520,484 - 27% of that is one fic looool

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Right now just HxH and SW:Fallen Order series. Sherlock and Star Trek AOS were big ones too

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Closing the Space (Between Us) - again its 27% of my wordcount! It deserves it! the Hunter x Hunter Killugon Reunion fic of my dreams. I am SO PROUD of this one I have handed it to irl friends! On purpose! My partner got me a physical copy for Xmas 2021!

2. Crying Over Yuuri - a Kyou Kara Maou! fic, which is a fandom I am amazed is still being read. It's a Wolfram POV fic where he, you got it, cries over Yuuri. Pretty fluffy ending. I credit the numbers to the fact that not a lot of fic gets written for KKM anymore so it doesn't disappear under all the new stuff

3. Not Unusual - A ST:AO3 Academy Era McKirk. Bones gets a bunch of clues to something going on with Jim... he gets it a little wrong, Jim freaks out because this man has Issues, but it resolves in the end. I wrote this one as a pinch-hit for an exchange back when I was still RPing Jim Kirk @thewinningscenario

4. 5+1: Are They Or Aren't They? - Somehow my Mystrade (Sherlock BBC) still gets hits with fair regularity and I'll never understand why. It's definitely not my best work but it's cute! 5 times people weren't sure if Mycroft and Lestrade are dating, and the time they know (because they receive a wedding invitation!!)

5. One Flew East, One Flew West - a Killugon Modern AU in which Killua and Gon meet at a Psychiatric Recovery Center, with Kurapika as another patient and Leorio as a therapist. written for HxHBB2020. I'm very fond of this one. It makes me cry <3 I'm so happy there's so much fandom diversity in these! (The next 11 are all either HxH or Sherlock, l o l )

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I wish I could say I did! I mean to! Sometimes I am not in a good place so I mean to do it later and then I forget..... whoof. I am so thankful for each and every review, and I want to repay that!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I wrote a LOT of fics in my teens where people died (not all of them are on A03, it didn't exist at the time. I'm not giving you my ff.net ;) ) Surely, one of them! More recently, I wrote a Dragon Age: Inquisition Lavellan/Dorian in response to Dorian preemptively breaking up with me (rude!) that is Pretty Hecking Angsty. It's tagged "hurt no comfort"

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Closing the Space (Between Us) did so much work to get where it was, and they ended up with Everything! My boys <3 (And Alluka)

8. Do you get hate on fic?

Very rarely! I'm pretty lucky in life that I don't get hate generally. Maybe it's because I'm not Out There enough but- who cares! People are nice and sweet and lovely mostly, and I love writing fanfic for/with them :3

9. Do you write smut?

Sometimes it will appear in other fics. I don't really do PWPs, and smut itself is pretty rare because I don't include it unless it's... necessary? Kinda? Like if the story demands it. I personally only read smut in certain moods, so when smut's included I make it easy to skip, but it certainly exists

10. Do you write crossovers?

It depends! In my Sherlock days I had a Sherlock/Stargate Atlantis crossover series and a Sherlock in the HP universe series, but I haven't done any recently.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of! I heard people copy fics over to Wattpad sometimes but I've never looked. I'm not usually in MegaFandoms anyway, so I don't think I'm in any real danger.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

YES!! A few different Sherlock ones! (I guess I was pretty well known in the Mystrade sphere?? IDK that was back on livejournal. Anyone else miss KinkMemes?) I think one got translated to Russian and one to Chinese. Both reached out to me and asked for permission first, which I of course granted! It's very flattering <3

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Way way way back in my teen years I cowrote a few times- one in YuGiOh and one in Fruits Basket with a high school friend. Recently I am technically cowriting a fic with @spyscrapper atm- I say technically because its really an rp l o l (Star Wars: Jedi Survivor Canon Divergent Spyscrapper, it's pretty hecking cool! And painful! :D ) I once cowrote a fic where the other author just like. eliminated my plotline. so. It's not always good, but it's still fun to try!

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

I refuse to pick One. Killugon (HxH), McShep (Stargate Atlantis), Seishirou/Subaru (Tokyo Babylon & X/1999) and any combination of McSpirk (Star Trek) have probably had the most long-lasting impact on me. And

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?

