a unit. At the same time, each character is fleshed out. Padmé herself is treated as both a heroic figure and a tragic one, her death an inevitable shadow as Palpatine’s machinations crush what was left of the Republic.
Buy Queen's Shadow
Legends
Tumblr media
The Thrawn Trilogy: Heir to the Empire
By Timothy Zahn
The Thrawn Trilogy is arguably the most formative series in the Expanded Universe. The first book, Heir to the Empire, was published in 1991 and was marketed as a continuation of the movie saga. Of all of the Legends books, it perhaps captures the feeling of watching a big-screen spectacle the most.
The book features a cinematic storyline that continues the hero trio’s adventures and establishes keystone EU plot elements like Talon Karrde’s network of smugglers and Leia and Han’s marriage. It also introduces Mara Jade, the Force-sensitive woman who used to be the Emperor’s Hand (an elite Imperial assassin) and would later become a powerful Jedi. Even though she’s now working as a smuggler, she finds herself on a collision course with Luke Skywalker, as a shadowy new Imperial commander threatens the New Republic.
Instead of standing out because it does something different with the universe, Timothy Zahn’s trilogy is essential because, for many fans, it felt just like the movies. Grand Admiral Thrawn is also one of the few Legends characters who survived the continuity reset. He not only appears as a major villain in the latter half of Star Wars Rebels but also stars in a new series of novels written by Zahn.
Buy Heir to the Empire
Tumblr media
Jedi Apprentice
By Jude Watson and Dave Wolverton
We're cheating a little here since we're recommending an entire series of 18 books here, but you should read them all! Like the X-Wing series, the Jedi Apprentice series is a classic that established the tone and format for an entire era of stories. Another similarity: the author who wrote the first book isn’t the person behind the best-known parts of the series.
Jude Watson wrote all but one of the Jedi Apprentice books, in which Obi-Wan Kenobi narrowly earns his place in the Jedi Temple, tangles with Qui-Gon’s former Padawan, and makes friends across the galaxy. It’s a look inside the life of a Jedi, and it was the starting point for many a fanfic. Young Obi-Wan is an easy-to-like, kind, and compassionate person who just wants to do his best, even if it means clashing with his master.
Buy Jedi Apprentice Book 1
Tumblr media
Kenobi
By John Jackson Miller
Another character study, Kenobi stands out for when in the timeline it's set, fleshing out the story of what happened in Obi-Wan Kenobi’s life between the fall of the Jedi and the start of their return. The book delves a bit into Obi-Wan’s mental state shortly after his flight from Order 66, but most of it concentrates on his day-to-day life and trying to solve local problems.
It’s a tightly plotted and compassionately characterized story that sometimes feels restricted, but hey, that’s what life on Tatooine is like. Best of all, the side characters feel like real, sun-burnt denizens of Tatooine, both humans and Tusken Raiders alike. A good read if you're looking forward to the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series coming to Disney+.

Republic Commando: Hard Contact
By Karen Traviss
While the Original Trilogy era books are most often cited as good places to start, fans of Jedi and clone troopers have plenty of options in the Prequel era, too. The Republic Commando series fostered a fandom as passionate as any other within the community.
Ostensibly a video game tie-in novel, it was the start of Karen Traviss’ long-term development of Mandalorian culture as followed by the clone troopers. The novel follows a team of elite clone commandos and one young Jedi Padawan as they try to stop a Separatist bio-weapon.
Buy Republic Commando: Hard Contact

Revenge of the Sith
By Matthew Stover
Star Wars novelizations haven't often set a very high bar. While some extra scenes or characters’ internal thoughts might add a little to what you watched on the big screen, these books aren’t usually a source of great prose or characterization. Therefore, it’s exceptionally remarkable that Matthew Stover saw that bar and decided to reach for orbit.
Metaphor, added scenes, and poetic, energetic prose make Revenge of the Sith an entirely different experience in book form. Anakin Skywalker’s struggles with the “dragon” of the dark side and the gradual, terrible collapse of his friendship with Obi-Wan Kenobi might be the best character-centric writing in the saga.
