Day 22 • 100 Days of Productivity
spent 5 hours studying today (with breaks don’t worry) and my back is killing me!
i was originally working at the library, my mom is a reference librarian and took me to work with her, but the chairs were absolutely destroying my back so i went to a coffee shop for the last 2 1/2 hours. i got through the rest of chapter 2 and into chapter 3 of my western civ class.
chapter 3 is the ancient greeks and i had a question that im supposed to answer at the beginning and then come back to once i finish the chapter but like… not only was i obsessed with ancient civilizations as a kid, i am LITERALLY a hellenic polytheist so i know a lot about ancient greece and i already knew exactly what the answer was. i actually ran out of characters in my answer because i just kept explaining the context of everything lol.
anyway, i just have to finish chapter 3 tomorrow and then i’m done for the weekend!

Hmmm two semi-related questions that have been rattling around in my brain for awhile:
1) Do you think there is much of a BDSM/kink culture on Azeroth?
and
2) Many a joke and comment have been made about Jaina and her Many Suppressed Kinks, but why *is* she so repressed?
WHAT A DELIGHTFULLY MEATY ASK THANK U.
cut for holy shit yeah we gonna talk sex (also I keep talking super strongly about things but this is all personal opinion--founded in canon but nevertheless, if you want to write Jaina otherwise be my guest)
1-Is there a kink culture on Azeroth? Glad you phrased it like this, because I don't think there's anything so organized.
Kink, sure. We're all primates (.........or something) and humanoids come preinstalled with a Thing about power and hierarchy, and some of us are going to turn that sexual. Every society on Azeroth has some form of kink, both in the sense of bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism stuff, and in the sense that there's things that are taboo and edgy and so therefore super hot to some subset of individuals.
Kink culture? Terminology and munches and people passing down advice about how to slap so you don't hurt someone? Less so.
Definitely there are cultures where BDSM (especially the D/s and S/M sides) is more socially acceptable than among Azeroth humans, I am looking specifically at orcs, you cannot tell me that a culture with honor duels is not also into consensually beating the shit out of each other during sex. There are peoples who are much more into polyamory and swinging, and who are super into high protocol D/s stuff (hello collective quel'dorei fanon to justify Jaina/Sylvanas/Dark Rangers but also I don't care it's great).
But see previous ask about monsterfucking, it's all so racialized that unless you are that race it's not talked about, and if you are, it's not super deviant because what, an orc likes CBT? Not a surprise. The problem here is how much does the 'deviance' aspect matter in kink? Western civ is so sex-negative that we've stigmatized basically everything that isn't cishet PIV missionary style, so how much of what we consider kink wouldn't be erotic if it was normalized? Idk this isn't my field but it is relevant here.
At any rate: I'm not because I'm happily married but I could reach out to a kink subculture and find a compatible partner who lives in my area on like...several different platforms. And one way or another I could have done this 60 years ago too (possibly more! I just know through the 60s). This bit I don't think exists on Azeroth, I don't think there's that level of organization and communication.
Which leads nicely to:
2-Why is Jaina so repressed?
Not a simple answer, even a joking one, just a bunch of interlocked issues.
First: Kul Tiran is based off Britain, and it's specifically based off a sort of temporally variable Britain from approximately 1485-1850 so like, I am free to pick the most deranged bits of British social norms and waltz off. Jaina, due to school, probably didn't get a sex talk from her parents but rather from someone in Dalaran (awk) or more likely, the library. She's not from a sex positive culture. She's not even from a sex neutral culture. She's from a country where "lie back and think of England Kul Tiras" is complete sex advice, and then she went off to school.
Second: Not that school isn't a GREAT area to learn about sex but we have no evidence that Jaina was a social butterfly and a lot of evidence that she wasn't, and then she goes directly from Dalaran into war.
And then she's Lady of Theramore and then she's on the Council of Six and then there's whatever the fuck she's doing during Legion, and while there are periods in here where her life sucks LESS and it is completely VIABLE for her to do some sexual exploration but it's also like. These aren't periods where she's going to be going "ah yes I want to interrogate the bit where my deepest desire is for Thrall to rail me hard, pinning my hands to a wall, not letting me go even if I ask", among other reasons because she's not around anyone who is both definitely sex positive AND a social equal who she's interested in learning from.
Related, three: Boy does she need therapy.
Kink means vulnerability, and Jaina's a switch but she's more of a sub, and being a sub means a lot of vulnerability, and letting yourself be vulnerable. I cannot think of something Jaina is less likely to want, especially after Theramore.
