Semi-Finals - Catholic Character Tournament
Tumblr media
Propaganda below ⬇️
Sister Michael
She drives a DeLorean. She does judo on Fridays. She likes a good statue and despises the French. Her full nun name is Sister George Michael, after the guy from Wham!. She is the fiercest nun you’ll ever come across and, if you’re attending Lady Immaculate College, she’s the woman in charge. So whatever you do, if you’re feeling anxious or worried or just need a chat: don’t come crying to her.
joined the nunnery for the free accommodation?
she does love a good statue it has to be said
She is the headmistress of a catholic school <3
sister michael so reminds me of the nuns who taught me. they're tough and sometimes a little harsher than a woman who dedicated her life to god should be but they're also wonderful people. i had a nun teacher who was 60 years old and would do handstands. another nun (also in her 60s) told me god was nonbinary. another was really mean and made me cry. (so did the handstand nun.) while the catholic girls school is The Catholic Experience, the school wouldn't have been the same for me or the derry girls without at least one nun who seemed to have sprung up out of the ground fully formed, ageless.
Shadow
In sonic destruction (the AI generated fan thing snapcube made a while ago) shadow was catholic or something which I think is reallyyyyyyy funny
Ok listen. I know this is a stretch but hear me out. He says “oh my God” in the Twitter takeovers so we know this is a possibility. I see him as a Christ-like figure because I saw his whole confrontation with Mephiles and was like “this is a thing that happened in the Bible??” and the pose Mephiles shows him in is literally like a crucifixion and Mephiles is meant to be a demon / false prophet reference. And also he’s called a demon in Shadow The Hedgehog 2005 then the guy who calls him that is like “I was wrong I’m sorry” and that also reminds me of a thing with Jesus in The Bible. But the biggest reason is his whole thing with Maria cause I think he’d come to earth and hear Ave Maria once and convert to Catholicism idk he’s like we’re comforted by a female familial figure named Mary sometimes called Maria?? And her color is blue????? Heck yeah I’m in because I Will Cry. Also feel free to share this as propaganda obv even if he doesn’t get in the bracket just. It’s funny.
I feel like he’d battle a lot with being seen or portrayed as a demon and how the aliens he’s related to very much look and act like demons idk lmao- and also I feel like confession would just be good for him I think he needs it for his mental health
There is a debate on the lovely website tunblr that Shadow T. Hedgehog is an allegory for Jesus Christ.
He is Jesus, idk what to tell you. He lived, he was sealed away, he was awakened again and deemed the ultimate lifeforms, he’s angry but not evil, does what he believes is best for people and the world at any given time. Total loser.
Vote for Shadow the Hedgehog
There seems to be some confusion in the notes. He is Catholic. It may not be explicit, but it can be inferred.
Shadow was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, and for the early part of his life, lived with Gerald and his granddaughter, Maria Robotnik.
Robotnik is not a made-up name. Google Search results may only bring up pages related to the Robotniks of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, however, it is a rarely used Polish surname. Poland is a historically Catholic nation, and… come on. Maria is the most Catholic name ever. The Robotniks are Catholic. Shadow was created and raised by Catholics.
Now you may be wondering to yourself: Does Catholicism even exist in Sonic? The answer is yes, at least in the Archie comics, where Protestants are explicitly mentioned.
Tumblr media
64.media.tumblr.com
Couple this with the fact that several characters, including Shadow, have canonically taken the Lord’s name in vain, it is reasonable to infer that Christianity, and therefore Catholicism, exists.
So… while Shadow’s own religious beliefs may not have been explicitly addressed… at minimum:
Catholic is a cultural designation that Shadow will always be allowed to claim based on the family that made him.
Whether he’d actually want to claim that designation is a different conversation, but the other propaganda does a fine job of explaining why it may be appropriate to headcanon him as a practicing Catholic.
Now that we’ve established that Shadow has as much of a right to be in this tournament as anyone else, there’s one very important reason you should vote for him:
It would be funny if he won.
Thank you.
Tumblr media
64.media.tumblr.com
Essays are done!! Here’s some Shadow propaganda because the propaganda we currently have sucks and I need to fix that. While yes, Shadow being Catholic is a meme, there is more to outside of the simple “fandub said so” and its not quite stated its Catholicism but just how he behaves and his actions. There’s a lot of Sonic content so I will try to keep this brief. Gonna get headcanons out of the way.
Shadow is Chilean and so are Maria and Gerald Robotnik because I fucking say so and they’re Catholic. He definitely had un rosario next to his like. Bed or test tube whatever he slept in. So did Maria btw. Alright let’s move on because I am 100% correct.
Let’s start with some background for Shadow. Shadow was created as a cure for a girl called Maria and he grew to care for her as a sister and loved her deeply. He was artificially created but still holds a soul that is similar to Maria’s. Long story short, Maria is killed protecting Shadow who watches as she’s shot in front of him. He has his memories tampered by Maria’s grandfather, Gerald, who manipulates him into carrying out revenge on the Earth, even if Shadow ends up as collateral.
Shadow struggles with frequent identity crises, even before Maria’s death and always wondered what his purpose was, what he was made to do. Was he a weapon? Was he a cure? He’s the Ultimate Lifeform, but what does that truly mean? ? He’s Shadow, but what more is there to him? He doesn’t know what his purpose is other than what others have prescribed to him, and he guides himself through the will of others (something that he breaks through afterwards but not yet). Shadow at his core is self-sacrificing and constantly punishes himself. This is where you can see some of that good old guilt that everyone has been using as propaganda, but we also see someone who is giving and kind.
He is snarky in the game, especially when interacting with Sonic, but he’s having what is essentially an ongoing mental breakdown but keeps moving because it is his duty to his sister. He doesn’t believe himself important enough to continue on after her and sees it in himself to act out on “Maria’s wishes”. After the revelation that Maria’s final wish for Shadow was for him to make those on Earth happy and to protect them, he immediately sacrifices himself to do so.
Okay, that’s a lot and you’re probably asking “Okay, you mentioned he is a giving person and yeah he has guilt, but that’s not really Catholicism” and yes you would be right! So let’s go into the more important part of being Catholic. The charity, the community, the kindness, etc. Shadow is a very reserved person and has the habit of being a dumb teenager because well. Yeah. Anyways, he definitely has a soft spot for those he cares about and while his whole arc (in my opinion) is about finding the freedom of self-autonomy, it is also Shadow growing as a person and deciding not to save people because others have told him he needs to, but because he wants to. It is born from his soul and its his nature to care for people. It is who he is, and he knows it now. He’s not doing it because he’s a hero or because he is told to do so. Shadow is a very giving person and I think people tend to forget about that especially due to bad writing from the past decade or so. He is also stated to help out at food shelters and volunteers a lot. He is proud and a bit prickly, but he cares so deeply about those he loves. He is stronger with his loved ones and will always do his best to protect them. These are minor, yeah, but you don’t need sweeping and enormous acts to get attention for the good deeds you do. Most of what you apply of Catholicism is done at the personal level, between your friends, family, and community. He also goes to Mass whenever he can and if he can’t he goes to the capilla and also does the sign of the cross whenever he runs by a church. Cutting this off because this is already 740-ish words and I had to send these across multiple asks I am so sorry Catholic mod

Tv shows I like with absolutely bangin soundtracks
Gilmore Girls - Carole King, Grant-Lee Philips (troubadour), The Bangles, The Shins, Sam Philips, Bowie, Blondie, Nancy Sinatra, The Smiths, Talking Heads. Everything from the oldies to current stuff, mostly various flavors of rock. Lots of new wave and post punk vibes. It’s got everything from greatest hits to deep cuts. The whole show is a love letter to (mostly American, mostly white) art/media in general. While I acknowledge plenty of the references do not hold up, I hold that the soundtrack has zero misses in terms of well-chosen bangers.