Buy Revenge of the Sith
Tumblr media
Scoundrels
By Timothy Zahn
Timothy Zahn’s last non-Thrawn Star Wars book is one of his best. A standalone story about Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and the titular group of scoundrels, this novel is Ocean’s Eleven in Star Wars. One of the best elements of this book is the twist ending, which of course I won’t spoil here. Scoundrels is pure fun, with lots of chemistry between the team members and memorable moments.
Buy Scoundrels
Tumblr media
Shadows of the Empire
By Steve Perry
Shadows of the Empire wasn't just a novel. The novel was one part of a tie-in extravaganza that also included a video game, a soundtrack, and more about the Original Trilogy heroes fighting Darth Vader and his criminal lackey, Prince Xizor. Shadows contains some uncomfortable scenes—Xizor’s secret weapon is that his species gives off seductive pheromones, and Leia spends a good deal of the book kidnapped—but it does fill in the gaps between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
The book is also formative because of the debut of Dash Rendar, an EU character if there ever was one. Shadows is perhaps the least essential book on this list, but if you’re new to the EU, it might help you know what exactly fans are talking about when they (jokingly or seriously) refer to “the Bantam era.”
Buy Shadows of the Empire
Tumblr media
The New Jedi Order: Traitor
By Matthew Stover
The question of whether Traitor works as a standalone novel is a complicated one. It’s part of the divisive 19-book New Jedi Order series, so there are certainly a lot of plot points that lead up to it. There are also a lot of questions posed in this book that the series can’t completely answer: Does the Force truly have a light side and a dark side? What does it really mean to be a Jedi? Traitor shows Jacen Solo’s descent into the underworld, a deep dive into the morality of the Force. Like the Revenge of the Sith novelization (written by the same author), the writing is darkly beautiful.
Buy Traitor
Tumblr media
X-Wing: Rogue Squadron
By Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allson
The X-Wing series by Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allston is another staple in Expanded Universe fandom. While the series doesn't reach its heights of humor and cheer until Allston’s books later in the series, the first book is the easiest to recommend. Fan favorite pilot Wedge Antilles has flown against the first Death Star and destroyed the second one. Now, he needs to put together a new squadron to hold the New Republic military together while they try to conquer the Imperial capital. Known for its charming characters and exciting descriptions of starfighter battles, Rogue Squadron is a classic. And if you love this one, you really should read the rest of the series!
Buy X-Wing: Rogue Squadron

Yoda: Dark Rendezvous
By Sean Stewart
Despite the format of its title, this is a standalone novel. It’s another one that asks big questions: what does it mean to be a Jedi when you aren’t very good at the Force? What philosophy is behind Count Dooku’s split from the Jedi Order and his desire to leave his friend Yoda behind? With some surprisingly Gothic influences and unconventional Jedi characters, Dark Rendezvous is an unusual book that's worth a read.

Some thoughts on the new Judge Program
Earlier today, Sara Mox, Wizards of the Coast's Community Manager for the Judge Network, announced some big changes to the Judge Program in an article called The Next Era of Magic Judging. Those upcoming changes are the biggest ever made to the Judge Program, way more than the creation of the Exemplar Program almost four years ago.
Charlotte Sable who, unlike me, is a judge and know way more about the Judge Program, made a summary of those changes in a post. To keep it short, the Judge Program will now be run by a distinct entity, called the Judge Academy. It will be in charge of the training and the certification of new judges. More importantly, to be a certified judge, you will now have to pay a yearly fee.
I think some of changes are going in the right direction. For example, I think it's a really good idea to have the judge body be a separated entity from Wizards of the Coast while still working with them. I'm also happy to learn that the new program is going to provide to people wanting to be professional judges, a way for doing so.
But overall, I think it's a terrible decision with dire consequences. Here is why:
The Judge Academy won't be a non-profit organization but a company. It means that their end goal will be to make profits, not necessarily to maintain the best Judge Program. Sure, maintaining a sane judging environment may be one of the best way to make profits, but this is still a massive red flag. And yes, Wizards of the Coast is also a company, but unlike the Judge Academy, the Judge Program was a necessity for them, not a way to make money.
The fact that it's a company will also mean that it wont operate in a democratic way. Sure, it wasn't the case before either, but, in my opinion, this is a huge opportunity to improve the way the Judge Program work that has been wasted. No mater how much high level judges will be implied, in the end, the true power will lie solely on the hands of Tim Shields, the unique owner of the corporation.