In order for Jaina to explore her kinks, she needs to acknowledge that she has them and--ideally--stop shaming herself for having them, which means making peace with the bit where she really, really wants someone to call her names and make her crawl and slap her around. Which is a lot for anyone to process, really, never mind how much Jaina specifically is an advocate for equality and compassion. And she wants to be hurt in bed?
(Which, to be clear, 2 things: One, because I think introspection is necessary for Jaina to realize her kinks does not mean it's a requirement for others, just that Jaina overthinks everything so she'll overthink this too. Two, I obviously don't see a contradiction between wanting equality in 'real life' and roleplay in the bedroom. I think those go together fine and I am fervently committed to "Jaina is a kinky bastard" headcanon. Jaina has a problem with it.)
So to the extent that she acknowledges at all that she's into Some Shit, she views it as a problem, a flaw to be expunged. Proper, good ladies don't want to be held down and teased until they're crying and begging for something more and then left like that--
Four: With who.
Jaina's canonical relationships (and the only two I'm letting her have in TPtMB (except possibly one night stands?) because I'm evil) are Arthas and Kalec.
If you expect me to think that Kalec does anything but missionary in bed with the lights off, you're wrong.
Furthermore Kalec is not the sort of person to encourage Jaina to explore that inner darkness. He's going to make sure she's enjoying herself! He's not shorting her in bed. He's just not after anything else, he doesn't think she should be after anything else, he genuinely doesn't think she is after anything else, in short: It's vanilla sex only here and no discussion of any alternatives ever comes up.
From Arthas: She's late teens and blonde haired, blue eyed, curves everywhere, a princess in everything but title, there is absolutely no way Arthas does a single thing she doesn't want. None. There is zero way that Arthas Menethil, paladin, who, yes, is going to turn into something else, expose the ugly parts until there's nothing left but who isn't there yet, who's the golden prince, who's joining Kul Tiras to Lordaeron and it's a love match but it's political--
They also do missionary in bed but the lights are on this time.
In sum:
Repressed cultural background where you Do Not Talk About Sex
Went to school as the world's biggest nerd, then it's been nearly nonstop crises for 25 years
Thinks that self-reflection is a spell, has never stopped to wonder if maybe the fantasies are ethically neutral
Dated only men who were boring in bed.

Margaret Louise Smith, 25 (USA 1971)
When New York legalized abortion on demand, the results were catastrophic. People from across the country were lured by the abortion industry and persuaded to undergo the deadly procedure. One of many killed by early legalized abortion was Margaret Smith.
Margaret Louise Smith was 25 when she was exposed to the rubella virus, also known as German measles. Afraid of the effects that the virus may have had on her baby, she left her home in Michigan and came to New York.
Infamous abortionist Jesse Ketchum had a criminal career selling illegal abortions for quite some time before New York legalized them. He then went to Buffalo, where he was allowed to endanger women without as much fear of legal consequences.
Ketchum performed a vaginal hysterotomy on Margaret at 10:30 A.M. on June 16, 1971. This method was perfectly legal, but had an especially high maternal mortality rate. Margaret was left almost entirely unattended until 2:00 P.M. when her boyfriend Billy Ray Ellenburg found her unresponsive. He begged Ketchum and his staff to do something until someone finally called the paramedics.
Margaret was finally taken to the hospital that was just across the street, but she was declared dead on arrival. Her autopsy showed that Ketchum had lacerated her uterus and her cervix before leaving her unmonitored, causing her to bleed to death.
Margaret’s parents sued for $350,000 and Ketchum was charged with criminally negligent homicide. Until his case went to trial, he continued his career as an abortionist and killed Carole Schaner in a strikingly similar way only four months later.

Sure, you could pay to read the New York Times, or take an extra minute out of your day to blow through their paywall, but for free[*] you could be getting the good information about John Stuart Mill that was just dropped at johnpistelli.com. There’s plenty of nuance in his almost legalistic prose, I promise you, as he heroically tried to synthesize the Enlightenment with Romanticism. An excerpt from my new essay:
How is the infrastructure of free speech to be erected and sustained? Through a proper education, one in which students are allowed to hear a diversity of views from those who hold them. Citing precedents in intellectual history from the Platonic dialogues (in which philosophy is conducted as an argument between multiple personae) to the legal practice of Cicero (who learned the opposing counsel’s case better than his own) to the process of Catholic canonization (which invites the “devil’s advocate” to speak against the candidate for sainthood), Mill argues that students must be prepared to defend their own positions against counterarguments they themselves are able to reconstruct from the inside: “He who knows only his own side of the case, knows little of that.” Otherwise, people will hold even their own opinions lazily, unfeelingly, and without really knowing why—a state of intellectual torpor that bodes ill for the polity.