I often feel like I should finish Pulling The Trigger because it's an interesting casefic and I like the thought of a mystery, but... it's 12 years old at this point, so...

16. What are your writing strengths?

Nature-themed metaphors and descriptions! And I feel like I have pretty strong character points of view! Oh, and angst. I'm good at angst. >:)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Planning 🙃 oops what's that. And I use adverbs too much! (but it's fun so I'll keep doing it)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

It depends why! If a fic is from the POV of Character A and Character B is talking in a language they don't understand, for example, it's fine to use it (though please provide a translation for your reader!) The language switch has to be for a specific reason, and if the character understands it the reader should too. (In One Flew, Gon and Killua sometimes swap to Japanese to disguise their conversations from everyone else- I show that by changing their conversation to italics in most cases.) I definitely wrote a fic as a teen that had all Japanese because I was a weeb and... lol don't do that.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Yugioh, 2001!! It was probably two paragraphs long hahaha

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

Closing the Space (Between Us) for sure! God it's so good. I am begging people to read it. If you're going to read One Thing I have written in my entire life-so-far, please let it be that!!

hey uh scuse me i saw Goodbye Forever Party a while ago and it mostly just left me feeling sad and kinda confused. there were a lot of people just. talking about how much they loved it and idk if this is like. a Socially Acceptable Thing to ask about so sorry if it's not but. I guess I was wondering if you could tell me why you liked it so much? i am genuinely curious :o

oh yeah, i absolutely don't mind!

first off, i think those feelings are a totally fair reaction to have. i should make it clear that i watched GFP when it first came out, mostly didn't "get" it, and then proceeded to watch it A Lot More Times over the last 5 years. the thoughts and feelings i have now took a long while to develop. i do think it's a film that benefits from more than one viewing. it's exploring a lot of things, most of them pretty sad!

there are a lot of things i love about GFP. on the most technical levels: the animation is so amazing and impressive to me. i think the sound design and music is top-tier, i'm kind of obsessed with it. i think some part of its are incredibly funny, and some parts are so evocative they've made me cry. i never thought a single shot of someone's hand slowly moving down a swath of pure yellow could ever make me feel such a strong sense of longing and regret and pain and sadness.

you mentioned the film making you feel sad and confused, which 100% makes sense. lilith is going through a lot of things i have no personal experience with: deep depression, visual and auditory hallucinations, dissociating(?). it took me a while to even understand that's what was happening to her. but i think, in the end, the film has a very hopeful feeling. lilith has a lot of problems, and even after trying to get away from them and improve parts of her life, those scary things remain a part of her.

i wouldn't say GFP really has like... a message... it's not trying to get you to think or feel any particular thing by the end of it. imo it's just a mode of experiencing these feelings. how you feel about them, in the end, is up to you!

Alright, I’m posted up with my oral surgery recovery-friendly pudding and ep 1! I decided to pick a tag for all my first time Babylon 5 watching, which is the first one I’ve tagged below, so y’all can follow or blacklist that as you like.

Babylon 5: Midnight on the Firing Line

I’ve definitely watched too much classic sci-fi because these extremely dated visual effects make me so happy. I love them.

Garibaldi is here, Centauri Ambassador is here, there’s a new crew member...where’s Laurel?! I need her to be in this.

I hated Londo every second in the Gathering but he’s hilarious in this so far.

I really have to get the main alien species and ambassador names down. In my head they’re Hair, Spots, Rock Garden, and Vorlon.

I caved and googled Laurel and am utterly devastated to find out that my beloved will not be a series regular. This is so unfair. I have strong words to send 29 years into the past.

Ivanova has the same eyeliner style that I did in 2007. Not sure if she’s ahead of her (series release) time, or I was way behind mine (probably the latter).

Mister Garibaldi. You are sitting at my station, using my equipment. Is there a reason for this? Or to save time should I just go ahead and snap your hands off at the wrist?

Ivanova is growing on me. I support women threatening disproportionate, gratuitous violence. And Garibaldi is such a limp rag (affectionate). I wanna see her wring him out over the hydroponics.

Will someone please say Rock Garden’s name and species? Why are all the characters so averse to using her name? Is this Delenn? I’ve seen gifs that I think are of her.

