I finished something (!!) based on an old Zutara week prompt, and i wanted to post it on AO3, but i had ... problems with that idea. Mainly because this is a sort-of prequel to a longer, much more complicated AU that i've written maybe 0.05% of, 90% of which is just unnecessary backstory and details about minor characters that will probably never even be mentioned. The other problem is, while this is definitely about Zuko and Katara, they don't know they're Zuko and Katara (said AU involves Dai Li brainwashing, of course), so it's effectively a story about two random people living in the Earth Kingdom.

In the end, i decided posting on Tumblr was the middle ground between my very sensible objections and my craving for displaying my creative works and (ideally) getting showered with praise for my writing prowess.

prompt: first kiss

Tiarniq is sixteen, and has never been kissed.

It’s fine. She knows she’s young, that she has plenty of time, that many women don’t get their first kiss until they’re older. And while she’s annoyed by the sly looks and smug comments she gets from the other girls, when they’re gossiping about boyfriends and dates and kisses that lead to things they giggle instead of talk about, it doesn’t really bother her that she doesn’t have any stories to share. She’s too young to get married, and she can’t imagine wanting to talk about a boyfriend like the other girls do, at least not in so much detail.

But the thing is, there’s a boy.

A tall, strong, determined boy who’s light on his feet and good with a sword, who knows both those things but never boasts about them, who never, ever gives up.

An obnoxious, irritating, hot-tempered boy who won’t let her leave the estate on her own even though he knows she can take care of herself (but she doesn’t actually mind), who can’t tell a joke without ruining it (she laughs anyway half the time) or make tea without scalding it (he keeps trying), who gets mad at her sometimes when she’s just trying to help and she has no idea why (she keeps trying).

A kind, honest, beautiful boy with golden eyes and gentle hands and a quiet way who helps without being asked and never pushes her to talk if she doesn’t want to and is probably the best friend she’s ever had.

Tiarniq isn’t sure when she first started wanting Ryuji to kiss her, but she does, and it’s becoming a problem. They’ll be gathering herbs for Yukiko and talking, and in the middle of a sentence she’ll forget what she’s saying because of the way he’s looking at her, his eyes suddenly looking like molten sunlight. Or he’ll be “escorting” her to a farm adjacent to the estate and give her a hand over a fallen tree or steady her on a narrow bridge and she has to find some reason to avoid looking at him until her face stops burning.

When she almost spills a whole pot of tea because she made some silly joke about “can’t we all get oolong” and Ryuji laughed -- Ryuji never laughs, she’s never heard him chuckle, he hardly even smiles -- and the sound made her heart jump and her stomach flutter and her breath stop all at once, she finally admits to herself she should probably talk to Lady Baome.

The colonel and his wife are exceptionally unpretentious for Earth Kingdom nobility. Even Yukiko, the grumpy elderly apothecary that serves the region, agrees. Colonel Baome can regularly be seen working alongside the laborers on the estate, and Lady Baome invites every girl in the area, regardless of status, to tea at least once a month. Tiarniq, by virtue of living on the estate in an odd position between “ward” and “employee”, gets invited more frequently.

They meet in Lady Baome’s favorite parlor, an airy green room with windows that look out on the gardens. She greets Tiarniq with a warm smile and a slight bow, only a little shallower than Tiarniq’s own. As always, she dismisses the servants as soon as they bring the tea trays in, invites Tiarniq to take her usual seat, and pours the tea for them both.

“How have you been?” Lady Baome asks, offering her the honey.

Tiarniq smiles tightly as she takes it. “How do you get a boy to kiss you?”

Her face instantly heats up. She wishes an earthbender would walk by and bend her into the ground for all eternity.

Lady Baome is, if not the perfect Earth Kingdom lady, as close as Tiarniq thinks it’s possible to be: lovely, elegant, gracious, genteel, and poised in all situations. Tiarniq’s blurted question only makes her raise her eyebrows a fraction. “I assume you’re asking about a particular boy?”

Tiarniq’s face is still red. She shifts in her seat, as if her embarrassment is something she can escape if she just shifts over a few inches. “Just boys in general,” she says, not meeting Lady Baome’s eyes. “I know I’m only sixteen, and it’s not a big deal that I’ve never been kissed, and I’m okay with that. I don’t even really want to kiss him -- anyone, I mean! But what if I do, someday, but he never even looks like he wants to kiss me? What do I do?”

She forces herself to look up at Lady Baome, whose only response is a quiet hum. She looks thoughtful, and a little distant, like her thoughts have taken her far from the estate. “I’m afraid I don’t have much experience,” the lady admits, her smile a little sad, and Tiarniq is suddenly reminded Lady Baome is not even ten years older than her. “There’s only been one boy -- man -- I ever wanted to kiss, and the circumstances were never right.”