Precisely the situation in which once-august and now-bathetic institutions like the Times sadly find themselves.
I don’t even know why I started reading or rereading On Liberty the other day, nor do I remember if I’d ever read the whole thing before or just excerpts in college. I do remember reading all of The Subjection of Women in a Western Civ class, and then answering a final essay exam question in the same class where I was invited to imagine and write out a debate between Mill and Hitler. I recall having some fun with the stage directions: “Mill lifts both eyebrows in startled alarm” and the like. The professor would no doubt be fired today.
Anyway, I think I went back to Mill because George Bernard Shaw had me wanting to revisit the Victorian sages (and indeed to expand my knowledge of some of them beyond the Norton Anthology)—nothing to do with the news. But current hegemonic left-liberalism has of course abandoned Mill’s liberal ideal of free speech without even seeming to understand its rationale—they appear as well to be in the process of abandoning any theory of mind whatever, ironically returning to a fully infantile state—so On Liberty remains pertinent.
Two things I didn’t get to discuss in my essay since I try to keep these things short enough for Goodreads:
1. Mill was a Malthusian who thought the state should seize control of breeding. He disfavored “a woman’s right to choose,” to use an obsolete phrase from my youth, to opposite effect as does the religious right today: he might not outlaw but mandate abortion, for generally eugenic reasons. This seems to me inconsistent with the broad principles of On Liberty and premised on a flawed and zero-sum idea of humanity’s relationship to nature and economics.
2. I quoted but did not elaborate on Mill’s beguiling sentence, “It may be better to be a John Knox than an Alcibiades, but it is better to be a Pericles than either.” I first encountered it before I ever read any Mill at all as the epigraph to James Wood’s paralyzingly eloquent essay against Thomas More, “A Man for One Season.” Wood’s idea is that More was no better than Knox, a religious sectarian, and therefore not a fit Periclean hero for a liberal, secular society. But is it really better to be John Knox than Alcibiades? It’s a case of two extremes, an unenviable choice. I confess I haven’t read any Thucydides since my first year of college, but I do recollect that Athens’s golden boy (and Socrates’s boy-toy) was an unreliable man, to say the least. Still, would I want to found Scottish Presbyterianism or hang out with Socrates? I swing sexually the other direction, but Al seems to have enjoyed primarily female company anyway, among all his wild and dangerous political intrigues. Wherever you come down, it’s certainly a thought-provoking sentence.

So, this took a bit to synthesize in my brain as it's a cumulation of my Western Civ classes from college (back in the late 1990s), the books The Dawn of Everything, The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt, The History of Ancient Rome, The History of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Mesopotamia: Life in the Cradle of Civilization, and a few podcasts about the development of monotheism in the Levant. I did go to Wikipedia for dates and specific events as I didn't want to dig through those (quite hefty) books for them.