Sex Education - Ezra Furman does a lot of it, and then they throw in loads of rock and pop classics and current stuff. Violent Femmes, Fleetwood Mac, T.Rex, The Velvet Underground, Brenton Wood, Queen. It’s honestly on par with Gilmore Girls, Furman takes the place of Carole King/Grant-Lee Philips and then everything else is an eclectic and fun mix. It’s more diverse than the GG soundtrack and also has zero misses.
Grace & Frankie - the intro theme is Stealers Wheel but the rest of it is a mix of oldies and current stuff. Eclectic as hell, I adore it. Everything from Gloria Gaynor to Bahamas. A bit of it is covers but they’re good covers. Then you’ve got Any Winehouse, The Milk Carton Kids, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, Alabama Shakes, 7horse, Little Richard, Adele. I think I caught a bit of punk in Frankie’s car in one scene, it might’ve been the Clash but I forget.
Madam Secretary - ok hear me out!!!! You’ve got Andra Day, Adele, Bowie, Peter Frampton, Joni Mitchell, a song from a Sondheim musical, several songs performed by the cast with their vocals and piano (inc. Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, a parody of a Billy Joel song, a few Christmas songs…). And then the song of all time, Cemalım (Erkin Koray) which slaps.
Our Flag Means Death - every song in the soundtrack is a banger I just personally always have different associations with them already because they’re always quite important to me before i see the show. Which is why it’s so low on the list for me personally. Also I have spent the last year and a half overthinking every song I hear through the brainrot lens and I associate like a whole other group of songs with that show now instead of the soundtrack. But the actual canon soundtrack is good, I love Lou Reed, Fleetwood Mac, etc.
How to Get Away With Murder - man I didn’t even finish watching this show and some of the songs stuck with me. Mostly IAMX.
What We Do In The Shadows - the fucking intro Norma Tenga song alone changed my life. It goes so goddamn hard. And then you add King Luan, Tol-Puddle Martyrs, Matt Berry’s originals, MUSE!!!!, Echo & The Bunnymen, Haley Heynderickx (who is SURELY also in Sex Ed), THE CRAMPS (perfect choice, I was furious until they finally put ‘em in), Siouxsie and Bauhaus (both almost certainly also in Gilmore Girls, but I could be wrong)… man I could continue from just season 5 alone they really don’t miss.
Community - their soundtrack includes The Police, Florence + The Machine, The Fratellis, The Cranberries, Lord Huron… and of course loads of cast originals.
Criminal Minds - pixies, NIN, the Kinks, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Jeff Buckley… all of this was also on Gilmore Girls. Billy Joel, Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz, Deep Purple, Korn, Boston, Johnny Cash, AC/DC, Bob Dylan, THE BLACK KEYS!!!!, REM, Leonard Cohen, Cage the Elephant… all bangers. Honestly that’s part of what kept me watching for so long.
I’d just like to acknowledge Twin Peaks, The Sopranos, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Father Brown, and Heartstopper, Derry Girls, the Good Place, and Parks and Rec, which all also have soundtracks.

°When she didn't respond you stopped leaning against her and tried to read her facial expressions.
°You could see her because of the reflection to the moonlight shining on to her beautiful features.
°She was blushing.
°And smirking.
°She looked at you, then her gaze flickered to your rosy, soft, and shiny lips.

🔥 The Reunion
(I’ll throw in one of my own- personally I rlly enjoyed seeing what the moms were like as teens, but randomly giving Deirdre a never-before-mentioned male foreign cousin just for the sake of having a “James” in the group seemed a bit forced + unnecessary. I think it would’ve been a much more interesting + natural story if Gerry or Kathy had been in the flashback instead.)
oh i love hearing your thoughts on it too, anon! i have mostly just some raggedy, not at all concise, way too long thoughts about the reunion so i put them below a cut.
at the time it aired, i didn't love where it fell in the course of the season, but that's mostly because it felt like time was running out; it makes sense to me now that it falls where it does because it helps to break that momentum and refocus the show after the james/erin kiss. overall, season 3 had a lot more of the older generation which was always, always lovely and really helped to situate the show more fully in the contemporary political moment and history of northern ireland, but i found myself toward the end feeling like i, as a viewer, hadn't had enough time with the girls themselves; honestly, i still feel like that about season 3. but i think this all lines up with something lisa mcgee said in an interview: that she started out derry girls feeling like one of the girls and ended it feeling like one of the mammies. i see this reflected a lot in season 3. to me, there are about as many good things about it as there are things i didn't like about it. at this point i guess i feel pretty neutral; i wonder (and even long for) what could have been for so many things and think that some of the shifts in tone and writing and editing and direction and even acting weren't always in service of the best product, but i also so highly value what we did get. i wouldn't be here if i didn't.
did i cry at the end of the reunion? is one of my favorite scenes in season 3 the dancing montage which moves between the mammies' teen and adult selves? did i immediately want to go watch it all over again with my mom? a resounding yes to all three.
i hear you on deidre's never-before-mentioned foreign cousin! my only caveat - and it's a big one - is that he gave us the warmest, sweetest, most enthusiastic conversation with clare's parents about how she's not yet a "fully qualified" gay. to me, this overcomes all clunkiness in including the character. he serves a good purpose even though his inclusion is not in overall service to the story being told.
i would have loved to see kathy included and wonder why she wasn't. maybe she was too young to attend? if james and michelle are born around the same time, and deidre has to have niall first, then kathy could have been way too young to attend. gerry, similarly, would have been a delight, though it does seem from small crumbs throughout the entirety of the show that mary and gerry met after mary graduates. joe refers to him as a "slack southern shite" which makes it seem to me like he's not from derry originally. tommy tiernan's accent doesn't seem like it's trying to be especially derry-ish to me either? but i might be totally off on that one or reading way too much into all of it.

Eurovision Reviews: Semi final 2 2022
1: Finland: The Rasmus - Jezebel
Sending The Rasmus is the most finnish thing Finland could possibly do - after getting fantastic results last year with an imitation of 2002 rock music, now they're sending the real thing. I love how dedicated Finland is to rock music, this song slaps, and I really hope they get good results.
8/10
2: Israel: Michael Ben David - I.M
He's the gayest man in Tel Aviv and I love him for it. The lyrics are just a mishmash of Rupaul's drag race catchphrases, except for that one line about middle east sex appeal, that one's new. I know this isn't strong enough for the competition but I think it's so much fun.
6/10
3: Serbia: Konstrakta - In Corpore Sano
I have to be honest, at first, I really disliked the Meghan Markle namedrop at the very beginning of the song. Sure, it grabs your attention, but the reference feels instantly dated, in a way that works against the rest of the song, which feels timeless yet undeniably modern. Despite this one problem, I have come to really love this song, it's truly unique, both in sound and lyrical content. Konstrakta comes across as less of a singer and more as a genius performance artist.
8/10
4: Azerbaijan: Nadir Rustamli - Fade To Black
It's Azerbaijan going back to their usual schtick - A competent song sung by a competent singer, with competent staging, there's probably a couple of competent Swedish songwriters in there somewhere. It's fine, I don't hate it but it's so hard to get excited about it. It goes into one ear and out of the other. Cute staging though.
5/10
5: Georgia: Circus Mircus - Lock Me In
I love it when Georgia gets weird. I heard a rumor that they are going to have an actual puppet show on stage, and if that's true, I'm going to lose my mind, this entire band is a weird acid trip. Also, I'm really glad to see Nika Kocharov in Eurovision again, he represented Georgia in 2016 with, Midnight Gold, which is probably the most underrated Eurovision song in recent memory as well as one of my personal favorites.
