Rules of the Game Ch. 1

Chapter 1: Angling the Deck

Summary: With the deck stacked so unfavorably against Dark, he decides to even the playing field a little bit.

A/N: Briefly touches on Logan dealing with stuff that I will touch on more in future fics. Like PTSD from a previous fic.

He’d snuck out dozens of times to hang out with his friends late at night, it was almost routine and if his mom or siblings knew then they didn’t talk about it.

So a young fifteen-year-old boy snuck out of his mother’s small house and walked out into the streets, hoodie pulled down although he doubted many of his father’s friends would’ve recognized him by sight.

Deeper into downtown Brighton he met up with some of his friends to engage in some of their usual antics: spray painting and generally pissing off the locals.

So he snuck into an alleyway next to a cafe where two of his friends were already working on something. They had climbed onto a fire escape to get higher

“Hey, Paddy, yah piece ‘a shite,” one of the other teens threw him a spray can. “Took yeh ages.”

“I got here, didn’t I?” Paddy walked over to the bag.

“While yer down there, can yah pass me a blue?” His friend asked.

“Only if yah catch,” Paddy smiled and tossed the can up, perfectly landing in his hand.

They started joking and laughing, until a shrill ringing echoed through the alley. A man in a dark grey suit stood at the mouth of the alley, all four kids froze where they were.

“Pádraig,” Dark smiled, an expression that. “I’ve heard so much about you.”

“The hell yah want?” Paddy spat at him, looking for possible weapons or an exit.

Dark smiled at the young man, “Oh no, you have it all wrong, Mr. Brody. It’s what I can do for you.”

Chase walked into the main common area for the base. The atmosphere was tense, as if he’d just missed something. Logan was sitting with Patton in the corner of the main area, chair back against the corner of the room and a small tray table next to him with a cup of coffee. Patton was just happily talking to Logan who was leaning into him and reading a book.

Logan was always awake when Chase was up, which was a problem because Chase was a known insomniac and he often found Logan tucked away reading some book with Virgil sleeping against him or working on something with dark circles under his eyes.

He didn’t think Logan was sleeping, the Sides explained that he was having nightmares whenever someone asked, and it was hard for him to go to sleep afterward. His only hope was that he would find a method to deal with them in time.

Today looked like one of those bad afternoons, the kind where Logan didn’t talk about anything and bury his attention in a book or some project.

Marvin seemed a bit too eager to leave with Seán and Chase, all three of them in plain casual clothes, even if Marvin took forever to cast an illusion over his face to cover up the scars he’d gotten years ago. But eventually Chase got into his car with Marvin and Seán and they started driving.

Normally Chase stayed away from his ex, they’d been divorced for years, almost five years now and even before then Chase and Stacy had been having issues. Chase’s alcoholism and recklessness being chief among them. Chase was only allowed visitation to his kids if there was someone else with him. Even then Chase was sadly certain that his visits were only for his sake, not anyone else’s.

But Damien and Chase had talked about their families. Dark had been vague, but Chase hadn’t. It’d been a couple days since Damien had been unmasked as a manipulative, demonic mob boss . . . and Chase had put his family in danger by buying into the illusion.

So after a call to his ex that turned into an angry argument, he was driving over to talk in person.

Chase appreciated driving, he got to focus on something else. Halfway into their trip, uneasy tension in the car that was only kept back by random pop songs on the radio, Marvin spoke up.

“I think Logan’s got a fear ‘a knives now,” Marvin commented seriously as they drove, turning down the radio a bit. “Completely understandable, but something people should be aware ‘a so we don’t set him off.”

“Somethin’ happen?” Chase asked.

“Logan was inta the book he was reading an’ I was showin’ Ethan some of my knives, an’ my hand slipped. Thin’ hit the table an’ Logan stiffened like I’d thrown it at ‘im. Ran outta the room an’ didn’t come back fer a half an hour. When he did, it was with Patt.”

“What the fook was he doing spyin’ on Dark?” Seán demanded. “He almost died.”

“We know if he’s seein’ anybody ‘bout this?” Chase asked.

“Lo’s always kinda kept ta the Sides, I probably know more ‘bout Virgil than I do ‘bout him,” Marvin admitted. “Even if he was, I doubt he’d tell us right now.”

“Think kickin’ the shit outta Dark would help?” Seán asked, texting Stacy, warning her that they were getting closer.

“It’d make me feel better,” Marvin promised.

When they finally got to her house, Stacy was already at the front door. She glared at them as they got out of the car, “He sober?”

“Dry as one ‘a yer funnel cakes,” Marvin held up the paper. “Doc couldn’t be here ta speak fer himself.”

She took the paper which was a full drug and B.A.C test, which was the reason they’d come over at mid-day and not earlier. It was full of signatures to verify it from not just Chase and the other Septics, but Mark and Logan as well. Stacy read through it before turning to Chase, “Paddy’s out wit’ his friends, if he’s not back before yah leave there’s nothing I can do.”