The thing that started it was the claim that Israel had a claim to the land that was being exterminated of those who are Palestinian because they were there first and my brain went 'but, no...Egypt, Assyria, Persia, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, the Ottoman Empire, Crusades (briefly), back to Ottoman Empire, Palestine after WWI because the Ottoman Empire was on the wrong side of the conflict, then Israel after WWII'. So, here is the history of the area up to Greece in outline form. (sort of...tumblr doesn't seem to like outlines and nested lists)
I. Israel and Judah Emerged During the Late Iron Age
A. Israel c 900 BCE (Ahab first king mentioned in archaeological record)
B. Judah c 850BCE (Hezekiah first undisputed king in archaeological record)
C. Israel destroyed c 720 BCE by Neo-Assyrian Empire
D. Judah a client state first of Neo-Assyria, then of Neo-Babylon
E. Jewish revolts led to destruction of Judah in 586 BCE under Nebuchadnezzar
F. Exile ended with the fall of Babylon c 538 BCE (Edict of Cyrus)
1. Encouraged Jews to return to Judah (Persian province of Yehud)
2. Beginning of 2nd Temple period
3. Historicity shows a trickle over decades rather than single mass event
4. Still a vassal state of the Persian Empire
II. Prior History of Area (Bronze Age and Early Iron Age)
A. No archaeological evidence of Saul, David, and Solomon (c 11c BCE)
B. First mention of Israel in the archaeological record c 1208 BCE
1. Merneptah Stele (Israel is laid waste and his seed is no more)
2. One of 4 stele to mention ancient Israel by name
3. Record of Egypt conquest of ancient Libya, the Sea People, and allies in Canaan
4. Translation of Israel is disputed, implies semi- or fully nomadic people
C. Remains with a lack of pork remains and decorated pottery begin to emerge c 1200 BCE
1. Central hill country of Canaan
2. No signs of violent invasion or infiltration
3. Lifestyle revolution set in opposition to Philistine/Canaanite customs
4. Small villages (populations of 300-400 people)
III. Early to Middle Bronze Age
A. Ghassulian people begin to settle (c 4400-3500 BCE)
B. Ebla people incorporated into Akkadian Empire by Sargon the Great (c 2300 BCE)
C. Amorites referenced in Sumerian records of the time
D. Collapse of the Akkadian Empire in 2154 BCE saw movement of people from Zagros Mountains (pottery records)
E. Proto-Canaanite cities of ‘En Esur and Meggido arose
F. Trade with northern Asia Minor and Mesopotamia evident
G. Cities abandoned (c 2000 BCE)
J. Earliest bona fide Egyptian campaign c 1862 BCE
K. Canaanites (Hyksos) invaded eastern Nile Delta 1650 BCE
L. Egypt controls Canaan and Phoenicia beginning c 1479 BCE
1. Some waxing and waning due to rebellions by Hitites/Canaanites
2. Hittites defeated Egypt c 1275 BCE
So, based on the ancient records, the country that is still extant that has a claim on the land is Egypt or Iran.

Back to the "start" [early days 2009-2012]
My college story [pre-diagnosis]: In 2009, I graduated high school. Transfered into the local community college for biology.
Fall 2009: The first semester went great, though I struggled with the History of Western Civilization. That's probably because of unmedicated ADHD and having listened to Western Civ most of my HS experience. That's also when I started reading Glee fanfiction, so I'd often read that instead of study.
Spring 2010: much the same. The vicious combo of Chemistry I, Calc I, and Intro to Literature kicked my butt. However, Western Civ II was amazing.
Summer 2010 [diaster begins] My advisor said the only way I could graduate on time was if I took Calc II and Chem II in the summer. BOY, she screwed me over in so many ways. A D in the Chem II -4 credits [transferable, but have to retake; and F in Calc II -5 credits]. Tanked my GPA and was a sign of something more going on.
I couldn't remember things, I was tired in the morning, and alert in the evening. I could eat a lot without gaining weight, but still feel hungry and awful. I was both high-energy and exhausted. Later, my first Endocrinlogist and my high school anatomy teacher described it as being on uppers and downers at the same time. Or having the gas and break going and spinning in circles burning yourself out.
I continued on with school because I didn't really know what was happening. I was barely 19 and have since learned that both ADHD and LADA can cause issues with mind and body communication.
Fall 2010: I took Bio, Anatomy, U.S. History, and Intro to Psych.
The time of day really impacted how I was doing. I got an A on my first Bio exam at 9 am. Then I proceeded to fail the next 3. U.S. History I couldn't retain the information, disliked it in the first place, and also had it earlier in the day. Anatomy and Psychology were later in the day so I could pass them.
In late October 2010 my dad noticed I had a puffy neck when going to visit relatives. He told my mom to take me to the ER. I had am EKG that had showed concerning results especially witj my heart rate being above 160. They told me I needed to see an endocrinologist. My dad set me up with his. The worst bedside manner known [well probably not] to man, but he saved my life.
Because I could get medicated, I withdrew from two of my classes for medical reasons and managed to pass the other two [no idea how tbh]. I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease with a severe Hyperthyroid and Goider that was impacting my breathing. I was on drugs every 2-4 hours. Then I got my blood drawn, and right before I drank a juice box because it's all I had at the time.
My blood sugar was 512 mg/dl, and my A1C was 11. Type 2 runs in my family, so there was an assumption that that's what it was. I was put on novolog 70/30, but two weeks later, he sent me for antibody testing. 10 days before US Thanksgiving 2011, I got the call that I am Type 1 insulin dependent.
I was immediately taken off the 70/30 and placed on Levemir and Novolog. Relatively high doses as having two autoimmune conditions at once on fire seemed to make my body more resistant to go below 170 ever.