My final thoughts are: 1. the series writers have a serious aversion to using female characters’ names. Tumblr tags suggested Susan Ivanova for me, but I had to ecosia-search “Babylon 5 telepaths” and then the suggested list of names to get to Talia Winters. I am now pretty confident that Rock Garden is actually named Delenn.

2. This show is exactly the sort of thing I love, and I’m pleased that I’m watching it right when the remastered version is available. So crisp! So pretty!

3. How rampant are spoilers? I already saw something about Ivanova being a clone, so I’m assuming I should avoid looking things up. Hence why I don’t know what probably-Delenn’s species is called.

Also, I figured out how to make HBO play on firefox, which also fixed the screen recording for gifs issue! Huzzah!

I LOVE chapter 5!!!!!! You are so skillful at describing emotions and how each character is feeling and it blows me away every chapter. I love that we’re getting a hint of Jamie’s life and we can begin to see a change in Ted and Jamie’s relationship. I absolutely love the way you plant little seeds throughout these earlier chapters of the story — like Jamie’s dread of going home, his emotional outburst that occurs suspicious after he looks at his phone, how he appears panicked when Ted insinuates he’s not happy with Jamie’s performance. I’m so attached to this story lol and I’m so happy that you’re active on here to share little future bits and outlines :)

THANK YOUUUUU i'm so so glad that people enjoy my babbling on here, it's so much easier to keep up like. investment in my own work when i get to commiserate with you wonderful people on the way, this is some of the fastest i've written.

the little seeds that are planted here, the way they're gonna grow, it's like. it's so agonizing but so much what's engaging and fun about a slow burn like this. there's so many moments where it's like... it's not clear whether what the pov character is seeing is accurate or if there's something else going on, and knowing things that they dont is like. whoof. man. dramatic irony is a hell of a thing.

the change in their relationship, and in his relationship with the others, is slow coming but it's so fun to finally get to where it's starting to shift. so rewarding after all of the previous lksjfd.

Consolidated story progress 2022-23

I'm bringing my updates onto one post instead of taking up most of what I have on this blog. Art should be the majority! Not repeated walls of text as I try to track some data. Having it all on one post should also make it easier for my brain to look back at my patterns from *checks notes* nearly two years ago (whoof). I haven't really been writing for myself very much this past year, but I would like to get back to it (and more art) soon. The blogger may be constantly tired, but the blog isn't abandoned!

Dec 21 2023 (today as of writing): 46334 total. 105 pages.

<2023: no updates b/c very little writing. Did not, in fact, finish this draft and start second draft this year>

Dec 19 2022: +443 words. 44544 total. Notes: It’s been kind of a while since I’ve sat down with intention, though I’ve caught some opportunities for a few sentences here and there. I’m trying a new POV and having some extra free time helps. I am on (I believe) the final third and I have my outline in a good place. Resolutions and wrap-ups, ~50 pages left. All the respect to nanowimo writers. There’s only a few more days left in December, but I hope to finish this draft and start my second draft next year.

July 18 2022: +5,236 words since last update (plus uncounted planning). 33,565 total (more than 30k, woah!). 75 pages. Notes: Not sure how much I'll sick to it, but I've been thinking the story will be "segmented" into three parts. The first 50 is my setup, the next 50 is the body and building off the set ups, the final 50 will be the climax and payoffs/end. I'm halfway through the second "arc." I recently read that 30k is about a third of a novel, which is validating and puts me right about on track. They're small enough chunks that I can have goals and planning, but they're big enough that I don't feel constrained so I can still stretch and play. I stopped reading to my friend about 50 pages in because we just caught up to where my writing left off, and I do so infrequently enough that it seemed silly to read to them only every couple of nights (and have the pressure to keep up with it like that). We agreed that where we left of was actually a really good place. “Like a season cliffhanger” and thinking about it like that-- three sections with their own arcs set within an overall story--has been super helpful to how I’m choosing to pace. It’s just my first draft, so it only has to exist, but this way of thinking about it is new for me and I like the way it sits in my brain.

June 22 2022: +1,909 words. 28,329 total (almost 30k, wow!). +5 pages. Notes: this is from two days, but they’re getting one update because I forgot. Working title achieved!

June 10 2022: +1204 words +3 pages :)

June 6 2022: +617 words. 52 pages.