“Okay,” Chase said, his mind remembering the last argument he’s gotten into with his eldest son. The thing that almost cut off even talking to his kids after the mess with Anti.

“First off, what were yah thinking?” She spat at Chase, starting to argue with him outside her house.

“I thought he was my friend,” Chase defended.

“Hey, look, he got all ‘a us, an’ who knows what other identities he was able ta get?” Seán cut in. “We all thought he was on level. We all fooked up, I was the one who told Chase ta help watch that asshole.”

“You guys don’t get ta let him off the hook either,” Stacy reminded. “This isn’t the first time he’s put his own bloody kids at risk. It was fine when it was the two of us, but yah folks weren’t here when he was drunk and blathering on ta everyone who would listen.”

“I wasn’t drunk when I was talking ta him,” Chase insisted.

“You’re not drunk now,” Stacy held up the paper. “But you’ve lied and been fucked on the job.”

“I’ve been sober for months!” Chase insisted.

“We have him tested regularly,” Marvin cut in, pulling out his phone and pulling up the record of test results that Henrik had given him access to. “The brainiacs keep a full digital record ‘a it, the only thin’ he’s got in his system is caffeine an’ nicotine. An’ you can’t blame the guy fer switchin’ one fer the other.”

“Fine,” Stacy allowed, turning to the front door. “Come in then.”

The instant they were inside, Marvin was tackled by Chase and Stacy’s two ten-year-old twins.

“Magic Man!” They cheered as they pulled on his coat.

The girl twin jumped up excitedly, two fistfuls of Marvin’s coat, “Show us a trick!”

“I wanna see a magic trick!” The boy twin repeated, pulling on the other side of his coat. Marvin smiled and summoned three small orbs of green fire and started moving them around and doing tricks with them.

He smiled at the other adults, “I’ve got the kiddos.”

“Don’t burn my house down,” Stacy ordered.

The boy’s eyes seem to glow in excitement, looking over at Marvin and the fireballs he had. “Give ‘em to me.”

“Not on yer life,” Marvin smiled at him.

“Hey Lills, hey Tee,” Chase smiled.

“Hey Daddy,” Lily smiled back at him.

“Tell Marvin ta give me the fire,” T.B demanded.

“No,” Chase already had this look of resigned exasperation as he looked at Stacy, “How do yeh manage?”

“I don’t give ‘em fire ta play wit’ and that usually works,” Stacy reminded sharply.

Marvin was left with the kids, showing them magic tricks — some with actual magic and others with just some slight of hand — as Seán and Chase went into the kitchen to talk.

The talk was a bit hostile as Chase explained the whole situation, but it calmed down after a while. They were just standing around talking. After a while they agree that Marvin would ward the house, and she’d call Chase or Seán if anything changed.

After that point, Stacy looked a bit uneasy, “So, I wasn’t gonna mention it, but yah guys seem actually serious ‘bout this.”

“We are,” Chase agreed. “I am.”

“So Paddy always sneaking off every night, and usually it’s not that big a deal since I know the boys, but he’s been coming home busted up sometimes and other times he doesn’t come back till after school the next day.”

“Yah know where he’s been goin’?” Chase asked.

“Which excuse yah want?” Stacy offered. “At this point I’ve heard ‘em all and then some. He even joked he’d joined a gang ta get me to drop the subject.”

“Has he?” Seán asked in concern. “There’s lots’a bad groups in the area.”

“I don’t know if his friends formed a gang or what, but I know it’s something dangerous because he came home with a busted finger, and said he sprained it.”

“How long has this been goin’ on?” Chase asked.

“Bout a week, I’d reckon,” Stacy admitted.

“Mind if we follow the kid fer a bit,” Seán offered. “If it’s just a bunch of kids taggin’ a wall or pushing some cars, we’ll just slap ‘em on the wrist an’ send ‘em home. If not, then we’ll see what we can do from there.”

“If yah boys are already going out,” Stacy agreed.

“Right, I’ll get Marv started,” Seán stood up. “Hey, Catboy an’ his Magic Hands, we got a job.”

When Seán walked back into the living room, Marvin had the two twins around him, one had his cape and Lily had her hand in one of his magical top hats.

“I think I got it,” Lily smiled and pulled out a very confused and angry American opossum from the hat. Marvin startled in surprise. “I got it!”

The opossum hissed and wiggled in her grip. Marvin drove and shoved the marsupial back into the hat and took it away from her. “Good job,” he smiled nervously. “Well, I gotta get back to work.”

“No!” The both yelled at Marvin.

“I’ll be back, just need ta check something an’ I can do one more magic act,” Marvin promised and Chase knocked on Paddy’s door. Seán was walking around the house with Stacy to check for anything suspicious.