8/10
6: Malta: Emma Muscat - I Am What I Am
Who is this for? No, really, who is going to feel inspired by this? It sounds like pop music for really religious kids who aren't allowed to listen to real pop music.
2/10
7: San Marino: Achille Lauro - Stripper
There's a gay Italian cowboy stripper riding a mechanical bull surrounded by nuclear grade pyrotechnic explosions, who cares about the song? Jokes aside, this song was in my top 10 even before I saw the staging - It's a fun rock song that doesn't take itself too seriously, and sometimes that's all you need.
10/10
8: Australia: Sheldon Riley - Not the Same
I'm not a big fan of self-empowerment songs that sound sad and tragic, and I can't find a single positive emotion in this song, it's all misery and desperation. His voice is incredible, his stage costume is absolutely beautiful, but I don't know how I'm supposed to feel listening to the song. I should probably be moved to tears, but I have no idea if it's supposed to be happy or sad tears, so it ends up being neither.
5/10
9: Cyprus: Andromache - Ela
The Greek language is so beautiful to me - I have really missed hearing it in Eurovision over the past few years. The song sounds the way being on a Mediterranean island vacation feels.
7/10
10: Ireland: Brooke Scullion - That's Rich
It's like if Michelle from Derry Girls tried to be a popstar, so that's fun. It's pretty ironic that a song called "That's rich" sounds so cheap.
6/10
11: North Macedonia: Andrea - Circles
This song is just nothing. It goes on and on and on for what feels like three hours, and absolutely nothing happens.
2/10
12: Estonia: Stefan - Hope
It's Avicii's cowboy era with some added Morricone inspiration - the production sounds flawless. I can't understand a word he's saying though, I think he's slurring his words to sound more like a cowboy.
Also, I'm sad that we won't get to see the intended staging for this - the desert landscape would have been exactly what this song needed, but I guess we're getting a black hole instead.
7/10
13: Romania: WRS - Llámame
It feels like something from Eurovision 2009, even though the song is pretty modern. I really like it, it's pure eurovision camp, but it's a little bit mediocre.
6/10
14: Poland: Ochman - River
He has the best vocals of the year, hands down. They have definitely taken some inspiration from Gjon's Tears - I get it, he won last year's jury vote so it's probably a smart move. It's really modern and beautifully produced, but the songwriting is just good, not great. His vocals are making the song sound a lot bigger than it actually is.
8/10
15: Montenegro: Vladana - Breathe
I wish it wasn't in English, because I wish I could unhear these lyrics. It tries so hard to be important and dramatic, but it just falls flat.
2/10
16: Belgium: Jérémie Makiese - Miss You
I like how we're getting this one song that feels like American rnb - there is room for that in Eurovision! With that said, it's pretty forgettable, and I'm worried about his live vocals.
5/10
17: Sweden: Cornelia Jakobs - Hold Me Closer
I think this is Sweden's best song since Euphoria, and it's the most genuinely emotional song Sweden has sent in my lifetime. There's zero artifice, but it's still an expertly written pop song. I love the perfectly imperfect vocals, they're not for everyone, but it feels great to get something potentially polarizing from Sweden, just this one time. It's the authentic Swedish indie pop that fans have been asking for for years, and it deserves all the hype it gets. It's the right song at the right time, pun intended.
10/10
18: Czech Republic: We Are Domi - Lights Off
This song is doing everything right - the production is great, the staging is exciting, the song is catchy - but I keep forgetting that it exists. I can remember how it goes, but I can't remember that it's in the competition. I like it, don't get me wrong, but I can't call it a favorite.

Good morning
Two percent battery
Just finished watching Derry girls with my mother and I never realised they actually reference the sisters of mercy lol
Anyway, you can only have one streaming service for the rest of your life. What is it?
Have a spectacular day
hello
Last night was strange. The power was out but it kept surging? So the lights and air cons would keep turning on and off. It was freaky and I hated it (we did turn everything off and it fixed itself five minutes in)
I also slept in my brothers bed? Him and sister shared her bed and I didn’t want to be alone, and his room is closest to mother and her partner so that’s where I slept. Until he turned the light on at six and hit me till I got up. (Also his bed is bigger than mine??????)
I love Derry girls, I rewatch it for sillies
Im gonna keept netflix. Disney+ is close but yk, it’s not netflix
Goodnighty

What specifically do you find attractive about her?
Last thing she texted you?
If she asked you out on a date, how would you respond?
I don't think you understand how excited I am about this round. This is GENIUS BREE! GENIUS!
I'm setting my answers after Miami but before he quits, because the pining was just too good.
Also, he doesn't have any other nicknames for her at this point, other than Gen and Rookie. G is a special one that happens in book 2, so... you didn't need to know that, but I'm telling you anyway.
Okay on to the fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Both
1. When I first saw them, I thought__________
Ethan: Remind me why we're doing this? Gen: Cause they asked nicely and I also asked nicely? Ethan: Right, fine. *clears throat* When I first saw Genevieve, I thought she was a decent enough doctor. Gen: *giggles* You called me amateur! Ethan: You were. But still a good doctor, and you proved me right. Gen: *blushes* When I first saw Ethan, I thought he was an ass and really, really attractive. Ethan: I'm sorry, what? Gen: That can't be surprising to you. Considering the other night... Ethan: Right. Right.
2. What is your coworker's most used swear word?
Gen: Christ. He says it all the time. Ethan: I do not. Gen: Yes, you do. What's mine? Ethan: You're far more crass than I am. Gen: I am not! Ethan: Yes you are. You alternate between shit and fuck pretty frequently. Gen: ... you're not wrong.
3. Quick: What color are their eyes?
Gen: Blue. Ethan: Emerald. Gen: You could just say green. Ethan: I could have.
4. Three people at work your coworker hates?
Gen: *snickers* Easy. Dr Richards, the anesthesiologist. Dr Toussaint and Dr Calais. Ethan: I don't hate -- Gen: You hate them. Ethan: *sighs* Fine. Genevieve doesn't hate anyone, I don't think she's even capable of that. Gen: That's sweet. Ethan: It's true. There's not a hateful bone in your body, Rookie. *They smile at each other*
5. What is your coworker’s strangest or most endearing quirk?
Ethan: Gen refers to use anything other than a black pen. If there's not one at the desk, she'll search for one. Gen: I can't tell if you're saying that as something strange or endearing. Ethan: Endearing, although in the beginning of our... friendship I found it strange. Now it's... endearing. Gen: Oh... Ethan: I'm almost afraid of your answer. Gen: Does pinching the bridge of his nose all the time count? Cause he does it whenever he's mad, or annoying, or frustrated. It's cute. Ethan: Don't say cute. Gen: I could say a different word, but I don't think that would be appropriate. Ethan: *blushes*
6. If they had a crush on anyone at work, who would that be?
Ethan: Your surgeon friend, Lahela. Or that scrawny one. Gen: Landry? Gross. No. Never. He's not my type. Ethan: What is your type, surgeons? Gen: *leans over and whispers* No, you. Ethan: *clears his throat* Genevieve. Gen: Ethan's crush would be Harper. Or Nurse Sarah. Ethan: No, on both. I don't have crushes. Gen: Not even on me? Ethan: Genevieve. Gen: Fine, fine.
Never Have I Ever:
1. Come into work hungover
Gen: No. Ethan: Absolutely not.
2. had a fistfight
Gen: Nope. Ethan: No. Gen: Yes. You punched Declan Nash. Ethan: *looks smug* Yes, I did, but that wasn't a fight. He never had the chance to hit me back. Gen: Okay, sure. Whatever you say.
3. been kicked out of a bar
Gen: Unfortunately. Ethan: What? You? Gen: Yeah, once in college. My sister, Natalie, came to visit... I may have jumped up onto a table to dance and it got us kicked out. Ethan: I'm surprised, Rookie. I didn't think you were the type. Gen: Have you? Ethan: Of course not.