“Oh,” Tiarniq says softly. She knew the Colonel and Lady Baome married for more practical reasons than romance, though they seem to be good friends.

“One thing I can recommend,” Lady Baome says after a moment, more present and assured. “The gardener tells me the fire lilies should be blooming in a few weeks. I’m sure the garden will be just as beautiful if you pick one for yourself.” She catches sight of Tiarniq’s expression, and smiles. “They’re a symbol of romantic love,” she explains. “Giving one as a gift is often an opening to a relationship, but if a girl has no one to give a flower to, she can wear it in her hair as a sign she’s looking for love.”

Tiarniq frowns. “Will that work? I’ve never heard of that tradition.”

“Oh, it’s very common in certain parts of the world,” Lady Baome assures her. Then, with a look in her eyes too knowing to be unintentional, she adds nonchalantly, “Like the Fire Nation.”

Tiarniq’s face goes red again.

Though Ryuji continues to hold an alarmingly large place in her thoughts, Tiarniq nearly forgets the fire lilies for the next two weeks. A wave of marsh fever passes through the area, and over a dozen children come down with it. No one’s died of marsh fever in living memory, but nevertheless Yukiko keeps them busy making and distributing tonics for fever and salves for rashes. Ryuji accompanies her on every trip off the estate, but they walk too fast for easy conversation. Her evenings are spent gathering herbs with Yukiko, and every night she crawls into bed hours past midnight, too tired to think.

When the fever finally passes and she remembers Lady Baome's advice, the gardener tells her the season for fire lilies is over. It doesn’t last long, especially in this region of the Earth Kingdom where the climate is just barely enough to grow them in the first place. The best ones were picked and sold, a few were taken to the estate to be pressed or used for decoration, and the rest have all died.

She tells herself she isn't disappointed, that she wouldn't have picked one anyway, that it’s a silly tradition that she didn’t need to follow anyway because she has more important things to think about than a boy. She repeats that to herself as she trudges back to the cabin she shares with the housekeeper, but it isn't any more convincing with repetition.

It takes Tiarniq longer than it should to notice someone sitting by the door to the cabin, staring down at something he's twisting between his hands. Fortunately, seeing who it is sufficiently distracts her from embarrassment at her own distraction.

“Ryuji?”

His head snaps up, and his golden eyes widen in surprise. He opens his mouth, then closes it without a sound. He stands, rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand. In his left, he holds a fire lily. “Hey.”

Don’t look at the flower, Tiarniq tells herself. Stop looking at the flower. She tries for casual. “What are you doing here?”

“Um … “ He looks down at the flower in his hand and seems to come to a decision. He straightens his shoulders, and meeting her gaze with a staggering openness, he holds the flower forward. “This is for you,” he says, his voice raspier than usual.

Tiarniq looks from the fire lily, to him, then back, then back again. “Me?” It comes out in a squeak, but she’s too relieved it came out at all to care.

He nods. “You --” He stops, looks away. “You never leave me alone. No matter how many times I get mad and stomp off or yell at you, you still try to get me to talk to you, or do stuff with you. I don’t know how I haven’t chased you off, but … I’ve realized I don’t want to.” He looks back at her, smiling crookedly in a way that sets off a flock of sparrowkeets in her stomach. “And I don’t know why you would choose me,” he says softly, “when you could have anyone else if you wanted, but--”

She accepts the flower and slides it into her hair, just above her right ear, and smiles shakily up at him. Ryuji smiles back at her, a small, unsure one at first that grows and grows to match her own. He cups her cheek in one hand, and, hesitantly, starts to move in closer, but she’s done waiting. She stands up on her toes to meet him.

Tiarniq is sixteen when she has the best first kiss of her life.

If you don't mind my asking, are you still Christian? I have seen your posts over time about leaving cults and whatnot, and I was curious how that impacted your faith.

Hello! I don't mind you asking at all, and I am happy to talk about it, it's just that it's a very touchy, complicated, controversial and long answer that I don't always know how to answer it in a way that makes sense. (this may get really deep)

If I were to be 100% honest, I will admit that I personally no longer believe in or identify with being a Christian or the Christian faith.

As to what I believe in currently, or what I'd call myself now? I really don't have an answer to that. I guess you could say I'm currently leaning more towards being an agnostic and sometimes atheist? But honestly, the things I may agree with today, may change tomorrow. and I'm sure the things I will believe in currently will be completely changed in a year. And.... I am ok with that. I want to be questioning and to have an open mind to things, opinions and questions and to have the permission to be wrong and to change my mind on things as I learn new or more information.

