Recently extinct species make me sad for all the usual and normal reasons (loss of life, biodiversity and unique life forms that experienced the world wholly uniquely and acted in it like no other, to name three), but a big thing that also makes me so sad is the forgetting that comes right after. Many endangered species are greatly ignored to begin with whilst alive of course, which is awful, but the way that extinction also causes us to forget. A species could’ve been so abundant a hundred years ago, people would’ve used a fish species or a tasty plant for food, or parents would’ve warned their children to not put a poisonous toadstool or insect in their mouth, a diver would exclaim, “Aha!” after emerging from the shallows holding an especially big bivalve, or someone making a species diary would sketch out a local bird or fasten a single flower to the page. But.. then the species goes extinct. It doesn’t exist anymore. None of these events, these actions happen anymore. Not with these species. The people who had these experiences dwindle out and they may not even realise that their experiences were among the last of their kind. And we forget.

one thing that stands out to me about the IVF arc is the way that, for as much as i make fun of her for asking her coworker if she can have his babies, scully asking mulder to be involved in the biggest process of her life (and the most important thing in the rest of her life) is such a healing and reverent experience. like he says “i’m absolutely flattered,” but it’s so much more than that. it’s like…spending your whole life feeling like you should’ve died at age twelve and then being told someone just wants more of you, more and more and more, in everything.

@ihaventpickedausername wanted to see the tazzy version of mutant cass, so here's some concept sketches.
I ACTUALLY REALLY LOVE THIS DESIGN! and i thought a tasmanian devil suited her really well too - small, but INCREDIBLY fierce (they have the highest Bite Force Quotient of any living animal!! about the size of a cat, but with a bite so strong it can crush bone), and they just remind me of her visually, too.
the reason i stuck with ferret is because logically there would be close to NO way for casey to find a devil, let alone come into contact with one without being mauled. they're an endangered species endemic to Tasmania. and i didn't have a preference between the two options anyway. if i'd stuck with tazzy devil, though, her mutant powers would probably relate to screaming/biting.
while i'm talking about them, yes, tasmanian devils are endangered! one cause being due to cars/roadkill, but the main threat being Devil Facial Tumour Disease - a transmittable parasitic cancer that's done numbers on wild devil populations. If you want to learn more, University of Tasmania has some projects on DFTD, Wildcare Tasmania has a lot of good resources, and Zoos Victoria has a brief summary of everything.

idk how people in my life keep being surprised by the fact i am an environmentalist first and an animal lover second. we should cull the feral cats, dogs, mustangs, declare open season on deer, and reintroduce natural predators to the environment. sorry that y'all love ecological devastation but i'm built different

Doctor Who's Kill the Moon🤝Voyager's Retrospect🤝yes I know the writers didn't intend for the story to be a metaphor the thing that it is obviously a metaphor for , but the thing is, it's an extremely obvious metaphor, so for better or worse (worse) it is about that and while I feel kinda bad for the writers knowing that the thing they created is reviled for totally unintended reasons, the episode does suck so so bad

Fairchild Preparatory School for Young Avatars my beloved
I like thinking about avatar mentors and what would happen if different avatars were alive together at the same time
The guys from the buried are just chilling and doing their own thing probably, along with the two people who could be considered extinction avatars according to the wiki. Oliver Banks and Anabelle Cane are also just chilling.
You got John Amherst with his corruption daughter that he loves very much found family and worms. The Desolation and the Dark have family drama going on with Agnes and Callum respectively. Turns out you can still be rebellious and you can feed your fear god.
The stuff going on with the eye is funny because Elias is trying so desperately to train Jon and be a good mentor but considering everyone is alive? Gertrude would not be having that. She may not be a powerful avatar but she still has powers. Peter and Martin have a similar dynamic but it’s more so “do you wanna become an avatar of the lonely Martin” “no thanks” “that’s fine I’ll ask tomorrow”.
Angela is like a nagging grandmother to Jared, Julia and Trevor would rather not be there but they have to go anyways, and they still have to interact with Daisy who brought Basira along against the rules of the academy. Michael and Helen are playing cards, they got Alfred Grifter as special guest school DJ because the Piper wasn’t available. There are so many stranger students they had to limit them because they couldn’t keep up with remembering who was what.
And of course Simon and Mike are there.