4. gotten a tattoo
Ethan: No. Gen: Yes. Ethan: *looks over at her shook af* You... have a tattoo? Gen: Yeah, but it's hidden. Ethan: Where? Gen: I'm not telling. Ethan: Why, because 'a girl's gotta have some secrets.'? Gen: Precisely.
(it's on her rib cage, hidden by the band of her bra. He finds out after the first dirty 30 in ch 15)
5. broken someone’s heart
Gen: I don't think so. Ethan: *looks at Gen subtly* Yes.
6. been in love
Gen: I thought I was once, but no. Ethan: Never.
For Gen:
1. Where do you see him in five years (both professionally and in his personal life?)
Gen: Professionally, leading the team still, maybe writing another book. Personally... I don't know. As long as he's happy then whatever is in store for him in the next five years is good for me.
2. What do you find the most impressive about him?
Gen: His mind, for sure. That's what inspired me to become a doctor. He's so smart, it's incredible. The amount of things he knows, and he's always trying to learn new things. It's impressive. And attractive.
3. Last thing he texted you?
Gen: *laughs* He hates texting, he always gets so mad when I text him. But, the last thing he texted me was asking to meet him at Derry's for coffee, to talk about Naveen. And before that was when we were in Miami.
4. If he asked you out on a date, what would you say?
Gen: Yes. Without hesitation. I know my answer should be no, he's made it pretty clear that a romantic relationship would never happen between us, regardless of how we feel... but if he asked, I'd say yes.
For Ethan:
1. Where do you see her in five years (both professionally and in her personal life?)
Ethan: Professionally, being an incredible doctor, inspiring young minds like she claims I have. She'll be on the diagnostics team, for sure. Whether she wins the fellowship spot or not, she'll be there. Personally... still friends with her group, and hopefully, with someone who loves her. She deserves that, deserves to be with someone who can give her everything she wants in life.
2. What specifically do you find attractive about her?
Ethan: Her intelligence. Physically... her smile. She's beautiful when she smiles.
3. Last thing she texted you?
Ethan: A... meme, is that what they're called? Some ridiculous picture with words that was supposed to be funny. It wasn't.
4. If she asked you out on a date, how would you respond?
Ethan: She won't know what I've said, correct?... If Genevieve ever asked me out, as much as I say we can't be together, I know I'd say yes. It's unethical, and potentially damaging to her career, but... if I ever have the opportunity to be with her, like that, my answer would be yes.
BREE THESE WERE AMAZING! AMAZING. Please do this again, maybe after chapter 11 of book 2 next time. For the FEELS

Just finished watching season 2 of the Saved By The Bell reboot, and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! I hoped it would be good, but it exceeded my expectations in every way. It stays true to the heart of the original show while bringing something new and fresh to it. The tone and pacing remind me very much of another excellent high school comedy, Derry Girls, with it’s faced paced dialog and absurd humor, while still incorporating the original Saved By The Bell’s signature heartwarming life lessons in a way that’s more down to earth and realistic. Topics that would have been trotted out for a heavy-handed ‘very special episode’, or seen as too controversial for a sitcom in the 80s and 90s, are everyday facts of life that get talked about and dealt with by the new cast of teen characters in matter of fact and relatable ways, and with sharp, laugh out loud humor.
The new cast of kids are just as charming and lovable as the originals, and the inclusion of the original cast members is key to making it feel like a true continuation rather than a replacement. Even though the new show pokes gentle fun at the silliness of the original, it’s all done with affection by people who obviously know and love the show as much as we superfans do. The references to the original show add another layer of humor for the old school fans, but the show can still stand on it’s own merits for any newcomers to appreciate without needing to see the original.
The viewers who get the most out of the show are definitely those of us who grew up with the original though. Seeing the original characters again is like seeing old friends, and the updating and expanding of the world of Bayside feels like coming home and going to wonderland all at the same time. The continuation of the original gang’s journeys is a delight, particularly for series regulars Jessie and Slater. Their evolution as characters feels very real, and seeing Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez bring their characters to a new show with a different tone after all these years, without losing the essence of those characters, underscores how talented (and underrated) of actors they really are.
This new Saved By the Bell has the perfect mix of brains, humor and heart that can make you laugh out loud and get a little teary from feels in the very same episode. Personally, I’ve been going through the hardest few months of my life while watching this show, and it’s been the only thing that could make me smile or laugh some days. Saved By the Bell was a big part of my childhood, and it’s always made me happy to revisit a rerun or two when I needed a mood boost. Having this new show now is like being wrapped in my happy place when I needed it the most. I’m so glad it’s continuing to live on and bring it’s goodhearted spirit to a new generation. I hope they make more seasons, because I could use more Bayside in my life.

Can you do the asks that have a 4 in them?
Absolutely!
4. What was the last book you added to your tbr?
According to goodreads, it was “Guard Your Heart” by Sue Divin. It’s about a Protestant girl and a Catholic boy falling in love in Derry, Ireland. Found it on a ‘list of books to read if you love Derry Girls’ and while the boy isn’t English… it may have immediately made me think of Erin and James.
14. Name a book where the movie/tv adaptation was actually better than the original.
This is a rare phenomenon, but I’m gonna go with The Princess Diaries. It’s been a while since I read any of the books, and from what I remember, I didn’t dislike them, but the movies were just integral to my childhood. Pretty sure I watched them before I read the books anyway. I dunno if it’s solely because they made Queen Clarisse so much nicer, but the movies give me more of a modern fairy tale vibe than the books did. No hate to Meg Cabot, though! She’s a great writer!
24. Do you prefer to buy books online or in a bookshop?
I always prefer wandering through a bookstore, but if there’s a very specific book I want that I’m unlikely to find anywhere locally, I’ll definitely order online.
34. List five OTP’s.
I’m assuming that this is referring to book-based OTP’s, so here we go:
-Ron/Hermione (Harry Potter)
-Kaz/Inej (Six of Crows)
-Beatrice/Benedick (Much Ado About Nothing)
-Anne/Gilbert (Anne of Green Gables)
-Natasha/Pierre (War and Peace)
44. Do you like to listen to music when you read?
No, I find it too distracting. Maybe if I could find some good instrumental tracks that fit the tone, but honestly, I think I’d just get taken out of the moment.
Thanks for the ask, friend!

My ridiculous fandoms:
I know, multifandom much?!
I have a LOT, although I will post mostly AoS shit. (I don’t make things for all of these, don’t worry lmao, mostly I just spectate and sometimes reblog stuff.) Up to know I’ve put them all up in my bio, but I’ve decided only to do the top, say, three, otherwise it just gets wayyy too long. However, I’m putting it all here, so that anyone, if they feel so inclined, can see what shit I’m interested in.
I will also be putting a bunch of my favourite quotes from the shows there, because, well, I’m a total nerd xD.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
”With great responsibility comes...a ton of weird shit you are not prepared to deal with.”
“The steps you take don’t have to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction.”
“Sometimes, making a difference means being different.”
Star Trek: Discovery (sauce)
“You had me at unsanctioned mission...”
“Deal with me, universe, while I deal with her.”
And...(though this is not a real quote, exactly) Sauce Afirma Sauce Eterna. :)
Derry Girls
“If anyone is feeling anxious, worried or maybe you just want a chat, please, please do not come crying to me.”
“We got the gist. They ran out of spuds, everyone was raging.”
“Slainte, motherfuckers!”
Julie and the Phantoms
“Chill man, Street Dogs haven’t killed us yet.”
“I cried in a room for twenty-five years and didn’t get a single hug from either of you!”
“Oh. She said oh. That’s what you say if you get socks on your birthday, not when you’re invited to join the most epic band ever!”