“So,” Marvin started as they walked into the room. “Yeh want the good news, the bad news, or the funny news?”

“Good,” Chase sighed, walking over to Paddy’s closet and quickly looking for anything out of place. Like bullet holes in one of the shirts or a strangely immaculate 1,000 dollar suit that a fifteen-year-old who ran around town at night and wrote graffiti had no reason to own . . . unless he worked for Dark.

“So Lills is definitely gonna be a powerful magician one day, if she isn’t already, she’s got way more potential than any kid I’ve seen in years,” Marvin praised confidently as Chase tried to disturb the least amount of things possible, looking under his son’s bed as Marvin continued. “I mean who summons a demon rat from a hat instead ‘a rabbit?”

“Pretty sure opossums aren’t rats,” Chase reminded.

“Hey, I didn’t go to school for biology so I could use it,” Marvin huffed. “I got it so I could pervert the laws ‘a nature.”

“Yeah, no need ta remind me,” Chase muttered under his breath as he stood up.

“What was that?” Marvin glared at him.

“Nothin’,” Chase told him sharply. “Kay, his room’s clean.”

“What should I use?” Marvin shrugged.

Chase reached into the laundry basket and pulled out a dark red hoodie at the bottom of, tossing it to the magician. Then Chase grabbed the entire laundry basket and dragged out of the room and towards the laundry room. “So what’s the bad news?”

“Anti wasn’t blowing smoke up yer ass, she’s powerful an’ she needs direction,” Marvin said.

“No,” Chase denied, setting the basket down a little harder than necessary. “Even if it was up ta me, Stacy is gonna say no.”

“It’s either us or the villains,” Marvin reminded. “An’ I’m sick and tired of them having a stranglehold over this whole place. We made a huge strike against Dark, an’ now we gotta focus on Anti.”

Chase wiped his hands down his face, “Just, ask Stacy, I can’t say yes or no either way.”

“Fine,” Marvin snapped. “She’ll say no, but fine.”

“What was the funny news?” Chase tried to change the conversation.

“Tee’s got a new nickname,” Marvin answered. “Paddy an’ his friends gave it ta him.”

Chase held his breath a little bit, “What is it?”

“Toss Boy,” Marvin smiled.

“Why—” Chase started, but he paused. “Yah know, it’s not as bad as the last one.”

“Paddy competes with Roman fer givin’ the best nicknames,” Marvin smiled.

The three Septics eventually had to leave, Paddy still gone and Stacy agreeing to call if he showed back up while Marvin and the two other two Septics went back to the base with Chase’s son’s hoodie to start a tracking spell, Marvin more than a bit salty that Stacy had denied him taking Lily under his wing as an apprentice. But he was joking around while he worked.

“Here we go,” Marvin had Paddy’s hoodie in one had and a large needle in the other.

“We need anythin’ else?” Seán was already back in his Jackieboy costume.

“An apprentice,” Marvin reminded.

“No,” Chase told as Chase and Jackie began following the magician out into the city to find Paddy.

Marvin huffed and they started following Paddy’s trail.

Summary: as one of the other 43 kids born that day you where unaware of your abilitys until they took the thing you loved the most ruining your life until you run into a strange group

You slammed the bag on to the table.

"That enough?" the man behind the counter looked up at you and guestured for you to spill it's contents.

You huffed grabbing the bottom of the bag and yanking it to let everything fall on to the table. He leaned forward examining everything.

"Looks like you're a few bucks short kid."

"What the hell do you mean?"

"I mean what I said!"

You narrowed your eyes at him and began to scoop everything into the bag again. "Hold up!" he placed a hand over top of your's stopping you. You froze staring at his hand before yanking it free.

"I'll cut you in on a deal."

"Oh Yea?" you fixed the gloves on your hands and looked at him annoyed. "Sure! You need it and I'm a good guy kid so listen up!" he kicked his legs back up onto the table. "I heard a few guys who owe me money are robbing a bank in town...I feel it's safe to say they aren't bringing me that money....so maybe.."

You huffed. "You have all these men all these residents struggling to make a living yet you send a 13 year old girl to do your dirty work!"

He smirked and shrugged. "We don't call you Robin Hood for nothing."

"You don't call me that." you turned to walk out as he called after you. "Tomorrow afternoon twelve sharp my dear thief!"

You climbed up the stairs to your small room of an apartment.

It wasn't always like this. You thought back to it as you jumped over the two missing steps in the stair.

You where Ten. No.

Nine. You where nine when your mom died and left you to this dump.

"Hey Lindsay." You knelt down and pet the cat outside your door and looked at the older girl. "What the boss say short stack?"

She got you in to this place she was only six years older than you at this point but with the way she acted you would have guessed she was a 60 year old woman trapped in her body.