Magic is for now the only activity of the company, but it won't last. They clearly state on their FAQ that "Our initial client is the Wizards of the Coast and the Magic community. We are in talks with many other companies, both in the table top and esports realms, and are excited to add on partners and opportunities." and that they will also support KeyForge at launch. If, at some point in the future, the Magic Judge Program is not profitable enough for them, it may become a secondary activity and lose part of its support.
For me, the biggest problem with this change is that it now will be required to pay a fee to get certified. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying a small fee to keep the system afloat. I especially wouldn't mind if it was to a non-profit run by other judges. But the amount of those fees is just egregious. Look by yourself:
Rule advisor: free to $50
Level 1 judge: $100
Level 2 judge: $200
Level 3 judge: $400
Those prices are incredibly high. As someone pointed out on Twitter, in some states of the USA, it will cost more to be a certified L3 judge than to be a certified lawyer! The main consequence of this is simple: poor people won't be able to become Magic judges anymore. Period. It's especially heartbreaking, when you know that people at Judge Academy want "to create an inclusive community of recognized tournament experts". The truth is that, even all the goodwill in the world, you can't be inclusive if your prices exclude poor people.
This change also implies that the relation between judges and the body governing the Judge Program will change. It will now be a client-dealer relationship, where Judge Academy will sell training and certifications. And judges won't even even have a choice, since there will be no other option. What Wizards is telling to the people who want to be (or stay) judges is basically "Go buy the expensive products of this company or give up.".
Finally, some of the requirements to become a judge will change. While this isn't a bad thing in itself, some points of this new curiculum are troubling. For example, it is said that, for current L1 judges who would want to be certified, "If you are an L1, you have already been tested on Rules and the JAR. Lessons will focus on Hosting, Demoing, Conflict Resolution, Maintaining Store Relationships, Public Speaking, and more.". What does "Maintaining Store Relationships" means exactly? Will it be about maintaining good relationships with store's owners to ensure the best experience for everybody,or will it consist in maintaining public relationship for the stores, essentially doing free work for a for-profit entity? I may be worried for nothing, but the lack of clear information about those new training isn't really helping
I know the Magic community complains a lot. Actually, I've seen player complain about everything, and often in an aggressive way. I've never liked this attitude, so I always tried to stay positive about everything. I really enjoy Magic so, even when there was a few things I didn't agree with, I never made a big deal of it. But I find some of those changes especially worrying. To be honest, it's the first time since I started playing the game than a decision of Wizards of the Coast really made me angry.
It would be easy to say that Magic players always complain about how the slightest change is going to "kill Magic". I don't think the new Judge Program is going to do this. But I do think it is unfair and will have a negative impact on the quality of judging. Is a world where the only people who can become judges are the ones that can afford to spend at least $100 a year, really what we want?

Who is left out when we narrate the story of Palestine? - Zena Agha, Skin Deep Magazine, 8/8/22
The pieces in [PALESTINE: WAYS OF BEING] are efforts to shape our future. They shed light on three un- and under-explored areas of Palestinian life: queerness, incarceration and Blackness. Looking at where we came from and where we’re going, they expand on some of the ways of being Palestinian today.

The world got very excited about convolution reverbs for a couple of years, but it seems that more traditional algorithmic designs are making a comeback. After all, convolution processors are still pretty CPU-hungry, so in situations where you want three or four reverbs in a mix, they can be impractical. Moreover, they don't tend to offer as much flexibility as their older brethren, and although they provide unsurpassed realism, it turns out that real doesn't always mean better, at least in your average pop mix.
The Industry's Best Workflow. Created by musicians, for musicians, Mixcraft is unrivaled in the industry for its ease-of-use and raw power. Record and mix your tracks to perfection, in record time, with Mixcraft's incredibly intuitive interface, lightning-fast sound engine, reality-defying pitch-shifting and time-stretching technology, and nearly-universal support for third-party plug-ins.