Brigerton
“Having a nice face and pleasant hair is not an accomplishment. Do you know what is an accomplishment? Attending university! If I were a man, I could do that, you know.”
“You would actually have to be interesting for me to bother spying on you"
“All is fair in love and war but some battles leave no victor, only a trail of broken hearts that makes us wonder if the price we pay is ever worth the fight.”
Simon Snow series
“You were the sun, and I was crashing into you.”
“Sharing a room with the person you want most is like sharing a room with an open fire. He's constantly drawing you in. And you're constantly stepping too close. And you know it's not good--that there is no good--that there's absolutely nothing that can ever come of it. But you do it anyway. And then... Well. Then you burn.”
“I'd cross every line for him. I'm in love with him. And he likes this better than fighting.”
Avatar the Last Airbender
“Life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not.”
“My first girlfriend turned into the moon.” “That’s rough buddy.”
“Why am I so bad at being good?”
Harry Potter
“It’s leviOsa, not levioSA!”
“I solemnly swear I am up to no good.”
“Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect.”
The Queen’s Gambit
"I Would Say It Is Much Easier To Play Chess Without The Burden Of An Adam's Apple."
"I'm Not Your Guardian Angel. I'm Not Here To Save You. Hell, I Can Barely Save Me."
“Again?”
Once Upon A Time
"That's How You Know You've Really Got A Home. 'Cause When You Leave It ...There's This Feeling You Can't Shake. You Just Miss It."
"Sometimes The Best Teacup Is Chipped."
"All Magic Comes With A Price."
The Good Place
“I’m just not a ‘new experience’ kind of guy. My comfort zone is basically like, that chair, and honestly? The arms are a little sharp.”
“What matters isn’t if people are good or bad. What matters is, if they’re trying to be better today than they were yesterday. You asked me where my hope comes from? That’s my answer.”
“We do nothing. We hope that our early successes make up for the embarrassing mess we’ve become. Like Facebook. Or America.”
Community
"We'll definitely be back next year. If not, it'll be because an asteroid has destroyed all human civilization. And that's canon."
"GAAYYY MARRIAAGEE!!"
“Our Captain was killed on duty tonight. Leaves behind two kids and a pregnant wife. So you’re missing a Batman DVD?”
Zoey’s Extraoridnary Playlist
“Who wants some freshly delivered, slightly cold, mediocre pizza?”
“Songs are all just an expression of our deepest wants and desires… Joy, pain, heartbreak, yearning, forgiveness, revenge. Good music can make you feel things you can’t express in words.”
“I just found out a guy I like is engaged, and I am either going totally nuts, or I suddenly can hear people’s innermost thoughts as big musical numbers.”
The Old Gaurd
“Depends on the century.”
“You're an incurable romantic...”
“SHIIIIIIIIITTTTTT!”
Merlin (BBC)
“Merlin should take some of the credit, turns out he’s not always entirely stupid.”
“Are you saying I’m fat?” -Arthur | “No, I’m saying the belt is one hole shy away from perfection.”
Artemis Fowl
“I am the future queen of this world, at the very least. You may refer to me as Mistress Koboi for the next five minutes. After that you may refer to me as Aaaaarrrrgh, hold your throat, die screaming, and so on.”
“We lost the crickets,” she said. “Even you can’t make that sound tough.”
“I never tell anyone exactly how clever I am. They would be too scared.”
How To Train Your Dragon
“ Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile!”
“You just gestured to all of me.”
“Toothless, what are you doing? We need her to LIKE us!”
The Dragon Prince
“I’m just a kid. I haven’t fought in any battles. I haven’t read many books of wisdom. I haven’t gone through the things that made my father the king he was. So I’ve decided that I don’t have to be the king my father was. My father made choices to keep fighting battles that started hundreds of years before he was born. To punish enemies for crimes their parents committed! I don’t want to be that kind of king.”
“The dragon prince is alive! And he’s really cute, by the way.”
“What? WHAAAAAAAT!”
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
“Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?”
“A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”
“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”
“The Answer to the Great Question... Of Life, the Universe and Everything... Is... Forty-two,' said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.”
“Ford... you're turning into a penguin. Stop it.”
sorry for the five I couldn’t choose only 3
But there you have it, my insane, ridiculous, way-too-many fandoms. For anyone who cares. ;)

Book Seventy-Nine: If It Bleeds
“There’s an underlying truth in it which I believe you will grasp even at your current age Films are ephemeral, while books- the good ones- are eternal, or close to it. You have read me many good ones, but others are waiting to be written.”
Tumblr media
This is it... the second to last book in the challenge. I’m really dragging my feet reading Later (although it is a spectacular book). But this challenge is over, and I don’t know what I’m going to do. I have a ton of books on my shelves and Kindle to read, and writing that needs to be done (characters are all but screaming for me to come back to them); but this project really gave me purpose in a rudderless time.
I had started this project as a fun conversation piece, but quickly turned into something bigger. During quarantine, this challenge gave me a purpose. I’d challenge myself to read one hundred pages a day, and remind myself to drink water between chapters. Sometimes writing these posts dragged me out of bed. In winter months I’m extremely agoraphobic, and it’s tough for me to leave the house some days. And other days it’s all I can do to wash and brush my hair. Mental health is a bitch, sometimes. But I didn’t mean to make this about me... although I’m sure some of my readers can relate, a lot of us took a hit to the mental health during 2020. While I will look back on quarantine fondly (it gave me excuses not to leave the house, or change out of my pajamas), my mental health will not. But just as it’s time to leave the house, I suppose it’s also time to start focusing on new projects once this one is complete. I have no idea what that will look like. Maybe I’ll start with Steve’s movies. Maybe I’ll re-read Joe Hill. Who knows. But I do know I’m going to indulge in some trashy fiction reading.
Ok!
If It Bleeds is a collection of three novellas, and a Holly Gibney story. I shouldn’t discount the other three stories: they’re extremely well written, and thought provoking. But the real star of the book is the Holly story.
The first story, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone turns grief on it’s ear. A lot of people call their loved one’s cellphones after they pass... they want that experience of hearing their voice just one more time. But what happens when the phone is buried with your loved one and continues to ring? And what if you get a text from them after their death? It’s a sweet story, with your typical Steve twist.
The second story, The Life of Chuck is told backwards, and “contains multitudes”. It also has a post-apocalyptic vibes, with California falling into the ocean, and the Midwest burning. It also has college kids storming the White House looking for answers, which is just another example of Steve predicting the future.
Steve was inspired by a random billboard that read, “Thanks Chuck!” along with a guys picture and “39 Great Years”. Again, something mundane with a great Steve twist. He’s proven this is his sweet spot.
The third story is If It Bleeds, which picks up almost immediately where The Outsider left off. There’s a tragic bombing that takes place inside an elementary school, and Holly can’t stop watching the television news reports. There’s something tickling at her brain, and she can’t figure out what it is.
Tumblr media
Eventually we find out there are more monsters like the one Holly killed in The Outsider. Jerome makes the best comparison, and says evil is like a bird that randomly flies from person to person, infecting them as it goes. There’s one section of the book when a character refers to the monster as, “It”. So it makes you wonder if this is one big tie-in, where we find out Holly is killing pieces of the monster that plagued Derry for so long.
Tumblr media
The mystery itself is secondary to Holly’s larger-than-life character. She is dealing with family issues; her Trump-supporting mom needs Holly’s help putting her uncle in a care facility, and Holly is struggling to cut herself out of the co-dependent relationship she has with her mother. But Holly has grown. She knows her worth, and she doesn’t let people talk down to her anymore. Her evolution is best described as, “Holly would do well to remember...who she is. Not the child who nibbled Mr. Rabbit Trick’s ears. Not the adolescent who threw up her breakfast most days before school. She  is the woman who, along with Bill and Jerome, saved those children at the Midwest Culture and Arts Complex. She is the woman who survived Brady Hartsfield. The one who faced another monster in a Texas cave. The girl who hid in this room and never wanted to come out is gone.”