"I was a few bucks short..."

"Oh?"

"And I have to Rob a bank to pay the rest off."

"Oh! That'll be fun yet again you're his lovely little eran girl ready to swoop in and save the day!"

You rolled your eyes and stepped inside of the apartment. Lindsay may have been the one to take you under her wind in this place but you quickly took her place as favioret and she despised that "Goodnight linds."

"Night brat."

The door slammed shut causing the wall's to shake and flakes of dry wall to crumble to the floor.

You floped onto the matters on the floor and stared up at the ceiling run through your plan for tomorrow.

The plan? There was no plan. You learned pretty easie that there where never plans. If there where they didn't help they just set a guid line of what SHOULD happen and how it SHOULD go but it's not how it works.

You turned over on your side settling on the fact that you would just have to wing it and hope you got what you needed. And enough of it without being caught by the police or the criminals.

"You have exactly two hours to get down there and decide on what it is you plan on doing."

You peered up at Lindsay from your bed sneering. "I know what I'm doing go away!"

"Then you better get going small fry."

You groaned and sat up. "Fine!"

She looked at you with a smirk as you tied your hair up, threw your coat on over your hoodie and grab you bag before sliding the window open.

"Good luck!" you flipped her off before sliding out the window.

The street outside of the bank showed no sighn that a robbery was to take place. You examined it before stepping inside examining the people inside. Nothing. Just normal people not a single one looked out of place or unusual. You sighed and made your way over to a bench waiting for something to happen. You pulled at the fingers on your gloves pulling them halfway off until you stopped and slid them back on. You repetad that process for for a while until something finally happened.

"EVERYONE ON THE GROUND!" your head shot up and you spotted several men with large bags and guns. Finally.

You noticed A few of the men slid into the vault. You stood up and sprinted over to it but some one caught your hood and pulled you down. "What the he-" a boy around your age in a school boy uniform and domino mask sat infront of you and covered your mouth.

You furrowed your brows at him as he peered past the counter. The gun shots from behind you caused you to jump. "Stay here!" he got up and crawled past you. "Wait!" you turned to follow after him but stoped when another kid crashed through the glass ceiling and took two guys out.

The one who tackled you was gone you. looked across the way to see a girl whispering in one of the guys ears. And another not even paying attention as a guy snuck up behind him. "Shit! Hey kid!" you got up and ran to him and sweept his legs out from under him before pulling your glove off and grabbing the guys writst to disarm him.

The man winced in pain as you held his wrist as green started to spread through his veins all the way from there you held his wrist all the way up his arm. He pulled away in fear holding his arm screaming as it continued to travel through his body like a plague eventually leaving him to collapse to the floor.

You stepped back quickly putting your glove back on before turning to the kid. "You alright?"

He stared at you in awe. "You did that?"

You offered a hand as more gun shots ring out and another man fell to the floor beside you. "Yea...no big deal." He was a smaller boy but looked like he was the same age like the other with same outfit and dark neat hair. "Than-"

He was cut off.

"Ben!" you both turned to the rest of the kids. He stepped forward. "Do I have too?" he stepped forward giving you the chance to get out. You ran and hid behind one of the counters.

The boy turned to where you stood but saw you where gone and sighed walking over to the other kids. "I didn't sign up for this..."

You peered over the counter and stared in shock at the monster that demolished all the men left in the vault. "Holy fuck..." the boy named Ben came out of the vault covered in blood. "Can we go home?"

After the gang of kids let all the hostigas go you stuck behind hoping to slip into the vault then out the back. You got up once you though the other kids where gone and headed over. "How old are you?"

You froze and turned to Ben and one of the kids. "Old enough why?"

"Really how old are you? Because If your as old as I think you are that means your like us...that means dad might wanna meet you."

The other kid said. "I'm 13..."

The boys exchanged a look. "I'm Ben this is my brother klaus...he saw what you did too..."

Now:

You sighed to yourself as you climbed up the step to the large house.

"Why am I even doing this?.." you bit your lip And knocked on the door waiting for an answer.

When the door opened both you and the girl on the other side exchanged a surprised look.

"Y/n!"

"Vanya!... Hi!"

"Hi uh its...it's Good to see you...come in!"

"Sorry about your father..." she waved you off as she shut the door. "Its not a big deal..."

Even as a kid you couldn't talk to vanya. You never knew how or what to say. "Oh well I uh read your book!"

"Oh really?"

"Yea I really liked it actually" she gave a heartless chuckle. "At least someone did..."

"I'm taking it they didn't take it well?"

"They hate me." You looked at her. "I...im Sure that's not-"

"It's fine Y/n, What are you doing here?"

"I heard the news about Reginald obviously so I though I would check in on...on klaus...is he here yet?"

She looked at you as you looked around your eyes landing in the window that lead to the yard. You stared at the copper figure that sat outside.