May 18 2022: +499 words. 24019 total.

May 9 2022: +1,472 words in planning. Notes: Wanted to put down the progress :) Reading to my friend has caught up with how far I’ve written, and I’ve been a little stuck on what comes next. But I think I have a direction again. It’s still a little rough on what’s directly next, but I’m feeling good for what’s generally after.

April 25 2022: +608 words. 22,055 total. 51 pages. Notes: I deleted a couple paragraphs. Things are amping *up*!

April 25 2022: +972 words. 21,331 total. 50 pages. Notes: I just did a crush scene and I feel all blushy, aw

April 18 2022: +3,979 since last update. 20,337 total (20k!). 48 pages. Notes: Plot is coming together. I don't quite know what is coming after this next bit, but it's the first draft and we'll figure it out as we go. It just has to exist. We’re gonna get dramatic slice-of-life-y here soon! Reading to a friend is definitely helping me be motivated. The internal sense of "needing to write more because we're going to run out of story to read" keeps a deadline feeling going. Plus, though there's a lot that's still up in the air (ha), it’s fun and encouraging to share with someone and re-read things without the time or intention to edit.

oh jesus fuck. whoof. okay. were you expecting an essay? no?? should have asked somebody else.

“by god, it is as well for you. if you had killed watson, you would not have got out of this room alive.” from “the adventure of the three garridebs.” this is obvious but also - it’s such a moment. such a pivotal emotional upheaval for both characters - holmes in a moment of pure anger & fear and watson seeing that happen! everything that means! kind of vicious, incredibly romantic. there’s a reason 3GAR is, like, the hurt-comfort holmes story of all time. i love it so much. it’s not in the public domain but i don’t care because i will take a bullet in the leg myself to be able to effectively talk about it. 3GAR i am coming for you, doyle estate be damned.

"no, we’re much more than that. we’re two people who love each other.” from elementary. this show does a very clever thing where joan will say something offhand, and then sherlock repeats it back to her later with three times the emotional womp. (i.e. “i think what you do is amazing.”) this is the BEST example of that. they do! that’s really all there is to it. no matter where or when.

“we have shared the same room for some years, and it would be amusing if we ended by sharing the same cell.” from the adventure of charles augustus milverton. there are all these coded implications about blackmail & its victims, & how holmes & watson’s shared decision to purposefully break the law in CAM puts them on the side of sympathizing with those victims that is so fascinating & fragile & wonderful to me. but on top of that, this is also just hilarious. the definition of “good friends will bail you out, best friends will be right there in jail with you” and whatnot. people forget how funny holmes is. i love this entire scene so much.

“i believe in mathematics, logic chemistry, in your eyes red in the cold and in your good heart.” from the new russian holmes series. need i say more??

“my dear watson,” said the well-remembered voice, “I owe you a thousand apologies. I had no idea that you would be so affected.” from “the adventure of the empty house.” this line is a) heartwrenching and b) hysterical. they’re probably crying on each other, watson fainted for the first and only time in his life, and sherlock holmes is the master of crystal clear observations about the human condition that come to him about a minute and a half later than they’d actually be useful. they probably have weird & weepy sex because one of them was dead & the other married for a while about six hours after that line is uttered.

“good old watson! you are the one fixed point in a changing age.” from “his last bow.” people use this line in reference to watson a lot, but it has such a solid sentimentality to it that i understand why. its said by characters looking into the brink of wwi and also their old age, but it’s also so telling of how holmes thinks about watson - as a solid and steadying presence running through his life

Summary: Mark and Oliver had had plans to raise their son Tobias, keep co-hosting movie nights with too much Thai food, and eventually retire and spend their twilight years bothering Tobias and the next generation of Ritzes and Michaels-Hayeses. They were good plans, and they were obliterated when a whistleblower at the AM revealed the existence of atypicals and Tier 5 to the public. Suddenly Mark was a celebrity, “atypical” was a household word, and Oliver was on the run again, desperately trying to ignore the news and any mention of his ex-boyfriend. But as the revolution spread, even Oliver couldn’t avoid being drawn back in.

I finally finished Sheehan’s book, Disappearing Act, and I decided to rank which short stories I enjoyed from most to least along with a blurb about why.