The final story is Rat. And I’m just going to tell you... an actual rat quoting Jonathan Franzen is perfect. He’s problematic enough to be an actual rodent. Yeah, I’m going to say it. The Corrections was absolute garbage, and I don’t know why it was lauded the way it was. He’s a condescending misogynist and he’s not nearly as good a writer as he thinks he is... says the girl writing a blog on her Stephen King musings. But whatever! I own what I’m doing, and the significance of it.
Tumblr media
I will gladly re-read all of Steve’s books again before picking up another Jonathan Franzen book. If you want to dive into all the reasons he’s disgusting, this Bustle article will explain it to you. Like, legit explain it. Not mansplain it.
Anyway, Rat explores why it’s not a great idea to make deals with rodents during major weather events. And when you’re at your isolated cabin and a major snowstorm is on the way- heed your wife’s advice and come back to civilization.
This collection included plenty of Constant Reader mentions:
Derry
Shawshank Prison
Castle Rock
Gunslinger
It was an excellent collection, and I can’t get enough Holly. Steve talked about how she started out as a small, minor character and her presence just grew and grew. I don’t know about the rest of the Constant Readers, but I’d totally read another Holly book. Hell, I’ll take a whole series at this point.
So, my final book is Later. I’ve got about 100 pages left to read and then that’s it... until April.

A Dark and Starless Forest character descriptions
for fanart reference! find my full database at my pinned post.
Derry
her flower is a poppy.
Tiny gray flowers bloom on my shoulder and descend across the thick fat of my upper arm. It doesn't hurt. It's a gentle push under my skin, a tug from somewhere above it
fat, long brown hair, plain black glasses,  jeans, tshirt, purple sneakers
tiny green flowers sprouted along my left ear /  tiny blue flowers fall from my hair to the floor
"Through Violet, I learned to love the way a tank top showed off my upper arms or revealed the full shape of my stomach."
ties hair up in a ponytail
paints her nails red
Frank
a tall white man in his 30s or 40s. lean, green eyes, wears reflective sunglasses outside
Jane
pink camellia
Jane is the oldest of us at nineteen. She's a slender Black girl who spent the first ten years of her life on a farm in Ohio. She wound up here, like the rest of us did after her, when her magic became too much for her parents to handle.
Winnie
amaryllis
She's anxiously braided a small portion of her long blonde hair while waiting her turn. The braid falls apart when she drops her hands and steps up.
Winnie arrived at the lake house a few months afterJane. I don't think she changed much from that point to when I met her two years later, or even to now. She's still a chubby white girl with pigtails, a temper, and a Minnesota accent.
has a pet poltergeist??
derry grows a spiny black flower for her
Brooke
The third-oldest, Brooke, is a Deaf Mexican American. Her flower is a cluster of blue forget-me-nots that outshine anything else on the shelf.
left side of face has a constellation of freckles and moles travelling from cheek to shoulder
fat
fire & air magic
Elle & Irene
Elle and Irene are twins, but not identical twins- they're both tall white girls, but there are a million little differences, like Elle's honey-blond hair versus Irene's dark blond, or Elle's face, with its thick smattering of freckles, versus Irene's face, which tends to go red more than it freckles or even tans.
blue eyes
Irene is trans
Elle's flower is a vivid pink snapdragon, and Irene's a coral-red hibiscus with deceptively delicate petals.
under glamour: Elle's freckles now glow like little stars. Her blond hair is shot through with silver, not like natural gray hair, bur like tinsel from a Christmas tree. Her eyes have gone blacker than black, blacker than coal. She pulls aside the collar of her shirt and we see the little pearls studding her collarbone.
Elle's favourite flower is crocuses, purple and white and yellow
Violet
Next is Violet. They're a couple years younger than me, but already taller. I'm not that short or anything. Violet just sprouted up over the last couple years. They're five-foot-ten, with shaggy brown hair and huge gray eyes behind plain black glasses, the same kind I wear. They're Mexican American, like Brooke, though their skin is a little lighter than her deep brown.
glamour their hair from brown to purple to silver
blue tined hair, green eyes
Like every week, Violet's patterned an item of their clothing -today a T-shirt- to have a sunflower pattern. It matches their glass flower. A good luck charm.
yellow magic
they experiment with glamouring clothes, favouring anything with huge sleeves they can flap like wings. sometimes dust glitter on their face like freckles.
Olivia & London
Unlike the big twins, London and Olivia are identical. They're two little Black girls with the same inquisitive brown eyes, same broad noses, same round chipmunk cheeks. They're the youngest in the house by six years. They're the babies of the house, and we all dote on them, but being young doesn't get them out of our weekly tests. London's apple blossom is a pale pink, but it still glows brighter than most. Olivia's sweet pea is a vibrant, flickering fuchsia. London's flash is always small, where Olivia's tends to be brighter, because London isn't as fierce about practicing her magic.
-one of Olivia's many makeshift terrariums more fully under her bed. What Olivia really wants is a cat, but that's not going to happen, so last year she began her collection of moths and spiders. Her prized pet is a shiny black beetle named Gabriel. She found him on her recent birthday, and took it as a sign that he was her familiar. Gabriel gets his own elaborate terrarium, and Olivia likes to hold and play with him,
Claire
pale and dark haired with huge dark eyes. her grey dress has buttons from the high white collar all the way to the half length hem
unreadable expression
crooked smile and too many teeth
ability to manifest physical objects, flower was also a poppy

Tagged by @oilan. Thank you for tagging me!!! I always want to be tagged;;
Five songs I've been listening to on repeat lately:
1. “Delphine” by Kadhja Bonet. Gorgeous, hypnotizing song by a small/underrated artist which references Germaine de Staël’s novel from the perspective of the husband.
2. “Celebrate” (Acoustic Version) by MIKA. Just puts me in a mood & makes me think about an original character I am fond of... MIKA songs in general do this.
3. “Soft Universe” by Aurora. This gives me the OTP feels. (chefs kiss emoji) “And from the dark, into the light / I saw a stone burst into life / And in the corner of your eye / I saw a dream that never died. / Speak to me, speak to me / With love in your words / Make for me, make for me / A soft universe”
4. “Origin of Love” by MIKA. Like I said with the MIKA songs before, but this one in particular is Important.
5. “Let’s Sort the Whole Thing Out” by Carly Rae Jepsen. My favorite from Dedicated Side B!
Last movie watched:
Downton Abbey (2019) with @marschallin and @combeferre to complete my first-time watch through of the series.
Currently watching:
Derry Girls (second time for me) with my grandmother. She thinks it’s funny and “the only thing bad about it is the language.” Also I am not watching them per se but Hogan’s Heroes, Gunsmoke and the Lone Ranger are always on in the background.
Currently reading:
Ceci and I have been trying to read “Never Anyone But You” by Rubert Thomson but we are not doing a very good job of reading and then discussing chapters within a similar time as each other so we might end up just reading them separately.
I think everyone on my dash has already been tagged or has done this recently!

Nothing Lasts Forever.
Tumblr media
Summary. The town of Derry changes people. Sends them running away. What it draws in is arguably worse. Humans create the hate and evil monsters come to feed off of. Eleanor Baker knew that well at a young age when she stumbled upon a painted figure in the distance. Pennywise never forgot the girl without fear. It’s possible that they haunted each other.
AN: I take no responsibility for this. Me flexing some horror and hopelessness bc I have nothing left to lose here. Wrote this to work through some things and sorta in love with it. TW: Should be obvious. Trauma. CSA mention. Abuse. S*xual references. G*re. S*icidal thoughts.  Death. Pennywise F*cks and it’s canon. Sorry, Mr. King.