This is not a choice that I've come to easily, or glibly. It's been a process I've been in the past 3 maybe 4 years of my life, and I think in the last year is when I've chosen to leave the faith. It's a place I never thought I would be in and it's involved a lot of pain, confusion and trauma and healing in my life. There is a whole ton more I could go more deeply into, but I don't feel this is the right post to do that, and I don't quite have words yet to explain or describe everything.

As far as the cult thing goes, there were and are a lot ways that I was raised and taught to believe in, that by definition, was a cult. There were a lot things that were abusive and still traumatize and cut into me deeply and I am in the process of recovering from and untangling the things that were taught to me and it still brings up a lot of trauma for me, of which I am thankfully getting help for.

I also joined a well known Christian organization around the age of 21/22, and was in it for over 2 years, until Covid hit and I had to go home. And the more time I was out and after a ton of research and studying, I will be honest and say that that organization is a cult, and it did leave a lot of mental and financial wounds on me that I am going to be recovering from for a long time. Did I learn a lot from that experience and grow from it? Yes I did, but it is an experience and chapter of my life that I am glad is over.

I know that from the short examples that I've given it's really easy to say that that really wasn't true Christianity, or it was just people poorly misrepresenting the word and love of God, or worse, blaming me and saying that I was never a Christian to begin with, which I can't even begin to explain how much and how deeply into the faith I truly was, and how hurtful that allegation is.

...And maybe all of that is true... And maybe it isn't....

There is a lot of pain, betrayal, anger and grief that I am still healing from and will be healing from for years to come. I don't want to live in a state of bitterness and anger and blame of the things that were done to me. But I also want to admit and be honest about the wrongs that were done to me and the abuse that was done to me in the name of Love.

I need time and separation, but mostly I need love and understanding. It's one of the most painful and isolating experiences I've ever gone through in my life, and so utterly earth shattering and life changing and most of the time you can't even talk to your family or friends about it because you are so afraid of the way they will react and what they will take away from you.

A lot of this is very surface level of my journey through this "deconstruction" of faith if that's what you want to call it. There's so much more that I could go in depth in, but again I don't always have the words or mental fortitude to really get into a lot of things.

If you still have questions I'll try my best to answer. I know this is a really sad and hard thing for a lot of people to hear, and yeah.

It is sad. It's devastating.

There are days I wish could go back to the way it was, or that I could fully go back into the faith.... but I can't. And, despite the excruciating pain and grief that I've been going through, I ironically feel so much more freedom and peace than I ever did in religion. Which I know is hard to comprehend... it's hard for me to explain.

I'm sorry for the ramble and the heaviness. But I guess now's as good a time as any to finally admit this about myself and where I am at.

My final thought is to please have so much grace and understanding to people in your life who are going through a similar process to me. If you have friends or family in this same process, please just be kind to them. They didn't ask for any of this, and many times these doubts and questions came from things out of their control, and they're simply trying and surviving the best they can. There is so much pain there that I'm sure they haven't expressed to you because they are afraid of losing everyone and everything that they love, simply because they do not believe in the same thing anymore. So just love them, and hold space for them and don't argue or defend, as that will only push them away further. And also be open to them. They may have very important and valid insights to things that you may have become blind to. If you really believe in a loving, kind and gracious God then he would be doing those things for these people 10 fold.

actually i have discovered the only true and correct reading of md/zs: wgxn are the true Evil Men of mdzs. just look at how they’re dealing with lxc post-guanyin

i like to think that sunoo is honestly skeptical abt ghosts

like he definitely has tried to talk to them, but hasn't discovered anything conclusive to definitively prove the existence of ghosts

anyways because it's the season finale

sunoo has a special guest...

you! his gf!

i think he'd be low key about your relationship, but his viewers know who you are

the video starts off normal

sunoo gives a rundown of the history of the bellaire house, like when it was built, the people that lived in it, the strange occurences in there, etc

the bickering between you and sunoo as you go over the bellaire house is very cute and sweet

it definitely makes it into those "sunoo and [name] being a comedic duo" compilations aw

anyways now its time to investigate the bellaire house head on 😈

sunoo pulls out all his cool ghost-catching gadgets

he tries everything

like the thermal camera, EMF meter, even the goddamn magnetic field detector

sunoos getting annoyed bc why are none of the ghosts talking to him :(

on the other hand

you're clinging onto him, hiding behind ur bf scared shitless

sunoo huffs and turns to the camera, "welp it looks like there's no ghosts here"

one of the people in his camera crew suggest having you ask instead of him

even though youre scared you do it for ur bf

you're like "hi ghosts..... if you're here with us... please flicker the lights"