Please note that this is not meant to be a proper critique. I am not looking at the stories over-critically or picking them apart piece by piece. These are just my first thoughts and feelings after having read them and are purely subjective.

For other people who have finished the book, I’d love to hear your thoughts, too! I’m itching to discuss some of these. c:

Anyways, without further ado, spoilers for Disappearing Act in the blurbs. The final thoughts at the very bottom are spoiler free.

1. Funeral (1st story) - Fun in a graveyard (haha) humor kind of way. I got very Alfred Hitchcock / Twilight Zone type vibes from this one; the creeping sense of dread in something as grey, familiar, and human as a funeral, or a man coveting someone else’s wife. Love this one. It got a good chuckle out of me despite the subject and I'll definitely read this one again.

2. Skin (4th story) - Terrifying and, along with “Funeral”, probably one of the most well-written of the bunch. I loved the detailing of the main character’s daily life, how her meticulousness and obsessiveness is shown through Rob’s word choices. The slow build toward the climax had my heart racing and my only critique is the Hag's dialog. I’m not fond of overusing dialect and Rob really pushed writing her accent to detail. It slowed down the pacing and I just always find too much accent work in text a little tacky. Still! An excellent story that I’ll probably read again. Great horror.

3. Desert Donkey Legs (8th story) - I love this one. Whimsical, strange, and captures a kind of freedom I think I've only experienced in dreams where I'm flying or, sort of like the main character, running with a superhuman sort of speed and grace (minus the fuzzy legs). I'm sure if I dug deeper, I'd find something more meaningful, but my first impression after reading this one is simply a jealousy for the animal kingdom. It's vicious in reality, but in a romanticized light, a person could almost imagine that most animals have it pretty easy. What does a donkey have to worry about but eating and sleeping? A dog? A cat? A mole? I think this story does a good job of capturing that sort of desire to find freedom outside the restrictions of human society. I enjoy this one a lot and don't actually find it quite as sad as the others.

4. Treasure (9th story) - A disturbing (but thankfully non-explicit) glimpse into the mind of a pedophile. Ranking this one above "Rose" only because I think it's better written and works well as a thriller or horror, and I’ve never cared all too much for fantasy. It’s more grounded in reality than the other pieces, and therefore much more terrifying. Overall a successful, brief character piece that, while jarring, treats the main character with the disgust he’s due. Not much else to say about this one.

5. House In the Country (10th story) - Whoof. If I'm honest, I didn’t know where to rank this one. It’s on par with “Treasure” and I’m only giving it number 5 by a very slim margin, with that margin being that “Treasure” felt much more satisfying by the end as we have the certainty that the criminal got what he deserved and things will look brighter for the town once he’s behind bars. Ian’s death in “House In the Country” was also satisfying, but that satisfaction is ruined by Dylan’s fierce hope for his future and the reader’s knowledge that his television heroes are never going to arrive to save him. This is certainly the heaviest of the stories, but the most well-written. "House In the Country” is the first story where I forgot entirely that I was reading “A Book By Robert Sheehan”, and I was just reading “A Book”, and that’s a great thing. It shows some promise in Sheehan’s ability to branch out into producing more fiction, with a bit more polish. I think I could write a whole essay picking this one apart and talking about the things I loved.

6. Rose (3rd story) - Surreal to the point that I got a little confused at times about the world, which could have done with some better exposition, but beautiful. It reads like a dream twisting to a nightmare and I liked that a lot. I think this story would be best suited as a full novel rather than a short story and of all the stories, I think this is the one I would like to see expanded.

7. We Are All Alive At the Same Time Hurtling Through Space (15th story) - A small glimpse into the affair between an elderly ambassador and her younger attaché. There isn’t a whole lot to say about this one, as it’s really just that, a glimpse, but I liked it a lot for both how it was written and the charm of the characters. I especially loved the bits about how we pick up things from our parents, which they picked up from their parents, and so on and so forth, and how those little things (such as a simple throat-clearing) can survive through generations. Parts of our ancestors and their ancestors live on, forever, through their descendants. There’s just something enamoring about that.

8. Snakes (6th story) - Less interesting than the others, but I enjoyed the twin element and the somber end. I’d like to have something more interesting to say and pick apart the meaning behind the snakes and the reference to Old Dark Magic in relation to Sa, but I’ll need to re-read it. Maybe I’ll do that some other time. Anyway, this one is well done.