My then endocrinologist said my thyroid was making everything worse, including my airway. Radio active iodine wouldn't shrink it enough. So, I was scheduled for a total Thyroidectomy on April 6, 2011.
Ironically, the area I struggled the most to learn while sick was anatomy, I had to withdraw from Anatomy II 3 different times while in treatment [and once post].
Following the total Thyroidectomy on April 6, 2011, my blood sugar stabilized with low imsulin. I was slowly lowered from 20 levemir twice a day, down to 18 levemir once a day. I was only taking 1-2 units per meal where, before, I was taking 5-7 depending on the carbs. My ratio was still 1:15. My endocrinologist wanted to start me on this "new GLP-1 RA, Victoza" and said he suspected I am LADA, not just Type 1. This means I might have a little pancreatic function left, and using Victoza might foster that insulin sustaining. Taking Victoza allowed me to stop taking fast acting insulin and my A1C was still in the non diabetic range.
I returned in Fall 2011 to continue my degree and was doing really well, primarily getting A's with an occasional B. Unfortunately, with the F and D on my final grades, my GPA was on the lower side, so I had to do really well to get that up. I was very lucky that I was in a guaranteed admissions program from high school that lowered the requirements [though they'd gone up in that time]. So I just needed more than a 2.75 [non-program needed 3.0].
I was able to get it up to 3.93 before I graduated and was able to transfer to a 4-year college.
To be continued...

3544-Western Civ Paper 8
Tumblr media
Two very distinct ways to write papers: 1) read research thoroughly and arrange the notes into an argument and 2) create an argument and find research to backup whatever stuff you say. One is more time-efficient than the other, so, sadly, it’s the one that gets followed.

Day 65 • 100 Days of Productivity
I don't have any pictures today because everything has been digital quizzes and research and I was working in bed instead of at my desk lol. Anyway, did my chapter 15 reading for modern western civ. It's about the 30 Years War and the rise of absolutism in Europe, which is the start of my favorite period of time to study. I've gotten some work done on Assignment 1 for history too. I'm writing about the difference between absolutism in France under Louis XIV versus enlightened absolutism in Prussia under Frederick the Great. I'm having so much fun researching it!
I also did my personal training session and my balance is completely fucked up right now. My POTS is also acting up so I'm struggling to catch my breath, have chest pain, my heart rate is high, and i'm very dizzy and lightheaded. I haven't fainted yet this week, which is good, but I've come close. But don't worry, I know what is my daily symptoms vs a stroke or other heart issue, and I've had a heart echo, EKG, and blood tests to make sure my heart can in fact function. I just have a moderate case of POTS lol.
Going to get a head start on my notes for next week in macroeconomics and history now!
🎶 hold me tight or don't - fall out boy 🎶

First impressions of classes & professors
1 - Macroeconomic Principles
Class: I’m nervous! I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to economics and none of it has ever made any sense to me, so we’ll see how this goes
Professor: This guy is terrifying. Like he’s nice and somewhere in the Millennial age range but. Unlike me, he Knows what he’s talking about. He also has deep black eyes.
2 - U.S. History II
Class: Little intimidated by all the writing, wish the ladies I’m sitting next to would realise this isn’t high school and whispering and giggling to each other wasn’t cool then and isn’t cool now. But it’s a history class, I got this.
Professor: This is what happens when you combine an inflatable tube man and a muppet. Very bouncy and excited to be here. A little too much for 8am but he’s interesting.
3 - Western Civilisations II
Class: I love when classes just dive right in, especially history classes. We started with the Witch Crazes. I’m so pumped.
Professor: I actually have had this professor before, I’m sure you can guess which class given that this is Western Civ. 2. However, that semester the mask mandate was still in place and this is first time I’ve seen his face. His mustache very much gives Lorax but love him so it’s gonna be great.
4 - Technology in the Classroom
Class: There’s a lot of assignments. Like. A lot of assignments. More than any other class. I’m just hoping none of them are too hard
Professor: The only woman professor I have
:( Also both my education class are online (grrrr) so it’s hard to get a read but she’s uses Bitmoji’ s in her introduction. She actually developed a technology education program so hey watch out yo.
5 - Multicultural Education
Class: One of the assignments is literally a collage. We have word clouds as assignments. I’m curious to know more.
Professor: Seems strict! Great! (Sarcasm) I don’t do well in environments with strict authority figures! I’m sure we’re going to never talk to each other.