"I haven't see him yet...but feel free to stay I'll let him know your here if I see him." you continued to state and nodded at her. "Ok...ok thanks..."

17 years ago:

"Absolutely not!"

You jumped at the old man's sudden telling at the boys in front of you.

"Dad c'mon she's just like us! You shod have seen what she did to that guy back at the bank!" klaus held your shoulders presenting you to his and bens father.

"She also dosent have a home." Ben steped in front of you trying to persuade Him even more.

"Number 6! Number 4! I do not appreciate you brining this young lady into our home! And attempting to make her one of us which she is not! And will not be!"

You could see three of the other kids looking at you with looks of what you could only read as disgust from behind him.

You shook yourself free from klaus. "You know what it dosent matter I don't wanna be part of your silly little super hero cult anyways!"

"Y/n!" Ben called after you as you hurried to the front door. "No I'm sorry thank for your efforts ben...and klaus but I've been on my own plenty I'll get over it."

You shut the door behind you and hurried down the street to head back home.

"Hey! Hey wait up!" you glanced behind you and found Ben and klaus running after you.

"What are you two doing?"

"Listen kiddo we feel bad for the situation your in and well everything back there so-"

"We're hoping to be friends." Ben cut klaus off again. "Yea!" klaus wrapped his arm around you as the three of you continued to walk.

You smiled and nodded. "Alright..."

"C'mon lets get something to eat!" Ben grabbed your hand and lead you down the street

born in san jose, california, roman lived with his parents and little sister clarissa until the age of eight, when his mom left them in pursuit of an old flame from high school that she apparently never got over. their dad tried to raise them for maybe… a few months… before realizing he had close to no parenting ability. he and clarissa were sent to live with their rich aunt in wisconsin, and they’ve been there ever since.

listen… their aunt turned out to be a Helicopter Mom to them and it was… super suffocating, especially to roman. she expected so much out of them and tried to force her own dreams onto them but he was just Not Feeling It. he’d always hit her with the “ur not even my real mom” line. despite being a rather intelligent dude with a relatively quick wit, he put the bare minimum into school (especially around the halfway point in high school) … but still lowkey wanted to do well. he was the guy who always found a way to get test answers inconspicuously and found ways to work around the turnitin system, ya feel? tl;dr: smart and capable, but incredibly unmotivated

when he was fifteen, he found out (while eavesdropping on one of his aunt’s phone calls) that his dad had gotten remarried and had twins with his new wife, a girl and a boy. furious over the fact that this was kept a secret from him for two years, he went to rant about it to his sister, who told him that they should just keep pretending like they don’t know. roman suddenly couldn’t hear, and during dinner that night, he brought it up and it was an angsty time.

he has a twin. i don't make the rules, but he has a twin.

he has a big family. the biggest family. we’re talking, his mom has 8 siblings and his dad has 9 and there’s a 10 year age gap between him and his oldest sibling and he loves them all so much

natia is his best friend. i repeat, NATIA IS HIS BEST FRIEND!!!!

he’s also quite close with kiki. Natia and Kiki are the only two that he met before their great space adventure

he wasn't really sure of his sexuality at first. Im terrible at thinking of things off the top of my head. like I sat here for… over an hour trying to think of stuff and dumpster diving through tumblr to find inspo for an answer to this and the answer is basically idk fam, Snowed In? i know Ive never written that for any fandom ever. (thats a terrible answer im sorry!)

After the moon had climbed another hour into the sky, Geoff slapped his little book onto the grass and started taking down the telescope. Donna felt her heart begin to ache. Her time was up. More than anything, she wanted to stay here; better yet, take him with her. Into the TARDIS with the Doctor and show him everything he’d ever dreamed of.

She wished she could’ve asked him before he died. If she knew that she had taken him, then it wasn’t a paradox, it was time flowing exactly as it was meant to.

And that made it all right, didn’t it?

Heart in her throat, Donna looked up at her father, placed her hand on his arm. He looked down at her, blue eyes open and honest.

And she thought of the Doctor.

He had been so anxious, a tremulous veil of fear in his eyes when he suggested he bring her to her father, quiet voice when he wondered if she was up to it. He was a Time Lord, the guardian of everything temporal. She had seen him battle with himself over whether or not he could step in and change history, and the agony it caused him when he knew that he couldn’t, that he was the cause of tragedy.

Thinking on it, his behaviour today had made it all too clear that this event, seeing her father one last time and settling her own unnecessary insecurities, probably wasn’t meant to happen. And she wasn’t stupid enough to believe that her wanting it could change that.

Donna released a deep, shaking breath and let it go.

This bit is the climax of my Doctor Who fic Fathers and Daughters. The entire story centers on and builds up to this moment: Donna tempted by the innate human desire to save someone she loves, to spend every last second she can with her late father even if it means breaking the laws of time… and then accepting her father’s death and letting him go. Eight years later and I still love this fic and this moment.