9. Salvador Daley (16th story) - This one had an interesting storytelling quality about it that made it feel like being spoken to, face-to-face, at a pub, listening to someone talk about an odd firebug local. There’s really not much else to say about it. This is the second to last story (and the final one written by Rob) and, yeah, definitely think I’m getting tired at this point. Not for a lack of enjoyment, but perhaps a lack of structure.

10. Alleyway (13th story) - This is another head-scratcher. It isn't as surreal as the others, I just don't understand the symbolism behind the alleyway man or the main character's motivation to break his routine. Maybe, just first-thinking, it's a commentary on how wound up in technology and capitalism we all are, how we let it rule our lives and, in a way, turn us into little machines desperate for any sort of positive change. I think the main character breaking routine and going a little nuts to give alleyway man a taste of nature is an example of a person attempting to escape, or maybe symbolic of someone who only pretends to care about the earth at surface level, so long as it's big and loud and leads to internet fame?

11. Medusa (5th story) - Could be the (albeit pretty tastefully written) sex scene that put me off, but I didn’t like this one either, and it was hard to decide whether which I disliked more: this one, or English Def. In the end, I decided I disliked this one the most because there’s a very sudden POV change that tripped me up and pulled me out of the story. It’s also told in second person singular, which can be done well, but this story sort of loses its traction around the middle.

12. No Frills (11th story) - Some nice lines that I really enjoyed and had a decent start but totally unraveled for me halfway through. I'm either too stupid to understand this or way, way too sober.

13. English Def (2nd story) - A trudge. Enjoyed some parts, but overall I didn’t think this one was very pleasant (not that it needs to be! I just didn’t care for it). Again, the overuse of dialect bothered me. I suppose if the goal was to make me really feel like an angry Englishman drunk off his head, then it did a wonderful job lmao

14. Vending Machine (14th story) - Didn’t care for this one. Well-written enough but I don’t think Rob should have written from the standpoint of an American, not because he’s Irish but there’s a few oddities that sort of take me out of the story because I’ve never heard an American speak the way this guy does. But then I don’t know any truckers so maybe it’s a subculture I’m not familiar with. In any case, this one, like most, had some interesting bits, but overall was just too meandering for me. I know that plot is secondary or not even all that important in these stories, but I think some plot is required for a story to be compelling. Even character driven stories or studies say something about the character. This one...? I don't know. I could just be missing something but I feel that I didn't learn anything about this character. If there's any symbolism to be had with the vending machine, its flown straight I've my head.

15. Scab (12th story) - Unfortunately another story I didn't care much for, but with only five more stories to read at this point, I've realized that surreal stories just aren't for me. I think this one could be about self-harm but while the character ends up intentionally hurting himself at the end, that doesn't quite feel right either. Dunno. This one didn’t do much for me personally.

16. Frayed (7th story) - Unlike “No Frills”, “English Def”, and “Medusa”, which... I didn’t like as a whole but could find some spattering of something enjoyable, "Frayed" was an unpleasant read both in style and subject. The concept is intriguing and nightmarish in a way that could be fun, but I don’t like the execution. I think I actually could have been more okay with this one if it hadn't included the yelling for help, shushing, and burping. It went from bizarre, surrealistic horror and veered screeching tires and all into vore fetish territory. Not to shame anyone's kinks, you do you, but it's not for me, and Rob has awakened a whole new squick for me that I didn't even realize I had. So... thanks, Rob, sorry, Rob?

There’s also final short story by Joseph Sheehan (I assume Joe Sheehan, Rob’s dad) which I won’t talk too much about since Rob didn’t write it. It’s nice, though, and has a similar feel as “Salvador Daley”.

SO. Anyway, TLDR, overall thoughts...

Without spoiling too much, Disappearing Act is quite a bit darker than I was led to believe by earlier marketing. Where I expected something fun and light-hearted, I got severe child abuse, attempted mutilation, urine, and potential vore fetish. However. With the exception of “Frayed” which, I’m sorry, I hated, Robert handles his subjects well and the darkest and most disturbing of the stories (”House In the Country”) is actually one of the best written.