THE LIGHTS BEGIN TO FLICKER AAAAAAAA

AND SUNOOS HYPED OUT OF HIS MIND

"BABE BABE BABE ASK THEM THEIR NAME"

so youre like "ghosts... whats your name"

and NO JOKE

A WIND BLOWS PAST THE ROOM

AND EVERYONE IN THE ROOM SWEARS THEY HEAR SOMEONE WHISPER FAINTLY

so that's how you and sunoo meet robert the ghost

BUT THAT'S NOT THE END

BECAUSE SUNOO HAS THE BRILLIANT IDEA OF PULLING OUT HIS OUIJA BOARD

tbh you both look dumb as hell

sitting on the crusty bellaire house floor

hunched over a ouija board

sunoo is now asking questions

but the ouija board doesn't even move

but when you ask

"robert, how are you today? yes for good, and no for bad"

THE GODDAMN PLANCHETTE MOVES TO YES AKA GOOD 😭

you and sunoo then introduce yourselves

again, when sunoo introduces himself nothing happens

but when you introduce yourself

the candle that's lit beside you goes out

someone in sunoo's camera crew jokes that they think that robert the ghost likes you

so sunoo jokingly asks "robert are you flirting with my girlfriend?"

AND THE OUIJA BOARD SAYS YES 😭😭😭

and when you kiss sunoo the doors in the house start slamming and shit like SOMEONES MAD

sunoo is lowk offended

and then he starts to beef with robert the ghost

except robert the ghost never respond to anything that sunoo says

bro leaves sunoo on heard

sunoos like "HEY ROBERT I DON'T CARE IF YOURE A DEMON YOU BETTER BACK THE FUCK UP!!"

later when ygs review the emf recorder it picks up robert the ghost whispering "i don't care 🙄"

sassy ass ghost

on the other hand

robert responds to EVERYTHING you say

atp you're not scared anymore

"hai robert i'm [name], knock over that doll over there if you want to be my friend"

and the doll knocks over 😭

"robert knock on the window if you think i'm cute :3"

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

the camera crew is just laughing their asses off

at some point

the ouija board starts moving on its own

everyones like WOAHHH IT'S ACTUALLY MOVING!!! QUICK GET A PIECE OF PAPER SO WE CAN RECORD WHAT ITS SAYING!!!

sunoo is taking such dilligent notes

it starts with i, then s, then it spells out your name, and then s, i, n, g, l, e

" ' IS [NAME] SINGLE' ???"

is what the ouija board says

yes a goddamn ghost just asked that

SUNOO IS NOT HAVING IT

while you and the camera crew are cracking up

sunoo starts telling off robert

"listen bro just because you died in the bellaire house doesn't mean that you can try to take my gf 😐"

robert the ghost is being sassy too

so sunoo literally just snaps the ouija board in half

"haha you can't talk anymore robert .😐."

yk how in buzzfeed unsolved they take turns staying in the haunted place alone with all the lights off

sunoo kicks everyone out so that he can have a "man to man" talk with robert

robert isn't a physical person but everyone swears they hear crying

.... and it sure isn't coming from sunoo 😇

i think this would go really viral

Aziraphale was wrong this. He’ll come crawling back that. I want him to do the apology dance blah blah blah.

You know what I want? I want him to succeed.

I want him to give Heaven hell.

I want him to be a problem of the Metatron’s own making.

I keep seeing a take floating around that the Metatron was obviously lying when calling Aziraphale a natural leader and a good choice for Supreme Archangel and just trying to butter Aziraphale up so he’ll be more open to the idea of rejoining Heaven, but I think there is an important distinction to be made in this regard.

Aziraphale IS those things. He IS a natural leader. He was the first being to ever wield a weapon on earth. He is a high ranking member of Heaven’s army and was in charge of a platoon in the first war EVER. HE WAS FULLY EXPECTED TO DO SO AGAIN IN ARMAGEDDON. We can see this leadership both in Season 1 when he insists to Crowley that they don’t run away and in Season 2 when facing the demons. And if Heaven actually was everything it was meant to be, everything it still proclaims that it is, Aziraphale WOULD be the obvious choice for Supreme Archangel, because when faced between making the right choice or making the obedient one, or even between making the right choice or the comfortable choice, he has always picked the right one.

Give up the sword and lie to God or let the humans suffer? Welp, there goes the sword.

Lie on my word as an Angel or allow three human children to be killed? Guess who’s lying again!

Go back to my abusers in order to make things better for everyone or run away with the love of my life who just confessed his feelings for me? Up I go.

Here’s the kicker. The Metatron ALSO thinks he was lying to Aziraphale. In the Metatron’s eyes, Aziraphale is none of those things. The Metatron and the Archangels are nothing but condescending pricks to the Angel they see as a bumbling, incompetent, slightly insane fool who chose Earth over Heaven.

I don’t want Aziraphale to come crawling back. I don’t want him to realize it’s a lost cause. I don’t want him to give up.

What I want is to see the Metatron’s face as he watches Aziraphale succeed.