Karen’s laugh pealed through the office even before Matt reached the door. “Why would I? I don’t have a gaggle of nieces sitting me through kids’ movies on my days off.”

“Excuses!” proclaimed Foggy. "One does not need half-pint girls to enjoy a Disney film, anymore than one needs the full-grown ones to cry through a chick flick. I am a Renaissance man– I enjoy all things.“

The door creaked when Matt pushed through the frame, his hands occupied by his briefcase and cane. "Hey Michelangelo, I thought you were going to WD-40 the hinges?”

“Good morning to you too, Raphael.” Foggy’s grin was evident in his voice. "Decided not to. How else are we going to be able to tell when we have clients?“

"We could get a bell. Like normal people,” said Karen.

“Shush, April.”

Karen mouthed April?, her breath only soft enough that Matt could hear, and he nodded at her. "Ninja Turtles.“

Her incredulity hung in the air. "Foggy, are you six?”

“Damn, you caught me. I’m actually two kids stacked on top of each other in a trenchcoat.” Something whipped across the room. A balled-up piece of paper, it sounded like.

“So I’m glad everybody had coffee today,” Matt interjected. "Don’t we have work to do? Or some other… form of adulting?“

"Who called the fun police? Jeez mom, we’ll get right on it.” Foggy was halfway back to his office before he stopped, stuck his head back out the door. "Actually, dude, someone was just by for you. A lady caller.“ Matt could practically hear his eyebrows waggling suggestively.

"Oh– Foggy, that’s gross.”

“What? I happen to find nuns attractive.”

“It was Sister Maggie,” Karen supplied. Of course she’d find Foggy’s comment gross; she knew what he did not. Matt wondered if that counted as a secret. Difficult to bring up. Hey, remember how I didn’t have a mom? Turns out she was the nun who raised me in the orphanage…

O_O Your answer to my last question/headcanon thing just made me realize something I had not previously considered: Inko and Enji's relationship. PLEASE TELL ME MORE!! Cause they WOULD sorta be like siblings in a way since they've known each other their entire lives (and because Inko 'beats him up' on a semi-regular basis from the ages of 4-15). Please oh please tell me more about totally-the-big-sister-even-though-'we're-the-SAME-AGE-INKO-GOD!!'-Inko. *chinhands* Please tell me more. (:

HELL YEAH IM HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE BEAUTIFUL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE KIDS, TAKE UR SEAT ANON, I hope u and the world are ready for another session of “Novel half thinks half bullshits her way through this AU, feat. The incredible conversations me and @guardianlioness have had about Ageswap since it’s creation last year”

So, like, I talk a lot about the fact that Enji develops really well in the au, and how he used to be a jerk but he’s mellowed on combined effort from his class and his dad, all that stuff, and I joke a lot that he’s the Bakugou of the AU bc he’s grumpy af, but it’s time to actually focus on that pre-development stuff when he actually is a huge goddamn ass within Ageswap bc it’s relevant. And when I say he’s an ass, I do mean it. Bear with me for a little, Anon.

Within the AU, Shouto is an okay dad. He teaches his son to walk, to read, to write, shows him that quirk marriage is wrong and inspired him to be a hero. But he’s also terribly emotionally withdrawn, just as a person - he struggles showing his feelings and expressing them for others (I don’t know if we’re keeping it, but one of our old conversations suggests he might have had a wife that died, which also factors in), and that all hit Enji a lot. I’m not saying he doesn’t show his son that he loves him, but it’s not enough. The little things don’t matter when you don’t know what they are. Enji knows his father loves him, but his relationship with his dad is strained to it’s near limit when he goes into UA. Enji’s main goal for being a hero is bc its, well, his dream - to save people, to be incredible like his old man, yeah. But at the time he entered, he has a second goal - to surpass Deku, be the number one, and get a little bit of recognition from his old man.

But things start young, you know? So here’s the deal on their relationship;

There was a hole in Ageswap that I’m patching up at this exact moment so bear with me again; a lot of Inko and Enji’s childhoods don’t match up, as in they didn’t much know each other until a bit later in their lives. The reason is due to the fact that when Izuku took Inko in, he wasn’t in the same area as Todoroki when Enji was born, and at that time it’s not really like they could gallivant way off to see each other bc woah, we both have babies to take care of now on top of our hero duties! Incredible!

