The rough sketch was started and left to languish in 2018. Six years. It took me SIX years to do something with it. And all it really required was for me to decide to return to my crack-ridden roots. (There's now a link on my main page to all my stupid multi-fandom fancomics and 4koma nonsense.)

My first impression of LWJ: "Oh god, not another one of those broody, cold asshole CEO-type of Male Leads, is it??
Me after reading the novel several times: "I'M SO NORMAL ABOUT THIS GUY. HE'S SO SO GOOOD!!!! GHFGGFHDSETYGFDGG BEST PARTNER, BROTHER, FATHER, BEST EVERYTHING-"
Seriously, the way he struggles with his perception of wrong and right and what he's been told all his life is the right thing versus what he's been shown the right thing is, the way he loves and yearns so deeply but is just as determined to not trouble his love interest with his desires, lest he feels obligated to reciprocate out of (God forbid) gratitude or a sense of debt, the way he grows and learns from his mistakes and becomes a better man in a way that few characters in the novel, or in general fiction, do and is so, so righteous. (Growing up is not easy! And he had a lot of that to do before he could become a partner to WWX, because he didn't exactly treat him as an equal. But he does, and I love that so much!)

one of my favorite things about the mxtx characters and stories is that like. the characters feel like real people. you get to hear shen qingqui's inner 'FUCK FUCK FUCK' dialogue and you get to see xie lian be a little shit sometimes and you get to feel all of ups and downs with wei wuxian
mxtx is an amazing author. its really hard to make characters feel alive and real

I'm reading Renegade Immortal and man... compared to other xianxia and wuxia novels, I really find Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian's story to really be about upholding your morals. Like, the protagonists of other novels are not necessarily morally bad, but they really give you a societal point of view. Like, it's bad if it's an individual doing a powerful cultivation all on his own. But in so many novels, I've read such stuff about demonic cultivation sects and they're denounced by orthodox cultivators, yet sought out for their tricks and help. Even the nicer protagonists that I really like, bloodily chase after power, and breakthroughs, using anything available to them. 'Go where the chaos is' is really a myth and nobody cares about the common people. Like, it is a common trope to kill all the common people in case they spill information. Even in lower xianxia, it's not uncommon to take revenge for what someone said about you once you're stronger.
I really wish I'd read more of xianxia/wuxia genres before reading MDZS cause then I'd be completely sold on the idea that Wei Wuxian was charming, and had done plentiful of uncalled for crimes to grow more powerful, and then I'd be struck with the fact that it's not like that at all? In some xianxia books, I've come across corpse puppets, and living puppets but like... people have one of those. Gui Dao is so unique and I really would've appreciated it so much more if I knew of the genre conventions as I do now.
Plus, with my first introduction to MDZS being CQL which made it more like a tragic sibling story - ahhh. I can totally imagine if I read MDZS right now for the first time after delving sufficiently into common tropes of cultivation genre and Chinese poems and culture, I'd be blown away by Wei Wuxian's character and Lan Wangji's heart.