The latest entry in the retro reverb stakes comes from Nomad Factory, whose Blueverb DRV2080 is allegedly 'intended to recreate the warm qualities of vintage-style digital reverbs from the '80s'. And this is pretty much exactly what it does. It's not the sort of plug-in that offers endless potential for tinkering; instead, it provides just a few basic controls, enabling you to get a sound fast, without crippling your PC in the process. Control over the reverb itself is limited to seven familiar parameters, all of which do pretty much what you'd expect, and the output can be shaped by a simple two-band EQ.
It's the sound that counts, and to my ears, DRV2080 does a decent job. Although there appears to be only one reverb algorithm, it's flexible enough to deliver smooth long halls and some fairly recognisable plates, as well as more subtle ambiences. None of them is exactly convincing as an emulation of a real acoustic space, but they can work very well on vocals and other sources within a mix. I particularly liked the plate presets, though I found that their usefulness on vocals was limited by a strong tendency to exaggerate sibilants, which the basic two-band EQ didn't really help with. Overall, however, this is a surprisingly versatile plug-in with a likeable, rich sound that's a lot more dense than that of many algorithmic reverbs. CPU load is minimal, and if you're looking for something that will provide an affordable step up from the reverbs bundled with DAWs like Cubase or Pro Tools, this is well worth considering. Kjaerhus Audio MPL1 Pro
Formats: PC VST
There are quite a lot of high-quality mastering limiters around these days, and it seems that if you want to stand out from the crowd, you have to offer something a bit out of the ordinary. Thus, Sony's Oxford Limiter has its unique Enhance function, while Waves have developed the clever multi-band technology used in their L3.
At first glance, Kjaerhus Audio's MPL1 seems to lack a comparable USP, but closer inspection reveals some very interesting and innovative design features. It's a wide-band, stereo plug-in, and offers all the luxuries you'd expect from a high-end limiter. It uses a look-ahead algorithm and oversamples the incoming audio, enabling it to detect and limit inter-sample peaks. There's excellent level metering, which displays both peak and RMS output levels, and the Pro version includes some helpful additions, such as an input gain control (I know we should all be paying more attention to gain structure in our DAW mixes, but sometimes it's just easier to attenuate the gain on the master channel than to bring every track in your mix down by 3dB!). In terms of the features on offer, the only thing that might be a negative point for some is the relative lack of output dithering options. It's TPDF noise shaping or nothing; I confess I'm unlikely to lose any sleep over that, but the golden-eared might.
So what makes MPL1 special? Two things, as far as I can see. The first is its unusually flexible and musically sympathetic way of setting the limiter release times. There's a manual Release control, but you can also introduce a programme dependent release algorithm. If you do so, the Release control then sets a maximum release time for the programme dependent algorithm, so you can combine the benefits of programme dependent release with the control of a manual system. This isn't so unusual in its own right, but the Pro version goes further. An additional PDR Amount control allows you to introduce a variable amount of programme dependence into the release, while a PDR Time parameter modifies 'the time factor used to identify peaks in the music', and you can also adjust Compression Smoothing, which controls the shape of the transition between hard limiting and the release phase.
The second out of the ordinary feature is, as far as I know, unique to the Pro edition of MPL1, and Kjaerhus say they've applied for a patent to protect it. We're used to being told that stereo linking is essential when using any dynamics process across a stereo mix, in order to prevent the image from wandering, but MPL1 's design challenges this dogma. The idea seems to be that when limiting is triggered by transient peaks in one channel, the audible side-effects of reducing gain in both channels can be noticeable, but that within a short enough time-frame, the disturbance to the stereo image is not. So, what MPL1 Pro allows you to do is, in effect, to set an attack time for stereo linking. This can be varied from 0 to 100 milliseconds. At the former extreme, MPL1 Pro behaves like any other limiter. At the latter, the level in the left channel would need to exceed the threshold for a tenth of a second before limiting in the right channel is triggered.
You’ll be able to race everything from front wheel drive subcompacts to roaring ’60s era muscle cars by the time you’re done, with a few supercar exotics thrown in for good measure. As you impress the locals, you’ll build your own racing gang or team; each additional character actually races along side you and can help you out in a pinch. Wins also net you cash, which you can turn over into seemingly endless varieties of car customization or new vehicles that you’ll be able to unlock as your influence and your list of winning races increases. And of course, there’s straight-up slaloms through busy city streets with a pack of opponents on your tail (or in front of you, depending on how good you are). Each race you win will earn prestige, not only for you but for your little racing club and its control of territory. https://blogvan883.tumblr.com/post/652771639720886272/download-need-for-speed-carbon-for-mac.