Overall, this was a good debut for Rob as an author. It isn’t perfect, many of the stories suffer a bit structurally, and from my rating list, I’d really probably only re-read 1-9, but it’s not a bad book by any means. You can tell that there is a lot of heart behind them, and passion. Rob’s note at the beginning very much makes the book feel like a personable gift to his audience. So even though some lines or stories read like someone trying a little too hard, you can still feel the love and sincerity behind the words, ideas, and whatever he’s trying to convey.

I’m glad to have read it, overjoyed for Rob, and I hope we get to see more of his writing soon. I’m eager to see how he grows and get another peak at that wonderfully strange mind of his.

I beat Metroid Dread on Hard Mode...

...In 4 hours and 5 minutes.

I did a normal sequence as optimized as I could, spammed flash shift, utilized every boss shortcut technique except the morph ball bomb for Kraid, but- I am horrifically reminded of when I screwed up my run and wasted time heading back to Dairon from Burenia after getting the Flash Shift, but I used the wrong tram, and thus let myself foolishly wonder for a bit before I consulted a guide! And instead of resetting my progress to save the time, I just went on!

GOD, if I’d just reset my progress to amend that... I might’ve just made it within four hours, barely! The Metroid Dread artwork ending... Truly unattainable. Maybe next time, if there is a next time, I’ll go for the professional sequence breaking strat. Still, not bad for my first ever attempt at a video game speedrun, I suppose?

...My arms, wrists, hands, and fingers are sore. It feels like they’re just gonna. Collapse. Stop working. Stop feeling and functioning, because the flesh is too exhausted to respond to the neural inputs, like a faulty game controller. Whoof.

1. That ending scene in Friendless Child. This is the pinnacle. The peak. The moment where if I had to show a random person exactly one scene from Boardwalk to prove how married these two are, it would be this one. The warm, contented, lovesick way Charlie is openly staring at Meyer throughout their entire conversation with Torrio. The way they’re so relaxed and at peace, finally. The psychic conversation we watch them have while Torrio is talking. When Meyer reaches for Charlie’s arm. The first time I watched it I thought “oh wow they’re actually going to kiss,” not even in a sdkhfgkjfhd way but just this moment of calm surprise because it looked that much like Meyer was going to grab him and kiss him. THE TENDER WAY MEYER HOLDS ONTO HIS ARM AND STARES DEEPLY INTO HIS EYES!!! THE WAY CHARLIE SMILES BACK!!! WHOEVER IN THE EDITING ROOM DECIDED TO FADE THE SONG IN HALFWAY THROUGH ON THE LYRIC “FOR MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE, THERE’S NO LOVE FOR NOBODY ELSE” FOR THIS. The fact that everyone knew they looked So Absolutely In Love that they had to tack on random women for plausible deniability, but that didn’t even work because Charlie and Meyer barely even LOOK AT THEM because they’re too lost in each other’s eyes. Like WE GET IT!!!! YOU’RE IN LOVE!!!!!!!

2. Speaking of being incredibly married, I love their exchange over the stolen watches. “Might as well set up a pushcart,” “fellas who know what time it is,” the SNARKING AND JOKING WITH EACH OTHER! There’s a lot to unpack in terms of what’s going on off-screen (Charlie’s bloody knuckles and Meyer’s sigh of “I wish you’d stop with this,” like how regularly does Charlie beat someone up and steal counterfeit watches??) But the way they joke with each other and tease each other, it’s so comfortable, it’s so familiar. It’s one of the only times we get to see them alone together and at ease—no high stakes gangster situation, no serious business talk. Just two people who’ve known each other since they were kids, who are totally comfortable around each other, and who joke and tease and sigh at each other like the old married couple they are.