Inko calls the Canon 1-A heroes her aunts and uncles, because they’d video chat or visit Deku a lot while he was raising Inko. Enji also loosely regards canon 1-A as his surrogate family in the same way, because they visited Todoroki too. He and Inko knew each other through copious video chats and word of mouth, but Deku doesn’t move to a closer area to them until Inko is about 4, and they don’t meet until Deku has started teaching when Inko is about 6. (Enji, at these times, is 3 and 5 respectively)

Inko and Enji meet just after Enji’s birthday, a bit over halfway through summer. Inko is already used to calling Tensei her cousin (tho I suppose technically he’d be one of her uncles, but whatever) and so, she has no qualms about calling Enji her cousin. Enji…. Has a lot more reservations. He rejects the cousin title pretty harshly for a five-year-old, and it’s a good thing Inko has always been an observant young thing bc she takes it in stride and resolves to try again when he’ll be more comfortable with it. She still calls Shouto her uncle, of course.

But regardless, their relationship is pretty okay. He doesn’t spar with Inko until she’s seven, which is when she kicks his ass for the first time, and that’s more or less when Enji’s respect for her rises to the same level of respect he has for Deku, approximately. In fairness, Enji does, on some level, register Inko as his cousin - he’s just got trouble admitting that family tie to himself out loud. He respects her, she sees him as family, and Inko has to deal with the clueless duo of Izuku and Toshinori anyway, it’s not like waiting for Enji is really that much of a challenge. His own pace and all that. It helps that Inko is super straight with everyone, bc misunderstandings suck.

They poke fun at each other a lot tho, and Enji is noticably comfortable around Inko. It’s kind of curious. Inko’ll tease him about training, Enji will snark back that he could flip her over his head now that he’s here in highschool with her, Inko will laugh and stage whisper to the class that he definitely can’t, it’s great. They don’t call each other family (yet), but there’s an ease between them that you don’t get to see all that often that says they’re more than friends or aquaintances, you know? Inko is one of the few people Enji can really tolerate at the start of the “series”, so to speak, mostly because they’re used to each other. They’re also not afraid to roughhouse a bit, like gentle shoves and pushes, elbows to the gut and all that. Enji does spar with Inko semi-regularly, but usually it’s a part of a lesson rather than some free spar where they go until someone can’t anymore, and it decreases as they grow older. The reason mostly being that their schedules are just, too busy now.

And, like, he’ll never admit it, but Enji is completely and utterly ready to throw down for Inko if she needs it. Which she never will bc she can handle herself, but he’s still ready. Inko is also always ready to throw down if people mess with Enji, but they usually don’t for many, many reasons. Mostly because he looks scary af without trying. But still - they look damn out for each other. They’re family, lack of word between them be damned.

When the dorms roll around, Inko becomes an honorary Class 1-A member and also the surrogate big sis to everyone. Enji, like Bakugou in canon, is mellowing out now. Things are easier for him. Inko is able to tease him and hang out with him more, Enji is able to casually chill with Inko and roll his eyes with her over dumb class antics (when he isn’t in the midst of it), it’s great. And he’s not exempt from the big sister treatment either; she drags him off to rest after class when he’s overexerted himself with Toshinori, teases him with her mysterious collection of pictures from when they were young, helps him with his work if he actually needs it (which he usually doesn’t, he’s a smart guy). Enji has already been subject to this in the past, of course, because that’s just how Inko is, but now it happens even more, because they’re all on campus anyway and why wait in the 1-A dorm building or in her actual room when she can look after her dumb family who keeps training too hard? Still, it isn’t until around their second year that things change again, in a good way.

Because the one who breaks that barrier between them, and calls the other “cousin”? It’s not Inko, it’s all Enji.

He does it offhandedly - they’re discussing something and he casually calls her “cousin” partway through. It catches her so off guard she freezes for a moment before rolling with it, but Deku and Shouto heard it all, and they’re smiling. It’s a pretty big step between them, since Enji has been denying the cousin card for about a decade at that point, it makes them happy to see. Outwardly and inwardly, nothing changes. But it shows that Enji’s willing to accept that relationship now, that he’s leaving himself open to his friends and family and accepting them as long as they’ll accept him. Inko’s honored, and more than happy to start calling him cousin after all this time. Sure she’s more like the big sister, but this is how the two of them roll, you know? It doesn’t change how much they care about each other.

And there you have it, Anon! Some insights into the complicated relationship between Inko and Enji, built entirely around childhood respect, bribery/teasing blackmail through adorable photos from their childhood, and Inko’s undefeatable Mom for All habits.

My gut feeling tells me it should be placed under other comprehensive income, but the solution to my homework problem says it should be under non-operating expense. Why is that? Shouldn't it be under other comprehensive income because the company doesn't really have control over it? I think it is under non-operating because it's REALIZED. Is that enough of a reason? Thanks.

Just before I left I crept into her room and erased my number from her phone. Then it occurred to me that she had an inbox full of text messages from my number so I had to re-creep into her room and stealthily delete all of those, thus ‘deleting’ myself from her life.

I left and never heard from her again (although she did have my email address). That was about 17 years ago and I still feel very shitty about what I did.