As you'd expect, higher attack times for stereo linking can tend to make the stereo image unstable, but used with moderation, I think the results bear out the designers' reasoning: momentary limiting in one channel only didn't disrupt overall imaging, even on headphones. That said, on my test material the benefits were pretty subtle — rather more so, for instance, than those of the Enhance function in Sony's Oxford Limiter. Likewise, the effect of the Smooth control is often hard to notice, though in most respects, the flexible release settings provide clear benefits. In general, MPL1 performs flawlessly, and it's one of the most flexible wide-band mastering limiters I've used. At barely $100 for the basic version and under $150 for the Pro version, it's also excellent value for money. Sam Inglis

Voxengo Marquis
Format: PC VST
Tumblr media
The basic EQs, compressors and effects included in your average DAW program can do a yeoman job, but they often lack flavour while they are doing it. So if you yearn for more upscale effects, but the cash (or credit) is lacking, you could do worse than checking out Voxengo's range. Their Marquis compressor is a step up from the native compressors I've dealt with, even the higher-end versions such as Sonar 's Sonitus Compressor. Voxengo call it a universal compressor since it can be used on individual tracks during mixing, on a buss or, in a pinch, pressed into service as a mastering plug-in. Preset management follows the VST standard, while the right-hand side of the compressor looks and acts like most others, with knobs for Threshold, Ratio, Knee, Attack and Release.
Things get interesting, or at least complex, with the more unusual controls. These include Force, which mixes in a compressed signal with zero release time, and Dry, which allows you to mix the uncompressed signal with the compressed signal to achieve 'parallel' compression. There are also a number of ways to modify the detection and compression algorithms. For instance, the former can be switched between Classic and Round modes, while the plug-in can emulate both a conventional 'feed-forward' design and an optical compressor circuit. You can choose from three different attack and release behaviours, while optional Soft and Sharp modes introduce different varieties of harmonic coloration. You can also engage a phase-linear mode for mastering and other sensitive applications. Switching any single button won't always have a dramatic effect on the sound, but in combination, they are sure to.
Another nice feature is side-chain filtering, with a spectrum analyser to view the results and the ability to listen to the filtered side-chain signal. You can click and drag four breakpoints on a graphical EQ curve, with the Shift, Ctrl and Alt keys providing variable control over the dragging.
Finally, not only does Marquis offer a programme dependent release option, but it allows you to edit the programme dependent 'release contour' in detail. In programme dependent mode, the release time you set manually is treated as a minimum, and the 'release contour' provides three knobs for altering the amount by which the programme-dependence can extend that release time. Raising the values produces a steeper slope, meaning less variation in the release time, while lowering the number straightens the green line to the horizontal, permitting more variation (and hence, on average, a longer release time).
The detailed editing available means that tweakheads can burn up lots of time trying to emulate the sound of their favourite hardware compressors, but for those who want to adjust and move on, there are enough presets and big-picture sculpting tools to get on to the next project quickly. Although Marquis can sound transparent, it can do 'vintage', too, without breaking into a sweat. The drum buss collection provides good starting points, and any preset with 'movement' in the name does just that. They can turn your mild-mannered loop into a seething, pumping thing. Of course, you don't have to mangle sound, and it is easy to add a little glue, sparkle or bass to individual tracks or entire mixes. It is easier to hear it working (in a good way!) than most native DAW compressors, since it doesn't sound like it is straining to affect the sound. Despite its complexity, Marquis manages to stay CPU-friendly, too. This is a plug-in that covers a lot of sonic ground, yet is fairly inexpensive for the quality it provides. Alan Tubbs

Chandler EMI TG12413
Formats: Mac & PC TDM & RTAS
Tumblr media
The best-known studios of the '60s and '70s all had their own, identifiable sound, and none more so than Abbey Road. Lots of factors contributed to the unique sonic fingerprint of EMI's in-house studio, from its engineering practices to the shape of the recording rooms and their lush reverb chambers. Among those factors were the numerous pieces of equipment that were custom-built or extensively modified by EMI staff, and of those, the TG-series desks introduced in the late '60s hold pride of place.