Pennywise x OC Eleanor Baker ~ Also on my ao3
They say she saw It first.
They say she smelled the circus. Sugary sweet and the rusting of metal.
They say she heard the bells toll soft. Once. Twice for her.
They say she felt no fear.
A branch cracked under pristine shoes, distracting a clown in the midst of hunt. The prey; small and blue eyed, barely five years old, ran into safe arms where their family set up camp for a weekend by the lake.
Body twisting around, It saw her last. Six years old. Curious green eyes shimmered even under grey skies. Pigtails. Feet behind her, father was hunched over to change a tire with mother beckoning from the window. Pulled over to the side of the road near a Derry forest. The Baker family. Well known and beloved because they had money.
“Eleanor. You’ll ruin your new shoes. We can’t be late for your recital. It’s going to rain!” Mother’s voice went under heard. Leaves rustled while the clown made a path to slink toward her. Her lips parted, eyes fixated and unblinking. Yellow eyes faded to baby blue like the pretty jewels her mother wore. Safe.
They were face to face. Drool dripped to hit her once untouched shoes. Those bejeweled eyes surged from that delicate blue back to a hungry orange, glowing brighter and yet he smelled nothing.
She had no scent. No fear. A deep, wide nothing. Vast as the ocean could reach. There was no advancing, no will to bring forth the deadlights. She’d probably think they were pretty stars watching over her. Cinderella wishing for a fairy godmother and a prince to whisk her away. He could only watch her make an utter fool of him. Somehow that charmed.
“Eleanor, now!” Came the shout from her father. A drop of red emerged from the trees. Shiny and terrible. “Where did you get that?”
A red balloon skimmed against the breeze.
“From the clown.” She said, getting into the car. “He gave it to me.”
“Enough playing around, Nell.” Father pressed her inside. The grip was lost along the tangled string. That spot of blood floated up toward the endless sky. Became a floating star too. She wished to float with it.
Eleanor danced her little heart out. Prima Ballerina in the making. Perfection was not everything, it was the only thing. She gazed into the audience beyond the balmy stage lights. Rows and rows of orange eyes. Glowing into her. No fear to be cast. Not for any of them. This world didn’t deserve it.
She saw It again that same week. When they attended a big family reunion. Picnic and all. And her uncle pulled her into the closet full of coats and old board games that were gathering dust. He called this a game too. A secret game.
After he’d decided the game was over, a pang snatched his heart to squeeze. Gushing. Eleanor saw those glowing eyes from the shadows. Thought for a moment it was the old cat who roamed the grounds.
Her uncle asked for help with no breaths left. Tore her frilly dress clutching at her. Hit the hardwood with a finishing crack. Blood pooled.
Nell didn’t want it to stain her shoes or Mother would be upset.
That white face bent down toward her. Spine curving to push out against skin. Utterly inhuman.
“Can you smell the circus, Nelly?” Painted lips full of clustering teeth rumbled. She blinked. White cheeks threatened to tear open with the grin curling.
   “Yes.”
Little, pretty bells chimed in the ruffles of his garment as he laughed. Soft and sweeter than any sound in this world.
   "Who are you?"
"Pennywise. The dancing clown." He caught her looking at the body behind his feet.
   Big eyes full and empty.
“Oh, don’t worry about him, he won’t float.” The clown paused. “You’re a little wonder, aren’t you?”
   She said nothing to that.
“Go on, grow and see if the world devours you. Tumble back to the weeds where I'll find you again.” His own curiosity was a growing sickness. This fragile human. Unbreakable.
The thing about Pennywise was he never considered himself the villain. He only came to feed when that evil and hatred humans brought this world was potent. Natural order. Clockwork. Wolves feed on sheep. The worlds spun on.
Predators tore into prey, he wouldn’t apologize for that. He didn’t create the hatred, just fed from it. Didn't stop it either. Little dash of fear did a body good. Gave it a sweeter taste.
Fear was painfully human. A trait that tore us open to display the soft underbelly because it betrayed us down to the core. Granted us something to overcome. A test of endurance. Truly let our true colors pour fresh and obscene. Beautiful. Even when it overcame.
Pennywise gave her head a pat, leaned down to whisper into her ear.
“I see into your blackest heart of hearts, Nelly, deep down you’ll know. You'll always know.”
The door opened. Tiny footsteps away from the dark and the figure there always watching her. Like the stars above in a black sky.
   “You’ll know.”
Eleanor walked downstairs. Out into the sunny day full of festivities and family. Asked her aunt for another piece of cake. Frosted with yellow buttercream flowers. They discovered her uncle in that closet at the same time the flies found him too.
They found the cloth clutched into his meaty, stiff hand and began to ask questions. She didn’t want to talk about the secret games he played when she was in that house. They sent a bolt of thunder rattling into her brain. Unraveled the synapses.
Her mother burned the cloth. Vowed to never speak of it in hopes she would forget. Children forgot things all the time.
Nell never forgot. Not for a moment. Not her uncle or her festering relatives who seemed to easily put her in the back of their memories.
She wanted them to always remember too. If anything, they owed her that much.
The pictures her mind fleshed out with crayons were not what children should be drawing. Twisted bodies sometimes. Other days, it was those eyes. Molten lava. Mother and father decided this wasn’t something they could deal with. Seeing her looking so still and motionless around the house like a ghost was too much. Knowing they failed their daughter was just too much. A lock clicked.
They put her in a place that watched over mistakes of all ages from rich families. Paid it well. They told Eleanor it wasn’t her fault and yet, she was the one locked away in a tower for it. She was the one ignored and doped up.
Ten years and she gave them nothing. Years of homeschooling. Counseling. Medications. Years of sticking her tongue out to swear she’d swallowed her pills. Years of giving them nothing. No laughter or tears. She never hurt a fly and she was the monster.
Sometimes, it was easier to become the monster they wanted, she supposed.
Eleanor got out and married the first man who smiled at her. Called her pretty. Just to be away from mother and father. They’d rot in the weeds soon enough. The rest of her family dwindled. Terrible accidents. She vowed to never reproduce to spite them.
Husband played games too when dinner wasn’t just right or when she dressed just a little against his wishes. Seven miscarriages. Too many broken promises. A car accident pulled his body apart. Left her with some money to return home.
Mother and father needed her now, sick and dying in their lavish beds. Life always went on in Derry. Father went still snug in his tomb a month later. Few more weeks and mother’s harsh insults became apologies.
This girl she ignored was all she had left.
“Nell, I hope you can forgive us.” Her mother croaked one day.
“You’re free to do that, mama.” She’d turned and came to sit on the bed.
   “Do what, my dear?”
“Hope.” Eleanor tucked some brittle hair from mother’s face. Made room for the pillow she pushed into place. Eight minutes and it was over. Twenty seven years and members of her family dropped like flies. She told herself it was a curse. Or fate.
Bloodlines dying had never been so beautiful. Not built to last forever. Not at all. There was justice in that much.
Both Eleanor’s parents became ashes in two ornate urns. She drove them out to the Barrens and poured them into the festering waters. Stinking of Derry’s rotten bowels. Wind swept. Picking up green and brown leaves. Wading the waters to give them some appearance of peace.
Nell didn’t smell the stink of death. She smelt the circus. Hot buttery popcorn and cotton candy. Twang of metal from the old, rusted rides whirling all directions. A child’s laughter echoed out from the giant pipe ahead. Covered in sludge and moss.
She followed the lively sounds. Enticed. No long holding to this world. Another one awaited. It always had. Marked with two glowing orange eyes.
Reminded her of the lights twinkling every Halloween. Jack-o-lanterns you couldn’t blow out before midnight because it was against the rules and would bring you bad luck.