Gods I can barely think about it. Not even because I’m pissed or ashamed at myself but because of just that was, be it myself doing it or anyone else. This was probably an old lady barely able to make ends meet, trying to do whatever job she could…probably never wanted to hurt a soul. Then comes along some shitty rich kid who does something completely fucking douchey like ruin a mop job. Sure, not the most monstrous thing at face value, but put all of what I just said together and…fucking hell. That is dickish. I feel bad about it to this day; even writing about it is hard.

17. I refused help to a man who needed it.

I was walking out of a 7-11 gas station a couple of blocks from my apartment building late at night (no one else was there). An old, run down car pulled in and the driver rolled down the window and called over to me. He was clearly very upset and looked like he’d been crying. He told me he just found out his daughter had been in an accident and had been airlifted to a hospital about an hour away. He was trying to get there, but he was almost out of gas and didn’t have any money on him. He pleaded with me for anything I could spare. I told him I didn’t have any cash on me, and I went on my way.

That was a lie. I had plenty of cash on me, and regardless I had my cards on me with which I could’ve bought him some gas. I got about halfway home, thought about what I’d just done, and went back, but he was already gone. I went home where my friends were drinking, and I just sat on the couch and didn’t talk to anyone the rest of the night.

What the hell was wrong with me? Was I so jaded from living in a big city with panhandlers regularly asking for money that I couldn’t recognize when someone might genuinely need my help? The emotion on that man’s face was real, as was the pain in his voice. I don’t think I’ll forget the desperate please! as long as I live. Was it really that big of a risk to give this guy $20? Would that loss to me if he was some Broadway-class con man really be that bad when weighed against the possibility that I just let down a father going through the worst moment of his life?

What if his daughter didn’t make it, and he didn’t get to see her before she passed because some cynical asshole at the gas station couldn’t spare a few dollars? I hope that wasn’t the case, that his daughter was fine, and that someone with more compassion was able to help him…or better yet, that there was no accident and he was playing me. Thinking about the alternative has kept me awake at night on multiple occasions.

Ever since then I have tried to keep a more open mind and give people the benefit of the doubt, so that the next time I’m in a position to help someone who needs me, I won’t fail them.

I don’t think the guy wanted money for drugs. Anyone who works with drug addicts like I do would know that a true addict wouldn’t have any car, no matter how crap, that could be sold for even a few bucks that could get them another fix. Also, my neighborhood wasn’t anywhere near the drug corners, and he didn’t have the physical indicators.

I didn’t realize what I had said until months later. It’s been years and I still think back on that moment. I could have been there for her but I was just a selfish piece of shit.

Stopped the car briefly and saw in my rear-view that it was flapping around until it just sat still in the middle of the road, probably trying to recover from the beating it had taken. I considered stepping out of my car and move the poor bird to the side of the road so it wouldn’t get hit by another car but remembered that flock-living birds can get “expelled” by their flock if they carry an unknown scent. I also figured that this was far off in the countryside in Sweden, and the likelihood of another car passing by anytime soon was close to none.

I was on my way back home about an hour and a half later. My meeting with the client had been a huge success so I was in a great mood, singing to the radio and was probably driving a bit over the limit. I drove up a small crest and on the other side was the same fucking bird sitting in the middle of the road exactly where I left it, I had totally forgotten about it! It was turned towards me and I swear it looked me straight in the eyes, silently cursing at me in its chirpy bird-language as I inevitably drove straight over it for the second time…

Once again I could see the bird being slammed to the asphalt numerous times in my rearview-mirror before disappearing down the slope into the woods.

I’m entirely convinced this bird will dedicate his afterlife to haunting me from the other side for the rest of my life…

29. Girlfriends mom tried killing herself, so I went home to drink.

Was watching with my then girlfriend. Lots of bad things happened that night that we were unaware of, and in the end her dad stormed into our room shouting get upstairs now and call 999. Her mum tried to commit suicide by an overdose on something I’m not aware of. Her mum/dad goes off in the ambulance and my ex is hysterical, crying panicking etc. My uncle at the time also tried to hang himself a few nights previous…. I used this as an excuse to leave my ex for the night, go home and get drunk. I will never forget the tears I left my ex in, while I went home to drink.

Met a girl through and online game that was a legitimate train wreck. Sending nudes to basically everyone at the age of 12, smoked and drank on the daily at 13 or 14, did coke and speed at 15. Girl was a major bitch and a manipulator to basically everyone, and had no one who cared about her as a result. I tried being the first.

As I said, she ended up being a massive manipulator and one of the only people I’ve ever branded as irredeemable. Checked in on her some years later, and asked her how she’s been. Said she was probably gonna kill herself, to which I replied Yeah, you go do that, and then blocked her.

Is that fucked-up? Yeah. Do I care if she actually killed herself? Can’t say that I do.