Chandler already make hardware compressors, limiters, preamps and channel strips based on the TG-series design, but TG12413 is their first plug-in. Available for Pro Tools LE and TDM on Mac and PC, it emulates the compressor/limiter built into every channel on the TG-series mixers. It's authorised to an iLok key, and installed by the slightly clunky but effective method of copying two DPM-format files into your Pro Tools plug-ins folder.
One glance at the interface tells you that controllability isn't the prime reason for this plug-in's existence. There are only four controls, all of which are stepped and can be moved either by clicking and dragging, or simply by clicking the appropriate number on the scale. The most basic control is a switch that sets whether the plug-in should act as a compressor or a limiter. These modes have fixed attack times of 44 and eight milliseconds respectively, while release time is adjustable using a six-position Recovery switch. In limiter mode, the fastest release available is 50ms and the slowest two seconds, and switching to compressor mode scales these up by about five times.
As is the case in many vintage dynamics processors, there's no Threshold setting. To get more compression, you simply up the input gain to drive the unit harder. On the original unit, the input gain control was rather unconventional and not especially intuitive, and sensibly, Chandler have provided two versions of the plug-in. One is faithful to the original, while the other has a conventional gain control. And, apart from an output gain control, that's it. A retro-style VU meter displays gain reduction: it's not the most helpful visual feedback, but this isn't the sort of processor you'd use in situations where you need absolute precision. Its raison d'être is to add character to your tracks, and boy, does it do that.
I can't ever recall testing a plug-in compressor that can match TG12413 for sheer punchiness. In compressor mode, it can pump like a nodding donkey in an oil field, but I found I used it more in limiter mode, where the snappier time constants seemed to work for almost everything. The attack is just slow enough to let transients through, so it can add substance to a drum track without losing the initial 'crack' of the snare. Alternatively, it can nail a vocal to the front of the mix without sucking the life from it. Buying TG12413 alone won't turn your mixes into Dark Side Of The Moon, but you may well experience moments when it really does seem to bring a little slice of Abbey Road into your life. Sam Inglis

[#2021]
Tumblr media
Really, 2020, what has gotten into you? It only took more than a couple of months before everything went haywire and causing a worldwide problem that’s so difficult to manage and control. I’m specifically referring to the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, which is still ongoing as of this post.
Anyway, let’s take a recap of all the things that happened in 2020:
I’ve published a total of 42 posts on TWATKcox-WP this year, which is slightly higher than last year.
I officially have a new job for the first time in six years, though I’m currently on a pay-per-work basis. Right now, I still don’t have my TIN (taxpayer’s identification number) and I don’t know if my previous company had already filed my TIN application at the BIR office in Makati. Well, I don’t want to risk getting multiple TINs, which is punishable under Philippine law.
TWATKcox’s 7th anniversary post features the seven things about me. Of course, it includes a very serious accident that left a scar on my scalp as a revelation, the last one on the list.
Taal Volcano in Batangas (south of Metro Manila) erupts, causing damage to houses and crops. Surrounding areas were also affected by the ash fall, prompting those living in nearby areas to hoard face masks.
COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), originating from Wuhan, China (ugh, China!), infects millions of people in almost 200 countries. Several planned events here and abroad (mainly concerts and conventions) were either postponed or canceled for safety reasons.
In late January, I managed to capture some interesting scenes during the Chinese New Year celebration in Binondo, Manila. As a safety precaution due to the possible threat of COVID-19 in the country, I decided to wear my face mask in the area.
I visited the newly-opened Ayala Malls Manila Bay right after Valentine’s day (which turned out to be the final mall-hopping trip before the lockdown), as well as some of the malls (particularly SM Mall Of Asia) in the Bay City area (Pasay). I managed to see my previous employer’s new building along Macapagal Boulevard up close, right next to W Mall (Waltermart).