Through watery rot and dead leaves, Nell went into the pipes. Caught glimmers of light between cracks. Felt her way. Heard the uttering of the seven children she lost beckoning her home.
   Down.
   Down.
   Down.
Ruined her clothes in the trance. Clawing for more because the world couldn’t hope to deliver. Into a massive nest with a skylight. Candlelight danced. She heard the trill of a music box until the room came alive. Whirled from rust and rot to marble and gold.
Prettier than her wedding day. A church with decorated pews of red taffeta. White roses hanging from every corner. Petals crying into the cherry wood floors.
A man smiled at her who wasn’t Husband. Sharp, brooding face. Swept brown locks slicked like Clark Gable. Pink lips curled and crystalline eyes gave a twinkle. A white suit and one red rose at his breast.
She came to him when he reached. Body heavier because a dress dragged behind her. Full skirt of those same delicate white roses. Tight bodice that twinkled under candlelight. Nell smiled too. Utterly lost and found all at once in this room that smelled like decadent caramel apples.
A gloved hand curled into hers.
   “Am I dead?” She asked.
“Oh, yes. For twenty seven years now. You wandered the Earth. But, you're home now.” That voice. All shivers. Chilling until the candles started to snuff out. “That was not life, Nelly. You existed by a thread.”
“Nelly.” She mused in her deepest dream of dreams. The hate and the neglect and the sheer evil brought by humans who were supposed love and protect instead tore her soul far asunder.
The man leaned in near her hair. Inhaled.
“Nothing. Even still.” He recounted the memories. All those times he tried and failed to devour her. “Little wonder.”
   "Pennywise." She puffed, barely audible.
“I watched you dance. All those years. You can dance down here too in the dark."
Nell realized as he brought her out for a romantic spin. She’d been seeking him out all her life. All the decay and twisting vines in her soul. Begging to just cross over and stop this pain. But, he wouldn’t finish it because she had no fear. So she danced until the room began to peel. He wiped his cheek on one sleeve. Peachy makeup smeared the fabric to display that red smile upon white skin.
She pushed off him. Watched blood rain and melt the rest of it away. This place. A nest. A stomach. A pile of trash and metal twisted up toward the sky. Gouging. Figures floating around it. Waiting. Sleeping soundly because evil couldn’t touch them anymore. At the very least. They fueled something brand new.
No cry. No scream. Nell succumbed. Stumbling back into a worn mattress as the clown crawled up toward her at some inhuman speed. Slapped his hands on either side of her head. They just breathed.
   Existed together in one space.
Sometimes good and bravery didn’t blossom from overcoming fear. Sometimes you still wanted to die because enduring a lifelong ache was not growth. It just hurt. There was power in it, but it fucking ached.
It burned. Plenty of things in her life burned. The scorn of her parents. Her uncle's games. The rotten nurses tossing her around. Husband's hands indenting skin.
But, Pennywise didn’t. He just showed up to watch the fires grow hot and breathless into a black sky. The terrible view was still a breathtaking thing. Something shattering to become a supernova. Rebirth.
Enduring pain was worth it. That sick curiosity that there was something more to life. It was worth it. So, fight. Endure. Ache. Be human while you have the chance in an inhuman world because it needs you.
Gloves opened her dress. Tore layers of tulle and chiffon. Slashed silk. Hands pressed against his chest. Not pushing or pulling. Just holding. Shifting over thick, stitched cotton. Ruffles swayed. She felt a heart beat so hard there under her palm.
He was alive. Something brand new. Not of this world.
“Am I like you?” She begged finally. Years of searching and asking why. He stopped to see her green eyes. Glowered. One blue, one orange.
“Not yet.” Was the truest answer he could form. Fingers gripped his fabric sleeves. Twisted just to hold onto something tangible for the first time in all her existence. Alive at last in this place. Water droplets echoed distantly. “You cannot last forever. Nothing lasts forever.”
Except love, she thought. Except desire.
Pennywise seemed to hear it even still. Felt the truth of it carve out his heart that was still beating powerfully. Profoundly.
Something flayed her open. Pushed inside. Made her moan deliciously until two gloved fingers touched her mouth. Bodies connecting. Moving together.
There were hands everywhere. Stroking soft caresses up and down her naked flesh. It felt like a million little pieces of candlelight were swirling up her body. Those same orbs that had been following her around for too many years shined behind his eyes. Resonated. Beautiful.
She made out parts of him between thumps. Orange hair. Pristine paint. His mouth on her skin. A heart that was pumping vigorously. Low rumbling growls. Nell felt she’d been starved all her life and was finally feeding. Finally letting the ache flood out that she’d held onto for too long. Finally alive. Feeling. Deep down and drawing in it.
Her voice came to beg for more of him. Hands grasping to touch him back. To delve into this earth and just feel. He touched her everywhere. Lips and neck. Down her breasts. Between spread legs.
The combined sensations made her cry out for him to never stop. A gloved hand on her jaw brought their eyes together. Hot, wet touch. Boiling. The peak shattered them both. Nell fell to shuddering pieces. Curved up. Moaning and shameless. Weight fell into her body so lips could touch her own. Once. Just once while they were warm.
Pennywise lifted off fully to see her eyes. Inhaled again and got what he’d sought too. Years and it was finally there.
Those green eyes glimmered at him. A waft of sweet candied apples bubbled with heat. Fear. Clear as a crystal, dewy morning. It was the most beautiful thing in the world.
There was finally something found that could be lost. Something she sought out and held and hoped for.
And the fear of losing it was almost too much to bear.
One gloved finger caught a tear that trickled out from the corner of her eyes.
“Please.” She said, unable to find much else. Like she wanted him and nothing else for the rest of these long days. Do it. Just do it. Nell’s hand lifted. Gentle fingers drew lines along his face. "Pennywise. Please."
   It was a soft prayer.
He lunged down. Sunk teeth into her tender neck. Tore the scream out before she could hope to give it. Nell choked there. Made an odd sound like she was laughing. It bubbled. Claws grew out from those gloves. Shoved forth into her raging heart.
   A squelch.
Her lips were still upturned when it was done. Green eyes pointed on him. Peaceful and bloodied. Naked under the moonlight. Dripping rubies.
He tossed his head back and wailed. Teeth sharp and bared. Bloodied. Lost. A shattering sound that bent time and space apart. Pennywise plucked her up. Climbed high and vast to the very top of the twisting pile. Watched the dead children float like little falling stars. Something to make wishes upon. Peaceful for only a second in this life.
He placed her there in a sheer drape. Closed her eyes. Let the deadlights swelter above them. Spinning all directions.
   A scar thickened.
Three days passed. The deadlights danced high and wide. Fluttering like a swarm of butterflies. The world spun on a new axis. Pennywise sat below upon his stage. Curved over in wait. Marble statue.
A low rumble like a purr erupted. Dainty feet came to him with a newfound grace. Little dancer. Deadly ballerina all porcelain and blushed. Blood red shoes made soft taps across the stage.
A white hand touched his shoulder. His little wonder. Bells tolled distantly three times.
“Can you smell the circus?” Her voice poured white hot. Purring louder so he'd feel it vibrate his own chest.
Lips curled wide. Split. Pennywise rose to see her in the light. Perfection. Those green eyes shimmering like emeralds. Haunted. Totally alive and willing.
“Yes.” He hissed. Cupping her face to see the angles. Not ruining the permanent brushstrokes that came with her rebirth. “Yes, I do.” A bond struck.
   I do. I promise. We'll float. Always.
Nell smiled to match him. Totally and irrevocably his equal. A pulse of light drew them together. She granted him a single kiss, tasting candied. A new horror in this world hungry for the evil it would always bring.
“We were built to last forever.”