3. The way Meyer grounds Charlie in their finale scene in season 3. The way Meyer’s anger from out in the hallway dissolves as soon as he puts two and two together (and he puts it together way before Charlie does). The intimacy of Meyer’s hand on Charlie’s neck. (And WHAT A CHOICE too. His neck? That’s such an intimate place to touch someone, but when you’re Meyer/Anatol’s height it’s also somewhat impractical, so the fact that they still chose to have him reach up and touch Charlie in such an intimate vulnerable place in order to steady up and stand with him….. WHOOF THE INTIMACY). That moment where Charlie is lost and helpless and angry and confused—and he locks eyes with Meyer and you see him deflate, you see the anger disappear from his eyes and you see the hurt instead. The way he looks at Meyer like he’s a drowning man and Meyer’s the only thing that floats for miles. The way Meyer DOES NOT! TAKE! HIS! HAND! off Charlie’s neck. Even when he has to grit his teeth and disparage Charlie a little in order to save their skin (and you see, oh you see, how bad it tastes in his mouth to have to say any of that), he never takes his hand off Charlie. The way he says with his body Don’t listen, you know it’s not true, you know I’m with you. It’s such a vulnerable scene (side note: that’s something I love and admire about Vincent Piazza’s acting in particular, that he’s never afraid to go really vulnerable with his acting choices, which is an impressive choice for a man who often plays, well, prickly assholes where you wouldn’t expect it). This scene is so powerful and intimate between the two of them. And it’s telling about the strength and importance of their bond that this intimate moment happens in front of AR and Masseria.

3b. It’s not as powerful a moment, because it’s a much smaller scene on a much smaller scale, but for similar reasons I also love the scene at the end of season 2 where Jimmy and Charlie are arguing and Jimmy calls him Sal and—again with the vulnerable acting choices—Charlie’s upset. He’s not angry, he’s upset. And I love how Meyer immediately cuts in with “is THAT the issue” to change the subject. I love how Charlie retreats to Meyer’s side and stands with his back to the room for a moment to collect himself because he’s safe at Meyer’s side, while Meyer is standing there arms crossed and baring his teeth. I love that in the middle of these fraught moments with other gangsters, if Charlie needs him, Meyer’s there. And you can tell how much Meyer makes him feel safe.

4. Shayna punim and try not to sit by the window—or How To Say I Love You Without Saying Those Exact Words. The intent way Meyer shifts his focus to Charlie as soon as he comes in the room. The little nod behind Benny’s back that Charlie wants to talk in private. The total lack of hesitation on “I’ll come with you.” MASSERIA HATES! THAT SHAYNA PUNIM OF YOURS! 💖Just Extremely Platonic Business Partner Things: complimenting his beautiful face in his own language💖 I was also so caught up in the other great lines in this scene that I almost forgot about “this is the problem with you, always very headstrong, good thing I’m hear to talk some sense” and Meyer, through all the tension, laughs. It’s such a familiar way to talk, such a teasing way for Charlie to say, “I am very headstrong and I need you to talk some sense,” but like TEASING HIM ABOUT IT INSTEAD OF SAYING IT OUTRIGHT BECAUSE THEY’RE JUST LIKE THAT. How Meyer can’t even look at him when he says “try not to sit by the window” but how he can’t look away as Charlie leaves, with that look on his face that says I love you so much, please come home safe.

5. I wrote the first four answers immediately and then took a couple days to decide on my 5th one, but I think that I’m going with Their Final Scene ever, even though there’s very little conversation between the two of them. But, you know, OUR FRIENDS, OUR PARTNERS!!!!!!!! The very deliberate choice of our friends = shot of Benny and our partners = shot of Meyer. And OH THAT SHOT OF MEYER, sitting there with the slow blink of a cat in a patch of sunshine who also just killed and ate the canary. Like that smug “mhm, yes I AM the one sitting at his right hand. Not any of you. Me.” That pride. That satisfaction. That “yeah, he’s mine” vibe. Overall, I admit it’s more of a significant scene for Charlie than for Charlie/Meyer necessarily, but I love that it’s been such a big part of Charlie’s narrative, the constantly being told “don’t work with them, you’re one of us, we’re your people, not them,” but then everything culminates in a scene where Charlie says “actually fuck that, it doesn’t matter if you’re Italian or Jewish or Irish #LoveWins,” where he’s got Meyer and Benny beside him and THEN the Italians. The table might be round for a reason, but who’s sitting beside you is still significant, Charlie. Plus, the fact that after the whole table does a toast, the FINAL SHOT OF CHARLIE AND MEYER is them sitting back down and quietly toasting each other. Yes, yes, they did the business bit with everyone else, but this is for them. And even though the audio is soft, the chorus of Italians toasting “salute” followed by Meyer getting the last word for Team NY, toasting Charlie with “l’chaim.”