I bought a lot of manga books earlier this year, including Attack On Titan (volume 9), Nura: Rise Of The Yokai Clan (volume 2), and Buso Renkin (volume 8). Aside from that, I also bought two large plastic storage boxes and four shoe boxes to store my manga collection and my collection of old magazines.
Since March 15, Metro Manila (and the rest of the Philippines) was placed under community quarantine in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. For more than two months, I was stuck at home writing fewer posts for my blog as well as downloading tons of stuff. I find it unimaginable not to leave the house at a time like this, but I managed to do so a few times.
For a while, we have to rely on food deliveries and online shopping sites, mainly for groceries, fresh produce, meat products, and essential items.
In June, an online portal (powered by Weebly) and a third Tumblr site (focusing on my own literary works and fan fiction) were launched. TWATKcox’s Weebly site still remains operational, though no longer updated since last year. Also, all of my Tumblr sites are now using the Strongest theme by Glenthemes.
The Otaku Diaries (previously as The Anime Diaries on TWATKcox-Tumblr) debuted on TWATKcox-WP with a different introduction. I’ve already published a few posts under that series.
In September, I had a third smartphone, a Mi A1 (which is passed down to me by my brother, who had just got a new phone) which is currently running a customized OS that is based on Pixel OS. It took me almost a week to set it up and then I messed it up with a bugged update, As a result, I had to set up the Mi A1 again. Right now, it didn’t get a lot of use since I still have my second smartphone (the Vivo Y53), but I’m actually using it to do various jobs off PC, such as writing various drafts, editing photos, and surfing the internet. Once the pandemic is over, I’ll be using it as a primary phone with the Vivo Y53 as a secondary/music phone, effectively retiring my first smartphone, the LG Optimus L3 II, which I’ve been using since 2014.
I celebrated my 30th birthday with a simple dinner. Nothing special, really. But I think it would’ve end up differently had the pandemic not happened.
A couple of strong typhoons hit the country: Typhoon Goni (Rolly) and Typhoon Vamco (Ulysses). Both typhoons caused serious damage to various parts of Luzon, including Bicol region, Cagayan Valley, Rizal province, and Marikina.
I managed to buy a lot of stuff, some of the items are bought online via Lazada. Among those I bought are a couple of micro SD cards (64 and 128 GB), a 10000 mAh power bank, and a USB hub with SD card reader. My PC got an upgrade too, including a brand new 4 TB hard drive to replace the failing 2 TB hard drive. Of course, I initially have plans to buy some new clothing and accessories, but I decided to hold off for now until the pandemic ends.
I celebrated my tenth year with WordPress. It’s been ten years since I joined the blog-hosting site (WordPress.com) to host my blogs The Kin Keihan Times (second iteration, December 2010 to January 2013, now called The Kin Keihan Times Archives) and The World According To KCOX (since January 2013). More than two years later, in January 2023, the latter will celebrate its tenth year in the cyberspace, another major milestone for my current blog.
As far as Christmas and New Year’s celebration is concerned, I couldn’t enjoy it despite my extreme anticipation for the holidays. Private gatherings are limited to about 10-20 people. Public gatherings are still prohibited, so there will be no New Year’s celebration parties around the country, as well as in other parts of the world.
Before the year ends, I created a new banner for TWATKcox-WP, using one of the edited pics from last year. Nothing special, really.
Tumblr media
Right now, I don’t want to get my hopes up (I’m extremely disappointed about my canceled plans for this year, that’s what) so I won’t be listing down any of the upcoming events here. Same thing goes for my upcoming plans. The only things you should look forward to this 2021 are the main blog’s 8th anniversary and a handful of special posts. Whether or not I’ll get to finish the planned literary special and the autobiography will depend on the COVID-19 situation in the country. If things won’t improve by then, I might be forced to drop these projects altogether.
Frankly speaking, 2020 doesn’t deserve a place in world history. I was hoping that this cursed year be erased from this planet’s existence.
The world is greatly suffering from COVID-19 and it will take a while for this pandemic to end. So, it looks like I won’t have a great new year ahead as well.
And so, I won’t end this with a greeting. Just stay safe, stay healthy, and together, we’ll beat the sh*t out of this f***ing coronavirus that ruined our lives. Yeah, 2020, you’re the worst year in history, ever.
